my unsolicited thoughts on lewis in that "20 years" conversation. i thought he was just pointing out how, in the end, his time in the sport is finite and unlike toto (and merc in general), he doesn't have the kind of space carved out for him with multiple layers of protection. he isn't a corporation unlike merc and toto as part-team owner, both of whom have all the time in the sport as long as they want to be in it. lewis has no such privilege. lewis has no such position. yes he is a big name, a phenomenal athlete with a wealth of expertise, talent, time, personal resources, and of course, championships that speak for themselves.

but even if he wants to stay longer, even if he wants it more than most, he can't do such a thing. he knows that eventually he won't be allowed to by that corp and knew that to be true, so much so that he said that to toto in front of other people.

which is why as much as it looks like "hehe he pulled one on torger 🤭" in that clip, it makes me believe more that it's a sign/symptom that by the time the ink on that 2024 contract has dried, he's already known how merc will operate as a corporation and leave him out to dry by 2025.
