Sure, she had to stay in the hospital longer, was much smaller than most babies, and had to have constant check ups as she grew, but truthfully, she was perfect. Meant to be a late summer baby, but born at the end of June, it was clear from the start that there wasn’t much that was going to stand in Valencia Lopez’s way in life.
Valencia had always felt the pressure of being perfect. She knew that she had to do well in school, had to get into an ivy league school, and had to fulfill her own unrealistic expectations. And she enjoyed the pressure. She found books, and school fascinating, and it was rare to find her without her nose in a book. In fact, it was her love for school so much that drew her into tutoring. She was determined to help other students feel the same love and passion that she felt. And more than anything, she loved the sense of pride she got whenever someone she tutored finally began to understand their coursework. And she was stubborn, she could never give up on someone she was tutoring, she’d explain things 300 different ways until there was finally a way for them to understand.
It was this passion that had originally given her the idea to become a teacher, however, that dream changed quickly. While she thought being a teacher was a fantastic path, and she could see herself being undeniably happy in that role, there was something else tugging at her attention. Underprivileged schools. Schools that could not afford the tools that she’d always dreamed to have at her disposal growing up; schools that could not even afford books in some cases. After spending her years at just such a school, she was drawn into charities to try and help raise money for educational programs. And it was a short jump from there to education reform and local politics.
While she dreamed of making a real positive change in her very own community, she knew there were definitely obstacles, mainly her insecurities. She often got so nervous before public speaking, that she’d get physically ill. Fortunately, most times, once she finally got over the stage fright, she’d have an outward appearance of grace and charisma, even though on the inside she’d be terrified. Len just hoped that after enough practice, this would change and she could grow more comfortable in front of a crowd.
She had high hopes for this, solely because of the realization that even just looking back to her childhood, she’d grown much more outgoing than she had been as a child. She was quiet, and unbearably shy. Her first grade teacher actually suggested having her tested for learning disabilities, and getting her into speech therapy, solely because she almost never spoke. Her mother knew what those tests would say, however, and that was that she was quite smart, advanced for her age, even, and that she was just quiet. It was hard not to be quiet in a home that was full of loud, strong women, when Len just felt that she never fully added to the conversation. Then, as a teenager in high school, while she was still not nearly as out-going as her siblings, she was able to speak up in class, and she had a rather solid group of friends, which was all she really felt she needed.
Things seemed to be going very well for the girl, she had her group of friends, she had her dreams of the Ivy League and even knew what she wanted to do after, but of course, things don’t always work out they way we want them to. Like many teenage girls, Len met her first love during high school. Things were wonderful at first, he was completely supportive of her dreams, and they were genuinely happy. Her friends liked him, as far as she knew everyone liked him, and why not? He was wonderful to her, and no one seemed happier for her than he did when she was accepted into Yale, her dream school. But they had plans to go to different schools, and it soon ended.
There was no way her mother would be able to afford any kind of college for her, so she worked hard to earn scholarships but even still it wouldn’t pay fully for Yale, however her abuela had put quite a bit of money away for all of her grandchildren’s education. That combined with her many scholarships, and some financial aid, she could get by with minimal loans. Except, shortly before Len was set to graduate, the woman suffered a heart attack, and lacked health insurance, leaving her with the only choice of using Valencia’s college fund on medical bills. Len was devastated. No amount of financial aid would cover the costs, they didn’t make nearly enough to get approved for loans that big, and just like it felt like everything she had worked so hard for was ripped away. Len was devastated. She didn’t understand how this could happen. She was overjoyed that her grandmother was okay, but she didn’t know what to do from there. She was forced to settle for a school that would offer her a full scholarship, and decided to go to California, hoping to get away and start fresh. She chose UCLA, as her flawless GPA and numerous extracurriculars, she was a dream student, and would be able to go without owing a dime later on.
As far as family went, Len loves her family unconditionally. While her father left before she was even born, and never bothered to try to come back or contact them, there was never really much for her to miss. Her mother worked endlessly to take care of her, her older siblings and younger siblings, and her abuela stepped in to help out whenever she could. She learned from a young age to work just as tirelessly for anything you wanted. It was where she got her work ethic when it came to school work. She was incredibly strong willed and hard working, and she liked it that way. Her family never had much, but everything they did have they earned. When her brother was born, it was really up to her and her siblings to take care of him, as her mother continued working just as hard as ever, and then again when her younger sister were born. When her older siblings were working or weren’t around, it fell to Len to care for him, and they have always been incredibly close. Len began tutoring as soon as she was old enough, bringing her baby siblings with her whenever she needed to watch them and tutor at the same time. And later in college, she had a job at all times, even while doing a full course load, sending money home every week to contribute. She didn’t know anything else but to work hard. She began waitressing, and then trained to bartend. As it brought her far better tips she began to lean more towards that side for the money, but the social aspect of it was a bit outside of her comfort zone.
She also got very into physical fitness in college, mostly as a means of self defense, she didn’t like walking back from late night classes, or to her car after closing a bar, so she started to take classes. Soon she had enrolled herself in classes to become a trainer. She has a huge passion for fitness. So when she saw the ad for the kingdom she applied for two jobs. Teaching workout classes, and personal training, and also for a digital marketing specialist position. Her degree wasn’t in marketing, it was in poli-sci and economics, but she’d certainly learned enough through both to qualify for the position. She was hired for both and she was thrilled. 
As far as love goes, after her high school boyfriend, it was a long time before she found anything serious again. She was 21 when she finally met a guy who she felt like she could commit to. She dated him for 4 years, and finally broke up when she realized he was getting ready to propose. He wanted to be serious, he wanted to be with her forever, and she suddenly realized she didn’t. It was shocking to have that realization, but she was glad she’d had it then and not when he was asking her to marry him. After that she stuck to mostly flings, just hooking up with people when she felt like it. Including one of her best friends who’d she met through the bar, and that’s how she plans to keep things for now.
THE LOPEZ FAMILY BACKGROUND
The Lopez family are not rich, and in fact grew up in one of the poorest towns in America. Maribel, whose second language is English, always struggled to find stable work with no qualifications and a very basic understanding of the English language, and never managed to hold down a relationship despite having a few sexual partners. A truck driver fell asleep at the wheel, barreling into Susan Slattery’s car and pushing it under a tractor trailer, killing her and critically injuring 12-year-old Matthew and 16-year-old Peter. Peter fractured his pelvis and eye socket, while Matthew suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, losing 80 percent of his blood.
Matthew’s father, Ed Slattery, was at work when he received the unimaginable phone call. Ed raced to Ohio to be with his sons, while friends and family in the Baltimore community held vigil and prayed. Matthew underwent brain surgery, and spent 30 days in an Akron hospital before being stabilized and transported to Johns Hopkins, and then to Kennedy Krieger’s inpatient pediatric rehabilitation unit.
NEVER ALONE
Matthew, who was a happy, exuberant 12-year-old before the accident, lay in an unconscious state. Matthew’s eyes were opening, but held a blank stare—he was not responding to his name or to pain. Brain scans showed he had damage to his brain stem, the part of the brain responsible for vital functions, such as breathing and heart regulation. His prognosis looked grim. But Ed never stopped believing that Matthew would recover, in large part because he knew he was in one of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the world. “Kennedy Krieger is the hope center of the universe,” he says.
Ed, who was the only parent now, had to take on the role of both mother and father for his sons while grieving for his wife and trying to help Matthew recover. He worried that Matthew would wake up alone and scared at a moment when he was at home with Peter. “The thought of Matthew waking up alone was unbearable,” says Ed. So family, friends, and neighbors rallied around, taking turns sitting with Matthew when Ed couldn’t be by his side. “Matthew was never alone, ever,” recalls Ed.
Slowly, Matthew began to show some progress, but even the smallest movement came only after herculean effort. At first he could move only his left index finger, and only slightly. “I would watch him trying to move his finger for minutes, and his finger would just quiver,” recalls Ed.
One of the pivotal moments early in his recovery came when doctors capped his tracheostomy tube to see if he had the ability to breathe unassisted. The seconds ticked by and Matthew began to breathe on his own, first one minute, then two, and when the timer hit five minutes, everyone clapped. Ed put his head down and sobbed. With the help of doctors, therapists, and sheer determination, Matthew was one step further on his path to recovery.
COMING HOME
When Matthew was stable enough to return home, the moment came for Ed to tell Matthew that his mother had died. He told Matthew how much his mother loved him and how proud of him she was. He held Matthew as he said the words no parent should have to utter to a child. Matthew couldn’t articulate his feelings, but he could still cry. His therapists took turns hugging him as the tears flowed.
At that point, Ed had no idea how much or how little progress Matthew would make. The only thing Ed was sure of was that Matthew still needed intense therapy. So when Matthew was ready to be discharged, he began outpatient therapy through Kennedy Krieger’s Specialized Transition Program (STP), spending up to six hours a day engaged in occupational, physical, and speech therapy, as well as education. This intense therapy helps repair the brain in a process known as neuroplasticity, in which the neurons in the brain begin forming new connections to replace the damaged ones.
STP fills a unique niche in rehabilitation from severe injuries; it provides treatment for patients who no longer require round-the-clock medical observation and therapy, but who still require intensive therapy before full return to the community.
“For patients like Matthew who have sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, returning home is often a catalyst for a burst of recovery,” explains Joan Carney, EdD, director of STP. “Being able to be in their home and with family every evening, yet still have the advantages of therapy-rich activity every day at STP for the continuation of their recovery, is often the perfect prescription.”
A TWINKLE IN HIS EYE
Matthew Slattery on bikeMatthew had always had a sense of humor, and his therapists were trying to use that as a way to reach him. His therapist blew raspberries at him, and Matthew laughed out loud—a beautiful sound to his father and his therapists. Soon, Ed began finding ways to tap into a 12-year-old boy’s sense of humor—an iPad app for bodily noises garnered huge belly laughs from Matthew. And being at home with his father and his brother Peter, who was healing well from his injuries, seemed to bolster Matthew’s spirits.
Matthew was beginning to respond to his environment, although it was unclear whether or not he could understand speech. But before long, Matthew could shake his head yes or no in response to a question, and he learned how to use an augmentative communication device. Ed could tell he was improving when he asked Matthew if he was a girl and Matthew got a twinkle in his eye, hit “yes,” and then laughed hysterically. The old Matthew was beginning to shine through.
“Matthew never lost his personality, and we’re so thankful for that,” says Ed. “He has always been funny, very, very bright, and spontaneous.”
Then came the day Ed had been hoping and waiting for since the accident. One February day when Ed asked Matthew, “Do you love your dad?” he answered, clear as day and much like any typical 12-year-old, “Yeah.”
“The day Matthew started talking was huge,” says Dr. Carney. “Everybody remembers that day—we were all incredibly excited.”
Therapists used a multitude of therapies with Matthew to improve his gross and fine motor skills, balance, self-care, coordination, cognitive understanding, eating, and communication. Physical therapists put Matthew in a gait trainer, a harness that holds the patient while moving his legs in a walking motion in an attempt to “wake up” muscle memory. Soon, he was walking up to eight feet with the gait trainer, and then up to 40 feet. His occupational therapists used robotic therapies to strengthen his hands, and soon he could move his entire left arm and most of his right arm. His speech therapists worked with him to gain control over his voice.
Matthew made amazing progress at STP, surpassing everyone’s expectations. After several months, he began attending Kennedy Krieger School at Fairmount while continuing his therapy part-time.
LIFE AS THERAPY
Matt and Dad riding bikeOutside of therapy, Ed tried to keep Matthew involved in as many activities as he could—camping with the Boy Scouts, biking on a two-person tandem bike, adapted sailing, and hanging out with friends. “My attitude is that Matthew can do whatever we imagine him doing,” says Ed. “You give them as many experiences as you can, never knowing which ones will resonate with them somehow.”
While dealing with the personal aftermath of losing his wife and nearly losing his son, Ed advocates for others who may find themselves in similar circumstances. He has testified for safety measures in the trucking industry and has made donations to the hospital in Akron where his sons received treatment, to the first responders who helped save Matthew’s life, and to Kennedy Krieger to help other patients like Matthew. He knows firsthand how much therapy is needed to help patients recover from severe injuries, and he wants to ensure that others in need have the same access to therapy.
Today, two years after the accident, Matthew, now 14, can sing and talk, do multiplication, play chess, write his name, draw, walk short distances, and go anywhere he wants in his power chair. He is working toward becoming an Eagle Scout, and participated with his father in a 130-mile bike ride with the Boy Scouts last summer.
He still faces major challenges every day—he struggles with everyday functions that others take for granted, like eating and drinking, getting dressed, walking, and talking. But for Ed, and the many people whose lives Matthew has touched, every day with Matthew is a gift.

Be Careful with Energy Practices
On my spiritual journey, I first encountered energy practices through Reiki. An aunt living in Ankara said to me, “I teach Reiki. It’s very easy to learn. Give me a million bucks, and I’ll teach it to you!” This was my first push toward Reiki, when I wondered what it actually was. Following this, I came across Reiki several times, but I still chose to keep my distance from it. In 2001, I created a mail group called sonsuzlukötesi (meaning beyond eternity), and in it, I brought together people interested in spiritual topics. I scanned for new members on ICQ every night. I met many great people, many of who are still my friends. One night, I met someone with the nickname “Rose for Quills.” She said she was a Reiki teacher. We chatted for a while, but I still wasn’t tempted to try Reiki. I was very fond of playing soccer on grass back then. I’d also been going to the gym all summer for bodybuilding, so I was fit and ready for the new season. However, on my way to my first match, I heard a cracking sound from my knee as I climbed onto the bus. I had injured myself just getting onto the bus. I shared this event with my mailing group, and a Reiki teacher suggested that I go over and let her look at it. A million conflicting thoughts went through my mind, but my inner voice told me to go. After all, her house was very close to mine, so I accepted her offer. I went to her place on a Saturday expecting to meet an older person, but two young bombshells opened the door, one blonde and the other brunette. They invited me in by saying, “Welcome, Hasan.” All my prejudices about Reiki flew out the window right then. This was the very first time I met face to face with my dear Reiki teacher Gülüm Omay and her student Reiki trainer, dear Tijen. Afterwards, Gülüm initiated me in Reiki Level 1. They then worked on my leg. As I left, they said, “You’re a student now, so I won’t charge you a fee.” Over the following days, months, and years, I gained so many wonderful friends in that house, in addition to dear Gülüm of course. I was at Gülüm’s house constantly, during which I met many people, but even more importantly than that, I learned so much about energy practices. Back then, these practices weren’t as widespread as they are today. For example, I remember when dear Koray, another of Gülüm’s students, said, “I’ve encountered a new energy called Ra-Sheba,” which is an energy that was very new to Turkey in those days. I think I was the first subject for it. They laid me down and tried out the symbols on me. I didn’t understand much of what was happening, but I liked the fact that it was related to Egypt. Those were the times when Ra-Sheba and similar energy practices were just being revealed to us. During my initiation into Reiki level 2, I saw images of beings who told me they were from another galaxy. They said to me, “The crystal energy net will be imposed on Earth, and with your permission, we’d like to work with you.” I did. There were no crystal children yet back then, although there was information on the indigo children that preceded them. They initiated me by placing me in some kind of a crystal. After that, I felt I could use crystal energy, but there was a group of healers surrounding me, and I was teaching them. I called them “The Pinks.” I announced this through my mailing group, and “The Pinks” became rather famous. Another activity I engaged in back then was seeing past lives by touching people. It came to a point where I could see the past lives of a person sitting next to me on the bus, as if I was reading a book. It was also a great way to get girls. I mean, it was so cool. Who could refuse someone that sees their past lives? But one day, I went too far. There were 75 people in a sonsuzlukötesi mail group meeting. I looked at the past lives of more than 20 friends in just two hours. At the end, I couldn’t even stand up straight. We were at the house of my dear friend Zeynep Sevil, whom I’d met through Gülüm. When they saw how I was, they both warned me, “Hasan, stop now! You don’t know what you’re doing!” The next day, Zeynep said to me, “Hasan, seeing past lives is not so special, but if you continue doing it without protecting yourself, your internal organs will change, and no one can help you after that. If you want to become a past-life healer, go and get some training before you start practicing. You definitely shouldn’t look at past lives just to chase some tail.” As she told me all this, I was literally shaking. Right there and then, I made a choice to work in the media rather than become a healer. I returned to Ankara, where I was so sick that I couldn’t leave my bed for three weeks. Neither medication or energy, or even The Pinks, could help me. My soul was continuously spewing up ash, the collected energies from all the past lives I’d looked at. It was a difficult period for me, and I decided to change things. I cut off my contact with The Pinks and focused on sonsuzlukotesi instead, followed by derKi. During this period, when I told Gülüm about The Pinks, she would just smile at me. She used to say, “Well, this is your experience, which you have to live yourself. If I were you, though, I wouldn’t hold on to The Pinks too tightly.” Gülüm’s path was that of classic Reiki, and she has never left that path to this day. That said, one valuable thing I learned from her is to always take energy practice very seriously and not talk about it with everyone I meet. We’ve been through so many experiences. I saw so many people coming to Gülüm for help, with many not even knowing what they’re were being initiated into. There were just so many things, and this made me cautious about the energy practices I had come across. For example, I met Begüm Güven Karaca back in 2012, and I gave several speeches at her center. For three years long, she urged me to practice Theta Healing with her. I felt able to completely trust her after three years, and only then could I start training with her. I shared its results with you several times. It was a similar situation with Reşat Güner. We wrote to each other and discussed it many times, but I began to learn how to practice Regression Therapy from him only after observing him for two years. My old friend Aycan Saroğlu mentioned the work of Güneş Tan several times, and dear Semavii told me about her as well, but I just waited. I didn’t know who she was or what she was doing. Friends whom I loved and trusted were referencing her, but this was only the first step, so I did some research to learn who she was. One night, Semavii said, “Come on, we’ll do a mini session with you,” and I understood where he was going with this. Following this,  I phoned a few more friends and asked for their opinions. Finally, I went to her home and had a face-to-face conversation. She told me all about herself, and I learned we came from the same region of Turkey. She told me about her education, and I learned about her processes. Eventually, I was ready to try her practice, and I was very pleased with it. In summary, why did I tell you all this? It’s a warning to be careful with energy practices! Do not surrender yourself before you are sure whom and what you’re working with and know their training history! Do not grasp at every energy you see! Be cautious! Just because the eye can’t see energy, it doesn’t mean it’s harmless. Much is happening, and you might experience unpleasant consequences in incompetent hands. That said, you may create many positive changes with the help of an expert, but with those who incorrectly call themselves experts, you might find yourself in a pickle. Without first doing some research, asking around, and looking into your soul, do not go into such practices. All said and done, though, energy practices are mostly healing practices. Physically, they are like medicinal supplements, and spiritually, they can help you to remove the barriers ahead of you. In competent hands, you might increase the speed and smoothness of your journey, but never forget this: No healer, master, trainer, or guide can walk your path for you. You are the one who must do everything. They can only guide you on your journey or help you to heal your wounds. It is your journey, so you are the one who must walk it! The masters, healers, and guides are people too, and just like you, they walk their own paths on their own journeys. They just share what they know with others and help them in other ways. On this path, everyone is responsible for their own journey… Everyone is responsible for their own choices… Everyone is responsible for themselves… But it’s okay to hold another’s hand now and then… In that sense, I’ve been very lucky in the many valuable friends I’ve met on my path. I’ve had many masters, but I’ve especially benefitted from their support during my first encounters with energy practices, their teachings, and the things they help me to gain. Where to Work as a Personal Trainer
Making the right decision about where to work means answering two questions:
What type of facility is most appealing to you?
What environment and opportunities will you find at an individual facility?
The second question involves three questions of its own:
Do you think you can get along with the manager?
What programs are in place to promote education?
What tools and systems does the job provide to help you grow as a trainer?
To figure those things out, your best tactic is simply to visit the place. Chat up the trainers and staff to get a sense of whether they like each other and enjoy working there. If you’re still unsure, use LinkedIn to find others who work there (or used to), and connect with them on social media to ask specific questions.
You also have to consider pay and benefits, of course. Bills don’t pay themselves. But you never want to sacrifice experience and education for money, especially at the front end of your career.
But that leaves the first question. I can’t just tell you where to go; that choice is yours. But I can lay out the options to help you decide.
These are the three most common opportunities for personal trainers early in their careers:
Commercial gym
Private studio
CrossFit-type facility
Those aren’t the only options, as you surely know. Personal trainers also work in corporate wellness centers and facilities that specialize in sports performance or physical therapy. But those places are unlikely to give new trainers their first job.
And where you start is important. Your first job lays the groundwork for your entire career. (No pressure.) The right first job gives you the building blocks you need for the career you want.
You’re the only one who knows what that looks like.

1. Commercial gym
Best for: the budding entrepreneur
This is where most personal trainers get their first job, and for good reason. You get clients right off the bat, along with access to all the equipment you need to train them. Because you’re new, no one expects you to be good, which means you’re allowed to ask questions and make mistakes (and learn from them).
Someone else takes care of accounting, marketing, and issues with individual members. While health benefits are increasingly rare in the fitness industry, some gyms still offer them, along with mentor programs and continuing education.
The base pay may not be great, but trainers are often paid on a sliding scale—anywhere from 40 to 66 percent of what the gym charges the client for a session. The more sessions you book each month, the higher the percentage you get to keep. That can be a lucrative arrangement for a motivated trainer with solid interpersonal skills.
Ambition may also be rewarded with sales bonuses, not to mention promotions. A commercial gym that’s part of a chain, or owned by a company with multiple facilities, can offer a clear, structured path to greater responsibility and bigger paychecks.

The drawbacks: You must follow the gym’s rules. You may have to wear a uniform, and adjust your training to accommodate policies—no chalk or barefoot training, for example.
You may also be asked to sign a noncompete agreement, forbidding you from taking your clients to another gym if you leave. And side gigs tend to be discouraged, unless you can show how they contribute to the gym’s bottom line.
My advice: Two things. First, earn your voice. Whatever big-box gym you land in, there will be aspects you don’t like. I worked in a commercial gym for 14 years. I hated the music, the disproportionately high ratio of isolation machines to squat racks, and the session-cost payment model.
But at commercial gyms, you earn your right to an opinion. Keep your head down and mouth shut, work hard, and build a solid reputation as a knowledgeable trainer. Then you can push back against the norm.
Second, once you establish yourself, work on becoming an intrapreneur. With a little ingenuity and a lot of hard work, it’s entirely possible to become independently successful while working at a commercial gym.
Take ownership of specific duties (I eventually took over medical referrals from all 30 of my gym’s locations), and find ways to expand your role that benefit the company. Offer to teach in-house continuing education courses. Or if your gym doesn’t have those, offer to set one up.

2. Private studio
Best for: the niche trainer
These smaller facilities tend to focus more on private instruction or small-group training.
Some rent space to experienced coaches who need a place to train their clients. Others hire trainers to work with their members, and then take a portion from each session (usually 30 to 50 percent). Because the price point tends to be higher, your take-home pay will likely exceed what you could make at a big-box gym.
Studios can charge more because they offer a better service in a better environment, and appeal to a more affluent, discerning clientele. You’ll often find hardwood floors, more specialized equipment, and fancier locker rooms. Because your clients will like training there, retention tends to be good.
Not all studios are high-end. Some specialize in niche markets: elite athletes, clinical populations, clients with obesity. In those places, you’ll be expected to develop knowledge specific to the clientele, and to deliver more individualized programs. If it’s a niche you want to focus on, great. If not, you may be better off at a commercial gym that gives you more diverse opportunities.
Education levels among the training staff can vary, from entry-level certifications to graduate degrees and beyond. Just keep in mind that your people skills may ultimately be more valuable than your credentials.
As your clients’ main point of contact, you’ll be expected to represent the brand. Compared with larger facilities, you’ll have higher accountability. But you may, on the flip side, also find more leeway to operate as you see fit.
The drawbacks: Because the advertising budget tends to be smaller, you have to work harder to acquire clients. You won’t have quite as much permission to mess up. And limited space can mean cramped quarters when the place is full.
My advice: Build relationships with everyone you can. Service delivery is paramount when the model is an intimate one. Like Jonathan Goodman says, people buy trainers, not training. That’s especially true here.
Final tip: Try to take advantage of any perks your facility may offer. Many provide in-service seminars and reimburse you for continuing education. You can’t underestimate the value of education.

3. CrossFit-type facility
Best for: the aspiring fitness coach
CrossFit boxes, and those with similar setups and offerings, haven’t always had the best reputation. Critics say the cost of entry is too low and the injury rate too high. Still, the overall education of trainers is improving, and the desire to retain clients has changed the onboarding and training strategies at many of them.
That’s good news for an entry-level personal trainer. Bare-bones, industrial-style training facilities continue to be popular. Their dedicated and enthusiastic clients, including a lot of weekend warriors, make your job easier. Most of them are looking to get their butts kicked, lose some fat, gain some muscle, and earn bragging rights by being able to do things others can’t.
Minimal equipment means more emphasis on creative programming, incorporating lots of body-weight movements.
Perhaps the best aspect: the camaraderie. The group environment emphasizes cooperation and mutual encouragement. It’s a good place to learn to be a great coach.
For those looking to open their own facility one day, it’s also a great model for keeping start-up and operating costs low. It can be quite lucrative if run well.
The drawbacks: You’re getting in long after CrossFit peaked as a cultural phenomenon. While the audience is still substantial, anyone with a basic certification and enough money for a licensing fee can open one up and compete directly for your clients. That’s why these facilities got that reputation I mentioned earlier.
Before taking the job, make sure the place has a solid onboarding program for new coaches to help you start off right. You really don’t want to lead a lot of people in a group workout until you’re sure you know what you’re doing.
My advice: If this is where you start, focus on what you can apply to future work at other types of facilities. How can you streamline your programs to avoid the bottlenecks that would slow you down in a commercial gym? What’s the best workout you can give a client with the least equipment, or in the smallest space?
And really, those points apply to any entry-level job for a personal trainer. You’re going to make mistakes. What matters is what you learn from them, and how you apply those lessons not just to your current job, but to future gigs as well.
Hard work, excellent service, and great relationships with clients are the keys to a great career in personal training, no matter where you start or where you end up.

Colorado Yoga Teacher Spotlight: Meet Brett Mehlman
It’s 6 a.m., and slivers of sunlight peep through the large, elongated windows of Brett Mehlman’s Denver-based studio apartment, greeting him as he begins his morning. A fresh glass of water is the first thing on his mind, followed by a guided meditation. As a busy yoga instructor, an established morning ritual is key for Brett. Preparing for his first client of the day, he concocts a blend of ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and skullcap for tea.
“The trick here, is to add coconut milk,” he says with a grin, walking across the plant-lined floor to the kitchen cupboard. “Coconut milk makes all the difference.”
Tea is only just part of the equation.
Ideally, his ultimate routine includes exercise, a bit of reading, maybe some journaling; topped off with a light, healthy breakfast.
He might alter it here and there. On some days, he’ll incorporate daily gratitude and affirmation practices. On others, a quick Spanish lesson.
One thing, however, is certainly clear: starting the day off right is what sets Brett up for success in the long run.
Standing at 5’8’’ with dark hair and an engaging smile, Brett began his personal yoga journey back in his early twenties while pursuing a business degree at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
“I was already a certified personal trainer at the time, with a strong interest in exercise and movement. In college, my curiosity was successfully piqued when I discovered that the rec center held relatively inexpensive eight-week yoga classes. I went in with the intention of learning more about ‘stretching.’”
But the realm of yoga had greater, unexpected plans for this determined young trainer.
Following a near-death experience at age twenty-two that required major abdominal surgery from navel to sternum, Brett was left with a destroyed core and chronic musculoskeletal pain. When multiple physical therapy visits failed to provide any substantial relief, he turned to both yoga and massage for healing.
From that point onward, his approach to health was forever changed. No longer a mere physical pursuit, Brett’s interest in yoga evolved to include the more subtle aspects of the practice—particularly meditation and breathwork.
Now, as a fulltime yoga instructor, licensed massage therapist, life coach, and personal trainer, Brett has accumulated nearly a decade’s-worth of teaching experience and certifications in multiple holistic areas of health and wellness. Successfully integrating both Eastern and Western traditions to his overall practice, those that know him well—especially his clients and students—would describe his guidance as strict, yet approachable…and not without a dash of good humor.
With an established personal brand and developing business concept in mind, Brett’s mission is straightforward: to make the world a better place by helping people achieve overall health and personal happiness in their lives. The following is a conversation I had with Brett.
WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE YOUR STUDENTS WILL CULTIVATE IN PRACTICING WITH YOU? WHAT DO YOU WANT THEM TO TAKE HOME?
Anyone can transform for the better. All change starts in the mind; visualize the life you wish to cultivate, then bring it into reality with small actions. Consistency over time will reap positive results. I remind my students on a daily basis to be at peace with where they’re at in the given moment, while also having the drive to push towards where they’d like to be.
Don’t take life too seriously. We are all tiny specks of dust in the grand scheme of the universe, so don’t waste your precious time constantly worrying. It’s okay to be a work in progress, just remember to always be in progress!
AS BOTH A YOGA TEACHER AND MASSAGE THERAPIST, DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY ON ACHIEVING OVERALL HEALTH AND WELLNESS.
Get the foundations down, and the body will harmonize in return.
It begins with sleep. This is, without a doubt, one of the master keys of health. It’s during deep sleep when the body rests, repairs, and restores itself. Not only does sleep affect your mood, it also enhances your energy levels. Get enough of it, and you’ll for sure be in tune with your circadian rhythm, and wake up feeling more energized.
But sleep is just one piece to the puzzle. From there, several other factors must also be considered:
1. Breathing
Breath is a crucial foundation for achieving overall wellness. We breathe about 23,000 breaths per day. If you’re breathing improperly, it can create tension and lead to higher stress levels. On the other hand, if you’re breathing correctly, you’ll notice a more even pattern of airflow. It will help calm the body, and give a subtle massage to the organs—great for digestive purposes! Breathwork truly is a small hinge that swings large doors.
2. Posture
When your body is in line with gravity, everything else become easier. If you make the conscious effort to sit upright, you’ll definitely have more energy throughout the day.
3. Nutrition
It’s all about balance. Everyone’s body is different, therefore it’s important to eat right for your type. Fast food can be an occasional treat. The bulk of what we eat should consist of fresh produce, which means an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables. My rule of thumb is that the closer something is to being alive when you eat it, the better it is for you. In addition, be sure to get plenty of healthy fats and good cholesterol in your system–this is absolutely essential for your body’s health.
One final note, pay attention to how you feel after eating. This is critical. You want to feel mentally and physically energized by the food you eat. Think of food as both fuel and medicine. If what you eat makes you feel sluggish, it might be due to eating too much or consuming ingredients that you possibly have a mild intolerance to. Listen to your body.
4. Thoughts
This is where meditation saves the day. Your thoughts affect your worldview and personal perspective. If you can practice overall awareness, and mindfully see the good out of a difficult situation, your entire outlook on life changes.
HOW DO YOU UTILIZE YOUR YOGA PRACTICE OFF THE MAT?
During my yoga practice, I strive to be fully aware of my body, its alignment, and its sensations. I incorporate this into my life by being present in the given moment, and out of my head as much I can throughout the day.
This cultivated presence is also directed towards my breathing.
Breath is an incredible tool for regulating our moods and any stress that may pop up. Utilizing slower, complete diaphragmatic inhales helps me keep calm and relaxed. In addition, mindfulness prevents that all-too-common inner critic from being overactive. I try to let go of negative thought patterns, and instead think of things that will inspire and motivate me to be my best self, as I go about all necessary tasks.
So, in a nutshell: presence, breathing, and awareness.
NAME THREE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DEEPLY IMPACTED YOUR LIFE.
First and foremost, my older sister, Kimberly. She’s absolutely incredible. Not only has she successfully gone on to raise a child after getting pregnant at a young age, she simultaneously pursued college—all the way up to receiving her Ph.D. Now married with three more children, she works a fulltime job for the government, runs her own nonprofit to help fight human trafficking, and is the author of two published books. It’s simply inspiring to witness, and for me as a single guy, it lights a fire under me to be all that I can in reaching my highest potential.
Next would be one of my personal mentors, Paul Chek. Oh, where to even start with this guy…he’s an absolute genius! I’ve learned so much from him through his videos and blogs over the years. And as of recent, I’ve been lucky enough to study with him in person through his holistic lifestyle coaching program. He brings a plethora of holistic knowledge to the table, and does an incredible job at harmonizing different modalities; successfully mixing them into one big teaching. A true role model to the core, he practices what he preaches; I emulate this as much as I can in my own life.

My long-term goal is to run holistic wellness retreats with an established center to organize them. But in the meantime, I plan on putting out more digital content in order to make what is commonly viewed as high-end holistic coaching services available to populations that don’t necessarily have the resources to pay for private sessions.
In regards to massage therapy and yoga, I’ll be developing educational classes in those particular realms, as well as continue to connect and collaborate with practitioners in a variety of other holistic fields. My hopes are that my own personal learning and growth will directly translate into what my company, Tuneus LLC, offers in the future.

Gym Rats Are at Risk of This Once-Obscure Kidney Injury
All Jared Shamburger wanted was to do stronger. The 17 -year-old’s father and brother had been bodybuilding for years, and Shamburger felt he had to” catch up to them and get as big as them ,” he told ABC1 3. To that expiration, he spent 90 minutes last-place month filching values at his Houston area gym. When he got home, he was sore–extremely absces.” Everything hurt ,” he announced.” It hurt to the signature. It was swollen .” When the tendernes hadn’t de-escalate a few hours later, his mother, Judy Shamburger, proliferated concerned.” The mama endure in me kind of took over ,” she replied,” and I called the pediatrician and read,’ I actually foresee my lad has rhabdo .'” Shamburger’s mother was referencing rhabdomyolysis, an obscure muscle disease that has become increasingly common in recent years. But rhabdomyolysis–or rhabdo for short–didn’t use to be a condition that impacted low-level lifters; it attacked elite jocks: ultramarathoners, CrossFitters, Division I athletics squads. And it’s become increasingly common as daily gymgoers are pushing through intense workouts. Unlike Jared Shamburger, Alexis Feszko knew exactly what rhabdo was when she got it. For Feszko, a certified personal trainer are stationed in Pennsylvania, all it took was a programme of bicep and tricep workouts that she described as not” too heavy at all .” But still, she told The Daily Beast,” Within 24 hours, I was in agonizing suffering … my biceps and triceps had swollen astronomically, like tripled, quadrupled in length. It felt like my bones were going to break and my muscles were going to explode .” The biology behind Feszko and Shamburger’s pain–and rhabdo itself–is relatively simple. When an athlete wreaks beyond their restrictions, their muscle fibers die, David Geier, an orthopedist and sports medicine specialist are stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, told The Daily Beast.” The breakdown commodities of muscle get into the bloodstream. And little amounts of this is gonna be OK. But a good deal, that’s when you get organ damage–and it’s usually kidney damage .” What Geier describes isn’t the only form of rhabdo. Tragic accidents–like automobile hurtles, or descending from a high level–can cause the same type of muscle death, and the same consequences. The subset afflicting Shamburger and Fezsko is known as exertional rhabdo, or rhabdo that’s caused by exercise. Like Shamburger and Feszko, most exertional rhabdo cases suffer from extreme muscle soreness and expand, as well as muscle weakness and dark red or chocolate-brown urine. Treatment is simple–an IV drip and agony medication–and often extremely effective. Most patients return to full health after brief stays in the hospital( although Feszko announces she contracted rhabdo four more goes, without employing ). It was an injury that hit high-intensity competitors, like the 22 high school football players who got it in 2010, the 13 Iowa State football players who got it in 2011, or the six Ohio State lacrosse actors who got it in 2012, all after grueling mandatory exercising regimens. But with the recent rise in high-intensity endeavors like CrossFit and SoulCycle–and the artistic ethos that everyone should look like a bodybuilder–it’s now becoming a much more common trouble. In 2017, the academic research administrator of the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Queensland, Australia, published an explainer on the relationship between rhabdo and high-intensity workout. In reviewing the cases that presented in his infirmary, he discovered that between 2012 and 2017, there had been a” 20 -fold increase in cases compared to the previous five years .” Between 2010 and 2014, there used to be 29 rhabdo subjects at NewYork-Presbyterian alone. ” It felt like my bones were going to break and my muscles were going to explode .” div> — Alexis Feszko These findings, as well as a series of higher-profile contingencies, have led countless to condemn the high-intensity fitness first-class that have explosion onto the fitness incident in recent years. Last time, The New York Times wrote an article connecting rhabdo to invent world-class, particularly for first-time attendees. Eric Roberston, conductor of Kaiser Permanente Northern California Graduate Physical Therapy Education, wrote a interminable article in which he linked rhabdo with CrossFit. In the essay, entitled “CrossFit’s Dirty Little Secret,” he relayed the story of a peer who contracted rhabdo after a regular CrossFit workout, attributing her knowledge to the” elitist, move yourself to the limit culture of the punish ,” and mocked the boast for designing a grotesque comedian cartoon called ” Uncle Rhabdo .” But Joe Cannon, training exercises scientist, personal teach, and scribe of Rhabdo: The Scary Side Effect of Exercise You’ve Never Heard Of –one of the only diaries about rhabdo and practise on the market–thinks their own problems is much bigger than the dogma of all persons gym or fitness number. The real trouble, Cannon suggests, is an overwhelming lack of education that spans gyms, personal tutors, and members of the public. ” Most fitness formations do not cover rhabdo in their textbooks ,” he told The Daily Beast, although he memoes on his website that CrossFit is actually one of the few organizations that does include rhabdo in their trainer’s manual( PDF ), devoting at least nine of 117 pages to the topic. ” I teach personal teaches. I’ve worked with thousands of them over the years ,” Cannon added.” I can tell you that most of them have never heard of rhabdo .” He also notes that 30 -minute exercisings, often standards and norms in first-time personal training sessions, exert pressure on instructors to succeed their clients too hard-handed, too quickly.” They’re crushing a lot of vigour in a short time period ,” he responded.” And that’s really the thing with rhabdo. Geier recommends a same stage of careful. ” While you’re working out, if you’re worried something’s going on, you look for more than exactly regular muscle soreness ,” he enunciated.” Like,’ My muscles are really hurting, they’re starting to growth .’ You don’t try to push through that. You stop working out. If it goes away, great, then come back another daytime. If it’s not to be good pretty quickly, go to an emergency room .” This plan might not promise the same solutions as a high-weight, high-rep, high-intensity workout. But as more beings are starting to learn, it’s far better to go slow than to get rhabdo. Stop Stretching?! Hypermobility and Finding Stability. Prevent Injury + Get Rid Of Pain!
Can too much stretching be bad for you? Learn the dangers of Hypermobility and prevent painful injuries with these helpful tips.
Holy Hypermobile Shoulders!!
Some people are bendy and some people are stiff. Being bendy can be a major concern (especially for women) and often hypermobile people aren’t aware of their own mobility. I want to provide some information about how you can both identify if you’re hypermobile (AKA bendy), and provide some suggestions for developing greater stability for less pain and greater results. 
Lets Talk About Hypermobility…
Any medical information included is based on a personal experience. For questions or concerns regarding health or diagnoses, please consult a doctor or medical professional. 
People with hypermobility are advised to build strength to the muscles and avoid stretching as this can cause long-term damage to the joints.
One of the biggest mistakes people make in fitness is assuming everyone should train exactly the same way. Obviously, this line of thinking is incorrect for a variety of reasons, but perhaps none stands out as more important to appreciate as joint hypermobility.
Hypermobility, exercise and injury prevention
The crazy thing is, many people who are bendy (aka Hypermobile) don’t even KNOW that they are! So they get random injuries and experience pain without ever knowing how to properly train their bodies.
  Being a hypermobile person myself, I’ve gotten a lot of random injuries from being TOO bendy (high hamstring tendonitis was the WORST one!). I wish I had known MORE about Hypermobility when I was younger. But I’ve learned a LOT over the years on how to control my hypermobility and train smarter. Most importantly, I have to constantly remind myself NOT to keep stretching an already excessive loose joint and NOT to go to full end range of motion in exercise. In other words, training with hypermobility is more about what you don’t do than what you do actually do.
SMART training as a Hypermobile person equals building body awareness and strong muscles. Confused still? You are not alone. Join the millions of people who don’t know anything about mobility and still subscribe to the belief that stretching needs to be done daily for optimal health. But then again, people still believe in 80’s aerobics and hours of cardio…. and look where thats getting them = out of shape, injured, and a whole bunch of nowhere. Sounds frustrating? It is. That’s why I want to shine a little bit of light for you and give you some resources to help you understand further.
  Are you Hypermobile?
You see, some individuals have more congenital laxity than others. This essentially means their ligaments (which connect bone to bone) have a bit more give to them. As a result, they can have substantially more flexibility because of the lack of passive stiffness. The active restraints — muscles and tendons — have to work harder to create stability at the hypermobile joints.
Unfortunately, we’re naturally drawn to doing what we’re good at doing, and that’s why you see a lot of really bendy, loose-jointed folks at yoga and Pilates classes when a well-designed strength training program (to create good stiffness) probably would offer quicker benefits. That’s not to say that yoga and Pilates aren’t amazing; I’m just saying that these initiatives ought to be biased toward drills that promote building stability within the joint range of motion that’s already present (as opposed to trying to become even more flexible).
Excessive laxity (bendy-ness) creates instability and this makes joints vulnerable not only to injury but increased wear and tear. Hypermobility predisposes individuals up to a host of not so fun musculoskeletal issues, ranging from ankle sprains to shoulder subluxations to stress fractures to hernias to early osteoarthritis. 
I know this concept may feel difficult to grasp (it was for me too!). But if you are even slightly hypermobile somewhere in your body, learning to understand how to train your unique body and create STABILITY will benefit you in so many ways. 
Of course, it’s important to actually be able to identify if you’re hypermobile. How do you know if you are?
Top signs of Hypermobility:
Increased Flexibility – ‘double-jointedness
Skin – extra soft, silky-smooth skin that is very thin, easily bruises and is slow to heal
Frequent Injury – accident prone and clumsy, due to decreased proprioception (the body’s sense of its own movement through 3D space)
Anesthesia Problems – anesthetics (such as novicaine and lignocaine) take longer to take affect and ware off faster than normal
Joint Pain – frequent joint pain which does not respond to typical treatments such as ice, rest and anti-inflammatory medication, can be brought about suddenly without any direct injury or trauma and lasts longer than normal muscle inflammation
You can also try a Beighton Hypermobility test to assess if this may be an issue for you.
Many trainers mistakenly assume all individuals are incredibly tight and need to stretch until the cows come home. This is NOT a good training plan for a hypermobile person! Stretch them and they get worse. Build stability and they will thrive. The proof is in the pudding – Hypermobile folks will experience LESS pain through strength (speaking from experience here!). Individuals with hypermobility can reduce their risk of developing injury and train effectively by doing the following…
Training Plan for the hypermobile to prevent injury and improve performance
Improve muscle tone. Exercise that helps build muscle tone will assist in reducing the demands on hypermobile joints. Muscles help generate, decelerate and dissipate force from movement sparing the ligaments. Good muscle tone can also create some stability around joints.
Movement Education. Any movement regardless of its nature, be it flexibility, strength or conditioning work should be performed accurately with control and awareness. Focusing on correct engagement of the muscles and initiating good movement patterns will help protect vulnerable joints.
If you are hypermobile, building STRENGTH and teaching yourself HOW to use the RIGHT muscles with proper movement patterns will allow you to achieve your goals quicker and with fewer injuries.

I was just looking for something new. I love LA, but working in a bar and training the same clients all the time…I needed a change. When I heard about this, I jumped on the idea. I’ve always wanted to travel, and this seemed like a great way to do that without becoming totally broke.
BIOGRAPHY.
Born 6 weeks early, Valencia gave her mother quite the scare, due to stress from her father leaving when she was just 6 weeks from her due date, the woman went into labor far too early, and by some kind of miracle, Valencia was born without a health issue in sight. Sure, she had to stay in the hospital longer, was much smaller than most babies, and had to have constant check ups as she grew, but truthfully, she was perfect. Meant to be a late summer baby, but born at the end of June, it was clear from the start that there wasn’t much that was going to stand in Valencia Lopez’s way in life.
Valencia had always felt the pressure of being perfect. She knew that she had to do well in school, had to get into an ivy league school, and had to fulfill her own unrealistic expectations. And she enjoyed the pressure. She found books, and school fascinating, and it was rare to find her without her nose in a book. In fact, it was her love for school so much that drew her into tutoring. She was determined to help other students feel the same love and passion that she felt. And more than anything, she loved the sense of pride she got whenever someone she tutored finally began to understand their coursework. And she was stubborn, she could never give up on someone she was tutoring, she’d explain things 300 different ways until there was finally a way for them to understand.
It was this passion that had originally given her the idea to become a teacher, however, that dream changed quickly. While she thought being a teacher was a fantastic path, and she could see herself being undeniably happy in that role, there was something else tugging at her attention. Underprivileged schools. Schools that could not afford the tools that she’d always dreamed to have at her disposal growing up; schools that could not even afford books in some cases. After spending her years at just such a school, she was drawn into charities to try and help raise money for educational programs. And it was a short jump from there to education reform and local politics.
While she dreamed of making a real positive change in her very own community, she knew there were definitely obstacles, mainly her insecurities. She often got so nervous before public speaking, that she’d get physically ill. Fortunately, most times, once she finally got over the stage fright, she’d have an outward appearance of grace and charisma, even though on the inside she’d be terrified. Len just hoped that after enough practice, this would change and she could grow more comfortable in front of a crowd.
She had high hopes for this, solely because of the realization that even just looking back to her childhood, she’d grown much more outgoing than she had been as a child. She was quiet, and unbearably shy. Her first grade teacher actually suggested having her tested for learning disabilities, and getting her into speech therapy, solely because she almost never spoke. Her mother knew what those tests would say, however, and that was that she was quite smart, advanced for her age, even, and that she was just quiet. It was hard not to be quiet in a home that was full of loud, strong women, when Len just felt that she never fully added to the conversation. Then, as a teenager in high school, while she was still not nearly as out-going as her siblings, she was able to speak up in class, and she had a rather solid group of friends, which was all she really felt she needed.
Things seemed to be going very well for the girl, she had her group of friends, she had her dreams of the Ivy League and even knew what she wanted to do after, but of course, things don’t always work out they way we want them to. Like many teenage girls, Len met her first love during high school. Things were wonderful at first, he was completely supportive of her dreams, and they were genuinely happy. Her friends liked him, as far as she knew everyone liked him, and why not? He was wonderful to her, and no one seemed happier for her than he did when she was accepted into Yale, her dream school. But they had plans to go to different schools, and it soon ended.
There was no way her mother would be able to afford any kind of college for her, so she worked hard to earn scholarships but even still it wouldn’t pay fully for Yale, however her abuela had put quite a bit of money away for all of her grandchildren’s education. That combined with her many scholarships, and some financial aid, she could get by with minimal loans. Except, shortly before Len was set to graduate, the woman suffered a heart attack, and lacked health insurance, leaving her with the only choice of using Valencia’s college fund on medical bills. Len was devastated. No amount of financial aid would cover the costs, they didn’t make nearly enough to get approved for loans that big, and just like it felt like everything she had worked so hard for was ripped away. Len was devastated. She didn’t understand how this could happen. She was overjoyed that her grandmother was okay, but she didn’t know what to do from there. She was forced to settle for a school that would offer her a full scholarship, and decided to go to California, hoping to get away and start fresh. She chose UCLA, as her flawless GPA and numerous extracurriculars, she was a dream student, and would be able to go without owing a dime later on.
As far as family went, Len loves her family unconditionally. While her father left before she was even born, and never bothered to try to come back or contact them, there was never really much for her to miss. Her mother worked endlessly to take care of her, her older siblings and younger siblings, and her abuela stepped in to help out whenever she could. She learned from a young age to work just as tirelessly for anything you wanted. It was where she got her work ethic when it came to school work. She was incredibly strong willed and hard working, and she liked it that way. Her family never had much, but everything they did have they earned. When her brother was born, it was really up to her and her siblings to take care of him, as her mother continued working just as hard as ever, and then again when her younger sister were born. When her older siblings were working or weren’t around, it fell to Len to care for him, and they have always been incredibly close. Len began tutoring as soon as she was old enough, bringing her baby siblings with her whenever she needed to watch them and tutor at the same time. And later in college, she had a job at all times, even while doing a full course load, sending money home every week to contribute. She didn’t know anything else but to work hard. She began waitressing, and then trained to bartend. As it brought her far better tips she began to lean more towards that side for the money, but the social aspect of it was a bit outside of her comfort zone.
She also got very into physical fitness in college, mostly as a means of self defense, she didn’t like walking back from late night classes, or to her car after closing a bar, so she started to take classes. Soon she had enrolled herself in classes to become a trainer. She has a huge passion for fitness. So when she saw the ad for the kingdom she applied for two jobs. Teaching workout classes, and personal training, and also for a digital marketing specialist position. Her degree wasn’t in marketing, it was in poli-sci and economics, but she’d certainly learned enough through both to qualify for the position. She was hired for both and she was thrilled. 
As far as love goes, after her high school boyfriend, it was a long time before she found anything serious again. She was 21 when she finally met a guy who she felt like she could commit to. She dated him for 4 years, and finally broke up when she realized he was getting ready to propose. He wanted to be serious, he wanted to be with her forever, and she suddenly realized she didn’t. It was shocking to have that realization, but she was glad she’d had it then and not when he was asking her to marry him. After that she stuck to mostly flings, just hooking up with people when she felt like it. Including one of her best friends who’d she met through the bar, and that’s how she plans to keep things for now.

After surviving a horrific car crash Matthew's recovery from traumatic brain injury
After surviving a horrific car crash, Matthew Slattery defied expectations in his recovery from traumatic brain injury with the help of the brain injury rehabilitation program at Kennedy Krieger Institute.
In an instant, the Slattery family was shattered.
Susan Slattery and her two sons, Matthew and Peter, were on their way home from visiting family in Ohio on a sunny August day in 2010 when tragedy struck. A truck driver fell asleep at the wheel, barreling into Susan Slattery’s car and pushing it under a tractor trailer, killing her and critically injuring 12-year-old Matthew and 16-year-old Peter. Peter fractured his pelvis and eye socket, while Matthew suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, losing 80 percent of his blood.
Matthew’s father, Ed Slattery, was at work when he received the unimaginable phone call. Ed raced to Ohio to be with his sons, while friends and family in the Baltimore community held vigil and prayed. Matthew underwent brain surgery, and spent 30 days in an Akron hospital before being stabilized and transported to Johns Hopkins, and then to Kennedy Krieger Institute’s inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit. Never Alone
Matthew, who was a happy, exuberant 12-year-old before the accident, lay in an unconscious state. Matthew’s eyes were opening, but held a blank stare—he was not responding to his name or to pain. Brain scans showed he had damage to his brain stem, the part of the brain responsible for vital functions, such as breathing and heart regulation. His prognosis looked grim. But Ed never stopped believing that Matthew would recover, in large part because he knew he was in one of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the world. “Kennedy Krieger is the hope center of the universe,” he says.
Ed, who was the only parent now, had to take on the role of both mother and father for his sons while grieving for his wife and trying to help Matthew recover. He worried that Matthew would wake up alone and scared at a moment when he was at home with Peter. “The thought of Matthew waking up alone was unbearable,” says Ed. So family, friends, and neighbors rallied around, taking turns sitting with Matthew when Ed couldn’t be by his side. “Matthew was never alone, ever,” recalls Ed.
Slowly, Matthew began to show some progress, but even the smallest movement came only after herculean effort. At first he could move only his left index finger, and only slightly. “I would watch him trying to move his finger for minutes, and his finger would just quiver,” recalls Ed.
One of the pivotal moments early in his recovery came when doctors capped his tracheostomy tube to see if he had the ability to breathe unassisted. The seconds ticked by and Matthew began to breathe on his own, first one minute, then two, and when the timer hit five minutes, everyone clapped. Ed put his head down and sobbed. With the help of doctors, therapists, and sheer determination, Matthew was one step further on his path to recovery. Coming Home
When Matthew was stable enough to return home, the moment came for Ed to tell Matthew that his mother had died. He told Matthew how much his mother loved him and how proud of him she was. He held Matthew as he said the words no parent should have to utter to a child. Matthew couldn’t articulate his feelings, but he could still cry. His therapists took turns hugging him as the tears flowed.
At that point, Ed had no idea how much or how little progress Matthew would make. The only thing Ed was sure of was that Matthew still needed intense therapy. So when Matthew was ready to be discharged, he began outpatient therapy through Kennedy Krieger’s Specialized Transition Program (STP)—the Institute’s day hospital—spending up to six hours a day engaged in occupational,physical, and speech therapy, as well as education. This intense therapy helps repair the brain in a process known as neuroplasticity, in which the neurons in the brain begin forming new connections to replace the damaged ones.
The Specialized Transition Program fills a unique niche in rehabilitation from severe injuries; it provides treatment for patients who no longer require round-the-clock medical observation and therapy, but who still require intensive therapy before full return to the community.
“For patients like Matthew who have sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, returning home is often a catalyst for a burst of recovery,” explains Joan Carney, EdD, director of the Specialized Transition Program. “Being able to be in their home and with family every evening, yet still have the advantages of therapy-rich activity every day at STP for the continuation of their recovery, is often the perfect prescription.” A Twinkle in His Eye
Matthew had always had a sense of humor, and his therapists were trying to use that as a way to reach him. His therapist blew raspberries at him, and Matthew laughed out loud—a beautiful sound to his father and his therapists. Soon, Ed began finding ways to tap into a 12-year-old boy’s sense of humor—an iPad app for bodily noises garnered huge belly laughs from Matthew. And being at home with his father and his brother Peter, who was healing well from his injuries, seemed to bolster Matthew’s spirits.
Matthew was beginning to respond to his environment, although it was unclear whether or not he could understand speech. But before long, Matthew could shake his head yes or no in response to a question, and he learned how to use an augmentative communication device. Ed could tell he was improving when he asked Matthew if he was a girl and Matthew got a twinkle in his eye, hit “yes,” and then laughed hysterically. The old Matthew was beginning to shine through.
“Matthew never lost his personality, and we’re so thankful for that,” says Ed. “He has always been funny, very, very bright, and spontaneous.”
Then came the day Ed had been hoping and waiting for since the accident. One February day when Ed asked Matthew, “Do you love your dad?” he answered, clear as day and much like any typical 12-year-old, “Yeah.”
“The day Matthew started talking was huge,” says Dr. Carney. “Everybody remembers that day—we were all incredibly excited.”
Therapists used a multitude of therapies with Matthew to improve his gross and fine motor skills, balance, self-care, coordination, cognitive understanding, eating, and communication. Physical therapists put Matthew in a gait trainer, a harness that holds the patient while moving his legs in a walking motion in an attempt to “wake up” muscle memory. Soon, he was walking up to eight feet with the gait trainer, and then up to 40 feet. His occupational therapists used robotic therapies to strengthen his hands, and soon he could move his entire left arm and most of his right arm. His speech therapists worked with him to gain control over his voice.
Matthew made amazing progress at the Specialized Transition Program, surpassing everyone’s expectations. After several months, he began attending school at Kennedy Krieger’s Fairmount campus while continuing his therapy part-time. Life as Therapy
Outside of therapy, Ed tried to keep Matthew involved in as many activities as he could—camping with the Boy Scouts, biking on a two-person tandem bike, adapted sailing, and hanging out with friends. “My attitude is that Matthew can do whatever we imagine him doing,” says Ed. “You give them as many experiences as you can, never knowing which ones will resonate with them somehow.”
While dealing with the personal aftermath of losing his wife and nearly losing his son, Ed advocates for others who may find themselves in similar circumstances. He has testified for safety measures in the trucking industry and has made donations to the hospital in Akron where his sons received treatment, to the first responders who helped save Matthew’s life, and to Kennedy Krieger to help other patients like Matthew. He knows firsthand how much therapy is needed to help patients recover from severe injuries, and he wants to ensure that others in need have the same access to therapy.
Today, two years after the accident, Matthew, now 14, can sing and talk, do multiplication, play chess, write his name, draw, walk short distances, and go anywhere he wants in his power chair. He is working toward becoming an Eagle Scout, and participated with his father in a 130-mile bike ride with the Boy Scouts last summer.
He still faces major challenges every day—he struggles with everyday functions that others take for granted, like eating and drinking, getting dressed, walking, and talking. But for Ed, and the many people whose lives Matthew has touched, every day with Matthew is a gift.
For patients like Matthew who have sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, returning home is often a catalyst for a burst of recovery. Being able to be in their home and with family every evening, yet still have the advantages of therapy-rich activity every day at STP for the continuation of their recovery is often the perfect prescription.

Do Trainers Need a College Degree to Be Successful?
College isn’t for everyone. I see that every day at my job, where I train young college grads to be personal trainers.
Some of them just want to train people, and could easily have done so without spending four years on campus and loading themselves down with tens of thousands of dollars of debt.
For those people, college is more of an anchor than a ladder.
But at the same time, I absolutely love my job. I’m an exercise physiologist in a hospital-run fitness setting, and I couldn’t have it without a degree in exercise science.
So how do you decide if college is the right choice for you? What are the benefits of a formal education for a personal trainer, compared to the cost? What are the risks of not spending that time in a classroom, compared to the benefits of going straight to work and gaining experience while earning money instead of borrowing it?
Let’s start with the easiest question, and then get into the tougher ones.
Who Needs a College Degree?
If you’re interested in physical therapy, occupational therapy, or exercise physiology, your decision’s already been made. Nobody wants to see a self-taught physical therapist after knee replacement. You need a degree.
Likewise, if you want to train high-level athletes in a college or pro setting, you may need to be a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS), which requires a college degree. (It doesn’t matter what the degree is in; you can be an English major, as long as you can pass the test.)
The requirements for certification as an athletic trainer (ATC) are even higher.
Some gyms require both a CSCS and a degree in exercise science, but most don’t. For example, when my editor asked Eric Cressey, cofounder of Cressey Sports Performance, if he requires his coaches and interns to have a degree, he replied with an emphatic “Nope! I can teach them competency for our business better than any college curriculum can.”
So if you can get in the door at a place like CSP, where they train a long list of pro and amateur baseball players (including both of 2017’s Cy Young Award winners, Corey Kluber and Max Scherzer), how important can college be?
The Benefits of a College Education
School forces you to discipline yourself. How many of us would voluntarily subject ourselves to the kind of study it takes to write a paper on the biomechanics of bench pressing? If you want passing grades, you have to do that, and much more.
College also offers you perspectives you might not find on your own. You’ll have professors from all walks of life, with different opinions on nutrition, biomechanics, programming, and just about anything else that’s open to interpretation.
You may not agree with them, and you may want to forget everything they taught you the moment you pass their exams. But that doesn’t mean there’s no value in their perspective. Just hearing their side of the story, and learning how they arrived at it, will help you develop a cohesive training philosophy of your own.
Can you find a variety of opinions outside the classroom? Undoubtedly. Talk to 20 different trainers and you may get 20 different but equally passionate lectures on why their approach to the squat is the best approach. You may get that many in a single CrossFit box.
Where school is different is that these diverse views come from people who’ve spent decades of their lives practicing, studying, and writing rigorous research papers on these topics. They aren’t random people in the gym or on Facebook.
The Downside of College
You have to start with the cost.
College has gotten incredibly expensive in the U.S., for multiple reasons. Colleges now offer more amenities to entice students; states subsidize a lower percentage of each student’s tuition; federal grants are less generous; and college administrative costs have skyrocketed.
Combine rising costs with lower wages for the kind of work students typically get, and the upshot is that many of us graduate with crippling debt—a problem driven, in part, by how lucrative those loans are for the lenders.
By contrast, if you start training clients straight out of high school, and pay for your certs and continuing education as you go, you can have four years’ worth of experience, and no outstanding loans, by the time your peers graduate from college with zero experience and piles of debt. That’s if your peers manage to graduate in just four years. Many need more time.
This comparison makes two assumptions that may not apply to you:
That someone can start work as a trainer straight out of college. It’s rarely that easy or straightforward to get a job without experience or credentials.
That someone who goes to college will graduate without experience. Many train clients while attending school.
Is College Worth It?
Personally, I wouldn’t have learned what I know about anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics if I hadn’t taken those classes. School forced me to spend hours studying those subjects, with a combination of classroom lectures, textbooks, software, and hands-on work in a lab. I don’t know how I could replicate all that without college.
I also finished without debt, thanks to scholarships and working my hiney off. I started working 25-plus hours a week my very first week at college, and kept it up for all four years. Every dollar I earned helped pay for school. At the same time, I turned scholarship hunting into a hobby, and applied for everything I was eligible for.
Even with all that effort, I graduated with zero money in the bank. The only thing worse than being broke is being broke with loans to pay back for the next 10 years.
But let’s talk about you. If you’re on the fence, how do you decide if college is the right choice?
Start by answering these questions.
Why Do You Want to Go to College?
If I’m being honest, I’ll say it was because my parents’ generation hammered into my head the idea that I’d be a nobody without a degree. I’d end up living in a cardboard box behind Kmart. (Not even Walmart; those spots would be reserved for a higher class of homeless people.)
That’s obviously not true.
Getting a degree does open doors, but so does hard work and a willingness to work your way up from the bottom. And there’s never been an education requirement for starting a business and making it on your own.
Even with a degree, good jobs are tough to find. Nobody’s hanging around on campus offering six-figure salaries to exercise-science majors.
If you want to make that kind of money as a trainer—and people do it all the time—it’s going to take a lot of work, with or without a degree.
Will You Find Impediments to Success Without a Degree?
As I said earlier, there are companies that won’t hire people without that line on their résumés.
In my experience, though, there aren’t as many as we’ve been led to believe. More often, owners of gyms and training studios are looking for employees who’re knowledgeable, dependable, and charismatic. A degree might help you get an interview, but those qualities are more likely to get you hired and help you thrive.
Do You Know Enough to Succeed?
I’m not talking about what you think you know, or what you assume to be true because it’s worked for you. I’m talking about factual knowledge.
When trainers get together, the conversation often turns to the low bar for entry to our field. Literally anyone can take an online course and call himself a “personal trainer.” It doesn’t matter if they have any lifting experience, or if they know how to program, or if they know the first thing about coaching.
Some of those people present themselves as experts, and may even believe it. The less knowledge they have, the easier it is to convince themselves that they’ve somehow become Super Trainers overnight. The more confident they are, the easier it is to lure gullible clients who can’t tell the difference.
There are no shortcuts in our field. Proficiency takes time, study, and practice.
Can You See Through BS, Including Your Own?
Sometimes, when I’m talking to trainers without formal education, I notice how easily they fall for pseudo-science. They’ll claim fad diets, bogus supplements, and stupid training programs are panaceas not just for fitness-related matters, but for all sorts of health issues that no knowledgeable trainer would ever claim are within our scope of practice.
In every case, I see a direct link from their lack of education—from not having a basic understanding of the scientific method—to their gullibility.
Does this apply to everyone without a degree? Absolutely not. And there are plenty of college graduates who fall for pseudo-science as well.
All I’m saying is that it’s easier to embrace the absurd if you don’t have the background to understand why it’s absurd.
How to Self-Educate
1. Ask Questions
When I started training I felt like I needed to know it all, that people expected that of me, but that I really didn’t have a clue. The temptation was to fake it till I made it. I quickly realized I had it all wrong.
People really don’t expect you to know it all. They know you’re young. They know you’re new to the game. More often than not, people who know more than you will be happy to answer your questions if you’re willing to ask them.
There’s a lot to learn from wiser trainers, physical therapists, registered dietitians, and other experienced professionals, especially if their viewpoints are different from yours.
I pepper the physical therapists at work with questions all the time. As I see it, if I want to better understand a particular issue, I can either pretend I know more than I do, or fill the gap in my knowledge by asking someone who knows.
All it costs is two minutes of imaginary humiliation, which goes away the moment you realize your colleague respects you more for asking.
2. Read
At the end of this article I include a list of books that I’ve found helpful over the years. Only one is an actual textbook. The rest range from mostly pictures to mostly type, with varying degrees of readability.
Beyond my list, I encourage you to read up on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, programming, pain, recovery, mobility, injury prevention—anything and everything that might help you become a better trainer.
Most important, I believe, are nutrition and programming. In my experience, entry-level fitness pros are most likely to trip themselves up with stupid programs and straight-up dumb nutrition advice. Even with a college degree you probably don’t know enough about either subject.
3. Stay Up to Date on the Science
Maybe reading scientific studies is the best way you know to fall asleep. That’s fine. I understand. They’re not for everybody. But if you’re a trainer, the information within those studies is for you. Thankfully, there are other ways to access it.

4. Be a Good Employee
I’ve worked with people, and you probably have as well, who are incredibly knowledgeable in their field, but suck at what they do.
Who cares if you know more than everybody else in the gym if nobody wants to work with you? If you’re surly, full of yourself, and bad at conversation, clients aren’t going to want to train with you, your colleagues won’t bother helping you, and your manager will eventually give up on you.
Every chance to learn, grow, and become a better trainer will be cut off if you don’t go out of your way to keep those opportunities alive.
Six More Ways to Succeed Without a Degree
At this point I’ve talked about “success” in general terms, like being good at your job. Now I want to talk about success as it relates specifically to financial security. These six practices, in my experience, are crucial for trainers, especially early in their careers.
1. Camp at your gym. When you’re starting a new job at a facility you need to be there as much as possible. Most financially successful trainers I’ve known worked incredibly long hours in their formative years. You want to make sure the members recognize you, and the staff sees you and notices how hard you’re working.
2. Lift at your gym. This follows from being at your gym all day. Where else would you work out? But it’s more than a practical necessity. Your workouts are sometimes your best marketing tool. Members need to see that you train hard, and practice what you preach. Your coworkers need to see that you know what you’re doing.
3. Get in good with your managers. Nobody likes a suck-up, but you do need to be on good terms with your boss for an extremely practical reason: The majority of personal-training clients come through the manager’s office. Whether it starts with a phone call or a drop-in visit, someone who’s interested in personal training usually expects the manager to recommend an appropriate trainer. You want your name to be at or near the top of the list.
4. Establish an online presence. Think of it this way: If you wanted to find a product or service near you, where would you go? Whatever comes to mind—Yellow Pages, Yelp, Google, Angie’s List—that’s where you need to be. You also need a website and a consistent presence on the social media that your clients are most likely to use. Personal and professional Facebook pages are the bare minimum. You need to show prospective clients that you’re a pro, that your clients like you, and that you’re worth the money.
5. Establish an absent presence at your gym. You can’t literally be at your gym all day, every day. That’s why you need your presence to be felt when you’re not there. The goal is what marketers refer to as top of mind awareness—TOMA for short. You can do this through brochures, bulletin boards, handouts, daily joke boards, or whatever else your gym allows.
6. Offer seminars. As Dean Somerset recommends in this article, take advantage of any opportunity to present information to any audience that will have you. If your gym has an in-service program, get into the mix. Do seminars in the community, or at local or regional fitness conferences. Talk about any subject in which you have substantially more expertise than your audience. Do this often enough and competently enough, and you’ll raise your profile not just in your gym, but in your community, and perhaps in the industry as well.
What’s Your Call?
The decision to go to college, or to finish your degree if you’re already there, or to go on to get a master’s or a major credential that involves time and money, is a tough one. It fills even the calmest person with anxiety. It’s supposed to be hard. If you’re not playing ping-pong in your head with all the pros and cons you aren’t taking it seriously enough.
I can’t claim to have seen it all, much less know it all, but I hope I’ve given you some tools to help you make that decision, or to help someone you know figure out the best path to success in our industry.
