Last night attended Premiere of WHERE'S DADDY by Philly Filmmaker REL DOWDELL.  I feel this documentary continues the conversation started by Ava DuVernay's @13thfilm in that Rel's film also examines the conspiracy to incarcerate the Black Male, and creating a stacked deck. The number of men doing jail time for being in arrears of Child Support payments is astounding. You may think, "Good! Dead beat Dads need to pay." but this documentary shows the other side, from the male perspective - interviewing Philadelphia based black men of differing economic backgrounds and educational levels, each telling their stories, which sometimes consists of the fact that they have their children with them more than half the time and still have to pay child custody to the kid(s) mother who is spending it on her own behalf. Or use the system against the father outta spite and anger. Or those that are behind due to lack of or underemployment, but putting them in prison only creates more destitution and makes it harder to seek employment after being released.   #WheresDaddyfilm also examines the tendencies of many in black communities to not use protection or birth control, creating babies with people they don't respect and would not be a good choice of a partner with which to raise a child, the lack of marriage or committed relationships in general and having multiple children from multiple relationships. More to come on Tinsel & Tine. Including post screening Q&A video on @tinseltine YouTube Channel.
