[Bucer] told Grynaeus plainly, that [Henry VIII] yielded too much to his weak and faulty conscience; that Catharine's good reputation was of more value than the peace of the king's conscience, which could easily be restored if put into the hands of the physician Christ; and that Henry should trust in God, read the Scriptures, and pray over the matter until he was freed from his error. So deeply was he concerned over the danger of a revolution in England, even approving the solution of a divorce with the consent of the queen, if such catastrophe might be avoided, that Grynaeus accused him of exaggerating the importance of this consideration.

#this is interesting bcus it's a debate btwn grynaeus (who believes in the merit of henry's case of divorce)#and bucer who does not...#and yet the latter still concedes that the succession crisis is real and that basically catherine should relent and accept divorce for#the better of england#which is actually interestingly sort of a consensus btwn many catholics (as high as the pope) and reformers of this time#even those who sympathize with her and believe henry's theological case is weak#tl ; dr the haha even reformers thought henry didn't have a case~ isn't really the whole picture#the great matter files
