     reggie      had      never      been      good      at      swimming.                     the    water    actually      terrified      her,    if    she    was    being    honest           -           a    threat    of    things    unknown    lurking    under    its    surface.    and    it    wasn’t    as    if    anyone    had    ever      offered      to    teach    her,    either.    no,    she    was    on    her    own,    and    the    only    thing    spurring    her    into    the    water    was    the      looks      from    the    other    girls    on    the    sides,    the    snickering    that    made    its    way    to    reggie’s    ears    turning    her      face      as    red    as    her      hair.

     her      feet      are      on      the      first      step,                     and    she’s    trying    to    psych    herself    up    when    one    of    the    girls    steps    behind    her.    the    shove    happens      so      fast,      reggie    doesn’t    even    realize    she’s      falling      until    the    water    hits    her,    stinging    up    and    down    her    arms    and    legs.    her    head    is    under,    and    frantically    reggie    realizes    she    doesn’t    know      how      to      get      up.      it’s    still    the    shallow    end,    but    reggie    could    have    been    in    the    middle    of    the      ocean      for    how    safe    she    felt.    briefly,    she    considered    the    fact    that      she      might      die      here.

     that      is,                     until    there’s    an    arm    around    her    middle    and    she’s    being    yanked    to    the    surface.    air    replaces    the    liquid    in    her    lungs    and    she’s      coughing,      sputtering      frantically,    grasping    for    anything    that    will    keep    her    afloat.    she’s    brought    to    the    side,    nails    finding    concrete,    and    it’s    the    first    time    she’s    able    to      see      her    surroundings.    the    girls    who    pushed    her    in    are    laughing,    cackling    from    their    place    to    the    side,    and    the    person    who    saved    reggie,    who    reggie    didn’t    even      know,      was    right    beside    her,      drenched      as    well.           ❛           th-thanks.           ❜           she    shaking,    and    it’s      not      from    the    hold.
