i have no idea what level of like. internet paranoia is reasonable for a Regular Person. everyone i know is either "posts whole face, location, and children online constantly" or "has never so much as tweeted a selfie" and very little in between. and if you used to be the kind of person who posted your whole self is it even worth backtracking and becoming someone who doesn't, and if you used to be private did it help at all, and is there any point being a little bit cautious if you aren't going to go all the way and scrub every trace of your data from everywhere because will it really help if someone is actually trying to dox you

Little Thief
This is the 46th post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 35 days left until release!
Today's topic: Little Thief or crime scene re-creation!
One thing I like about Kay as an assistant (and also one of the reasons why she's my favourite "obligatory teenage girl" sidekick in the series) is that she has her very own new gameplay mechanic that only she provides: Little Thief.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/490529828a9b90df216acf91f94fa611/383c7513d21208d1-ab/s540x810/fd5ab1acc15b7f232c6056136c59a41653bd704b.jpg)
Investigations does a great job of introducing it since it's not just a random thing she has but comes from her connection to the Yatagarasu and ends up being directly plot-important because she puts it on the line in the battle against the main antagonist to bait them into staying longer. Apart from that, it's also just a really neat mechanic.
With Little Thief Kay can re-create entire environments in a holographic fashion from the data she puts in. These holograms not only look fancy but can also be examined like your usual crime scene so it's essentially a way for Miles to investigate locations and situations he doesn't have normal access to (e.g. the crime scene immediately after the murder took place). The game isn't always the most exact when it comes to what kind of information Kay should logically be able to input but for the most part it works really well with the lack of information or possibly false information creating contradictions in the re-creation that lead to completely new conclusions. Investigations 1 shows this off especially well, in one case the fact that you work with a re-creation instead of the real crime scene (as a certain someone BOUGHT IT to prevent you from investigating) leads to several missing pieces that you have to deduce from the limited information you have.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c42c24f754851b39b8c5a5513c4b87c1/383c7513d21208d1-d7/s540x810/a9a686000b824169f9c394c01ef56e9891955985.jpg)
Investigations 2 adds a new feature to Little Thief where you can examine scenes at different points in time (e.g. directly before and after the murder). It's a lot of fun and has some great opportunities for finding contradictions and gathering more information. A neat way to keep the mechanic fresh and interesting that also serves the plot really well. In general, Little Thief is used really well, in situations where it makes sense and feels necessary and not just for the sake of having such a gameplay segment. With how long these segments usually are (an entire investigation phase) it also feels appropriate that they're not in every single case, so that it doesn't become stale and the times you do have them stand out more. I especially like the way the mechanic is used in the final case of Investigations 2 as you examine a crime scene from 15 years ago at a location that literally doesn't exist anymore! That's so cool!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/acbaf88583b3dfd13ceeda4edda5f86c/383c7513d21208d1-28/s540x810/4c74958c03d76d7cdd322684a108bb369ecced76.jpg)
One last thing I want to mention is how much I love everybody's reactions to seeing a re-creation from Little Thief for the first time. They're usually a mixture of shock and awe and so fun to watch. It makes sense as Little Thief is pretty high-tech compared to most of what we see in the series and someone not used to it would definitely be shocked to see an entire gigantic green hologram appear around them. These reactions aren't in your face or have much time spent on them (good because it would be annoying to have to discuss its validity every single time Kay uses it), they're a nice background detail most of the time and I love to see the progression of characters' reactions when they get more used to it. Like Shi-Long, initially being sceptical and not trusting it but using your conclusions from it against you when necessary to reluctantly impressed when he sees the full scale of what it's capable of and can attest to it being used for good to genuinely finding it useful and appreciating it to barely reacting because he's used to it and has other stuff to think about. I love it.

Papyrus is Probably a Better Boyfriend than Sans: Part 4 (Kindness and Intelligence)
←Previous (Part 4 of 5) Next →
(In brief: Papyrus is kinder than Sans, but Papyrus and Sans seem to be equally intelligent, just in different fields.)
According to The Conversation, both men and women say they prefer a kind and intelligent partner.
Kindness
Sans is friendly, but whether he's kind is more debatable. Part of the problem is the difficulty of defining kindness itself. As the Wikipedia definition says: “Kindness is a behavior marked by ethical characteristics, a pleasant disposition, and concern and consideration for others.”
Sans is, overall, friendly (“a pleasant disposition”), but he’s no paragon of ethics.1 Evidently, he interprets his promise to Toriel to “watch over and protect" a human that comes out of the Ruins in a selective way, one that requires minimal involvement.2 He does “watch over” Frisk: he appears at several points in Frisk's journey, and somehow knows their LV and whether they've killed Papyrus.
Arguably, being friendly, nonthreatening, and jokey, as well as mentioning how important other monsters (i.e., Papyrus) are to him, could be a tactic to nudge Frisk away from murdering too much, for monsters become more vengeful and dangerous if Frisk does that.3 However, knowing his skills, he could have kept more Frisk out of danger more effectively, without even putting himself at risk. (e.g., using a shortcut to put Frisk in a highly secure location, such as a locked workshop, or taking Frisk directly to Asgore to bypass potentially deadly encounters)
Sans doesn’t seem to show much concern or consideration for Frisk. To be fair, that could be due to his lighthearted, laid-back personality rather than callousness. Aside from Papyrus, he doesn't seem to care much about anything or anyone. Thus, when he seems fairly undisturbed (even forgiving) of murder in the Neutral Route judgments, it's hard to tell whether that's out of kindness, or just because he really isn't that bothered by it. Furthermore, his attitude in the judgments could easily be a pragmatic ploy: he wouldn't want to make the human angry, especially if he thinks the human has powers over time.
Between the two, there's more evidence for Papyrus's kindness than Sans'. Papyrus potentially gives information on every room from Snowdin up to the CORE via phone calls, and some phone call information (such as directions in one room in Waterfall) are helpful. He also asks Frisk what clothes they are wearing, with the goal of tipping Frisk off into changing their clothes and thus avoiding being recognized by Undyne.4) Sans, in contrast, outright threatens a child ("You'd be dead where you stand") and tries to pass it off as a joke.
Intelligence
There are many ways to define “intelligence”, but for simplicity’s sake, just one definition will be used: “A very general mental capability that, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience."
While he seems naïve on a few things, Papyrus’s passion for puzzles clearly shows his intelligence. Most puzzles of the Underground seem to be feats of engineering, as they involve things like pressure plates and spike-retraction mechanisms. Papyrus has “complex manuals”5 on his bookshelf, and considers the sophisticated-sounding “Advanced Puzzle Construction for Critical Minds” one of his favorites. Papyrus's knowledge, furthermore, isn't just theoretical: he builds puzzles himself. Indeed, making a fully functional puzzle in the shape of his face suggests exceptional engineering skill (and style), as keeping it within artistic constraints surely made it harder to build.
He seems to like challenging things, though: he says he prefers the crossword over Junior Jumble because it's more challenging. If he can solve crosswords, that suggests he had deep, broad stores of knowledge, for that's required to solve crossword puzzles.
He planned it all along? Papyrus is a friendship mastermind.
Papyrus's knowledge and skills aren't limited to engineering, either. He quickly manipulates Undyne into being friends with Frisk, despite her repeated attempts to murder Frisk and anti-human prejudice. Indeed, his pre-battle Genocide Route speech parallels a sophisticated psychological technique, if likely unintentionally.
While it’s unclear whether he has any formal training in it, Sans’ workshop, discussion of timelines in the Genocide Route battle, and familiarity with Alphys are commonly interpreted as signs of a scientific background. If so, the positions of physicist or some sort of mechanical engineer are most likely.6
At Sans's and Papyrus' house is a quantum physics book inside a joke book (inside a quantum physics book, inside a joke book, ad infinitum). Though it's not confirmed which skeleton it belongs to7, it's likely Sans's: quantum physics matches up with Sans' interest in science fiction (“especially when it's real”), astronomy (astronomy is often grouped under “physics”) and apparent knowledge of multiple timelines.8 If Sans reads it, that would suggest he's very intelligent, as quantum physics is infamously difficult to understand.
Indeed, by the definition provided, Sans and Papyrus are fairly similar when it comes to knowledge and skills: both are knowledgeable, even passionate, about certain fields of science/engineering. There's no way to tell which is more intelligent than the other, especially since intelligence is hard to define anyway.
Related Posts: "The Green SOUL Could be a Meaniehead" series (about defining kindness) The Hardest Boss of the Genocide Route (on Papyrus's possible psychology knowledge)
Sans is also deceptive/prone to lying, although whether that’s a breach of ethics or just irritating is up to individual interpretation. ↩︎
For a more thorough review on Sans keeping his promise, see Nochocolate's "SANS KEEPS HIS PROMISE (KINDA)". ↩︎
See Undyne the Undying, Dogaressa if Dogamy if killed, and RG01 and RG02 in the Genocide Route. ↩︎
Not that it helps, but he tried. ↩︎
Admittedly, that description is coming from a child. (Whether it's from Frisk or from Chara, as per the NarraChara theory) ↩︎
He likely can’t be an astronomer, as it would be very difficult or even impossible to study outer space when sealed underground. ↩︎
One might say it can’t possibly be Papyrus, because he hates jokes and puns. However, that isn't true. He apparently just doesn’t like Sans’ jokes and puns. ↩︎
One mainstream interpretation of quantum mechanics is the “many-worlds interpretation”, which aligns well with the alternate timelines of Undertale. ↩︎

How to Create a Social Media Marketing Strategy for 2019 and Beyond
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c99442eb17eff61f4bab864d6d43f26e/c3f5f311f6ace1dc-09/s540x810/723de92ccea9e81cb85ecb0a8ac4f282f4c71a61.jpg)
The key ingredient for doing social media marketing well is having a strategy.
Without a strategy, you might be posting on social media platforms for the sake of posting. Without understanding what your goals are, who your target audience is, and what they want, it’ll be hard to achieve results on social media.
Whether you want to grow your brand through social media or to level up as a social media marketer, developing a social media marketing strategy is essential.
Here’s one way to do it.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/41c00b7ef80f989a6a62cf28b68ebdd9/c3f5f311f6ace1dc-01/s540x810/ffe5f2c13b16666ea7b911adc0704332c4bfcb6e.jpg)
How to create a social media marketing strategy
It’s interesting to note that a social media marketing strategy and a social media marketing plan have a lot of crossovers.
You can think of it this way: A strategy is where you’re headed. A plan is how you’ll get there.
One of the simplest ways to create your social media marketing strategy is to ask yourself the 5Ws:
Why do you want to be on social media?
Who is your target audience?
What are you going to share?
Where are you going share?
When are you going share?
To help you create your strategy, I have made a simple social media marketing strategy template. Feel free to use, adapt, or modify it as you see fit (after making a copy of it).
Here’s another interesting point about strategy (or strategies): You can also have a strategy for each of your social media channels, such as a Facebook marketing strategy, an Instagram marketing strategy, and so on, which all lead up to your overall social media marketing strategy.
But let’s start with your overall strategy.
1. Why does your business want to be on social media?
The very first question to answer is the Why.
This relates to your social media goals. Are you on social media to promote your products? To drive traffic to your website? Or to serve your customers?
In general, there are the nine social media goals you can have:
Increase brand awareness
Drive traffic to your website
Generate new leads
Grow revenue (by increasing signups or sales)
Boost brand engagement
Build a community around your business
Provide social customer service
Increase mentions in the press
Listen to conversations about your brand
You’ll likely have more than one social media goal, and that’s fine.
Generally, it’s great to focus on just a handful of goals unless you have a team, where different people or groups within the team can take on different goals.
For example, at Buffer, the marketing team uses social media both to increase our brand awareness and drive traffic to our content while our Advocacy team uses social media to provide timely customer support.
2. Who is your target audience?
Once you have figured out your Why, the next thing to consider is your target audience.
Understanding your target audience will help you more easily answer the following questions on what, where, and when you are going to share.
For instance, if a travel and lifestyle brand (like Away) knows that its target audience loves to read about new places and travel tips, it could share such content on its social media profiles.

A great exercise to try here is to build marketing personas.
There are many different ways of building marketing personas. My personal favorite approach is to, again, use the 5Ws and 1H.
Who are they? (E.g. job title, age, gender, salary, location, etc.)
What are they interested in that you can provide? (E.g. entertainment, educational content, case studies, information on new products, etc.)
Where do they usually hang out online? (E.g. Facebook, Instagram, etc. or niche platforms)
When do they look for the type of content you can provide? (E.g. weekends, during their daily commute, etc.)
Why do they consume the content? (E.g. to get better at their job, to become healthy, to stay up to date with something, etc.)
How do they consume the content? (E.g. read social media posts, watch videos, etc.)
You likely don’t have to start from scratch. If your business has been running for a while, you most probably already have a good sense of your target audience. What might be helpful is to write it down so that you can share it with the team or use for your future reference.
To help you with developing your marketing persona, Kevan Lee, our Director of Marketing, have written a complete guide to marketing personas.
3. What are you going to share?
When you see this question, you might be thinking about the types of content to share. For example, do you want to share videos or images?
But hold on for a second!
We’re talking about your social media marketing strategy here so let’s take a step back and think on a higher level. Instead of the types of content to share, “theme” might be a better word.
Here are a few brands and their theme(s):
MeUndies, an underwear brand, shares photos from their customers and photos of their products on their Instagram profile.
Huckberry, an outdoor and adventure brand, shares their editorial content and high-quality photos of the outdoors on their Facebook profile.
Burrow, a luxury couch brand, mostly shares memes on their Instagram profile.

If you scroll through the social media profiles mentioned above, you might have noticed that the brands have more than one main theme. Having a handful of themes is perfectly fine as it gives you the space to share a range of content to keep your audience engaged without being seemingly unfocused.
This is where a good understanding of your target audience will be helpful. Look at your marketing personas and consider the following questions:
What goals and challenges do they have?
How can you help solve them?
For a fitness apparel and accessories brand (like Gymshark), a goal of its target audience might be to stay up-to-date with the latest fitness gears. In that case, it can share its latest products on its social media profiles.

(Would that be too promotional? Maybe not. Investment bank Piper Jaffray surveyed more than 8,600 American teenagers and found that 70 percent of them preferred brands to contact them about new products through Instagram. The key goes back to understanding your target audience.)
4. Where are you going share?
The next step is to determine where you are going to share your content. In other words, which social media platforms does your brand want to be on?
(Related: Here are the top 21 social media sites to consider for your brand.)
Before we go any further, remember that your brand doesn’t have to be on every social media platforms. We have made that mistake before. Being on fewer platforms gives you a better focus and more time to create better content.
Quick tip: That being said, it’ll be wise to at least have a complete profile on the Big Four — Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn — as they would often show up on the first page of Google search results when people search for your brand.
Again, your understanding of your target audience will come in handy here. Which platforms are your target audience most active on? What makes them visit that platform? For example, teenagers and young adults might like scrolling through Instagram when they are bored to see what their friends are doing or whether their favorite brands have new products.
Another, albeit smaller, thing to consider is, what is your brand’s “X factor”? Are you great at photography, videos, or writing? Certain platforms lend itself well to certain content types. For example, photos are great on Instagram, long-form videos on YouTube, articles on Medium. But this is a minor point because social media platforms are evolving to provide almost every type of content nowadays.
Finally, consider smaller, niche platforms, too. For example, Zwift, a multiplayer online cycling training software company, has started a club on Strava, a social network for athletes. Their club has more than 57,000 cyclists, and thousands engage with their posts on Strava.
5. When are you going share?
The last key part of your strategy is figuring out when you want to share your content. You might be tempted to jump into a research for the best time(s) to post.
Pause. And breathe.
Let’s take a step back and look at this from a higher level again. Before deciding exactly which time of the day and days of the week you want to post, consider the behaviors of your target audience.
When do they usually use social media to find the type of content that you’ll share?
Here are some examples to consider:
Sports fans are likely on social media just before, during, and just after sports events to find and interact with content about the event.
Athletes might be on Instagram while they are cooling down after their morning or evening workouts.
People who love to travel might be more active on social media during the weekends when they are planning for their next trip (or during their work breaks when they are dreaming about their next trip).
Mothers of babies might be scrolling through social media when they are breastfeeding in the middle of the night.
You might have inferred from these few examples that there might not be a universal best time to post. It really depends on your audience. So for this step, focus on the general behavior patterns of your target audience.
When you have created your social media marketing strategy, you can then find your brand’s best time to post through experimentation.
Finally, how are you going to execute this strategy?
And there you have it — your social media marketing strategy!
But that’s not the end. As mentioned above, a strategy is where you’re headed; a plan is how you’ll get there. You have decided where to head to; now you need a plan.
How should you fill out your social media profiles? What should your tone and voice be like? What posts type (i.e. image, link, video, etc.) should you use?
To help you with the next step and your social media success, we have a step-by-step guide for creating a social media marketing plan. Here’s a sneak peek of the infographic you’ll find in that guide:
Focus on the big picture
Developing a social media marketing strategy is probably one of the hardest things to do because it requires you to step back and look at the big picture. You have to shift your mindset away from your daily tasks like scheduling and replying to comments to higher-level thinking.
But it’s greatly rewarding and helpful to have a social media marketing strategy so that you aren’t just posting content just for the sake of posting content. It’ll help you achieve your social media and business goals.

Spec and Motifs/Themes for S9
I’m about to write something that should probably be multiple posts, but, alas, you’ll get one giant tome of my ramblings that will all be proven wrong in a little over 24 hours.
I am currently powered by punchiness that follows a very long week, low sleep levels, leftover rotisserie chicken that I almost ate with a spoon instead of a fork, a couple Tootsie Pops in G Callen’s honor, and some chocolate milk. I did promise (okay, 2 weeks ago) @sspaz1000 and @mashmaiden speculation. (They’ll regret asking!)
Before I start on my theories, a few things of note:
Thank you to those who have listened to my ramblings and talked with me this season. Some of those talks have actually led to thoughts behind the cut. To those who tolerated me: @aprylynn, @chicgeekgirl89, @raccoonsmate4life, @s-sdensi, and @ishiptoomanypeopleontv. Always ever patient and so sweet. You guys rock! These people are also whom you should probably see for Densi spec and reflection, which I won’t do too much of -- though, I could. I’ll touch on it briefly, but I’m not an expert.
Beneath the cut you’ll find a few different theories, reflections on motifs/themes from S9, and why I still cite Mr. Bartels as the King of Foreshadowing. Plus, lots of words. I might cut myself off on some of these, as feel free to ask for elaboration!
A quick look at the season, and you’ll see some repeated themes and motifs. You can say that about past seasons, and some have played bigger roles over the years, e.g. duplicity, identity issues, etc.
This year has been about consequences: the team merits a firmer hand, Sam lost his wife, the job’s dangerous and makes your loved ones worry (see: Deeks), and we see a repeat of things come back to bite people later on -- which adds some depth to dragging some of the baddies’ plots out across the season and with 2 eps or more. Hetty’s whole arcs deal with consequences: her team left someone behind, and she feels responsible. Many veteran agents and figures suffer from Agent Orange. Keane’s back, but what life does he come back to? Etc. Plus, see: Kensi/Deeks. Deeks almost appears to be stalling the wedding and trying to hide his hesitation with disagreements and secret wedding venue scouting since Kensi was catching on to the avoidance. Like I said, though, I won’t talk about them too much.
With Hetty and the new Boss, one could easily argue that the ep ends with the team in serious peril. We’ll know they’ll make it out, but the question is how would they survive such a pickle (much like in the “Deep Trouble” episodes - Shane Brennan even conceded in an interview we all knew Callen and Sam would survive, the question was always “How?”). The team, nay, the Team, nay, THE TEAM (TM) has been at the center of the season even when separate. Their future as a TEAM(TM) has been questioned/discussed. It would make sense something narratively happened, and they already go in at odds. Does this mean the whole TEAM is in trouble? Or do they accidentally or on purpose out of necessity, have to leave someone behind, perhaps assuming they’re dead, e.g. Keane? Having to get an injured member out of a foreign country off the books? Eep. (Speaking of TEAM, man, am I worried about Hidoko. Anyone else?)
So, that’s one set of theories. The other I’ve had for a while, and it’s been building up with some of the eps, namely Bartels’, and the portrayal of certain dynamics plus other plots. With BTS stuff and now Gemmill’s interview, it seems the theories are solid, but we’ll see. They could be a misdirect.
Narrative-wise, it would make a lot of sense that something very serious happens to Callen:
His relationship with Mosley has been soooooo contentious, up until they started to get along and connect by relating to each other. While repetitive, they may have wanted to really amp it up -- and they did so by making either one of them, at any time, amped up past 10 -- to contrast the finale and latter half of the season. At times, it seemed like caricatures of either of them to keep them at ends. He’s the one who explicitly promised to get the kid back, and when it comes to kids, we know G goes all in -- and then some.
Remember how I mentioned Bartels? Well, I’ve talked ad nauseum (I’m sorry!) before about his love of foreshadowing with not only references, but clever parallels. All the way back to the “The Grey Man,” we knew he seemed to know where G’s story was headed. He paralleled the dad in it with G’s. (He also had an “Amy” in it, and I’m still convinced he knows that Amy Callen lives! See also: the brother/sister surviving in “Driving Miss Diaz.” Sure, you could argue that foreshadowed Alex, but don’t rain on my parade!) Well, the first big Bartels ep was *drum roll* the Joelle episode. Despite their history, plus her constant taunting and pissiness, G never ever stopped helping her. He constantly noted, “I’m doing this for the kid.” That’s all she had to say to get him to help, and she knew it. She also knew she could trust him, despite their history. No matter what, he helped her, and she kept asking HIM for help. The rogue sect knew she’d go to him, probably based on what she reported. He helped her fake her death, knowing it was bad situation for the kid and dad who deserved to know. She asked him to help her some more. Why? Because she knew he’d always do the right thing. If she got into danger, he’d help her. Mosley saw the same in him, in addition to his capability. (You could draw more potential parallels to Mosley and Joelle, and I will later*, which you can read or not.) So, G jumping through hoops for a mom and her kid? Check.
Bartels’ next stop? Garrison gets traded. *still crying but also thinking about how COD and all these people are such pretty criers* Anyway, I’m gonna pull myself together. He made a very big deal about how it was his duty to keep helping families, noting to G that if his sacrifice saved and reunited another family, it would all be worth it. It seems likely we’ll see G follow in his father’s footsteps, as he has with both of his parents his whole life, even before he realized it. Perhaps he trades himself for Mosley’s son, or uses himself as a distraction/sacrifice, or he soldiers on despite a head injury to make sure the mission is completed -- and suffers delayed consequences, e.g. hematoma. G seems the most likely to sacrifice himself. He also would see himself as the most expendable. His attachments are withering and commitments lessened this season. Anna seems ready to let him go, which will probably strain his longest friendship: Arkady’s. Hetty’s back, and he was trying to take up for the team in her stead, but now he knows they’re “safe” with her there -- at least their jobs are. Mosley seems to have cooled off on her mission to split them. (I’m going to get back to that, and I’ll put it in a separate post -- as I’ve just decided*). Alex seems to have pulled away, and taken Jake with her. His dad’s where he can’t save him. Sam’s dealing okay, and he seems to be keeping G at a distance, so he probably feels he can’t do much to help him despite wanting to. Kensi and Deeks have each other. Eric and Nell have each other. (BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS!!!!) Mosley’s son needs his mother. And everyone else is needed by someone else. He still always seems surprised by how much he means to people, as it’s not something he’s used to with his childhood, so he definitely sees himself as expendable as he used to be before certain relationships.
For practicality’s sake, something that would minimize G’s screentime for a few eps (nothing like Kensi’s when Dani was out), might help get COD an ep early on next season for his directing -- without having to wait until the end of the season like they usually do. It would make scheduling his time across three episodes (location scouting and prep, directing, and editing) easier on him, the writers of the eps, and the crew that has to balance all the disparate schedules. Directing slots are usually done a year in advance, so they would have known in advance when COD would be back in the director’s chair going into S10.
Again, with the consequence theme, something going super duper wrong, unlike with the Vietnam mission, would put the team that’s in hot water in even more hot water -- including Mosley.
Sam potentially losing G? This time of year? After being shot and probably wanting to double-down on his commitment to his children? THE DRAMA! THE ANGST!
Things going wrong with other team members following some difficult conversations and uncertainty about things? Probably another reason to delay the Densi wedding even more.
So, yes, that sums up (ha!) my different theories. In response to the * things from above, I’m going to write a separate post about Mosley/Joelle. I was going to include it in this one, but you’ve all suffered enough.

Hey there! Sorry to bother you but I saw your post about Spanish names and I saw you mentioning something about getting names from both parents? I guess I know less about how naming works than I thought, can you explain what you mean by that?
I’m admittedly procrastinating job apps super hard right now so this definitely got longer than it was supposed to. This is all based off memory and general knowledge, so it’s always best to Google or ask other Latinx people if you’re wondering what someone’s name means or if you’re creating a name for an original character (especially that last one because, lord, writers need to get better about learning how Spanish names work).
First Names
Middle Names
Surnames/Last Names
Naming Children
What’s the deal with de, de la, and y?
How long is too long?
So, as you know, Spain colonized the fuck out of the Americas and brought their culture with them. As a result, many Latin American countries preserved the naming conventions that were used in Spain and, to this day, it’s very common to see Latinos (i.e. people from Latin America, not necessarily from Spain) with long Spanish names. The convention itself isn’t too complicated, but it’s helpful to know how it works if you’re going to be coming up with names for any Latino characters you’re writing/conceiving.
First Names
You usually have one or two (sometimes three) of these. So your name might just be Juan. But some people like to give their children several first Christian names so that they are protected by the Saints. So your name could also be Juan Diego Luis, named for St. Juan Diego. Keep in mind Diego and Luis aren’t considered middle names in this example. These are all part of a person’s first/given name.
Now what Juan Diego Luis would be called day-to-day will depend on him. Sometimes people just go by the first name (Juan). Sometimes they’ll cut out the Saint name and go by their non-Christian first name (Luis). Usually when you have a family full of people with the same Saint name, you’ll do the latter. A common thing I see with women in Latino families is that many of them will all have the Saint name Maria (e.g. Maria Mercedes, Maria Fernanda, etc.) These ladies will typically go by their non-Christian first name during the day to day (e.g. Maria Mercedes will probably go by Mercedes and Maria Fernanda will probably go by Fernanda).
Middle Names
This one’s easy – middle names aren’t a thing in Spanish naming conventions. It’s an entirely western concept. That being said, if you’re a Latino living in the US who’s been assimilated in American culture, it’s common that your parents would give you a middle name. I, for example, have a middle name. But remember that, traditionally, they aren’t given.
Surnames/Last Names
This is where it gets fun. Traditionally, you’ll get two surnames, or apellidos. If you’re gonna be super traditional about it, the paternal surname is meant to go first followed by the maternal surname, but lately people have been very free about putting whichever name first that they want, whether it be the maternal name or the paternal name. For the sake of the following examples, let’s assume that the first surname is the paternal one. So if Juan Diego Luis’s full name is Juan Diego Luis Diaz Rodriguez, Diaz would be his father’s surname and Rodriguez would be his mother’s surname.
Another quick note on surnames is that women don’t take on their husband’s names when they get married. So let’s say Juan Diego Luis Diaz Rodriguez gets married to Isabela Muratalla Mercedes. Isabela’s name would not change. She would still be known as Isabela Muratalla Mercedes after she gets married (Muratalla is her paternal surname, and Mercedes is her maternal surname).
Now, Juan Diego Luis Diaz Rodriguez is a mouthful. This is probably what his name would look like on all official documents. But what about what about more informal situations like an attendance list at school? Again, this really depends on the person. As I said above, in regards to first names, it’s common that people either go by their non-Christian names or go by the first part of their given name. In regards to last names, it’s common that people keep both surnames or just stick to one (either the maternal or the paternal). You can also choose to hyphenate and create a compound surname (which I’ll get to in a second).
So Juan Diego Luis Diaz Rodriguez has a few options in terms of what his everyday name could be. He could keep it like this. He could go by Juan Diaz Rodriguez. Luis Diaz Rodriguez. Luis Diaz. Juan Diaz. All depends on personal preference.
Naming Children
BUT WAIT, you ask. If each of your parents have two surnames, which of their surnames do you inherit when you’re born? The answer is usually the paternal names (again, obvious exceptions, but go with me for the sake of the example). So let’s say Juan Diego Luis and Isabela decided to have a kid names Maritza. Maritza would take her father’s paternal name and her mother’s paternal name and be called Maritza Diaz Muratalla.
Father: Juan Diego Luis Diaz RodriguezMother: Isabela Muratalla Mercedes Child: Maritza Diaz Muratalla
Even though I mentioned before that it doesn’t matter whether the maternal or paternal surname comes first, siblings usually retain whatever order the parents decide upon. So all of Maritza’s siblings would be called Diaz Muratalla and not Muratalla Diaz.
Now, here’s where it gets a touch complicated…let’s say for example that Juan Diego Luis Diaz Rodriguez is either really proud of his mother’s family name and doesn’t want to lose it in the next generation, or he wants to distinguish himself from the thousands of Diaz’s in the world. Juan Diego Luis may choose to hyphenate his name into a compound surname and become Juan Diego Luis Diaz-Rodriguez. In this case, Martiza’s name would be Maritza Diaz-Rodrigues Muratalla.
And, to get even more crazy, let’s say Maritza’s mother had the same philosophy and hyphenated her name into Muratalla-Mercedes. Then in that scenario, Martiza’s gonna have a hell of a birth certificate because her full name would be Maritza Diaz-Rodriguez Muratalla-Mercedes.
What’s the deal with de, de la, and y?
So, when you see de or de la in someone’s name, it usually means that one of their surnames is the name of a thing or a place. So de Guardiola for example literally just means “from Guardiola.” de la Peña means “from the Rock.” Usually in those situations they reflect the geographical location of that individual or (most commonly) the geographical location of their ancestors.
If you’re looking at anyone born before the 60s, sometimes you’ll see names like Pedro Garcia Carrión y Maes. The y was basically how people would separate the paternal and maternal surname. This got really useful when you had compound surnames and you needed to tell where the second surname started. Nowadays, you usually just group together the compound surnames with a dash in order to help the differentiation. So, going back to Maritza, before the 60s, her name might have been written Maritza Diaz Rodriguez y Muratalla Mercedes. But today, she’d write it Maritza Diaz-Rodriguez Muratalla-Mercedes.
How long is too long?
Essentially, how long a name is depends on how traditional a family is. Oftentimes the reasons Latinos have really long names is because a) parents like to give their kids a lot of Christian names for protection and b) a parent really wants to conserve the last names of their family and make sure they carry on into the next generation. Long, traditional names are a lot more common for those who are native to Latin American countries. Once you start looking at the names of Latinos who were born in the US or have lived in the US for a few generations, you’re more likely to see names that are a lot shorter since they’re assimilated in American culture. You’ll sometimes see them without a maternal name and you’ll sometimes see them with a middle name. There are obvious exceptions to this, but for the most part, a 3rd generation Mexican kid who’s lived in Chicago his whole life is probably not gonna have a name that’s 7 names long, especially when you consider how much of a bitch that is to navigate when you’re dealing with official US records.
Don’t feel like someone has to have a long ass name to seem more Latino. Especially when you’re creating OC’s, it’s often better to consider their culture, where they grew up, how they grew up, how traditional their parents are, etc. when conceiving their name. Unless there’s a really good reason for their name to be that traditional, simpler is often better.
That’s basically all I can think of for the moment. Again, if you have any questions, it’s always best to Google or ask someone who’s Latinx for advice on naming. But hope this was helpful!
#latino#latinx#spanish names#spanish surnames#reference#Anonymous#ask#oh and high key if any of y'all see mistakes with this hit me up and i'll change it#i am in no way an expert on this stuff

Why India?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4350772673801ab07041e8d3b172cf2f/tumblr_inline_ozyws9HUga1qgrwka_540.jpg)
"Why India?"
"Why didn't you just choose another country with a better Human Development Index?"
"How much is the salary there?"
"Geez, you can easily get that amount of money here without have to work in that country."
These questions and comments are something that I have been continually getting since the very first time I told my friends about my internship in India. Which is quite annoying somehow, because I was the one who was, and is, actually doing the thing. While they, well, all they could do was saying everything to me without even knowing how difficult it was for me to get this opportunity.
I will take you to that journey on another post as I don't want to write too much right now.
Shortly speaking, I got this opportunity, to do an internship abroad, from AIESEC Indonesia and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) Indonesia. After several tests, we finally came into this portal called EXPA, where we could choose and submit our CV into tons of companies all over the world.
But our choice were limited to this specific field (e.g. business, education, marketing, etc.) that we had chosen in the very first time of our enrollment. As for me, who chose educational background, I could only choose India, Japan, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, and Turkey. I could enroll myself to as many companies as I want, as long as the company is located in the alloted countries. I remembered that I enrolled myself to around 80-90 companies.
From those number of companies, only few had given me the chance to go to the next steps, and one of the companies that responded pretty quickly after the interview was Oxford Public School, Morarkhera, India. I was told by the AIESEC Lucknow, the "nearest" local committee of the AIESEC India, that I was accepted as an intern in the school. When we got accepted, it's called a "match".
I have to be honest that India was not my first choice. But the program had these rules of:
1. After you are accepted in one company, you cannot reject it and hoping to get a match from another company.
Actually the EXPA system made it impossible to those who had accepted to get another match, as the other companies we had enrolled to will be automatically "withdrawn" by the system.
2. You have to pay IDR 2.000.000 for the break-match fee with the company.
I was, and still am, poor and I didn't have that amount of money at that time. So I wouldn't be able to break the match.
3. Those who break the match, will be blacklisted from any AIESEC program, FOREVER.
This is the worst of them all. I was joining this event from AIESEC Bandung called Global Village in 2016 and I loved it so much. I didn't want to miss that kind of excitement only for sake of "I should get a better country than this one." No, that wouldn't be happening!
But of course, the reasons were not only those.
I remembered when I told my parents about this. I was saying that the salary was probably not as much as one that I would get had I had gotten a job in some of the Indonesian companies. But I convinced them (although I was pretty sure that even without doing it, they would always support me, no matter what), that despite the salary, I was sure that I would get another great and amazing things while I would be there. Not only the life-changing experience, but also, the opportunity of getting to know people more, to get a better perspective of people. They supported and permitted me to do the internship, just as I expected.
After I got the permission from my folks, I went to visit some of my friends, only to have short conversations and say goodbye. But I didn't yet tell them of the internship. I was just saying that I would be working and it would be quite far. I did this because I was still waiting for my Indian visa to be granted. I finally told my friends about it after I had had the visa. Upon hearing this, most of them were supportive, but some of them were not really. Sorry not sorry.
On the departure day, I finally updated and told about it on Facebook and Instagram. I kept it secret up until the last minute, because I think it was no use if I told my friend that I would do something while the thing was still uncertain. Sounds cliché, but I think it has a deep meaning.
Just as I said earlier, going to India will be giving me a life-changing experience. Not only that I will learn from the school environment in particular, but I will also learn from the Indian people in general. It's not everyday that you get the chance to stay in another country for a year, right?
I want to close this with a word from one of my friends, who happened to choose India as her first choice. She said that "I want to go to India because I want to change people's stereotype of this country. I don't want to know this or that from TV or movie. I want to experience it by myself and I want to prove them wrong. I want them to see that India is a great and beautiful country."

Theme for final presentation!
Week 1:
Within our session today we brainstormed ideas and came to conclusions of what our final presentation palimpsest could be...
Rough Ideas
Control of consciousness
The link between cellular/molecular basis and consciousness is not well understood, so what if in the future we totally understand how it and the brain as a whole works?
Able to change your consciousness: how you perceive pain, your personality, fix brain damage, download skills (similar to that in the Matrix), inhibit emotions, etc
Policing and laws change: brains of geniuses, criminals, upstanding citizens, and disadvantaged people curated into a large collective conscious that dictates right and wrong for the whole of society → could be a utopia or a dystopia
Tattoos
Currently signify life events, affiliations, and personality, so what if in the future that’s how you’re ID? Ie family crests (economic) , status,
Currently: tattoos for the sake of art, not necessarily for meaning but cause it looks siiiiiiick
Moving ink – reflect vitals and other bodily changes
Fake tattoo market – for those who don’t have status, like faking a resume
Tattoos become so ingrained in society that humans are born with some from their parents, showing a visible representation of not only the individuals history but their families as well
Humans look totally different than current humans
Birthmarks? Scars? (killswitch, achilles heel typa thing)
The ‘Red Carpet’
What is the societal power of the red carpet? Whoever walks it is deemed high-class socially.
Re-invent what it means to “walk the red carpet”
What are the values that we apply to it now and what can we use it for in the future?
It is a commodity which instills feelings of wealth, social power, public image, etc.
Why do we care? It is literally a colored rug.
Disease/Germs
An immersive installation including a visual. texturised impression of pollution, disease and germs.
Segregation of talent into different parts of the world
What is your theme? → Tattoos –
Present on the bottom and build up to future [4 levels] →
Currently: taboo stereotype slowly dwindling, but still seen as unprofessional in most job sectors and frowned upon in some cultures (ie East asian cultures) and encouraged in others (ie Maori, polynesian cultures); seen as art and self expression, doesn’t necessarily have to have meaning behind it
Political: white nationalism/Nazis, mafia, LGBTQA+ (ie rainbow), feminists, vegan tattoos
Social: affiliations ie Navy/military, creative spaces and artists, personal development (ie getting a special tattoo every life event), marriage, stick n pokes from friends
Economic: tattoo businesses are growing among other body modifications ie piercings, deliberate career because tattoos are still lw taboo and possible family repercussions ; tattoo removal industry - growing
Cultural: gang tattoos (tear tattoo), stick n pokes and machines, life events depending on ethnic group, religions mostly against tattoos
20 years: more people have tattoos, taboo is pretty much gone except for older generation depending on geographic location,
Political: political vues - where you stand on voting and political issues eg, labour vs conservative are you left or right wing
Social: tattooed makeup (ie eyebrows, eyeliner), UV tattoos are the rage among the youth especially at clubs n art scenes, using ashes of dead loved ones for tattoos, Memento shit
Economic: credits cards on body catching on, special gloves developed to work against misuse of contactless cards
Cultural: sub cultural tattoos, certain tattoos can be identified as a certain sub ethnic group
200 years:
Political: concept of immortality - someone’s brain is downloaded to a dedicated computer in a sort of bank/safe : for example if they were president of a country/company - their consciousness continues making the “most important decisions” for a country/company; (“they live on the forearm of their eldest child” in a way)
Social: tattooed teeth, drip medicine inked into skin that will treat whatever illness and will also let others know what the person has/had, some black mirror shit,
Economic: credit cards, , kid safe ink, sustainability ink - regulated ink eg plant based, ashes of dead loved ones easier tattoo removal
Cultural: passports in chip-implant form
2,000 years:
Political:
Social: projection tattoos, part cyborg (moving ink); remembering memories by projecting them onto the wall, physical phones will be eradicated ; makeup is permanently tattoed (like drag queen style makeup - every element is responsible for different functions) ; the 12h pill - people can cover their family tattoos this way and falsify information - useful for secret agents
Economic: have
Cultural: chip projects from skin - onto opposing wall - e.g. religious people can have the bible on their forearm and project it onto the back of a plane seat to read it for moments of mindfulness.
How will you incorporate social, economic, cultural, and political elements?
What media or mixed media approach?
Transfer tattoos
Holograms for projected tattoos
Using actors to represent the time-changes: now, 20, 200, 2000
Assign roles and create a schedule
(1) sketching (Annalise, Amelia, Ellis, Suryansh, Belle) - speak to technicians (Tiffany + Chloe)
(2) troubleshooting - finding the room - the fine detail (everyone)
(3) making (members broken up by what thing they’re making)
(4) finishing the fine details (everyone)
Post advice thoughts :
Main idea may be identity as a whole
Tattoos beyond ornamental —what other purpose for tattoos? Superpower like?
Levels don’t have to flow into each other — can think about the conflicts that could arise
Idea: what are we without identity? Could you strip someone of their identity? Besides financial fraud currently, how in the future could you have your ID stolen or changed?
Shifting IDs based on environment/people
In essence for next week I will be illustrating identity ideas :
20 years - basic moving ink showing stats and persons profile
200 years Each human has a barcode or symbol tattooed on their palms - similar to a dog chip which can display all their basic information when scanned in a projection
2000 years - moving ink that displays information like a phone or tablet screen including passport ids bank account - we are ourselves machines need no form of exterior technologies

Gigantic & PAX West Decompression (9/6)
Been a while since I posted about games, but August was a rather weird month for me. Aside from making and releasing my first game, friends came up to visit, job-hunted, and questioned my career choices. Standard stuff.
To start off with, last weekend I attended PAX West in what was my 2nd full convention, 2.5 overall (interesting story that involves a Portal sweater, Chipotle, and testing the bonds of friendship). PAX was a truly amazing experience that further cemented my drive to be in the video game industry, no matter the capacity. My problem has been where exactly that niche is. At 24 years old, I’ve got a bit of a late start compared to other people. But, as I have told myself and other people have told me, it’s wrong to think of the past few years as a waste. Without them, without the struggles I endured, I wouldn’t be in a position now where it truly feels like I’m following my passion.
It does get hard sometimes. Despite my best efforts, comparison will always seep through, and with them regrets. Regret that I didn’t follow this sooner. Regret that I didn’t study compsci. Regret that I haven’t been more consistent with my creative endeavors. But regrets look only at the past, and while the past has been important to shape who I am today, my focus needs to be directed forward.
Video games have always been a part of my life and will continue to be important to me. Seeing that same dedication and passion at PAX West was truly eye-opening. Getting to meet the developers to Children of Zodiarcs, discovering that the LucasArts crew is back and better than ever, and simply being in an environment where games are celebrated: well, it was better than I could’ve imagined.
So until the day I find myself a part of the industry that creates these fantastic titles, I’ll be happy simply adoring them from a distance.
At least that distance has shrunk, right?
Due to a mix of different factors, I haven’t played many video games lately. Gigantic is one of the few that I have consistently made time for. I’ve been a fan of the game since it was first announced back in 2014 and tried to play the closed beta (my computer was potatoes at the time). With the game’s full release, it’s at an extremely polished state in terms of aesthetics and design. Unfortunately, with the rise of hero shooters like Overwatch, Paladins, and Battleborn, it’s gotten a bit lost in the shuffle. It’s a shame, because Gigantic is very clearly a labor of love made all the more impressive that the team sits at under 100 developers. Having met the developers at PAX West and confirmed that they are indeed passionate creators, I want this game to succeed even more. It’s not without its rough edges but overall it’s a fantastic experience.
Story
The world of Gigantic is rather vague and a simple Light (House Aurion) vs. Dark (House Devaedra). Five heroes fight for a giant glowing gryphon against another set of five heroes fighting for a giant glowing snakedragon thing. Battles take place across three different locations (desert industry, overgrown and waterlogged ruins, shipwrecked glacier) where ultimately the focus is the gameplay, not the story.
That said, there are still quite a few story elements to be found that aren’t tied to the core gameplay. Gigantic divvies up its lore and backstory in the skins for the heroes and their weapons, doling out bits of information through small sentences that, much like Dark Souls, gives a very small window into a very wide world. Currently, it’s a mish-mash of interesting lore, so hopefully Motiga will take the effort to tie these threads together somehow later down the line.
Mechanics
Back in the beta, the game handled rather floatily. Floaty? Floatingly? Yes. At any rate, whatever has been done since then has smoothed everything out immensely. What Overwatch did for FPSes, Gigantic did for OTS 3rd person. This is thank is no small part to the gorgeous animation on Motiga’s part, where moving in three dimensional space feels like a watercolor in motion. Every motion flows beautifully from one to the next and all the abilities flow and cancel into each other very smoothly.
My one gripe is with the stamina system which, balance-wise, I understand, but it still takes some getting used to. The in/out of combat system isn’t entirely intuitive, at least off the bat. The more games I’ve played the less attention I’ve had to actively pay to the indicator at the bottom of my screen that lets me know as I’m about to exit combat.
At first, it was easy to get lost in the effects and numbers piling up but I’ll attribute that more to getting used to the format of the game rather than any design flaw on the developers’ part. As each game passed and I became increasingly familiar with each Hero’s abilities and the corresponding particle effects, it became easier to parse out what was happening where and why. The combat can best be described as controlled chaos, but that’s pretty standard fare for hero-based games. And that’s a large part of why I love them.
On the macro scale of things, matches take place across roughly symmetrical arenas that, similar to Heroes of the Storm, has objectives laid out that generate resources for the team that has captured them. Fighting, if both teams are doing the right thing, will largely take place around these objectives. What I particularly love about Gigantic’s gameplay is that the objectives are active rather than passive, in the sense that gameplay is more than just about standing in and around the objective. The players can actively manipulate what sort of defenses the objective will have and it does factor into how the flow of a fight will pan out. The macro affects the micro in more ways than one and it’s been a delight to sort out the method in the madness.
Aesthetic
Gigantic is flat out gorgeous. The bold, striking colors and shapes all blend together in three dimensional space to create a vibrant world that is pure visual bliss to move through. It takes a page out of TF2 and, where Overwatch went a step towards realism, Gigantic takes a step towards style. Shapes and features are exaggerated, but form still does follow function. That’s a critical component missing from a lot of other games, e.g. Battleborn, Atlas Reactor, Borderlands, where the stylized visual aspects are incredibly pronounced but at times it feels like they’re colorful for the sake of being colorful. In a panel presented by the Motiga devs at PAX, they talked about the importance of shapes, silhouettes, and form/function dictating a character’s geometry.
Another huge point in the game’s favor is the decision to go for a more storybook feel, in that the characters feel very heavily cartoony and stylized while belonging to established Western fairy tale archetypes. It fits the world of Gigantic quite well. It threads a fine line between stark danger and playful whismy, whirling together into a blend of storybook fantasy that feels almost nostalgic.
Technology
Gigantic was built in Unreal 3, which explains the impressive effects that the game produces. Complex geometry is formed real-time and lighting and shading are cast on large, packed scenes. I don’t know too much about Unreal or what it’s capable of, but especially since beta whatever Motiga has done to smooth things out it shows.
Note: Posting this 10 days after I initially started writing, but chalk that up to an incredibly debilitating fever and a slightly bloody concussion. Better late than never, as it goes.

Can DFIs Be First Responders in a Crisis?
Register at https://mignation.com The Only Social Network for Migrants. #Immigration, #Migration, #Mignation ---
New Post has been published on http://khalilhumam.com/can-dfis-be-first-responders-in-a-crisis/
Can DFIs Be First Responders in a Crisis?
You might find this question—can DFIs be first responders—odd. After all, since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the development finance institutions (DFIs), which include the private finance arms of the multilateral development banks (MDBs) and the bilateral development banks, have been busy announcing financial goals for crisis response, and offering reassurances of proactive stances. But it is important to recall at this moment that their financial models are not well suited for the purpose of crisis response. In this blog we explore their challenges and suggest how they can stretch and deploy their capital effectively at this moment of global crisis.
Development finance institutions and crises
It is during crises that the logical tensions of the DFI model are most exposed. We expect DFIs to offer finance on terms not available from the private sector. This is how we can tell they are “additional.” At the same time, we want DFI credit decisions and finance terms to be “commercial” or “market-based.” But right now we expect DFIs to lend countercyclically and at scale into a global recession and pandemic—that is, they are being asked to significantly boost lending at a moment of maximum risk and uncertainty. In short, we are asking them to take outsize risks while avoiding effects on balance sheets and ratings. Shareholders have long been unclear about how they want these institutions to approach trade-offs. This ambiguity is awkward in normal times, but it is highly costly in a crisis when basic questions need to be answered quickly. Some of the key questions facing DFIs are:
Should DFIs be among the first responders or hold most of their financial firepower for the recovery stage?
Should shareholders allocate more public resources for blended finance, or for lending to embattled governments? Do DFIs need more capital to respond to the crisis or do they need to stretch their existing capital?
Should DFIs continue to concentrate on middle-income countries (MICs) where private capital markets are more developed and most of their clients are, or should they double down on efforts to ramp up in low-income countries (LICs) where financing constraints are most binding?
Should the DFI role be to restart capital flows generally, e.g., trade finance, or target where the finance gaps are greatest, such as long-term financing for infrastructure, finance that reaches the poor and vulnerable, or launching new local financial markets and products?
When the need is so great, the temptation is to answer all these “either/or” questions by saying, “let’s do both.” But DFIs cannot be all things to all stakeholders, especially in a world of shrinking public revenues and exploding public spending needs.
The good news on capital
Partly because of recent MDB capital increases, but also very conservative capital adequacy strategies, multilateral DFIs are in a better position now than they were in the global financial crisis. They hold more equity relative to loans than commercial institutions do. For the DFIs that only or mostly finance the private sector—the EBRD, the IFC, and IDB Invest—equity/loan ratios are two to six times higher than their commercial counterparts. The message from shareholders to these institutions should be: The rainy day has arrived, and it is time deploy the financial space available. For those banks that combine their sovereign and private operations on the same balance sheet—EBRD, AfDB, AsDB—equity in these ratios includes only paid-in capital and accumulated earnings, not callable capital. Callable capital is a contingent commitment by shareholders to provide the capital if the institution itself is at risk of default, which has never happened, even during the global financial crisis. It accounts for an average of 89 percent of the total capital that shareholders commit to these three institutions. But, as a matter of policy, risk-averse finance departments in these institutions do not include it in calculating prudential lending limits. This unique MDB capital model is efficient. It avoids having shareholder legislatures appropriate money that is extremely unlikely to be needed. Even now, there are no indications that any call for this capital is forthcoming. But its presence as an insurance policy gives these institutions the flexibility and scope for major increases in lending while still maintaining equity/loan ratios above those of their commercial bank counterparts. The message from shareholders to these institutions should be: The rainy day has arrived, and it is time deploy the financial space available.
More targeted capital?
To be fair, if DFIs do in fact lean in a big way into crisis response, they will be managing increased risk from every side: counterparty, credit, currency, macroeconomic, debt default, and political risks. And, as liquidity problems turn into solvency problems, the instrument mix will likely have to include more subordinated and other products that eat up more institutional capital—e.g., equity, quasi-equity, local currency lending. Part of the increased risk can be addressed through loan pricing. But if the DFIs are to be first movers, they will have to bear part of the costs and risks themselves. So if they are doing their job, the case for additional capital for MDBs that do private finance could well emerge over time. Shareholders will have a choice. They could:
Reserve any additional capital only for lending to governments,
Put more capital into the existing risk-averse DFI financial model, or
Create another financial structure to add to the model for the specific purpose of absorbing additional risk and increasing impact.
I advocate the third option—an off-balance sheet vehicle, purpose-built to take on more risk. We have proposed elsewhere the Stretch Fund, which could be accessed by multiple MDBs and even bilateral DFIs. Its characteristics would be quite different from, but complementary to, existing institutions:
Its financial target would be to preserve its capital rather than risk-adjusted market returns. It would not lose money and would not be a grant-making donor.
It would specialize in subordinated products, rather than the senior lending that dominates DFI portfolios.
It would be capitalized by governments and by private philanthropic investors that share a greater risk tolerance for the sake of greater development impact.
Unlike the IDA Private Sector Window, it would operate in both MICs and LICs. And it would not only be a passive project taker from the IFC. It would also have the capacity to be a proactive project originator with a more risk tolerant culture and governance structure and a different financial product skill mix.
Such an innovation to the DFI financial model is needed in normal times for greater development impact and greater mobilization of private finance. In times of crisis and heightened risk, the case only becomes more pressing.
Bringing governments and entrepreneurs together for crisis response
Finally, beyond questions of capital adequacy and allocation, there is a critical crisis role that MDBs can play because they engage and finance both governments and private businesses. That capacity puts them in a strong position to address the one of the most pressing crisis challenges: getting services and income support to the most vulnerable. Especially in LICs and LMICs, public sectors cannot execute the scale of support that is needed to offset income declines. They often have little capacity to reach those in the informal sector and in rural or remote locations. This is a time to use innovative private business models and technologies to cut the costs and improve delivery of services, social transfers, and finance for small businesses and farmers in order to reduce crisis effects on the most vulnerable. MDBs can use their public arms to help governments fund such programs and their private arms to help identify and finance the right private firms and financial institutions as partners. Together they could do much to stretch scarce public resources and reach those who would otherwise be subject to catastrophic income and welfare losses. Bringing the two arms together should also reduce risks to the MDBs themselves by strengthening the performance of their clients—countries, households, businesses, and financial institutions. Mobile payments providers and lenders, microfinance institutions with thousands of clients in informal sectors and rural areas, e-commerce companies, and drone operators can help solve problems of access and reach. Governments could, for example, distribute small grants through mobile payers or microfinance institutions, or pay for forgiveness or rescheduling of existing loans. Or governments could use competitive challenges that offer payments to firms that can deliver critical health and other services to vulnerable or remote populations. The MDBs are unique. No other financial institutions have the array of tools available to them: economic, financial, and sectoral analysis, and cross-country knowledge; budget lending; technical assistance; policy and institutional support; project development funds; public and private project finance; and risk-sharing tools. In this unique crisis, all are needed. MDBs have the opportunity and obligation to mobilize this toolkit to help countries act much more effectively, faster, and with greater scale than they could on their own.

Dunes, A and Bronner, S - Meaning of Folklore : The Analytical Essays of Alan Dundes, 2007
“Here I Sit” also dealt with one of his experiences—going to bathrooms in Berkeley, where his folkloristic antennae picked up an abundance of written lore. He noted that they were much more common in facilities for men, rather than women, raising gender questions about the praxis of writing verses and sayings he called “latrinalia,” to distinguish it from the more general term “graffiti” for any wall markings… Ever since Dundes’s latrinalia essay was originally published, it has been cited as a benchmark interpretation of bathroom graffiti. See Gonos, Mulkern, and Poushinsky 1976; Stocker et al. 1972; Birney 1973; and Longenecker 1977. While the above citations are mostly of men’s facilities, for an exemplary look at a woman’s bathroom as “community,” see Gordon 2003. For other interpretative essays on folklore using Dundes’s scatological theses, see Fleisher 1981; Mechling 1984a and 1984b; Carroll 1987; Klein 1993; and Bronner 2007. – pg 353-4
B Here I Sit: A Study of American Latrinalia
A ny American male who has ever had an occasion to enter a public bathroom such as one found in a railroad or bus terminal has surely observed at one time or another one of the many traditional inscriptions found on the walls of the facilities. 1 In some quarters, e.g. in the rest rooms of some bars and cafés, one finds the custom has been institutionalized in that a small slate and an accompanying piece of chalk are hanging on the wall. This allows individuals to write freely and at the same time it saves the establishment the expense of continually repainting walls. Despite the widespread distribution of these inscriptions and despite the fact that many of them are demonstrably traditional, one looks in vain for extended collections of published texts and for any rational discussion of them or the practice of writing them. Most histories of the water closet (e.g. Pudney, Reynolds, Wright) do little more than recognize that such traditions exist. Typical is the remark made by poet John Pudney, author of The Smallest Room , who bothers to say (1954:130), “I must here resist the temptation urged on me by several men of letters to quote more freely from this poetry of the smallest room.” Certainly there can be no doubt as to the antiquity of the genre. In the chapter devoted to latrines of John G. Bourke’s classic Scatalogic Rites of All Nations , one finds references to the obscene poetry written in Roman latrines (1891:136). What little evidence is available in print does attest to the age and international spread of this popular form of written folklore. – pg 360
The classic study of the form in America was made by Allen Walker Read who privately published it in 1935 under the euphemistic title , Lexical Evidence from Folk Epigraphy in Western North America: AGlossarial Study of the Low Element in the English Vocabulary . The title page of this eighty-three page monograph announced that the circulation was restricted to students of linguistics, folklore, abnormal psychology, and allied branches of the social sciences. Professor Read’s term “folk epigraphy” raises the question of what to call bathroom wall writings. T he term graffiti is too broad in that it includes all kinds of inscriptions and marks placed on walls. Moreover, the walls may be any walls, not just bathroom walls. Professor Read included in his compilation everything he saw on walls during an extensive sight-seeing trip made in the western United States and Canada in the summer of 1928. Much of his material is traditional in form only, but not content. The various homosexual rendezvous requests with listings of dimensions and telephone numbers are clearly the traditional in form and are surely worth studying as indicators of one of the obvious functions of men’s rooms in a culture which forbids homosexual activities. However, the specific content of these assignation attempts is often idiosyncratic. The folklorist is primarily interested in those mural inscriptions which are traditional in both form and content. T hus while he or she may record the hapax logomena or one-time occurrences, he or she is more concerned with those which have multiple-existence, that is, those which are found with almost exactly the same form and wording in many different places. Obviously, a one-time occurrence may become traditional in time, but the vast majority of the nontraditional graffiti are much too localized to diffuse easily. For the traditional inscriptions, I propose the term latrinalia. This is preferable, I think, to the closest thing to a folk term, “shithouse poetry” inasmuch as not all latrinalia is in verse or poetic form. Pg 360-1
As one writer has put it (Reynolds 1943:171–172), “Stereotyped and crude, our lavatory inscriptions are the measure of our social fixations; and that enterprising anthropologist who is said to be collecting photographs of them in all parts of the world should reveal more of the truth than all of the bombastic historians who will so soon be clothing our grotesque society with dignified phrases and political stercorations, representing its present antics as studied movements, to be explained in terms of high principles and rational conduct.” So then let us proceed with our essay in hard core ethnography! – pg 361
One of the few places where dirt may be displayed and discussed in American culture is the bathroom, private and public. Bathrooms, generally speaking, are status symbols and not infrequently houses are measured in part by the number of bathrooms they possess. – pg 362
It is in the public school bathroom (termed boys’ and girls’ “basement” at my secondary school in Pawling, New York, though the rooms were not located in the basement) that important social interactions take place. Boys meet there to discuss the problems of the day while girls similarly go there to gossip. It is in many ways a place of comparative freedom from the normal restraints imposed by the T heses on Feces 363 adult world. The necessity of some sexual exposure no doubt contributes to the bathroom’s role as a place of sanctioned license. It is in public bathrooms, particularly men’s rooms, that one finds latrinalia. T he variety of latrinalia forms includes: (1) advertisements or solicitations, normally of a sexual nature; (2) requests or commands, often concerning the mechanics of defecating or urinating; (3) directions, which consist of false or facetious instructions; (4) commentaries, either by the establishment or by clients; and (5) personal laments or introspective musings. These categories are not hard and fast and they are not necessarily mutually exclusive. A sampling of each of the categories should serve to illustrate the nature of American latrinalia. T he majority of advertisements are probably not traditional in that individuals simply write their own names and telephone numbers. Furthermore, in view of the paucity of published materials, it is difficult to ascertain whether or not a number of items have appeared elsewhere. Typical “want ads,” which may or may not be traditional, include:
1. 2. For a good blow job, call 777 2024 Bill, don’t call, it’s me, Bob.
2. I’m big. 9” long, 3” round, and ready to go. (In another hand) How big is your prick?
In view of the nontraditional content of most latrinalia advertisements, I will proceed to the more common traditional category of requests or commands. The following are usually placed near men’s urinals:
3. Don’t throw cigarette butts in the urinal— It makes them soggy and hard to light.
4. Please do not throw butts in the urinal. Do we piss in your ash trays?
This is strikingly similar in style to the private swimming pool sign which reads:
1. We don’t swim in your toilet Please don’t piss in our pool.
The pool sign reflects, of course, the fact that Americans do in fact urinate in swimming pools (just as American infants urinate in their baths)! A large number of urinal latrinalia specifically ask for care in aiming the stream of urine. Typical examples of this “toilet training” tradition include:
5. We aim to please you aim too please
6. It is our aim to keep this place clean. Your aim will help.
These are often written by the management. A common request urges men to stand close to the urinal to reduce the chances of spillage.
7. Stand up close. The next man might have holes in his shoes.
8. Stand close, the next person may be barefooted.
9. Stand up close. The next fellow may be a Southerner And be barefooted. (Camp Maxey, Paris, Texas, 1945)
10. If your hose is short And your pump is weak You better stand close Or you’ll pee on your feet.
11. Old rams with short horns please stand up close. (Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Washington, circa 1945; cf. Read 1935:20)
An appropriately localized version from New England is as follows:
12. Puritans with short muskets step up to the firing line. (Damiscotta, Maine, circa 1950) Another example of latrinalia which is posted by the management rather than the customers is one found in diners’ restrooms:
13. If you shit here, eat here. We don’t want just the tail end of your business. Occasionally, there are blason populaire latrinalia:
14. Shake well. Texas needs the water.
For the special case when a man urinates into a toilet rather than into a urinal, special instructions may be found:
15. Be like brother Not like Sis Lift the seat When you take a piss. (New York City, 1924)
16. Be like Dad and not like Sis Pull your lid before you piss. (Camp Maxey, Paris, Texas, 1945)
Some commands are concerned with toilet flushing.
17. Flush your toilets for Wichita’s sake. (Hutchinson, Kansas, circa 1958; cf. Read 935:20) 18. Flush twice: L.A. needs water.
19. Flush hard. It’s a long way to the kitchen.
This insult to the chef is a reversal of the conception that man is a dirt-making machine which transforms food into feces. This conception is illustrated by a latrinalia verse in French which was found in Oxford, England, in 1947: “Ici tombent en ruines les merveilles de la cuisine.” In the above text and the following, the “natural” procedure is reversed as feces becomes food.
20. Don’t flush the toilet. The next man might be hungry. (Chicago, 1960)
21. Please flush the toilet. We want the niggers to starve to death. (A Missouri café, 1965)
There is also some instruction designed to keep the toilet seat clean.
22. Here is the place we all must come To do the work that must be done Do it quick and do it neat But please don’t do it on the seat.
23. Boys we all must use this throne Please keep it clean and neat Shit down the hole God damn your soul And not upon the seat. (Camp Maxey, Paris, Texas, 1945)
The reference to “throne” recalls the euphemisms in other cultures which speak of going to the place where the king goes on foot or alone (Pudney 1954:97). A common American fantasy technique designed to minimize one’s awe of a great personage is to imagine that individual at stool.
24. For those in a hurry With no time to sit Please lift the lid For a more direct hit. (Women’s restroom, Berkeley, 1963)
This may refer also to the practice of many women of not actually sitting on a toilet seat but of squatting over it.
One commentary complains about the nature of men’s clothing as opposed to women’s clothing with special reference to defecation.
25. Women women what a blessing You can shit without undressing But we poor men we sons of bitches We must strip or shit in our britches. (Camp Maxey, Paris, Texas, 1945)
The influence of television programs and such contemporary events as demonstrations by civil rights groups (e.g. the Congress of Racial Equality) is evident in some commands.
26. Smile, You’re on Candid Camera.
This is usually written on the inside of the door of the toilet stall.
27. Stay seated. This is a Core shit-in. (University library, Berkeley campus, April, 1964) Some commands or requests are bitter parodies:
28. Support mental health or I’ll kill you.
In the “directions” category, one finds mostly parodies. In the following text, the accuracy of the first line and of the order of the remaining lines was questioned by the informant. It is, however, an excellent example of a latrinalia verse of the “how-to-do-it-yourself” variety. 29. If you want to shit at ease Place your elbows on your knees Place your hands upon your chin Work your asshole out and in. (cf. Read 1935:51, 73)
30. Directions to get to Texas: Go west until you smell shit, that’s Oklahoma. T hen, go south until you step in it—that’s Texas. (Manchester, New Hampshire, circa 1953)
31. In case of atomic attack . . . 1. Put your hands over your ears 2. Put your head between your legs 3. Kiss your ass goodbye. You’ve had it.
32. In case of attack, hide under this urinal. Nobody ever hits it. (Great Lakes, Illinois, 1951)
There are also false directions which are really a form of what folklorists sometimes call a catch. Repeated many times, each time in smaller writing is the line: “If you can read this come closer.” Then at the bottom right below a miniscule version appears the line: “You are now shitting at a 45° angle.” In similar vein is the sign on the ceiling over the urinal which says, “While you’re reading this, you’re peeing on your shoes.” T he content of the latrinalia commentaries varies. Some are unexpectedly intellectual.
33. “God is dead.” Nietzsche “Nietzsche is dead.” God - pg 362-68
By far the best poetry is to be found in the personal laments or introspective musings category. One of the most popular of these is: 54. Here I sit broken hearted Tried to shit and only farted. But think of the man who took the chance Tried to fart and shit his pants.– pg 369
All these latrinalia texts are representative and they should serve to illustrate the nature of this on-going mural tradition. However, these materials raise a number of questions. Probably the most intriguing questions about latrinalia are psychological. Why are they written at all and why in bathrooms? Why are they so much more common in men’s rest rooms than in women’s rest rooms? T here has been little theorizing about the psychological functions of latrinalia. Reynolds (1943:170) has stated that generations of lavatory wall writers simply write for the pleasure of breaking a taboo, presumably the taboo of referring to body elimination activities. Allen Walker Read suggests that latrinalia probably results from many different motivations. Nevertheless, he notes (1935:17) that, “A principal reason is the well-known human yearning to leave a record of one’s presence or one’s existence.” If this is correct, the question remains, what is the psychological significance of a yearning to leave a record of one’s presence? Allen Walker Read has also observed (1935:17) that writing latrinalia was the same order of activity as the carving of initials or names on trees. Interestingly enough, psychoanalyst Ernest Jones tried to explain the latter custom in his famous paper on “Anal-Erotic Character Traits.” Jones hypothesizes (1961:432) that it may possibly be a derived and sublimated form of what he terms a “primitive smearing impulse,” the desire that infants allegedly have to handle and manipulate their feces, a desire whose fulfillment is invariably forbidden by toilet-training conscious parents. People who carve or write their names are leaving a memento of themselves which may injure and spoil something beautiful (1961:432). Although Jones makes no mention of latrinalia, I suggest that it may well stem from the same impulse to smear feces or dirt on walls. Dirty words are dirt by themselves, independent of the dirtiness of their referents. Certainly this theory would explain why the writing was placed on bathroom walls in particular. The fact that much of the content of latrinalia does refer to defecation and urination would tend to support the assertion that there is some relationship between the acts of writing on walls and playing with feces. – pg 387
A more recent localized bit of latrinalia appearing in Berkeley supports the writingfeces equation: 63. Don’t write on our walls We don’t shit in your notebooks. T he Regents What’s found in our notebooks is shit anyway T he Students (Main Library, U.C. Berkeley, 1965) – pg 371
T he desire to make one’s mark or to leave something behind for posterity is also very likely involved in the writing of latrinalia. Defecation as a technique to mark a place for identification is found not only in folk tales (Freud and Oppenheim 1958:38) but among other forms of primate life who apparently demarcate territorial boundaries through urination and defecation (Harrisson). The goal is also perhaps to achieve notice and immortality by producing dirt. – pg 372
Note 1. T his paper was presented at the 1966 meeting of the California Folklore Society at Davis, California. I am indebted to many of my students and colleagues for contributing examples of latrinalia. Unless otherwise indicated, all materials were collected from men’s rooms in Berkeley and the surrounding Bay Area in 1964. I am especially grateful to psychologist Nathan Hurvitz who provided all of the items from Paris, Texas. My thanks also to Sam Hinton for his suggestion that the paper be entitled “Ars(e) Poetica.” Explanations of the meaning of most of the slang terms appearing in the latrinalia may be found in the works by Read and Sagarin cited in the list of references for this paper. – pg 373

Man, something is just off about this dude.
Uh-oh. Eleven Signs You May Have Hired a UX Hack
by Colin Eagan
"What data informed your design decision to wear that scarf?"
Oh, hey client. Look I get it. Being a client is hard. You didn't learn how to prepare for this in client school. You have to make hiring decisions to supplement your team's digital expertise, and it's difficult to know who's good or bad. Even for design roles. Especially for design roles. As opposed to other areas of your business, it's just more difficult to know what you're getting for your money. So you hired this guy (headshot above) on a short-term consulting basis. I mean, I guess he's ok. He's from a big name agency. He seems to understand Millennials, or whatever. But something is just off.
Well, you've heard it said here before that UX (User Experience) is like playing bass guitar: easy to do poorly, and really hard to do well. Here are some signs he may be selling you UX snake oil.
1. He asks you if you "like" the new design direction.
He's so polite! But this is the wrong question. You don't need to like the design. The design needs to further a set of principles that we agree will add value for our users and achieve our business objectives. Liking it has nothing to do with it. Here are some alternative questions that I just this moment pulled out of my butt, any of which would be a significantly better way to phrase this:
BETTER QUESTIONS THAN WHAT THIS GUY ASKED
Do you agree with my prioritization of elements on this page?
Does this design achieve our "mission critical" business and user goals?
Does the design "speak for itself?" Is it intuitive enough to the un-aided user?
Does the design include the appropriate redundancies?
Will this design hold up under our list of failure scenarios?
Does the design meet our established accessibility standards?
How can we make this design better?
But he didn't ask you any of that. This guy really seems to think he's an artist or something. He needs to read Mike Monteiro's Dear Design Student. After all, an artist is just a designer without a job.
After all, an artist is just a designer without a job.
2. He doesn't immediately ask about your customer service team.
I can't believe we have to say this: customer service teams are the best freakin' source of user information! They are the un-sung heroes dealing with your users on a daily basis. They get to hear what everyone hates about your current website, mobile app, web app, etc. And yet they are always taken for granted. This guy didn't bother to ask about them because, a) it didn't even cross his mind, or b) he thinks it's somehow beneath his job as "designer." Ew, call centers. They probably have florescent lights, and crumbs. Design is something to be handed down from on high by a 20-something wearing leather elbow pads.
Ew, call centers. They probably have florescent lights, and crumbs.
3. He gets really defensive about his work.
A good UX person makes his or her money in the design process, not the design delivery. This means working iteratively with the team to scrap what doesn't work and improve, quickly. But this guy is already getting super defensive about this comp he's showing us, and we're only five minutes into this friggin' meeting. UX people should absolutely push back on clients to help make the work better -- that's what we're getting paid for -- but it's a warning sign if every discussion turns into an ego feud. This guy kept telling us at lunch how he only reads real Americana like O'Connor and Faulkner, but I guess he missed the advice to "kill your darlings."
A good UX person makes his or her money in the design process, not the design delivery.
4. He legitimately seems to think that he's designing for someone just like him.
Wait, what? This dude's world-view is somewhat myopic. He keeps talking about how this will look killer on retina devices, but we know from the research that most of our users are older generation who may still use flip phones. (Is that embarrassing to admit?) We could see if this guy's boss has a broader perspective, but he's actually just like this guy, only ten years in the future. Probably too much to ask given that only 3% of creative directors are female, despite the fact that 73% of consumer purchasing decisions are made by women, $20 trillion of the world’s annual spending. I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason for that disparity that we just don't understand because we're not creatives. Humm.
5. He wears a scarf to business meetings that are clearly taking place indoors.
Just throwing this one out there since we're all thinking it. What data informed your design decision to wear that scarf? Yes, it's October, but it's still 80 degrees outside. And furthermore, this conference room is definitely located on the interior of the building. Now, I can much better understand my female co-worker's decision to wear a scarf, as she is legitimately always freezing, since, among all the other shit women still have to deal with in the workplace, air conditioning standards are based on male metabolism. But this guy has no freaking excuse. God, he is just the worst.
This conference room is definitely located on the interior of the building.
6. He tells you his design is good because it is really "clean."
Oh boy here we go. Nope, that's not a thing. The layout may be better with more white-space and fewer words and visuals, but it's not a good design just because you think it looks better. Removing content for the sake of your design aesthetic is a terrible principle.
This guy really needs to review all the research coming out on content density. It confirms what the rest of us have been thinking for years now, that the move toward large-format, poster-style layouts has come at a cost, namely less information delivered to the end-user per second invested. You know this from all those websites that drive you nuts when you have to scroll for thirteen minutes to find half as many words. Oh shit, this guy designed those sites too, didn't he. Well that just figures.
7. He keeps using words like "cultural zeitgeist" or some garbage.
Oh really, this design of yours with three boxes and a stock photo taps into the Millennial cultural zeitgeist? What the actual f*ck, dude. We're designing websites and applications here, not 19th century German philosophical treatises. Who do you think you are anyway, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel? Well do you know the one thing he was bad at? Designing websites. He didn't even have an iPhone. Yes, we understand that any good UX strategy must take into account the larger brand vision and where it fits into culture and the universe. Vision is important. But the reality is the rest of us have to spend the next four to six months actually building this thing. So let's please focus at least a little bit on tangible goals, not impressive sounding phrases.
Who do you think you are anyway, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel?
8. He complains the design would have been better if you had just let him use Photoshop / InVision / etc.
Would it have? You will deliver the design in whichever format the client tells you to deliver the design. Do you have any idea how much shit I've had to design in PowerPoint? While it's convenient to pretend everyone lives in an all-Mac, pixel perfect universe, the reality is 90% of US corporations still run on Windows (48% of them on [gasp] Windows 7!) It is your job as a consultant to ensure that your work can live on once you pass it over to the business team. That's not to say you should let technology limit you. By all means, concept in the tool you're most comfortable with or is most appropriate to the design challenge. But when you get ready to hand it off, it had better be a file the client can, you know, open.
Do you have any idea how much shit I've had to design in PowerPoint?
9. He says "I'm not a writer."
Well, that's decidedly not encouraging. We're not claiming that everyone needs to be a professional copywriter for a living, but designers should be able to write and writers should be able to design, or at the absolute least have a healthy appreciation for it. Even if it's something as basic as writing an email to help clarify a design choice, designers need to be able to write. Please don't say "I'm an art director so I let someone else worry about the content." We live in a content-first world, bro. You need to start taking yourself seriously as a writer. Research, write blog posts, whatever. It will make your designs better. Steve Jobs himself said that the future of design lives at the intersection of liberal arts and technology. Oh, you have his biography on your bedside table? No shit.
We live in a content-first world, bro.
10. He spends more time talking than listening.
He likes to talk, that's for sure. Actually he won't stop talking. But he really hasn't asked you all that many clarifying questions, nor does he really seem to care about your ideas. Granted, he looks in the general direction of your mouth while you're speaking, which is nice, but then he just says what he was going to say anyway. We understand that his time is super-valuable and all, but it would be nice if he at least made a small effort to treat his clients differently than, you know, his Tinder dates.
11. He tells you that you really need to be more like Snapchat, Facebook or Google.
No, you don't. This is not the best use of your time. Your homepage should not just be a single search box because Google does it and everyone loves Google. That small, prolific handful of tech companies is entirely in a separate category. While you should absolutely consider tactical matters related to these sites (e.g. SEO strategy for Google, social strategy for Facebook), and perhaps broader research on the effects these sites have on user expectations overall, it's a sign of design immaturity if someone is lecturing you on how sweet Pinterest is. You're much better served learning from leaders in your industry who have already taken lumps designing for your specific audience.
I'm sure some of those sites are really "clean" as well.
