Hi everybody! I’m mostly settled in back home and I’m feeling a lot more energized and ready to finish up those last few requests so I can go into September with a clean slate. Thank you all for your patience, it feels good to be back :D
Under the cut are some pictures from my trip for those who may be interested to see what I was up to.
Starting off strong with a black bear we saw on the side of the road! We saw 5 total I think. All while driving, which was be a theme for most of the animals we hoped to see on our trip. One of the scariest moments was when one bounded into the road in front of us. A very close call, but nobody (person or animal) was hurt. (Riding Mountain NP, Manitoba, Canada)
This elk silently strode right into our campsite one morning. I looked up and I had a heart attack because he emerged from the bushes like a reverse Homer Simpson. He was very chill though, went to go eat leaves in the little island surrounded by campsites. He came back the next morning too. You really don’t think about how big an elk is until the only thing separating you is a picnic table. (Prince Albert NP, Saskatchewan, Canada)
Bison, also seen on the side of the road while driving by. This was also the same place where I saw the beavers and because of that I think that’s why this place is ultimately my favorite from the whole trip. I’ve only seen one wild beaver in my life before I came here so getting to see a bunch chew and swim around made me very happy. Also, you could not pay me to get into the water there. Never mind the fact that they had a blue-green algae bloom, but they also had leeches that you could see swimming around just by looking in from the dock. Icky, but fun to watch. (Elk Island NP, Alberta, Canada)
Moose, also brought to you by simply driving down the road. Which is funny because we went on a trail that pretty much guaranteed you to see moose and we didn’t see a single one. But this one was just hanging out on the side of the road maybe 40/50km away from the critically acclaimed moose spot. She was the only moose we saw, and some people were disappointed to have not seen one with antlers, but I say better one than none. (Jasper NP, Alberta, Canada)
Jasper probably had the most cool views. Love me a mountain with a big ol’ glacier on it. There was a nice, cool wind that blew through this area almost constantly. (Jasper NP, Alberta, Canada)
Another elk, but this one was too cool not to share in my opinion. Another from the car shot as we left Jasper. He’s running with the mountains in the background and he’s got the biggest antlers I’ve ever seen. Super neat. (Jasper NP, Alberta, Canada)
Here’s a nice little artsy photo I took. We saw a lot of these purple flowers around and I think they’re really pretty, especially paired with the beautiful glacial waters and rugged mountains. Wish I could see views like this all the time. (Yoho NP, British Colombia, Canada)
I know this probably doesn’t look like much, but I think it’s so neat to look at. It’s a mountain that still has snow (maybe a very small glacier idk) on it but also has a little dune that looks like it belongs in the desert and a refreshing little stream curving around the rock. I took this photo while on a 10 mile (~16km) hike too much elevation gain and the down didn’t feel much better, but on those rare stretches of flat ground I felt like Rock Lee when he took off his ankle weights. Also, 10 mile hike up a mountain, barely any people around, you think we saw any animals? No. No we did not. (Yoho NP, British Colombia, Canada)
I think these birds are called Clark’s Nutcrackers if my quick googling is to be trusted. I thought they were really cute, but also kind of vicious. I saw one dive bomb a woman and steal a good chunk of her wrap/burrito. (Banff NP, Lake Louise, Alberta Canada)
A whole herd of big horn sheep seen while waking around the campground. Some of them looked really menacing. Really big horns and super buff. If one wanted to mess you up, it definitely could. Still really neat to see from a distance! We also checked out the hot spring nearby. Too hot for me, so I spent most of my time in the little cool pool, a refreshing 55F (~13C). (Kootenay NP, British Colombia, Canada)

DEMENTIA 13 (1963)
This was the first real movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who also directed “The Godfather” (1972), “Apocalypse Now” (1979), and (in my humble opinion) the best gothic horror movie of all time, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992). Apparently, Roger Corman told Coppola to give him a cheap “Psycho” (1960) knockoff, and this movie was the result.
“Dementia-13” is about a rich family living in Ireland, so we have a few characters:
Lady Haloran: The matriarch of the family. She apparently can’t get over the death of her youngest child, Kathleen.
John: One of Lady Haloran’s sons
Louise: She is an American woman married to John.
Richard: Another of Lady Haloran’s sons. He is a sculptor.
Kane: Another American woman. Apart from having the coolest name, she is dating Richard.
Billy: Lady Haloran’s youngest son.
Kathleen: Lady Haloran’s dead daughter.
Dr. Justin Caleb: The family doctor.
Got it? We start off with John and Louise rowing around in a little lake at night. They are bickering about the inheritance he hopes to receive from Lady Haloran, but John suddenly has a heart attack and dies! Louise dumps his body in the lake. She returns to the house (they’re staying at the Haloran manor). She gathers up his things, types out a fake letter wherein John says he suddenly has to return to New York, and dumps his belongings into the lake.
The next day Louise gets about her work of ingratiating herself with the Haloran family. She learns that the youngest sister, Kathleen, died by drowning the lake. Louise climbs a tower and witnesses a “ceremony” with Lady Haloran, Richard, and Billy, where they gather before Kathleen’s grave, walk around it, and toss flowers on the ground. Lady Haloran sees that one of the flowers appears to have suddenly wilted, and she faints! Louise arrives and helps to carry the woman to her bed. Whilst doing this, she makes a calculating expression and whispers to Lady Haloran that she can sense a child haunting the house. “She wants you to listen to her,” Louise says, and Lady Haloran, desperate for a connection with her dead child, believes her! Louise sneaks around the house for a bit and finds Kathleen’s bedroom. She takes some toys and leaves, but someone is following her!
Louise heads to the pond, takes off her clothes, and dives into the water. She ties the toys to the bottom, I suppose so that they’ll float up later as a sign for Lady Haloran, but she suddenly sees an underwater grave with what appears to be a well-preserved body of a young girl! Louise freaks out and swims back to the surface. Waiting for her by the edge of the pond is an axe-wielding maniac, and he hacks her to death. He pulls her up by the hair out of the water and drags her away. So Louise, our apparent protagonist, dies, about a half hour into the movie, much like Marion in “Psycho”
Also like in “Psycho,” our narrative focus now switches over to two different characters. First, we have Kane, who arrived earlier in the movie. Remember, she’s a young American woman who’s engaged to Richard, the older surviving brother. Second, we have Dr. Justin Caleb, an old family friend who’s just trying to figure out what’s wrong with the Haloran family. Anyway, everyone, especially Lady Haloran, is freaking out, because they can’t find Louise. They are eating in the garden, and they see the little dolls that Louise placed rise to the surface! Lady Haloran is distraught.
We suddenly watch as a local poacher, introduced earlier as some comic relief, stumbles across the well-preserved body of a young girl! Then the axe murderer chops off his head! Meanwhile, Dr. Caleb asks the groundskeeper to drain the little pond where they found the dolls. Then, Lady Haloran, still thinking that the spirit of Kathleen is trying to communicate with her, gathers some of the girl’s things and takes them to her old playhouse. Inside, amongst the various playthings, she sees the body of Kathleen, but then the axe murderer attacks! Lady Haloran manages to escape, but she faints in the courtyard. The family take her to her room.
The movie proceeds apace. The pond is drained, and everyone sees a submerged gravestone, engraved with “FORGIVE ME KATHLEEN.” Dr. Caleb tells Billy, the youngest brother, that he suspects that Louise is hiding somewhere in town and enlists his help to find her. They go the pub and Dr. Caleb asks Billy about his dreams. He asks if he knows that happened to Louse, and Bily sings about “fishies in the brook.”
We jump forward in time, and Richard and Kane are getting married! Dr. Caleb tries to warn her about the family, but she puts him off. She tells him, “I swear to you, Dr. Caleb, you are a very sick man.” She finds Richard and they run out of the house to a hayloft. Dr. Caleb walks around the grounds. He’s singing the “fishies” song, which has a line about hooks, and he ends up at a meat locker, where he discovers Louise’s body, hanging from a hook! He also sees Kathleen’s body, which he picks up in his arms. He places it by a fountain and watches as people discover it and start to gather, including Richard and Kane (who were making out in the hayloft).
Kane reaches out for the body, but the axe murderer shouts, “Don’t touch her!” It is Billy, the youngest brother! Richard tries to protect her, but he is knocked away. Billy is about to axe murder Kane, but Dr. Caleb leaps out and shoots him with a pistol. We have a flashback where we see that it was young Billy who pushed Kathleen in the pond, drowning her. In the present, Dr. Caleb laments Billy’s wasted talent. Richard asks about Kathleen, and Dr. Caleb says, “He made a wax doll, something to protect, to relieve his guilt.” The doctor then smashes in the face of the doll with the axe! The end.
This was okay, but not quite good. More than just being about an axe murderer, we also have some subtle family drama. The Halorans are a haunted group, mostly mired in the past, so we have inklings of psychological horror, especially regarding the inner torment of Billy. The cinematography is competent, whites and shadows are used to good effect, and there are some really strong images. When Louise dives into the pond, her pale white body stands out brilliantly against the black sky. Her axe murder is well-done, if highly derivative of the shower murder scene in “Psycho.” She claws at the grass; her legs thrash about underwater. She dies and the killer yanks her out of the water by her hair. Now, I don’t want to say there’s a direct relationship, but there’s certainly a resemblance to the classic cover of issue 22 of “Crime SuspenStories” (1954), which featured an axe killer holding the severed head of a blonde female (and was featured in a Senate hearing about juvenile delinquency.) Later, Kane follows Richard through a tunnel and spies on him as he investigates his father’s old workshop, filled with statues and busts. The Kathleen doll is creepy (both the actual doll and the young girl playing the doll). This movie suffers from stilted dialogue and some choppy editing. The actor playing Dr. Caleb seems to be a decent performer, but there’s something just a bit off about his performance here. The whole movie just feels a bit off, probably because it was made in less than ten days, and Corman hacked it a bit afterwards. Still, not a bad start for a new director.
PLAN: Obtain and watch the recent "director's cut."

Southside Arts Collective Proposal to Tuggeranong Arts Centre for 2024
Mountain, river, lake – take away
An exhibition proposal from the Southside Arts Collective.
Artists include Lynne Flemons, Barak Zelig, Susan Wiscombe, Rebecca Shaefer, Nathan J Lester, Domenic Bahmann, Leonie Andrews, Gina Kikos, Louise Cooke, Louise Curham and others
Dates proposed Aug Sep 2024.
Contact: Louise Curham [email protected]
Introduction
In the south, the mountains are our backdrop, and the river is nearby. These natural features shape us when we shop on Anketell Street, look across the soccer fields at Wanniassa or go down Athllon Drive. In some cultures, we know ourselves by our mountain and our river. Here in the south of Canberra, things designed by humans for humans also shape us – the bike paths, the lake, the bogong moth sculpture on the parkway. By next year, Australia will have voted on the Voice referendum. Humans make choices about our relationships - with each other, with the natural environment, with the environment we build together. Those choices tell us much about who we are. Art is about choices and local artists can give us unique insights into a place – that’s what we hope to do in Mountain, River, Lake – take away. We’ll be learning about our place through each other and our work and we’ll be sharing that with the Tuggeranong community.
Visitors to the exhibition will experience works in the gallery and also outside, in its surrounds. There will be a wide range of styles and media brought together to investigate Mountain, River, Lake –take away. We aim to use talks and workshops to share our art making experience with theTuggeranong community.
More about the theme
Artists in the Collective will explore what the theme means to each of us as artists who live in the southern part of Canberra.
Why ‘take away’?
It means something prepared in one place and transported to another, usually to do something with – to eat, or ponder, or use. This can mean fast food, it can mean coffee to go, it can mean the personal ‘takeaway’ from a gallery visit we hope happens for our audience. The Voice referendum will be decided by the time we exhibit, we may still be pondering its take aways.
More about the works
The exhibition will be broad and sensory, using both the inside and the outside spaces of the arts centre. Some works will be by individual Collective members, others will be made collaboratively. All the work will be new.
Formats will include photography, textiles, sculpture, writing, glass art, print making, music, drawing and painting. Effort will go into gallery notes to explain our work and its connection to the theme. Our intention is to make an enjoyable and understandable experience for visitors. We want to celebrate the diversity of our work but also tie it together coherently.
Our public program
We’ll use this to tell audiences about our work and practice. This is also a way to provide a tangible takeaway for participants, giving them a chance to create a piece to take with them, a reminder of the exhibition and the place it was created.
While the Tuggeranong Arts Centre is among the busyness of a vibrant and bustling town centre, typified by many coffee shops and takeaways where people gather, there are also spaces of quietness and stillness by the lake, the river is never far and we all glance up to our surrounding mountains.
[Word count 520]
Public programs
Two Artists talks - groups of 3-4 members of the Collective will talk about their own work and their practice and its connection to Mountain, River, Lake - take away.
Two workshops
Turning trash into treasure - cleaning up canned drink ‘ring pulls’ and turning them into decorated ‘chains’
A hands-on half day event run by Collective members.
Discarded ring pulls from the tops of cans are joined together to make a continuous length of “chain” that gets embellished Here’s an example showing glass beads glued into the larger circle. Once all materials are used the “chain” is installed either inside or outside in trees to add a light reactive quality. This workshop literally links people together and it transforms potentially treacherous trash into uplifting and vibrant adornments.
The ring pulls can be gathered by workshop attendees prior to the event or supplied (a Collective artist has accumulated 100’s). Part of the workshop is to get participants to clean up their neighbourhood by collecting the ring pulls thereby saving them ending up landfill where small animals and birds can be brutally injured.
Community textiles - the community works with Collective artists to make a banner or flag for Southfest 2024
Drawing together many techniques from the group, we will make a combined textile that gets hung for Southfest 2024. This will use photography printed to textiles including cyanotypes - sunprints made using found objects. it will use stitching and weaving and can incorporate ‘panels’ made in other media such as glass. Drawings and paintings can also be printed to textile surfaces. Panels for the banner could be made with specific community groups such as school students, church group members or retirement village residents.
About the artists
Leonie Andrews, Domenic Bahmann, Louise Cook, Louise Curham, Lynne Flemons, Gina Kikos, Nathan J Lester, Rebecca Shaefer, Susan Wiscombe, Barak Zelig and others
Leonie Andrews is a visual artist working in a range of media including stitch and print making. The movement of her hand and the gestures it makes on a surface either by stitching or drawing are central to her practice of observing and responding to the to textures and objects she sees around her.
Since completing her studies at the Australian National University School of Art, Leonie has exhibited her work in both solo and group exhibitions. She has been a finalist in the Dobell Drawing Prize (2019), the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Art Award, the Gold Coast Art Prize and the Goulburn Art Award. In 2016 Leonie was awarded an Asialink Visual Arts Residency in Tokyo.
Domenic Bahmann (1981) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and designer. He is born in Munich, Germany and lives and works in Canberra, Australia since 2010. He is known for his whimsical illustrations, photography, and graphic design. In 2013 he started his creative challenge called 'Stop, Think, Make'. The challenge was to come up with a creative everyday-related image or illustration at least once a week. Since then finding art in everyday situations has been an ongoing theme in his personal and commission based work.
Louise Cooke is a nature inspired mixed media artist and has lived on Ngunnawal country for most of her life. Louise has exhibited locally and her artwork is inspired by the beauty found in nature, paying homage to the landscape with a focus on flowers, birds, waterways and mountains infused with a spiritual connection.
Louise Curham (1971) uses her art and her expertise as an archivist to explore how old media can help us understand our current predicaments in the face of climate change and late capitalism. Louise has a background in film, experimental film, film performance and photography. She trained in film and visual art as well as archives and heritage.
Lynne Flemons is a Canberra based artist who spent much of her life in regional and outback NSW. She has an interest in cultural and natural landscapes and land use practices. In her art practice Lynne draws and paints specific places that have personal and cultural significance. This approach involves drawing and walking on site and researching an area to develop an awareness of its geography and land use, current and often historic. Her paintings are further developed in her studio at M16 Artspace in Griffith. Recent solo exhibitions include Pink trees and lilac clouds at Zinc Contemporary, Seattle and Painting the Walk at Weswal Gallery, Tamworth. Lynne has been Artist-in-Residence at Serlachius Museum, Finland, Ballinglen Art Foundation, Ireland and many other locations including Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery, Tasmania. Her work is held in public and private collections both in Australia and internationally. Lynne has a BA (Visual) and returned to complete her studies at ANU attaining a MPhil (Visual) in 2016.
Gina Kikos enjoys photography and developing her technical and aesthetic skills building her ability to capture the beauty and diversity of both our built and natural environment. Gina takes photos while walking, and she celebrates taking nothing away from the environment other than photos and memories. A part of her interest is to research flora, fauna, and history of things that she photographs to discover more about her surroundings which adds to the excitement of engaging with her world. She enjoys the challenge of taking photos of objects and scenes from an unexpected and unique perspectives to bring fresh ways of seeing our surroundings and the things in it. Gina’s work is celebrated - shown by ABC TV in their weather photos section of the News, exhibited at Belconnen Arts Centre for their PLACE exhibition and a photo was used in a collage streamed behind Icehouse in a concert at NMA to open “The Great Southern Lands” exhibition. Gina also makesglass art (hand cut – kiln formed) and uses her photos of animals as inspiration.
Nathan J Lester (1976) is a Canberra born and raised artist. He has lived his whole life in the Tuggeranong valley. He studied photography and worked in traditional photographic medium for many years along with alternative processes such as cyanotypes and anthotypes. His practice also extends to paintings and sculpture but largely derived from his photographic works. Nathan is inspired by the world around him, the people he meets and things people keep hidden. His work explores the play between light and dark and themes of identity, gender, perception and society addiction to devices. Nathan’s work has been shown in Canberra and Sydney and has participated in a group exhibition in New York.
Rebecca Schaefer is a lifelong resident of Tuggeranong and is passionate about the history and the stories of the valley region. As a recent Diploma of Visual Arts graduate, Rebecca has taken to utilising significant amounts of experimentation and mixed media elements to add to the tactile and sensory elements of her pieces. While Rebecca often works with abstraction, her recent work has been in creating more realistic depictions by documenting places and moments in the region that we would usually never notice or give a second glance in more tradition printmaking methods.
Susan Wiscombe Tasmanian born, Susan grew up amongst a rugged landscape, where the rhythms of life are omnipresent. The ebb and flow of warmth and coolness, light and darkness maintain equilibrium in all living things. Susan’s aim is to evoke atmosphere, mysticism and elusiveness while referencing the natural phenomena of space and light. Susan is drawn to glass for its duplicitous qualities. Like the land and sea scapes of this distant South Island, glass can be beautiful yet treacherous and has qualities of strength and, yet fragile to human intervention. Susan delves into philosophical juxtapositions found in the natural world by creating works that drift between an aesthetic that is suggestive of a mood or emotion and forms that may be imaginary or based on known, but not always recognised natural structures. In turn this leads to the creation of curious and at times whimsical works. Susan graduated from the ANU in 2019, awarded 2 EASS prizes – Alliance Francaise Exhibition Award and - Chutespace M16. She has also exhibited in Craft ACT Members exhibition, Belconnen Arts – Traces -sold 3 pieces, Queanbeyan Art society 1st prize and a 4th.
Barak Zelig is a printmaker and sculptor.
Barak has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Australia and overseas exhibiting prints, drawings, photos, and sculptures. Barak uses found objects to create small sculptures and steel to create large sculptures. He is interested in hybrids, illusion, and the unexpected. Barak participated in sculpture exhibitions such as Sculpture for Clyde, Sculpture @ Show Canberra Murrumbateman, North Sydney Art Prize, Sculpture Bermagui, Lake Light Jindabyne, Hidden Rookwood Sydney, Yarra Valley Arts/ Yerring Station Sculpture Melbourne, Sculpture in the Valley, and Contour 556/18 Canberra. Barak won the 2014 Re-Use Award Clearwater Prize Queanbeyan, the 2018 Staff Choice Award and the 2019 Staff Choice Award, and the 2019 Commended Award respectively in Hidden Sculptures Rookwood. He also won prizes for 2-dimensional works. In 2013 Barak was commissioned to create a stainless sculpture as a gift for the Canberra Centenary.

This is the Canadian Rockies. We visited the Banff Spring Hotel and had a wonderful experience. Lake Louise Ski Resort was a “bucket list” place for me. We stayed outside the park. A single park pass gets you to all national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas operated by Parks Canada. The Discovery Pass provides unlimited admission for a full year at over 80 Parks Canada places, typically charging a daily entrance fee. Visit the Parks Canada Passes and Permits website.
Today’s Mistake-Getting a haircut in Hong Kong.
It was too short. I looked like a man. When I tried to get a bathing suit in a hotel, they gave me a men’s bathing suit, not a woman’s. That was not so good.
Today’s Travel Advice-Go to where the locals go. It may be a bar, a café, the local library, or church. Find out what the local people do in their daily lives. You don’t always need to visit the “touristy” places, just to say you were there. Consider your personal needs, desires, and interests. Follow them. Take a city bus or subway. I’ve always been able to get back to where I started, so that’s how to avoid getting lost, retrace your steps. Ask the locals, they want to talk to you, for the most part.
Check out this Dr Travelbest episode!

Clone Dads and the Weird/Creepy Things Their Kids Say.
Clone x female reader
It was late at night and Kix was driving back to his in-laws. You and kids were asleep, having tuckered themselves out at the lake. The road was quiet, his in-laws lived out in the middle of nowhere. Forest and farm fields on either side.
They passed an old, abandoned house and he glanced at the mirror and could see his youngest daughter, Louise (named after his mother-in-law), waving out the window.
“What are you waving at baby?”
“The clown that was in there.”
“......oh.” Kix made a mental note to never go down this road again.
————
Sipping his second cup of caf, Wolffe walked by the kitchen table, his 6 year old daughter Mira was hard at work on a drawing. He watched her coloring and looked at the drawing.
“Who’s that?” He asked.
“That’s me in my bed!” She replied, looking for another color.
“And who’s that?” He asked, pointing at a man she had drawn. Thinking maybe she’d say him.
“That’s the man that watches me while I sleep.” She said this in the most casual, unconcerned way ever.
“........who?” Wolffe frowned, trying to keep his voice unconcerned.
“He watches me from the closet. Sometimes he gets really close to my face, but I just tell him to go away and he disappears.”
“Uh huh.”
Wolffe scanned all the security footage of the house, focusing intently on the cameras in his girls rooms. He had Mira’s room, Jailyn’s room, and Fern’s room displayed on the screen. No one else came in, besides just him or his wife checking on them. And nothing was ever near the closet. None of the security alarms had been tripped either or he’d have known it immediately.
You walked through the door with groceries, spotting your husband with an Arsenal laid out on the table.
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing.” Wolffe said causally, cleaning his blaster rifle, night vision scope attachment on the table. He spent the night sitting on the foot of Mira’s bed, armored and helmeted, with a blaster rifle on his lap just in case.
————
Fives looked up from his datapad, glancing at his son as he played on the family room floor.
“Here, some for you and some for me.” His son said, divvying up blocks.
“Who are you playing with buddy?”
“My friend Tevyn.” Darr replied.
“Oh, cool.” Fives didn’t understand imaginary friends, but you had said they were normal.
Later that day, he was walking with Darr on the way home from getting ice cream.
“Bye Tevyn!” Darr said, waving to the air.
“Where is he going bud?” Fives asked.
“Home.” Darr replied, pointing to the cemetery.
Later that night, you and Fives sat in bed scrolling through your datapads.
“He probably was pointing next to the cemetery.” You said, trying to sound reasonable. You kept scrolling through the register of those buried in that particular cemetery.
“To what?!” Fives asked incredulously.
“Sssshhhh!” You shushed him.
“The other half of the cemetery?!” Fives whispered with the same incredulous tone.
————
Kix was enjoying a quiet evening with Wolffe, drinking beer and watching a bolo ball match. He looked over at his wife, you were gabbing away with Wolffe’s wife about some crazy police case.
Five of the kids were sitting around the kitchen table playing a game (Jenga). Kix’s newest daughter, Louise, was busy suckling at her mother’s breast.
“I’m glad the kids are getting along.” Kix said during a commercial break.
“Yeah, I was worried my girls would convince Kaia to gang up on Jesse.” Wolffe nodded.
“Oh there’s still time for that.” Kix shrugged.
“Why are celebrities so famous?” Kaia asked at the table. Fern suddenly slammed her hands on the table,
“BECAUSE THE ILLUMINATI!! THAT’S WHY!!” She declared. Kaia considered this and nodded.
“Yes, that makes sense.” She agreed.
Wolffe and Kix looked at each other, then at their wives who shrugged.
“We have no idea where she picked that up. I suspect it was Hardcase, but he has so far denied it.” Wolffe said, popping a snack in his mouth.
————
“So I heard your friend was in the hospital. Is he okay?” Jesse asked his son over dinner.
“Yeah, he had to have surgery.” The boy replied, poking at his carrots.
“Oh, why?” You asked, pausing from making a funny face to get your other son to eat his food.
“I think it’s because he swallowed chewing gum and it got stuck in his heart or something.” Your son replied.
“Um, honey I don’t think-“ you were about to reply when the baby suddenly spit his food out all over your face and lekku. Your husband and son bursted into laughter.
“What the?!” You muttered, looking at Jesse. The baby laughed while watching his father laugh.
“Sorry babe, I was trying to make faces at him to get him to open his mouth for you and...I guess he found it too funny.”
————
Rex walked by his sons room where they had been playing with dolls he had brought them from a deployment. They seemed to be discussing something but they were talking too quietly. He didn’t want to spy, so he shrugged and let them go about their playtime.
He walked passed again just in time to hear his 5 year old declare,
“The holonet is a liar!! Babies don’t come from there!! It’s when mommy and daddy are really happy! Not a bunch of worms eating a bouncy ball!!”
“What?” His 7 year old replied, sounding baffled.
Rex hurried back into the living room where you were relaxing with a glass of wine.
“Hey hon, um....I think Gregor saw more than we had thought...”
“Motherffu-“
“Mommy! Can you tell me where I came from!!” Gregor yelled as he marched into the room.
————
Cody didn’t have children yet. But he and his wife were discussing the possibility. They often babysat the kids of the other soldiers for practice. He would’ve thought they’d be apprehensive, but they all quickly took him up on the offer.
That made him a little uncomfortable, but he was up to the challenge. One evening he had offered to watch Wolffe’s girls while he and his wife went out on a date. It was rare that Wolffe asked him to watch his kids, but Cody had passed the rigorous questionnaire and interview. He felt like he had leveled up then.
“We’ll be back at 11pm, make sure they’re in bed by 8pm please.” You said as Wolffe ushered you out the door, giving your rear a playful slap.
“Thanks again Cody.” Wolffe said, smiling. But his eyes held that deep threat that said, I’ll skin you alive and wear you as a robe if anything happens to my babies. Cody believed it too.
His wife arrived a little while later to help after she got off work.
“Wow!! Your eyes are so pretty!!” Mira said, grabbing your face.
“Oh! Haha, thank you.” You replied, not used to having a small child staring so intently into your eyes.
“I want to wear them on my charm bracelet.” She whispered. You tried to make the smile on your face not look freaked out.
“Oh, heh heh...well, um...thanks?” You replied.
“You’re welcome!” Mira said happily, bounding away to go play with her sisters.
You and Cody shared a look.
“Maybe it’s because Wolffe has a cybernetic eye?” You offered. Cody didn’t reply.
Later, after the girls were fed, you watched Cody play a video game with them. The dancing program tracked their movements, requiring that they perform dance moves well enough to earn points. You giggled as they all tried to mess each other up. Cody was better with kids than he thought, you realized.
Eventually the girls were tucked into bed and asleep, you and your husband relaxed on the sofa and waited for Wolffe and his wife to come home.
“I want kids more now!” You said, giving Cody a kiss.
“Oh? Want to practice making them later?” Cody asked. You giggled.
“Only if you shake your butt like you did earlier!”
————
Rex walked into the house, removing his helmet with a sigh. He could hear the kids playing and giggling down the hall in the family room. He placed the helmet on a table by the entrance to the family room.
“Daddy’s home!!” You announced, standing up and falling dramatically into your husbands arms.
“Oh honey, it’s been so tiring all day. I’ve been promoted to Queen so I’ve had to Knight all the toys.” You said regally. Rex laughing.
“And behead some!!” Orvin said, you nodded.
“Oh, well can I kiss the Queen?”
“Ooooohhh, you may!” You replied, accepting a kiss from your armored Knight.
“Ewww, mom move so I can hug dad!” Orvin said, squeezing between you two. Rex picked up his oldest son easily, but still acted like it was a challenge.
“Oh!! Gregor, come tell Daddy what you have on your face!” You called, suppressing a giggle. Rex gave you a confused look as his youngest son came running up. He had his fingers held under his chin, dangling and wiggling them. Rex picked up Gregor as well, one kid on each hip.
“What’s that supposed to be?” He asked with an amused smile.
“A beard of testicles!!!!”
“A beard...of....of what?”
“Testicles daddy!!!” Gregor wiggled his fingers more noticeably. He heard you snort with laughter. It clicked.
“Tentacles kiddo! Tentacles!!” Rex clarified.
“Yeah!!! Testicles!!!” Gregor repeated.
“Well, we’ll work on that pronunciation.”

and at last, the post that maybe three people maximum have been waiting for...
em's comfort retro rally videos: a masterlist!
in a much-needed return to this blog's roots, and as an antidote to all motorsport- and life-related chaos, i now present to you: the first edition of em's favorite retro rally videos!
general disclaimer/info: these videos mainly come from the group B era of the world rally championship (wrc), which generally speaking was in the '80s. i am only human, so expect a lot of bias toward my personal favorites...which will become very apparent as you read this list hehe. also i'm not even gonna pretend to be an expert on this or anything. a lot of these are literally just based on Vibes
table of contents
i. my top 5 rally coverage videos
mainly coverage for television, recorded on VHS and uploaded to YouTube by some truly incredible people
ii. honorable mentions
not rally coverage, but retro rally videos nevertheless
often documentaries, mini-doc features, interviews
for all videos, i have indicated the language (most are in english fyi); if any links fail or videos disappear, send me an ask or DM and i'll remove the culprit/find an alternative link.
and now, onward!
(TW for occasional flash photography in many of the night sequences of the videos, as well as a gif included in this post)
i. my top 5 rally coverage videos
in which my bias toward audi sport, mouton/pons, mikkola, toivonen, and vatanen are put on blast for all to see 🥴 i am not an expert in anything i am just very good at research and a whore for aud—[SNIPED]. for the sake of brevity, i narrowed my favorites down to 5. maybe another time i will share all the rest!
also, a general note about the commentary: sometimes, the commentary around michèle and fabrizia can get... weird. keep in mind, they were the most prominent female team partnership around that time, and the first to nearly clinch a wrc wdc, and to modern ears, the commentators really didn't know how to act around them. personally, it wasn't horrible for me, i just ignored the weirder bits, but i understand if others might find it off-putting. also for the sake of your sanity don't read the comments.
5. Rally of the 1000 Lakes, 1984 | finland
link: overall coverage (eng)
podium: vatanen/alén/toivonen (full final results)
comments: this was definitely a rally for most of audi sport's drivers to forget: bar stig blomqvist, who came quite close to the podium finishers with a 4:14:01 to henri toivonen's 4:12:57! both hannu mikkola and michèle mouton had to retire from the race, which may lead you to wonder: why does this rank among my favorites? well, it's always fun to watch group b rally cars sailing through the air against picturesque scenery, and this video also contains an intriguing (at least for me!) look at the scrutineering process, with drivers at their most casual.
owie :( they were fine though!
4. Lombard RAC Rally, 1981 | britain
link: overall coverage (eng)
podium: mikkola/vatanen/blomqvist (full final results)
comments: hannu winning by 11 whole minutes even after rolling his car in the middle of the forest is actual legend behavior! anyway this was michèle's first wrc outing in britain, and even though she and fabrizia had to retire, they still did quite well, consistently running high in the leaderboards after the first few stages. and that's considering the fact that michèle had a bad cold for much of the rally and had to ask fabrizia to drive the car to service park for her at one point bc she was so tired. which fabrizia did... with a pencil in her mouth. lot of big names in one video—also, jean todt makes an appearance as a co-driver!
shamelessly poached off of one of my text post edits
3. Marlboro Safari Rally, 1983 | kenya
link: overall coverage (eng)
podium: vatanen/mikkola/mouton (full final results)
comments: ok can i just say how stunning the video presentation is?? the opening sequence is just!!! the shots of the wildlife! the sprinting giraffes! wow! anyway the visual of drivers in deck chairs just tickles me for no reason, and michèle please tell me what you ask for at the hairdresser's and also where you got that orange blouse (this is obviously not just specific to this rally, she always eats and leaves no crumbs). this was michèle's first entry and only finish in kenya (and of course it was a podium mwah). it was also her last wrc entry in the A1 quattro, as she switched to the A2 for the rest of her program in the '83 season. also this is one of my favorite podium pictures ever.
lksdjffnnkd there's almost too much to unpack... fabrizia somehow surviving in high waist jeans in a hot car... michèle's do-it-yourself shorts... this podium picture was the subject of a very frantic video chat conversation between myself and a friend at 2am a few months ago
2. Rallye de Portugal, 1982 | portugal
links: short recap (eng) | overall coverage 1, stuck in the middle of two other rallies. timestamps in descrip. (eng) | overall coverage 2, very vibey with cool music (ita... also peep walter röhrl speaking italian)
podium: mouton/eklund/wittmann (full final results)
comments: GOD I LOVE THIS ONE SO MUCH AAAA! michèle's first podium of '82 being a win? this rally being the one where there's footage of her going shopping with fabrizia afterward? (more on that later) them winning by 13 whole minutes? and that's not even considering THEE most poetic victory ceremony of all time! in fact let me talk about that bc the racing and the win aside, that's why it's so high up on my list! literally poetic cinema! it's night, they're standing on top of the car and floodlit and surrounded by cheering crowds but they may as well be the only ones there in their own little world, laughing at each other and barely even having to look to each other when they're raising their hands—like god! shut up! we get it you're besties 😭
i_just_think_theyre_neat.png
and now... last but certainly never least...
1. Lombard RAC Rally, 1982 | britain
link: overall coverage (eng)
podium: mikkola/mouton/toivonen (full final results)
comments: firstly, if you were to ask me about my dream podium, this would be it. hands down, across all series of motorsport, my comfort podium would be hannu, michèle, and henri in any order. (there's such a cute picture of them from this rally on pinterest, standing in order on a staircase. henri is not looking at the camera because he is laughing at something michèle is saying and it's such a Vibe but i cannot find it wah). the battle for second between michèle and henri ran down to literally the last stage, and their times are separated by seconds, which is just wild to me. the context of this rally deserves another post, which i honestly don’t have the energy to make rn, but just take my word for it that it threatens to destroy me if i think about it too hard! anyway this is just such an awesome rally and i’ve watched this video so many times haha
i love this rally so much that i actually had a character in a story i was writing attend the ceremony captured in this picture as a small child and made it a formative moment in her life. no, there is nothing wrong with me.
ii. honorable mentions
(is it obvious who my faves are? yikes)
'Group B - Avec Michele Mouton' (eng) - taken from a longer feature presentation about group b, a segment specifically about michèle. a friend once described its vibes as ‘a synth wave edit of an 80s anime set in a cyberpunk world about racing’
'1983 Audi Sport National Rally with Michele Mouton' (eng) - in which michèle takes journalist sue baker as a co-driver for a spin in an A1 and a rally win. fun behind-the-scenes video
'Intervista a Fabrizia Pons, la Regina delle Note' 1, 2, 3 (ita) - very thorough interview which is mostly fabrizia telling all sorts of stories, including the very entertaining story of how she found out she was going to be michèle’s co-driver. also what a badass title
'2008 Otago International Classic Rally' (eng) - THE BESTIES REUNITE THE BESTIES REUNITE!!! michèle and fabrizia reunite for a rally that fabrizia convinced michèle to join, they suffer some problems but there are plenty of wholesome bestie moments to be had
'Michele Mouton hurls Group B Audi Quattro up Goodwood hill' (eng) - i mean, self explanatory. the sound of the chirping tires? asmr could never. very short watch if you want a quick pick-me-up
'1990 Louise Aitken-Walker feature' (eng) - a video featuring a female rally driver from scotland and her point-scoring run at the rallye monte -carlo. i am convinced that louise was john finnemore’s inspiration or at least an influence for the character of linda fairbairn. no my hat is not made of tin foil what are you talking about
hannu rocketing around michigan back in 2017 (eng)
hannu flying around goodwood in 2015 (eng)
sometimes i listen to fabrizia's recent onboards (yes, she's still at it!) and this one is one of my favorites, from 2016 (ita)

First time with Misty HC - 18+
Requested by Anon: Headcanons for a female reader's first time, which is with Misty Day?
Unless you’re uncomfortable, I can see it taking place out in nature. So like the woods or by a lake, somewhere where she feels at home.
Misty is a little nervous as she wants it to be special and romantic, would bring candles and incense to set the mood.
Tells you how much she loves you throughout.
Goes bashful when you ask to eat her out, but once you’re between her legs Misty is a moaning goddess.
Since Misty is so in one with nature I can see her not giving a shit about shaving, that’s nothing to do with this headcanon but I wanted to add it in.
69ing and trying to get the other to orgasm first, which means you two practically devour one another.
Caresses your skin and leaves kisses all over your body.
Misty likes it when you stroke her hair during, it sends goosebumps down her skin and makes her even more aroused.
When she goes down on you, Misty moans against you just from how you taste.
Squeezes your breasts, she’s in complete awe of them and your beauty no matter what size your breasts are. She loves them.
Scissoring with one another, the both of you rubbing your cunts together as each of you moan the others name.
I can also see her being into wax play but would bring that up after sex since she doesn’t want to scare you off.
Cuddling one another but moments after you both go for another round as you find each other irresistible.

Chapter 14
Buster caught it good from Natalie at breakfast the following morning. As soon as Connie collected the kids to wash them up and the room was empty, she let him have it.
He was made to understand that just before he reappeared inside the house after seeing off Nelly, Louise Brooks had exited the rear loggia, hair and dress rumpled and a nipple exposed, and dashed toward the bathroom. Natalie saw the whole spectacle and saw Buster too, strolling through the front door a minute later with a telltale smear of lipstick on his face. There wasn’t anything he could do to defend himself when she snapped, “I suppose you weren’t thinking about me at all when you went off with Louise last night? What everyone there would think?”
Oh, actually it wasn’t Louise, Nate, that was a crazy coincidence. It was this other girl, you see. Yeah, that’d go over like a lead balloon.
“I’m sorry,” he said, after giving his answer some thought. “I really am. I had too much to drink. I didn’t know what I was doing.” There was nothing else he could say. Whoever had been out there with Louise, whether George or another lucky man, had either slipped back in unnoticed or left unnoticed, leaving good old Buster to take the fall. He wasn’t convinced that anyone had put two and two together concerning Louise and him, but that hardly mattered to Nate. All the elements to humiliate her had been in place.
“You say you care about me, but that isn’t true at all. Otherwise you wouldn’t be two-timing me every time my back is turned,” she said. Her beautiful eyes were shimmering with unshed tears and he did feel terrible looking at her. He wanted to comfort her, this woman he’d loved since the day he’d stepped off that train in New York and gone to seal their engagement, but he knew it wouldn’t do a lick of good, even if she had allowed him to gather her into his arms and hold her close, which he knew she wouldn’t.
“You know about the two-timing,” he said. “I never lied about it.” He felt the futility of the argument as soon as the words were out of his mouth.
“Yes, but you said it wouldn’t be public,” she said, breaking into a sob.
“Nate, I fucked up, alright!” he said. “I don’t know what you want. What do you want me to do, put on the hair shirt and get out the cat o’ nine tails? Jesus, I’m sorry.” He pushed his chair back from the table and stood up. Now he was angry and couldn’t quite grasp why. Something to do with his stupidity and carelessness but also Natalie’s long-standing refusal to engage in the normal rules of marriage as he understood them. He was angry at everything. He shoved the chair so the arms struck the edge of the table, hoping they’d dented the table’s pristine finish, and stormed out. Eleanor was mopping the checkerboard floor and he ignored her meek hello as he jogged up the stairs and stalked into his bedroom.
He yanked open his closet, pulled out a jacket, shrugged it on, and laced up his shoes. Before leaving, he collected his fishing poles and tackle box.
He ended up driving out to Franklin Canyon Lake where he could be alone with his thoughts. He found an isolated spot and parked the Duesenberg, then set up. The absurdity of it didn’t escape him, sitting on the grassy edge of the lake getting the seat of his pants wet and dirtying up a $200 pair of leather shoes with a $9,500 car behind him.
He had been pretty drunk last night, but not so drunk he hadn’t known what he was doing when Nelly kissed him. She’d made the first move, but he’d been getting ready to beat her there. His thoughts had been returning to her all morning. He’d grown to like her and there wasn’t much question as to why. She was pretty for starters and she had a backbone, which he’d always liked in a girl. He was amused by her sense of pride. Her stakes also seemed very low. She didn’t want to be the leading lady in a romance or even the leading lady in one of his comedies, for that matter. No, it was fusty old Shakespeare she had her hopes pinned on. His first thought upon waking up, apart from lamenting how ferociously his head hurt, was that he wanted to see her again.
Nate’s sad, pretty little face at the breakfast table rose up in his mind and guilt gnawed. She deserved a husband who would be faithful to her; he did believe that with his whole heart, even though he couldn’t (Couldn’t or wouldn’t? hissed a part of him) make that sacrifice. It wasn’t fair of him to treat her the way he did, to be thinking of Nelly and how much he’d wanted her last night. Still, the selfish part of him objected stridently. He had needs too and didn’t he deserve to get them met? Hadn’t he tried his best to make things better before going outside of his marriage? Didn’t he still do his damndest to make Nate happy, what with the Villa and parties and letting her control the purse-strings?
The fishing was good as morning wore into afternoon and afternoon wore into evening, but he threw everything back. Gone were the days in Muskegon where Myra cooked everything he caught, frying the fish up in butter and cornmeal. Caruthers bought the fish and other meat fresh every day and it was usually exotic, skate fillets and swordfish and the like, not the humble trout and largemouth bass his line was currently fetching. When he tired of fishing, he got back in the car and drove home. He would miss dinner, but he wasn’t hungry. He parked in the garage and headed to the east wing, where he climbed the stairs to his balcony and let himself into his room, not wanting to come through the main entrance and risk encountering Natalie. He kicked off his shoes and tossed his jacket and trousers on the floor, and crawled into bed. The hangover had caught up to him and he fell fast asleep.
When he woke up, he had no idea where he was or what time it was. It took him a few seconds to remember the fishing trip, the fight, and the party. He grabbed the alarm clock on his bedside table and brought it up to his face. Almost nine o’clock. He’d slept for over two hours. He sat up, feeling groggy and hungry, and pulled his trousers back on. He padded into the hall. The house was dim, Caruthers having turned down the lights for the evening, and no trace of the previous evening’s festivities remained. He wondered if Nate had decided to go ahead with the barbecue tomorrow in spite of the fight. Even though he would have rather inspected the kitchen for leftovers, he passed the stairs and went on to the west wing. The door to Natalie’s bedroom was closed and he tapped on the door to announce himself before pushing quietly inside.
Natalie was sitting up in bed in a blue satin nightgown and a matching translucent wrap reading an issue of Colliers. She didn’t look at him as he sat at the foot of the bed. “Hi,” he said, giving her toe beneath the covers a friendly tweak. She withdrew her foot and turned the page of her magazine. The cover advertised the new Zane Grey novel and was subtitled A Story of Love and Adventure in Arizona.
He knit his hands in his lap. “I know you’re angry.”
No response.
“I’m sorry.”
Silence.
“I love you.”
Only then did Natalie put down the magazine and look at him. “A fine way you’ve got of showing it.” The expression on her face was cold.
He stood up and climbed into the bed with her, making himself comfortable against the mound of pillows on the vacant side. It was a risky move, but she didn’t object. “I wanna make things work.”
Natalie scoffed.
Her king bed felt as big as a steamliner compared to his double. Even if he had been permitted to sleep in the same bed with her, with its size there would have been no danger of them ever touching.
“You know I still care for you. I’ve never stopped.” Cautiously, he stroked her arm.
“You humiliated me,” she said, not looking at him.
“I know. I deserve to be castrated.” He didn’t think he deserved any such thing, but she was letting him stroke her arm, so he went on.
“Does the whole world know you’re stepping out on me? That I’m not enough for you?” Her voice was trembly.
He sighed. “I don’t think anyone noticed last night. We came from opposite ends of the house.”
“Yes,” she said tearily. “It was very clever of you. But I noticed.”
“Because you’re my wife. My wife who I love very much.” He threw caution to the wind and moved into her space, putting his arms around her and laying his chin on her shoulder. “I don’t want to lose you.” She was rigid, but didn’t attempt to pull away.
“What will it take for you to treat me with respect then?” she said, reaching up to dash away a tear.
Buster sighed again and nuzzled her shoulder. She smelled of flowers and baby powder. “I do respect you. You know what the problem is.”
The silence between them was heavy. After a while, Natalie said, “I could try again to like it, I guess.” She sniffled.
He looked at her, surprised. “Do you really mean that?”
She nodded. “I want us to be happy. I want Bobby and Jimmy to have a mother and a father. Under the same roof, that is.”
Apparently he hadn’t been the only one with the D word on his mind. “Okay,” he said, not quite believing she’d just said what she had. “Well, you know that would make me very happy.”
Natalie laid her hand on his forearm. “And you’d stay faithful to me, if …” She was so delicate, she trailed off instead of naming the unseemly act to which they both referred.
“Yes,” he said. “Of course.”
“I don’t want to tonight,” she said, sounding almost frightened.
“I don’t expect you to.” He leaned up and kissed her cheek. “We can take things at your pace.”
“Okay,” she said. He felt her relax in his arms.
She permitted him to linger cuddling her a while longer, and when she kicked him out so she could sleep it was with a kiss.
Standing in the kitchen eating a shaved-beef sandwich a few minutes later, he felt like the tide was turning just a little. The cutting of Steamboat was going well. The barbecue was still on for tomorrow and those always cheered him up. Natalie had done better than just forgiven him for his indiscretion, she told him she was willing to resume their marital relations. Even so, once he’d taken a bath and was lying between his sheets in his silk pajamas, he couldn’t sleep. He was thinking about the night before and the girl who had attended in her rented dress and had thrown away his flask of whiskey. He remembered too that she’d cried when he filmed the facade scene Notes: Thank you for your patience, Buster kittens, as I adjusted to some big life changes the past week. My therapy is this story, though, so I’m back at it again! A couple notes: Buster and Natalie had servants called Connie and Eleanor, which is a little confusing given that Natalie’s sister Constance was sometimes called Connie and Buster found his happily ever after with an Eleanor. According to Myra Keaton, Buster never stopped loving Natalie, and I do think that he genuinely wanted their marriage to work. What do you think?

20 Years in the Making
A/N: Finally, part 2 to Second Place.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the last of the presents are opened, the couple shares a knowing look and being as nervous as she is, Kensi nods to her boyfriend, giving him permission to break the news to their mothers.
Deeks intertwines their fingers, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze before turning to the moms who are still staring at them with shit eating grins on their faces like they have been all morning. “Okay, now we have one last present for you two. It’s from both of us but if you want it you have to get dressed because it’s outside."
“Is it a new car?” Julia asks excitedly as she looks from her best friend to their kids.
Roberta quickly reaches for Julia’s hand. “Shirtless firefighters?”
Deeks sighs, unable to stop from rolling his eyes as the pair shout out their ridiculous guesses, especially his mother’s. “No and definitely not.”
The matriarchs looks at the couple confusedly, trying to read in their eyes what they may be in for.
Knowing hey have no time for this stare down, Kensi stands up and ushers the two best friends towards their rooms in hopes to get going. “Hurry up!”
As the moms run off down the hallway, Kensi turns back around, nervously looking at her best friend. “Are you sure you wanna do this?”
Deeks shakes his head as his hands find her waist, pulling her body against his before leaning in and pressing his lips to hers. “I've been dreaming about this day ever since I was a little kid.”
She pulls back from his embrace as she takes a deep breath. The way he’s looking at her right now is something she’s never let herself see before. She of course had these instances throughout their friendship where she thought there was something more displayed in his eyes as he looked at her but never had the guts to ask him about it, and now it’s all she sees. “You’re so in love. It’s kinda gross.”
“I'll show you gross.” His eyes get a playful spark as he picks her up, throwing her over his shoulder in a fireman’s carry.
XXXX
After their wrestling match on their bed the lifelong best friends get dressed before making their way outside the cabin, calling after their moms. Stepping out into the brisk morning air of the Sierra’s, Deeks joins his girlfriend on the porch, placing a kiss to her forehead before taking her hand as the anticipation of what’s about to happen grows exceedingly large.
Five minutes later Julia and Roberta finally grace their kids with their presence and are finally able to lead the pair to the wooded area just on the other side of the village.
The four of them make their way past the other cabins before reaching a wooded area with a clear pathway running through the trees.
Much to their chagrin Julia and Roberta follow their kids down the snow covered trail as a light snowfall begins to trickle down on them. “Martin, I’ve seen too many episodes of Snapped to know this never turns out good.”
“Okay, relax.” Deeks shakes his head as the laughter of his girlfriend fills his ears. He looks at her then and his catches his breath at this moment. She’s so carefree; so happy, and he for one can’t wait to spend every day like this, no matter how ridiculous it may be, with her, loving her and being loved by her.
Once they make it through the bushel of trees, Kensi and Deeks are taken back by how perfect the scene is. These plans that they made were more of a last minute thing so they didn’t really have the opportunity to actually come here and picture it, but now seeing it in person, they know this was the perfect place.
Julia gasps as she and Roberta take in the mountainous view and the beautiful frozen lake before them. The snowfall is light, which brings a magical aura to the whole atmosphere. “Oh, wow.”
As they look at the edge of the lake, a woman waves at them, immediately bringing smiles to the couple’s faces. This is it.
The women continue to follow their children before they notice the strange woman a few feet ahead of them. “Who’s that?”
“She’s part of the surprise.”
“Oh, so you hired someone to do your dirty work for you.”
Deeks is sure now more than ever that his mother needs a new hobby. “Dear god.”
As they approach the brunette woman she sends them a warm smile. “Hey, guys.”
Kensi closes the distance between the two, wrapping her arms around the older woman, forever grateful that she took time out of her busy schedule to do this for them. “Hi, Amy. Thank you for doing this on such short notice.”
Deeks follows his girlfriend’s actions and gives her wraps the woman up in a hug, forever grateful. “Yeah, we really appreciate it and sorry about the wait. Thelma and Louise over here took longer than expected to get dressed.”
“Not a problem at all.”
Roberta being Roberta doesn’t like being on the outside looking in so she looks between the trio asking the question that she and Julia are both wondering. “Are you gonna tell us what we’re doing here?”
“Well, you remember that binder you guys were talking about last night.”
Julia nods her head, not really understanding where this is going. “Yeah?”
Kensi smiles as she encircles her arms around her boyfriend’s forearm. “You can throw it away.”
“What? Whyyyyy?” Julia whines at the same time as her best friend starts to get agitated.
“Over my dead body.”
The blonde smiles, knowing the next string of word are going to send their moms into delirium. “You can throw it away because after today it won’t be of any use.”
Realization crosses over Roberta when the couple shares a kiss. That paired with the strange woman standing in the background, looking on with a smile. “Hold the fucking phone?”
“Mom!”
The brunette matriarch finally catches on, tears springing to her eyes. “Wait, so you two are…”
“Surprise?”
Roberta’s eyes light up as she wraps her arm around her best friend. If anyone knows how excited she was it was Julia. “Well then what are we waiting for?”
Amy laughs as the couple turns towards each other excitedly, sharing a kiss before she starts. “So I have it on good authority that you two have written your own vows.”
They both nod. If there were a time to tell each other how they truly feel, it was this moment, even if their moms would coo at them for the rest of their lives.
Amy usher, too Deeks, giving him the go ahead.
Taking hold of her hands, the blonde takes a deep breath. His cerulean blues latching onto those mismatched chocolate orbs that took his breath away for the first time 20 years ago. “Kens, I’ve loved you my whole life and it was only until recently that it was pointed out to me that best friends don’t normally feel the kind of love that I feel for you. You’re more than my best friend and every day that I’m with you is the best day of my life. You make me want to be better, to do better. You’ve been with me in my highest of highs and lowest of lows and I can always count on you. And that smile,” At that moment her eyes light up and she flashes him those pearly whites. “god, baby, that smile. That’s what gets me through a tough day or any day.” He can feel the tears spring to his eyes as he takes in this moment. Reaching into his pocket, the lawyer pulls out a tiny silver band with an intimate blue stone, one that she so clearly recognizes. “I’ve been holding onto this for 8 years.” He brings his hand up to wipe away the lone tear that’s falling down her cheek, seeing the clear question in her eyes. “I saw you looking at it while I was grabbing our tickets for G.I. Jane. I know you don’t like jewelry all that much but when I saw the look on your face as you looked at that ring, I knew I would do anything to get it for you. So that night I went back and bought it. I wasn’t really sure when I was going to give it to you because it seemed too important for just any day so I told myself I would know when the right time was and it’s been in my wallet ever since then. And I’m pretty sure this is good as time as any.” He slides the ring onto her finger with the brightest smile imaginable on his face. “I love you so much, Kensi Marie Blye and I can’t wait to be your whipping boy for the rest of my life.”
The brunette’s jaw drops open, trying to hide her smile as she swat at his shoulder. This is the man she loves.
She has to take a calming breath before she can get the words out. There’s a very strong possibility that she won’t be able to get through the rest of this without balling her eyes out. “Marty, you changed my life in so many ways, there’s too many to count. You’ve been my sole confidant and biggest supporter ever since I’ve known you and for that reason, I will love you forever. We’ve been through so much together; we’ve laughed; we’ve cried. Hell, you even let me paint your toenails and fingernails because I was so bored after school one day.” She shakes her head at the memory. They’re ridiculous, but they’re ridiculous together. “The time that sticks out to me most though is when you were there for me after my dad died. You let me cry, you held me and told me how much my dad loved me and then you started telling me about all the different stories you remembered. You made me laugh when I was having the darkest moment of my life and I’ll never forget that.” He reaches up, cradling her face. His thumb moving back and forth across her cheek in soothing motions, giving her the extra strength to get her words out. “I never told anyone this but that first day, when you showed up to the house with trashy movies and a bag full of junk food…that’s the day I knew I loved you as more than my best friend. I knew that whatever life threw at me I could take it because you were there to catch me if I ever started to fall.”
The pair’s eyes stay locked as they continue to swirl with emotion. Neither willing to break the bubble that surrounds them.
It’s not until they hear audible sobs from their moms a few feet away and Amy pronouncing them as husband and wife until they’re brought back to earth.
“It’s my pleasure to now pronounce you husband and wife.”
He pulls her into him, crashing his lips to hers as the feeling of complete and utter love washes over their entire being. They start to get carried away and are again lost in the moment before Roberta once again makes herself known.
“So when can we expect grandchildren?”
Home Front, Mission 12: Fight For Your Right To… Work Out!
Clash of the Marauders
~
PETER LYNNE: Well, hello there, runners. It's me here, Peter, and my trusty sidekick, Mr. Fox. Miss Fox? Actually, not sure. There really isn't much sexual dimorphism in foxes. Um, let's just go with... Foxy the Fox. Great. So uh, Foxy and I, well, we're still locked in the Princess Louise theater projection box. We're playing films to keep the zoms in the auditorium occupied while we eat, sleep, and of course, work out.
That's right, runners, it's time for some more exercise! So... Oh! If you fancy spicing up your workout with some weight, we've found that tin cans are brilliant. Uh, now would be the time to grab those. Marvelous. Right, now time to start warming up. Do a nice little dance, jog on the spot, jumping jacks, whatever you fancy. Start to stretch it out, feel it to the extremities.
Oh uh, by the way, great news. So Sam helped me fix the looping playlist, so Foxy, the zoms, and I are now watching Clash of the Marauders! It's the video game adaptation, yes. [sighs] Listeners of a certain vintage might remember picking their fighter from the pixelated lineup at the arcade.
See, I could never decide on my favorite. Everyone else had one, um, but should I go with Ninja Vampire? Pirate Queen? Werewolf Scientist? Mutant Rhinoceros? Yeah, in the game, they then fought each other in these crazy arenas that tied into their backstory. So you'd have to fight Pirate Queen on her galleon and Werewolf Scientist in his lab on the moon. That's right.
The film... ah, it makes a valiant effort to tie the stories together, but no one would accuse it of being great cinema. Didn't matter to me much when I was nine, though. God, I really, really loved it. I mean, to a kid who's just stuck in the suburbs, it made the world feel really big and just amazing and weird, like one day somehow I'd be able to experience something more. And yes, of course that might involve having to brawl with an evil squirrel the size of a T-Rex, but at the time that seemed like a very reasonable price to pay.
Anyway, one thing everyone can agree on is that Clash of the Marauders has a superlative soundtrack, so I'm going to run the music through the comms. Let's just dance, or throw some fighting shapes, either way, as we enjoy our title song.
~
PETER LYNNE: So contrary to what those opening credits suggest, violence actually isn't always the answer. I mean, fair. Historically, violence against zombies has often been the answer, but if like me, you are heavily outnumbered, then staying inside is an even better answer. But just because we're inside, well, that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a good workout.
So we're going to start with our old favorite, the hooks, which you'll remember from our Rocky workout. You see, this bit of Clash of the Marauders where the alien pugilist avenges her sister is - and I've always thought this - quite like Rocky, actually. Except instead of the Philadelphia meat packing district, well, I mean, of course, it's set in a forest of sentient mushrooms.
Uh, first off, right, get back into your classic boxing stance. So stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Now step your right foot back a little. Hold your fists up with your right hand close to your body and the left hand in front protecting your face from that imaginary target. Now we're swinging our right fist across the body in that horizontal arc. Do not forget to shift your weight to your left foot as you do it and follow through with the right shoulder. It's the whole body thing. Imagine this nice big thwadoompf! as your fist collides with the side of that invisible specter.
Oh, uh, the alien pugilist is fighting the um, scheming toadstools that killed her sister. So in honor of her, imagine giving those nasty fungi what for. And if you want to make it more challenging, by all means, hold those weights whilst you punch. Right, okay. We're going to do 30 seconds of hooks on the right and then – warning - we're going to switch to the left.
Ready? Three, two, one, punch! Oh, it's lovely form. You have been practicing, my word. 15 seconds down, runners. Now remember, you're swinging the punch across your body in the shape of a hook. Now that's 30 seconds. So it is time - and I apologize - to switch stance so that your right leg is forwards and we're moving to be swinging our hooks from the left. Your 30 seconds on the other side start, ready? Now.
There we go. I'm not gonna lie, it's not quite as smooth, but keep on punching, runners. You show those filthy toadstools whose boss. Beautiful. Oh, nice work! Those mushrooms truly are mush, or at least uh, the ones on screen are. The alien pugilist, by the way, has just been recruited to the marauders, so it's time for her to teleport to earth and time for us to take a music break. So you can keep swinging those hooks if you're in the zone, or just have a bop to this next song. Do enjoy.
~
PETER LYNNE: Ah, Foxy, my boy. Girl. I don't know. When I was a kid, you see, I-I used to get absolutely livid when people mocked Clash of the Marauders. I mean, you know what it's like when you really just love something, it's yours. Someone criticizing it, well, that feels like a personal insult. But yes, as an adult, I will grant you the film has a few faults.
Like the fact that it spends so much time establishing the characters’ backstories, none of them actually meet until the middle of the film. I mean, the first half, it feels like 10 different movies. One set on a mushroom planet, one's on a galleon, one's in the jungle, one's on the moon. The current situation feels a bit like we're all the heroes of different films. It should be the same, but no matter how far apart we are, at the very least we're... we're doing these exercises, we're doing something together.
Us and good old Teenage Warlock, whose evil mentor, by the way, has imprisoned him inside a cursed mountain. So how tough is your life? Young Warlock has to contort his body into the most ridiculous shapes in order to cast his spells because he... actually, I don't know why, but for some reason, Teenage Warlock can only bend the bars of his cage by putting his feet behind his head. Don't worry, runners, we're not gonna do that one today.
Instead, why don't we do some forward lunges? Teenage Warlock uses these to manifest a bridge over the lake of lava keeping him from freedom, but we're probably just going to use them to work our legs, hips, and core. But I'm not ruling it out. If any of you want to cross the lava, you can.
So stand with your feet together and your back straight. Now take one step forward, keeping your knees and feet pointing straight ahead. You lower your back knee so that it almost but doesn't quite touch the ground. Make sure your front knee doesn't extend beyond your toes and your center of gravity is above the hips. Now raise back up. Nice. Now switch legs, do it on the other side. Lovely. So for a little more challenge should you need it, no pressure, hold those weights whilst we go.
So we're going to do 60 seconds of lunges, starting three, two, one, now! And there we go. 15 seconds down. Remember to keep the core engaged and the back straight. Imagine you're a pencil with legs. You're working them, but everything from the hips up, rod straight. And you're halfway there, and that's just like Teenage Warlock being halfway across the lava lake. So just 15 seconds to go, runners. Keep it up! There we are, you can see the finish line, and we've done it once again.
Oh, and by the way, that is just in time for Teenage Warlock's theme song. Oh, love it. Cast some imaginary spells with your dance moves or just keep on lunging. Either way, I'm going to enjoy myself.
~
PETER LYNNE: So how are the weights working out? Honestly, if you're not using them, don't worry, it doesn't matter. Just curious, and it's more important to listen to what your body needs and do the exercise that's going to make it feel best. You know, if you happen to be shut away with someone - maybe it's, just hypothetical, a small fluffy someone who insists on staring at you with their big yellow eyes whilst you work out - just remember that no one else's opinion matters. Oh! Uh, sorry. [laughs] This is time for the Marauders’ big training montage now, so obviously we've got to join in with them, and so we're going to do some crunches.
So if you've got a yoga mat or a towel to hand, perfect. Lay that out now. If you don't, don't worry. But you want it lain out and then lie down with your back on top of it. Totally fine if you don't have one, just a bonus. Right, so your feet should be flat on the ground with the knees pointing up towards the ceiling, then you want to raise your hands so that they're just resting near but not on your ears. Great. So then lift the torso slightly off the floor, but you're using your abs. Don't curve. You keep your neck and back straight as if they're one solid block. Don't try to lift the torso too high, there's no point. Focus on control, that's the point. And keep your core engaged, that's what it's for.
To make it easier if you need, extend your arms out in front of you when you lift up. If you want to make it harder, grab those weights, keep your arms up high. But if you do so, make sure that you are being very careful to protect the back by keeping your core firmly engaged.
Right, we're going to do 60 seconds of crunches, and that's going to start now! Beautiful! Oh, I could watch this all day, if only I could watch this. Beautiful. You've crunched your way through 15 seconds, runners, just like I've crunched my way through 15 hot dogs this week. And yes, I've cooked them badly. Halfway there. Remember to lift with your abs, never with the back. Almost there, only 15 seconds to go. Keep on going. I'm doing it with you. You don't know if that's true, but I'm telling you it is. And we are done! Marvelous. Now if you're up to it, why not keep on crunching straight through this music break?
~
PETER LYNNE: Oh, Foxy. I've always been into my fitness, but even I catch myself watching Clash of the Marauders and I feel a little bit wistful that I'll probably never be able to bench press a monster truck. Still, that kind of thinking leaves me less motivated, not more, and that's no good. If you are struggling with motivation, the first thing to remember is that you have already made the effort to work out, so you're already doing an amazing job. That's the hardest part!
The second thing is you can actually get a buzz from improving, regardless of what fitness level you start from. It's just... okay, perfect example. Take a look at Mutant Rhinoceros. I mean, he starts out pretty down on himself after the accident with the gene splicer, but he takes things day by day, learns what he can do with his new body, and in the end, it's his horn spin that saves the day.
So with that in mind, our last big exercise is one that can be tough when you first try it, but it's so very rewarding as you improve. It's the horn spin! Joking, it’s wall sits. Right, get ready. Stand a little over a foot away from a wall with your back facing it. Then carefully lean back against the wall until your back's flat against it. It's fine to use your arms to guide you, not a problem.
Now you may need to do a little bit of adjusting here. You want your thighs and calves at a 90 degree angle with your thighs parallel to the ground. However, if that's too much, no problem, don't worry. Move your feet close the wall and your knees will then be at a more gentle angle. Now we're going to hold that for 60 seconds, or as close as you can get, starting from now!
See, it's so comfortable. How could this be an exercise? It's hardly any effort at all. You've made it to 15 seconds. Uh-oh, the burn’s beginning. Now you're starting to feel it. Oh, there's a reason we're doing this. Halfway through. Keep your back, head, and buttocks straight flat against the wall. You can do it. You've got to keep a straight line, otherwise the whole game falls apart. It's like a house of cards, but made of you. Right, almost there, runners. Just 15 seconds left. Don't just feel the burn, embrace the burn, love the burn, be the burn. And we're done!
I tell you what, you have certainly earned a dance break to this next song, but if you happen to be feeling as tough as a mutant rhinoceros, well, you just keep on propping up that wall.
~
PETER LYNNE: Oh yes, here we go. See, the Marauders are gearing up for the final clash. You see, what I love about this part - aside from the amazing music, obviously - but it's how it shows the Marauders make a great team because they all play to their different strengths. Yes, the Pirate Queen has a cutlass, but Tiger Witch’s moves, they're all claw-based, and then Flame Dancer!
Oh, Flame Dancer is my favorite. He's just, I know, he's just got so much flair, you know? He just casts these arcs of flame with this perfectly timed hip swivel. Um, I mean, also it is refreshing to have an explicitly bi character in a video game adaptation. [mockingly] "Oh my God, I can't imagine someone who likes fighting evil and dancing and boys and girls."
You know, every single one of the Marauders’ unique fighting styles are ultimately needed to take down Rex Farringdon. He's the monomaniacal billionaire who's hellbent on repopulating the world with clones of himself. So for our final music break, I would love you to dance in your own unique way as the Marauders, too, fight for their right to be themselves.
~
PETER LYNNE: Oh, what moves, runners! My word. And congratulations, you are just in time for all of the Marauders to come together as they send Rex Farringdon and his clones all the way to the mushroom planet. [sighs] You know, Clash of the Marauders really is just by far one of the best video game adaptation movies. Even Foxy seemed to like it, and Foxy has some very strong opinions about films. You should see what they did to the carpet during Cats III.
Oh, this is so nice. This is the scene where the whole cast walks off into the sunset together. Apparently, they were genuinely good friends as well. Oh, I suppose it's going to be a while before all of us runners are able to actually be together, run again. I mean sure, well, I've got someone to watch films with now, but it would be really nice to see the rest of you. For one thing, you all don't express affection by leaving bits of chewed-up hot dog on my chair. Yes, I appreciate the thought, Foxy.
You know, if like me, you get lonely sometimes, it's just human. You might find it helpful to remember that at the very least, by staying safe and keeping not just physically but mentally healthy and caring for yourself, you are doing your part to help everyone rebuild when the time comes. Anyway, until next time runners, this is me and Foxy, signing off.
158.
How many hours did you sleep last night? Not enough, I’m absolutely exhausted from getting up at 6am all week, but now my body clock seems to have reset itself and I can’t have a lie in, lol.
What was the last type of bird you remember seeing? Probably a seagull.
List all the things on your bedside table right now. A stack of books (I couldn’t tell you which ones without going upstairs), a bedside lamp and by glasses case, plus a phone charger.
Have you ever been to Canada? Yeah, I love Canada. We used to go skiing there every winter when I was younger and I absolutely loved it, especially places like Lake Louise.
Who is the biggest show-off you know? My old manager.
What is your favourite condiment to put on fries? Mayonnaise and ketchup mixed together - but only on the side, never all over the top like an animal, lol.
Are you content right now? Meh, I’m okay. I’ve got my period so I’m sore and tired and haven’t had a restful weekend like I hoped.
Do you know anyone who has to wear glasses when they’re driving? I mean, I do, but I wear them all the time anyway. I don’t think I know anyone who only wears them for driving, though.
Have you ever had braces? Nope.
How’s the condition of your hair right now? I cut the split ends off the other day so it actually looks pretty good for once.
Do you usually take the stairs or the elevator? It depends? Normally the stairs or escalator as I don’t really like being crammed in elevators with loads of strangers.
What salads do you usually get on your Subway order? I haven’t been to Subway for years, but I always used to get a meatball marinara sub with extra cheese - skip the salad, ha.
Have you ever made your own cocktails at home? Yeah, as a student.
Have you seen all the Star Wars films? I’ve not seen any of them and have no real interest in them.
Are you hungry right now? Not really. I’ll eat once I get back from feeding the cats in a few hours.
Do you need a key card to get into the building you live in? Nope, just a normal door key.
What colour is the car you drive or ride in most often? Metallic dark grey.
Do you make lists to keep yourself in order? Not physical lists, but I do have lists in my head of what needs doing each day and when. I have a weirdly good memory so don’t need to write things down.
The last person you kissed: did it mean something or not? Yeah, of course.
Do you have any secret hiding places? No, I don’t really need any.
Have you ever thrown or dropped a coin off a building? No.
What was the last takeout food you had? We had chippy for tea on Friday night - I just had chips.
Why are you taking surveys right now? I’m waiting for the food shop to arrive so there’s no point doing anything else, to be honest.
Are your eyes the same colour they were when you were a baby? Yes.
Do you take the pickle off your burgers? Yeah.
Is it AM or PM right now? PM.
What is your favourite soda? Pepsi Max.
Have you ever played beer pong? No.
Have you been to school or work today? Just two cat visits.
Who do you share your bathroom with? My husband.
Is there something more important you should be doing right now? Nah, not at all.
Have you ever stepped in chewing gum? Not with bare feet, no.
Do you feel like life is pretty repetitive sometimes? Sure, it definitely feels like that at times. I think with the weather improving and my riding starting up again, it should start to get a bit more varied again.
Do you know anyone named Eamonn? No, I do like the name though.
Where are you sitting/standing/lying right now? I’m sitting on the sofa.
Are you angry with anyone at the moment? Why? Nature for always seeming to give me my periods at weekends? lol.
What colour is your bed frame? White.
Have you ever kissed someone you met that day? Yeah, sure.
Do you share a bed with anyone? My husband and the dog, lol.
Name all the people you know that you’ve seen today. Just my husband, ha. I tend to do as little as possible over the weekends.
Wham/at colour were the last shoes you wore? Grey.
