When I was reading your most recent nm:m essay, I realized that I have the volume containing the chapters discussed (i only have the one book though rip) and I came across the part where Yuka and Shiki meet up(?) with Narumi at what looks like a graveyard or something?? It's in ch 43-44 or so, but anyway Narumi mentioned that Yuka took an alice from him, and I'm just confused by that?

Like, does (or I guess, did) he have two alices? What was the other one? Did Yuka ever give it back? And when the alice or whatever is described in his internal dialogue, it's phrased as like "[his] whole life's worth of love" and stuff which further confuses me because,,, that's not?? how alices work??

Idk Narumi constantly confuses me, so it's not a new thing, but since you have gone through the series with a fine toothed comb, I figure you might know something about it? I wondered if you would bring it up in the essays, but I don't think that whole situation would have to do with Natsume or Mikan (but I could be wrong, I occasionally am).

hi! this got a little long so my answers to your questions are under the cut!!

yeah i don't mention it in my essay so i don't mind discussing it here. in chapter 44, narumi waits at the graveyard where izumi is buried because he knows he'll find yuka there. he then implores her to return the alices she's stolen, from the students and from him.

i understand why it's confusing because yuka steals all of iinchou's alice from him in this arc, but she only stole a little bit of narumi's alice that night when she saw him before running away. he has only one alice, the human pheromone alice, but only a little was stolen. narumi used his alice on yuka two times. the first time he managed it, she was humiliated (and that incident is what spurred izumi to gift her his alice stone, if im not mistaken, so she can be safe from surprise attacks in the future), but for the rest of their school relationship, he doesn't use his alice on her again until she comes to say goodbye.

i can certainly see why this would be confusing, but the stealing alice is a bit complicated, and i still don't understand all the ins and outs of it, where mikan was able to steal luna's alice a couple times without depriving her of her entire power. ultimately it depends on the alice, i think, how much effort it would take to completely take away someone's alice. an alice is a finite thing, which is why people desperately want their stones back after they've been stolen, even a little bit. luna screams at yuka and mikan on separate occasions to return the alice they stole from her because now she has less than she did before, even if she still has some left.

so here, she had taken some of naru's alice, but probably only the amount that he was using on her. he wants it back because that's his alice, and it's pretty well-established in the lore that an alice is a personal and beloved thing (with maybe only natsume and perhaps even yuka feeling differently). i always thought of it like an organ, maybe. you could live with only one kidney, but if someone stole your other kidney, you'd probably want it back anyway. but it's also deeper than that, because naru is a melodramatic guy and he compounds the stealing of his alice with the breaking of his heart.

that night, yuka refused to let naru come with her, which was the ultimate rejection after years of pining for her. he knew she loved izumi instead and was okay with that; he just wanted to be with her, whatever way he could. when she refused, and then stole his alice, it hurt a lot because he felt so insignificant to her. the stolen alice is symbolic of the fact that he feels like he lost his heart that night too, because they happened at the same moment.

so you're very much right that that's not how alices work! he's just being dramatic. in fact he tells yuka to her face at the graveyard, "thanks to you, i'm once again unable to love or be in love," which is ridiculous because that's his responsibility, not hers. hurt by that night, naru has spent the rest of his life (so the past decade or so) pretty cold and apathetic, which is probably why he's such a lackluster teacher when we first meet him. he puts on a front, but he's still callous, just like when he was a kid. he doesn't want to be hurt again like he was by yuka, so he decides not to let anybody into his heart again. that's not really yuka's fault, though, because she only wanted to protect him.

yuka's side of things is that she feels like people get hurt when they're associated with her (she's very like natsume in that way), so she does have the thought of stopping naru's love when she steals his alice. she genuinely doesn't want him to love her anymore because it'll only result in him getting hurt. i guess in that way, they both kind of buy into the metaphor that stolen alice=stolen feelings.

she refuses to return his alice because he will chase her again; and that means less that a returned alice would magically return his heart to him, but more that if she gives it back, it would encourage him to pursue her again. she does leave the other alices behind for the students, but no, to answer your other question, she never does return his alice to him.

naru's reasoning for wanting the stone (and feelings) back is not so he can pursue her again, but so he can completely sever his attachment to her. it's faulty logic, though, because he still has his feelings. he even admits so to himself, because he feels fondness for mikan (and presumably his other students, though it all started with mikan). he had thought he'd shut his heart down for good, but he still feels love anyway. and he still feels it for yuka too: this is all just pretending.

i definitely understand the confusion about this scene!! it's largely out of context. by chapter 44 we still don't know very much about yuka or naru's past, so they're talking about moments we haven't seen and don't fully understand. as we slowly learn more about the stealing alice, it might make a little more sense, but the arc where we get all the background about their past is so dense and full of information that it's very easy to get overwhelmed.

narumi is a very confusing character. his motivations are pretty elusive for most of the manga, and it really doesn't help that he lies to himself so often; it makes it more challenging to pin him down. he IS, for a fact, though, pretty melodramatic, especially when it comes to his feelings for yuka. to him, it's all very intense and heart-wrenching to him, which is why he speaks so dramatically, using grand metaphors and accusing yuka of stealing all his feelings away.

i think it might have been higuchi tachibana's intention to confuse the audience too, by having yuka play along with the metaphor. if we're confused, then we wanna keep reading so that we can eventually find out what they're talking about!! this chapter is designed to be confusing, so it makes even more sense that you might leave it feeling unsure of what just happened.

i hope that cleared things up a little. i find naru to be the most challenging character to analyze in the whole manga. pretty much everyone else i have a good handle on but naru is so weird. i think that's due to 1. his tendency to lie to others and even to himself, 2. his three different personalities (his real self, his cold facade from when he was a kid and now with yuka, and then the flamboyant personality he uses nowadays) 3. the manga's flip-flopping on what exactly his intentions are, and whether or not he's purely motivated by self interest. he's just a really weird guy.

a guide filled with basic info, tips, and answers to common questions that i hope helps people who want to start making graphics

*this was made based on my experiences of making graphics and is what i thought was important to cover but everyone has different ways and approaches so dont feel the need to follow everything on here

what is a graphic?

a graphic (also known as ‘gfx’) is a image edit that incorporates various elements (textures, filters, text, etc) in order to visualize a idea or to create a aesthetic composition 

unlike making gifs, there is no right or proper way to make a graphic so dont get too caught up in the idea that a graphic should look a certain way - just stick with your style and what you think looks good

usually the main focus of the whole graphic

you should always try to use a sharp hd picture - getting it from the original source is always the best option 

make sure the source of the picture allows editing - pictures from public sources like a company or the news can be edited while fansite pics and scans need to have permission asked (and if they give you permission make sure you link them when you post your graphic!)

coloring 

often referred as ‘psd’ because that is the format they are in (i.e. pink psd pack)

comprise of multiple layers that can alter the images look 

a lot of people make their own colorings since the outcome of the look also depends on the image’s original coloring 

textures

smaller cut out images that are often used to decorate the graphic

can also refer to a image that can be use as a background of a graphic

can be found in the form of a png (copy + paste into graphic) or a brush (”painted” on to the graphic) 

avoid using any textures that does not state the original poster made them - you could unintentionally be using someone’s work that was not made to be used [read more about it here + resources that you can actually use]

text

text can be used to tell information or just for decoration

try to choose fonts and colors that are legible

what software can i use to make graphics

most people use some version of photoshop (i currently use photoshop cc 2018) and a lot people have it cracked but if you cant afford photoshop, find a cracked version or a patcher (i used adobe zii 3.0.4 for mac), or are uncomfortable with getting a cracked version then there are other softwares that are just as good!

i can only vouch for gimp since i used it when i first started making gfxs. it is very similar to photoshop and shares most of the same tools and has a similar look to photoshop. it is also probably the most popular photoshop alternative and would totally recommend it if you cant get photoshop!

where do you get your pictures from

official sources such as teasers companies release, photos released by press, photos from idol’s instagram - basically photos that are made for the public to see are whats best to use for a gfx. you should download the photos straight from the source so you get it at its highest quality 

some phrases you can use to search for pictures on google: - [group name] photoshoot - [idol name] press  - [group name] showcase  - [idol name] teaser

remember the more specific you are in your search the better! also when you search through google make sure you check your source!

avoid getting photos from reposting websites like we heart it and pinterest  avoid using fansite pictures and scans unless you are granted permission

i don’t know where to start/i’m overwhelmed and i don’t know what to do/ where should i begin

figure out what you want to make or a theme you want to follow - do you want to make a simple graphic or a infographic? do you want it to center around a certain theme like a comeback or a photoshoot? once you determine what you want to do it becomes easier getting ideas and finding stuff you will need for the gfx

example thought process: “i want to make a loona graphic” →  do you want it to be the whole group or a certain member or unit? will it just be a simple gfx or a AU gfx or based on a event that the group is doing? “i’ve decided on doing a kim lip one” → do you want it to have a certain theme like kim lip smiling or kim lip with blonde hair? is there a certain frame of time in which you want the graphic to represent like during eclipse era or hi high era?  “i want it to be from max and match era with her teasers” → from here you can start finding pictures to use and thinking of colors and textures that would fit your theme

where do you get ideas/inspiration from

i mean it’s different for everyone but for me i literally just think of stuff and i’m like wow i want to make that happen asdfsdfj but mostly when i see pictures or watch something thats where i suddenly get a idea 

but tumblr is full of graphic makers!!! ive seen so many amazing graphics from various fandoms like kpop, anime, marvel, etc. 

some amazing graphic editors i know myself include: primirene, ireone, nctjaemin, celo-mar, 1hyungseo, jeongahn, haechxnie, sonxiumin, syua, lulumelody, dinomite, lovelyeo, joohys, whatchatalkabout, yveu, maerinah, mihyon, lorbits, cherryjennie, thatporcelain, monoka, ifbin, 7ww

some other places you can look at are behance (dont go on behance if you have a cracked ver of ps - it might trigger a ingenue software alert that is a huge pain to deal with), pinterest, deviantart, dribble, and probably any social media platform if you just look up #graphicdesign

remember if you take inspiration from someone’s work then you should cite them in your caption - if you are afraid that you might’ve accidentally copied someone when you were trying to take inspiration from them its best to either try to remake the gfx again or just to ask the creator permission if its fine if certain details are similar/same

my stuff sucks how do i get better

literally just keep on making stuff aka practice. you can’t improve if you don’t bother putting effort. 

ways i’ve forced myself into practicing making gfxs is by: 1) starting a gfxs series - its self paced and is based on what you want to make (i.e. introducing my biases gfx series, my favorite outfits gfx series, etc) 2) taking in requests - people who would request from you probably like your stuff so its a win win situation (i.e. send me a idol + era, send me your bias + palette, send me a group and i’ll make a gfx of my fav member, etc)

tips

only sharpen your pictures after you are done resizing them, if you sharpen and then resize it might result in a more blurry or grainy picture 

always save your graphic every 5-10 mins in case photoshop crashes 

 have two copies of your image cutout: one will be the original and the other one will be the one you edit with - in case you mess up like over erasing or over sharpening your image you have a back up you can use

stick with a color palette so you don’t get overwhelmed when having to color everything and it makes all the graphic panels you have look more cohesive 

on photoshop you can favorite fonts!!! take advantage of it!!! your computer has a lot of fonts saved on it and it takes forever to look through a whole list of fonts so by favoring fonts you can see all of the fonts that you like to use for graphics

combine a png pack to one psd → when you open a png pack you will probably get a lot of png files and it gets annoying having a lot of tabs open in photoshop when most of them are just textures so by putting all of those pngs into one psd you can cut down the files you open and can easily see all of your options 

make folders dedicated to colorings and textures that way you can easily access them instead of looking through your computer for a certain file

name your layers... i dont do it because its easy for me to tell what layer is what but when you are working with a lot of layers its best just to name them it’ll make life easier

lock your main image/subject so that when you play with texts’ and textures’ location you don’t accidentally move your main image

use curves to help get a photo back to its original coloring! like if you have a photo that has a weird filter on it just use curves and it’ll help the picture look more natural! [tutorial]

try warping your text to make it stand out more! you can access it by pressing the icon on the top text bar that has a T with a curved line under it. i use flag and wave the most

alter a particular color by using a selective color layer

rather than changing the actual color of an image/texture you can: create new layer → select the image/texture and color it on the new layer instead of on top of the image/texture → change the opacity or the mode of the layer so that the color is put on the image/texture while keeping its detailing and not affecting the actual image/texture

colorings: can be found on deviantart or tumblr just look up ‘psd coloring’ or ‘[color] psd’ 

textures: can be found on deviantart (check to see if its og content or stolen) simply just search what you are trying to find or ‘png pack’ or ‘texture pack’ common textures you can try to find: vintage flowers, memphis shapes, organic shapes, doodles other wesbites: pngtree, creative market, lost and taken, spoongraphics

fonts: if you are looking for a certain font then you can just do a google search but if you are browsing then dafont and font squirrel are really good websites too some of my favorite fonts: abril fatface, agfatumc, antonellie calligraphy, arcadeclassic, bebas neue, century gothic, couture, daily news 1915, dark larch, hondurhas, kotori rose, krinkles, risingstar, sant joan despi, studly, zing rust

color palettes: i made one myself which you can find here, color hunt, and honestly a quick google search will give you tons of options

  Question: What is the mark of the beast (666)?

Im using this question to deal with a lot of questions I have been asked by fellow belivers.

These questions are many but almost all of them point out to one thing; do we know what the mark of the beast is or we are ready to believe anything that anyone says about it.

When you ask me should I as a christian take the vaccine or will I loose my salvation if I take the vaccine or Pastor what's your comment on the vaccine?

To me you are simply saying, I don't understand the mark of the beast, please explain it to me.

Im going to do my best and pray that God help us understand more.

I posted this under Q&A about twice when I did the Foundations of our faith series in 2019 and sometime after.

Those of you who keep records you might be able to remember it.

THE MARK OF THE BEAST

The main passage in the Bible that mentions the mark of the beast is Revelation 13:15-18.

15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. (666)

Other references can be found in Revelation 14:9, 11, 15:2, 16:2, 19:20, and 20:4.

This mark acts as a seal for the followers of Antichrist and the false prophet (the spokesperson for the Antichrist).

The false prophet (the second beast) is the one who causes people to take this mark.

The mark is literally placed in the hand or forehead and is not simply a card someone carries.

The Setting for the coming of the mark of the beast is where the false prophet cause all whose names are not found in the lamp's book of life to worship the beast (Rev 12:12)

This must say something to you about the saints.

They are not candidates for the mark of the beast primarily because:

Their names will be found in the lamp's book of life. ( woe to you if your name is not in that book)

And because it seems this happens after rapture and during tribulation.

The recent breakthroughs in medical implant chip technologies have increased interest in the mark of the beast spoken of in Revelation chapter 13.

It is possible that the technology we are seeing today represents the beginning stages of what may eventually be used by the false prophet to give people the mark of the beast.

It is important to realize that a medical implant chip is not the mark of the beast and neither is a vaccine or technological implant chip.

The mark of the beast will be something given only to those who worship the Antichrist.

Having a medical or financial microchip inserted into your right hand or forehead is not the mark of the beast.

The mark of the beast will be an end-times identification required by the Antichrist in order for people to buy or sell, and it will be given only to those who worship the Antichrist.

This will happen during tribulation.

Many good expositors of Revelation differ widely as to the exact nature of the mark of the beast.

Besides the implanted chip view, other speculations include an ID card, a microchip, a barcode that is tattooed into the skin, or simply a mark that identifies someone as being faithful to the Antichrist's kingdom.

This last view requires the least speculation, since it does not add any more information to what the Bible gives us.

In other words, any of these things are possible, but at the same time they are all speculations.

We should not spend a lot of time speculating on the precise details.

The word of God does not speculate, it says what it means.

The meaning of 666 is a mystery as well.

Some have speculated that there was a connection to June 6, 2006 (06/06/06)

However, in Revelation chapter 13, the number 666 identifies a person, not a date.

Revelation 13:18 tells us, This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number.

His number is 666.

Somehow, the number 666 will identify the Antichrist.

For centuries Bible interpreters have been trying to identify certain individuals with 666.

Nothing so far is conclusive.

That is why Revelation 13:18 says the number requires wisdom.

When the Antichrist is revealed it will be clear who he is and how the number 666 identifies him.

2 Thes 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

I want to clarify here that I dont believe the current vaccines, medical implants chips and technological implants chips are NOT the mark of the beast.

I also dont find any biblical basis to claim 5G or any other new technological breakthrough as the mark of the beast.

However since the devil will use anything he can access to his advantage, these implants and chips can be taken advantage of by the false prophet to prepare for the actual mark of the beast.

The bible is very clear on one thing; The mark of the beast will not be secretly put on people's foreheads or arms without their consent.

Either under duress or forced or maybe left with no option they will accept the mark fully aware of what it is.

The devil is not going to vaccinate you claiming he is curing a disease then you wake up tomorrow with the mark of the beast. No!

The False prophet will say something like:

"You have to take the mark of our Master (the anti christ) so that you can get his benefits, anyone who doesn't take the mark will be excommunicated from the society and deemed a traitor"

You have to make a choice to take the mark or suffer.

The next thing you need to remember as said earlier is the mark '666' is a name.

So the 666 on your forehead or arm will be a name or a number of an actual name.

It will be clear for all to see and not something hidden that needs a scan.

You can't buy or sell without it.

You will be under total sanctions from the system of that time.

Remember people have been speculating and teaching a lot of conspiracy theories from as long as I can remember and all of them were liars.

Some said Bush was the anti christ, some said Nelson Mandela, some said Barack Obama, some said Putin and many other world leaders bad and good.

These theories had one thing in common, none of them were true.

About the end time events I have one method of judging those who claim to have the latest revelation:

Anyone who gives specifics, names and dates where the bible never gives such is not telling the truth.

The same goes for the mark of the beast, no matter how spiritual any man sounds, they can't be more spiritual that the bible.

Sometime ago when I was in Primary school, I can't remember which year, we were literally forced by teachers and superstitious relatives to put on a wrist band made out of sack material.

Someone had claimed that on a particular date it will rain and lightning will strike anyone without that specific sack wrist band.

The message was circulated wide and far even on radio.

On that particular day, on leaving school most of us stubbornly threw away the sack wrist band and ran home as we normally do.

What happened?

Nothing!

No rain, no thunder and lightning.

And as you can see im pretty much alive today.

Anyone giving specifics where the bible doesn't and claiming what scripture does not claim is either speaking frim his own mind for whatever reason or speaking by another spirit other than the spirit of God.

You are safe when you stick to scripture.

I hope you are encouraged and all confusion is dealt with concerning the mark of the beast.

I repeat as i conclude and I have said this I think twice before on this platform since 2019 "I do not believe medical implants, technology chip implants, vaccines are the exact mark of the beast"

The anti christ may one day take advantage of these just like he does anything to prepare for the actual mark of the beast.

But these technologies and vaccines we see now are not the mark of the beast

A world where you either work for the machines or the machines work for you.

What does that mean for peoples sense of fairness or agency or well-being? Or the ability of governments to raise taxes? The Silicon Valley survivalists fear that, if this happens, people will look for scapegoats. And they might decide that techies are it.

One of the questions I asked as part of this programme is whether we are prepared. We dont even know how little we know; and our politicians seem to know even less. I found one mention of artificial intelligence in the 2017 party manifestos.

When asked recently about the future of artificial intelligence and automation, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin replied that its not even on our radar screen and that hes not worried at all. A couple of months back his boss climbed into a huge rig wearing an I love trucks badge, just as nearly everyone in Silicon Valley agreed that the industry was about to be decimated.

Antonio told me in the race between technology and politics the technologists are winning. They will destroy jobs and economies before we even react to them.

Still, guns and solar panels? Survivalism seems like overkill to me. “What do you have?” Antonio asks, fiddling around with a tape measure outside his giant tepee. “Youre just betting that it doesnt happen.”

Before I can answer, he tells precisely me what I have: “You have hope, thats what you have. Hope. And hope is a shitty hedge.”

The coming of a fully automated society has led some Silicon Valley execs to extreme measures

Until a couple of years ago, Antonio Garcia Martinez was living the dream life: a tech-start up guy in Silicon Valley, surrounded by hip young millionaires and open plan offices.

He’d sold his online ad company to Twitter for a small fortune, and was working as a senior exec at Facebook (an experience he wrote up in his best-selling book, Chaos Monkeys). But at some point in 2015, he looked into the not-too-distant future and saw a very bleak world, one that was nothing like the polished utopia of connectivity and total information promised by his colleagues.

“Ive seen whats coming,” he told me when I visited him recently for BBC Twos Secrets of Silicon Valley. “And its a big self-driving truck thats about to run over this economy.”

Antonio is worried about where modern technology especially the twin forces of automation and artificial intelligence is taking us. He thinks its developing much faster than people outside Silicon Valley realize, and were on the cusp of another industrial revolution that will rip through the economy and destroy millions of jobs.

“Every time I meet someone from outside Silicon Valley a normy I can think of 10 companies that are working madly to put that person out of a job.”

Antonio estimates that within 30 years, half of us will be jobless. “Things could get ugly,” he told me. Its very scary, I think we could have some very dark days ahead of us.”

Think of the miners strike, but in every industry. People could be be driven to the streets, he fears, and in America at least, those people have guns. Law and order could break down, he says, maybe there will be some kind of violent revolution.

So, just passing 40, Antonio decided he needed some form of getaway, a place to escape if things turn sour. He now lives most of his life on a small Island called Orcas off the coast of Washington State, on five Walt Whitman acres that are only accessible by 4×4 via a bumpy dirt path that just about cuts through densely packed trees.

Instead of gleaming glass buildings and tastefully exposed brick, his new arrangements include: a tepee, a building plot, some guns, 5.56mm rounds, a compost toilet, a generator, wires, and soon-to-be-installed solar panels. It feels a million miles from his old stomping ground.

Antonio isnt the only tech entrepreneur wondering if were clicking and swiping our way to dystopia. Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn and influential investor, told The New Yorker earlier this year that around half of all Silicon Valley billionaires have some degree of apocalypse insurance. Pay-Pal co-founder and influential venture capitalist Peter Thiel recently bought a 477-acre bolthole in New Zealand, and became a kiwi national to boot.

Others are getting together in secret Facebook groups to discuss survivalism tactics: helicopters, bomb-proofing, gold. Its not all driven by fears about technology terrorism, natural disasters, and pandemics also feature but much is.

According to Antonio, many tech entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley are just as pessimistic as he is about the future theyre building. They dont say it in public of course, because whats the point. Its inevitable, they say; technology cant be stopped. Its a force of nature.

Even just a couple of years ago, this would have sounded like just another exhibit in the long-tradition of American dystopian paranoia. But the robot jobs apocalypse argument is starting to sound more reasonable by the day.

The Economist, MIT Review, and Harvard Business Review have all recently published articles about how the economy is on the brink of transformation. President Obamas team suggested driverless cars would dispense with 3 million jobs pretty soon. According to the Bank of England, as many as 15 million British jobs might disappear within a generation.

I blame Hollywood for our lack of preparedness. Thanks to Blade Runner, Terminator, Ex Machina and the rest, artificial intelligence is now synonymous with sentient robots taking our jobs, our women, or our lives. Forget all that.

The A.I. revolution comes in the less sexy form of machine learning algorithms, which essentially means giving a machine lots of examples from which it can learn how to mimic human behaviour. It relies on data to improve, which creates a powerful feedback loop: more data fed in makes it smarter, which allows it to make more sense of any new data, which makes it smarter, and on and on and on.

Antonio thinks were entering into this sort of feedback loop. Over the last year or so, various forms of machine learning technology, teamed up with robotics, are making inroads into brick-laying, fruit-picking, burger-flipping, banking, trading, and driving. Even, heaven forbid, journalism and photography. Every year will bring more depressing news of things machines are better than us at.

New technology in the past has tended to increase markets and jobs. In the last industrial revolution, machinery freed up humans from physical tasks, allowing us to focus on mental ones. But this time, A.I. might have both covered.

Machine learning can, for example, already outperform the best doctors at diagnosing illness from CT scans, by running through millions of correct and thousands of incorrect examples real life doctors have produced over the years. Potentially no industry will be untouched.

The latest wave of machine learning is even smarter. It involves teaching machines to solve problems for themselves rather than just feeding them examples, by setting out rules and letting them get on with it. This has had particularly promising results when training neural networks (networks of artificial neurons that behave a little like real ones), using an approach called deep learning.

Recently, some neural network chatbots from Facebook were revealed to have gone rogue and invented their own language, before researchers shut them off. These simple chatbots were given a load of examples to spot basic patterns in human communication, and then conversed with themselves millions of times in order to figure out how negotiate with humans. What followed appeared as a stream of nonsense:

No human, with the possible exception of one Chuckle Brother, talks like this. But the failed experiment proved an important point. It seems these chatbots had calculated, within the parameters of their task, and without human intervention, a more efficient way of negotiating. This is the essence of deep learning: coming up with new ways to tackle problems that are beyond us.

In the same week, Elon Musk (who believes A.I. is a great threat to humanity) and Mark Zuckerberg (who does not) got into a public row about the risks of letting A.I. like this loose. Zuck said Musk was irresponsible. Musk said Zuck’s understanding of the subject was ‘limited.’ But this misses the point.

A.I. is not about to go Skynet on us. These chatbots hadnt developed some sinister secret language. But mega-efficiency or neural network problem solving might be just as disruptive. True, some of the recent fear about the coming age of the robots is probably overdone. Were not all about to be turfed out by bots. And weve always had disruption: people were warning about a jobless economy 50 years ago too. Weve always found new jobs, and new ways to entertain ourselves.

Let’s not forget the wonders of A.I., such as dramatically improving how doctors diagnose, which will certainly save lives. It will stimulate all sorts of exciting new research areas. Replacing people with machines will have other benefits, too: driverless lorries would almost certainly be safer than exhausted driver-full ones.

The most likely scenario, reckons Antonio, is a gradual dislocation of the economy and an accompanying escalation of unrest. David Autor, an MIT economist, reckons we could be heading toward a bar-belled shaped economy.

There will be a few lucrative tech jobs at the top of the market, but many of the middling jobs trucking, manufacturing will wither away. They will be replaced by jobs that cant be automated, in the low paid service sector. Maybe there will be new jobs who imagined app developer would be a profession but will they be the same sort of jobs? Will they be in the same places, or clustered together in already well-off cities?

Drivers alone taxi or truckers make up around 17 percent of the U.S. adult work force. Taxis are often the first jobs for newly arrived, low-skilled migrants; trucking is one of the reasonably well-paid jobs for Americans that are not highly educated. What are they going to do instead? Are the cashier operators, and burger flippers going to retrain overnight, and become software developers and poets?

At the very least it seems economic and social disruption and turbulence as we muddle through are likely. The whole shape of the economy could change too. Some worry about the possibility of growing inequality between the tech-innovators who own all the tech assets and the rest of us. A world where you either work for the machines or the machines work for you.
