The first episode of Shogun has me walking away with one take:
#shogun#I can’t believe they fucking killed the baby too#for context: shogun is set in the 1600s#the meiji era - the 1800s was when japan decided the samurai were awesome#and decided EVERYONE should live like them#as in emulate their fucked as shit honour culture#while in the 1600s the commoners saw that shit and went HEEL NAW#commoners had it pretty easy as long as you didn’t go out past curfew#Ask Showa said most of Japan’s societal issues#can be traced back to the meiji era#and nowhere do I see this exemplified better than in Shogun
