while n is attached to all his pokémon and he has an extremely strong bond with them all it is undeniable that the bond he shares with cannoli, his zorua, is far more intense than it is with the rest of his partners and it has to do with her background—— because she has always reminded him of himself in a way that he’s never been able to relate to when it comes to any other existing being, regardless of if they’re human or pokémon.

cannoli, much like n, was abandoned in the forest while still extremely young, for being different. i’ve mentioned this before but she’s shiny, so instead of parts of her fur being red they’re this soft teal color. she’s also nearly half the size of the average zorua, which had surely made her the runt of the group among her siblings and was also another point of hatred amongst her parents because how was she going to be capable to defend herself in the wilderness if she stood out like a sore thumb and was miniscule? all her existence would do is weigh them down. in the wild only the most capable creatures survive and cannoli was not one of those up until her partnership with n. in a way they are mirrors of each other.

n was, unfortunately, adopted by a man who has only ever seen him as a tool to accomplish his ambitions and because of that n had to endure lots of psychological, emotional and physical abuse. cannoli, instead, was taken in by n, who has experienced the worst of the worst and broke the cycle of abuse by treating this defenseless little thing like a treasure instead of a pawn. were it not for her being abandoned by her parents at birth she would have definitely endured a miserable life but instead she was found by someone who does nothing but pamper her and treats her like a daughter opposed to a companion. they saved each other.

yes, n unironically calls her his daughter. there are definitely people out there that think he has a child because he doesn’t mention that she’s … a pokémon. ( n can’t have biological children in general but that’s not really important regardless. he wouldn’t want any anyway, his hands are full enough with cannoli. )

and because of this she is ridiculously spoiled to a fault. she’s never once been told, ‘no’ in her life and n lets her walk all over him. he’s somewhere important but cannoli wants to go home? he’s leaving immediately. he’s trying to save money but cannoli wants the new shiny, expensive toy that’s just hit the market? god forbid his babygirl doesn’t get that toy NOW. he’s at her beck and call. she’s the only companion he takes EVERYWHERE because she has severe separation anxiety that stems from the fact that n has been caring for her since the day of her birth and she has imprinted on him. she quite literally sees him and thinks of him as her dad despite them being completely different species. ( she does, in fact, call him, ‘dad’ when she speaks to him. never, ‘n’ always, ‘ dad’. )

as of the bw main canon storyline she’s only a few months old, it’s not long after the protagonist meets n that he’s found her and has taken her in, she simply isn’t considered part of his main team until way later during the dragonspiral tower events because she’s still just a baby. ( even at the end, when everything is said and done, n is paranoid about letting her fight so he tends to avoid involving her, instead his zoroark, tiramisu, is sent into battle with cannoli as her cheerleader of sorts. tiramisu also plays an incredibly important role in n’s backstory and is frankly the reason he does not straight up lose his mind but that’ll be elaborated on later! )

he takes his job as her caretaker so seriously. he couldn’t save himself from being forced to endure all that torture for years but as long as he can shield cannoli from the reality of the world then he’s doing a job well done and that’s all he cares about.

was kinda thinking about this when I saw Renee Rapp live recently-- I didn't know her visual vibe, I'd heard a few songs here and there but I hadn't really *seen* her, and her attire at Osheaga was really casual, a jersey (baseball/basketball?) and slacks. And that was so amazing! I couldn't help thinking, the work Billie Eilish has done for how women in pop music are allowed to dress is incredible. Seeing her up there all comfortable you just know that Billie walked in her oversized tops so that Renee in her slacks could run; Billie walked through all the critcisms about how she dressed slobbily and having to assert that she didn't owe anyone a display of skin, so that Renee could be comfortable and unquestioned running up and down the catwalk in front of 10,000 people. How iconic.

And I don't think we even realised at the time how much something as simple as letting Billie dress the way she as a (then-) 17-year-old teenager dressed, could end up meaning for a future generation of women in music.

Obviously there is still way to go, there were weirdos complaining about how 'plain' Dua Lipa's Glastonbury outfit was this year (in 2024!!), l have to ask, are you at Paris Fashion Week?? She is the musical HEADLINER of an entire day of music at one of the biggest music festivals in the world, and you can't grant her the space to exist as an artist, you have to moan about her dress not being excitingly revealing enough. There's work to do, it's still dismal out there. But the space Billie Eilish has created for a most ordinarily-dressed woman popstar is still heartening.

Characters baring a mouth full of sharp fangs as show of aggression is top tier but can we talk about how sinister a flash of smooth square omnivore teeth can be. The implications therein? The difference between facing a carnivore vs a member of the terrifyingly, aptly named 'opportunistic eaters'? The fear of being on one's menu, the knowledge that you are on the other's - no matter what you are. The inherent danger of a threat display where there are set rules to avoiding harm turning into a hunt on a dime.

The Doctor cornering Gene to warn her about The Master. How he will most certainly be the death of her. And she just laughs, refusing to be “saved”…

The Doctor seeing Gene… multiple times, across multiple faces… outlasting his own companions, maybe even one or two of his own regenerations… Somehow, impossibly, she remains by The Master’s side… It’s like she’s mocking him. The impossibility of it driving him mad.

The Doctor needing to get The Master’s attention for one reason or another… and tracking Gene down, because like it or not, he has finally accepted her as a constant. A fixed truth. The Master will ALWAYS turn up again. And despite every warning, every near death experience, every tragedy, Gene will ALWAYS be by his side.
