See actually i think people skipping to season 4 is exactly the problem, because unlike previous seasons it uses dean as our early pov character to keep what sam is up to a mystery. Plus sam is dealing with addiction in this season, which makes him behave irrationally. This is fine if you watch seasons 1–3 because then you know who sam is and feel sympathy for him, but if someone just jumps into season 4 they come away thinking sam is weird and evil and relating more to dean, whose internal conflicts of the season are made obvious to us earlier than sam's.
And this only gets reinforced as the show goes on, because season 4 begins the slow transition into dean as sole protagonist so there's very little chance that someone who decides they don't like him in season 4 is going to change their mind based on his characterization in later seasons.
So seasons 1–3 are like samgirl inoculations that prepare you for his hot demon blood summer in 4, and without them you catch the deadliest disease of all time, deangirlism.
the thing is that if you show like. spn s4. to a normal smart person they’re like. dean is being soooo awful why is he always treating sam like this. so. i actually dont understand what is wrong with 90% of the fandom
#like i really think people who watched spn from season one tend to be more evenly split#whereas people who skipped to s4 for destiel are way more likely to be deangirls#this is what i like to call the 'only here for the yaoi' problem.#where people fundamentally misunderstand an entire media property by only caring about two shippable white men#but yeah anyway if you show a normal smart person seasons 1–3 first and then 4 they'll say what the fuck why is dean treating sam like this#i hope this makes sense. it's after midnight here so if my wording is bad just hit me with a shoe it's fine
