just understood a little of what moms experience when the teacher tells them their kid is a pleasure to have in class bc the vet just told me lucy was the best behaved cat they had all morning and a pleasure to deal with
#the funny thing is lucy is less likely to bite and scratch a stranger than she is to bite and scratch ME#she has to be comfortable in order to get violent. flattering <3#vet: 'she has lost a bit of weight but nothing to worry about really' me (horrified): 'last time i was told to give her half the amount of#food i had been given her so that's why - should i have not?' vet delighted: 'oh you did it? that's very good!!' me still horrified: 'no#i mean you told me how much and what i just followed what you said i didn't do anything else' vet: 'oh yeah but it's great that you actuall#followed what i told you bc people rarely do what we ask of them' 'ah.....'#what do you mean people dont put their cat on a diet if the vet says so?? i myself do not follow doctors orders but when it's about ME. not#when another creature's health is on the line????? especially when it is 100% dependent on me like??? what is wrong with people

Hi! Hope you're doing well <3 I been reading some of your posts about LO and Greek culture in general! And as a non-greek I think your culture is amazing and it should be respected as any other culture, so, I had this question a little while ago
I made a couple of characters based on greek myth creatures, and I kinda had a story for them in an ancient greek inspired world (highly inspired tbh, I think it might take place in an ancient greek ambience as well), but now I think that might be insensitive (?) I don't know how to express it, but I just want to know, would it be ok if I continue with that idea or should I scratch it?
TIIIME TO FINALLY ANSWER THIS
I am really sorry for the long wait! I was trying to think how to answer this properly and also mustering the energy for it xD I will pin it so you can find it more easily, if you come back to the blog.
For starters, you can write whatever you wish. I am hesitant to say to people “you can't write this and that” because it might make people feel estranged and uncomfortable and I believe that distance serves no real purpose. Yes, it’s likely that a xenos won’t be making the story VERY culturally accurate but if the story is 30% culturally accurate as opposed to barely 5% which we see in the popular media today, then it’s still a win. Not to mention that Greeks themselves are not 100% culturally accurate most of the time in their Greek mythology stories. This happens because 1) Americanization has hit us hard 2) They write them just for fun without bothering to research much. We are also lucky if we have a 30% accuracy in our texts most of the time.
(I love percentages if you can’t tell 😂)
You might have figured out I have the tag #writing (and perhaps also #writing advice ??) where I answer these type of questions, so visiting it might help! I'm not gonna tell you if you can write it or not - you can write whatever you like - but I would advise you to treat the Greek culture like any other real or fictional culture. Do a proper “worldbuilding”, let’s say.
THE CREATURES
As you know, some are more serious and some are more playful. They don’t easily “switch” from their behaviors so it’s best to keep a serious creature serious and a playful creature playful throughout most of the story. Some reading is needed, to figure out how the ancient Greeks saw those creatures. Because assumptions are usually not helpful. If we have no clues about their behavior, that’s free real estate I guess 😂
Now, if you are going for the “almost like Greek culture but not quite” thing, that still needs similar studying. You need to know where you are basing those creatures and how they see their world - or how the world sees them. And what elements make sense to change.
You can still not base the characters nowhere and just have a gal with snakes in her head. You can do that xD However, if you like to be more in touch with the culture you need to use some context and the “ambience” you talked about. It’s another thing to say “this gal has snakes on her head“ and another to say “this is THE Medusa“.
Some Greek culture needs to shine through. I mean, it would be great if it could shine though in general, so your references and basis to Greek mythology are better. It would be safe to assume the ancient folklore creatures have some Greek culture in them since they have Greek names, they have been written in Greek stories behaving according to the Greek societal rules and ethics, and generally being symbols in Greece until our days. And your story is about Greek mythology, so you want to emphasize the Greek aspects of your heroes and world.
THE ANCIENT GREEK INSPIRED WORLD
I don't know what research you’ve done so far but I will begin from the basics anyways. Ancient Greek ambience, as you can probably guess, is not “chitons, wine, vines and white pillars” 😂 The ambience specifically doesn’t come from the aesthetics but from the feel of it - the food, the customs, the symbols, the dances, the language interjections, the behaviors and values. Parts of the culture are also how is reverence and modesty are expressed, what makes someone present “manly“ or “feminine”. So, it’s gonna take some research.
People usually write some of the aesthetic and think they are covered, even though their worldbuilding is bad, precisely because they have only presented the very top of the iceberg. No food, no dances, no certain behaviors, nothing. You could say they are “soulless Disney remakes”. 😂 You can also do that, but you need to know how it will come out. It might be quite bland and, if I am not mistaken, you said you want to avoid that. (And I think most of Greeks would tell you that they don’t mind a Greek “soulless” remake but it would be super extra great if you put cultural elements in).
Ok, I don’t mean make it like an encyclopedia, but presenting some stuff from the culture is how you get the ambience. You might as well take a writing advice list for worlbuilding stuff you must have and see which ones you can find irl from the Greek culture.
Important! Remember that nearby cultures affect each other, so if you change one element from the Greek culture it’s likely it has to be changed in other cultures next to your area. If wearing green makes you manly in Imaginary Greece, it will also make you manly in Imaginary Turkey and Imaginary Bulgaria, let’s say. (there is no “ancient Turkey” or “ancient Bulgaria” as countries - and depending on the era, “ancient Greece” is also not a thing - but you get my point xD)
For the interpersonal relationships/interactions, you can read some ancient translated texts presenting daily life situations of the ancient Greeks (start from Googling stuff, I really don’t have sources for that xD). It’s very likely that the ancient sources won’t give you a very defined feel (try it anyways, if you like). Therefore, I suggest you see interactions of modern Greek people.
Worry not! YouTube - through me xD - has you covered! Searching the tags #greek tv #greek youtuber #greek podcast and #video. On youtube you can even find vlogs of people visiting Greece and see interactions with the locals. (If you have trouble finding them, you can send me another ask).
Similarly, it might take months to find all the Greek language interjections so you can go for modern ones. Besides, many interjections like “popoo“ are ancient. Besides, if you are not making a very “serious” story, the modern touches might help it feel more in touch with the present.
Surely, people are people everywhere and humans between countries share cultural traits, but there are some slightly more predominant stuff depending on the culture. Cultures close to each other share more traits, so, if you can’t find any Greeks around, you might be able to find our neighbors. Middle Eastern, north African, or south European people (and Hispanic/Latino Americans!) around might help to understand the dynamics between friends and family members. If you already belong to some of those cultures, congrats, you have most of the formula figured out!
I gave so much space to the interpersonal relationships because that’s gonna give you an idea where the line of “respect” is. Surely, the ancient interpersonal relationships won’t be like the modern American ones 😂 There is no way a student goes to Chiron being like “hey, man, how you doin?” Knowing how Greek teachers were, as late as the 20th century, that’s gonna earn him a slap 😂
Another thing: saying “Good morning” and “good afternoon / goodnight” when you first and last see people in the day is VERY important and the best social practice! You won’t be considered rude if you don’t say them but in a slightly formal and especially professional environment, better use them. (Other modern Europeans also consider this a good practice.)
The most ancient greeting of Greeks is “be happy” (χάιρε / χαίρετε) but health is also very important and is another old greeting. Xάιρετε is more formal in our days and Γεια/Γεια σας ("have good health”) is the most used formal and informal one. Seeing how people wish health in the middle east, it might be that the Health thing has been here for centuries. Also, if you break something or something bad happens to you, we say “health” because having your health is more important than anything else.
Fun fact, “Charon“ (Χάρων) probably means “the happy one” :P It has the same root with (χάιρε / χαίρετε).
Many other social cues can be found in the tags I mentioned, but you can send me an ask if you need to know something more specific!
As for the food, you can find ancient recipes and even use modern ones (which are usually with the same ingredients). Same goes for dances and symbols. You can google stuff about them, go on Google Scholar and search there, as well. (Also, google pages where you can download those papers for free ;) ) Please do some cross examination to make sure that this element indeed exists and it’s not just one person pulling it our of their a**. 😂
If you can’t find info, you can lean on modern symbols and dances. The dances are similar through the centuries anyways. No one is going to come for you if you say you based an element on a modern Greek thing bc the ancient one was impossible to find with the resources available to you.
I don’t have many more things to add on these cultural elements because I already have tags for the modern ones. #greek cuisine #melomakarona #greek dance #greek custom #greek tradition etc.
And, last but not least, research the weather!! I can't stress this enough 😩 We are not a desert and we are not the Tropics. If your weather is similar to the Greek one, then your creatures most likely will need some serious covering in Autumn and Winter 😂
All in all, it’s certainly not a piece of cake to write about other countries and cultures but, if they are open to let you in, you can learn stuff and do your best depicting them. It might not be perfect (and no work is actually perfect) but it would be a step to the right direction and might encourage more writers to do the same - instead of throwing some chitons in and calling it a day xD
If you have any other questions feel free to send me another message (dm or ask). You - or anyone else - REALLY WON’T BOTHER ME if you ask me many questions on my DMs or here.

Time to commence -- Operation Half Ass
I love organizing my fitness. I love mapping it all out. And, I love working toward those goals. Working toward these goals — whether their weight-loss or running related — is something I love and need.
After my ‘More Grease for Greece’ campaign that I did from August to November to help me lose 35lbs. with the keto diet, I feel the need to hone in on my diet and workout regime, especially now that I know what I’m dealing with regarding my ankle.
I am still doing the keto diet. I’ve been on it ever since I got back from Europe. I’ve lost about another 5lbs., but for the most part I’ve stalled a bit. And, I know why. I need to refocus myself and be more meticulous with my approach, numbers and intensity. I’ve been here before and I know what it takes to get past these plateaus.
But, these last 20lbs. toward my goal weight will be the toughest. It’s going to take a lot of discipline and focus. And, to help me I divided my focus into three specific areas … weight loss, diet and training.
They’re all listed below with a bit more detail. But, the goal is to really focus in on these three areas for the next six weeks — leading up to my next half marathon (Riverton Half, March 24). I won’t be ready to run a killer half marathon, but I’ll be in a better situation than I am right now.
So without further adieu, here are my three focus areas in what I’m calling ‘Operation Half Ass’ …
FOCUS #1: LOSE 20LBS
I have stalled in my weight loss since December. This was kind of expected and I am not too worried about it, because my workouts and runs have been less consistent and intense with my injury recovery. But, I feel like I am turning that curve, especially now that I know how to tackle my recovery.
I am sitting between 245-250lbs. — depending on the day — and I really want to get back to the 225-230lbs. range. When I was at my “best” — I was in that range. My lowest ever — well, in my adulthood — was 218lbs., but that 225-230lbs. range was where I peaked with my performance.
I’d like to get back to that.
That means I need to lose 20-25lbs. to get there. Which will be tough. The last 20-25lbs. of any weight loss goal is tough. And, this is the part of the game that I am going to have to do things differently in my running and workouts than I have the past 4-6 months. Which is fine. But, that requires a change in focus, mentality and commitment.
I’ve been here before — which helps. The key like anything in life is sticking to it and being tenacious with your goals and focus.
FOCUS #2: COUNT TOTAL CARBS
Being a keto discipline is tough. For me, it’s not so much avoiding carbs, but it’s how in I fuel myself with the needed carbs throughout my day. Most of my carbs come from vegetables — namely salad — lettuce, green peppers, onion and the carb here and there that you can’t avoid in most foods.
Depending on who you ask, some ketoers count total carbs, while others only count net carbs (total carbs – fiber). I’ve always counted net carbs. It’s worked for me as I keep my daily carb total at 25-30 net carbs.
Is that too much?
Probably?
In reality I am probably getting 35-40 total carbs. I’ve been in ketosis, but lately it’s been a struggle keeping myself there. After talking to a few keto friends — this is probably why. So, I am switching from counting net carbs to total carbs.
The thing I do have to watch is my carbs — most ketoers shoot for 20-25 grams a day, but my doctor wants me to be around 25-30 grams because of my Hashimoto’s Disease. Being the Google stalker I am, I’ve seen that suggestion all over online for Hashimoto Ketoers — and since the goal is to have a healthy thyroid and not necessarily get cut and lose weight, I feel that I should follow those guidelines.
So total carbs it is.
FOCUS #3: BALANCED TRAINING
I think the thing that went against me the last 4-6 months in my training was the skewed training balance. I was trying to train for my 100 mile run, I was running way too much and had a half marathon (or two) every weekend.
I won’t lie — that put me out of whack in my training.
Granted I had weight training classes during the week and I was getting miles in. But, the balance was off and not completely in line with my goals. And, then considering my injury recovery that just further threw off my balance, because I couldn’t physically do what I need to do to properly prepare myself for my 100 mile run.
I really held onto the hope that somehow, one day, I’d miraculously wake up pain free and be able to do what I needed to do. Well, that day never came. And, reality finally sunk in — eight months after my injury.
While I’m glad that I never gave up to the hope things would get better, I also wish I came to the realization earlier. It would have probably sped up the recovery process quicker. Either way, we’re here now and there’s no changing that.
So the plan of attack is balancing my fitness — that means more strength training, less running and focusing on my flexibility while maintaining my needed physical therapy stretches for my ankle. I know that might sound a bit confusing, but the past couple of years running was the fat kid on the other end of the seesaw — I can’t have that any more.
I need balance.
Having ten more races until Race #180 is really a blessing in disguise, because that forces me to not be running a half marathon every weekend. I will have a couple back-to-back weekends with a half marathon, but that’s twice and very doable considering I am sweeping one of the two races.
Not only am I not running 13.1 miles every weekend, I am also not running every weekend. Each month I have one weekend that’s specifically for cross training — boot camp, swimming, long hike and what not … just no running.
I’m doing that so I won’t wear down throughout the year — and because I want/need that balance. I need to feel okay with not feeling the guilt of not doing a long run once a month. Plus, it allows me to explore other areas of fitness.
Just don’t ask me to get on a bike. But, that’s a post for another day.
Anyways, balance. Balance. Balance. Balance.
WORKOUT REGIME
I am a creature of habit. But, I also love varied — everyone once in a while. When I started out my weight-loss journey in 2009 I made it a point to switch up my diet and workout routine about every 4-8 weeks. I need to get back into that habit.
I found that the more I changed my approach and routine the easier it was for me to break through plateaus. I think that’s what really helped me lose over 100lbs. within a year.
I want to find a way to do that with my keto diet — which I’ll research in the next couple of weeks, but the focus right now is the workout regime. I’ll blog about this in more depth in the next couple of weeks, but I want to share with you my workout regime for the next eight weeks.
My focus is not only balance, but under my doctor’s direction — recovery for my ankle. This will lead me to the Riverton Half Marathon on March 24th. The running won’t prepare me for a fast race — but, that’s okay. I know I can grind out 13.1 miles — no matter now ugly it might look.
But, I really want to not only cut some more weight off the gut, but I really just want to give myself a good solid base to my fitness. A base that will help me moving forward with my health and weight — and keep my ankle happy and recovering.
My goal running wise isn’t necessarily to get fast this year — just faster. And, really that will come with the focus on training, diet and the way I balance that. But, in 2019 when I’ve solidified that base my focus will be on getting fast as I hopefully hone in on getting a sub-two half marathon time.
That’s a lot of info to process, so I might have to save all of that for a post for another time? Either way, I’m deliberately being strategic on my approach. I HAVE to be smart about it, especially in how I balance my goals with my reality.
And, I’m extremely excited about it all.

How to Keep Rats Away From Your Urban Chicken Coop
By Maureen Mackey, Oregon – Knowing how to keep rats away is a growing concern for some chicken owners. Keeping chickens provides so many benefits, it’s no wonder many city-dwellers have installed coops in their backyards. There is no need to live on a farm to enjoy the best chicken eggs, natural pest control, and the best soil quality.
But there’s a snake in this urban Garden of Eden, and in this case it’s a furry, four-legged rodent. Like uninvited houseguests that won’t leave, rats may help themselves to your poultry hospitality if you don’t take steps to stop them. And rats pose a definite threat to chickens and their owners.
Portland, Oregon, is just one of many cities across the country that has embraced the popular trend of backyard chicken coops. And Portland has a rat problem, which makes people wonder how to keep rats away and whether chicken coops are making the problem worse.
Ice Storms, Power Outages, Blizzards... Are you ready?
Let our experts help you prepare for the worst. Start your emergency preparation by downloading this FREE Guide. YES! I want this Free Report »
Christopher Roberts, Public Health Vector Specialist for Multnomah County Vector Control in Portland, has seen a rise in complaints on his job. His office gets about 1,000 rat-related complaints a year.
“The complaints we hear most often is that, ‘My neighbor has chickens and now we have rats.’”
Roberts is quick to point out that backyard chickens don’t create a rat problem; they just provide rats that are already in the area with another opportunity for food.
“Rats don’t appear out of nowhere. In any city, the older parts are more prone to rats. They can live in well-established vegetation or they can be in the sewer.”
Doug Bridge, owner of Portland Homestead Supply Company in Portland, Oregon, would agree. He keeps a flock of chickens both in his Southeast Portland home backyard and at his store.
Raising the coop will make it much more difficult for rodents to burrow in and make the coop their home.
“In any urban setting rats are a fact of life, so the question, ‘Do chickens attract rats?’ is somewhat misleading.” He believes, the construction work on the sewers in Portland is causing a bigger rat problem than chicken coops.
Roberts has also identified a culprit for Portland’s rat woes, and it’s not chickens.
“The number one source of any rat problem is hanging bird feeders.” The next major source, he added, is backyard compost. Along with those two sources, rats are attracted to pet food, including food left out for dogs and cats, and feed for chickens or goats.
“Any source of food runs the risk of attracting rats,” Roberts added. “They need a consistent food source to establish themselves.”
Another urban haven for backyard chicken enthusiasts is Berkeley, California. Derek DiMaggio, Berkeley vector control technician, agrees with Roberts that any food source will draw rats, including pet food and birdseed.
“Birds are messy eaters — they spill their seed on the ground, and this creates an accumulated buffet. If rats become used to this food source it can become an on-going problem.”
Feeding your flock inside the enclosed run, and not outside, can help prevent accidentally providing a food source for rodents, too. Photos courtesy of Multnomah County Vector Control, Portland, Oregon
DiMaggio says he’s seen rats that have easy access to a food source become acclimatized to their surroundings and as a result very relaxed — almost like domesticated pets. And chicken coops can provide a very convenient food source for rodents.
“A chicken coop can be a big problem depending on how it’s kept,” said DiMaggio. “If it’s not properly constructed and rodent-proof, it can actually cause rodent activity during the day.” Seeing rats during the day is unusual, he added, since these wary creatures are usually active only at night.
Typically, rodent invaders are either roof rats, or more commonly, their larger and more aggressive cousin the Norway rat. These rodents can enter a structure through a hole no bigger than a quarter. Norway rats, in particular, are likely to be present if there is a problem with the sewers, especially broken pipes, which is common in the sewer systems of older cities.
Evidence of a rat presence in your home includes scraping sounds in your walls, scratches and/or greasy rub marks (from a rat’s oily fur) on wood or painted surfaces, and burrows in the ground next to your coop or near a home’s foundation. Rats will often dig both an entry and exit hole and their holes are round and smooth. A burrow or hole adjacent to a sidewalk or in a front lawn or parking strip usually indicates a Norway rat that’s dug up to the surface from a cracked sewer line.
Chicken owners that don’t know how to keep rats away will know pretty quickly if they have a rodent problem if they observe rat droppings in their coops, particularly near the feeders. Worst-case scenario, they may see their birds attacked or eggs eaten.
While the idea of rats attacking chickens is upsetting, rodents aren’t the predators that city chicken owners like Bridge worry most about.
“Dogs have been our number one chicken predator by far, and we have lost chickens to hawks, raccoons, and opossums,” Bridge said. ”In our decade of having chickens at home and at our store, we’ve never had an issue with rats disturbing our chickens.”
Bridge’s chief method of dealing with any predator is a simple one. “We lock our chickens in every night. This is the most important predation control we do. We do let our chickens range in the yard and around our business during the daylight hours.”
But predation isn’t the only headache rats can create for urban chicken owners. Public health and safety are other concerns. Rats can cause expensive structural damage and contaminate food and areas where food is grown or prepared.
Rats who are filching food from your chickens could translate to rats seeking shelter in your home and that’s very bad news. Rodents have been known to cause house fires by gnawing on electrical wires and plugs, not to mention in-house flooding by biting through the flexible water pipes that connect to dishwashers and sinks.
Rats rarely go beyond 300 feet of their burrows or nests, making it convenient for them to take shelter in one place, such as a home’s basement or crawlspace, and get food somewhere else — like you or your neighbor’s adjacent chicken coop.
According to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management findings, Norway rats can cover a circular area of about 100 to 150 feet in diameter when they are on the prowl for food and water.
As Roberts put it, “Rats don’t care about property lines.”
Another reason to learn how to keep rats away is that they can carry serious diseases, including salmonella, leptospirosis and murine typhus. And then there’s that bane of the Middle Ages, the plague. Though the incidence is rare, humans can still contract this disease via the bite of a rat flea. The possibility of an outbreak exists if the rat population increases, warns Berkeley’s Environmental Health Division on its website.
The University of California’s research shows that just one well-fed female Norway rat can produce about four to six litters a year. Plus, she can wean 20 or more of those offspring every year, too. Multiply those numbers by the females in a large colony of rats and you can see the potential for explosive population growth.
So, what’s the best way to repel rats from your city chickens?
“In my experience, it all depends on your coop design,” said Bridge. A lot of chicken coop plans are made to keep chickens in, not rats and other predators out.
Roberts recommends enclosing your entire coop with ¼-inch steel hardware cloth, and sinking or burying that cloth into the ground one foot deep and another foot extending out from the structure. He cautioned against using traditional chicken wire because mice and small rats can fit through it and larger rats can dig under it.
Bridge learned how to keep rats away through hard experience.
“My first coop was on the ground, and I lined the bottom with chicken wire rather than hardware wire. Within a year, the rats had successfully tunneled through the flimsy chicken wire. I built my last coop two feet off the ground to make cleaning far easier via a drop floor, and have seen no evidence of rats in or around this coop.”
Another important step for how to keep rats away from your flock is cleaning up after feedings and controlling seed spillage. Putting birds on a feeding schedule helps, too.
Cities like Portland and Berkeley offer free rodent inspections and advice to coop owners. Part of DiMaggio’s job is to talk to backyard chicken owners about rodent harborage and the attendant health hazards, and to inform them about city statutes.
To avoid paying a fine or being required to relocate your coop or remove it altogether, it pays to research city code regulations and enforcement. For example, city laws may require a coop to be built anywhere from 15 to 40 feet or even farther from a neighboring structure. Codes also address the number and type of birds allowed.
Once you’re in compliance with your local municipal codes, here are a few additional tips to deal with a rat problem or prevent one from developing:
• Design a coop that rats can’t enter or tunnel under — or better yet, if possible, build one that’s free standing. • Store all food in gnaw-proof containers. • Discontinue open feeding and put your birds on a feeding schedule. And if you do notice evidence of rats, put chicken feeders away every night.
These steps should help keep your coop rat-free and make sure you and your birds stay healthy and happy.
Now that you have some ideas on how to keep rats away from your coop, what changes will you have to make, if any?

Lepitaur Lore and Information
(lepitaurs were created by Vickie but a lot of the information she wrote on her website didn’t feel realistic to me, so this is my version. credit for the basis of the idea goes to her.)
Lepitaurs are catlike creatures that have been domesticated for thousands of years. It is unknown what "wild" lepitaurs looked like at this point, prior to domestication. Much like how dogs have been selectively bred for different uses, Lepitaurs come in a variety of selectively bred appearances and temperaments. There are three size ranges lepitaurs generally are. There is crossover and variation depending on the breeding, but as a general rule all lepitaurs fall into these three groups. Small lepitaurs generally weigh between 10 pounds and 30 pounds, usually becoming no larger than a large housecat such as a maine coon. Medium lepitaurs generally weigh between 50 and 100 pounds, like the size of a Labrador. Large lepitaurs generally weigh more than 250 pounds. Some even are large and strong enough to be ridden. Lepitaurs of all sizes are often kept as companions, but many people use them for their livelihood. For ranchers, small and medium sized lepitaurs make wonderful replacements for herding dogs and medium and large lepitaurs can be the ideal animal to guard livestock. For hunting, each size can hunt and take down prey of different types. Small lepitaurs are good for hunting rabbits and anything on the small side. Medium lepitaurs can take down deer. Large lepitaurs can hunt moose or even bears. Social needs Lepitaurs are highly intelligent and most people find them easier to work with than dogs, which is one of the reasons many people opt for a lepitaur over a dog for their work. That said, lepitaurs can be harder to care for than a dog. Because of their intelligence, they can bore easily and become destructive. It is usually recommended that you have more than one lepitaur, so they can entertain each other, unless you plan to spend a lot of time with your lepitaur. While lepitaurs do enjoy the company of non-lepitaur animals, they seem to bore of them if that is all the interaction they get in the average day. Diet Also, lepitaurs are omnivores. If not properly socialized from a young age, lepitaurs may decide to make a meal of the livestock you wanted them to protect. They are very smart, but you have to teach them friend from food. Also, providing a varied prepared diet will keep a curious lepitaur from tasting things they shouldn't. Food, veggies, and meat should make up their main diet, but seeds and nuts are good treats. Be careful about the fatty foods, unless you live in a very cold climate or your lepitaur is especially active. Housing Lepitaurs need plenty of room to run and explore. Because of their intelligence, they usually know not to wander from home so often fences are not needed. In fact, fences can rarely hold a determined lepitaur. Again, keeping them entertained will help prevent them from exploring outside your property. If you do need to contain a lepitaur, you need to remember they are good jumpers, climbers, and can dig if needed. Make sure their contained area is plenty stimulating and take them out for walks and playtime often. A bored lepitaur is more likely to attempt escape. Grooming Lepitaurs will generally keep their claws filed as long as you provide them with things to scratch, as you would a cat. Short furred lepitaurs usually don't need any help staying clean, but longer fur sometimes needs brushing and washing. When raising lepitaurs from young, it is always suggested that you preform regular grooming on them so they will be more cooperative as adults. Health and Hygiene Lepitaurs are very hardy, which is one of the reasons they are so commonly kept instead of other animals. However, regular vet checks will help make sure your lepitaur is happy and healthy. Spaying and neutering is actually an uncommon practice. Lepitaur keepers usually just keep a close eye on the female lepitaurs and when they are in heat, they separate them from males. This is when containment of a lepitaur may be required. Usually only lepitaurs kept purely as companions are spayed and neutered, to make care easier for the keeper. Breeding As most domesticated animals do, lepitaurs can breed all year round. How often the females come into heat usually (not always) depends on the size and "breed" of the lepitaur. Small lepitaurs could be as often as three times a year while large ones may be once a year or less. Gestation is usually around 60 days, but this also can vary based on the size of the lepitaur. Litter size ranges from 1 to 4. Lepitaurs are wonderful parents and usually don't need any help with birthing or raising the babies. Both the mother and father can take part in raising the litter and if they live with other lepitaurs, generally every lepitaur in a group will help with the babies. Just keep an eye out for any aggression towards the babies. As fully formed adults, lepitaurs can exhibit a large number of traits, such as manes, fangs, horns, and leg feathering, but most of those features do not develop until the lepitaur is six months old to two years. Even the size is unknown until they are nearly full grown. While a lepitaur can breed as young as 6 months, it is recommended that you wait until a year to two years so every trait has fully come in. Different sizes can be mixed, though this is usually discouraged. When mixed, a litter could have any range of sizes. Lepitaurs exhibit a feature unheard of in other species. They can interbreed with other species. The reason is unknown and unstudied. Mainly we have seen crosses between lepitaurs and felines such as domestic cats as well and big cats like cheetahs and leopards. They produce viable offspring, though the appearance of these offspring range widely and are not always considered desirable. Sadly, there are people who breed these mixes purely in the hope to create "fancy lepitaurs" that will sell better, with little regard for the well-being of the species and usually abandoning the less aesthetically pleasing of the offspring. This is why we always suggest caution when buying mixed lepitaurs. Buying Speaking of buying lepitaurs, here is a small guide to how to do it. Firstly, you need to decide whether you want a working lepitaur or a companion. While most lepitaurs can be trained to do just about anything, if you have a specific need, you may need specific traits. If you are searching for a companion, a good place to start is searching for rejected working lepitaurs. Some breeders will have lepitaurs that do not fit their needs or simply is unsuitable for work and may make a wonderful companion. These will likely not be babies, but that means what you see is what you get and there will be less surprises as the lepitaur grows. In addition, a breeder breeding for working lepitaurs will usually have a good idea of the temperament of their lepitaurs and will be able to match you up with a good fit. Another option is searching for a breeder that focuses on companion lepitaurs. As mentioned before, be wary of those breeding "fancy lepitaurs" who only care about aesthetics, mixed or not. These often ignore health and temperament when breeding. However, reputable companion breeders will know their lepitaurs inside and out and should be able to match you with a young one that will be a good fit. They should be able to tell you what physical traits the lepitaur will develop and the temperament the lepitaur should have. One more word of warning on mixes, though, even reputable breeders of mixes likely will not know what the mix will be full grown, unless it is from a carefully bred line of mixes and not a first generation mix. Always ask about lineage and even ask to meet the parents, and older siblings if possible, to get an idea of the possibilities. One more potential option is a rescue. There are homeless lepitaurs that need adopting. They can be any age, young, adult, and even senior. A rescue is usually a bit of a gamble as you don't know any of the history or lineage, but sometimes you can find one you just click with. I always recommend fostering first, especially if it is a young one, so you can spend some time and make sure it is the lepitaur you want before committing. There is an especially big risk in adopting young lepitaurs as you likely will have no idea what traits they could develop or how large they will get. If you have size requirements, I advise against adopting young lepitaurs.

Shared Playgrounds Week4
This week:
We entered the Xchallenge.
Contacted schools about getting some drawings from children for ptototyping.
Individually selected our best research points from each topic.
5 main research points from each person, and my thoughts on the information selected/found.
Kylie’s: top 5 facts for Prisoner Integration and Rehab:
1 | 'Out of Gate', is an external program offered to offenders serving sentences of two years or less, or who have been on remand for more than 60 days. From this program, 67% of prisoners who complete this program, remain out of prison for six months and 53% for 12 months, which is a small-scale reduction against a sample of comparable offenders who did not engage in the service.
2 | The period of transition from custody to community can be very stressful. The period of incarceration may itself have had several “collateral effects”. They may have lost their livelihood, personal belongings, ability to maintain housing for themselves and family, and lost important relationships and social networks. This can result to homelessness/lack of motivation to change.
3 | Since 1990, an average of 590,400 inmates have been released annually from state and federal prisons. The Department of Justice’s (DOJ’s) Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) has estimated that nearly three quarters of all released prisoners will be rearrested within five years of their release and about 6 in 10 will be re-convicted.
4 | There are three types of prison integration programs:Institutional programs - designed to prepare offenders to reenter society can include education, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, job training, counselling, and mentoring. Surveillance-based programs - centered on supervision of offenders in the community following release from confinement. On their own, with advice. (Parole) Assistance based programs - Offenders afflicted by mental illness encounter particular problems upon release into the community.
5 | The conventional wisdom is that post-release employment is one of the most important elements for an ex-offender to successfully transition back into the community. Released prisoners frequently identify employment as one of the most important factors in their efforts to stay crimefree after incarceration. Five studies examined the effects of programs that provided job training and/or post-release employment services for prisoners. Of these five studies, only two found that the program helped reduce recidivism, though neither program had a significant effect on post-release employment.
Katriel’s: Top 5 Facts for Sustainability & Materials:
1. Using a special machine called a Protocycler, recyclable plastics (such as plastic bottles) can be ground up and extruded into spools of filament to be used in 3D printing machines. 3D print offcuts and unwanted 3D prints can also be used, creating a "closed loop" system of production.
2. Tyres are a major problem in New Zealand currently because there is no solid recycling scheme in place to deal with them. Mountains of them are collecting in landfills and hidden areas of the countryside, posing a fire hazard and leaching harmful chemicals into the soil. Meanwhile, overseas, tyres are actually being recycled to make rubber mats.
3. Recycling 1kg of cotton saves 20,000 litres of water - as cotton is a very water-intensive crop. It also accounts for about a quarter of the pesticides used in the US, which directly impacts bee populations - so recycling cotton is particularly helpful in reducing environmental impacts.
4. The creation of synthetic fibres - such as polyester - produce harmful emissions including volatile organic compounds, particulate matter, and acid gases such as hydrogen chloride, all of which can cause or aggravate respiratory disease, which serves as another reason we should be recycling synthetic fibres.
5. Ministry for the Environment figures show 100 million kilos of textile waste is thrown into the country’s (New Zealand's) rubbish dumps yearly. That’s the equivalent of every person in New Zealand chucking about 145 medium-sized men’s T-shirts a year.
Amanda’s: Top 7 points on poverty:
1. Child poverty “can lead to serious and prolonged mental illness in children” (Feek, 2017), that can eventuate into a problematic adulthood that has a negative effect on both the individual and society as a whole (Peters & Besley, 2014). 2. Poverty rates are consistently higher for those aged 0-11 years old, compared to children 12-17 (Feek, 2017). This is Doodle Dolls target market.
3. Child poverty rates are increasing at a rapid rate. As Roy (2016) states, “one-third of the country’s children, or 300,000, now live below the poverty line – 45,000 more than a year ago”
4. Stuff (2016) estimates that “…90,000 kids are living in severe poverty” and that “New Zealand has a goal to halve poverty by 2030"
5. Peters & Besley (2014) state that “New Zealand has substantial rates of child poverty and material deprivation. These rates significantly exceed those of many other developed countries and, at least on some measures, are much worse than three decades ago. The evidence suggests that child poverty, especially when experienced in early childhood and/or when persistent and severe, can be very damaging —both to the children directly affected and society as a whole. Amongst other things, child poverty contributes to the large educational achievement gaps between children from lower and higher SES backgrounds. For such reasons, there is a powerful case for reducing child poverty. I have argued that decision-makers have the available policy tools to alleviate child poverty and mitigate its effects–at least to some extent. The issue, in other words, is not the means, but the political will.”
6. Sadly, “NZ has the worst teen suicide rate of the developed world, with 16 suicides per 100,000 in 2016" (Fyres, 2017)
7. Feek (2017) suggests that “Prevention is the key; which can be aided by policies that support better incomes…“. Hopefully Doodle Dolls will be the beginning of a solution to end New Zealand’s dismal child poverty rates.
Sophie’s: Top facts/info for child Psychology and Toys.
1. Children’s Drawing development at each age (finding the perfect age group) 18m to 3 years = scribbles 2 to 4 years = more complex, still unrealistic (colors don’t match objects eg. Grass drawn in purple) 5 to 8 years = Colors match and everything is generally more realistic and proportional. At this age children often draw things the same each time e.g. a house. 9 to 11 years = they become easily frustrated when cant draw things realistically and will likely state “I cant draw.” (4 to 8 years is a likely sweet spot for getting the most creative drawing for doll designs) Child Milestones: 1st - Motor development 2nd – language development 3rd – socio-emotional development
2. Children with access to a variety of toys were found to reach higher levels of intellectual achievement, regardless of the children’s sex, race, or social class (Bradley 1985, Elardo 1975).
3. The availability of toys intended for social play increased social interaction by disabled children in an inclusive preschool (Driscoll 2009).
4. Variety is the key. Children play longer when a variety of toys is available. The careful selection of toys can lead children to play with others, to cooperate, or to develop particular skills.
5. Play has been defined as any activity freely chosen, intrinsically motivated, and personally directed. Play is the lens through which children experience their world, and the world of others. If deprived of play, children will suffer both in the present and in the long term. Play increases brain development and growth, establishes new neural connections, and in a sense makes the player more intelligent. It improves the ability to perceive others’ emotional state and to adapt to ever-changing circumstances. Play is more frequent during the periods of most rapid brain growth.
6. What is acquired through play is not specific information but a general mind set towards solving problems that includes both abstraction and combinatorial flexibility where children string bits of behaviour together to form novel solutions to problems requiring the restructuring of thought or action… A child who is not being stimulated, by being ... played with, and who has few opportunities to explore his or her surroundings, may fail to link up fully those neural connections and pathways which will be needed for later learning.’ (Sutton-Smith 1997).
7. Neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp found that play stimulates production of a protein, ‘brain-derived neurotrophic factor’, in the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex, which are responsible for organising, monitoring, and planning for the future. In one study, two hours a day of play with objects produced changes in the brain weight and efficiency of experimental animals (Panksepp 2003, Rosenzweig 1976).
8. “Between the ages of around one and twelve, many children manifest a deep attachment to a stuffed soft object, normally shaped into a bear, a rabbit or – less often – a penguin.” “Children invent identities for their soft toys giving them voices and ways of addressing them. They often have conversations with their toys in a tone that they subconsciously crave to hear (compassion). Mental wellbeing depends on your inner voice so if you speak to yourself with love then you will feel loved.” ‘No one else can understand me like bunny can. We should honour stuffed animals for what they really are: tools to help us on our first steps in the vital business of knowing how to look after ourselves.
9. color affects us in many areas of life, including our health, our sense of well being, and our feelings.
...............................................................................................................
Below is the email I sent to the head of Michael Park Primary School asking to meet with some student and get them to draw a creature/character for us to get a better understanding of what children can produce and at what age. As well it gives us some designs to do our prototyping with. I made it very clear that we would not be taking their designs and making them into dolls for free, only for prototyping.
Hi there Donna Bainbridge,
My name is Sophie McIntyre, I am a 3rd year student at AUT studying a Bachelor of Creative Technologies. I also went to Steiner kindergarten and primary school, then Waiheke High for Secondary education.
I am collaborating with 3 other students on a project called "Doodle Dolls". Doodle Dolls is a socially and environmentally sustainable business that makes soft toys, created to look exactly like characters young children creatively imagine and draw for us.
Our aim is to select New Zealand children with financial hardship to design these toys. A percentage of the revenue made from selling these toys will go towards a future fund for these children to help support them with fundamental needs such as food and education. The second main element of this business idea, is that we intend to make these toys out of recycled and sustainable materials.
"We want this business to give as much as possible and take as little as possible".
We are currently in the research and development stage of the business and are looking for young (under 10 year) children to participate in drawing characters for us, so as to gage an idea of what we may receive in the future. Meaning if students at Michael Park participate their drawings will be used for prototyping and will not be used to create dolls to sell.
It would be greatly appreciated if students in class 4 or below (preferably a mix of 4-8yrs) could take a short amount of time this week to participate in drawing a wonderful, colourful imagined character/creature/animal.
The reason why I would love to get MPS students designs (for the prototyping stage) is because steiner's philosophy and curriculum has a really big focus on imagination and creativity. To add to this we are aiming to have the designs lovely and colourful (no black), as colour stimulates creativity and influences emotions. So the fact that Steiner Students only use vibrant colour crayons and pencils is perfect.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,

Keep Rats Out of Your Urban Chicken Coop
By Maureen Mackey, Oregon
Keeping chickens provides so many benefits, it’s no wonder many city-dwellers have in-stalled coops in their backyards. There is no need to live on a farm to enjoy having fresh, wholesome eggs to eat, improved soil quality and natural pest control.
And Portland has a rat problem, which makes people wonder whether chicken coops are making the problem worse.
What do I need in my Chicken Coop?
Download this FREE Guide from our chicken housing experts — chicken coop plans to ideas for nesting boxes.
In any city the older parts are more prone to rats.
And chicken coops can pro-vide a very convenient food source for rodents.
Chicken owners will know pretty quickly if they have a rodent problem if they observe rat droppings in their coops, particularly near the feeders. Worst-case scenario, they may see their birds attacked or eggs eaten.
While the idea of rats attacking chickens is upsetting, rodents aren’t the predators that city chicken owners like Bridge worry most about.
“Dogs have been our number one predator by far, and we have lost chickens to hawks, raccoons, and a possum,” Bridge said.
Rats can also carry serious diseases, including salmonella, leptospirosis and murine typhus.
So, what’s the best way to keep big city rats away from your city chickens?
“In my experience, it all depends on your coop design,” said Bridge. A lot of chicken coops are made to keep chickens in, not rats and other predators out.
Roberts recommends enclosing your entire coop with ¼-inch steel hardware cloth, and sinking or burying that cloth into the ground one foot deep and another foot extending out from the structure. He cautioned against using traditional chicken wire, because mice and small rats can fit through it and larger rats can dig under it.
Bridge learned this lesson through hard experience.
Another important step in keeping rats away from your flock is cleaning up after feedings and controlling seed spill-age.
