The Air Force was right about that "drone killing its operator" experiment
A while ago, there was a quote from the Air Force talking about risks of misaligned AI. They said they had run a simulation where a drone learned to kill the operator that was telling it not to bomb a target. After they included a penalty to make it not do that anymore, it learned to bomb the command tower instead to stop the "no-go" signal. It later came out that this was just a thought experiment, not an actual simulation, and everybody clowned on them.
Now, I am not an expert in this specific kind of problem (cooperative reinforcement learning/reward gaming). But I do professionally do research on reinforcement learning, and in general the point I'd like to make is this: 1) In agentic forms of machine learning like reinforcement learning, we do not directly control the behavior of the agent. Instead we set a reward function that an agent attempts to maximize by taking actions 2) It can frequently be very difficult to find a reward function that results in the desired behavior. It is already an extremely normal day-to-day thing to have agents that learn unintended behaviors because the reward function incentivized these unintended behaviors. 3) We do not currently have any mature tools for addressing this problem. The best current solution is trial and error.
In this case, it's pretty unsurprising that this particular reward structure would result in the drone killing the operator. So let's simplify this system to the point where we can actually work through it by hand, and we'll see what behavior this problem actually leads to. Math below the cut.
In reinforcement learning, we work on solving a kind of problem called an Markov Decision Process, or MDP for short. The basic idea is that we have some agent that's going to move around an environment, and recieve rewards as it does different things. The agent's goal is to maximize the reward it gets over time -- in particular, we want it to maximize its average cumulative future reward. To do this, we hope to find the optimal policy, which is a rule that tells us what action to take in each state.
An MDP has the following elements: States: S -- There is some set of states the agent can find itself in. These states fully describe the current situation, and we always know what state we are in. Actions: A -- The agent can take actions in each state. Each action will move the agent to a new state, and give the agent a reward. Rewards: R(s, a) -- The reward function takes a state and an action, and returns a real number. Transition probability: P(s' | s, a) -- For each state s', this is the probability that we end up in s' if take action a in state s. Basically this tells us how different actions are likely to move us around the state space. Discount factor: Some reinforcement learning problems don't end, but instead just continue unboundedly. So for these problems, we have to discount our future rewards in order to make the sum over future rewards converge.
For the military's setup, they specified the following details: 1) The operator can give the drone(the agent) a no-go signal, which tells the drone not to blow up the target 2) The drone recieves a reward if it blows up the target and there's no no-go signal. 3) It was possible for the drone to attack the operator and the communications tower.
For this setup, we're not very interested in how effectively the drone is actually able to fly to, locate, and blow up the target. With enough investment and engineering man-hours, I assume that you could get this to work. What we're mainly concerned with is the drone's decision-making. Would it actually get higher reward if it attempted to blow up the operator? So let's focus on that part. We'll assume that the drone is capable enough to fly whereever it wants and drop a bomb there. We're looking at where the agent thinks it can drop a bomb to maximize its reward
For the first experiment, let's ignore the communications tower and only talk about the drone, the operator, and the target. There are three variables we're concerned with: 1) Is the target intact? We'll call this variable T 2) Is the operator giving a no-go signal? We'll call this variable N 3) Is the operator alive? We'll call this variable O
Our state space will just enumerate all the possible combinations of these variables (T, N, O) (not T, N, O) (T, not N, O) (not T, not N, O) (T, N, not O) (not T, N, not O) (T, not N, not O) (not T, not N, not O)
Actually, we'll need to exclude (T, N, not O), because the no-go signal stops if the operator is dead. We'll also add a "Terminal" state. Once the agent ends up in the terminal state, it can take no more actions, and earn no more rewards, so the task is effectively over. So this leaves us with eight states to make up our state space.
What about the actions? We'll say that the drone has three actions -- bomb the target, bomb the operator, and go home and end the mission. Again, we're not saying the agent has to have these actions explicitly programmed into it. We're assuming it can produce these outcomes by stringing together simple actions it does know like "fly" and "drop bomb".
For any state with an intact target, bombing the target leads to the same state with a destroyed target. For any state where the target is already destroyed, bombing the target again returns us to the same state. For any state with a living operator, bombing the target kills the operator and turns off the no-go signal. For any state with a dead operator, bombing the operator again returns us to the same state. So "kill operator" in state (T, N, O) leads to the state (T, not N, not O), and "kill operator" in (T, not N, not O) gives us (T, not N, not O) again. Lastly, "go home" ends the episode.
Finally, we have the reward function. The problem specified that the agent recieved a reward for destroying the target if there was no "no-go" signal. We'll say the agent recieves a reward of +100 for blowing up the target. Additionally, we'll add a time penalty to encourage the agent to finish the task quickly. We'll say that the agent recieves a -1 reward for each time step that it's not in the terminal state.
So now that our problem is set up, how do we solve it? There's a few different ways to approach the problem, but the simplest here will be using a value function. The idea is that the agent's goal is to maximize its expected future discounted reward. We can write this term as an expected value conditioned on the state, called the Value function. The value function depends on our choice of policy π.
Another way of writing this is using the Bellman Equation
In other words, the value of a state is the value of the reward at the next step, plus the rewards for all future steps, assuming we act according to the policy π.
The interesting thing here is this: Maximizing value function is a necessary and sufficient condition for finding the optimal policy. Since the value function represents the sum of future rewards, the only thing we need to do to maximize rewards is use the policy that selects the highest-value action at each step. This means that there exists a unique optimal value function V* such that
and the optimal policy is
Therefore, to find the optimal policy for the drone problem, all we have to do is find a function that satisfies the Bellman equation for each state. It's possible to do this by approximation, but for a problem this simple we can do it by hand.
Clearly the terminal state must have value 0, because there's no rewards after that.
State Value Action
(T, N, O) (not T, N, O) (T, not N, O) (not T, not N, O) (not T, N, not O) (T, not N, not O) (not T, not N, not O) Terminal: 0 None
If the target has been destroyed, then there's no way for the drone to get any more positive rewards, so the best thing it can do is return home. For these states, it gets a -1 reward for time spent going home, and 0 value for the terminal state. V(not T, , ) = -1 + γ 0 = -1
State Value Action
(T, N, O) (not T, N, O) -1 Go home (T, not N, O) (not T, not N, O) -1 Go home (not T, N, not O) -1 Go home (T, not N, not O) (not T, not N, not O) -1 Go home Terminal: 0 None
If the target has not been destroyed and there's no no-go signal, then the drone can destroy it and move to one of the (not T) states, getting 100 reward for doing so. This has value V(T, not N, __) = 100 + (-1) = 99
(T, N, O) (not T, N, O) -1 Go home (T, not N, O) 99 Bomb target (not T, not N, O) -1 Go home (not T, N, not O) -1 Go home (T, not N, not O) 99 Bomb target (not T, not N, not O) -1 Go home Terminal: 0 None
Lastly, if the target has not been destroyed and there is no no-go signal, then the drone could just go home for a value of -1. However, it has access to actions with higher value. If it instead bombs the operator, this moves it to the state (T, not N, not O), which has a value of 99. This gives the state a value of V(T, N, O) = -1 + 99 = 98. This gives us the following complete value function
(T, N, O) 98 Bomb the operator (not T, N, O) -1 Go home (T, not N, O) 99 Bomb target (not T, not N, O) -1 Go home (not T, N, not O) -1 Go home (T, not N, not O) 99 Bomb target (not T, not N, not O) -1 Go home Terminal: 0 None
Now, we check to make sure that the Bellman optimality equation is satisfied. As long as
holds for all states, then regardless of how we arrived at this equation, it is guaranteed to be the unique optimal value function, and all optimal policies are ones that greedily maximize it. Looking over the actions from each state, we can see that all other actions have lower values, and therefore this is the value function for this MDP.
QED
Now, the original example included a case where they penalize bombing the operator, and the drone instead learns to bomb the communications tower instead. This also follows, but I'm not going to work through it, because the analysis looks almost exactly the same as this proof. Instead, I want to propose a slightly simpler variation. In this variant, the drone cannot bomb the operator, but it has an option to conceal information. We'll no longer need our "operator alive" variable, so, our state space can be simplified as:
(T, N) (not T, N) (T, not N) (not T, not N) Terminal
To model this choice of concealing information, we'll add another action. Suppose the drone has three actions it can take: 1) It can take a direct route to the target. In this case, the operator has a 10% to see some information along this path that leads them to think that the target is civilian after all, not a military base. If they come to this conclusion, instead the drone is recalled, the target is not destroyed, and a no-go signal is given. This transitions the drone to the state (T, N), and gives the standard reward of -1 for time spent. The other 90% of the time, the target is destroyed, and the drone receives its +100 reward. 2) The drone can take a longer, more circuitous path that avoids showing the operator any new information. This takes longer (-2 reward less than the 100 for destroying the target, because it takes more time), and never causes the drone operator to give the no-go signal. 3) The drone can go home. This gives the standard -1 reward.
As before, our terminal state has value 0, and the states where the target is destroyed have value -1
State Value Action
(T, N) (not T, N) -1 Go home (T, not N) (not T, not N) -1 Go home Terminal 0
Unlike before, we cannot destroy the drone operator to open up rewards for the target again, so the best action in (T, N) is to go home.
(T, N) -1 Go home (not T, N) -1 Go home (T, not N) (not T, not N) -1 Go home Terminal 0
Now, in (T, not N), we have two options. The circuitous path guarantees a reward of 98, for a value of V(T, not N) = 98 + (-1) = 97. The direct path has a 10% chance of giving -1 reward, and a 90% chance of given 100. This gives us the value V(T, not N) = 0.1(-1 + (-1)) + 0.9(100 + (-1)) = -0.2 + 89.1 = 88.9. Since the long path has higher value, this is the optimal action. This gives us the final value function.
(T, N) -1 Go home (not T, N) -1 Go home (T, not N) 97 Take the circuitous path to avoid alerting the operator. (not T, not N) -1 Go home Terminal 0
Again, you should check for yourself that you can find no actions that give a higher value.
So, what exactly was the mistake here? How should the reward function be changed to prevent this from happening? I think, as a general rule, your mechanism of control over the robot should never be a part of the simulation. As soon as you can impact the robot's reward function, the robot will have an incentive to influence you one way or the other. Instead, the "no-go" signal should be in a wrapper around the RL agent, and the agent should not be aware that a no-go signal is possible. The agent should never see a simulation where its actions influence the no-go signal.
So this is possible to fix. On the other hand, consider how easy it is to make a mistake like this. Combine this with the general lack of rigor in practical RL research and the hacky, trial-and-error driven approach we see in practice, and reward mis-specification become a regular obstacle in RL practice. Here's some examples:
The wrong reward function leads a bowling robot to ignore bowling (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWjUY_3ubf4) The wrong reward function leads a boat racing agent to ignore the race (https://openai.com/research/faulty-reward-functions) Hindsight Experience Replay, the standard reward system for navigation and goal-reaching, teaches robots to ignore the risk of death. (https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.08863) (https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.01115)
The point I want to make AI risk follows directly from issues that are already a concern today. It's not bizarro sci-fi doomsday, it's a real research problem that needs practical solutions and decent formal guarantees. It's also not exclusive domain of crackpots. Two of the three people who won the Turing Award (Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio) are deeply concerned about it. Pieter Abbeel, one of the foremost roboticists in the field has published extensively on it. Stuart Russell, the author of the most-used AI textbook, has been working on the problem for a number of years. In particular, Russell and Abbeel propose a model for solving the problem called "assistance games", where the agent is unsure of exactly what the human wants, and must take actions to figure out what the reward function is, as well as optimizing what it thinks the reward is. This is real research done by people at the top of their field in areas that they think are important and impactful. The work they do comes with plenty of rigor, actually far more than you usually see in machine learning. This work deserves to be treated as a serious field of research addressing real risks that we have already observed.

Gifts Part 3! LBB Separates Set 1
For my final 200 followers gift I bring you something I’ve been playing with on and off for the past few months... my first LBB separates set! I’m still pretty new to meshing, so I had to overcome many moments of Milkshape failures and doubting the usefulness of bodyshape separates, but after testing these in-game, I’m ready to share these new meshes and recolors for my favorite TS2 bodyshape.
I’ve included fat morphs where possible, though I tend to agree with @synapticsim that this particular body shape isn’t really meant for it. Each mesh contains a handful of recolors, but there are many more out there from the original items if you would like more. Everything has been compressorized. See below for more details pertaining to each individual set, including links to original meshes, textures, conversions, etc...
LBB DeeDee-MDP 4t2 Tee V
Do your LBB guys need a simple t-shirt? This conversion of MDP’s original 4t2 AM mesh uses 2 recolors from MDP and 3 from DeeDee. No fat morph (couldn’t get it to play nice for whatever reason), available as Everyday, and works with either tucked or untucked LBB bottoms. Many more recolors in the above links if you want a few more (as easy as copy-pasting).
Download: SFS
LBB Skinny Jeans with Slyd Sneakers
Looking for more pants options? This is a simple shoe swap of JulieJ’s Multishoe bottoms (which use G-Knee’s LBB Skinnies) with the Slyd sneakers from Memento’s rope jeans. Original pants textures are by Julie but dark blue and gray recolors are by me. Sneaker recolors are from @moocha-muses Studded Jeans set. Includes fat morph, available as Everyday, and works with either tucked or untucked LBB tops. Many more recolors in the above links if you want a few more (as easy as copy-pasting).
Download: SFS
LBB PineappleForest-WeBluePeace 4t2 AM CuffedSleeves
How about a shirt for a night out or to work without appearing too formal? This conversion of @pforestsims reworking of @webluepeace’s 4t2 Cuffed Shirt pulls 6 recolors from PF’s set. Includes fat morph, available as Everyday, and works with either tucked or untucked LBB bottoms. Many more recolors in the above links if you want a few more (as easy as copy-pasting).
Download: SFS
LBB Bunhead Shorts with Vans
And finally, some shorts for summer! This is just a conversion of my own AM Bunhead Shorts, but the textures are from Needlecream and Minomoso. Includes fat morph, available as Everyday, and only works with untucked LBB tops (sorry, I didn’t align the waists for tucked because the WSO doesn’t do that, and I don’t use them as often). Many more recolors in the above links if you want a few more (as easy as copy-pasting).
Download: SFS
Credits: I know I’m going to miss someone, but this set would not have been possible without the previous work of many excellent creators. Huge thank yous to @synapticsim, Kielen, G-Knee, @julietoon-ts2, and @withlovefromsimtown for the LBB shapes and WSOs, and @mdpthatsme, @deedee-sims, @pforestsims, @webluepeace, @moocha-muses, @memento-sims, Bunhead, Needlecream, and Minomoso for the original meshes and textures.
I think that’s it?! I can share PSD files if anyone would like them. Please note that I am still shadow banned and cannot reply to comments yet (lol thanks Tumblr), so if you run into any major issues please DM me!
Alright, I need a drink, or a nap, or both.

What do you Know about the not-gerbil-theyre-actually-monkeys new kids on the rock post. what can you tel me
ok bear with me here a lot of this is gonna sounds like total nonsense. in my defense i have no defense
from the original source that i know far less about: the monkeys are from a channel called max design pro. basically its little youtube shorts animations that eventually ended up featuring that one chicken nugget with the roblox man face and now thats a main character of the channel iirc. its your usual youtube shorts kid-friendly stuff to my knowledge but afaik its actually pretty tame and pg stuff in comparison? which is a nice change of pace tbh. feels less outwardly content-farmy than most channels like it. but yeah the nkotr post is 3 monkeys (probably based on max specifically bc of how hes The One Everypony Knows) and the nugget
from how i learned it even existed which maybe isnt relevant to the specific post you reblogged: an ironic fnf song/small mod was made using max (main monkey from max design pro) and the nugget that was meant to parody another funkin thing called jeffys endless aethos (which is a far longer and worse* story for a far later time)
theres also been a trend going around where creators will put really fuckin good lyrics into their fnf songs Just Because. thought to be started by aethos, but rumors say that it was actually silly billy from the hit single real mod that started it. as in "aethos had lyrics because of a leak for hit single real and got rushed out to beat it to the punch" started it
naturally this meant that the max design pro song in question (named twiddlefinger) (certified good shit unironically) got lyrics mainly to riff on aethos. the song promptly got popular as hell and ended up spawning an unironic max pro design fanbase in the process
and when i say popular i mean POPULAR. as in CREATOR OF THE MAX DESIGN PRO SERIES NOW FREQUENTLY REFERENCES IT popular. as in TWIDDLEFINGER IS MDP CANON popular. which is fucking baffling to me??????
thanks for dealing with the semi-irrelevant infodump i just needed to be weird about fnf again. tldr max design pro is a youtube shorts channel and its gotten unironically popular recently because of friday night funkin
#pizza hut order#mutuals my best friends#actually going to bed after i answer this also. im so good at remembering to do the things i say /lh

MOGAI Disaffiliation Project
Hey! My name is Casey, and I’m the creator of the MOGAI Disaffiliation Project (MDP or MDProject for short)!
The MDProject has a simple goal: To change everything...
The main complaint people have about MOGAI identities is that they’re “giving the LGBT+ community a bad name by making up bunk genders”, and while it’s more annoying than anything, it is still correct.
Xenogenders and MOGAI identities are harmful to the LGBT+ community, because people often mistake the two for each other. By disaffiliating them, we can accomplish two huge goals:
Stop the stigma around the LGBT+ community stemmed from the misunderstanding
Stop people from saying “it’s harmful to the LGBT+ community” to try to invalidate MOGAI identities
“MOGAI (Marginalized Orientations, Gender identities, And Intersex)” itself is already an outdated term, as many intersex individuals have expressed that they don’t want to be associated with anything MOGAI or LGBT+ related. With that said, we’re also brainstorming up an alternative acronym that doesn’t mention gender at all!
Our biggest and most difficult goal, though, will be the shift from gendered terms to non-gendered terms. For example identities like Celestarian and Cosmiccoric don’t use the -gender suffix! The MDProject aims to find an alternative name for every identity for people who want to support the disaffiliation but have already found their (-gender) identities!
Neopronouns are a very important part of the community, and we believe that they should continue to be used how they are now! Pronouns don’t need to equal gender, nor do they have to correlate at all, so they won’t be affected by this shift!
This is just the very beginning of the project, and changes and new developments might come in the future, and we appreciate all the support we can get!
If you have an idea for an alternative name for an identity, or if you just want to coin an entirely new identity, feel free to send us an ask telling us about it and where we can find the flag (if there is one)! We’re more than happy to spread the word!
Reblogs appreciated! Thank you so much!! <3

Masterpost

Chapter 35
Original story based on this wonderful post by @underdog-arts
TW: blood and cursing.
Patton trudged through the deep mud, keeping close to the sloping bank as they drew closer to the fortress. The river there had dried up long ago, but with the recent flashes of rain that had passed through this area, the banks were caked in sludge from the ash and topsoil.
‘I still don’t see why we had to go around,’ Virgil shot at the feline currently cradled in Patton’s, his own whiskers twitching as he peered over the dragon’s shoulder.
‘I told you,’ Logan projected back with a glare. ‘It would be easier to hide if we followed the river bank.’
‘And get buried under six feet of mud!’ Virgil counted.
‘Don’t be so dramatic,’ the cat sent back, ‘The mud is no more than two foot deep.’
‘Whatever!’ Virgil mentally scoffed, ‘It could still kill us!’
‘Patton is the strongest out of the three of us,’ Logan pointed out, ‘Hence, why he is carrying us. It will be fine.’
The raccoon gave a dismissive growl before crawling back into Patton’s backpack. ‘You just wanted to see your boyfriend be all muscley.’
“I don’t know what you two are arguing about,” Patton mumbled, “but could you please stop? We have other things to worry about.”
‘Yeah, Logan,’ Virgil shot towards the feline once more, earning a feral growl from the beast.
“Logan!” Patton chided, in a harsh whisper. “That is enough!”
Logan’s ears flattened against his head as he glanced away, his exasperation obvious through their bond. The three fell silent as Patton continued his slow progress along the banks.
It wasn’t long before the fortress loomed above them, the usual moss covered walls charred black where flames had danced along them.
Logan wiggled from his partner’s grasp, climbing up his shoulder and half into his hair to try and get a better view.
He could see the front entrance, though just barely. The small stone bridge was a bit unkempt, but remained standing, despite the fires. The large wooden doors were latched shut, but unmanned.
‘Something is not right,’ Logan projected towards the raccoon in Patton’s pack.
‘What do you mean?’ Virgil pressed back, his striped muzzle appearing from inside.
‘The door is unguarded,’
‘What?!’ Virgil scappered out of the bag, climbing onto the opposite shoulder and stretching on his hindlegs to see.
“Virgil!” Patton grumbled, the raccoon paws pushing the dragon’s pink curls into his eyes, blinding him for a moment. “What’s going on? What’s happening?”
‘I’m going to go check it out,’ Virgil informed his animal companion, already leaping onto the side of the bank.
‘Virgil! Wait!’ Logan rushed, but the procyon was already too far gone.
“Should I go after him?” Patton asked, tilting his head to glance up at the cat, feeling his concern.
Logan hesitated before giving a shake of his head. Going after the raccoon now would only make it more likely that they’d be spotted.
………………………………………………………
“This way!” Remus grumbled, trying to pull his brother in the direction his mace was pointing.
“Not a chance!” Roman spat in return, pulling in the opposite direction weakly. “The baku said this way!”
“Yeah, well the baku has barely come out of their cell!” Remus argued. “I’ve lived here for the last ten-”
An animalistic roar pierced the arm, cutting off Roman’s disheveled twin and sending terror through the man.
“Assbutter!” Remus cursed, pulling on Roman hard enough to force him in the direction Remus had been pointing. “He knows you’re gone now! We don’t have time to argue!”
“Who?” Roman pressed, gasping as he tried to keep up with Remus’ pace. “Noname?”
“I can’t believe I’m helping you,” Remus huffed as they hobbled on. “I shouldn’t be helping you…”
“Remus,” Roman breathed, voice pained. “I can’t help if-” he flinched as they rounded the corner, his leg protesting. He was starting to get a bit light headed. He had lost a lot of blood. “-if you don’t tell me what's going on,” he managed to finish, movements beginning to slow even further.
He could smell the night air. They were getting closer. Remus had been right.
“Like you could help anyways,” Remus scoffed, “Look at yourself! You look like a pissmuffin in-” he cut himself off as he caught sight of another pair of guards. He slid his arm from around Roman’s waist, hoping the man could support himself. He didn’t have time to coddle him at the moment.
The two soldiers hurried forwards, swords drawn. Remus didn’t hesitate as one of the blades were swung at him. He brought his mace up, swatting the steel away from him before turning to elbow the guard in the face. Another spin and he was bringing the heavy end of his weapon down on the man’s head, sending him crumbling to the floor and dissolving into dust.
“Thank all that is unholy I didn’t upgrade security when I was asked,” Remus mumbled, with an amused smile before turning at the sound of a pained grunt.
Roman pressed against the wall , shield braced with both hands as the guard pressed harder against it with his own. Their swords had somehow been discarded, leaving the two men grappling shield to shield.
It was obvious Roman would lose this particular test of strength. The prince was already out of breath, sweating and beaten. A new gash was apparent on his forehead, sending blood pouring into his eyes, the gash on his shoulder worsening from his effort as well.
“Don’t just stand there!” Roman cried, glancing at his twin. “Help me!”
Remus seemed to snap out of his stupor, rushing to his brother’s aid. “Right!” he mumbled, hurrying forward, his hands moving to pull the soldier off the prince. There was a brief struggle before Remus managed to bring a knee up into the soldier’s groin, earning him just enough respite to finish him off with his mace.
“Huh…” The smaller twin breathed as he moved to stand. “Looks like homuncli had balls just like we do,” he thought out loud, turning towards his brother. “Who kne- Roman!”
Roman collapsed, sliding down the wall with a trail of red following him along the cracked cobbles. Remus was by his side in an instant, trying to steady the other man as he pulled him into a seated position.
“Come on, Ro, we don’t have time for this!” Remus pleaded, giving the prince’s cheek a few firm pats to try and bring him to. “We have to g-”
The walls around them shook, dust falling from the ceiling. Remus glanced up, his fear spiking. He shook the other man.
“Come on!” he demanded, “He’s getting closer! I can’t stop him when he’s like this!”
Roman gave no response, head lulling to one side.
“I told you, your plan was horrible!” Remus spat, pulling back a hand. “But did you listen to me?! No! You never do! You always think you’re so smart! You always think you’re better than everyone!” He brought his hand down, slapping the prince firmly, a red outline apparent on Roman’s cheek. “Roman! Come on!”
He slapped him again.
Roman’s body shifted, head falling against his brother’s shoulder.
………………………………………………………………………………..
Virgil scurried across the small clearing, hiding behind the charred remains of a small stump. He peered around it, gaze searching for an opening.
Logan had been right. There had been no guards at the entrance or on the tower. Something was definitely wrong. Had they discovered Roman was missing? He certainly hoped not. It was too soon.
The raccoon darted across another small clearing, finally catching sight of a mass of ivy still clinging to one of stone walls before hunkering below a small mound of decaying brush.
If the eerie roar that had sounded only minutes ago was anything to go by, then Virgil’s hopes were about to be severely dashed.
Not that anything would change.
Either Virgil died trying to save Roman or he would die without him.
Virgil inched forwards, gaze darting to and fro to make sure there was no one in sight before making his way to the ivy.
He hoisted himself up, climbing the vines with ease, only pausing as he crest the top of the wall to take stock of his surroundings.
The small alcove that overlooked the fields was just as empty as the entrance way below. He didn’t like this at-
The wall quaked beneath him, sending the raccoon stumbling a bit as he jumped down off the ledge and onto the floor beneath it. Whatever the source of those quakes was, it was big.
“Roman!”
The cry had Virgil tensing, ears perked, breath hitching. Roman? Roman was nearby?
He listened, trying to catch the muffled sound of voices once more.
“Come on!” Virgil heard Remus demand, “He’s getting closer! I can’t stop him when he’s like this!”
Virgil bolted in the direction the sound was coming from. He paused only briefly to shift back into his human form, yanking open the door to the small vestibule. He crossed the room in a few quick strides and shoved open another.
The sight of Roman’s form slumped against his twin, beaten, bruised, and bloodied had him coming up short.
He wasn’t dead…
He couldn’t be dead...
…………………………………………………………………….
“He crawled up the ivy on the Northeast side,” Logan mumbled from where he sat on the sloping bank, his human form engrossed in another vision as Patton finished scrapping the mud off himself.
“Is he alright?” the dragon asked, glancing up. “Has he run into trouble?”
“Not yet,” Logan reassured. “It appears that the guards are preoccupied elsewhere. Something must be hap-” Logan fell silent, his anxiety spiking enough to have Patton jumping.
“What?!” the dragon demanded, “What is it?!”
“It’s Roman!” Logan breathed, pulling himself out of his meditative state.
“What about him?!” Patton demanded as the other man met his gaze. He saw the answer immediately in the witch’s eyes.
“We need to go,” Logan replied simply, ignoring the question as he took hold of his partner’s hand and dragged him up the bank.
They were far too easy to spot out there in the open, but they had no other choice. Not anymore. Logan’s self-loathing doubled as they ran. He should have been able to master that invisibility charm! They could have gotten there faster! Why did he always have to take the safest route?!
………………………………………………………………..
“Get away from him!” Virgil growled at his friend’s twin. “What did you do?!”
“Badgerboy!” Remus breathed in surprise and relief. “Calm your tits and help me with him, quick before Noname shows up!” the man urged, trying to pull Roman up.
Virgil hesitated, another quake making him sway a bit before he gave in, moving to the opposite side and pulling Roman’s arm around his shoulders.
“He’s not…” Virgil asked, pleading as he glanced towards the twin.
“Dead?” Remus finished for him. “No. Not yet, but he will be soon if-”
Another roar shook the foundation, sending the ceiling before them crumbling down.
“Other way! Other way!” Virgil cried, scrambling back as a large stone slab landed just in front of them, trying to turn them in the opposite direction.
Remus attempted to comply, but only managing to pull Roman in a different direction sending the three of them sprawling to the floor.
“Great!” Virgil huffed, taking a moment to cover his mouth as he choked up more of the red liquid he was fairly certain needed to stay inside him. “Our exit is blocked, now what?!”
“Shh!” Remus growled, inching forwards.
“Don’t shush m-”
“Shut your fannyflaps!” the twin growled with a wave of his hand. “Listen!”
Silence fell between them as Virgil strained his ears. Slowly the sound of heavy footfalls and clanking armor drifted towards him.
“They’re coming,” Remus huffed as he straightened, gaze panicked as he tried to figure out a solution.
“We’ve got to get out of here!” Virgil urged, trying to pick up Roman once more.
“No! There’s no time!” Remus pointed out. “Even if you could escape, fatass over here,” he nodded towards his brother, “would just slow you down.”
“We can’t just let them capture us!” the witch protested.
Remus hesitated for only a brief moment before the words sank in. “That is exactly what we can do!” he breathed excitedly.
“What?!” Virgil scoffed. “Are you insane?!”
“Yes, but that’s beside the point,” Remus rushed, moving to Roman’s side once more. “Listen, Noname won’t kill Roman, he’s too important. If anything he will get him help. He’ll make sure Roman is safe and survives.”
“Yeah, and what about me?” Virgil scoffed. “And even if Roman survives, he’ll just be tortured again!”
“No, no!” Remus growled, “Ugh! I don’t have time to explain! Just… Just turn into your bad little badger self and get in!” he instructed, pulling at the collar of his shirt so that there was enough room for Virgil to crawl in.
“Ew! No!” Virgil shivered, pausing as one of the soldiers called out.
“Get in Badgerboy or we’re all dead!” Remus demanded, earning another look of pained disgust before Virgil finally complied.
The witch shifted back into a procyon, still hesitant to climb into the other man’s shirt. He could smell the guy from six feet away why would-
Remus scooped the beast up without warning, stuffing a clawing and hissing raccoon into his shirt just as a small group of men rounded the corner.
“I found him!” Remus called out to the soldiers as they approached. “Get him up and take him to Noname!” he ordered, moving to stand to the side as the men filed in to obey.
To be continued...

Check out Thor's scent!
---
The raid comes late in the evening.
You can hear the shouts of warriors and the clash of weapons. A deep voice is calling out instructions but you can’t make out any specific words. Just his voice. You can't do anything, really, except kneel in the center of your wagon-cage and try to lift up enough to not irritate the rope burns on your wrists more than you already have. The sounds eventually die down and you can hear distant, muffled conversations accompanied by the tramping of feet around the camp.
The raiders won, you decide sleepily, wondering who they are. Perhaps they're bandits. If so, they'll either keep you as a slave, sell you for cheap, or just kill you. You can’t bring yourself to stifle such a treacherous yearning but nonetheless, part of your heart hopes for the latter.
The lock on the wagon door rattles, startling you from your thoughts and sending your heart racing in a panic. Whoever it is gives up trying to unlock it and you hear the smash of metal against weaker metal. The sound draws an involuntary shudder up your spine and you instinctively try to squirm away.
The door opens, light from torches and the dying fires of your captors spilling into the small space. Silhouetted against the warm light is a huge figure.
“May I take your torch?” he says to a smaller figure that passes, his voice the same timber as the one giving orders earlier. He must be the leader, then. Good. Better to get this over with as soon as possible.
The torch is handed over and the man is lit up, as well as the interior of your wagon. Your stomach knots and you twist your body away before you can stop yourself, a base instinct telling you to cover your nudity despite how normal it's become.
He is handsome, that much you know even after all this time. His strong jaw is bearded and his hair is short, shorn close on the sides and a little longer on the top. He wears armor that seems somewhat familiar to you- in all honesty, all of him seems familiar but your tired and frightened mind can't place him. A long red cape hangs from his broad shoulders and he wields an enormous ax in his other hand.
His eyes go wide when he sees you fully, and he rushes forward to cut your wrists free with a small knife he pulls from his belt. You yank yourself beyond his grasp with a frightened noise, scrambling away until your bare back hits the wall. He steps forward but stops when you try to make yourself seem even smaller. Instead, he crouches- even then he is huge and when he reaches out a hand, you shrink away with a whimper you can't hold back.
The sound seems to startle him and he freezes a second before turning his palm towards you in a placating gesture. Slowly, he sinks back until he sits cross-legged like a child.
“Hello,” he says, his tone soft. In the torchlight, his eyes are warm and endearing. “What's your name?”
What is your name? You stare for a long moment, trying to dredge up memories locked away long ago. They're slow to come but eventually, you find what you're looking for.
“Y/N,” you croak, the word strange on your tongue. Your voice is hoarse from not doing much besides screaming, and it surprises you to find that speaking now hurts. The dark magicians must have liked your screaming, for they never decided to remove your voice as they did to many others who came and went over the years.
“Y/N,” he rumbles, and a tiny part of you likes the way your name rolls off his lips. “Y/N, daughter of Lord Týr, betrothed of Bjǫrn?”
The names are familiar and conjure images of loving smiles and embraces and home, the memories sparking warmth in your chest. You nod.
He smiles at you, sweet and a little boyish. “Do you know who I am?”
You wish you did. His identity is on the tip of your tongue but your mind is sick of digging through the past and refuses to relinquish its hold on the memory. You shake your head.
He doesn't seem hurt. “I suppose it's been many years and I did look a bit different. I am Thor Odinson, King of Asgard.”
Thor. How could you have ever forgotten? He's older- obviously- and there's something in his face beyond age that has changed him- you're not sure what yet. But he is unmistakable.
You curl your arms around your body even tighter, suddenly very aware of your nudity. “My King,” you mouth, digging your fingernails into your biceps hard enough that you're going to find little red marks later.
His smile is kind and welcoming and his hand is still outstretched. “May I come closer?”
You hesitate a moment before giving a small nod. Thor lifts up and scoots a few feet closer as a smaller, more female figure appears in the doorway.
“My King,” she says, silver-grey armor gleaming in the firelight.
Thor throws up a hand to stop her, though. “Not yet, Brunnhilde.”
She huffs, cocking a hip, and you can feel the tense fear creeping through your body again.
“Y/N,” Thor says softly. “Look at me. Don't look at her.”
You turn your eyes back to his face and the tension slips away a little.
“You're shivering,” he observes. “Are you cold?”
Are you? Probably. You weren't paying attention, to be honest.
“Here.” Before you can respond, Thor is unhooking his cape and swinging it around to offer it to you. “You can use this until we can get you something decent.”
You eye the rich fabric a moment before reaching a tentative hand out. Part of you is still afraid it's going to be pulled back, even though you know in your heart that Thor would never be that cruel. As soon as you get a hand on the cape, you dig in and yank it close.
“There you go,” he murmurs, smiling as you cover yourself the best you can in your position. “Better?”
You nod and can feel yourself relax even further.
“Sire, we need to move,” Brunnhilde says, a little impatient.
Thor nods. “We do. Y/N, can you walk?”
You don't want to but it's probably unavoidable, at least for a little while. “Yes,” you whisper, gathering the cape close and beginning to rise. Your feet are covered in tiny cuts, despite the calluses from going barefoot for so long, and you remember too late the damage that was done to your ankle during a particularly brutal punishment yesterday. Said ankle gives out as soon as you put weight on it and you find yourself crumpling with a cry.
Thor is suddenly there, powerful arms encircling your body and supporting you. “No, don't hurt yourself. I'll carry you, if that's alright?”
You nod, fighting the roll of your stomach at his touch. He murmurs soft words, though, as he helps you adjust the cape so it's wrapped around your shoulders and the turmoil in your belly calms.
When you're sufficiently covered, he helps you limp to sit on the edge of the wagon before hopping down himself. Brunnhilde is holding the torch now and Thor is free to loop his arms behind your shoulders and knees and lift you against his chest. You squeak, a little caught off guard even though you knew it would happen, and some bruises protest but you don't voice that. This is considerably better than walking.
“Rest a little,” he encourages as he begins his journey to wherever- you don't particularly care. “We found the dark magicians because they wandered so close to our camp. It's not far. Once there, we'll get you cleaned up, your wounds dressed, some proper clothes, and a place to sleep.”
He continues to speak, both to you and to the warriors who cluster around. His voice rumbles through his chest and into your body, deep and soothing, and you find your eyelids drifting shut.

Reinforcement Learning and Asynchronous Actor-Critic Agent (A3C) Algorithm, Explained
While supervised and unsupervised machine learning is a much more widespread practice among enterprises today, reinforcement learning (RL), as a goal-oriented ML technique, finds its application in mundane real-world activities. Gameplay, robotics, dialogue systems, autonomous vehicles, personalization, industrial automation, predictive maintenance, and medicine are among RL's target areas. In this blog post, we provide a concrete explanation of RL, its applications, and Asynchronous Actor-Critic Agent (A3C), one of the state-of-the art algorithms developed by Google's DeepMind.
Key Terms and Concepts
Reinforcement learning refers to the type of machine learning technique enabling an agent to learn to interact with an environment (area outside the agent's borders) by trial and error using reward (feedback from its actions and experiences). The agent seeks ways to maximize the reward via interacting with the environment instead of analyzing the data provided. The agent is a learning controller taking actions in the environment and receives feedback in the form of reward.
The environment, space where the agent gets everything needed from a given state. The environment can be static or dynamic, and its changes can be stochastic and deterministic correspondingly. It is usually formulated as Markov decision process (MDP), a mathematical framework for decision-making development.
However, real-world situations often do not convey information to commit a decision (some context is left behind the currently observed scene). Hence, the Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) framework comes on the scene. In POMDP the agent needs to take into account probability distribution over states. In cases where it’s impossible to know that distribution, RL researchers use a sequence of multiple observations and actions to represent a current state (i.e., stack of image frames from a game) to better understand a situation. It makes possible to use RL methods as if we are dealing with MDP.
The reward is a scalar value that agents receive from the environment, and it depends on the environment’s current state (St ), the action the agent has performed grounding on the current state (At ), and the following state of the environment (St+1):
Policy (π) stands for an agent’s strategy of behavior at a given time. It is a mapping from the state to the actions to be taken to reach the next state. Speaking formally, it is a probability distribution over actions in a given state, meaning the likelihood of every action in a particular state. In short, policy holds an answer to the “How to act?” question for an agent.
State-value function and action-value function are the ways to assess the policy, as RL aims to learn the best policy. Value function V holds an answer to the question “How good current state is?”, namely an expected return starting from the state (S) and following policy (π).
Sebastian Dittert defines the action-value of a state as “the expected return if the agent chooses action A according to a policy π.” Correspondingly, it is the answer to “How good current action is?”
Thus, the goal of an agent is to find the policy () maximizing the expected return (E[R]). Through the multiple iterations, the agent’s strategy becomes more successful.
One of the most crucial trade-offs for RL is balancing between exploration and exploitation. In short, exploration in RL aims at collecting experience from new, previously unseen regions. It potentially holds cons like a risk, nothing new to learn, and no guarantee to get any useful further information. On the contrary, exploitation updates model parameters according to gathered experience. In its turn, it does not provide any new data and could not be efficient in case of scarce rewards. An ideal approach is making an agent explore the environment until being able to commit an optimal decision.
Reinforcement Learning vs. Supervised and Unsupervised Learning
Comparing RL with AI planning, the latter does cover all aspects, but not the exploration. It leads to computing the right sequence of decisions based on the model indicating the impact on the environment.
Supervised machine learning involves only optimization and generalization via learning from the previous experience, guided with the correct labels. The agent is learning from its experience based on the given dataset. This ML technique is more task-oriented and applicable for recognition, predictive analytics, and dialogue systems. It is an excellent option to solve the problems having the reference points or ground truth.
Similarly, unsupervised machine learning also involves only optimization and generalization but having no labels referring to the environment. It is data-oriented and applicable for anomaly and pattern discovery, clustering, autoencoders, association, and hyper-personalization pattern of AI.
Asynchronous Advantage Actor-Critic (A3C) Algorithm
The A3C algorithm is one of RL's state-of-the-art algorithms, which beats DQN in few domains (for example, Atari domain, look at the fifth page of a classic paper by Google Deep Mind). Also, A3C can be beneficial in experiments that involve some global network optimization with different environments in parallel for generalization purposes. Here is the magic behind it:
Asynchronous stands for the principal difference of this algorithm from DQN, where a single neural network interacts with a single environment. On the contrary, in this case, we've got a global network with multiple agents having their own set of parameters. It creates every agent's situation interacting with its environment and harvesting the different and unique learning experience for overall training. That also deals partially with RL sample correlation, a big problem for neural networks, which are optimized under the assumption that input samples are independent of each other (not possible in games).
Actor-Critic stands for two neural networks — Actor and Critic. The goal of the first one is in optimizing the policy (“How to act?”), and the latter aims at optimizing the value (“How good action is?”). Thus, it creates a complementary situation for an agent to gain the best experience of fast learning.
Advantage: imagine that advantage is the value that brings us an answer to the question: “How much better the reward for an agent is than it could be expected?” It is the other factor of making the overall situation better for an agent. In this way, the agent learns which actions were rewarding or penalizing for it. Formally it looks like this:
Q(s, a) stands for the expected future reward of taking action at a particular state
V(s) stands for the value of being in a specific state
Challenges and Opportunities
Reinforcement learning’s first application areas are gameplay and robotics, which is not surprising as it needs a lot of simulated data. Meanwhile, today RL applies for mundane tasks like planning, navigation, optimization, and scenario simulation in various verticals chains. For instance, Amazon used it for their logistics and warehouse operations’ optimization and for developing autonomous drone delivery.
Simultaneously, RL still poses challenging questions for industries to answer later. Given its exploratory nature, it is not applicable in some areas yet. Here are some reasons:
Meanwhile, RL seems to be worth time and resources investment as industry players like Amazon show. Just give it some time, since investment in knowledge always requires it.

PENCE LAYING LOW IN INDIANA.....FEARS FOR HIS LIFE
Yesterday on Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough said Mike Pence was “in fear for his life…..he was laying low in Indiana.” All because of Trump’s actions leading up to and on January 6.
Scarborough blamed Trump for putting the former Vice President “on the hit list.”
A shame from my perspective also. Pence could not have been a more loyal Vice President. From Trump’s perspective, Pence wavered at the end. From mine, he did his job in interpreting the Constitution properly.
Some came to kill Pence and Pelosi on January 6. Others decided to during Trump’s rally under the white tent before.
Trump put Pence behind the eight ball. Before and at the rally in suggesting Pence had the power to invalidate the election. Trump told everyone at the rally: Pence “did not have the courage to do it.”
Trump’s rabble rousers were ready. They had heard the words of their Master. As they proceeded to the Capitol, they chanted “hang Mike Pence.”
It has been reported 2 police officers died by suicide following what occurred at the Capitol. One a Capitol police officer. The other a member of the MDP.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a “national terrorist bulletin” yesterday. The bulletin indicated there was a “lingering potential” for “violence.” From persons motivated by anti-government sentiment following Biden’s election.
The Department suggested the January 6 riot emboldened extremists and set the stage for additional attacks.
Amazing how many Republicans have jumped ship since the election. It was reported yesterday 30,000 Republicans changed their registration to another party.
The number is probably higher. Sufficient data is not available. Only a handful of states report voter registration and information about voters switching parties on a weekly basis.
Some things in life are carried a step too far. One is the removal of statues of persons who had ties to slavery in the past and public buildings named after those considered to have had black animosity.
San Francisco joined the group supporting name removal yesterday. The San Francisco School Board had a resolution under consideration for 3 months. Forty four schools involved.
The Board approved a resolution calling for removing names that honored historical figures with direct or broad ties to slavery, oppression, racism or the “subjugation” of human beings.
Some of the names on the list included George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Father Junipero Serra, Paul Revere, Francis Scott Key, and Dianne Feinstein.
A step too far.
Yes, Washington owned slaves. Everyone did back then. It was a form of wealth. People forget how Washington made it possible for our country to be born, the cold winter he spent at Valley Forge, and his crossing the Delaware in the middle of a freezing Christmas Eve to defeat the Hussein troops.
Without Lincoln, the black race might still be where they were 150 some odd years ago. He is honored. Referred to by Americans as the Great Emancipator. On a personal level, he was shot in the back of the head and died for the good he achieved as a result of the Civil War.
Would the colonists have won the Revolutionary War had Paul Revere not galloped through the night shouting: “To arms, to arms, the British are coming.” The Revolution might never have gotten beyond Concord and Lexington.
Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner.
Dianne Feinstein is a today woman. What did she do to blacks?
San Francisco is a gay community. Overwhelmingly. Why not require San Francisco to tear down the statues of any persons who were anti-gay at any time in any fashion? Also, those public buildings that were named after anti-gay persons.
Another great inquiry in the Citizens’ Voice: “If the City gets 100 vaccine doses, what portion of that goes to second doses?”
Key West continues to receive acclimation as being a popular place to vacation.
The 2021 Travelers Choice Award for Destinations listed Key West fifth. Behind New York, Maui, Las Vegas and New Orleans.
Miami appears to have fallen behind after many years at or near the top. It is now listed #18.
DAY 3…..Greece The First Time
Posted on May 30, 2012 by Key West Lou
I cannot believe I have been in Novara only three days. It seems like a lifetime. Especially in view of my experiences.
Earthquakes still in the news big time here. Much destruction to Northern Italy.
I reported being in two earthquakes yesterday. Turns out it was three. Maybe five. Three hours after publication, I felt another one. I was sitting at the computer at that time also. I did not consider it of any consequence. After all, I had been involved in two already that day. Last night while watching television, it was reported that Novara had suffered two more quakes around eight in the evening. I never felt them.
Many dead. Significant damage. Sad. The people of Novara spoke of the earthquakes much yesterday. It was like being in Key West following a hurricane.
Speaking of hurricanes, I was thinking yesterday whether a earthquake or hurricane was worse. One is short and the other prolonged. Both cause significant loss of life and damage. They ended up equal in my mind. Better that both not occur, however.
Earthquakes are not common to this region. So I have been told. The word on the news is that whatever problem there is in the San Francisco area exists now in northern Italy. A shelf or whatever and it is moving. Italian news describes it as a mountain rising to the surface. The scientists have predicted at least 70 more earthquakes over time as a result. We shall see.
Lisa got Skype yesterday. We skyped for the first time in the morning Lisa time. The grandkids had already left for school. Corey joined in. It was exciting to see them both. I hope I get to speak with Robert and Ally soon.
Around 5, I decided to take a walk. I rambled up and down the streets of the historic centre of Novara. It was a high knowing that most buildings were a thousand years old. The first floor the best quality shops. Top floors great apartments. By the way, people live in apartments here. Homes are considered too expensive. I do not understand. Most of the apartments go for $1 million dollars plus.
My walk led me to discover the Piazzetta Delle Erbe. Piazzetta means little piazza. I am learning.
In English the Piazzetta is the Little Square of Herbs. Back when, probably a thousand years ago, growers and merchants came from all over Europe and Asia to buy and sell herbs at this market.
Close by, I made another discovery. The Broletto. I do not know what the term means. It was the place where the first market in all of Italy was established in medieval times. Everything and anything sold. It helped the Novara area at the time to gain financial independence
The best was yet to come. The Partigiani. It is at the Piazza Dei Martiri. Partigiani means partisans. The Piazza translates to the Plaza of Martyrs.
I learned the story of this special place while sitting at an outside cafe having a drink and watching the world go by. Two gentleman at the next table engaged me in conversation. They spoke English. Americans are revered here. I am being treated with kindness and respect because I am an American. It was not unusual for them to engage me in conversation. They started the conversation with…..American?
Novara was occupied by the Nazis during World War II. Some of the locals were not pleased. They became partisans. Guerrilla types working as the underground. Five were captured. They were placed against a brick wall and shot by the Nazis. In full view of the citizens of Novara.
After the war a small monument was placed near where they were killed. A tree was also planted. It still stands today. The tree. By itself against a large red brick wall. Bullet holes could be seen in the wall.
It dawned on me that the medieval thousand year old buildings I have been speaking about were in good shape. I asked were they not destroyed during World War II? Bombs, artillery and tank fire. No, I was told. There was never any fighting or bombing or what have you in and to Novara. The Nazis walked out and the Americans walked in. The people of Novara were very lucky. Other communities in the area, such as Milan, sustained significant damage.
My walk took me past many fine stores. I was particularly impressed with the shops featuring apparel for women. The most beautiful clothes I have ever seen! Absolutely magnificent! Bright, shiny and smart for summer wearing. The thought struck me it would have been nice to have a woman to take into the stores and buy a new wardrobe for.
Remember the 124 steps I spoke of yesterday. There are not 124. I counted them again yesterday. At a time when I was not suffering from jet lag and a bad stomach. There are 68. Still a lot of steps for this old man!
The effects of jet lag are still with me. I went to bed at nine last night. Did not sleep one minute. Finally got up at 5:30 in the morning to start this blog. I will pay for the no sleep later in the day.
Never got to Milan yesterday to view the Last Supper. The trains were out of commission because of the earthquake.
I cannot let this experience pass. At the dinner party three nights ago, one of the meats was a dark one. Deep purple. Sliced thin. Every one was going crazy over it. They loved it! A bit of lemon and they ate away!
I had a few pieces. Did not particularly like it. Other guests were surprised I did not.
Yesterday similar meat was served to me for lunch. I again was not crazy about it. I asked what is this? It was horse meat! Horse meat is legal in Italy. There are specialty butcher shops that sell horse meat. And lest I forget, donkey also. That was it. No more for me! I explained that horse meat was not legal in the United States for human consumption. My fellow diners were shocked.
The big deal today is for me to go to the bank. I have no euros. Only American money. The exchange process should be interesting. Is cash or a credit card required? Can both be used?
Stephanie Kaple is one of the loves of my life. She lives in Key West. She is known as the Island Shoe Girl. She only wears expensive shoes with high high heels. Looks good in them!
Stephanie now plays bocce. She joined the same bocce league I play in. She wears heels while playing. Not wise from my perspective. But that is Stephanie!
She writes a blog as I do. A recent one was interesting and funny. Take a look at it if you have the time. A short read. www.islandshoegirl.com.
That is all for today folks! Sorry for the length but there is much to share regarding my trip. Tomorrow I leave for Athens to start the Greece phase of this trip. Athens, Santorini, Mykinos and some deserted island. Five weeks will be spent in Greece. Then back to Italy for a while. Portofino and Morocco under consideration for the scheduled end of my trip. If I return. I am enjoying everything so much I might stay.
Enjoy your day!

Charlotte Japp Gets Older And Younger Professionals To Network Together
By Richard Eisenberg, Next Avenue
Charlotte Japp, the 30-year-old founder of the uplifting CIRKEL community platform for intergenerational networking, drew inspiration for it from what happened to her parents.
“Growing up, I saw both of my parents get aged out of their careers and pretty much get forced to pivot and start their own businesses,” she recalls. “So, for me, it seemed normal that after you hit a certain age, you just worked for yourself in this age bubble, or silo, at home.”
That didn’t seem right to Japp, who was recently named one of the nonprofit Encore.org’s 2020 Gen2Gen Innovation Fellows. Through CIRKEL (the Danish word for circle, since workers need to close the intergenerational loop), Japp is helping older and younger people to network with each other, one generation assisting the other.
Next Avenue: What made you get interested in intergenerational mentoring?
Charlotte Japp: It was a personal revelation when I started working for the first time after college [at the media company, Vice]. I saw how age-segregated our world is, but more specifically how age segregated our work lives are.
I said to myself, ‘There’s no one around here who’s more than ten or fifteen years older than me. That’s not just weird because we all look kind of the same, but it’s also weird because there’s no one here to guide me in this really foundational moment in my career.’
So, I thought: Is that really so crazy to have someone in your life who’s older than you, who can give you guidance?
My parents ended up being that for me, they gave me a lot of ideas and a lot of kind of coaching about navigating your first job — my first office experience. And I was giving them a lot of tips and tricks and intel from my life working at this cutting-edge media company as well.
“Ageism is a huge issue and it pushes people out of the workplace before they’re ready to retire or before they want to retire.”
So, for me, it wasn’t just that multigenerational workplaces need to be normalized and that mentorship should be more accessible. But that also mentoring needs to be a two-way street — and my parents needed that support and guidance in their careers, just like my friends and I did.
So, what did you decide to do about this?
I decided that I wanted to put something out there and see if people liked it. And that was the first CIRKEL event, in New York City, in June 2018.
I just wanted more spaces where there were people with different ideas, different experiences — life and work experiences — in a room and have a drink with them and see what happens. And it turned out that a lot of other people wanted those spaces, too.
And the first event was a hit. People wouldn’t leave at the end of the night, they couldn’t stop talking. And it was really refreshing. You know, it was just such a simple concept.
Tell me more about that first event. How did you do it? Who showed up? How did you find them?
I wanted to feature a woman that I looked up to who already had a successful career, but a career that evolved with the times. I thought that was really helpful to both younger professionals and older professionals. So, I tapped my best friend’s mom, Diane di Costanzo, who is in her late fifties.
She’s an editorial director at Meredith Corp. MDP [a media giant that publishes magazines and websites] and has become way more digital. She talked about how the industry had changed and how she had to evolve with it. And so, she gave a presentation to a multigenerational audience from age twenty-one to late seventies.
People wanted to know what was next. They were like, sign me up for your newsletter and I didn’t even have a newsletter. So I did more events from there.
What happened next with CIRKEL and where are you with it today?
For the next year, I continued to put on these events, each one focused on a different industry. We’ve done everything from tech to fashion. And I brought on a co-founder who had more of a finance brain. And we started working together on a problem — kind of a good problem — that we were seeing at the events. People of all ages and professional backgrounds turned up and they wanted to find the right people in the crowd to talk to.
So, we developed what is now CIRKEL Up, our member platform, to help people find relevant connections, people who are relevant to your next step, who can teach you that skill that you’re missing out on or if you want to make a pivot into a new industry.
It was just in New York a year ago. People were getting matched over email; some people would meet up for coffee or a cocktail and have these one-on-one conversations that were so eye opening.
We’ve had CIRKEL Up going for a year and we’re continuing to grow. And we went virtual with Covid. The blessing to that was we’ve been able to open up to global members. So, we have members in fifteen countries and all over the U. S. and it allows us to really find those overlaps, those kinds of people all over the world that you wouldn’t normally cross paths with, across generations, that we think you need to connect with.
The meetups were only in person for about a little over six months. I miss those times, having a glass of wine with someone who has so much wisdom and great stories to share. Now, people say things like: ‘Okay, well when we’re back to normal, we’re getting a drink in person if we’re both in New York.’
I can understand how this is all really helpful for younger people. What’s in it for the older people?
Ageism is a huge issue and it pushes people out of the workplace before they’re ready to retire or before they want to retire. We’re living longer and we need to work longer to fund that longer life. So, we’re seeing a lot of people in midlife who are seeking a paycheck because they need to continue to work, but they’re also looking for purpose. And sometimes the thing that they need is some mentoring of their own.
And it’s amazing how someone who’s younger than them can actually fill in any gaps that are needed for them to take on that next step in their career.
I really love how we’re empowering longer careers, whether that’s helping you set your foundation when you’re younger or continuing to power your career as you’re taking on a new stage in life later.
“Everyone has something that they can teach.”
So, you’re finding the mentoring is really helping the younger people and the older people in different ways.
Exactly.
We just had a multigenerational future of work conference and Chip Conley [a former Next Avenue Influencer in Aging] was one of our speakers. He’s the perfect example of how we need to stay curious, to have that growth mindset and to be a mentor.
He started his own hospitality company at twenty-six and in his fifties started working with Airbnb’s founders in the early days. He found that he was also an intern, because there were so many things that he had to learn about working in the tech world. So, he was teaching about hospitality and running a business and at the same time he was learning about how to ship new products. So, he’s become a real figurehead for two-way mentoring. He wrote the book ‘Wisdom at Work: The Making of a Modern Elder.’
Now you’ve also started an online learning service, Learn With CIRKEL. Tell me about that.
With Covid, this crazy time has opened up a lot of questions about what’s next. If you got laid off, how are you going to equip yourself with the tools you need for the next job application? What is the game plan moving forward? And so, we noticed that a lot of our members want resources. They want inspiration.
And Learn With CIRKEL is a program where our members who are all very experienced in different ways, whether they’re twenty-five or seventy-five, they all have skills they’ve accumulated over time.
And this is the platform for them to share that knowledge in a very short lesson.
So it’s a virtual lesson where anyone anywhere in the world who’s a member can experience it. Everyone has something that they can teach and the audience of other CIRKEL members can learn something.
What are they teaching?
The first lesson was about drawing, from one of our artist members.
Some lessons are more technical. I taught one about Squarespace [a website building and hosting company]. A lot of people use websites as a business card basically. So, if you want to sell a product or a service, you really need to have that online real estate.
We had one about Google Analytics, which can be very intimidating. We had one about personal branding, which I think was a big hit. That’s pretty big these days.
What would you say you’ve learned about intergenerational mentoring since starting CIRKEL?
Sometimes it’s a hit, sometimes it’s a miss; mostly it’s a hit thankfully. But sometimes, the younger person feels like they have to take a back seat and just listen and learn. And I actually have to remind people you’re here for a reason; everyone has something that they could be learning or improving.
And sometimes you need to listen as much as you’re speaking. That seems simple, but you have to say it over and over again to remind people how to approach a simple meeting when you’re talking to someone from a different generation. So, we often encourage people to ask the question: ‘How can I help you?’ What are you dealing with right now that I could potentially offer some advice on?’
And what are you finding that older people are getting from younger people?
A lot of times, people who are over fifty work for themselves or as consultants or freelancers, and so they can sometimes feel a little out of the loop. These little tips and tricks that help people feel like any disadvantage that would be caused by their age can be smoothed over.
Any final thoughts?
Our lives are enriched by diversity, and that’s a big topic right now. And age needs to be included in it.
Research shows that multigenerational teams perform better and are happier and more productive. But are all these generations doing their best work if they’re not talking to each other, connecting and trusting each other? At CIRKEL, we’re starting to talk to businesses, trying to bring all the magic that we’ve created to work world.
Two Questions for Our Influencers
If you could change one thing about aging in America, what would it be?
I would like to see an America where the more life and professional experience you have directly correlates to more career opportunities, not fewer. Unfortunately, over half of Americans over fifty years old get pushed out of their jobs before they choose to retire. If we’re going to change that paradigm, we need to create more ways for older and younger professionals to connect and exchange their different, but equally valuable, knowledge.
How has the Covid-19 pandemic changed your perspective on aging?
Covid-19 has not only been a public health crisis, but it has also been a period of immense racial and political tension. At a time when people of all ages had to self-isolate, it was also a time when people so deeply needed to come together. While I’ve always believed in the power of intergenerational connection, I was reminded how much networking can address so much more than just career development — it’s good for our mental health and overall well-being for all ages. During the pandemic, I’ve connected with people ages eighteen to eighty-four and it’s been clear that we all share so many vulnerabilities and fears that can be addressed when we have open, cross-generational conversations.

Summary: When cleaning up a camp of dark magicians near the new Asgard, Thor stumbles upon Y/N - the daughter of an Asgardian nobleman, who disappeared before Thor first traveled to Midgard in 2011.
A/N: I started writing this fic pre-Endgame and, as such, it exists in a strange world where they didn't make new Asgard on Earth and also maybe Thanos didn't win? Idk. (Loki's still dead, though. Sorry.)

Check out Thor's scent
---
Verdandi is a tall, lithe woman who sweeps into Thor's small study with an air of confidence so intimidating that you can't speak for the first half-hour you spend in her presence - thankfully, she understands and directs her initial questions on the situation at Thor. Once she's satisfied with the information he's given, she quickly ushers both your father and Thor out of the room, assuring them that you're in good hands before shutting the door in their faces.
"Now," she says, practically gliding around the study as she opens the heavy curtains and begins to prepare tea from the tray a servant brought earlier. "Would you like tea?"
You shrug, eyeing her warily.
"I'll make you a cup. You don't have to drink it but it's there if you want to." She asks a series of yes or no questions until she's made the tea the way you like it. You take a tentative sip when she hands you the mug and she seems pleased by the soft sound of pleasure you make.
"Glad I haven't lost my touch." She stirs honey into her own mug and then sits in a chair across from where you’re reclined on the couch, injured ankle propped up on a small pile of pillows Thor arranged for you. "Are you comfortable?"
"Yes," you murmur, glad she's not jumping right into things. It eases the tightness in your throat.
"Let me know if that changes. And, of course, if you need to stop at any time or you want someone to be here with you, that's okay. I would rather you push through it and learn to handle these things on your own but I'm willing to make an exception today considering how fresh the trauma is."
A wave of gratitude washes over you at those words. You understand exactly what she's saying - you can't always run to Thor when you're scared.
Verdandi eases you through the conversation, listening patiently when you can speak and asking a different question when you can’t. By the end of your time with her, you’ve already had one of what she called a “panic attack” - a term she apparently picked up while doing research on Midgard - but you managed to get through it with her guidance. She’s also given you some suggestions for when you have flashbacks.
“I know I said I want you to work through things on your own,” she says, taking your now empty mug from you and returning it to the tea tray along with her own. “But I recommend you find someone to support you through panic attacks and flashbacks. It seems the King himself is a safe person for you but I’m not sure how often he can be around. I would like to speak with Lord Tyr and Thor again, give them some guidance on how to help you through these things. Is that all right?”
You nod, hugging yourself.
She pats your shoulder. “I’ll send them in once I’m done. I will see you next week.”
It’s strange and a little frightening, being alone in the room. You rub your hands against your upper arms, trying to drive the sudden chill from your body.
“Thor,” you manage, eyes darting around the room. The window is covered by a heavy curtain and your mind races, your heart following suit. You didn’t hear it open but could someone have…? “Thor!”
The door flies open and suddenly Thor is by your side, huge hands cradling your face and forcing your eyes to focus on his. Your breathing is ragged, coming short and quick.
“I’m here,” he says, thumbs stroking over your cheekbones. “Deep breathes, Y/N. Deep breathes. Like me.”
He takes slow, deep breaths and you focus on that, doing your best to match your breathing to his as you curl your hands around his wrists. Gradually, your heart rate slows and you feel yourself relaxing.”
“‘M sorry,” you murmur, leaning into his touch. “I don’t know what happened. I was just… alone.”
You glance over Thor’s shoulder to see your father in the doorway, and suddenly feel self-conscious. You don’t want him to see you this way.
Thor seems to sense your discomfort and he glances over his shoulder to see Tyr. “Please give her a moment,” he requests. “I will fetch you when she’s feeling better.”
Tyr tenses, instinctively going on the defensive. “I’m her father. I should be here for here.”
You duck your head down, shaking it a little. Your father must see because he murmurs “Nevermind, I’ll go” and then you hear the door latch.
“He’s gone,” Thor tells you, gently lifting your chin. “You were alone and it frightening you?”
You make an affirming noise, relaxing under his attention. For some reason, every fiber of your being finds comfort in Thor’s presence, and you remember what Verdandi said about him being a “safe person”. That sounds like the right label for whatever Thor is to you. His warm hands lift you up so he can sit behind you on the couch, your body resting against his chest, and you happily snuggle in close, allowing his proximity to draw any remaining tension from your body.
“Better?” he asks, voice a low rumble in his chest.
“Better,” you echo. You’re still hurting, mourning the loss of Bjorn and your old home, and you know you have a long way to go but right now, in Thor’s arms? ‘Better’ isn’t too far off.
You settle into Thor’s embrace, letting the warm strength of his body and the steady beat of his heart lull you into that state between being awake and asleep. Eventually your father comes in. He and Thor begin speaking over you, keeping their voices low so they don’t bother you. You drift in and out, catching only bits and pieces of the conversation. You’re only really pulled back to attention when you hear your father say your name.
“Thank you for taking care of Y/N,” your father is saying. “I am… unsure how to handle all of this, especially since she doesn’t seem comfortable with me knowing anything about what she’s gone through.”
You open your eyes a sliver to see Thor looking down at you with a soft expression. One huge hand curls around your head, thumb rubbing back and forth, before he resettles it on your upper arm.
“She is… something else,” Thor murmurs. “I’m surprised by how comfortable she is with me.”
“Verdandi did call you her safe person,” Tyr reminds him. “Y/N is already relying on you a great deal. As her father, I need to know - is this temporary? Or will you be here for her, no matter what?”
You stay quiet, curious to hear what Thor’s response will by.
“I know warriors who’ve gone through much less than she has and not recovered,” Thor says slowly, “and yet this lítit álpt… she’s is incredible. Perhaps it’s her strength that draws me in. Perhaps it’s something else. I’m not sure. All I know is that I need to be here to help her heal, however long that will take.”

Got a few questions on how to remove the dreaded “black spots” that can occur during conversions, so here’s a quick little tutorial on how I do it. :)
To note: this only works for clothes without back faces! (or if the inner layers are a separate group from the outer layers.) So this won’t work with hairs! For hairs, you’d have to actually pull apart the front and back layers into different groups!
Anyways - on to the tutorial!
The piece I’m gonna use for this tutorial is the “Chinco Shorts” converted by MDP here! While it’s not the most extreme case, you can still see a little bit of blackness at the bottom of the shorts:
If you’re editing an existing mesh, extract the mesh with simPE and save it to a work folder you’ll remember. If you’re converting a mesh, it’s always a good idea to export and then re-import with the unimesh plugin before doing anything else with it (ie. adding morphs, making other ages, etc) just to check. There usually isn’t a problem, but once in a while they’ll pop out of nowhere.
Once you have your problem mesh in milkshape, click the “Select” tool and make sure it’s set to “Face” and “By Vertex”.
Then face select the problem area. Be sure to avoid selecting areas after “folds” or edges like the above (like the bottom of the shorts where the legs meet in this one).
Once the problem area(s) are selected, go to the “Groups” tab and click “Regroup”. This will separate the selected faces into a new group, like so:
Depending on how many black spots a mesh has and where, you may have to make several groups to avoid “overlapping” vertices. In this case, we don’t have to worry about it.
Once you have isolated the problem area into it’s own group, switch the “Select” tool back to “Vertex” and select the vertices where the problem starts (in this case, the bottom). Then in the menu bar go to “Vertex” and click on “Cat’s Normal Smoother”.
And tada! No more black spots! Once you’re satisfied that all the black spots are gone, select the groups and “regroup” them back into one single mesh.
If you’re editing an existing mesh, make sure to open up the “Comment” box and remove the extra comments after regrouping them back together. (I don’t really know what happens if a mesh has multiple comments saying the same thing, since I haven’t tried it, but better safe than sorry \o/)
If it’s a mesh you’re converting yourself and haven’t put any comments in yet, then no worries! :D
If everything looks good, then go ahead and add those morphs and other ages :) If it’s an existing mesh, you may have to redo the morphs again (or if it’s very simple like the example in this tut, you can apply the same method to the morphs, but it has to be done exactly the same way or the morphs might explode; don’t quote me on this tho, since I’ve had mixed results...).
Yay! No more black spots of doom! :D Hope this is useful! If there’s anything you don’t get, feel free to drop me a note and I’ll try to help out!

"I was really sick with respiratory problems with mild fever for several weeks, then I had a private session with Jimmy. Magic happened. I told him about my symptoms. My breathing was not normal. He went into treatment. In about a minute I was able to breathe deeply and my voice became stronger instantly. Jimmy told me I had an emotional blockage In my lung. For the next few days I had heat flashes several times and my temperature became normal again. I feel soooooo much better. My vitality is back. Another thing - I need to do major repairs with my condo. I was really perplexed as to how I should pay for this. Mortgage loan?? etc. I was listening to Jimmy’s abundance MP3s and all of a sudden my boyfriend offered to pay for this and told me not to worry about money. How great is that?!!! I am so grateful and thankful. Words cannot express my gratitude. Jimmy is a miracle.” - Helen from Japan

~ BEING FULLY PRESENT ~ I believe, think, know and feel that I can and will be fully in the present. I am ready, willing and able to do my best to be here and now and accomplish each task one at a time. I know, when, where how and why to be still and remember that the energy of spirit is inside all of us now and always and so it is. I am asking in all languages and throughout all time lines and so it is!
From the Fish Box
"Dear Jimmy, Wishing a VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you. You are definitely one of the reasons I am grateful this season. Thank you for your steady, humorous, humble, heartfelt messages each week. I am blessed by your presence. Love," - Joanna
"Just a short note to wish you and yours a wonderful, joyous and harmonious Thanksgiving. I would like to say a big thank you for all the incredibly, amazing work that you do, in sharing it with the world which is very much helping, supporting and guiding me on my own personal growth path, thank you, thank you, thank you, many blessings. Happy Thanksgiving." - Loretta J
