Okay but no joke, its a pretty consistent wheelchair user experience that the only elevators one can use are in these multi-level department stores. The ONLY way out is through...
extremely fucked up that the only way out is through
#its like a microcosm of private companies sometimes being essential in providing services in a larger area#when really the larger area (shop. local community. etc) should be providing those services#theres an H&M near me that is my preferred elevator at the store bc its low traffic and has mirrors for outfit pics#but its like.... you shouldnt have to rely on that to get places#theres also a MYER thats the ONLY elevator that gives access to the food court. so you do have to go through the whole store for access#very frustrating

The Art of Topophilia: 7 Ways to Love the Place You Live
The Art of Topophilia: 7 Ways to Love the Place You Live http://bit.ly/2mVChGJ
If you don’t know where you are, you don’t know who are. –Wendell Berry
As time went by, I also realized that the particular place I’d chosen was less important than the fact that I’d chosen and focused my life around it. Although [where I live] has taken on great significance for me, it’s no more inherently beautiful or meaningful than any other place on earth. What makes a place special is the way it buries itself inside the heart, not whether it’s flat or rugged, rich or austere, gentle or harsh, warm or cold, wild or tame. Every place, like every person, is elevated by the love and respect shown toward it, and by the way in which its bounty is received. –Richard Nelson, The Island Within
Have you recently moved somewhere new, and still feel out of place? Or maybe you’ve been residing somewhere for years, decades even, and yet haven’t developed a sense of being rooted there. You may live in a town or city, but don’t feel you belong to a real community; you don’t feel as if you’re embedded within a context of meaningful relationships, environment, and culture.
While “at-homeness” might seem to be something that will come automatically with the passage of time, like every good thing in life, topophilia — a love of place — takes intentionality to develop.
Like coming to love another person, developing affinity for a certain place involves intimately getting to know it. If your current home base might be compared to a lady, you want to learn all the details about her, whether profound or mundane. You want to know her background, how she came to be the way she is. You want to enjoy the prominent foot she puts forward, while uncovering her little-known secrets. You want to really come to an appreciation for her strengths, not only to most fully enjoy them, but as a buffer that creates more tolerance for her flaws.
It’s not only possible to kindle this kind of topophilic love affair with “sexier” places chock full of well-hyped advantages, but also with so-called undesirable communities that aren’t on the cultural radar. Just as people who may initially appear lowly and unappealing, but have warm and welcoming personalities, come to seem more attractive the more we get to know them, so too can sleepier, less vaunted locales.
Even if you don’t think the place you’re currently residing is your “one and only,” to have and to hold ‘til death do you part, it’s still worth trying to develop a deeper relationship with it. A strong sense of place and rootedness is a worthy satisfaction to pursue, even if you know it won’t last. Cliche as it is, you really ought to try to bloom where you’re planted, for however long you’re planted there.
I know it’s possible to feel like casual, distant roommates with your current hometown, rather than intimate partners in life; even after 7 years of living in the Denver area, I have sometimes still felt like a foreign interloper here. But that’s diminished the more I’ve taken proactive steps to put down roots. Here are 7 I suggest to sink your own real or adopted hometown deeper into your heart.
1. Get to know the history of where you live.
A sure recipe for feeling like a transient spectator somewhere, is to treat a place as if it only sprang into existence once you moved there. By instead making a concerted effort to get to know the history of your neighborhood, town, and state, you’ll gain a greater gratitude for it, feel more like you belong, deepen your understanding of why things are the way they are, and develop more confidence in navigating its contours — both literally and figuratively.
Perhaps the easiest place to start in discovering the past of a place is by reading. Local bookstores often carry lesser-known regional histories that sometimes get as local as individual neighborhoods. Be sure to even delve into novels set in the city or state you live in; reading Centennial and Plainsong did more to help me understand Colorado than just about any non-fiction book could have.
It takes more than reading to get a feel for a place’s history though. That’s just a start. Visit state and national parks and monuments (and battlefields and trails), stroll through the nearest history center/museum, take a guided walking tour of downtown, and just generally get your feet on the ground to do some firsthand exploring (see #2). Don’t be afraid to drive two hours to go see something for one; even the drive time itself will enhance your understanding of the place you live — remember, there’s power in liminal spaces.
2. Explore on Foot or Bike
Few things will open your eyes to the details of your city like exploring its streets, neighborhoods, and trails via the power of human locomotion.
More days than not, I get outside for a walk, run, or bike ride. These excursions have helped me see the real beauty of where I live on a slower and smaller scale (that is, beyond just the mountains on the not-too-distant horizon). I’ve discovered little streams and patches of meadows riddled with wildflowers, as well as a bunch of small parks and playgrounds for the kids that I otherwise would never have found.
Carried along by foot- or pedal-power, you’ll naturally come to notice things that you would have missed had you been traveling by car. You’ll be able to really look around and engage all your senses. You’ll say hello to the people you come across, who are in fact your neighbors, even if you’re a few miles from home. Plus, it’s just fun to look around while walking — at the houses, at the sky, at the flora and fauna.
3. Embark on Microadventures (Even to Chintzy Places)
Even in your backyard there are new adventures, new sights, new perspectives: you just have to make the small effort to go and discover them. –Alastair Humphreys
Microadventures, as coined by modern-day explorer Alastair Humphreys, are expeditions in and around your locale that take only a few hours to a day. It could be a nighttime bike ride, a walk on a new trail, a visit to an overlooked museum, or any number of other outings. The idea is that adventures don’t have to be grand in scope to be fun and fulfilling.
A few years back the McKay family took up the habit of weekly microadventures, and Brett and Kate found that they “really enjoyed exploring more of [our] local community, and ended up feeling more connected to, and pride in, living in Oklahoma.”
Make it a goal to get out for a small adventure in your area once a week. Drive to a tacky roadside attraction, look at a map (a paper map!) and pick a park or small museum to visit, rent a canoe or kayak and paddle a nearby river or lake. All of these things will enhance your understanding of your community, and further your ties to it.
One of the very best ways to develop topophilia is to get out into the nature of a place, and really experience its unique weather, landscape, and environment. There’s something about getting the dirt of the terrain up into your nostrils, and coming to know how the air feels and smells at dawn and dusk, that really moves a place into the marrow of your bones.
But don’t neglect an area’s less wild and more popular spots either. When you live somewhere, it’s easy to take its tourist attractions for granted; if you’re not careful, the people who regularly visit you might come to know the cool things to do in the area before you do! You should know your hometown so well that you become an expert in making recommendations to your out-of-town guests as to what things to do there and what things to avoid. At the same time, being well acquainted with your city’s must-see attractions initiates you into a sort of club amongst the locals too, and you can actually end up feeling left out if you’ve not done them — hence our own family’s continued embarrassment of having never experienced Casa Bonita here in Denver.
4. Read the Local Paper
Most towns, even the small ones, have a local weekly newspaper. They’re often a touch boring and the writing sometimes leaves something to be desired, but they’re a treasure trove of the ins and outs of what’s going on in your community.
Be it information about volunteering, fun events and festivals on the calendar, restaurant openings, job listings, or simply news that might not be important to the larger region but sure is in your neck of the woods — the local newspaper is highly undervalued.
In the past, the little newspaper that lands on our driveway on Thursday mornings has been relegated to the firestarter pile without so much as a glance. But lately I’ve been making an effort to at least skim through it, and I sure feel that much more like a real local rather than a transient interloper.
5. Volunteer
If you remain a “consumer” within your city, you end up only seeing one “strata” of it — socially, geographically, and experientially. A great way to get more immersed in a place — to get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the locations and institutions you might otherwise just use superficially or pass by altogether — is to volunteer.
Teaching at church, tutoring at a school, coaching your kids’ little league team, helping at a soup kitchen, sorting books at the local library (I do this and it’s great fun) . . . whatever it is, your town has needs, and you certainly have skills that can help fill those needs. Not only will you be providing a service, but you’ll see immense benefits yourself too. It’ll be impossible to not feel a greater sense of care and responsibility towards the place you live and towards the people you live near. At the same time, you’ll meet different kinds of people than you might otherwise rub shoulders with, as well as like-minded and equally passionate fellow volunteers who might become your good friends.
6. Be a Regular Somewhere
In our younger days, my wife and I liked to venture out to as many new places as we could — breweries, coffee shops, trails, etc. While some novelty is still fun and important to us, what’s held even greater reward has been in becoming regulars at some favorite local spots.
You’ll get to know people — both employees and regular patrons — and you’ll get to hear the scuttlebutt around town. When you frequent a place, you won’t mind paying the higher prices of independent shops and you’ll even come to tip more at restaurants and coffee shops because you genuinely care about the people whose livelihood depends on your business.
Beyond that, you’ll gain a special sense of belonging. When the barkeep or barista asks how your kids are doing and comps you a drink now and then, you’re conferred a certain status that can keep you powerfully rooted to the place you live. One of our greatest human desires is simply to be known; being a regular helps scratch that itch.
7. Find Other Ways to Meet People in Your Community
Many of these things — volunteering, frequenting a local shop, even having a regular walking route — will inherently help you meet people. But sometimes you just need to intentionally get out and see some local faces. Attend your neighborhood block parties (even when you don’t want to), sign up for the 5K happening downtown, chaperone a kids’ field trip if you’re able. There are so many things you can do to just get out there in meatspace.
And really, you don’t even have to make friends (right away, at least). Just knowing the faces in your community offers some sense of recognition and makes saying hi at the grocery store a little friendlier instead of a little awkward. Research says we come to like people out of sheer familiarity alone. There are plenty of people in our neighborhood who I wouldn’t consider good friends, but that I can recognize when out and about and have a friendly conversation with. It’s just another one of those things that helps me feel like I belong here — more rooted — and therefore increases my feeling of topophilia for this northwest suburb of Denver; though we were strangers when we met, the more I get to know her, the more I’ve come to love her.

Choosing a Web Designer
Virtually any in finding the right people for the job and some considerations that should be taken into account. 1 . Introduction Many businesses look for a web designer as though we were holding shopping for a general commodity item such as a light bulb - i just. e. All websites are equal and paying the fourth there’s 16 year old student on a computer course to build the site can reap exactly the same dividend as paying a specialist web development firm. Other businesses often feel they have to spend thousands when thousands of pounds on a website for it to be successful. Let us dispel these misguided beliefs Contrary to what many believe, web design is only one component within the manufacturing of your website. Some web designers can talk day and night about how very your web site can be, but if it isn't functional, user-friendly, or simply capable of helping you meet your online goals, then all the somero beauty in the world isn't going to help it serve it's intent. The design theme of a website is only one component of building a productive online presence. Choosing a Web Designer is not an easy task! - Suggestions... There is so much more to web design than just making a few web sites look pretty if you want to succeed. You need to consider your target audience, actual message, content, desired responses, visitor impact, online aims, how you are going to measure the success of the site and even more. There is so much more to web design than just making a few pages look pretty 2 . Defining Your Requirements If you have no idea the reason you want a website or what you want the website to achieve, it is at the same time to sit down and think it through, rather than flowing to put up a "White elephant" that doesn't serve a purpose. Each website must serve a purpose, and that's usually where many websites is catagorized short. They serve no purpose because the website owner by no means gave much thought to it. It's not the website's fault. An online site is inanimate. It is only what you make it. The only life an online site has is the one given to it by its creator and owner. If the human element doesn't do a good-job of defining the building blocks, the website will serve no intention and eventually die a digital death. Every website should have a definite purpose With that in mind, we'd suggest the first stage would be to specify the "Goals" of the website in relation to the requirements and high hopes of the business or organisation involved. Defining the Aim Every website should have a distinct goal or number of pursuits that are measurable. A goal can be anything from communicating with pals and associates through to making profits by selling products or services on the web (e commerce). Your goal in the first instance may even be to have a web property so potential clients don't regard your organisation as being backwards! Once you have defined a goal (or number of goals), it's incredibly important to define: The target audience. i. e. Who people want/expect to visit your website. The actions you want to result from their pay a visit to. i. e. Making an online sale, getting them to make a inquiry etc . What benefits you are giving and receiving via having the website. Defining the Key Functions (The actions) As soon as the goals of the website have been established, it's important to define what required by site visitors to meet the goals. An action is usually any traceable sequence of events carried out by the end end user. Examples might include: Getting in touch - either by simply phone, email or via an online form. Disseminating Data. Signing up for a newsletter. Completing a questionnaire Commenting with a Blog Downloading or buying products Using an online instrument Of course , there are other intangible benefits that your website might present to an end user that don't result in direct "actions"... when i. e. simply providing "peace of mind" to an active or prospective customer would be considered as such. If you haven’t already done so , then it's also useful to check out the opposition, for ideas, likes and dislikes. Establishing Your Design & Growth Preferences Once you have formulated the goals and functional necessities for the website, it's time to start building a picture of how everyone anticipate the site coming together - with regard to structure and also design theme. This doesn't need to be a definitive exercise aid Your web designer should be able to add a lot of input and strategies at a later stage, but it helps to have some ideas to foodstuff into the requirements you approach the designer with in the first illustration. As follows are a few that we feel should be mandatory: The website need to adhere to recognised standards. The site should be written to " and the answer was: and validate to the standards defined by the World Wide Web Pool (W3C) - this will in turn, mean your site should be cross-browser friendly (i. e. Appear the same across various a variety of web browser). The website should be accessible. In web words, this means that it conforms to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). The website should be clean, crisp and fast loading. Your website should be easy to use and inoffensive (see below). Our Hint: Easy to use and Inoffensive - The WOW factor Webbies are often asked to produce a website with the "WOW factor". The "WOW factor" is a term that means different things to different people. Frequently , the person or business commissioning the website have grandiose ideas for extensive animation, splash screens, cartoons, garish patterns... This isn't the WOW factor - A bold garish pattern which has "off the wall" colour schemes may seem bold along with innovative to some people, but may really put off various other site users - Find the happy medium. If a man or woman wants to buy a pair of shoes online then their mission is essentially to find the desirable pair of shoes at the right price in the speediest possible time. They don't visit an e-commerce site to observe an animation of shoes tap dancing across the screen. Abandon cartoons and needless animation that add zero price to those experts in their own field. People watch typically the Simpsons for that type of entertainment. They likely won't be traveling to your website for (or be impressed by) to be "dazzled" by irrelevant attempts to stand out. Our own interpretation on the "WOW factor" is a site that is very simple to use, fresh, crisp, user friendly, fast loading with great content. Fundamentally, the site that delivers it's underlying message quickly in addition to concisely is the most effective. Google has the WOW Factor and you no longer see slow loading animation on that website. Typically the WOW factor should mean Winning on the Web and nothing else. Ok, and so you've mapped out some goals and requirements... time to check for the right guys to go ahead and implement the perfect solution for you. 3. Selecting a Web Designer / Developer Initially, where you can begin is by putting together a shortlist of designers. You could possibly choose to do this in any number of ways but here are some suggestions that you can wish to factor in: The location of the prospective designer. This may could possibly be a factor for you. Some people are happy to work remotely yet others prefer some face to face interaction. If the latter is essential for your requirements, then you will need to focus on designers in your local area. The designer's portfolio. This is usually a key factor in any shortlisting process. You may opt to favour designers who have worked specifically in the sector you will be targeting, or you may simply like other unrelated web pages they have developed. Independent Word of mouth recommendation. You may have received shining reports on particular designers and their after-sales service. No longer overlook this. The size of the company. Generally speaking, the size of the company will provide you with little idea to the quality or work they can develop or the services they can provide. Some SMEs prefer to work towards a more personal level with smaller providers or employed designers with larger corporates preferring the opposite. The cost instant Most professional web designers tend to produce work on a bespoke base, tailored uniquely for each client - and the vast majority never publish prices. (We do). However , an initial discussion can provide you with a "ball park" figure at least based on your requirements format. Some designers are also able to provide cost-effective "out of the box" solutions at a fixed price. Tip: Get a fixed price tag quote rather than an hourly rate. Let's face them... an hourly or daily rate is meaningless being a measuring stick when your consider it may take one designer twice as extended as another to complete the same job. Web designers will typically flaunt previous work on their own websites, but be sure to consider likely gearing a site's design and structure to conditions presented by another party that likely won't complement your own. It's more important that you are confident that they can implement your own personal solution than perhaps reading too much into other layout work that you might not necessarily like. Another consideration you may is going to take into account is the attitude a designer shows when you first help make contact. You can often gauge whether they are genuinely enthusiastic about the project and whether they are going to be proactive - in case they can offer a high level of support. Designers not offering a landline phone number or a business address may be harder to get hold of when you need them the most. Trust your instincts and exercising common sense. Tip: Don't base everything on price and ensure you compare "like" with "like". Also, don't be reluctant to share your budget with the designers during initial discussions then see what they can deliver within it. Time is normally wasted if you are discussing the project over days and also weeks and then end up being miles apart on pricing targets. The more information you give furnish the designer with, relating to goals, requirements and design preferences, the better. Also make sure that you explore timescales and payment schedules (most designers will require a deposit upfront and a final balance payment when the venture is completed. There may also be interim payment milestones pertaining to larger projects). Additionally , enquire about any recurring charges just for support, future amends, web hosting, domains etc . Neither bash will want hidden surprises. 4. Questions You will be Asked It is usually better to be prepared when you approach web designers... they will also have their individual queries to establish a the requirements, gauge the work involved plus furnish you with a quote. Typical questions you might be inquired include the following: What does your company do? What are the Unique Promoting Points that your company has to offer? What is the purpose of the website? How will you see the website evolving in the future? Do you have any existing printing? i. e. Logo, colour schemes or other ads? Who are your competitors? Do you require e commerce or a web payment mechanism? Can you provide links to other websites which you like from a design perspective? Can you provide links to other web-sites that you like from a functionality perspective? (i. e. How they work) What is your budget? Don't be afraid to disclose a budget find - it can help a lot. If you aren't able to get an immediate offer, request that the designer gets back to you and establish a timescale for this to happen. As you can probably tell, choosing a web designer isn't necessarily a simple process if you are seeking the right fit for your project. The harder detailed research and preparation that you carry out, the better. your five. Going ahead When you make a decision on proceeding with a beautiful, make sure to get the quote in writing and make sure the it's obvious that the copyright of the website is yours once completed. Make certain all charges (including any future and/or recurring charges) are spelled out to avoid any ambiguity and troubles further down the line. Ideally, once you wish to proceed, your web creator should create a test web address, where you can monitor ongoing growth and provide feedback throughout. Part of a wider strategy Your internet site should integrate with and complement your other promoting activities. Promote your site address where you can. Consider putting it all on your business cards, stationery, merchandise, delivery vans, carrier bags, buyer receipts and on your shop front. Drive people to your internet site through online adverts, search engine marketing and active offline campaign.

For those of us that love military television shows, books about combat, military gear, and practical weaponry, there is airsoft, a fresh sport to be reckoned with on the using field.
This is the most popular method of playing airsoft, won't this game style does not require hard-core gamers it is recommended that players must have some kind of prior experience. We supply paintball fields, paintball tournament players and bushball players. When people begin playing airsoft, it is usually small games, frequently one-on-one or two-on-two.
They have tested their fields and changed any field that has been lesser used to create it bigger and better for the paintball players. The last game we played, the entire other group was still in the overall game even though my friends and I strike the opposing teams multiple occasions. Your refs will make sure you get plenty of play time on a variety of fields plus they often making sure many people are playing by the rules and operating safely.
Thankfully, it wasn't too nerve-racking or overwhelming as we were placed into large 50-60 man team games where you could sit back and get yourself a feel for the action before jumping right in. There a lot of semi pro players that seem to play right here but overall the overall game is fair. Among the additional airsoft skirmish tips that I want to give out is that many people like to run particular scenarios whenever they are playing a game. Please go to Airsoft Megastore to shop for airsoft AEGs , airsoft shotguns or the proper airsoft blowback guns for players of any encounter level.
The factors were tallied up by Postie, the settlers got factors for killing Indians (10 killed) and Indians got points for killing settlers (10, my personality survived, I nearly got Ray at one stage but he pulled one of is own braves before him and they took the round), scalping, setting fires, just how much items they captured etc...........and in the long run the settlers won by 40 points to 38 (since then there were several attempts to improve the score in favour of the Indians but a win is a win regardless of Indian player shenanigans), the overall game was good and some points were raised and sorted, I really believe I played the overall game like someone who would protect the womenfolk and kids but I also believe that the people of this time were a hardy bunch & most women could have been armed or at the minimum known how exactly to use muskets. Dressed in armed service like fatigues, and armed with look-alike Airsoft guns, these teams engage in simulated armed service battles commonly referred to as the Mil-Sim (armed service simulation). These airsoft guns can impersonate and support the fully automatic top features of most AEG brands and truly give greater enthusiasm to the airsoft players.
These characteristic will appeal differently to the players who use airsoft guns. Since all airsoft guns fire a nonlethal propellant via a burst of atmosphere; airsoft players and enthusiasts varied interests relative to the method used to create that burst of air flow. From the few individuals who played a demo at NOVA it apparently plays extremely fast but is still crunchy in a way a skirmish game should be. It's apparently very tactical and doesn't perform the usual IGOUGO of all GW games but another activation system that is apparently a little like Frostgrave.
The action, the intensity and the realism of airsoft skirmish at a real field against additional teams with snipers was absolutely awesome. Along with the mega games, international tournament paintball leagues just like the PSP, NPPL, CXBL, NXL, and Millennium Series offered a location for talented local players to become true paintball specialists. The online forums turned a group of people playing a casino game on the fringes of severe sports together to create a global community that produced every player feel just like these were part of something larger then themselves.
youtube
Many airsoft players consider snipers to have one of the most sought after roles about the field. Guns can get up to 22 balls out a second, and you could hit what you goal at. The areas are much smaller, video games quicker. Yet, the growth of paintball can really be seen in the number of recreation players; scenario games exist that include up to 2,000 players in a single game.
Skirmish Exeter Airsoft player in full with sniper rifle, silenced pistol and gear. Keeping in mind that there are certain rules which decrease realism (e.g., hits beneath the elbow or knee, or on the gun don't count, the paintball guns hold a lot more ammo than any gun that's not belt fed), and the fact that rather than a bunch of trained operators each team was more like an uncoordinated mob, I think there were a few lessons to be gained as to the use of real force. Please, Please, Please can you help support this year's event by either owning a trade stand, donating prizes for the auction, supplying paintballs for sale on your day, or also sending up players or volunteers to greatly help.
Following the games have completed, players are welcome to participate in a couple of sandy's and aperitifs before seriously killing the karaoke. A 5 man mini formula 5 guy event will be held on the Hyperball field with video games up to ten minutes very long, against the clock, play as much times as you wish. To promote the sport, PALS & TPCI became a member of with the Sports activities Authority of India in 2007 and trained several unemployed youth, who run a lot more than 200 paintball areas across India today.
Virginia is one of two states that permit its towns to adopt ordinances on paintball guns, allowing its local authorities to do so. Delaware however just authorizes Wilmington to do so, but does allow paintball to be played on farms since it is considered an agritourism activity. The UKPSF expectations to send an application to the UK Sports council to create paintball a recognised sport in the UK. The UKPSF possess initiated a membership recruitment scheme for real regular players, and a report with Leeds Beckett University on the participation and benefits of paintball. Analysis published by the Minnesota Paintball Association has argued that paintball is one of the statistically safest sports activities to take part in, with 20 accidents per 100,000 players annually, and these accidental injuries tend to become incidental to outdoor physical activity (e.g. trip-and-fall).
Leagues can end up being of varied sizes (for example, regional, national or international) and provide organized tournaments and or video games for professional, semi-professional, and amateur groups, sometimes with financial prizes. However, most areas are FPO (Field Paint Just,) meaning players must purchase paint at the location or at a pro shop associated with the park. Some areas are "BYOP" (Bring Your Own Paint), allowing players to buy paint at unrelated shops or online and utilize it at their field.
Paintball is played in both commercial venues, which require paid entrance, and private land; both of which may include multiple fields of varying size and design. However, mid to late game tactics tend to end up being limited to groups of players sticking jointly or doing isolated episodes instead of a coordinated sweep down the field. Urban scenarios and https://andyzrvi810.site123.me/paintball-shops-fields-are-usually-far-better-about-the-treatment-of-their-paint-and-either-offer woodsball fields have a tendency to be bigger and with an increase of cover, shortening firing lanes and requiring players to go more to get good photos against their opponent.
Conversely, if most firing lanes on the field are obvious, players in each team possess greater mobility and the use of covering fire to pin an opponent is much less useful simply because the player can stay behind cover while moving very long distances, so players tend to fire much less and move even more to get clear shots. Player and team strategy varies based on the size and design of the field and the total number and experience level of players. Some areas encourage players to aim from opponents' heads during play when possible; splatter from mask hits can penetrate ventilation holes in the goggles and cause eye discomfort, close-range hits to the mask could cause improperly preserved lenses to fail, and hits to unprotected areas of the facial skin, head and throat are especially painful and may cause more serious injury.
Masks On Even when a game isn't happening, practically all venues enforce a masks-on rule while players are within the taking part in area. Speedball video games were originally started in an effort to make the overall game safer for players who might trip on uneven woodland terrain. Speedball is definitely played within an open field that could be in comparison to a soccer field, it really is flat with at the least natural obstacles, and sometimes artificial turf is used, especially in indoor areas.
The term is often used as a synonym for specialized scenario-based play, but it technically refers to virtually any type of paintball played in fields primarily composed of natural terrain and cover such as for example trees and berms, instead of manmade obstacles.

Meet Sebastián Koziura and Enrique Schcolnik, FRÍO Gelato
The Faces of Small Business campaign highlights the stories behind some of Lakeview's beloved small businesses to communicate the importance of shopping and eating local. Learn more and explore other stories at www.lakeviewchamber.com/Faces.
Please share a little bit about yourself and your business.
As cousins having grown up in Buenos Aires, we started FRÍO Gelato in 2013 and are proud to bring Argentina’s gelato tradition to the United States. Based in Evanston, we offer consumers an Argentinian, artisanal and allergen-friendly dessert in a setting much like what you would find at many of the corner “heladería” in Buenos Aires. Sebastián had worked in a gelateria in Patagonia when he was younger and learned from some masters there, also attending gelato classes here in the United States along with other people from Italy and Argentina. Enrique grew up working with dairy cattle as a laborer and milker on many of the "estancias" around Buenos Aires. Here in the United States, he had been working as a large animal veterinarian as well as a dairy consultant with over 45 dairies, totaling over 40,000 milking cows. His expertise has been critical to FRÍO Gelato, ensuring the freshest milk possible—a key gelato ingredient. The convergence of the timing and our combined knowledge meant the birth of FRÍO Gelato was imminent for us!
What inspired you to start a small business?
In Argentina, gelato is more than a dessert—it is a social tradition that is held dear at any time of the day and during any season of the year. Growing up in Buenos Aires, we fondly remember walking to the corner “heladería” with our grandmother to have one smooth "cucurucho" swirl of “dulce de leche” gelato. It wasn’t just the flavors we now missed most from our childhood of years ago—it was the anticipation of a special family outing for this delicious frozen treat right down the street in our neighborhood. Still today, these neighborhood “heladerías” are a place of convergence where families enjoy time together, where neighbors run into each other, and where friends meet for coffee or gelato. We are both gelato connoisseurs—or maybe “gluttons” is a better word—and often complained how we could not find the flavors of our country here in the US. The idea of starting an Argentine gelato brand was born from a joke that we often tossed around, “Why not just start our OWN gelato company?!” And now, we bring you FRÍO Gelato—an Argentine gelato experience right down the street in your neighborhood.
What sets your business apart from others?
As far as we know, we are the only Argentine gelato producer in the city of Chicago, the state of Illinois and the Midwest. We believe the essence of our brand, and what sets us apart from other frozen dessert companies, is boiled down to the three A’s: our tagline is that FRÍO Gelato is “argentine ▪ artisanal ▪ allergen-friendly.” Customers partake in an Argentine experience the moment they walk into our store. Our stores mimic a typical sleek and modern, yet warm, aesthetic you would find at a “heladeria” in Argentina. In addition, we offer gelato to-go to be delivered in kilo-containers as is typical in Argentina where gelato is also commonly delivered at homes like pizza is in the U.S! FRÍO’s product is entirely artisanal in that we make and pasteurize our own base from scratch in small batches at our kitchen in Evanston. We then add natural flavorings such as fresh or frozen fruit, real whole vanilla beans, real whole coffee beans, etc. For example, our banana and avocado gelatos do eventually turn gray, since we don’t use any artificial colorings or flavors. It is a truly homemade, artisanal product. Many gelato manufacturers buy a pre-made base from a supplier and then add powdered flavorings, mix it all together, and run it through the gelato machine for the final product. At FRÍO, no artificial flavorings are added—only fresh & natural ingredients. Finally, FRÍO is allergen-friendly and made with a nut and gluten-free focus. We made the decision early on to appeal to as many customers as possible and to not exclude anyone with potential allergies. Those with egg allergies can eat most all our flavors and those with dairy issues can enjoy our sorbets that are whipped so nicely they almost feel like gelato!
What is your favorite thing about operating a small business in Lakeview?
Our Evanston flagship location, which now has three seasons under its belt, has received such tremendous support from the community that we wanted to find a similar feel for our second location. Having an Argentinian background, we spent a lot of time in the last 20 years on Southport dining at Tango Sur and shopping at El Mercado. We’ve seen the tremendous growth of the Southport Corridor—it’s now one of the most booming shopping and entertainment districts in Lakeview. We realized that the community around Lakeview has everything we were looking for in terms of population density and makeup. The community is keen on supporting small businesses, has adventurous palettes that are eager to try new and different foods and flavors, and the community respects and craves quality products and services. We just opened in April of this year on Southport and are enjoying the support from the Lakeview neighbors. I also want to mention that there is tremendous support from the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce and the Southport Neighbors group who all want to work together to help each other succeed. We are thrilled to be a part of this vibrant community!
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about opening a small business?
Sometimes it is good to have people with different skill sets on your team when starting out. Sebastian’s wife who heads marketing for FRÍO, Karla, has a business degree and her training showed her to do all due diligence up front and to the “t.” The Koziura/Schcolnik cousins are entrepreneurs who just “get things done”—sometimes without planning first! Therefore, we initially started FRÍO Gelato as a wholesale gelato company selling to restaurants, farmers markets, and artisanal boutique markets. We quickly realized that consumers loved our gelato, but our brand was being diluted—going unrecognized or unknown entirely. What we truly wanted to sell was the “Argentina gelateria experience,” so we switched our strategy to retail, where we could control the quality of our product and the experience. So far, this decision has paid off for us. Our advice would be not to be afraid to experiment and that you can really take an idea and make it a reality!
Why should people support small businesses like yours?
Thriving small businesses are the backbone of building a community. We contribute to local economies by bringing growth and innovation to the community where our business is established. We provide employment opportunities to people who may not be employable by larger corporations and we tend to attract talent who is forward-thinking and innovative. Basically, a commercial area of small businesses, like the Southport Corridor in Lakeview, that is walkable, accessible and frequented by locals and visitors alike creates for a spectacular environment and neighborhood for everyone.
Is there anything else you'd like readers to know about you or your business?
We at FRÍO Gelato love what we do. We are pleased to be a contributing part of our local communities and have really enjoyed getting to know the people who make up the neighborhoods we work in. It is so fun to have repeat customers and developed relationships with such interesting people. We appreciate the positive support we’ve received and hope we can continue to provide a great environment for our customers.

Choosing a Web Designer
Here are some tips in finding the right people for the job and some considerations to be taken into account.
1. Introduction
Many businesses look for a web designer as though they were shopping for a general commodity item such as a light bulb - i.e. All websites are equal and paying the 16 year old student on a computer course to build the site will reap exactly the same dividend as paying a specialist web development agency. Other businesses often feel they have to spend thousands upon thousands of pounds on a website for it to be successful.
Let us dispel these myths
Contrary to what many believe, web design in South Wales is only one component in the production of your website. Some web designers can talk day and night about how pretty your web site can be, but if it isn't functional, user-friendly, or capable of helping you meet your online goals, then all the superficial beauty in the world isn't going to help it serve it's purpose. The design theme of a website is only one component of building a successful online presence.
Choosing a Web Designer is not an easy task! - Here are some tips...
There is so much more to web design than just making a few web pages look pretty if you want to succeed. You need to consider your target audience, underlying message, content, desired responses, visitor impact, online goals, how you are going to measure the success of the site and more. There is so much more to web design than just making a few web pages look pretty
2. Defining Your Requirements
If you have no idea why you want a website or what you want the website to achieve, it is as well to sit down and think it through, rather than rushing to put up a "White elephant" that doesn't serve a purpose. Every website must serve a purpose, and that's usually where many websites falls short. They serve no purpose because the website owner never gave much thought to it. It's not the website's fault. A website is inanimate. It is only what you make it. The only life a website has is the one given to it by its designer and owner. If the human element doesn't do a good job of defining the building blocks, the website will serve no purpose and eventually die a digital death. Every website should have a distinct purpose With that in mind, we'd suggest the first stage would be to define the "Goals" of the website in relation to the requirements and aspirations of the business or organisation involved.
Defining the Goal
Every website should have a distinct goal or number of goals that are measurable. A goal can be anything from communicating with friends and associates through to making profits by selling products or services online (e commerce). Your goal in the first instance may even be to have a web presence so potential clients don't regard your organisation as being backward! Once you have defined a goal (or number of goals), it's equally important to define:
The target audience. i.e. Who you want/expect to visit your website.
The actions you want to result from their visit. i.e. Making an online sale, getting them to make an inquiry etc.
What benefits you are giving and receiving from having the website.
Defining the Key Functions (The actions)
Once the goals of the website have been established, it's important to define the actions required by site visitors to meet the goals. An action is any traceable sequence of events carried out by the end user.
Examples might include:
Getting in touch - either by phone, email or via an online form.
Disseminating Information.
Signing up for a newsletter.
Completing a questionnaire
Commenting on a Blog
Downloading or buying products
Using an online tool
Of course, there are other intangible benefits that your website might provide to an end user that don't result in direct "actions"... i.e. simply providing "peace of mind" to an existing or prospective customer would be considered as such. If you haven't already done so, then it's also useful to check out the competition, for ideas, likes and dislikes.
Establishing Your Design & Development Preferences
Once you have formulated the goals and functional requirements for the website, it's time to start building a picture of how you anticipate the site coming together - with regard to structure and design theme. This doesn't need to be a definitive exercise - Your web designer should be able to add a lot of input and suggestions at a later stage, but it helps to have some ideas to feed into the requirements you approach the designer with in the first instance.
As follows are a few that we feel should be mandatory:
The website should adhere to recognised standards. The site should be written to conform and validate to the standards defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) - this will in turn, mean your site should be cross-browser friendly (i.e. Appear the same across various different types of web browser).
The website should be accessible. In web terms, this means that it conforms to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
The website should be clean, crisp and fast loading.
The website should be easy to use and inoffensive (see below).
Our Tip: Easy to use and Inoffensive - The WOW factor
Webbies often get asked to produce a website with the "WOW factor". The "WOW factor" is a term that means different things to different people. Often, the person or business commissioning the website have grandiose plans for extensive animation, splash screens, cartoons, garish designs... This isn't the WOW factor - A bold garish design with "off the wall" colour schemes may seem bold and innovative to some people, but may really put off other site users - Find the happy medium.
If a person wants to buy a pair of shoes online then their mission is basically to find the desirable pair of shoes at the right price in the quickest possible time. They don't visit an e-commerce site to watch an animation of shoes tap dancing across the screen. Leave cartoons and needless animation that add zero value to those experts in their own field. People watch the Simpsons for that type of entertainment. They likely won't be visiting your website for (or be impressed by) to be "dazzled" by irrelevant attempts to stand out.
Our own interpretation of the "WOW factor" is a site that is very simple to use, clean, crisp, user friendly, fast loading with great content. Basically, the site that delivers it's underlying message quickly and concisely is the most effective. Google has the WOW Factor and you don't see slow loading animation on that website. The WOW factor should mean Winning on the Web and nothing else.
Ok, so you've mapped out some goals and requirements... time to start looking for the right guys to go ahead and implement the solution for you.
3. Selecting a Web Designer / Developer
Initially, the best place to begin is by putting together a shortlist of designers. You may choose to do this in any number of ways but here are some suggestions that you may wish to factor in:
The location of the prospective designer. This may or may not be a factor for you. Some people are happy to work remotely and others prefer some face to face interaction. If the latter is essential to you, then you will need to focus on designers in your local area.
The designer's portfolio. This is usually a key factor in any shortlisting process. You may choose to favour designers who have worked specifically in the sector you are targeting, or you may simply like other unrelated websites they have developed.
Independent Word of mouth recommendation. You may have received glowing reports on particular designers and their after-sales service. Don't overlook this.
The size of the company. Generally speaking, the size of the company provides you with little idea to the quality or work they can produce or the services they can provide. Some SMEs prefer to work on a more personal level with smaller providers or freelance designers with larger corporates preferring the opposite.
The cost - Most professional web designers tend to produce work on a bespoke basis, tailored uniquely for each client - and the vast majority do not publish prices. (We do). However, an initial discussion should be able to provide you with a "ball park" figure at least based on your requirements outline. Some designers are also able to provide cost-effective "out of the box" solutions at a fixed price.
Tip: Get a fixed price quote rather than an hourly rate. Let's face it... an hourly or daily rate is meaningless as a measuring stick when your consider it may take one designer twice as long as another to complete the same job.
Web designers will typically showcase previous work on their own websites, but be sure to consider that they are gearing a site's design and structure to requirements presented by another party that likely won't match your own. It's more important that you are confident that they can implement your solution than perhaps reading too much into other design work that you might not necessarily like.
Another consideration you may should take into account is the attitude a designer shows when you first make contact. You can often gauge whether they are genuinely interested in the project and whether they are going to be proactive - and if they can offer a high level of support. Designers not providing a landline phone number or a business address may be harder to contact when you need them the most. Trust your instincts and exercise common sense.
Tip: Don't base everything on price and make sure you compare "like" with "like". Also, don't be afraid to share your budget with the designers during initial discussions and then see what they can deliver within it. Time is often wasted if you are discussing the project over days or weeks and then end up being miles apart on pricing expectations.
The more information you give furnish the designer with, relating to your goals, requirements and design preferences, the better. Also make sure that you discuss timescales and payment schedules (most designers will ask for a deposit upfront and a final balance payment when the project is completed. There may also be interim payment milestones for larger projects). Additionally, enquire about any recurring charges for support, future amends, web hosting, domains etc. Neither party will want hidden surprises.
4. Questions You will be Asked
It's always better to be prepared when you approach web designers... they will also have their own queries to establish a the requirements, gauge the work involved and furnish you with a quote.
Typical questions you might be asked include the following:
What does your company do?
What are the Unique Selling Points that your company has to offer?
What is the purpose of the website?
How do you see the website evolving in the future?
Do you have any existing branding? i.e. Logo, colour schemes or other marketing materials?
Who are your competitors?
Do you require e commerce or an online payment mechanism?
Can you provide links to other websites that you like from a design perspective?
Can you provide links to other websites that you like from a functionality perspective? (i.e. How they work)
What is your budget? Don't be afraid to disclose a budget figure - it can help a lot.
If you aren't able to get an immediate quote, request that the designer gets back to you and establish a timescale for this to happen. As you can probably tell, choosing a web designer isn't necessarily a straightforward process if you are seeking the right fit for your project. The more detailed research and preparation that you carry out, the better.
5. Going ahead
When you make a decision on proceeding with a designer, make sure to get the quote in writing and make sure the it's clear that the copyright of the website is yours once completed. Ensure all charges (including any future and/or recurring charges) are spelled out to avoid any ambiguity and problems further down the line.
Ideally, once you wish to proceed, your web developer should create a test web address, where you can monitor ongoing development and provide feedback throughout.
Part of a wider strategy
Your website should integrate with and complement your other marketing activities. Promote your site address where you can. Consider putting it on your business cards, stationery, merchandise, delivery vans, carrier bags, customer receipts and on your shop front. Drive people to your website through online adverts, search engine marketing and active offline promotion.

Choosing a Web Designer
Here are some tips in finding the right people for the job and some considerations to be taken into account.
1. Introduction
Many businesses look for a web designer as though they were shopping for a general commodity item such as a light bulb – i.e. All websites are equal and paying the 16 year old student on a computer course to build the site will reap exactly the same dividend as paying a specialist web development agency. Other businesses often feel they have to spend thousands upon thousands of pounds on a website for it to be successful.
Let us dispel these myths
Contrary to what many believe, web design is only one component in the production of your website. Some web designers can talk day and night about how pretty your web site can be, but if it isn’t functional, user-friendly, or capable of helping you meet your online goals, then all the superficial beauty in the world isn’t going to help it serve it’s purpose. The design theme of a website is only one component of building a successful online presence.
Choosing a Web Designer is not an easy task! – Here are some tips…
If you have no idea why you want a website or what you want the website to achieve, it is as well to sit down and think it through, rather than rushing to put up a “White elephant” that doesn’t serve a purpose. Every website must serve a purpose, and that’s usually where many websites falls short. They serve no purpose because the website owner never gave much thought to it. It’s not the website’s fault. A website is inanimate. It is only what you make it. The only life a website has is the one given to it by its designer and owner. If the human element doesn’t do a good job of defining the building blocks, the website will serve no purpose and eventually die a digital death. Every website should have a distinct purpose With that in mind, we’d suggest the first stage would be to define the “Goals” of the website in relation to the requirements and aspirations of the business or organisation involved.
Defining the Goal
Every website should have a distinct goal or number of goals that are measurable. A goal can be anything from communicating with friends and associates through to making profits by selling products or services online (e commerce). Your goal in the first instance may even be to have a web presence so potential clients don’t regard your organisation as being backward! Once you have defined a goal (or number of goals), it’s equally important to define:
The target audience. i.e. Who you want/expect to visit your website.
The actions you want to result from their visit. i.e. Making an online sale, getting them to make an inquiry etc.
What benefits you are giving and receiving from having the website.
Defining the Key Functions (The actions)
Once the goals of the website have been established, it’s important to define the actions required by site visitors to meet the goals. An action is any traceable sequence of events carried out by the end user.
Examples might include:
Getting in touch – either by phone, email or via an online form.
Disseminating Information.
Signing up for a newsletter.
Completing a questionnaire
Commenting on a Blog
Downloading or buying products
Using an online tool
Of course, there are other intangible benefits that your website might provide to an end user that don’t result in direct “actions”… i.e. simply providing “peace of mind” to an existing or prospective customer would be considered as such. If you haven’t already done so, then it’s also useful to check out the competition, for ideas, likes and dislikes.
Establishing Your Design & Development Preferences
Once you have formulated the goals and functional requirements for the website, it’s time to start building a picture of how you anticipate the site coming together – with regard to structure and design theme. This doesn’t need to be a definitive exercise – Your web designer should be able to add a lot of input and suggestions at a later stage, but it helps to have some ideas to feed into the requirements you approach the designer with in the first instance.
As follows are a few that we feel should be mandatory:
The website should adhere to recognised standards. The site should be written to conform and validate to the standards defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) – this will in turn, mean your site should be cross-browser friendly (i.e. Appear the same across various different types of web browser).
The website should be accessible. In web terms, this means that it conforms to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
The website should be clean, crisp and fast loading.
The website should be easy to use and inoffensive (see below).
Our Tip: Easy to use and Inoffensive – The WOW factor
Webbies often get asked to produce a website with the “WOW factor”. The “WOW factor” is a term that means different things to different people. Often, the person or business commissioning the website have grandiose plans for extensive animation, splash screens, cartoons, garish designs… This isn’t the WOW factor – A bold garish design with “off the wall” colour schemes may seem bold and innovative to some people, but may really put off other site users – Find the happy medium.
If a person wants to buy a pair of shoes online then their mission is basically to find the desirable pair of shoes at the right price in the quickest possible time. They don’t visit an e-commerce site to watch an animation of shoes tap dancing across the screen. Leave cartoons and needless animation that add zero value to those experts in their own field. People watch the Simpsons for that type of entertainment. They likely won’t be visiting your website for (or be impressed by) to be “dazzled” by irrelevant attempts to stand out.
Our own interpretation of the “WOW factor” is a site that is very simple to use, clean, crisp, user friendly, fast loading with great content. Basically, the site that delivers it’s underlying message quickly and concisely is the most effective. Google has the WOW Factor and you don’t see slow loading animation on that website. The WOW factor should mean Winning on the Web and nothing else.
Ok, so you’ve mapped out some goals and requirements… time to start looking for the right guys to go ahead and implement the solution for you.
The designer’s portfolio. This is usually a key factor in any shortlisting process. You may choose to favour designers who have worked specifically in the sector you are targeting, or you may simply like other unrelated websites they have developed.
Independent Word of mouth recommendation. You may have received glowing reports on particular designers and their after-sales service. Don’t overlook this.
The size of the company. Generally speaking, the size of the company provides you with little idea to the quality or work they can produce or the services they can provide. Some SMEs prefer to work on a more personal level with smaller providers or freelance designers with larger corporates preferring the opposite.
The cost – Most professional web designers tend to produce work on a bespoke basis, tailored uniquely for each client – and the vast majority do not publish prices. (We do). However, an initial discussion should be able to provide you with a “ball park” figure at least based on your requirements outline. Some designers are also able to provide cost-effective “out of the box” solutions at a fixed price.
Tip: Get a fixed price quote rather than an hourly rate. Let’s face it… an hourly or daily rate is meaningless as a measuring stick when your consider it may take one designer twice as long as another to complete the same job.
Web designers will typically showcase previous work on their own websites, but be sure to consider that they are gearing a site’s design and structure to requirements presented by another party that likely won’t match your own. It’s more important that you are confident that they can implement your solution than perhaps reading too much into other design work that you might not necessarily like.
Another consideration you may should take into account is the attitude a designer shows when you first make contact. You can often gauge whether they are genuinely interested in the project and whether they are going to be proactive – and if they can offer a high level of support. Designers not providing a landline phone number or a business address may be harder to contact when you need them the most. Trust your instincts and exercise common sense.
Tip: Don’t base everything on price and make sure you compare “like” with “like”. Also, don’t be afraid to share your budget with the designers during initial discussions and then see what they can deliver within it.
It’s always better to be prepared when you approach web designers… they will also have their own queries to establish a the requirements, gauge the work involved and furnish you with a quote.
Don’t be afraid to disclose a budget figure – it can help a lot.
If you aren’t able to get an immediate quote, request that the designer gets back to you and establish a timescale for this to happen. As you can probably tell, choosing a web designer isn’t necessarily a straightforward process if you are seeking the right fit for your project. The more detailed research and preparation that you carry out, the better.
5. Going ahead
When you make a decision on proceeding with a designer, make sure to get the quote in writing and make sure the it’s clear that the copyright of the website is yours once completed. Ensure all charges (including any future and/or recurring charges) are spelled out to avoid any ambiguity and problems further down the line.

Representative Kristi Noem Town Hall Notes
Representative Kristi Noem Town Hall Notes by Amanda Hoover
March 18, 2017, 10:00 AM
Watertown Police Department Community Room
Reid Holein began & gave rules
He was the moderator, you get one strike, if you step over the line he will ask you to leave
Civil language, no outbursts
People will be called on to speak, given about 30 seconds for a question, if civil then he may allow follow-up questions
Fine to have signs, set them in front of you, don’t wave around
Can’t stop people from filming on their phones anyway so go ahead
Kristi said she usually started with an overview of what’s going on in DC, there was a PowerPoint projected at the front of the room that her daughter ran throughout the town hall. Skipped PPT and went straight to questions.
Question about Extension Ag Service funding – have had to defend for a long time, out of 435 members of the House only 36 represent rural districts; stated President Trump’s budget was a proposal – congress actually writes & passes the budget.
Someone asked if we could move to a larger location; they said there really was no other place in town with the gun show, craft show, St. Patrick’s Day events, etc. Kristi said there had been town halls she was not invited to (hosted by Indivisible 605 she said? Haven’t fact-checked.), or that she was invited to the day before they happened (ironic since there was no notice of this town hall until the day before)
Right to Life representative – what is her thoughts on the supreme court nominee; said she hasn’t met Judge Gorsuch but that he seems upstanding
First ACA/American Health Care Act question – rates/coverage, can she guarantee his rates won’t go up
Rates have increased by double digits, not lowered, remember members of congress are on ACA plans too
SD gone from 17 insurers down to 2, people are losing options
Current policies will stay in place for several years while they work to get the taxes & regulations worked out, give the markets time to change
People will be getting tax credits they can use to shop for plans ($2,000-$14,000)
“bipartisan” effort to reform – people objected – corrected to say bipartisan support for reforming ACA, current bill only put forth by the R’s because the D’s refuse to help them with
She rejects premise that plan costs HAVE to go up
Said she can’t guarantee anything
Second ACA Question about Congressional Budget Office review of plan, 25 milllion people losing coverage is very abstract, but 25,000 South Dakotans would lose – what does she have to say about that?
This does not reduce Medicaid/care coverage
14 million are? Or would be? CHOOSING not to have coverage
Mentioned the transition period again for the markets to develop, this bill is ‘Step 1’
Step 2 is the Health & Human Services Secretary to make changes, pull current regulations back – ACA said “the secretary shall” blahblahblah, so they’ll give HHS Sec the chance to do those things
Step 3 would be (presumably more legislation) allowing people to purchase across state lines, form their own associations to purchase group plans (group of farmers, group through a church given as examples)
Third ACA Question about Seniors, older people getting less of a tax credit than the subsidy they are currently getting, making coverage more unaffordable?
No- they’ll get that 2k-14k to shop for coverage, also reinstating national risk pools where high-healthcare-needs people can get coverage, funded differently than general health insurance, very sick people are covered together and general population doesn’t have to pay for their coverage,
Someone asked why not just FIX the ACA rather than scrapping it and starting over, she said she doesn’t think they can fix a failing system, as it progresses it just keeps heading us towards a single payer system which R’s are opposed to, the new bill gives power back to the people
Question about her ‘no’ vote on Violence Against Women Act
She has always voted yes – voted no one time when approached by SD Attorney General’s Office because of unconstitutional language
Asked what that was, said it was giving tribal governments the right to bring non-tribal members in to prosecute which she said they shouldn’t be able to do as a sovereign nation
Question about her radio comments that women are already treated equally so she doesn’t support the equal pay bills
She denied that, said as a woman with two strong daughters she fully supports equal pay for equal works, but believes in more transparency about what companies are paying people rather than mandates that hurt local businesses – SD has highest percentage of working moms in the nation, something about a bill in Ohio that calls for that transparency
Question about UN’s Bill of Human Rights calling for a right to healthcare – in light of proposed budgets and new healthcare bill – what about elderly, disabled, and children
Noem’s #1 responsibility is to the US and the oath to the US that she took, so that’s what she always looks at
Wants to get people off of ‘poverty programs’ and able to provide for themselves
Used to be 16 workers paid into social security/medicare programs for every 1 person covered, now down to 3 people in for every 1 that takes out; each person pulling out 4x more than they put in over their lifetime
More people in poverty now than when Obama first took office (??)
Wants to get people off of programs, especially people who don’t belong there
When asked about elderly, disabled, and children, as people who wouldn’t just be ‘getting off the programs,’ because they can’t….
From Cory Ann’s video: Question: “How can you talk about ‘we need to get people off these programs’ when that’s not a feasible option for these populations?” Noem: “It absolutely is, and that’s the kind of mindset that’s kept us here for the last 50 years.” ….”I don’t know anybody on those programs that want to stay there for the rest of their lives.”
Trumpcare – resistance from many groups, how will she suggest changes before she votes on this?
She said bill won’t stay the same as it is today, it not the forever fix, they can only do certain things at this time, she was on committee working to write it, so is happy to sit back and listen to feedback/fresh ideas from other people at this point
Border wall – Had map showing where there is already portions of a wall, talked about renegotiating trade agreements with Canada & Mexico
Real Estate question about mortgage rates/deductions – blueprint was out last year, bill will be coming out, she hadn’t looked at very closely yet but didn’t forsee major changes
Question from high school student! She’s on ways & means committee, has power to see tax returns from people, why not release Trump’s?
Committee has never been used to do that before, focus on policy not politics, don’t want to call out individuals – something about how his parents wouldn’t like it if they called for their returns. Kid responds “well, the difference between my parents and Donald Trump is that he’s the president, and they’re not….” Her response was again that there’s no precedent for it, “Ask him, ask his administration,” she wants to promote personal privacy rights
Russia question
No evidence of Russian influence on the campaign or administration
Audience follow up – “What about Michael Flynn?” Noem: “What about Michael Flynn? He’s not with the administration. You want me to comment on somebody who’s not with the administration?”
Debt Ceiling question – tough spot, because you want to pay military, etc. but can’t spend money unless you increase debt limits. 2/3 of federal spending is mandatory and automatic, 1/3 voted on by Congress, they’ve slowed spending since she’s been in office
NOAA & Coast Guard question – She looks at SD priorities first, hasn’t looked at the proposed cuts in those areas
Another health insurance question – No, there’s no provision that says insurance companies have to profit (someone heard there was $100 million set aside for this)
“Not necessarily everything you hear on the news is correct,” says she doesn’t spend much time watching news, gets updates from her staff, spends most of her time “gathering facts for real legislation.”
Another question about Trump’s budget – main point was that she should listen to what SD wants, and to not spend more money than we have, she invited us to tell her what we think, she is always willing to listen and be educated
Social Security/Medicare – not entitlements, what’s going to happen to them?
Programs are going broke, 10,000 baby boomers per day retiring
Programs need to be reformed, she recognizes they are different than “poverty programs”, but these all have a lot of fraud, especially within disability
Question about subsidies to wind industries – Xcel energy announced more turbines going up, people are abandoning their homes due to the noise, person asked her to quit giving them subsidies
New industries typically get tax credits or subsidies when they are just getting started, the wind subsidies are scheduled to phase out soon
Does she support the arts?
Have to prioritize spending, she loves & supports the arts, but can’t necessarily place it above over items in the budget, has heard that for every $1 of art spent there’s a $10 return, so it is a tough issue, but she has seen them auctioning off US Treasury Bonds to keep the government running and China is buying those bonds, so she doesn’t want to further the debt load for future generations even more
School lunches/Trump’s budget question
She has always fought for school lunches, got into Michelle Obama’s reform program about calories and sodium, people crying because kids weren’t getting enough food, she wants to keep federal lunch dollars in place though
Education question – thoughts on bill that would shut down Department of Education, what it will look like going forward, vouchers?
Most recent ed bill cut many stipulations on federal dollars sent to schools, sending money to the states and letting the states decide how it is best spent
She does not want the Dept of Ed eliminated, but it should be trimmed down, got into common core ‘mandate’ and getting rid of that.
Vouchers? She would have to look at but we do already have open enrollment in SD (not quite the same thing)
Russia take 2 – Rounds signed letter calling for aggressive response to Russia cyberhacking, what are her thoughts?
She supports that response but is not on intelligence committee
Climate Change/EPA
EPA doing things it shouldn’t be, she recognizes that we know climate change is , happening, but we need to look at how much human influence really is causing it, do a cost analysis – show the science behind the policies, but also look at what damage to/costs incurred by businesses and families
Her takeaways: healthcare, education, regulations, EPA, President’s budget
DC staff primarily focuses on legislation/policy, state offices do casework for citizens dealing with federal programs/agencies and advocating for them when there are problems
200-300 requests for events per day, work with offices to try and schedule town halls, etc.
Beth Hollatz, her state director: 605-878-2868, [email protected]
