We Got the Phone the FBI Secretly Sold to Criminals
The sleek, black phone seems perfectly normal.
Unlocking the Google Pixel 4a with a PIN code reveals some common apps: Tinder, Instagram, Facebook, Netflix, and even Candy Crush. But none of those apps work, and tapping their icons doesn't do anything. Resetting the phone and typing in another PIN opens up an entirely different section of the device, with a new background and new apps. Now in place of the old apps sit a clock, a calculator, and the device's settings.
Clicking the calculator doesn't open a calculator—it opens a login screen.
"Enter Anom ID" and a password, the screen reads. Hidden in the calculator is a concealed messaging app called Anom, which last month we learned was an FBI honeypot. On Anom, criminals believed they could communicate securely, with the app encrypting their messages. They were wrong: an international group of law enforcement agencies including the FBI were monitoring their messages and announced hundreds of arrests last month. International authorities have held press conferences to tout the operation's success, but have provided few details on how the phones actually functioned.
Motherboard has obtained and analyzed an Anom phone from a source who unknowingly bought one on a classified ads site last month. On that site, the phone was advertised as just a cheap Android device. But when the person received it, they realized it wasn't an ordinary phone, and after being contacted by Motherboard, found that it contained the secret Anom app.
The person Motherboard bought the phone from said they panicked "when I realised what I had just purchased." Motherboard granted the person anonymity to protect them from any retaliation.

When booting up the phone, it displays a logo for an operating system called "ArcaneOS." Very little information is publicly available on ArcaneOS. It's this detail that has helped lead several people who have ended up with Anom phones to realize something was unusual about their device. Most posts online discussing the operating system appear to be written by people who have recently inadvertently bought an Anom device, and found it doesn't work like an ordinary phone. After the FBI announced the Anom operation, some Anom users have scrambled to get rid of their device, including selling it to unsuspecting people online. The person Motherboard obtained the phone from was in Australia, where authorities initially spread the Anom devices as a pilot before expanding into other countries. They said they contacted the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in case the phone or the person who sold it was of interest to them; when the AFP didn't follow up, the person agreed to sell the phone to Motherboard for the same price they paid. They said they originally bought it from a site similar to Craigslist.
Another person Motherboard spoke to who bought one of the phones said they were in Lithuania.

"I bought this phone online, for ridiculously low price, now I understand why," that second person said. That person also provided Motherboard with photos and a video of their device. In that case, the Anom login screen appeared inaccessible, but other settings such as the decoy PIN code remained. "Probably this phone was used by some drug dealer :D," they said.
For the past few months, members of Android hobbyist and developer forums have been trying to help the people who bought the strange phones return them to a usable state.
"I cannot install any apps because there is no [App Store], everything has been removed," one person who said they bought the phone second-hand wrote on a German language forum in March, before the FBI and its partners stopped the operation.
"If he also had access to/data, he could change all of the cell phone's settings manually," one forum user replied.

"That's strange… You have the boot screen saying that the phone has been modified, yet you seem to have a locked bootloader… Doesn't make any sense to me :/," a user on another forum replied to someone facing similar issues.
"I have the same thing. A friend got a used pixel 4a and it's running arcaneos with the same issues described by the OP. Nothing works when attempting to flash," someone else added to the thread.
After Motherboard determined that ArcaneOS was linked to the Anom devices and had bought the phone, someone else on one of the forums also made the connection.
"This is a phone the used with that FBI ANON [sic] application to read the message with the users," a user wrote on a thread. That user did not respond to a request for comment on how they also came to the same conclusion.
The Phone
Besides ArcaneOS, the phone has a few other interesting features and settings.
Ordinarily, Android phones have a setting to turn location tracking off or on. There appears to be no setting for either on this device.
The phone offers "PIN scrambling," where the PIN entry screen will randomly rearrange the digits, potentially stopping third-parties from figuring out the device's passcode if watching someone type it in. The status bar at the top of the screen includes a shortcut for what appears to be a wipe feature on the phone, with an icon showing a piece of paper going through a shredder. Users can also set up a "wipe code," which will wipe the device from the lockscreen, and configure the phone to automatically wipe if left offline for a specific period of time, according to the phone's settings reviewed by Motherboard.
Encrypted phone companies typically offer similar data destruction capabilities, and at least in some cases companies have remotely wiped phones while they're in authorities' possession, hindering investigations. The Department of Justice has charged multiple people who allegedly worked for Anom in part for obstructing law enforcement by using this wipe feature.
Daniel Micay, lead developer of security and privacy focused Android operating system GrapheneOS, also provided Motherboard with images someone had recently sent him of a third Anom device. That phone was a Google Pixel 3a, suggesting Anom loaded its software onto multiple iterations of phones over time, and the Anom login screen was not immediately accessible.
"The calculator theoretically opens chat but it doesn't work anymore. They said it requires entering a specific calculation," Micay said. "Quite amusing security theater."

Micay said others claimed that Anom used GrapheneOS itself, but "it sounds like they may have advertised it to some people by saying it uses GrapheneOS but it has no basis."
"Basically [it] sounds like people have heard of GrapheneOS so these companies either use it in some way (maybe actual GrapheneOS, maybe a fork) or just claim they did when they didn't," he said.
The phone obtained by Motherboard and the one included in the video both have an identical list of contacts saved to the innocuous looking section of the device. However, at least some of these appear to be placeholder contacts generated by a specific tool available on Github. None of the people included in the contact list responded to a request for comment.
With its wipe features and the hidden user interface, the Anom device does look like one from any of the other encrypted phone firms that serious organized criminals have used in the past, such as Encrochat and Phantom Secure. That was very much on purpose, according to Andrew Young, a partner in the Litigation Department in law firm Barnes & Thornburg’s San Diego office and former Department of Justice lead prosecutor on the Anom case.
"We can't just run a good investigation; we have to run a good company," he previously told Motherboard in a phone call. That included providing customer service and solving users' tech issues, and potentially dealing with hackers who may target the company too.
Anom started when an FBI confidential human source (CHS), who had previously sold devices from Phantom Secure and another firm called Sky Global, was developing their own product. The CHS then "offered this next generation device, named 'Anom,' to the FBI to use in ongoing and new investigations," court documents read.
In June the FBI and its law enforcement partners in Australia and Europe announced over 800 arrests after they had surreptitiously been listening in on Anom users' messages for years. In all, authorities obtained over 27 million messages from over 11,800 devices running the Anom software in more than 100 countries by silently adding an extra encryption key which allowed agencies to read a copy of the messages. People allegedly smuggling cocaine hidden inside cans of tuna, hollowed out pineapples, and even diplomatic pouches all used Anom to coordinate their large-scale trafficking operations, according to court documents.
The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.

Virtual Villagers 5 is mostly about managing your village. Your secondary objectives include converting a bunch of heathens into followers, removing their totem poles and getting them to take off their masks.
The goals in this game are far tougher than they were for the fourth game in this series. The graphics have also been tweaked a little to make them a little smoother. The game has a hint of Populous: The New Beginning since you have god-like powers and have to command your followers. Gain points to grow your powers, and build your god-like skills.

You may read reviews claiming that this game is unique, but if you are a hardcore gamer or a fan of the Real-Time-Strategy (RTS) game, then you will recognise a lot of features in this game from other games. What is good about this instalment is that they have given you a little more freedom. It used to be that you had an objective and you had a seemingly single path towards completing that objective. You were railroaded into a solution with very little wiggle room, but with this game, you have more freedom to vary things.

Some fool decided that the villagers should repeat the same phrases when things need doing. It wouldn’t be so bad if they varied what they said as they do with Seven Kingdoms, but to hear the same grunting noises again and again is annoying.
You Have To Babysit The Game
As a player, you do have control over what happens, but for the most part your job is babysitting the village. It takes a very long time for things to happen, which means you also need a lot of patience. You have to be very careful when you play otherwise things fall apart. Speaking of babysitting, when a villager woman has a baby, then she cannot do anything else for two years, which is just dumb.
That Religious Thing
Some people do not like the idea that it goes the way of converting villagers from one religion to another. It is not so much the fact that you get to convert them organically--you have to invade and pull down their totem poles. It hits rather close to home for some people.

How to write your first blog or thought leadership content

One of the big buzz terms right now is ‘content marketing’. If you want people to engage with your business via your website or your social media platforms, then it pays to write great content. LinkedIn itself is one of the world’s largest publishing platforms where absolutely any of its 500million+ members can publish their content directly onto it. So that’s all very easy, you just write some content and publish it right? For many perhaps not.
If the thought of writing leaves you either nervous, scared or running for the hills, take a deep breath, calm down and let’s see if we can find some ways of helping you over that hurdle. Articles only need to be around 500-800 words. Somewhere in the middle is ideal as if they are too short it is hard for Google, or LinkedIn and their mythical and ever-changing algorithms to find it and index it. (If you find your mojo up to 1,500 is perfectly fine too.)  Now 500 words may seem a lot, however, if you break it down it isn’t that hard. So, let’s try and work through some practical steps to help you get your first article published.

Step 1 – Do not make it just an advert.
I’ve seen some pretty horrific posts and articles. They’ve had great titles and then I’ve clicked. Let me give you an example. The title was something like “Simple tips to help protect your small business from a Cyber-attack.” Sounded really helpful. When I went to this LinkedIn post it said, in the first 3 sentences something like” Cyber criminals are after your and your customer’s data, you are at risk and defenceless. To protect your business, you need our services and products. Click here to download our brochure” Big Picture of their company logo beneath it to boot. I didn’t click, I clicked off and went somewhere else for the info. Please don’t do this.
Step 2 – Get a topic.
Try to think about your area of expertise and what issues or problems people may be facing in that area. What advice or help can you give them in a blog that will help them face these challenges? To give you some examples, firstly, in the B2C world, if you sell secondary glazing, then it is likely that your target audience is interested in having warmer drier homes. So, write an article that gives people practical advice on how to do this over and above secondary glazing. For a B2B example, if you’re providing business accountancy services then write an article outlining the 5 or 6 simple steps any business owner can take to help keep their records up to date.
If you’re still struggling try Quora. It’s a great site, which is free to use, where people are posing questions they need help with. Using this can give you an idea what your target audience is concerned about so you can tailor your content to them.
Step 3 – Pick a title.
The old saying goes, you should never judge a book by it’s cover. However, Google certainly judges your blog by it’s title. Some of the cleverest titles may be mysterious and cool but the poor old search engines just can’t work out what it is and how to categorise it. A simple tip is that people are looking for help with their day to day tasks and operations, which is why headings like “X habits of successful people…” do very well.
There is a raft of sites which are designed to help you with picking SEO friendly blog titles. We like and use this one from Hubspot and this one called Title Generator.
Step 4 – Have a clear introduction
For many first-time writers, starting is the hardest part. So let’s break it down piece by piece to try and help you.
         i.            Talk about the main issue or problem you’re helping with. Keep this high level, so sentences like, “many people in the tech sector are faced with the challenge of..” You can bring in recent examples from the media if there are any, or even use Google to help you find stats to back up your case. (If you’re using stats then it pays to credit where they came from with a simple link.)
       ii.            Then give a couple of sentences around why people are finding this issue hard, and maybe show some empathy or understanding that it is a difficult problem.
     iii.            This is the important part: Make it clear to the reader what they will get from reading on. i.e. What advice or tips there are in the next 400-500 words or so. (Breathe easy, you’ve probably written the 1st 100 words in your introduction, so you’re doing well!)
Step 5 – Using bullet point or numbering
I’ve used 5 steps here, it is a simple and straightforward way of giving your article or blog some clear structure. Each bullet point should have a header; either write the header in bold or underline it to help it stand out. It gives clarity and the reader feels comfortable as they know what is coming next.
If you have 5 bullet point each say 80-100 words, then you’ve written at the very least the next 400 words. Which means you’ll have written approximately 500 words now so you’re done.
Within your bullet points, if one of your points links to one of your web-pages or one of your landing pages, then it’s okay to have that link for further information. But keep it as a nice to read, not a sales pitch. Sales pitches drive readers away.

Step 6 – Check the Grammar
It’s a good idea to write it in Microsoft’s Word as that will pick up a lot of typos and some grammatical mistakes. I would also recommend installing Grammarly, it is a great free resource that helps pick up on grammatical errors. To help make your blog more readable you can also use the free version of the Hemingway App. Finally, you can also use the oldest non-tech solution of all, ask a friend or colleague to proof read it for you. They can pick up on mistakes and also suggest improvements.
Step 7 – Close it out, what’s the main takeaway?
A short paragraph is all you need now. Just summarize the main points from the article, and leave the reader with one key point that they can action. In short, what is the one key piece of advice that your article gives?
Step 8 – Have a sign-off
Great for LinkedIn and other publishing platforms. Have an author’s bio of 2-3 lines, no more. Have a sentence or two encouraging sharing or commenting on your article. There is nothing better than your potential customers engaging in conversation with you online. Then if you have a service or product linked to your article, by all means at the end have a Call to Action (CTA). A simple line like “If you’d like help with…or want to know more about…then click here”.

“It’ll have everything our customers care about, all in one place,” they rationalize. “Our list will be different — people will actually look forward to getting our newsletter,” they argue. “Since we’re only sending it once a month, it’ll be a breeze to put together,” they say.
And while all of those things may become true for a few lucky individuals, lots of email newsletters flop. They become an uninteresting mush of content people automatically ignore, archive, delete, or straight up unsubscribe from. And this isn’t great for you, your metrics, or your company’s success. So if you’re thinking about creating an email newsletter, read this blog post and think really hard about whether that’s the right move for you in terms of your marketing strategy. If you’ve decided that you want to start an email newsletter, or you want to revamp one that’s not performing well, keep on reading. For instance, if your website features minimalist design and clean, plain black-and-white text, then you don’t want to create a super colorful newsletter, which might confuse new subscribers.  There are a few best practices, however, you can employ to ensure your design is up-to-par. Of course, you’ll want to A/B test whichever design(s) you choose, to ensure they resonate with your audience.  Here a few newsletter design best practices (although, again, the design should be industry and brand-specific): Clean, crisp images (no blurry images) Text (use same text throughout), company logo, and icons Try filters, memes, or video  Make the CTA clear and obvious — and just have one (i.e. “Click here to shop” or “Click here to read”) Create a hierarchy with CTA early-on  Mobile-responsive  Test the length of your newsletter to ensure it’s not too short or too long for your audience Of course, the design of your newsletter will depend on your brand, as well as the message. For instance, you might want to create a colorful, attention-grabbing newsletter if it largely focuses on visuals of new products — alternatively, if it’s a round-up of recent blog posts, perhaps you try a more minimalist look to mimic the appearance of a letter.  I’d also recommend looking into pre-made templates if you’re not familiar with designing emails. If you’re a HubSpot customer, you’ll have a bunch of pre-made templates in the email tool. However, if you’re still unsure about your newsletter design, there’s nothing better than looking at examples for further inspiration. 1. NextDraft NextDraft is a daily email written by a man named Dave Pell, which is a curation of the best web content of the day. As Pell describes it, “Each morning I visit about fifty news sites and from that swirling nightmare of information quicksand, I pluck the top ten most fascinating items of the day, which I deliver with a fast, pithy wit that will make your computer device vibrate with delight.” You can tell he’s a great writer. His copywriting is one of my favorite things about the newsletter. It starts with the subject line, which is usually a play on words or a clever one-liner on the top news of the day. It then extends to the body of the email itself, which is always descriptive, accurate, and clever. Finally, the minimalist design is fantastic. Not only is content delivery is clear, organized, and digestible, but also the inclusion of social share buttons underneath each story is brilliant. Rather than assuming that the reader is going to make it to a social sharing option at the bottom of the newsletter, Pell provides them with multiple opportunities throughout. Social engagement can play a big role in growing your newsletter, as every share on social opens up a valuable opportunity to attract more subscribers. We included this email newsletter on our list because it does what many ecommerce and consumer product vendors find challenging: promote good products with good content. In the newsletter example below, you’ll see how REI delivers many different types of material to its subscribers, and each type relates to one another. Following the seasonal product offerings at the top of the email, the company offers trainings to help educate readers on its new products and blog posts for even more insight into the outdoor lifestyle. Did you notice something else about this newsletter? It’s dedicated entirely to runners. Catering your email newsletter to a single audience — even if that audience belongs to an even bigger buyer persona — can help you tell a story in your email that resonates with the recipient from start to finish.
3. Austin Kleon Not to play favorites, but this newsletter from Austin Kleon is one I really look forward to. First, I love the simplicity. It’s not flashy, nor is it overly promotional. That’s the hallmark of a successful email newsletter: The most effective newsletters aim to educate, not sell. I also love the overall informal tone he takes, as it makes it feel as though you’re hearing from a friend. If you’re looking to lower the barrier between your company and your audience, consider using language that is friendly and inviting, not buttoned-up and jargony.

And it uses the below email newsletter as part of its customer retention strategy. The email below offers movie suggestions for the weekend, making it a well-timed newsletter if it lands in your inbox on Friday afternoon. In addition, its design is easy to digest, despite being so graphic-intense. Using numbered icons and consistent “Buy” and “Rent” CTAs in corners of each movie tile, the email compartmentalizes a lot of content while still connecting each movie to the FandangoNOW brand.
5. InVision InVision’s newsletter is a weekly digest of their best blog content, a roundup of their favorite design links from the week, and a new opportunity to win a free t-shirt. Not only is their newsletter a great mix of content, but I also love the nice balance between images and text, making it easy to read and mobile-friendly. They make great use of animated GIFs in their emails (which you can see when viewing the whole email here). I also love the clever copy on their call-to-action buttons: “Cat GIFs on Every Page” “Set Your Sights” “Why So Serious?” In addition to classic CTA buttons, they engage their audience at the bottom of every newsletter with a “You tell us!” text CTA.

Community.is Community.is is a handcrafted newsletter created for people who “put people at the center of their work.” This unique concept attracts a variety of readers from executives at ad agencies, to community managers at startups, to marketers and creatives of all shapes and sizes. In an effort to cater to their melting pot of subscribers, Community.is adopted a three-tier format: Short, Mid, and Long. While an executive may only have time to skim the short stuff, a marketer might be looking for a more in-depth read to spark some inspiration for their next campaign. Organizing a newsletter in this way helps ensure that you’re serving the distinct needs of your audience without it being too confusing.

The content ranges from the day’s top news to fun stories from all over the web. They do a great job balancing their own content with external sources, and the stories they choose are always really high quality. You can read Vox’s entire newsletter from start to finish and get a great sense of the stories they’re covering — but you can also click through to any of the linked stories to get a more in-depth approach.
8. Fizzle Fizzle’s newsletter is aimed at entrepreneurs who want weekly tips on building a business sent directly to their inbox and all in the email itself. Although they have a business blog and a podcast, what makes Fizzle’s newsletter unique is that the email content is independent from those other content assets. In other words, it’s written entirely for their subscribers. The copywriting style makes the newsletter unique and appealing, too: It’s casual, honest, and written like the author is writing to a friend. The writing gives off the vibe of real, down-to-earth business advice — without the fluffy stuff. At the same time, it’s written with clear headers and sub-headers to break it up, and the important stuff is bolded, making for easy skimming.
9. TheSkimm If you want to stay up on what’s happening in the world and have some delightful writing delivered to your inbox first thing in the morning, look no further than TheSkimm. It’s a daily roundup of what’s happened in the news in short, punch paragraphs. The best part? You don’t have to click out of the email to read the news if you don’t want to — although they do link to their sources if you want to read further. And when it comes to more complex news topics (think: Brexit or the Cannes Film Festival), they’ll cover the most recent updates but link to their Skimm Guides, located on their website. These guides provide context for larger topics, and are written in the same style as the emails. For your own email marketing, TheSkimm is the place to go if you’re looking for writing inspiration or for emails without much visual content.

Publishing on the site has really picked up in the past few years, and nowadays, there are a ton of people publishing posts on the site every day. Of course, that means there’s a lot of content for the average person to filter through. To help bring great content to the surface, Medium uses email newsletters. And after I open this newsletter every day, I end up going to visit several Medium posts without fail. (Mission accomplished for Medium, right?) Here’s why: The newsletter feels pretty minimal. Because of the way that Medium uses colors and section dividers, they’re able to give you a ton of content in one email without it feeling overwhelming. Plus, they offer both a daily and a weekly version of the digest, allowing users to opt in for the email frequency they feel most comfortable with.
11. BrainPickings BrainPickings is one of the most interesting newsletters out there. In fact, the folks who write it call it an “interestingness digest.” Every Sunday morning, subscribers get the past week’s most unmissable articles about creativity, psychology, art, science, design, and philosophy — topics that are really appealing to a wide audience. At its core, it explores what it means to live a good life. This is one of the longest newsletters I’ve ever read, but what makes it still work well is how high quality and well packaged the content is. While the content of the emails is certainly interesting, I’m especially digging the design. The blocks of color help break up the newsletter into sections that are easy to differentiate. I also like that the text calls-to-action at the end of each post’s description don’t just say something generic, like “Read this post.” Instead, they are matched with specific actions related to the post’s content, like “Get the checklist” and “Discover why you should test.”
[Click here to see the entire email.] 13. General Assembly There are a lot of creative things you can do with images in your emails, from designing your own custom graphics to creating animated GIFs. General Assembly, an organization that helps expand professionals’ skill sets, likes to employ tactics like these in their newsletter. From their attractive and minimal layout to their concise copy and helpful information, this is a great example of a newsletter that gives subscribers quick information in an easily scannable format.

(yes, the full stop is part of the brand name) is another great newsletter for finding — and sharing — the best and most entertaining content on the web. What makes their newsletter unique is that it isn’t just content curated by one person or one team; it’s content curated by a community of people on the internet. Members are allowed to share one, single link every day — presumably the best content they find the entire day. The result? “We’ve built something we hope will connect you to the best the web has to offer — all its weirdness and beauty and diversity and ambition,” reads the website. The newsletter consists of the editor’s picks from all the amazing content their community members have shared. Subscribers also have the option of signing up for a custom newsletter, which includes the editor’s picks and a custom feed from curators they can pick and choose. That’s some pretty cool personalization.
15. SaaS Weekly This is the ultimate SaaS newsletter, from a guy that kind of knows a thing or two about SaaS. (Hiten Shah is the co-founder of CrazyEgg and KISSmetrics). While his approach is simple, this roundup is packed with value and organized in a way that makes it easy to discover content around your specific interests. Shah does this by breaking the list of curated posts into different sections — Business, Product, Marketing Growth, Tip of the Week, etc. — which makes it easily scannable.
[Click here to see the entire email.] 16. The Ringer Remember Grantland, the sports and pop culture blog owned by ESPN that was started by sports journalist Bill Simmons? In October 2015, ESPN announced it would be ending the publication of Grantland. Shortly thereafter, Simmons formed Bill Simmon Media Group and recruited a whole bunch of former Grantland staffers to launch a brand new newsletter in March 2016 called The Ringer. Although The Ringer is written and run by many former Grantland employees it’s a different project than Grantland was. Where Grantland focused on sports and pop culture, The Ringer branches out into other areas like tech and politics. Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for President Barack Obama, is among the contributors. I like how focused they are on experimentation: “We want to have fun, take chances, analyze, theorize, obsess, and try not to take ourselves too seriously,” said Editor-in-Chief Sean Fennessey. Another differentiator? The Ringer’s website was developed in partnership with publishing platform Medium — which means the newsletter reflects that clean, minimal design.

Hacker Newsletter Many marketers don’t frequent Hacker News, but they should still check out this hand-picked curation of the social network’s top stories of the day. Why? The newsletter is clean and minimal, but still sends a ton of really great content its subscribers’ way. The way it distills potentially overwhelming information is by bucketing content into sections. The newsletter also looks very similar to the site, so for those who love the site and how it’s laid out, the newsletter feels like a comforting, familiar way to consume content.

Think about it: If you hadn’t been drawn in by the copy or design of the CTA, or been guided so eloquently through your sign-up process, you would probably use a lot fewer apps and websites than you do now.

1. Evernote
CTA Button: Sign Up
“Remember Everything.” Visitors can immediately understand that message the moment they land on this page. The design on Evernote’s website makes it super simple for users to see quick benefits of using the app and how to actually sign up to use it. Plus, the green color of the main and secondary CTA buttons is the same green as the headline and the Evernote logo, all of which jump off the page.
2. Dropbox
CTA Button: Sign up for free
Dropbox has always embraced simple design with a lot of negative space. Even the graphics on their homepage are subtle and simple.
Thanks to that simple design and negative space, the blue “Sign up for free” call-to-action button stands out from everything else on the page. Since the CTA and the Dropbox logo are the same color, it’s easy for the visitor to interpret this CTA as “Sign up for Dropbox.” That’s one effective call-to-action.
3. OfficeVibe
CTA Button: Subscribe
Here’s a slide-in call-to-action that caught my attention from OfficeVibe. While scrolling through a post on their blog, a banner slid in from the bottom of the page with a call-to-action to subscribe to their blog. The best part? The copy on the slide-in told me I’d be getting tips about how to become a better manager — and the post it appeared on was a post about how to become a better manager. In other words, the offer was something I was already interested in.
Plus, I like how unobtrusive slide-in CTAs are — as opposed to what my colleague Rachel Sprung calls the “stop-everything-and-click-here-pop-up-CTA.” I find these CTAs offer a more lovable experience because they provide more information while still allowing me to continue reading the blog post. 
4. Netflix
CTA Button: Join Free for a Month
One big fear users have before committing to sign up for something? That it’ll be a pain to cancel their subscription if they end up not liking it. Netflix nips that fear in the bud with the “Cancel anytime” copy right above the “Join Free for a Month” CTA. I’d venture a guess that reassurance alone has boosted signups. Also, you’ll notice again that the red color of the primary and secondary CTAs here match Netflix’s logo color.
5. Square
CTA Button: Get Started
To achieve effective CTA design, you need to consider more than just the button itself. It’s also super important to consider elements like background color, surrounding images, and surrounding text.
Mindful of these additional design components, the folks at Square used a single image to showcase the simplicity of using their product, where the hovering “Get Started” CTA awaits your click. If you look closely, the color of the credit card in the image and the color of the CTA button match, which helps the viewer connect the dots of what to expect if/when they click.
6. Prezi
CTA Button: Give Prezi a try
The folks at Prezi are also into the minimalist design look on their website. Other than the green dinosaur and the dark brown coffee, the only other color accompanying the predominantly black-and-white design is a bright blue — the same blue from their main logo. That bright blue is strategically placed on the homepage: the main “Give Prezi a try” CTA, and the secondary “Get Started” CTA, both of which take users to the same pricing page.
7. Full Bundle
CTA Button: Our Work
Full Bundle is another company that uses negative space to make their primary CTA pop. The white “Our Work” call-to-action stands out against the dark greys of the background. Their choice of CTA is strategic, too. Given that they primarily exist to build out clients’ online presences, it’s important for them to showcase their work — and that’s what most folks are going to their website for.
8. Panthera
CTA Button: Join
The folks at Panthera are looking for users who really care about wild cats around the world and want to join a group of people who feel the same way. To target those people in particular, we love how they use language that would speak to big cat-lovers: “Join the pride today.” The page itself is super simple: an on-page form with two, simple fields, and a button asking folks to (again) “Join.”

9. Huemor
CTA Phrase: ‘Launch (Do Not Press)’
If you went to a website and saw a “Launch” CTA accompanied by the copy “Do Not Press” … what would you do? Let’s be honest: You’d be dying to press it. The use of harmless reverse psychology here is playful, which is very much in keeping with Huemor’s brand voice.
10. Aquaspresso
CTA Phrase: ‘Send Me Specials Now!’
The whole point of a call-to-action is to direct your site visitors to a desired course of action — and the best CTAs do so in a way that’s helpful to their visitors. The folks at coffee company Aquaspresso really nailed that balance here with the pop-up CTA on their main blog page.
Here, the desired course of action is for their blog readers to check out what they’re actually selling (and hopefully buy from them). There are many ways they could have done this, including putting out a CTA that urges people to “Check out our most popular products!” or something very direct. But we love what they’ve done instead: Their CTA offers blog readers something much more helpful and subtle — an offer for “today’s specials” in exchange for the reader’s email address.
Adding that the specials are for today only is a great example of a psychological tactic called scarcity, which causes us to assign more value to things we think are scarce. The fear that today’s specials are better than tomorrow’s might make people want to fill it out and claim their offer while they can.

11. QuickSprout
CTA Phrase: ‘Are you doing your SEO wrong? Enter your URL to find out’
No one wants to be wrong. That’s why a call-to-action button like QuickSprout’s slide-in CTA on their blog is so clickworthy. It asks the reader, “Are you doing your SEO wrong?” Well, am I? All I have to do is enter my URL to find out — seems easy enough. It’s language like that that can really entice visitors to click through.
Plus, having the CTA slide in mid-blog post is a great tactic for catching readers before they bounce off the page. Traditionally, many blogs have CTAs at the very bottom of each blog post, but research shows most readers only get 60% of the way through an article. 12. Grey Goose
CTA Phrase: ‘Discover a cocktail tailored to your taste’
Here’s a fun, unique call-to-action that can get people clicking. Whereas site visitors might have expected to be directed to product pages or press releases from the homepage, a CTA to “Discover a Cocktail Tailored to Your Taste” is a pleasantly surprising ask. People love personalization, and this CTA kind of feels like an enticing game. The play button icon next to the copy gives a hint that visitors will be taken to a video so they have a better idea of what to expect when they click.
13. Treehouse
CTA Phrase: ‘Claim Your Free Trial’
A lot of company websites out there offer users the opportunity to start a free trial. But the CTA on Treehouse’s website doesn’t just say “Start a Free Trial”; it says “Claim Your Free Trial.”
The difference in wording may seem subtle, but think about how much more personal “Claim Your Free Trial” is. Plus, the word “claim” suggests it may not be available for long, giving users a sense of urgency to get that free trial while they can.
14. OKCupid
CTA Phrase: ‘Continue’
OKCupid’s CTA doesn’t seem that impressive at first glance, but its brilliance is in the small details.
The call-to-action button, which is bright green and stands out well on a dark blue background, says, “Continue.” The simplicity of this term gives hope that the signup process is short and casual. To me, this CTA feels more like I’m playing a fun game than filling out a boring form or committing to something that might make me nervous. And it’s all due to the copy.
15. Blogging.org
CTA Phrase: Countdown Clock
Nothing like a ticking timer to make someone want to take action. After spending a short amount of time on blogging.org’s homepage, new visitors are greeted with a pop-up CTA with a “limited time offer,” accompanied by a timer that counts down from two minutes.
As with Aquaspresso’s example in #10, this is a classic use of the psychological tactic called scarcity, which causes us to assign more value to things we think are scarce. Limiting the time someone has to fill out a form makes people want to fill it out and claim their offer while they can.
Curious, what happens when time runs out? So was I. Hilariously, nothing happens. The pop-up CTA remains on the page when the timer gets to zero.
16. IMPACT Branding & Design
CTA Phrase: ‘What We Do’
CTAs can feel really pushy and salesy if the wrong language is used. I like IMPACT‘s educational approach, where they challenge visitors to learn what the company does before pushing them to take any further action. This call-to-action is especially intriguing to me because they don’t even use an action verb, yet they still manage to entice people to click.
17. EPIC
CTA Phrase: ‘Let’s start a new project together’
The folks at the agency EPIC use their homepage primarily to showcase their work. When you arrive on the page, you’re greeted with animated videos showing some of the work they’ve done for clients, which rotate on a carousel. While there plenty of other places users might click on their site — including their clients’ websites — the main call-to-action stands out and always contrasts with the video that’s playing in the background.
I love that it features friendly, inclusive language — “Let’s start a new project together” — which gives a hint to users looking for a creative partner that they’re an especially great team to work for.
18. Brooks Running
CTA Phrase: ‘Find out when we have more’
How many times have you hotly pursued a product you love, only to discover it’s sold out? Well, as you might know, it’s no picnic for the seller either. But just because you’ve run out of an item doesn’t mean you should stop promoting it.
Brooks Running uses a clever call to action to ensure their customers don’t bounce from their website just because their favorite shoe is out of stock. In the screenshot below, you can see Brooks touting an awesome-looking shoe with the CTA, ��Find out when we have more.” I love how this button turns bad news into an opportunity to retain customers. Without it, Brooks’ customers would likely forget about the shoe and look elsewhere.
When you click on the blue CTA button depicted below, Brooks directs you to a page with a simple code you can text the company. This code prompts Brooks to automatically alert the visitor when the shoe they want is available again.
19. Humboldt County
CTA Phrase: ‘Follow the Magic’
Humboldt County’s website is gorgeous on its own: It greets you with a full-screen video of shockingly beautiful footage. But what I really love is the unconventional call-to-action button placed in the bottom center, which features a bunny icon and the words “Follow the Magic.”
It enhances the sort of fantastical feel of the footage, making you feel like you’re about to step into a fairytale.
What’s more, once you click into that CTA, the website turns into a sort of choose-your-own-adventure game, which is a fun call-to-action path for users and encourages them to spend more time on the site.
Balancing Multiple Call-to-Action Buttons
20. Uber
CTA Buttons: Sign up to drive | Start riding with Uber
Uber’s looking for two, very distinct types of people to sign up on their website: riders and drivers. Both personas are looking for totally different things, and yet, the website ties them together really well with the large video playing in the background showing Uber riders and drivers having a good time in locations all over the world.
I love the copy of the driver CTA at the top, too: It doesn’t get much more straightforward than, “Make money driving your car.” Now that’s speaking people’s language.
21. Spotify
CTA Buttons: Go Premium | Play Free
As soon as you reach Spotify’s homepage, it’s pretty clear that their main goal is to attract customers who are willing to pay for a premium account, while the CTA for users to sign up for free is very much secondary.
It’s not just the headline that gives this away; it’s also the coloring of their CTA buttons. The “Go Premium” CTA is lime green, making it pop off the page, while the “Play Free” CTA is plain white and blends in with the rest of the copy on the page. This contrast ensures that visitors are drawn to the premium CTA.
22. Ugmonk
CTA Buttons: Send me the coupons | I’m not interested
Exit CTAs, also known as exit intent pop-ups, are different than normal pop-ups. They detect your users’ behavior and only appear when it seems as though they’re about to leave your site. By intervening in a timely way, these pop-ups serve as a fantastic way of getting your reader’s attention while offering them a reason to stay.
Ugmonk has a great exit CTA, offering two options for users as a final plea before they leave the site. First, they offer a 15% discount on their products, followed by two options: “Yes Please: Send me the coupon” and “No Thanks: I’m not interested.” It’s super helpful that each CTA clarifies what “Yes” and “No” actually mean, and I also like that they didn’t use guilt-tripping language like “No Thanks: I hate nature” like I’ve seen on other websites. Finally, notice that the “Yes Please” button is much brighter and inviting in color than the other option.
23. Pinterest
CTA Buttons: Continue with Facebook | Sign Up
Want to sign up for Pinterest? You have a couple of options: sign up via Facebook or via email. If you have a Facebook account, Pinterest wants you to do that first. How do I know? Aesthetically, I know because the blue Facebook CTA comes first and is much more prominent, colorful, and recognizable due to the branded logo and color. Logically, I know because if you log in through Facebook, Pinterest can pull in Facebook’s API data and get more information about you than if you log in through your email address.
Although this homepage is optimized to bring in new members, you’ll notice a very subtle CTA for folks with Pinterest accounts to log in on the top right.
24. Madewell
CTA Buttons: Take me there | What’s next?
Madewell (owned by J.Crew) has always had standout website design, taking what could be a typical ecommerce website to the next level. Their use of CTAs on their homepage is no exception.
When you first arrive on the page, you’re greeted with the headline “I’m Looking For …” followed by a category, like “Clothes That’ll Travel Anywhere.” Below this copy are two options: “Yes, Take Me There” or “Hmm… What’s Next?” The user can choose between the two CTAs to either browse clothes that are good for travel, or be taken to the next type of clothing, where they can play again.
This gamification is a great way to make your site more interesting for users who come across it without having a specific idea of where they want to look.
25. Instagram
CTA Buttons: Download on the App Store | Get it on Google Play
Since Instagram is a mainly mobile app, you’ll see two black CTAs of equal size: one to download Instagram in Apple’s App Store, and another to download it on Google Play. The reason these CTAs are of equal caliber is because it doesn’t matter if someone downloads the app in the App Store or on Google Play … a download is a download, which is exactly what Instagram is optimizing for. If you already have Instagram, you can also click the CTA to “Log In” if you’d prefer that option, too.
26. Barkbox
CTA Buttons: Get Started | Give a Gift
The two CTAs on Barkbox’s homepage show that the team there knows their customers: While many people visiting their site are signing up for themselves, there are a lot of people out there who want to give Barkbox as a gift. To give those people an easy path to purchase, there are two, equally sized CTAs on the page: “Get Started” and “Give a Gift.”
As an added bonus, there’s an adorable, pop-up call-to-action on the right-hand side of the screen prompting users to leave a message if they’d like. Click into it, and a small dialogue box pops up that reads, “Woof! I’m afraid our pack is not online. Please leave us a message and we’ll bark at you as soon as pawsible.” Talk about delightful copy.
27. t.c. pharma
CTA Buttons: Find out more | View products
Turns out Red Bull isn’t its own parent company: It’s owned by Thailand-based t.c. pharma, a company that makes popular energy drinks, electrolyte beverages, and functional drinks and snacks.
Its homepage features two call-to-action buttons of equal size: “Find out more” and “View products” — but it’s clear by the bright yellow color of the first button that they’d rather direct folks to “Find out more.”
28. General Assembly
CTA Buttons: View Full-Time Courses | Subscribe
As you scroll through the General Assembly website, you’ll see CTAs for various courses you may or may not want to sign up for. I’d like to point your attention to the CTA that slides in from the bottom of the page as you’re scrolling, though, which suggests that you subscribe to email updates.
Although this feels like a secondary CTA due to its location and manner, I actually think they try to sneak this in to become more of a primary CTA because it’s so much more colorful and noticeable than the CTAs for individual classes. When you create your own CTAs, try using bolder colors — even ones that clash with your regular stylings — to see if it’s effective at getting people’s attention. 29. charity: water
CTA Buttons: Give by Credit Card | Give by PayPal
Charity: water’s main goal is to get people to donate money for clean water — but they can’t assume that everyone wants to pay the same way.
The CTAs featured on their homepage take a really unique approach to offering up different payment methods by pre-filling $60 into a single line form and including two equally important CTAs to pay via credit card or PayPal. Notice how both CTAs are the same size and design — this is because charity: water likely doesn’t care how you donate, as long as you’re donating.
30. Hipmunk
CTA Buttons: Flights | Hotels | Cars | Packages
When you land on the Hipmunk site, your main option is to search flights. But notice there are four tabs you can flip through: flights, hotels, cars, and packages.
When you click into one of these options, the form changes so you can fill out more information. To be 100% sure you know what you’re searching for, Hipmunk placed a bright orange CTA at the far right-hand side of the form. On this CTA, you’ll see a recognizable icon of a plane next to the word “Search,” so you know for sure that you’re searching for flights, not hotels. When you’re on the hotels tab, that icon changes to a hotel icon. Same goes with cars and packages.
31. MakeMyPersona
CTA Buttons: Grab the template! | No thanks
Here’s another example of a great pop-up with multiple calls-to-action — except in this case, you’ll notice the size, color, and design of the users’ two options are very different from one another. In this case, the folks at MakeMyPersona are making the “Grab the template!” CTA much more attractive and clickable than the “No, I’m OK for now, thanks” CTA — which doesn’t even look like a clickable button.
I also like how the “no” option uses polite language. I find brands that don’t guilt-trip users who don’t want to take action to be much, much more lovable.

How to Run a Profitable Giveaway
Running a contest or a promotional giveaway is one of my favorite ways for a company to connect with their customers.
But like so many other aspects of business, I see too many people doing this wrong.
That’s OK – for now.
While it may sound simple, promotional campaigns like this aren’t as easy as just picking a name out of a hat.
You want to run a giveaway that creates brand awareness and generates a profit for your company.
When done correctly, this won’t cost much at all.
Contests can even generate some free advertising for your brand.
This is especially true if you use social media as the platform for your giveaways.
89% of marketing experts said that social media increased exposure for their company.
In addition to exposure, social media marketing:
generates leads
increases website traffic
improves customer relationships
helps search rankings
That’s what you need to remember.
Giveaways are a marketing tactic.
So if you’re not using these tools to promote your brand and ultimately increase profits, you’re doing it wrong.
I’ve got plenty of experience in this space.
I’ll show you how to run a profitable giveaway and provide some examples for you to follow as well.
Figure out what kind of contest you want to run
All promotional contests are not the same.
There are three main types of promotions that you can do.
Contest
Sweepstakes
Lottery
If you’re running a contest, it means that the participants are doing something that requires some sort of skill and effort to win a prize.
Some popular contests may include a photo, video, essay, or caption.
The winners are selected by some sort of vote or judgment.
Here’s an example.
The picture that has the most likes will win this contest.
A sweepstakes, on the other hand, requires no skill, and it’s based completely on chance.
Winners get determined randomly.
Purchases, payments, and other considerations cannot determine the winner of a sweepstakes.
A lottery means that contestants made some sort of purchase or monetary consideration in order to participate.
For example, buying a ticket for a chance to be selected would count as a lottery.
Don’t do this.
In fact, state and federal laws have restrictions against these kinds of giveaways.
So it’s in your best interest to just stick to contests and sweepstakes.
Before you get started, ask yourself if you want to just give something away randomly or if you want there to be skill involved.
There’s nothing wrong with a sweepstakes, but personally, I think contests are more effective.
When your customers know that their efforts will increase their chances of winning, it gets them more engaged with your brand.
Choose the right platform
Now that you’ve decided whether or not you’re going to run a contest or sweepstakes, it’s time to figure out how where you plan to host it.
Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
Your website
Email
All of these are viable options.
In fact, you could potentially run the same contest through multiple platforms.
Select a winner on each one.
That could get your customers to participate more than once and increase your brand exposure even more.
Here’s an example of a website contest from Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.
It’s very professional and well written.
With that said, you don’t want to limit yourself by running a giveaway solely on your website.
How often do people visit your site?
Probably not as often as they use social media platforms.
That’s why I recommend using social media as the primary platforms for your giveaways.
It’s a great way to establish brand loyalty.
The people who follow you on social media are already interested in your business.
Running a giveaway here will peak their interest even more.
Plus, any actions that they take such as liking, commenting, posting, or sharing will get viewed on the newsfeed of all of their friends.
Set a deadline
It may sound simple or obvious, but you would be surprised how often I see this mistake.
Your deadline needs to be clear, for a few reasons.
Let’s say a customer or prospective contestant wants to enter your giveaway.
If they don’t see a posted deadline, it could turn them away.
This person may just assume that the deadline has passed, even if you haven’t chosen a winner yet.
You’re missing out on a chance of getting more exposure if this customer was going to share the information on their social media platforms.
Another reason you’ll need to post the deadline is to avoid late entries.
Pretend you’re running an Instagram contest where the winner is selected by the most number of likes on a photo.
You choose a winner but a few days later someone posts a picture that gets more likes than the one you selected.
This contestant contacts you for their prize.
Now what?
You’re put in a tough situation, and overall it’s not a good look for your company.
Adding a deadline to your giveaway is too easy for you to forget.
Look at the example above.
See how easy that was?
Next time you run a promotional giveaway, make sure the deadline is clearly posted.
It will save you some headaches down the road.
Make sure the rules are clear
Piggybacking off of my last point, you don’t want to have any confusion while you’re running the contest.
Depending on your location, rules may vary from state to state.
So you’ll want to make sure that whatever you’re doing falls within legal regulations.
Here are some things are commonly included as rules for a contest:
Eligibility (age, location, etc.)
No purchase required
Purchases don’t increase chances of winning
Dates (winner chosen and winner notified)
Judging criteria (for contests)
Privacy laws regarding the winner identity
Odds of winnings
If you’re running a contest on a specific platform, make sure that you’re compliant with those rules and regulations as well.
Here’s a link to the Facebook guidelines for running a promotion, which is definitely something that I recommend you review before getting started.
For example, you must acknowledge that your promotion is not endorsed, sponsored, or affiliated with Facebook (the company) in any way.
Facebook also prohibits using phrases like:
“share on your timeline to enter”
“post this on a friend’s page to enter”
“tag your friends to increase chances of winning”
So while you want to encourage posts and shares, just make sure you do it within the rules.
Here’s a snippet from TMZ’s contest rules and regulations.
The full page is much longer, but they clearly and thoroughly post everything to avoid any potential confusion, liability, or legal trouble.
If you have a long page of rules, consider providing a link to your website for a full explanation.
That’s more efficient than trying to post something as long as the above example as your Instagram caption.
The prize needs to be relevant
What are you giving away?
It needs to be related and appropriate for your brand and image.
Let’s say you’re a company that specializes in snowboarding and ski equipment.
Running a contest that gives the winner round trip tickets to the Bahamas doesn’t really speak to your audience.
Flying them out to a ski lodge in Colorado would make much more sense.
If you’re giving away a physical product, include a photo of it.
Telling the contestants that you’re giving away a new camera isn’t as effective as showing them the camera.
Here’s an example of a giveaway from Ticket Master.
It’s relevant.
You can buy tickets to sporting events on their website, so they’re giving customers a chance to win a trip to the Super Bowl.
Although they didn’t include an image of the actual tickets, the Super Bowl logo is just as effective.
Visuals speak to people more than words.
That’s why it’s important to incorporate them into your promotion.
Create a customized hashtag for your giveaway
Hashtags are one of the best ways to promote your brand on social media.
So come up with something unique that speaks to your company as well as the promotion.
If you’re having trouble coming up with something, you can use an online resource like Hashtagify to come up with related tags and trends for your industry.
Use that as a guide to create your own, but make sure nobody else has used it before, so there’s no confusion.
For those of you who already use hashtags successfully to promote your brand, make sure you come up with a new one for each contest.
Here’s a great example of how High Society Freeride used a unique hashtag to promote their giveaway.
Notice how they effectively used capitalization, so the hashtag pops and is easy to read.
#OneLifeMakeItCount reads much better than #onelifemakeitcount.
The hashtag can be the way you find a winner of a contest.
Just click on the hashtag to view all the pictures, videos, and posts.
That’s the easiest way to review and judge which entries were the best.
The hardest part about using a hashtag is just coming up with a creative one in the first place.
After that, it doesn’t require any effort or money from your company.
Hashtags can also increase engagement and make it easier for you to spread the word about your giveaway.
Make sure mobile users can access and participate in your contest
I mentioned earlier that you shouldn’t just run a giveaway through your website.
Keep mobile users in mind when you’re coming up with this marketing strategy.
Mobile users spend the majority of their time using apps.
So consider using platforms that are strictly for apps.
Instagram is a top choice for this.
Facebook and Twitter also have mobile applications, which is why earlier I recommended social media platforms as the top resource for giveaways.
If your company has its own mobile app, run your giveaway through there as well.
You can send users who downloaded the app notifications of the promotion directly to their phones.
Allow contestants to share the contest with friends and family
To get the most exposure, your giveaway needs to be shareable.
Earlier I mentioned that some platforms, such as Facebook, prohibit you from using certain statements to encourage sharing.
With that said, you can still include social sharing icons on your website.
Here’s a great example of how Fatherly did this to promote their sweepstakes.
Again, the whole idea behind this giveaway is to turn a profit for your company.
Allowing users to share this content will drive more traffic to your site and potentially improve conversions as well.
Notify everyone when you’ve selected a winner
This relates back to what we talked about earlier about establishing a timeline.
Take your deadline one step further.
For example, the date for participants to enter your promotion may be the last day of the month.
However, it could take you up to a week or two to go through all of the entries and select a winner, especially if it’s a contest with lots of participants.
So make it clear when a winner has been announced.
Look how Starbucks does this to announce the winners of their red cup contest.
Make sure you have the winner’s consent if you’re going to reveal their identity.
All of that should be clearly outlined in the rules (which we discussed earlier) to avoid any problems or confusion.
Conclusion
Don’t run a giveaway without a clear goal or reason.
Like every other business decision you make, this will require some thought and planning.
First, you need to determine which kind of giveaway you’re going to run.
If you want the winner to be completely random, you should hold a sweepstakes.
Contests are better if you want there to be some sort of skill, voting, or judgment involved in determining the winner.
Run the contest on multiple platforms.
Social media works best for establishing customer loyalty and increased brand awareness. It also makes the promotion more shareable.
Set a deadline and clearly post all of the rules for your giveaway.
Make sure your prize is relevant to your brand.
Creating a unique and customized hashtag will help you promote your brand and get more recognition.
When it’s over, make sure you announce to everyone that a winner has been selected.

Spreaker makes improvements & merges with Blog Talk Radio
After my detailed review and article about the new radio (including podcasting) from February 2017 (link ahead), Spreaker has already implemented 1.5 of my suggestions. The Italian-based company recently merged with Blog Talk Radio, so the expanded enterprise now has offices in multiple continents. Ahead are details about 1.5 suggestions Spreaker has made a reality, plus another improvement I didn’t request. I’ll also clarify a very sensible policy change it has made in the deployment of Spreaker’s optional custom Android app, which continues to be branded with the show’s name and logo.

Spreaker has added an option to hide stats from public view
This is very good, although it wasn’t one of my suggestions. Now it’s up to the content producer whether or not stats a publicly visible.
Spreaker offers option for unbranded embeddable web player (without Spreaker branding)
For those who read my February 2017 article review, this is my suggestion 1, part 3. Now any Spreaker user at the Broadcaster plan or higher can elect to remove Spreaker branding from the embeddable web player. This is wonderful. Spreaker calls it “white label”. Although it wasn’t clear from Spreaker’s first announcement, after asking, they clarified that even after removing the branding, there is still a link to the live chat (if present), which is an included option for any new radio producer who broadcasts live and wants live interaction with listeners.
This live chat feature was already available and covered in my February article/review, both on the radio show page at Spreaker.com and in the optional branded app for Android and iOS. The live chat is still not an integral part of the embeddable web player, but the embeddable player has a link to it.
Spreaker adds compatibility for third-party stats like Podtrac, but with “leaks”
Spreaker has fulfilled my suggestion 2 half way. So far, the feature unfortunately it comes with “leaks” for someone who currently self-hosts (like my CapicúaFM show) and is considering migrating to Spreaker, due to its unique features of live broadcasting and extremely inexpensive branded Android and iOS apps (US$99 per year, per platform).
When I say “leaks”, I mean that the compatibility with Podrac only works on the RSS feed from Spreaker, not when episodes are played through Spreaker’s own players (web, widget or mobile apps). This is enough reason for me not to migrate my CapicúaFM show to the Spreaker platform (yet). As of publication time of this article, CapicúaFM has reached 295,025 listeners according to Podtrac. I am not willing to reset the odometer to zero, nor am I interested in excluding the listeners who are would hear from Spreaker’s web, widget or mobile apps. However, I do recommend Spreaker for a brand-new show, especially given its extremely inexpensive branded apps for Android and iOS, and its live broadcasting capabilities.
Spreaker changes the submission process for Android-branded show apps
In my February 2017 article/review, I went into detail about the advantages of branded apps for Android and iOS. At that time, the US$99 price per platform per year covered creation, maintenance and submission to the respective store (App Store for Apple and Play Store for Google) under Spreaker’s developer account with each one in the case of Android. This recently changed. As described by Spreaker:
We’ve decided to have our users create their own account on Google Play store and help them publish the app on their account. We did this in order to “sandbox” every user against potential violations to the ToS made by other users in the store (Google reacts pulling down all the apps in the same account – so if a user all of a sudden does something that Google doesn’t like, for example creating some questionable content, everybody else would be at risk). Nothing changes in the US$99/year subscription, though we are pinging all the users to quickly migrate their app to their own managed account. (It’s a simple process and then you just give us some management privileges and we can publish and update the app on your behalf).
In addition to that advantage (no risk of takedown because another show is at fault), the branding in the Play Store can also match the content producer’s brand name or network name.
For the moment, there is no suggested change in the handling of the custom iOS apps from Spreaker.
