“I love you, too”
Characters: Calum Hood x Reader
Summary: A trip to Calum’s house and an effort to help him get over his break up results in the both of you revealing secrets you’ve kept from each other for years.
Words: 2653
Warnings: Quite a bit of sadCalum and angryCalum, cute fluff at the end
A/N: This is my first fic! I’ve written before, but I’ve never really been confident enough in my work to post it until now. I previously used Wattpad, but I figured that Tumblr is a better platform to post one-shot imagines. I really hope you guys enjoy! LIKES AND FEEDBACK ARE VERY MUCH ENCOURAGED AND APPRECIATED!
i was also listening to all of youngblood as i wrote this and every single song is so fun and catchy! 10/10 recommend you guys should listen to it if you haven’t already! also i’m really sorry for any mistakes editing is the worst
A faint ringing caught your attention. In vexation, you got out of bed to look for whatever was coming in between you and your rest. After a few seconds of following the noise, you found that it was your phone crying out, begging to be answered. You groaned and trudged over to the device, hesitantly picking up the phone, not even bothering to check the caller ID.
“Hello?” You groggily answered, trying your best not to sound annoyed.
“Y/N?” Hearing your best friends voice, you sighed and attempted to rub the tiredness away from your eyes. “Cal? It’s one in the morning. Why are you still awake?”
“It’s Adrianna. She ended it again.” You brought your hand up to pinch the bridge of your nose, hoping it would relieve some of the stress you had instantly developed. You scoffed as a response, rolling your eyes in disbelief. “Ridiculous,” you muttered under your breath. You pushed yourself off of your bed, slipping on your shoes and grabbing your keys.
“I know you’ve had a long day at work today and you haven’t had much sleep, but can you please come over?” You smiled at the request, closing your apartment door. “I’m already out the door, Cal.”
You stood in front of Calum’s door, turning the lock with your copy of his house key. You walked into his kitchen, grabbed two spoons and a pint of rocky road, and headed to his room. You knew the drill.
"You know I love you,” you began, opening his bedroom door with your free hand, “but we’re gonna have to hit the gym if we keep devouring all this ice cream.” The distressed boy lying on his bed turned to look at you, and he let out a small chuckle. “You’re the best, Y/N.” You sent him a warm smile in response, waving his comment off. “You deserve the best, Cal.”
You plopped yourself next to the dark haired boy, handing him a spoon and grabbing the TV remote off of his nightstand. “Finding Nemo or Up?” I asked. Calum inhaled sharply as he removed the lid from the tub of ice cream. “That’s a tough one, but I’ll have to go with Up.” You grabbed a spoon and fed yourself a scoop as you played the movie.
As the heart-warming scene of Carl and Ellie’s married life played, Calum sighed and set his spoon inside the pint. “I wish I had what they had, Y/N,” he lamented. His face held an expression of exasperation, his usually bright eyes didn’t have that sparkle in them and his full lips pointed into a frown. You licked the remaining ice cream off of your spoon before speaking up. “What happened?” You asked. Calum ran a hand through his dark hair, shaking his head.
“Adri asked me if I could come over today since I’ve been working on the album with the guys the whole week and I told her that I would be there by 8. I was at the studio today and I thought we would finish up early today, but we ended past 11 again. I went straight to her place afterwards but all she did once I got there was interrogate me, and she accused me of cheating on her.” You immediately furrowed your eyebrows and scrunched your nose, almost in disgust.
“Are you kidding me?” You fumed. Calum shrugged his shoulders and looked down at his spoon as he fiddles with it, moving it around in the pint. “She said that it wouldn’t take that much time to make ‘a few lousy songs’ and that she ‘couldn’t believe she wasted her time on a cheater.’” Hearing these words made your blood boil and sent outrage flooding through your veins.
“First of all, how are you feeling?” Even though you felt like steam was coming out of your ears, you wanted to make sure Calum was okay first. He ran his hands through his dark brown locks once again, giving his hair an unruly look.
“I don’t really know. It’s a mix of everything negative. I’m upset, angry, heartbroken…” Calum trailed off. He shook his head and looked out his slightly opened window. “I don’t know what to do, Y/N.” You wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him into a tight hug, hoping that a few seconds in each other’s arms would calm both you and him down. As his muscular arms found themselves around your waist, you began to relax and felt your anger simmer down.
“Thank you for coming over so late, Y/N. For every time you’d be here when I need you, and for everything. I can’t thank you enough,” Calum spoke. You pulled away to face him, sending him a warm smile. You rubbed his shoulders, a small gesture to comfort him. “You never have to thank me for doing my job as a best friend. I’ll always be here for you.” His chocolate brown eyes regained a small sparkle and his pink lips formed a small smile.
“But, as a best friend, it’s also my job to make sure you’re happy.” You began to speak in a serious tone, “I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but I think you should just let go of Adrianna.” Calum’s head shot up and his eyes darted around, seeming as if he was scanning your face to see if you were serious.
“Cal, you and I both know how your relationship’s been going the past two months. You’ve been breaking up and getting back together constantly, and it feels like you’ve been fighting non-stop,” you stated, hoping you could bring him to the realization.
“I know, but the first few months of our relationship were so great. What if this is just a difficult time?” he tries to reason. You can’t blame the boy, you know how strongly he felt for her, you were there to witness it first-hand, but you can’t bear to see him like this.
“Calum, I know how happy she made you in the first few months, but does that even matter anymore? I’ve seen how you’ve been these last couple of months. I never hear you talk and rave about her like you used to, back when she used to make you happy. Every time you mention her, it’s always about something she’s complaining about or how stressed it’s making you.”
“I’m just going to ask you one question,” you began. “Is she worth it?” Calum just stayed quiet, processing the words you’d said. He was staring at the bed covers, and while it seemed like he wasn’t doing anything, his mind was racing with his thoughts. You gave him a few seconds to collect his thoughts, for the question you asked wasn’t easy. It took him a couple of minutes, but once he finally came to a conclusion, all he could manage to muster was one small word.
“No.”
He shook his head, and you looked into his eyes for confirmation. His eyes met yours, and with the most sincerity, he repeated his words. “She’s not worth it.” You took his hands in yours and whispered, “Then please, do yourself a favor and give up on her.” Calum exhaled sharply, taking his hands away from yours to rub his face in distress.
“I can’t, it’s not that easy.” You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion, asking, “But why not?” He took a deep breath, looking into the distance until his gaze met yours and spoke up. “Y/N, do you remember how it was all throughout high school? There wasn’t a single person who loved me for who I was.” You didn’t hesitate to speak up say otherwise. “I love you just how you are, Cal. You know that.”
He gave me a small smile, but continued to speak with hurt in his warm, brown eyes. “I know you do, you’re my best friend, but you know what I mean. You know how it was, Y/N. Every single girl I dated before Adrianna only liked me because of how I looked and the muscles on my body, and those relationships never lasted more than three months. No one liked me because I liked calculus, or because I liked spending some of my free time reading books in the school library or being in the music room.” You shook your head, disagreeing with his words. “C’mon, Calum. You know that’s not true,” You cut him off, trying to make him feel better.
“Then who, Y/N? Who actually loved me for the dorky, nerdy kid I was before the band happened? Before we actually made music and had fans?” Your heart hurt at his words, you didn’t know how badly your years in high school affected him. Still, Calum had you, Michael, Ashton, and Luke. That’s all he needed, right?
“But why does that matter, Cal? You’ve always had me and the guys. We’ve always loved you for who you are.” Calum laughed, but it scared you. It wasn’t the genuine, hearty laugh that was produced deep in his throat.
“You don’t get it, Y/N!” You jumped at his sudden outburst. He had raised his voice in a way he rarely used with anyone, let alone with you. “You don’t get it. Everyone found happiness and love in someone else. Luke, Michael, Ashton, and you! You all had someone to love, someone who loved you back, and someone you could call yours.” It was true, you’ve all been in a lasting relationship before, all except Calum. You just didn’t know that it bothered him that much. “Calum, I didn’t realize you felt this way.”
“Yeah, exactly. It’s always been like that, Y/N. Everyone around me was in love. Everyone around me was happy. Everyone except me, until Adrianna came along. I know I said that she’s not worth all the stress and the shit we’ve been going through, but Adrianna is the best I’ve got.” You felt a sharp pain in your chest seeing him like this, so hurt. You felt guilty. Guilty for not knowing how he really felt, but guilty for keeping a secret from him.
“I’m sorry you’ve felt like this, Cal. But I promise you, you can be so much happier if you let her go. You will find someone who can make you happier than you ever thought you could be.” He scoffed, shaking his head and conjuring an ingenuine smile.
“Like who? The fans? None of them know me! None of them know who I truly am, they just know me as the guy who plays bass in a group of ‘hot guys,’” Calum snapped. “Calum, stop it. You’re wrong,” you spoke calmly. Even though you weren’t yelling, you felt like your heart was going to beat itself out of your chest and your stomach would sink. Calum raised his voice once again, and it thundered through the room. “How am I wrong, huh?”
“Because…” you began, but hesitated. You’re about to tell Calum, your best friend, the secret you’ve been keeping from him for all these years. This is it, Y/N, you told yourself. “Because what, Y/N?” Calum barked. At this taunt, you spilled and everything poured out at once.
“Because I love you Calum! And no, I don’t just love you in the type of love that best friends have. I’m in love with you, and I always have been. I’d melt whenever you’d run to me smiling with a test you got a perfect score on or whenever you’d finish a book in a week back in high school. I’m in love with how kind and selfless you are, and every time I’d see you go out of your way to help some random person we’d see on the street or in the supermarket, my heart would swell. I’m in love with how passionate you are about your music and the way you smile after every single concert. And your laugh, God how I love your laugh. The real, genuine, stomach-hurting laugh you’d have whenever I’d do something stupid. I loved seeing you double over in laughter when I accidentally spilled mustard on my favorite top and I didn’t even care that I ruined it, because I would ruin a thousand shirts to make you as happy as you were then. I’m completely, utterly, and undeniably in love with you, Calum Hood, and I’ve been dying to tell you that.”
By the end of your confession, you were breathing heavily and your heart was pounding at a rate of 100 miles per hour. Finally revealing the one thing you’ve been hiding from your best friend for years took a toll on your breathing patterns, and you allowed yourself to regulate it. As your breathing and heart rate returned to normal, you scan his face for any type of reaction but you had realized that his expression didn’t change, the only signal that he heard everything you said being a slight twitch in his eyebrow.
You took in everything about the situation you had put yourself into. The person who sat in front of you, on the same bed, had hair sticking in every direction because he constantly ran his hands through them. His simple, black muscle shirt clung to his muscular torso, while his black jeans hugged his slim legs. You took in every detail about his face, his squared jaw was clenched, he had his pink bottom lip between his teeth, and his almond shaped eyes were boring into your own.
There had been silence in the room for about a minute, but it felt like years to you. In that minute, you hadn’t received a single reaction other than the twitch in his brow, and it was torturous. You had no idea what he was thinking about, nor how he was feeling. The only noise audible in the room was the sound of your breathing.
“You… you what?” He finally manages to get out. This was the first reaction you got since you confessed everything. You rubbed your shoulder and looked down at your hands, twiddling with your thumbs. You concluded that nothing would come out of it, for he didn’t feel the same way, so you began to ramble.
“Don’t make me say it again, Cal. I know you’ve never felt the same way, so I don’t expect anything to happen. Well, not that I was expecting anything to happen in the first place, but I already knew that I’ve alwalys been just a best friend to you and I’m sorry I’ve kept this from you for so long, but I didn’t want to ruin our friendship, because we’ve been so close for so long and I was afraid that telling you woul-”
“Y/N.”
You suddenly felt warmth on both of your cheeks, his hands bringing you to make contact with his eyes. I scanned every part of his face in hopes to find any type of emotion or reaction, but I only saw his blank expression. At last, your eyes meet again, his chocolate brown eyes dilated and brought warmth to your own.
His eyes were the last thing you saw before you felt a pair of lips against your own. His soft lips was connected to yours. It took you a few seconds to realize that you’d instinctively placed your hands on his torso, and once you processed what was actually happening, you were putty in his hands.
You gradually raised yourself up with your tip-toes, leaning further into the kiss as his lips slowly moved against yours. Calum moved his hands to your waist to support your much smaller figure, while you moved your hands to cup his jaw. Breathless, you finally pull away and rest your forehead on his, not being able to resist smiling widely.
“I love you, too.”
