My advisor for my Master’s Program in Second Language Acquisition is a Sociolinguist specializing in World Englishes.
I really want to do my degree paper on enregisterment, and she’s the only sociolinguist in the department so it would have to be with her.
She refuses to learn about enregisterment.
She suggested I start exploring translanguaging instead.
She likes Canagarajah’s work on translanguaging.
One of his more recent articles:
The self control I’ve been exerting to not just send her this article is fucking excruciating.
#unfortunately also Canagarajah’s understanding of what entegisterment is very different than mine?#like he keeps talking about enregistering specific terms like literally just the meaning of the word ‘translanguaging’#which. a single word does not a register make. even in the linguistic anthropology sense of the word.#single terms can be hallmarks of a register and thus become markers for a register#but the WORD isn’t enregistered because enregisterment is literally ‘the process of creating and defining a register’#but then again the last time I worked with the theory was in undergrad when literally only Johnstone was working on it#so maybe the meaning has changed as it’s been taken up by different fields of linguistics#which would be hilariously ironic given the entire argument in the above article
