It’s possible that Jeeves is just saying this to mollify Bertie - hiding behind furniture to avoid being seen isn’t exactly something you’d have to be a genius to come up with - but what always jumps out to me about this passage is how sad it is that Bertie is so used to being yelled at and insulted by his “friends” and relatives that when someone actually compliments him it distracts him from whatever else was going on

(On the other hand, it’s also possible Jeeves was being sincere - it IS true that he had every reason to believe Bertie would come up with something to avoid being seen, he’s even seen him do the hide-behind-furniture thing before (Thank You, Jeeves). Maybe this is the Jeeves equivalent of Bertie breathlessly telling anyone who will listen about how brilliant and courageous Jeeves was for throwing a raincoat over a swan’s head)
