AHiT Analysis: What Does Snatcher Think of Vanessa?
For my first write-up on A Hat in Time, I've decided to go with a topic that I think is very interesting due to its ambiguity, and that I've seen some pretty wildly different takes on: What does Snatcher think of Vanessa? This will be an analysis of what I believe to be most likely based on all of the evidence I've been able to identify.
[This post will cover the base game and the Seal the Deal DLC. The canon status of Vanessa’s Curse is dubious, but I don’t think it necessarily contradicts what I’m talking about here. If there’s interest I can go over it in another post.]
In the base game, Snatcher does not talk about or directly acknowledge Vanessa a single time. His contract instructs Hat Kid to go to the manor, but doesn't mention Vanessa at all.
You would think there just isn’t enough information for a conclusion in that case, but I think what exists is actually pretty illuminating.
In Chapter 1's storybook Time Rift, the Mafia Man explains how it was created: he was hit by a falling Time Piece, and the rift was created from his memories.
Tumblr media
The Tale of Queen Vanessa involves two characters, so it could feasibly have been created from either (or both) of their memories. However, I believe it was created from Snatcher's.
The physical location of the rift is in the ruined area behind Snatcher's tree house, practically on the opposite side of the Subcon Woods map from Vanessa's manor. Environmental details in the level itself are suggestive of Snatcher, with things like the thorny vines, armchair, rug, and potion bottles appearing. Conversely, no assets from Vanessa's manor are present.
Tumblr media
Despite this, the book is, by its title, about Vanessa, and is illustrated with heavy focus on her, while the prince is in the background in most pages he appears on.
Tumblr media
The first pages go out of their way to establish Vanessa as a kind person. She and the prince are happily in love, and she's beloved by the children who would later become the Dwellers and Subconites when the kingdom freezes. In his memories, there’s no indication anything was wrong with their relationship, even though diary entries in the manor show her behavior towards the prince had been controlling well before the incident depicted in the book. Snatcher remembers Vanessa and his relationship with her fondly.
Tumblr media
Even though the book is made from Snatcher's memories, it first shows a scene where the prince appears to be seeing the florist, with huge emphasis on how heartbroken Vanessa is, and then reveals that this wasn't the case. Snatcher doesn't think the misunderstanding was unreasonable on Vanessa's behalf; the framing of the sequence legitimizes her interpretation of it by showing it from her perspective first.
Tumblr media
Snatcher seems to believe he deeply hurt Vanessa, and views her becoming cursed as a tragedy arising from a simple and avoidable misunderstanding. Vanessa wrote about chaining him in one of her diary entries, meaning his death was at least partly premeditated, but from his perspective, the events depicted were totally incidental. Even in the frames where he’s being taken away, Vanessa crying is still in the foreground. The last two pages parallel each other, suggesting that what happened to Vanessa isn’t any less terrible than what happened to him.
Snatcher appears nowhere in Chapter 3 Act 4; the closest he comes to acknowledging Vanessa is sending a Subconite to tell Hat Kid she isn’t allowed to use her hats. This was likely done for gameplay reasons, like the Ice Hat interfering with stealth gameplay and the Sprint Hat making it easier to outrun Vanessa if the player is spotted, but it’s still an in-character decision by Snatcher.
This is one of two times he limits Hat Kid’s ability to access her hats, the other being in his boss fight. In this case, he wants Hat Kid to retrieve the Time Piece from the attic, so it’s strange he would make it harder for her. I can think of two reasons:
Snatcher just doesn’t want Hat Kid to know anything about him and is trying to limit her use of the Dweller Mask, which reveals secrets. As it’s a mask, by technicality this is pointless and she can use it anyway.
Snatcher doesn’t want Hat Kid to hurt Vanessa. He doesn’t take her umbrella away, but he doesn’t take it in his own boss fight, either.
As Snatcher doesn’t talk about Vanessa at all otherwise, and she only appears in one level, this is all the information in the base game.
In Death Wish mode, Snatcher never sends Hat Kid back to the manor, but he has four pieces of idle dialogue that reference Vanessa, although he never mentions her specifically by name.
"You know, they always say love is a warm feeling... But in my experience it's been positively chilling."
"You might think the embrace of death is the coldest thing there is, but I can tell you from experience... it's not."
"Ah, you should have seen her back in the day. Like dynamite with a laser beam, you know."
"We all have a soulmate - supposedly. I mean, I know I do. She's waiting for me! I don't see anyone waiting for you, though."
The first two are similar. They’re both jokes (if you could call them that) about his death, and seem to have a bitter tone to them, but they’re a bit ambiguous, particularly the second one. It sounds like he’s saying Vanessa is colder than death, but the snow coming in through the window in the second to last storybook page suggests he froze to death due to Vanessa’s magic, so is he really referring to her here? It’s unclear.
The third one, just in case you didn’t know, is a reference to a Queen song about a call girl. Snatcher mentions his ex four times in the entire game and one of those times is to tell us how hot she was. There’s no ironic or sarcastic undertone here. He still thinks this. Moving on.
In the last one, though, he explicitly calls her his soulmate and acknowledges she’s still looking for him. The line isn’t read in a way that particularly suggests he’s being sarcastic about it, either. As a matter of fact, he’s jokingly telling Hat Kid she might not have a soulmate, in contrast to him.
Due to the limited evidence available and the ambiguity of his Death Wish dialogue, I don’t think other interpretations are unreasonable, but the bulk of evidence suggests that Snatcher doesn’t hate Vanessa: he cares about and misses her, to the extent that the storybook about her made from his own unconscious memories doesn’t acknowledge any of the things she wrote about in her diary.
Final verdict:

Well now I have to request a drabble where Hat Kid learns about bush cat, saves it, and reunites Snatcher with his cat.
Thank you for the request!
Pets
Drunk Snatcher had been fun until Hat Kid had asked him if he’d ever had any pets. The answer was yes; back when he was alive, he’d had a beloved kitty named Lucky who’d vanished under mysterious circumstances. In hindsight, Vanessa was the suspected culprit especially since a stray cat he’d adopted had had a similar fate. After dying though, he’d had various animals, mostly cats but a couple dogs and even a parrot! Which had all been fun to hear about until he’d brought up his latest pet; a bushcat named Morgana who was too adventurous for his own good and had ended up disappearing somewhere around Vanessa’s Manor.
Too drunk to care about his image, Snatcher had been openly emotionally distraught about it. His poor kitty was probably frozen, the worst way to die, according to him. He’d been inconsolable and so drunk he could barely even be understood. Unable to comfort him, Hat Kid had eventually just left him curled up in a drunken stupor in his big reading hollow. He’d been too out of it to even notice her leaving.
That’s what brought her sneaking back to the manor. She was pretty sure she’d seen a frozen bushcat when she’d been in there last time. It had to be Snatcher’s kitty Morgana, right? Poor thing. She might not be able to do anything for him but there was something she could try that might work. He was her BFF and because of Bow she’d grown to love cats so she was going to try it. First, she had to get the cat though.
Just like last time, the doors to the cellar were unlocked, allowing her easy entry. She crept in, closing the door behind her.
In the cellar, she paused by the wall with dangling rusty chains hanging off it. Looking it with the dweller’s mask activated would reveal the outline of person who’d been chained there many, many years ago. She wasn’t going to do that this time though because unlike the first time she’d been down here, she now knew the story behind that wall and its imprint. So now it just made her feel… uncomfortable.
After a couple seconds, she shook it off and ran off towards the stairs. At the top, she stopped to press her ear to the door and listened. … There was silence on the other side. Which didn’t mean Vanessa wasn’t there, she’d certainly surprised Hat Kid with her sudden presence last time. There was no way to know for sure if the coast was clear though so… she opened the door a bit and poked her head out.
She glanced side to side and… no Vanessa but she did spot the frozen bushcat. It was right by the frozen over front door. After one more glance down the hall the other way, Hat Kid stepped out and jogged over to it, as fast as she could go without using her hats – there had to be a reason Snatcher had included ‘no hat abilities’ as part of his contract about the manor, now wasn’t the time to learn what that reason might be especially since it had been important enough that he’d sent a Subconite down to remind her of it so it had to be bad.
Morgana, the bushcat, looked like he’d been hissing when he’d suffered the unfortunate fate of being frozen. His back was arched, the leaves on it standing up, his tail up and puffed out. Poor thing! Touching him made her regret not wearing gloves because he was freezing! Too late to do anything about it now though, she’d just have to suck it up.
She carefully scooped up and ran back down the hall to the cellar door. Down the stairs she went, around and back up and outside. Wow, a quick and clean getaway, that was new. Vanessa should’ve appeared solely to add drama and make a more exciting story with higher stakes. But apparently today’s adventure wasn’t to be the perilous kind. The focus was on saving the bushcat cat anyway though so it was fine.
Shivering, Hat Kid banished those thoughts and pulled out her phone to beam herself and the frozen Morgana back up to the ship. In her room, she placed Morgana on her desk, pushing stuff off to make room for him. Then, using the sprint bow Snatcher had made for her, she ran out and to the central room, up the ladder and to the Time Piece vault. She grabbed five and ran back to her room.
Using them like this wasn’t allowed, for good reason too. But she was a professional and it was just one cat so it would probably be fine. Besides, reversing time for one small thing was less dangerous than proper time travel, everyone knew that so it wasn’t even that big of a rule she was breaking. And if no one ever found out she wouldn’t get in trouble. … She could probably tell Bow though because Bow would totally advocate for using the Time Pieces inappropriately if it meant bringing a kittycat back to life.
***
Snatcher had never been blackout drunk before. He’d always made a point not to because being drunk interfered with his studies. So he’d never been more than mildly hungover before. Now though, it was like he was making up for the last three hundred plus years of not drinking in one go.
His head hurt and he felt sick. He didn’t even have a stomach, how could he feel sick? Party of him wanted to go back to the blissful alcohol fueled oblivion his mind had arisen from a few hours ago. It had almost been like sleeping. Too bad the end result was this.
What had even happened yesterday? Hat Kid had showed up at some point after he’d started singing. They’d eventually ended up watching a movie… two movies? He didn’t really remember for sure. He’d undoubtedly embarrassed himself though because he’d always been a chatty and often emotional drunk. So hopefully Hat Kid wouldn’t show up today, or anytime soon but especially today. If she did, he might have to…
“Snatcher!”
Speak of the devil. He turned his head to see her standing in the door of his hollow. He hadn’t noticed her approach because he was feeling too miserable to pay much attention to his surroundings.
“You feeling okay? Can ghosts get hungover?” she asked.
He hadn’t thought so before but… “Yes.”
“Oof. Is there anything I can do to help? Like get you a glass or water or something? I heard eating toast helps. I’ve never been hungover though so I don’t know.”
“Leave me alone.” He was not in the mood for this. If only he had a bed he could lie down in. Ugh.
“Hmm… normally I would but I have something important to show you. And it should make you feel better so…”
“No, kid, please no. Not right now.” He couldn’t handle her antics right now. “Please leave me alone.”
She pulled out her phone. Good, that meant she was going to beam herself back up to her ship and then he’d be… She beamed him up too, putting them in her room.
He groaned. Before he could scold her or beg her to leave him the alone, he didn’t know which, a loud meow filled the room, coming from under the pillow pile. It wasn’t just any meow either, it was the distinct meow of a bushcat; a rare breed. He twisted around to watch it scramble out of the pile and… run towards him.
It wasn’t just any old bushcat, it was Morgana! How was the even possible? He’d disappeared somewhere around the manor, months ago now, which meant he’d probably been caught by Vanessa, resulting in a gruesome fate. But… apparently not?
Snatcher picked him up of course, lifting him to cradle against his chest. He started purring as Snatcher pet him, even nuzzling his mane a little. It was a dream come true.
He turned back to face Hat Kid who was smiling at him. “This is my cat. Where’d you find him?”
“Uh… the manor, where you said he’d be,” she replied. He didn’t remember saying anything about him to her but well, he’d just been black out drunk for a while so that probably explained it. “He was hiding in the cellar, living off rats and mice, too scared to come out and he can’t open the cellar doors so he was trapped. I saved him though and brought him back to you. That’s my important surprise.”
Something about that didn’t seem quite right but… Snatcher wasn’t going to question it right now. “Uh… thanks.”
“You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help. Feel free to chill with him in the pillow pool until your hangover fades.”
Snatcher grunted in response instead of saying another ‘thank you’. He was totally going to take her up on that offer though. He could use it and… well, he’d thought Morgana dead by Vanessa’s hand, he needed some time to adjust to that not being the case and just cuddle his beloved pet for a while.
For this request event.

Hey, you know how I tried to restart Fallout 4 properly around my birthday with a new Victor save? Yeah, uh, ran into a few issues with crashes and whatnot and had to start again! Fortunately, after much fiddling and poking and whatnot, I seem to have finally gotten myself a save that’s at least somewhat stable, so this here should be my final Victor Sole Survivor to go through the game with. Allow me to go through some of the pertinent points of my playthrough with you:
Appearance: Yeah, I had to redo him again -- at least this time I’m a bit happier with the eye spacing. He’s always going to look rather weird simply because I’m trying to translate a Tim Burton character into flesh, but I think I did a pretty good job under the circumstances!
...As for his fashion sense, he found the chestpiece and whatnot in a suitcase by Sanctuary, and the hat gives him +1 Intelligence and thus is giving me a bit more experience for his early quests. He’s not here to look good, he’s here to level up.
Stats: I ended up having to tweak his SPECIAL, mostly because I forgot just how many points you get at the beginning, and because I wanted to pivot slightly with how I designed his build. Here’s what he started out with:
Strength: 3
Perception: 3
Endurance: 7
Charisma: 2
Intelligence: 7
Agility: 4
Luck: 2
He’s still a high Endurance/Intelligence build, but I’ve decided that Agility is probably going to be his third “main” stat, because perks like “Moving Target” (harder to hit when you’re sprinting) make sense for him. (I mean, dodging like crazy was how he survived so long against Barkis!) I’ve already boosted it twice -- once with the You’re SPECIAL! book that you can find in Shaun’s room, and once through a level-up. I’ve also boosted his Perception thanks to the bobblehead in the Museum of Freedom. As for perks, he’s currently level 5, so I have the following:
Scrapper Level 1 (scavenge more uncommon components from scrapping things)
Gun Nut Level 1 (basic gun mods)
Armorer Level 1 (basic armor mods)
Given Victor’s whole “thing” in this universe is that he’s something of a tinkerer and good at modding things, this felt appropriate. :p
Mods: Because it’s not recommended to play without them! Certainly not without the fixes. . . Anyway, my complete mod list as of now is below, if you’re curious. I did try to vaguely group them into “these mods are part of the same category and/or go together,” but it’s not perfect. Still, if you see anything you find interesting, feel free to go to the link and check it out!
Fallout 4 Script Extender (https://f4se.silverlock.org/): Allows for script changes, enables certain other mods and serves as my game launcher through Vortex
Achievements Mod Enabler (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/15639): Enables achievements in a modded game; requires manual install (extract files into Fallout 4 folder)
Mod Configuration Menu (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/21497/): Adds a menu for configuring compatible mods; uses F4SE
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4598): General bugfixes and small improvements
Crafting Highlight Fix (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/27479): Removes the crafting “highlights” overlay so you can actually see your items while crafting; uses F4SE and requires MCM (to adjust things like how power armor pieces are highlighted)
Elevator Buttons Fix (Contraptions) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20664): Fixes floating elevator buttons from Contraptions (buttons can appear miles from the actual control panel)
Rusty Face Fix (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/31028): Fixes the rusty face glitch that may occur with the PC and NPCs (turning faces brown)
Nuka-World Bottle Scenery Fix (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/17853): Fixes the giant bottles that can sometimes spawn in Nuka World instead of the regular-sized models, completely obscuring the game world
No Aggro Impact Landing (Power Armor) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9019): Stops friendly characters getting aggroed if you jump from a great height and land near them in Power Armor
Vault 81 Molerat Disease Immunity with Power Armor and Hazmat (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/5646): Stops you getting infected with the Molerat Disease if you're wearing full power armor (chance of infection goes up with each missing piece of armor), or if your companion gets bit; lesser chance of infection if you're wearing a hazmat suit
CryoFreez Fix (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10000): Fixes the bug where, if an enemy dies as a result of the Cryolater or other cryo-based weapons, they will respawn in a weird “dead” state with no AI
Cattle Feeders Immersively Filled (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/11998): Two files; first adds a filled water trough for brahmin to use, second fills the vanilla feed trough with plants
Worthwhile Caps Stashes (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/23464): Increases the amount of caps in stash and have them contain other junk items; also makes the stash tin itself a junk item
Piper Interview Restored (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/21829): Restores some cut questions post Piper’s interview about your pre-war life
Dumpster Diving (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/33474): Adds new containers to open dumpsters with new and amusing junk to collect
More Grind-Free Game Settings (from Thuggyfied – A Fallout 4 Mod List) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/41435): Removes the need to get “Local Leader” Rank 2 to make crafting benches; quest markers display from five times further away; followers no longer auto-attack non-hostile Radstags; settlers run to the summoning bell; Jet doesn’t show up in pre-War coolers and containers (just Vault 95); pipe weapons no longer show up in Pre-War safes or trunks; ability to craft a “Jetpack Ring” at the chem station (I mainly got this for the first two items)
Useful Pulse and Cryo Explosives 1.1b (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/24848): Tweaks the cryo grenade’s damage output and fixes the “dead enemy AI respawn bug” for cryo grenades; tweaks how the pulse grenade works, making it affect robots and turrets more strongly and removing damage to organic enemies (though the explosion can still stagger them); also changes the crafting recipes
Wasteland Survival Guide 5 - More Map Markers (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/26367): Changes Wasteland Survival Guide #5 (available in Gorski Cabin) to mark not only Diamond City, but also Goodneighbor, the Glowing Sea, Boston Airport, and Quincy
Strong Back Improved – Weightless Equipped Apparel (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/17361): Improves the “Strong Back” perk to first halve the weight of worn apparel, then make it entirely weightless, and give more carry capacity out of Power Armor
Diamond City Plus (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/19293): Updates Diamond City with new shacks and interiors to the lower stands (including an arcade and a laundry!), along with new NPCs to populate them; also adds a proper farm with brahmin and chickens by the mutfuit plants
Commonwealth Wilderness Overhaul (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/41008): Adds lots of little scenes, objects, and creatures (including rad rabbits, rad chickens, and wolves) to the Commonwealth Wilderness to fill it out and make it more interesting
Nuka World Open Season Extend II -- Assignable Factions - Recruitable NPCs (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/47209): Allows you, post- the “Open Season” quest, to attract settlers to Nuka-World who can then be sent to regular settlements, and populate the parks and main market area with more traders, or various faction NPCs! (So if you really want the Minutemen to hold Nuka World after you gun everybody down, you can use this – though if you want them to come and HELP you gun everybody down, you need a different mod)
Flashy(JoeR) - Advanced Needs 2 - Customizable Survival Mode (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/40440): A customizable “survival mode” that allows you to play with a character who needs to eat, drink, and sleep periodically without necessarily dealing with some of Survival Mode’s other stuff (namely, the lack of fast travel in my case). Comes with expansions for being a playable ghoul, food spoilage, and other activities if you’re into that, and a patch for “Campsite – Simple Wasteland Camping” so you can use the two together.
Sunshine Tidings – No Ghoul and No Corpse (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/47044): Will eventually remove ghoul and human corpses from Sunshine; assigns Professor Goodfeels protected status if he hasn't already been disabled
Croup Manor Waterfront Extended (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/47144): Adds another chunk to Croup Manor's building area so you can actually access the water on the nearby beach for purifiers and whatnot
CWSS Redux V4 – Craftable Working Showers Sinks Baths Toilets Urinals Kitchens Etc (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/14326): Adds craftable, usable bathroom equipment and some kitchen equipment in a separate workshop menu so the Sole Survivor, companions, and settlers can go to the toilet, shower, and have pretty kitchens
Vault-Tec Workshop Overhaul Redux (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/43643): Fixes some errors with the Vault-Tec DLC items for Vault 88 and adds newer, better versions for some other items (e.g., better lights, in three variations depending on computer specs)
Wearable Backpacks and Pouches (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/3258): Adds a backpack workbench and a variety of upgradable backpacks to the game (three files – standard, ballistic weave addon, power armor capacity addon)
Campsite – Simple Wasteland Camping (and HD Sleeping Bags) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/11734): Adds a book to Sanctuary (the root cellar) that allows you to make camping gear at the chem station and set up camp in the Commonwealth whenever you want
The Mobile Mechanic – Portable Workbenches and Junk Scrapping (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/18262/): Allows you to make a portable, customizable workbench for scrapping junk and in-game crafting anywhere
Atelier – Paint and sculpt (Unsupported) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/36485): Allows you to make and mix paint, paint pictures (for the "Well Rested" XP bonus), and work on a sculpture; also has settler-ready versions to increase happiness in settlements. Unsupported and glitchy ("Well Rested" perk sound will play incessantly if you try to paint, with the animation popping up when you disengage from the easel – keeping this mainly for the look of the thing for Victor’s house)
Fallout Instrument Pack (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/46604): Adds four playable instruments to the game, along with a small (and unfortunately bit glitchy) quest to unlock the ability to craft them; also has two new instrument-themed weapons

Fine Dining (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/33128): Adds a “Fine Dining” section to the cooking menu with six new recipes, with strong effects that require a (reusable) steel plate as well as the food; also adds milk and cheese as items to be found in the world
Culinary Masterpieces – Useful Food (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/16055): Adds a “Culinary Masterpieces” section to the cooking menu with new recipes, and the ability to plant tarberries, hubflower, bloodleaf, and rice (after buying it from the Abernathys)
Apple Trees 3.2 (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/40388): Adds an apple and pear orchard to the game near Vault 111, and a “Fruit Recipes” section to the cooking menu for apple and pear-based food; also you can grow apples and pears for food in settlements

Tales From The Commonwealth Visual Fixes (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/43974): Patch to fix some of the broken precombines and visual bugs from TFTC
Tales From The Commonwealth – FaceGen Data (For PhysOp or Vanilla) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/45148): Patch to help provide face generation data for TFTC; vanilla file used
We Are The Minutemen (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/6443): Overhauls the Minutemen, giving Preston a new outfit, making patrols more common and more powerful as you level up, giving you a command table to make Minutemen, and cools down the frequency of radiant quests
Better Companions – No Conflicts (Accuracy Version) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/24233): Improves companions – in particular, making them more accurate and better at sneaking
Settler and Companion Dialogue Overhaul (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/41785): Increases the variety of companion lines while adventuring; gives certain companions their own radiant quests; gives settlers more variety in what they say to you while visiting settlements (acknowledging you as Minutemen General, complaining less)
Realistic Conversations Fallout 4 (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/32514): Makes conversations between NPCs more realistic, adds variety
Settlers Of The Commonwealth (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/8704): Adds unique new settlers to the Commonwealth that you can recruit
Level 4 Merchants Improved (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/40747): Puts all the level 4 merchants you can find and recruit in the Dugout Inn for easier location; also assigns protected status to certain ones that might otherwise easily die (like the Vault-Tec Rep)
Squirrels of the Commonwealth (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20027): Adds a variety of (surprisingly tough) squirrels; using the “docile” version that adds Garbage Squirrels but makes most squirrels run away if you shoot them
True Storms – Wasteland Edition (Thunder-Rain-Weather Redone) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4472): Improved weather, with more intense thunderstorms and whatnot; also has files for earlier sunsets, compatibility with Far Harbor and Nuka World, and (if you want, I didn’t) more dangerous Far Harbor fogs and Glowing Sea
Atomic Radio (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/8704): New radio station with original radio shows and commercials
Where I Am In The Game: Given Victor’s only level five, you’ve probably guessed I’ve only just started -- and you’d be right! Victor’s about five days into his adventures in the Commonwealth, and has spent that time mainly cleaning up Sanctuary and the Red Rocket, meeting Dogmeat and Preston, killing raiders, and molotoving and machine-gunning a Deathclaw to death. I’ve completed Out of Time and When Freedom Calls for quests, and I’m currently working on Sanctuary before moving onto The First Step. Next playsession, Victor and Codsworth are going to go visit the apple orchard on the other side of Vault 111 and get some apples for everyone! And probably fight a bear! :D What, the gang needs food, and I want to give them more variety than gourds and melons.
What Comes Next: While I hope to actually start the main plot a lot sooner than I did in my original attempt at playing, we’re definitely doing some Minutemen stuff first, plus exploring the general area around Sanctuary so I can pick up that “double meat” magazine. Think of it as Victor getting his hand in as he tries to figure out how to survive in this brave new world.

A Second Chance - Part 4
This is a reupload of the previous chapter 4, it wasn't showing up in the tags for some reason...
Will be adding in the tag list in a moment! As always, thank you to the lovely @ozmav
“What on Earth were you thinking, Alfred? That girl is in there with valuables, she broke in here!” Damian cried out exasperated. No wonder the light was on, she must’ve been snooping around, Damian thought bitterly.
“She is a guest here, Young Master Damian, and that box belongs to her. I invited her here myself, and I offered her an invitation to stay for as long as she needs. Her home life is...not suitable for her at this moment,” Alfred reprimanded, trailing off at the end. “I understand your concerns but her father is my cousin, and I expect a thorough apology to my niece. She’s family to me, so I ask that you do not behave so ill mannered towards her again.” Alfred gestured towards the living room, but Damian just glared at the girl sitting there. He tugged on Titus's leash and swiftly left the room altogether. Alfred stood there for a moment, before sighing and entering the living room. Marinette whipped her head around at the sound of footsteps, before sighing out of relief at the sight of Alfred.
"I apologize for the behavior of the Young Master, he has some behavioral issues that Master Bruce tends to turn a blind eye too. I can speak to him-"
"Absolutely not. I understand why he sees me as a threat. I'm a total stranger who just showed up in his home, I get it. I'm not angry...just shaken up right now," Marinette explained, cutting him off. Alfred nodded.
"Head upstairs to your room, it's at the second floor, the 3rd room to the right. It's the first hallway you see at the 2nd flight of stairs," Alfred directed. "The bedroom light should be on, and a pair of sleepwear will be left on the bed." Marinette once again enveloped him in a hug.
"I can't thank you enough for this, thank you so, so much..."
He hugged her back for a moment before pointing towards the staircase at the end of the hallway. Marinette nodded and made her way over.
~~~~~~\(°¬°)/~~~~~~
Marinette walked down the dark corridor before stopping at the third door. She opened up the door to be greeted with a large room. There was a large window showing the full moon, with a few candles lit around the room. A pair of black pajamas were laying on the large, fancy bed. The walls were a dark and scary gray, and Marinette took notice to the dust beginning to form at the bookshelf. She set down the box at the desk and glanced out the window. Tikki silently nuzzled into her cheek tiredly, before floating towards the end of the bed and quietly nuzzling up to the blanket, falling fast asleep.
Marinette got changed quickly, taking care not to mess up her bandages covering her arms and torso.
She was about to blow out her candles as she looked out the window, before noticing a dark hooded figure make his over the buildings, sprinting towards the manor. Marinette's heart raced wildly as she quickly ran out the door, about to alert Alfred. Tikki woke up with a start at the sound, hearing the loud sound of doors being swung open. They both backed away from the main entrance, hiding behind the corner.
That's when they saw him.
A tall man with a black mask and a large black cape draping over him. He had a neon yellow symbol of a bat on his chest, and a matching utility belt. Marinette was about to run in there, before seeing the same kid from before angrily walk over there, followed by Alfred. Marinette froze as they argued.
"Greetings Master Bruce-"
"Father, Alfred decided to invite some weird girl to the Manor and I'm fairly sure she's trying to steal-"
Wait...his father?
"Absolutely not! I will not tolerate you speaking so ill about her-"
"She's making Titus feel unsafe-"
"You're making HER feel unsafe-"
"Enough. Why did you call me over here, Alfred?"
"But-"
"My cousin’s daughter came here from Paris seeking help. There's a war going on in Paris right now, about the Miraculous," Alfred started.
"Hawkmoth. That's his name, correct?" Bruce interrupted, recalling hearing his name from the reports from Paris.
"Correct, Master Bruce," Alfred stated.
Marinette's eyes widened, processing the information.
Alfred was about to continue before Bruce held his hand up.
"Tomorrow morning we will discuss what is happening. Until then, I will be in the bat cave looking over the security feeds and claims, to see what is true and what is false," Bruce stated, already pushing past both of them.
"But father the girl-"
"Is Alfred's niece (correct me if I’m wrong) and may have information on the Joker's whereabouts. She will be...tolerated while her stay is here. Are we clear?" Bruce cut off. Damian just sighed.
"...yes, father."
Marinette just paused, before turning around and quietly making her way back to her room.
~~~~~~\(°¬°)/~~~~~~
Damian just stared at the ceiling, before rolling out of bed. He could smell fresh pancakes and bacon downstairs, maybe even a few waffles. Alfred seemed to be trying out a new recipe, Damian thought. Titus began pawing at his legs and barking in his ears. Damian just smiled softly, patted his head and made his way out of his room.
When he stumbled into the kitchen however, Alfred was in fact not baking. Instead, the same short girl had her sleeves rolled up and wearing an apron, humming a tune quietly as she navigated the kitchen.
"What are you doing here?" Damian asked, suspicious and cautious.
"I wanted to apologize for the mix up from yesterday. I really wasn't trying to attack you or steal your belongings, I know you were only trying to defend yourself," Marinette's spoke softly and sincerely. Damian eyes the pancakes suspiciously.
"How do I know these pancakes aren't drugged or poisoned and won't kill me the moment I take a bite?" Damian asked, pointing to the top of the stack.
Marinette just paused, before walking over and eating the first pancake of the stack herself.
"I know you must be disappointed but surprise surprise, I'm still alive. I assure you, the pancakes are safe," she smiled softly, her pride evident in her voice. Damian caved and gathered a few pancakes and set them on his plate. He about to roll his eyes when he bit into the first pancake, surprised at the taste of them. They were and sweet, but overwhelmingly so, tasty enough to brighten up almost anyone’s day.
She's just trying to butter me up, Damian thought. Well, no point in letting good pancakes go to waste.
Marinette just smirked proudly as she started on the next batch.
~~~~~~\(°¬°)/~~~~~~
A tall figure stepped forward confidently before stopped at his destination.
Knock knock.
Pause.
Knock knock knock.
Pause.
Knock.
Suddenly the ground below him shook, lowering him down to a dark room.
A man with dark slicked by hair and a purple suit walked in. His skin was a pale white, emphasizing his off-putting smile.
"I sent out some of my men to one of the rebel camps, should give them a bit of a scare," the pale man spoke.
"I see," spoke another, this one walking with a cane, with a gray shiny mask and a dark suit. Surrounding him, were small, dark, purple butterflies. "Fly away my little akumas, trace that fear and utilize it." Several butterflies took flight, swiftly darting out of the shattered window.
"So I hear you encountered a new hero this time, correct?" Hawkmoth asked, not bothering to turn around.
"An old man, dressed up like a mutant ninja turtle. Though the spotted little lady suddenly deemed our entertainment too boring, she didn't even bother to show up," the Joker spoke, almost offended, taking a step forward.
"Then we must draw her out," Hawkmoth spoke.
"And just how do you intend that?"
"Simple. You didn't truly think there was only one miraculous box, did you? Many were destroyed years ago, but there were several guardians for a reason. We managed to salvage a few that were scattered across the globe and utilize them," Hawkmoth explained.
"Are they as powerful as the previous ones?" the Joker asked, excitedly.
"Sadly, no. These are ranked as minor miraculous, but enough to deal great damage. Lady Wi-Fi, come forth!" Hawkmoth called. She quickly stepped forward, holding out a necklace. It had a bright green stone, that the Joker immediately reached out to touch. Once he made contact with it, it shape shifted to become a bright green bow tie, emitting a dark presence about it.
"This is the hawk miraculous, it grants the wielder heightened speed, and will grant you a once per battle ability to see through walls for 30 seconds. After you use it, you will have 3 minutes until you detransform. To trigger the ability, say, 'Arise my seeing eyes!' To transform, say, 'Kite, talons out!'"
The joker smiled wildly before telling the trigger words. Suddenly, his old suit was replaced with a long trench coat, that was jet black. Underneath was a suit that was a dark purple, and he wore a black top hat with a purple stripe in the middle. In his hand was a single desk of cards, the two joker cards having a set of seeing eyes on them, allowing him to see what the cards sees. His mask was a black and purple mask, adorned with jewels at the edge. The Joker began to cackle wildly, almost concerning Hawkmoth himself.
"Let’s bring some smiles on those kids’ faces."
Wingman of the Year: Titus the Dog
I’ll add the tags and stuff later. I’m just glad it’s done (mostly).
TimBru fic. Teen rated. M/M, you know the jazz.
“hey new neighbor it appears that your dog likes me a thousand times better than she likes your partner and they’re really jealous and i’m sorry but not really because hellloooooo there” AU
(doesn’t strictly adhere to the prompt haha)
"Titus!" Tim screamed after the Great Dane as it swerved its way out of the house. "What did you do, Kon?" Tim barged past his soon-to-be-deceased ex-boyfriend in a sprint out of the back door, hoping to flank the wayward Great Shepherd before he escaped into the park. He scrambled over the fence but lost precious time unhooking his jumper after it was snagged by a post. He swerved around a corner and was struck with the sight of the dog being petted by a stranger. A really hot stranger. The man was crouched next to Titus and accepting his overzealous licks without complaint. The man unfolded himself and stood up, like it was natural for someone in a tailored and perfectly pressed three-piece suit to let themselves be slobbered on and nuzzled by a dog without Tim's level of social regard. Standing up, he struck an even more impressive figure. "I'm sorry, I saw him in the street and recognised him. I couldn't resist myself." "That's– that's no problem, Mr. Wayne." And indeed it was Bruce Wayne himself. Dressed immaculately with baby-blue eyes and a chiselled jawline so sharp that Tim would swear he could sharpen knives with it. Really. Really hot knives. Or something. Tim needed to not say any of that and to stop gazing into his beautiful, worthy-of-several-pages-of-description-in-a-harlequin-novel, eyes. Maybe he would just look at how his lips moved when they were shaping words. Talk about Cupid's bow. Every sound a piece of poetry, as smooth as Lord Byron murmuring about cloudless climes and raven tresses. Coincidentally, Bruce did have raven hair, and the sky was clear and the sun was shining as if only to highlight his Adonis-perfection. Ugh, Tim was content to stand there and just observe him and let himself be caressed by the sounds of his sweet, sweet voice. Wait, voice? What was he saying? "Tim. Tim, are you listening?" Tim clapped a hand to his forehead. "Sorry, just, I think the sun's getting to me a little." Thank God, his red cheeks and sweaty brow were actually coming in useful. And now he had an excuse for them. Bruce stepped towards Tim and shaded him from the sun bearing down on them. He gently pulled Tim's hand away from his temple and replaced it with his own. "Your forehead's feeling a little warm there, Tim. You should probably stay inside and rest. And drink some fluids too—are we near your home?" "Huh. No, it's no bother. It's probably just from me running after Titus." "Nonsense. It's important we keep you cool just to be on the safe side. You should have some water and go for a lie down." Tim was hyperaware of Bruce standing over him, his hand still clasped in his and Bruce still pressing against his forehead. Tim's paralysis had not gone unnoticed by Bruce. "Tim. We should really get you indoors." He slipped his hand down Tim's and held his wrist. Tim barely held in a 'meep'. "Your pulse is still really fast and you're completely flushed." Bruce leaned closer. "Are you sure I can't just take you home?" "Oh, oh no, it's fine. I wouldn't want to waste any more of your time." "I can assure you Alfred won't mind." He removed his hand from Tim's forehead and used it to point over his shoulder. "In fact, he'd probably be a lot more put out if I left you by yourself in this condition. Let me walk you home." Tim mourned the loss of a point of contact, but scrambled together a response."It's– It's all right, Mr. Wayne." "Call me 'Bruce'. Please. We've known each other long enough and you're babysitting my son's dog—you're practically family at this point." "Fine. Fine. Bruce." It took an exorbitant amount of effort to push out the man's name. "And I think that if we're this close." He smiled at Tim knowingly, using the hand holding Tim's wrist to point at them both. "Then it's fair for me to drop you off and see you home safely." "I–" Bruce raised an eyebrow, prepared to rebut any argument Tim could come up with by referring back to the issue of Tim's safety. Tim breathed a sigh. "I just, I can't go back because–" "Because?" "Because my boyfr– my ex-boyfriend's there, and I don't really want to see him right now." "Then come to mine." A beat, then: "Excuse me?" "Come to Wayne Manor." He took a step back with one foot and stretched a hand towards the definitely-too-expensive-for-this-neighbourhood and saying-its-name-may-get-it-stolen car conspicuously parked a few metres away. "We'll see you all right there. You can avoid your ex for a few hours, and if you're worried about Titus, you can keep an eye on him at home. Damian lets him use the manor as his playground anyway—it wouldn't be any different to a normal day for him." Tim looked back in the direction of home, chewing on the inside of his mouth. "And–" He looked back at Bruce. There was more? "–Dick mentioned you had a proposal for me about the Neon Knights foundation. Ideas on how to expand it to reach more at-risk teens before we make it global." Tim raised his eyebrows, then came to himself, quirking his head and smiling with returned confidence. "How could I say no?" Bruce beamed at him, his eyes sparkling like dapples of sunlight off the surface of a– Nope. Don't go there, Tim. "After you," said Bruce, flourishing his hand. God, he's so charming. Then . . . I didn't think that, thought Tim. Who definitely did. Gesturing at Alfred to stay inside the car, Bruce got ahead of Tim to open the door. "We can have an early dinner too. If Alfred doesn't mind." Alfred raised the cap of his hat in salute to Tim as he climbed inside. "Not at all, Master Bruce." He raised his nose. "It's my pleasure—anything's better than you skipping meals. Or Master Tim skipping meals. Or Master Tim surviving on coffee, microwave dinners and his unnecessary ability to function on three hours of sleep for three days." Bruce grinned at Alfred's reflection in the rear-view mirror. "That's probably the coffee, Alfred." "Yes, well, being able to survive so many cups of that wretched communal coffee is probably a superpower unto itself. In my opinion." Tim squirmed in his seat. Alfred regarded him, as Bruce moved around the car to let the ever-energetic Titus in on Tim's other side. "Even so, at least Master Tim shows some level of appreciation for good food." Tim smiled, reassured. "That's because your food is the best food, Alfred." "And don't I know it, Master Tim." Bruce came back around, slipping into the seat on Tim's left. "So that's settled then. It's a date." Tim spluttered, cheeks enflamed again. Alfred raised the partition between the driver and passenger seats. H smiled as he peeled the car out of the parking space, allowing himself a quiet chuckle as they cruised down the road, Tim still trying to make sense of what Bruce had just said. Bruce smiled innocently while Tim froze in place, horrified at his situation. Bruce blinked owlishly at Tim. Tim muttered under his breath, appalled at his own blindness. "Stupid good-looking billionaires with their charm. Should've known." "I'm sorry, what was that, Tim?" "Nothing." Tim tried to reassemble his composure, folding his hands in his lap. "I said that can't be." "Why not?" "Why not? Because I prefer being wined and dined overlooking nature." "That can be arranged." Bruce picked up Tim's hand and brushed his mouth over the knuckles, being sure to snag his lips over Tim's skin as he made direct eye contact. Tim stared. Bruce dropped Tim's hand. "We can stay in the study. It overlooks the patio." He reached behind Tim . . . to scratch at Titus's neck, then leaned back in his seat to settle in for the ride. Tim crossed his arms and mimicked Bruce, staring straight ahead. He waited for a few streets and let Bruce feel safe before speaking out of the corner of his mouth. "Only if you can deliver as well as the rumours say."
“What on Earth were you thinking, Alfred? That girl is in there with valuables, she broke in here!” Damian cried out exasperated. No wonder the light was on, she must’ve been snooping around, Damian thought bitterly.
“She is a guest here, Young Master Damian, and that box belongs to her. I invited her here myself, and I offered her an invitation to stay for as long as she needs. Her home life is...not suitable for her at this moment,” Alfred reprimanded, trailing off at the end. “I understand your concerns but her father is my cousin, and I expect a thorough apology to my niece. She’s family to me, so I ask that you do not behave so ill mannered towards her again.”  Alfred gestured towards the living room, but Damian just glared at the girl sitting there.  He tugged on Titus's leash and swiftly left the room altogether.  Alfred stood there for a moment, before sighing and entering the living room.  Marinette whipped her head around at the sound of footsteps, before sighing out of relief at the sight of Alfred.
"I apologize for the behavior of the Young Master, he has some behavioral issues that Master Bruce tends to turn a blind eye too.  I can speak to him-"
"Absolutely not.  I understand why he sees me as a threat.  I'm a total stranger who just showed up in his home, I get it.  I'm not angry...just shaken up right now," Marinette explained, cutting him off.  Alfred nodded.
"Head upstairs to your room, it's at the second floor, the 3rd room to the right.  It's the first hallway you see at the 2nd flight of stairs," Alfred directed.  "The bedroom light should be on, and a pair of sleepwear will be left on the bed."  Marinette once again enveloped him in a hug.
"I can't thank you enough for this, thank you so, so much..."
He hugged her back for a moment before pointing towards the staircase at the end of the hallway.  Marinette nodded and made her way over.
