Just remembered that at some point Rakitin calls the whole Karamazov family a bunch of conservatives and now I can't help but imagine him and Ivan having an insane argument Twitter leftist infighting style

#I'm saying infighting because even if I don't really know how to define Ivan's politics in detail #he does represent the westernized intellectual and some of his progressive ideas are mentioned in the book #like the whole Church-State separation thing and his opinions on Russia and Russians #and he's presented in opposition to Dmitri and Alyosha who are more aligned with Russian ideals so #he's definitely not as conservative as the rest of the Karamazovs #he's not as anti-Russia as Pavel either but still #and my personal interpretation of him calling Rakitin a liberal is him criticizing Rakitin for being a fake socialist #or not as much of a socialist as he claims to be anyway #which is a leftist infighting classic tbh #but that's just how I see it #this said I don't really think Ivan is a socialist but imo we don't see enough of his politics to give them a detailed definition #the brothers karamazov #ivan karamazov #mikhail rakitin #mine
