i cant overstate how important this panel is to me, how important this line is to me, how important it is that takeda is saying it and that he's saying it to hinata.
takeda famously does not know much about volleyball as a game. he saw a group of boys who loved a sport and wanted to support them as much as he could. he organized practice matches and buses and tournaments, but he didn't know the plays or the techniques or the positions, and he knew he couldn't coach them. that's why he asked ukai to coach. takeda learned, of course, but still--he couldn't know as much as ukai, whose grandfather was a famous coach, who raised the little giant. takeda doesn't know volleyball, and next to ukai, he especially doesn't know volleyball.
but this line. takeda confidently, firmly, matter-of-factly, tells hinata what volleyball is. takeda DOES know volleyball. he knows it better than anyone, better than any of the players, better than ukai, because he has seen it as a complete outsider. he was there for every practice game, (almost) every argument, every injury, every bus ride--not as a coach or a player, but as their mentor, as something completely detached from the game. first and foremost, takeda is a teacher at karasuno. he has seen every player outside of the volleyball court. he has seen them as students, as mentees, as boys. takeda has seen first hand how volleyball, how this sport, how their team, follows every player outside of the gym. his lack of volleyball experience is what allows him to see so clearly the impact that volleyball has on each player, especially hinata-- takeda sees firsthand that none of karasuno, HINATA ESPECIALLY, ever really stops playing volleyball. ever.
it's with this knowledge that he tells hinata what volleyball is. THIS IS STILL VOLLEYBALL. this: hinata, sitting on the bench, so feverish he can barely stand. that is still volleyball. volleyball is not just the game on the court. volleyball is the injuries and the training and the practice and the food and the effort and the people and the friends and the rivals and the family.
haikyuu translates to volleyball, but volleyball is not just volleyball. haikyuu is not just volleyball. it is a manga about growing up, about finding something you love to do, about meeting people who push you to be better, about discipline and hard work and also rest. it is about defeat and acceptance and triumph and friendship and love and failure and success. it is about the stages of life that make you who you are, even if you never return to the people, to the sport, to the place--they will always be a part of you. it is about a culmination of moments like these--moments that force you to be present, to accept, to appreciate the happiness and the pain, and to move on. haikyuu is volleyball and this is still volleyball!!!!!

(Very long post so heads up)
I'll admit, I remember my initial feelings back in 2019 when Martin made those comments to be little bit..I guess miffed is the best way to describe it and it kind of came down to 2 factors.
The first one being the way how the headlines and journalists frame it as him saying that the movies aren't "real movies" which I thought it undermined the human ability to engage with art, regardless of how it's perceived as high or low. Keep in mind, this was several months after Endgame and I was mostly going off the feelings people had towards that.
And the other is that when you're involve in multiple hobbies/mediums, there's a common pattern when the veterans of the industry come out and say that said thing is not the same like it used to be. This tends to happen a lot in Professional Wrestling. So when you hear it so often, you start to eventually tune it out.
But remember, I said INITIAL.
I think as time went on and when Martin elaborated on his points, I got an idea of what he was trying to say. Didn't fully agree with it, but I get it.
No I think my problem nowadays is less to do with what he said and more to do with how two groups of people interpreted his words and how the discourse keeps getting dragged into 2023. Though in some circles I'm in, I have more to say about the latter.
It felt like ever since he made those comments, social media--and by that I mean Film Twitter--has been trying to out-hot-take one another like they're somehow on the same level as Scorsese's. Everybody is set in their ways and nothing is being pushed forward.
Not helped by the fact that the MCU is now involved in the discourse about anti-intellectualism along with things like YA and Cartoons. Though I think THAT discussion had evolved into something a bit more...stupid, that's beside the point.
Here's the thing about me.
I'm not anti-curious. But I'm also somebody that hasn't fully gone beyond what the medium--or any medium--has to over. Ditto when it comes to Animation. I ironically even got interested in the MCU post-Endgame to coincide with my growing interests in comic books so you can imagine my shock when I realized that I may have it missed at its peak popularity.
I almost bought myself into this self-deprecating lie that I'm incapable of understanding anything beyond what I'm comfortable with and it made me very self-conscious.
So I try to compensate by watching more movies/expand my media literacy just so I can avoid that feeling or scenario of getting punked online.
And let me tell you, that is such an unhealthy way to look at art.
You engage with it because it's something you yourself wanted to do, not because of what other people think of you.
If they weren't going to give you a chance AFTER you tried to put in the effort, then they were never going to know anything about you nor care to.
I know deep down that I'm not the person they think I am because I don't treat art like it's a binary.
Or to put it in other words:
Just because I got something out of Elemental doesn't mean I'm not gonna get something out of the movie Flee.
It's more freeing having to do things for yourself. It helped a lot once I leaned more into that mindset.
Not only that but I also got the chance to discover some new stuff thanks to the library and the Criterion Collection. That's how I got to find Tampopo, M, Catch Me If You Can, Metropolis, The James Bond Series, The Gunfighter, The Searchers, and The Maltese Falcon.
Even some of the "comfort" movies I watched gave me the incentive too.
Shang-Chi led me to Michelle Yeoh in EEAAO and Tony Leung in the Infernal Affairs Trilogy.
Elemental is the reason why I recently rented movies like The Apartment and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It gave me that itch when it comes to romance stories.
Hell when it comes to Martin Scorsese, watching Casino for the first time had finally led to me watching one of his movies in theaters with Killers Of The Flower Moon.
Whatever the case may be, I did it for myself. It was more of a fulfilling experience that way.
That's why I find this whole discourse to be tiring.
@kylekozmikdeluxo
Here's a big reason why I sympathize with Martin Scorsese over all the endless flack he gets for a few concerns he had about superhero/tentpole movies and their effects on the overall cinema landscape...
About three years ago, in the midst of pre-vaccine COVID times, I was deep into my Beach Boys hyperfixation. At the time, I maintained a wordpress blog called "Kyle Loves Animation and More". On it, I decided to do a personal deep dive into Beach Boys album released in the early 1970s called SUNFLOWER and SURF'S UP.
I related a lot of my own neurodivergent experiences to the way Brian Wilson, a neurodivergent himself (and possibly autistic, like me), wrote songs in his idiosyncratic ways. It was a pretty long article, and I felt I put a lot into it. I tried to understand the thought process behind the songs, relating some historical context, and my own personal views on the music.
I was once part of a Facebook group dedicated to all things Beach Boys, and I decided to post the article there. It got some pretty decent marks from the community there, but there was this one man... Who presumably grew up in the '60s/'70s when their music was new, unlike me, a 1992 baby who was introduced to the Beach Boys' music via their parents... This one man found this ONE sentence in the article...
Where I remarked that the album 20/20 was "fascinatingly uneven"... I didn't even mean "uneven" in a bad way, but as a matter of fact... And he got soooooo upset... And made one comment about that... How dare I use the word "uneven" to describe the genre buffet/half made-up-of-leftovers album 20/20!
So I tried to explain, calmly, what I meant by that... And he didn't respond to me. He said to another commenter "who cares about the history of the album? the music is good!" To another commenter. Not to me directly... Passive-aggressive, much?
And also, as an artist MYSELF, I do very much CARE about the history of any given piece of art... What circumstances lead to the creation of this thing? What drove the artist? Yes, I care about the history, too! It's a fixation of mine!
...
Anyways, Scorsese. Marvel movies.
I totally get it.
Here, Scorsese is trying to make new films, new statements through the cinematic art form, openly worrying about his age and whether he has enough years left to tell more stories... He's openly reflecting about life itself, how he feels... He has an entire legacy of films behind him that far outweighs the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and I'm saying this as someone who likes the MCU and has seen at least 85% of the movies in THEATERS), one film of his alone arguably does that...
And yet all some people care about is whether he regards THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER as a work of art or not...
And ironically, a director like Francis Ford Coppola has said even more scathing things about Marvel movies... But he doesn't get an *ounce* of the flack Scorsese continues to get... And this was WELL AFTER Scorsese took the time to explain what he meant...
So yeah, I find that all so frustrating. If I were Scorsese having to read all of that (he probably doesn't, good for him), I'd be so goddamn frustrated lol.
(As an aside, on my other tumblr, I did a little article analyzing the current trajectory of superhero movies and how they are evolving, or need to evolve, in a post-ENDGAME world... I put a ton of paragraphs and research into it... And I got this one comment that was like "hush"... From an MCU stan... See what I mean?)

Character redesign references: Danny, Sam and Tucker .
(Art by the wonderful @gally-hin-phantom / @gally-hin ) click/tap image for higher resolution.
This is way overdue!! Sorry for the delay!
Danny
Full name: Daniel A.Jax Fenton
-Yes his middle name is A.jax and it's entirely bc of this post and this post .
-Danny is Trans, (note the cute bracelet!) having officially transitioned over the summer between middle school and his freshman year.
-Danny is still fourteen, and is the youngest, as well as the shortest out of the trio.
-12 ounces of whoop ass, snark and anxiety. Also puns. Dear God, the puns....
-hobbies include: Astronomy, astrology, D.O.O.M and horror movies.
-Astronmy is more of a hyperfixation tbh.
-Proficient in gymnastics, having taken classes from ages 6-12, and participated in jr. cheer-leading throughout some of middle school as a flyer. Actually used to be friends with dash and paulina.
-Favorite classes involve Science and Mathematics, he’s good at understanding difficult concepts when he can pay attention. Absolutely awful at reading comprehension.
-His style hasn't changed all that much; he absolutely lives in graphic tees, jeans and sneakers. He usually wears the hoodie to cover up the litchenburg figure scars he received from the accident.
-The Accident occurred roughly a week or so before the start of his freshman year at Casper High.
-Much of how Danny got ghost powers remains in line with the established canon, with Sam urging him to investigate the ghost zone portal, and his getting caught and electrocuted within the frame after accidentally turning it on.
-Sam didn't have to do very much convincing though, Danny's definitely a lot more interested in his parents work that in cannon, even if they can be super embarrassing about it a lot of the time.
-And this is the point where I break off from that canon: but I'm going to make a seperate post for detailing Danny's ghost half / Phantom.
Sam
Full name: Samantha Nicole Manson
-Sam isn't an Amity park native, she moves into town over the summer after getting expelled from a fancy private school and finishing the year out online/ at home.
-At 15 years old, She's the oldest out of the three of them- having gotten held back a school year at some point for "behavioral issues"
-Sam's personality is still very much in line with her cannon counter part, although while she may still be stubborn to a fault, she knows when to admit she's wrong.
-Her revised style is really more punk, than goth.
-Sam's family is still pretty well off, as her father is the Owner of "Manson refrigerators" which has had a long-standing partnership with Dairy-King Co.
-She doesn't have a great relationship with either of her parents- they view her as out of control while she feels that they're too controling. Her grandmother is a constant mediator between the three of them.
-she's a vegetarian, she won't eat meat, but ethically sourced eggs and dairy is fair game.
-Pan-romantic Asexual.
-hobbies include: Cooking, Gardening, urban exploration, social activism, Anime, horror films and novels, and D.O.OM.
-She meets Danny over the summer at the movie theater during a horror flick marathon. After talking with him for a while, she's intrigued when Danny explains what it is his parents do. Being equally shocked that she doesn't immediately dismiss their work and call him a freak, he invites her over to see the portal...
Tucker
Full name: Tucker Foley
-Meet Danny in kindergarten, and the two of them have been pretty much inseparable ever since. He's only older than Danny by about a month.
-Was the first person that Danny came out to.
-Bisexual
-Dated Danny VERY briefly (like, a week) in middle school, which, unfortunately leads to a lot of people assuming they're still a "thing" (it's annoying but I has absolutely gotten them out of a few sticky situations *cough* fake out make out *cough*
-Not really a fan of sam at first. Tuck Actually feels somewhat threatened by her in the beginning beacuse for the longest time it's been JUST him and Danny, the dynamic duo. He gets worried that Danny'll stop hanging out with him because Sam is just SO much cooler. (These worries are completely unfounded, of course.)
-Still a tech wiz, same as in cannon. Even though I've decided I'm going to set the rewrite in the early 2000's, there's gonna be more "modern" technology. (bc I love the fact that Jack, Vlad and Maddie were in college in the 80's and also don't feel like doing math to adjust the timeline) Tucker probably still has at least one PDA somewhere cause hey, vintage shits kinda cool! But it's definitely not gonna be his go to device anymore.
-Tucker has an issue with iron deficiency...hence, an increase of red meat in his diet. The "meat vs veggies" debate is absolutely a heated issue between him and sam, although after a while it settles into friendly banter rather than lengthy arguments that have Danny pulling out his hair at the lunch table.
-Tucker hates the horror genre, cause he's a freaking wuss, lmao. But he lets Sam and Danny drag him out to see movies anyway.
-Tucker's hobbies include tinkering, computer games, (including but not limited to D.O.O.M) coding and yarn crafts.
-His grandmother taught him to crochet when he would visit her in the hospital, Tucker Actually made his beanie himself.
-Danny's the only one who knows about that though because he doesn't want to be teased for liking something "girly"
-He still has a phobia of hospitals. Watching has grandma slowly deteriorating in one is what caused it.
I think I've covered everything, but odds are I'll be adding onto this at some point.
Next post will probably cover Danny's ghost half in depth!
(on a final side note, if anyone is interested in drawing character refs for this project, dm me! I can compensate with a fic based on prompt of your choice, or if you have set commission rates, $$$)

Hahahahha how the turns have tabled I'm in your inbox now >:D
Okay but Peter can totally lift Mjolnir and when he lifts it for the first time he doesn't know what it means and everyone's like O.o
Peter and Nat are both Little Mix fans and will paint each other's nails while blasting Wings or smthing
Karaoke nights at the compound. Discuss
Natasha is really really bad at dancing and she has to go to a fancy party with lots of dancing so Tony teaches her how to waltz and slow dance and such
Peter and Dr. Strange's cloak are besties and the cloak loves him more than Strange
The team watching the baby monitor footage from Peter's suit and teasing him endlessly about the embarrassing shit they found. Nat also takes part, but she keeps everyone from going too far and Tony is absolutely merciless with the teasing
Nat and Tony frequently have nightmares or can't sleep and they'll always meet up in his lab and watch movies with hat cocoa
Clint and Peter are the pranksters of the bunch and constantly mess with everyone else but never prank Nat because she's literally the queen on pranks and if they do, they're gonna end up with a bed full of ants
This is a lot I'm sorry 😅
OH SHIT HOW THE TURN TABLES-
(I’m going to be back in your inbox soon I have an angsty note in my notes app where I’ve been taking out my anger in the form of painful headcanons)
YES I LOVE THIS OMG. Thor goes to leave to get PopTarts or sm and Peters just like “wait mr. Thor you forgot your hammer :)” and hands it to him and everyone just screams.
THEY WOULD and they’d gossip and talk about the rest of the team. Clint’s in the vents painting his own nails and listening >:)
KARAOKE NIGHTS WITH THEM WOULD BE WILDDDD AHHHH
Natasha, Peter, and Steve would do some stupid songs. They’d be dying laughing the entire time bc they’re dorky idiots
Thor wouldn’t really understand but Valkyrie would drag him and Bruce up there for fun. Thor would LOVE it and Bruce, being the awkward baby he is, would just stand behind them like 🧍‍♂️
Pepper probably used to do musical theater in high school and Tony’s a dramatic bitch so they’d steal the night with some great duet lol. A Whole New World from Aladdin maybe?
Ok but this becomes SO much funnier when you combine it with the fact that she did ballet for like at least a decade.
-“Romanoff, I’ve SEEN you do ballet in the gym, how are you this bad?”
-“They are very different styles, Stark. Now shut up before I slice your fingers off.”
-“Yeah but like there has to be SOME overlap, right? You do HAVE a sense of rhythm, I’ve seen it, so why the fuck can you not understand this?”
-“I do ballet by myself, this is very different.”
-“...sure.”
THE CLOAK FAVORTISM PLS- Peter names the cloak Robert
Nat participates but she keeps a REALLY close eye on Peter to see if someone takes it too far. She gives several death glares to anyone who goes too far. Everyone’s absolutely terrified of this tiny little ginger ball of rage so one look is enough to shut them up
UGH THE INSOMNIAC BABES I LOVE THEM. They make cookies at 3am and Tony gets flour everywhere and Nat doesn’t leave a trace (spy tendencies) and it’s so funny to watch. “You spilled more flour.” “How?! It’s still above the bowl!” They always watch a funny movie or something animated (specifically Pixar/Disney movies). They both love Tangled. Tony’s favorite is the Toy Story movies bc even tho the toys aren’t AIs, they remind him of Jarvis and Friday. Nat’s favorite is Inside Out bc it shows the complexities of mental illness and inner emotions (Tony pretends not to see her crying after the Bing Bong scene. He knows she’s probably thinking about her own childhood that she lost)
YES OH MY GOD THEY SO DO. And you KNOW that they’re super elaborate and planned out. Anytime someone wants revenge on them, Clint always gets it bc they don’t DARE fuck with Natasha. Rumor has it that Tony tried once and didn’t leave the Iron Man suit for a week.
I love our headcanon exchange friendship it brings me so much joy. Also I rly needed these bc I’m reading a rly sad fic rn lol
