I mostly think comparisons between Punks and Hippies is rehashing beef from 1976 but my mom is extremely hippie adjacent, and it has never stopped her from being Conservative, transphobic, ableist (the latter two to me!) and just generally reactionary. Expecting any sort of subculture like to elicit meaningful politics is usually a dead end, I think.
I think the counterculture movement is ever changing, ever shifting, like water. Someone who was daring and revolutionary in 1965 looked like a hippie, but now that stuff is mainstream, so a lot of people who aren't actually that open-minded adopt the popular aesthetic once it isn't so shocking. It's the way someone reacts to something unfamiliar that shows their true colors.
