I never watched G*od Om*ns, so it was fandom again with the "they're gay"???
At least Star Trek did this right, you know, not lying to please someone. Spock and Kirk was never a thing and also was never meant to be a thing. But the creator himself said, if you wanna see them like that, it's fine. Do what you want. But in canon it's not that way.
But really, somehow fandom seems to make it easy for creators to just bait, but never commit and they're happy, wtf.
And IF they get actual lgbt rep, they're upset because it's not the character they WANTED to be lgbt....
Actually, the fandom is largely against them being gay because they claim it’s “nonbinary and asexual representation”.
Which bothers me just because they’re basically applauding homophobic tropes simply because they benefit from homophobic tropes.
I want to make it clear that my problem isn’t “why aren’t you making the characters canonically gay?!!?!!? This is homophobic!!!11!1!1”. I’m fine with the relationship remaining a close friendship canonically. And canonically speaking, I think I might prefer that tbh.
My problem is with how the original homophobia in the book sort of goes ignored, and how the writer teases and hints and in this case I would actually say baits… and then receives praise from the fandom for doing what everyone else does when it comes to gay pairings.
Basic overview of the situation from my POV:
Book establishes a character as a gay stereotype
Immediately goes “but he isn’t gay because angels are sexless unless they make an effort” (IMO the sexless thing could’ve been established in many other ways. Did it really have to be done in a “don’t worry he’s not gay” way?)
Book proceeds to make the gay stereotype thing a running joke, with the character being called various homophobic slurs (but see, it’s funny because it’s misplaced homophobia. He doesn’t actually deserve the homophobia he experiences like an actual gay person would /s)
Show comes out, includes romantic music, lots of subtext, and the writer confirming that it’s a “love story”, as well as the actors confirming they acted “in love”. Except… it’s done vaguely enough that anyone can come away with their own interpretation. Which is nothing new. There’s literally nothing revolutionary about leaving a same sex relationship “up for interpretation”.
All the “representation” actually comes from what the writer says on Twitter. He goes on about how they’re sexless and therefore cannot possibly be gay but are also inherently “queer”… but doesn’t actually add this into canon. So casual viewers are not experiencing any sort of “representation”.
IMO this is a homophobic media trope. Give two men or two women scenes that would be explicitly romantic if it were a man and a woman, tease the audience with “maybeee~”, but still make sure that ultimately, homophobes won’t be offended and can come away from the material thinking “what good friends!”. Say “it’s up for interpretation”, which is something I hardly see with M/F pairings. Especially with the virtue signalling on social media.
Keep in mind, something isn’t “representation” if everyone comes away with different ideas of what was represented. If one person can think “they’re gay and married” and another can think “they’re aspec and in a QPR”, that’s not representation. Representation only happens when something is undeniable. For example, a character who is undeniably bisexual because they are shown to be interested in both men and women (biphobic pannies coming to their own conclusions don’t count here lol, since bi = pan and pan = bi, so even if they claim the character is pansexual, they’re still getting the same outcome)
Now here’s where my issue comes in.
Instead of calling this out, the fandom runs with it and benefits from it. A vague relationship on screen allows them to claim representation for themselves, usually for made up labels like aspec, SAM type asexuality, queerplatonic, etc.
They praise the writer for being “inclusive”, and for “representing” them… when really this “inclusivity” is a result of homophobic tropes, and there’s actually no representation at all. Keep in mind, all the clues for what could be going on come from social media. A casual viewer is either going to see two gay men, or two good friends. They have no way of knowing about the woke “queer” bullshit unless they’re heavily involved in fandom.
The writer has a habit of teasing things and being intentionally misleading. Here’s an example
Not telling what’s going to happen and not giving spoilers, is very different from intentionally baiting. “Wait and see” sounds like a “yes”… because it would be incredibly shitty to lead people on when the answer is a solid “no”.
However, considering he’s only half of the writers, and establishing a relationship other than what he and the other writer discussed would be disrespectful… the answer is very likely “no”.
So just say “no”. It’s okay to say “no, they’re not getting together”. But he knows that people are more likely to watch if they’re waiting for the two to get together the whole time…so he has to keep it vague and mysterious and he has to keep baiting.
Of course the answer could very well be “yes” and that’s what he’s hinting at. But I highly doubt it, mostly because of the “only one author around” issue. So until I’m proven wrong, I will maintain that this is him being intentionally misleading, as he admitted to.
So that’s where I have the issue—I wouldn’t have an issue if he just straight up said “no, they’re not going to hook up, they’re good friends”. What is an issue, is perpetuating classic homophobic media tropes, of giving just enough but not too much…and then saying “it’s up for interpretation”. Which roughly translates to “here’s some crumbs for the gays”. What’s especially an issue, is then disguising this under woke kweer language and lapping up all the praise you can get for being such an “Ally” to “queers”.
And of course, I have an issue with how the fandom receives this. Because instead of calling the bullshit out for what it is, they actually call gay people talking about homophobia “aphobic discourse”, and say things like “gay men have enough representation!!”, and try to argue that actually, the homophobic trope of vague same sex relationships that are left up to interpretation, is actually super inclusive and amazing and progressive because it represents asexuals, aromantics, nonbinary people, queerplatonic relationships, etc.
Or they put down gay people for wanting more explicit representation, because “uhh… some people are aro!!! Some people are ace!!”. Despite missing that non romantic or non sexual relationships between men can be found in pretty much every single piece of media ever, and is 100% socially acceptable. Explicit gay relationships however, are still looked down upon.
And then they act like the religious homophobes, by taking “explicit gay representation” to mean “explicit hardcore sex scene”. Like I’ve seen nobody demand a sex scene when they’re talking about gay representation in G O. I’m certainly not. Yet the kweers always manage to interpret gay people wanting proper representation as “you want sex!!! You want porn!!!”. To me, it really seems no different from religious homophobes seeing an advertisement with two men and immediately talking about how it promotes “deviant gay sex”.
What worries me is that these types of fandoms—who applaud creators for giving gay people crumbs—set a precedent for other creators. They make it known that gay representation actually isn’t needed for media to be praised. They give creators a safe way to get out of representing gay couples—while keeping both the queers and homophobes happy at the same time. Now they can hop on social media and say “no, they’re not gay, but it’s up for interpretation!” And the queers will think this is top tier representation, and praise the creators for it.
As always, this turned into a long spiel lmao. But that’s an explanation of my thoughts and why I’m frustrated. Again—I’m not mad that a romantic relationship isn’t canon. That in itself isn’t homophobic. But the way that the writer and fandom are handling it, is.
I’m not familiar with Star Trek (I do want to watch it, mostly to understand the Star Trek vs Star Wars stuff lmao.), but it sounds like that’s a good way to handle it. If you don’t want to make a relationship canon—that’s fine. But be honest about it, don’t drag fans along with teasing and baiting.
#sorry for the ramble again lol#I have nowhere else to rant about this because the fandom would absolutely crucify me for being ‘aphobic’ or ‘enbyphobic’#as if that holds any weight compared to the homophobia they cheer on lmao#can’t make it clearer that my problem isn’t not having canon gay rep#I’m happy having the two dudes be friends. I like their friendship.#I’m not happy with the fandom and the writer’s bullshit.#asks#anon#q slur

i plan on watching the original star wars movie trilogy so basically can you rank the sequels, prequels, and shows on how worth it is it to watch? thank you
oh man, even though i do love star wars, i'm nowhere near as die hard as some people. everyone also has really different opinions on star wars. my opinions may be a bit unpopular so please take them with a grain of salt!! this isnt so much a ranking as it is a list of my opinions
original trilogy (OT) - it sounds like youre already watching this. it's a classic that i think everyone should experience at least once.
prequel trilogy (PT) - it's funny because when these first came out they were very unpopular. now everyone who didn't like them has gone away, and everyone who is left LOVES them. now personally, i liked them as a kid, but nowadays they are hard for me to watch simply because they are not well made. the pacing and the acting and most of the story is just... not very good. i may be offending a lot of people with that statement. that said you may want to watch them once as they provide a lot of context for other stars media. ewan mcgregor's performance as obi wan might make it worth it at least
sequel trilogy (ST) - another controversial one lol. personally i like the first 2 and found the last one very disappointing. other star wars media isnt usually based around this so it is skippable. but i do think as movies they hold up better than the prequel trilogy, though the story is all over the place. the visuals are really great too imo.
rogue one - standalone movie that takes place shortly before episode 4 (first in OT). it's very good and worth watching i think! a fan favorite as well
solo - a movie about han solo that takes place before OT. some people like it. i found it pretty forgettable and very skippable lol
SHOWS:
the clone wars (TCW) - animated show that takes place during the PT (between episodes 2 and 3), so you will need to have watched that for context. it's kind of a mixed bag, some episodes/arcs are awesome, some are totally weird and mundane. i honestly watched it mostly as a background show. it introduces the character ahsoka who is a dan favorite (i love her too!)
star wars rebels - i actually never finished watching this lol but not because it wasn't good! takes place before OT. i think i liked it better than TCW bc it had more structure to it. it's got some cool characters and interesting story lines.
the mandalorian - my FAVORITE star wars thing. season 1 is top tier. i love season 2 less but it still has its moments for sure. totally worth watching. season 1 you dont really need much star wars knowledge to enjoy it, but season 2 they start bringing in characters from TCW and other movies.
book of boba fett - this show turned out to basically be the mandalorian season 2.5. a bit of a mixed bag but overall good..... but I have a lot of Opinions i wont get into here 😂
everything else out there i haven't watched and can't give an opinion. i hope this was helpful!! it really depends on how dedicated you are to getting into star wars and what your preferences are really. it's hard for me to say what order to watch them because a lot of them are based in the context of other ones which can be overwhelming. like if I had to pick the bare bones approach, it would be the OT and the mandalorian and then everything else is optional lolol. but maybe start with the movies and then go from there. if you have more questions you can message me :)
#ask#anon#the funny thing about star wars is basically no star wars fans can agree on what is good star wars#long post

Totes getting around to this a little late but thanks for the tag @laufire xx
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
32. Not too many, but I also haven’t transferred over most of my stuff from FFnet, which I should probably do at some point.
There’s a crap ton of stuff over there still...
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
88,670
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1) Put the Car in Drive
TVD/TO - Klaroline - Klaus Mikaelson/Caroline Forbes - Post-Liz’s death and Caroline flipping her humanity switch. She books it out of Mystic Falls. Calls Klaus.
2) Can you hold me close (can you love me most)
GoT/ASOIAF - Braime/JB - Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth - Post-The Bang That Was Promised. Brienne ruminating over her feelings for Jaime, over this time with him.
3) When All Sense Breaks Loose
Gilmore Girls - Literati - Rory Gilmore/Jess Mariano - Rory and Jess strolling through Stars Hollow at Christmastime, perhaps finding themselves beneath some mistletoe.
4) A Call That Angers, A Moment That Exposes
TVD/TO - Klaroline - Klaus and Caroline - Canon s4-ish. Prom time. Silas being an interfering little shit and playing matchmaker.
(I’m genuinely surprised how much people like this one because - eh - not my best writing, imo. I mean, the title alone should clue you into that. I just sort of slapped it on there for an exchange lmao.)
5) A Double Shot of Something Good
TVD/TO - Klaroline - Klaus Mikaelson/Caroline Forbes - Post 5x06 of TO with Klaus and Caroline on a road trip looking for Hope. Overnight pitstop. Only one bed.
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I always respond to comments because a) I’m exceedingly flattered and grateful for feedback b) I love interacting with readers c) I can’t hold back my excitement when people tell me what resonated or what they enjoyed
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Oof, that’s a tough one. I’m temped to say The Day They Thought The Saddest Lines or As He Lay Dying because they’re both KC drabbles that revolve around Klaus’ canon death, so they’re both rather wistful and fraught and depressing on the whole. Leave it to me to swim in the hurt!
However, the When White Wind Whistles, which is a canon-ish Jaime/Brienne oneshot set during the war with the dead where the two of them share the same bed, the same warmth, with their feelings laying there between them, unspoken, is atmospherically and emotionally chafing. There’s this sense that they could die before ever voicing their feelings. It’s just--*clenches chest*
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Probably Like A Calendar, The Heart Skips Forward because it shows an established relationship between Rory and Jess. It’s New Years Eve. There’s books and food and alcohol and familiarity. Did I mention there’s an engagement? Because there’s an engagement.
7. Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Haven’t yet, nope.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yeah. It happens.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Not really. I have a tendency to write perpendicular to smut. I’m not opposed to writing it if it feels right, but I guess I’m more interested in exploring the emotion/tension in different dynamics right now.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not on AO3. Now, when I was posting most everything to FFnet--yes.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! (Spite) of Their Lives (another KC oneshot - surprise! surprise!) was translated into Chinese, which I thought was pretty cool.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not on AO3. I have done a few buddy drabbles on Tumblr, though, which were fun. A unique experience, for sure.
13. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I have a boatload of OTPs so this seems like a cruel question lol.
Luke and Lorelai from Gilmore Girls will always have a top tier place in my heart, though. And Klaroline comprises the majority of my fics on both AO3 and FFnet--so there’s that. Love those two idiots.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Oh gosh, I have so many it’s abominable! I’m the worst. Give me the crown.
I have a modern Jaime/Brienne as roommates AU. It’s a sort of progression-of-feelings-and-kisses fic. 50% done. I also have half of a part 2 to Can you hold me close (can you love me most) that I still haven’t finished.
I also have a Hybrid Nightline oneshot that’s partly written. Klaus and Caroline are rival dream sculptors whose offices have been consolidated and now must learn to work together.
I have 75% of Musician/Celebrity AU written for Klaroline as well. It could be so. much. fun. if only I could get the plot to cooperate with my vision.
(Maybe if I write them all down I’ll feel guilty enough to finish a couple of them.)
15. What are your writing strengths?
Being able to portray characters’ emotion and conflicts, maybe? I’m definitely more of a character-driven writer than a plot-driven one.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Timeliness - as in getting shit written in a timely manner. I have so many WIPs I have yet to finish because I can’t seem to find the time to devote to them. *cries* (Adulting is hard folks!)
Also, sometimes I really struggle with working around plot blocks.
Dialogue tags are a nightmare, too. I want to use them to convey state of mind, emotion, not to mention to denote who is speaking, but I don’t want to overruse them, either.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
So long as I’m confident that I know the language well enough to do it, or know someone who can check my grammar, then YES. I’ve written Spanish dialogue before. French too, I believe.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Back in the day, Gilmore Girls or Harry Potter. On AO3, probably Klaroline.
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
Oh, there are so many! Let me think:
Good Omens - Ineffable Husbands - Crowley/Aziraphale
Anything for Pride and Prejudice, anything at all (a modern AU/social media AU particularly; I have a bunch of notes for this one already but shhhh)
The Mentalist - Jisbon - Patrick Jane/Teresa Lisbon - I’M OBSESSED WITH THEM. HOW HAVEN’T I WRITTEN FIC FOR THEM YET? SERIOUSLY. HOW???
Suits - Darvey - Donna and Harvey
GoT/ASOIAF - Gendrya - Arya Stark/Gendry Waters
Harry Potter - Harmony - Harry and Hermione
Community - Jeff and Annie
Marvel - Pepperony - Tony Stark/Pepper Potts
The West Wing - Josh Lyman/Donna Moss
...More. So many more...
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
You know, I’m going to have to say Defibrillation which is for The Good Doctor - Melendaire - Claire Browne/Neil Melendez. It was a canon fix-it I wrote for a friend who also loved the show. It was evocative as it needed to be, angsty too, and it just flowed from beginning to end. I’m satisfied with it on the whole, which is not something I say about my writing often. Or ever, frankly haha.
Tagging: @misssophiachase @definedareasofuncertainty @beautyandwords @arrenemris @gooddame @stellaluna33 @iscahmckrae @kirythestitchwitch + anyone else (only if you want, of course) xx

Scattered Star Wars Thoughts: - I’m about two thirds of the way through Empire’s End and I’m once again sad that we haven’t gotten anything like this in awhile--stuff happens in these books, the huge, big, galactic-level stuff happens! The Battle of Jakku! Rae Sloane vs Gallius Rax! The bombing of the New Republic ceremony! Mon Mothma’s struggles to keep the New Republic afloat and her political enemies trying to take her down! Sure, I love the books for the ragtag team I came to know and love, it’s still one of the top tier groups of new characters, but it’s also that stuff happens in this book, I get a good, strong look at the events that shape the galaxy in this era. I suspect (even though I have no proof) that SW deliberately moved away from this kind of thing, because they were filling up the space too quickly, there soon wasn’t going to be much room left for any kind of big events, between this and Bloodline, especially if they ever wanted to set a show or movie in that era. I sometimes half-wonder if we’re heading for another reboot after awhile, because they’ll want to free up some space or if we’re just going to get more “away from the main action” stories. Which I wouldn’t mind, if they were more like Spark of the Resistance because that was one of my favorite books of recent times, where it didn’t have to have a big impact, it could be a cute space adventure, but it was about characters I desperately wanted to have more interaction with. I guess that’s what was missing from Alphabet Squadron for me, that the new character stuff was SO GOOD, but Hera’s role really could have been filled by anyone. Empire’s End is giving us Han and Leia and Mon character moments, but a lot of them don’t have to be about the big galactic stuff, they can be little mini-adventures set between the bigger ones. On the other hand, the comics seem to be filling that niche more than the novels, and the comics are so good that I’m kind of fine with the priority seeming to be on them--even if I don’t think that’s intentional. (Or maybe it’s just me vastly preferring the comics over the novels, it seems like that’s where the good stuff is happening, imo.) Anyway. Empire’s End. I really do love this trilogy in a way that, looking back, is a lot sharper than a lot of what I’ve been feeling re: current SW. I wish Wendig would get another crack at writing SW, whether for these characters or someone else. And that the Bens would come back and write more, too. I was skimming over their From a Certain Point of View story and thinking about Join the Resistance! and I MISS THOSE STORIES. - I am doing pretty good at keeping up with my rewatch getting finished before the new season of TCW happens, I’m down to 1.8 episodes per day to reach my goal! :D Between that and the way I’ve been booking it through other stuff (it’s been so cold out lately that I don’t go out much, so I have more time to watch stuff) that I’m already a quarter of the way through my 2020 Resolutions list! - I just saw Ryan Bergara, Shane Madej, and Steven Lim launched Watcher and have a handful of videos up, so I’ll have those to watch, I also have a bunch of shows (Barry and Patriot mostly) waiting in the wings for when I finish with TCW, and of course more of The Untamed, and, well, THANK GOD SW IS QUIET RIGHT NOW, because it’s getting to be a bit Much. In a good way, but still! /wanted to grump - I finished the current season of Grace & Frankie and I really liked the first 3-4 episodes, I got a bunch of IRL LOLs out of them, but about halfway through the season it lost steam for me and the ending just felt weird, like, “Why are we going down this same path again? What was the point of that sub-plot?” and it just felt unfocused to me. I feel like, by this point, we’re six seasons in, Grace and Frankie lying about stuff from each other feels very, very retread, especially when Grace and Nick have talked about this before, that sometimes she has to choose him, not just Frankie all the time, and this storyline sort of ended up in a place that seemed to contradict that, and it does help to view this through the lens of Grace still has decades of lying and secrets as routine to recover from, she’s going to backslide, and I’m down for that, but I feel like this just didn’t quite acknowledge that it was part of a pattern she’s still working on, rather than ignoring that it comes with context of stuff that’s already happened in the show. I’m also losing my patience with a lot of the romantic partners drama on the show, like, I think they’ve been on a slow drive towards Coyote/Mallory for awhile and I hate it, I really don’t get any kind of spark between Frankie and Jack, Joan-Margaret and the guy she picked to marry didn’t have enough of a spark to make that storyline all that fun, Principal Dan being weird by the end was just *SIGH* (all the more so because I want Mallory to be with someone who Is Not Coyote). I do very much still love Barry/Brianna, I feel like the show does better at Brianna Is An Onion You Have To Peel Her Back In Layers, so going over similar ground makes sense. And I actually enjoyed Coyote/Jessica, they’re adorable, but it’s hard to get invested when I don’t think it’ll last. I actually really enjoy Bud/Allison and their mutual failboating conversation about their first times was delightful to watch. But I also sort of feel like I’m getting exhausted on Robert/Sol, it didn’t feel like there was any idea what to do with them this season, so they just sort of threw a bunch of things at the wall to see what would stick. Robert being like, “NO THIS IS A BAD IDEA” while Sol and Allison researched Bud’s family history was hilarious, MORE LIKE THAT, less of them keeping secrets from each other like that entire local theater storyline. Or even Sol’s health thing, which brought out different approaches to quality vs length of life at their age, that was a much more interesting story. I guess I wouldn’t mind retreading the same ground quite so much, if it felt like they were aware of it being part of a bigger whole, rather than just doing the same thing again, or if it felt like it was going somewhere (I think this is why I liked the Brianna/Barry stuff, it feels like it’s going somewhere), but that doesn’t mean the cast isn’t still delightful and the show isn’t still an absolute delight. It never feels flat or like they’re Flanderizing the characters, the human moments are still there and very genuine. (Grace and the other young wives was one of my favorite moments of the season! It was such a lovely, warm, human resolution.) The cast still delivers everything beautifully and they’re retreading these stories for a reason--though, I can’t lie, I’m curious to see what the final season has, in the way of a shake-up of the usual dynamics, as well as some more permanent resolution, one assumes. It still remains one of my favorite shows whenever it comes back! Scattered Star Wars Thoughts/2020 Resolutions Update: - Star Wars: The Clone Wars s3e02-20 Current total: 41/260 Scattered Everything Else Thoughts/ 2020 Resolutions Update: - Watchmen s01e01-09 - Bob’s Burgers s10e11 - The Good Place s04e11 - Grace & Frankie s06e01-13 Current total: 86/260 Star Wars Fic Recs 2020 Resolutions Update Current total written: 81/520

I come from a line of corrupted politicians. My great-grandmother ran away though to be with her lover and opened up a bread shop.
3. is there someone yr thinking about rn? why?
GUY FIERI. No but really; I’ve been watching DD&D and Guy Fieri’s like “this is the submarine of flavortown” or “this is the hotdog lasso of flavortown”. Because this show has been running for, like, twenty years, how developed is the lore of flavortown, and how does it compare to the lore of well-loved fantasy novels? It probably has more lore than GoT, that’s for sure
4. what are u usually doing on yr free time?
Prolly drawing or playing some cutes, easy video game like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, or Dark Souls.
5. one skill you wish you knew?
General life skills lol. I procrastinate way too much.
6. tattoos or piercings?
Neither? I’m pretty vanilla. Gotta keep up my elementary art school teacher look, ya feel me?
7. if you could dye your hair any unnatural color, what would it be?
Mauve, I guess.
8. strangest dream you’ve ever had?
I’m super boring when it comes to dreams. I once dreamed everything was the same, but all the windows were on the wrong walls.
9. funny/embarrassing story (if u wanna share one)?
When I was a child and had no concept of death, I literally wanted to kill all men. There was a commercial for like MLP or some shit that was full of rainbows and unicorns and was like “A girls’ only worldXDDD”, so my four-year-old mind processed it as “That’s it, I’ve got to murder all the men in my life if I want a pet unicorn”
10. (for all my theatre people out there) fav musical?
Avenue Q or Book of Mormon. I’m a comedy buff

Star Trek. Don’t even get me started. 7: What fictional being would you want as a pet?
A graboid monster. Just kidding, I don’t actually know lol. 8: What do you prefer for a living space?Houses? Apartments? Condos? Etc.
Tiny houses or studio apartments. I love the idea of compact living for some reason. Victorian-styled homes with tons of hidden doors sound cool. 9: Marvel or DC?
