“Are you still coming over after practice?” Jackie asked, grabbing her water bottle off the bench.
Nat nodded, “I… yeah, if you still want me to?”
Jackie gave the blonde a soft smile, noticing her face getting red. Jackie thought it was the cutest thing. She was unsure how the night was going to go, but she needed to make sure that Nat felt the same way she did.
“I still want you to,” Jackie confirmed, watching as Nat bit her bottom lip.
“Then I’ll see you at seven,” Nat smiled, turning to walk in the direction of her car.
“It’s a date!” Jackie called out, blushing at what she had just said.
Jackie looked around, watching as other people passed by. She had no reason to be embarrassed - Shauna would say that all the time to her when they were planning on hanging out. But Jackie had wanted Nat ever since freshman year in high school and now that it was their freshman year in college, she was finally going to make her move.
Well, Shauna would kill her if she didn’t at least try.
Jackie didn’t have any more classes for the day and texted Shauna to meet up at the closest fast food restaurant that was close to campus. Normally, Jackie would get something healthier to eat, but she wanted comfort food.
Ordering her food and finding the nearest table in the back, Jackie thankfully only had to wait a good ten minutes before Shauna showed up. Greeting her with a smile as she sat down, Jackie took a bite of her food while she avoided Shauna’s knowing look.
“You’re not getting out of this, Jax,” Shauna said.
Jackie coughed, almost choking on her food. She took a sip of her drink before rolling her eyes. “I’m not getting out of anything,” she said, trying to defend herself. Although, to Shauna’s credit, she was thinking about it.
Jackie didn’t want to go through the heartbreak of not being loved back by the person she had been in love with since high school. Sure, Jackie had only been with a few people, but they were never what she truly needed.
“The worst she could say is no,” Shauna said, snapping her out of her thoughts. “You’ve been crushing on her since freshman year in high school. This is getting pathetic.”
Jackie rolled her eyes, watching as Shauna’s smile grew wider. She knew her best friend was right, but she would never admit it.
“Now go order your food, I feel awkward eating in front of you and my food is getting cold,” Jackie said, thankful that Shauna listened to her.
Practice went by way too fast for Jackie’s liking, even though she would normally be excited for it. It was Friday and she didn’t have any classes until Tuesday besides practice. Making her way to the locker room, Shauna passed her up with a warning look that was mixed with seriousness and playfulness.
Jackie took a shower last, thinking long and hard about Nat. Once she was done, she dried herself off and got dressed before rushing to her car. Taking a deep breath, she sent Nat her address, telling her that she was just leaving the school now.
When she got in her car, she jumped when Nat had already texted her back. She looked down, reading:
Nat: hey babe, will be there in twenty-five? maybe thirty? depends on the traffic :)
Jackie’s breath hitched, blushing a bit at the pet name. Out of all the years she had known Nat, she had never called Jackie “babe”.
Once she pulled into her driveway, Nat pulled in right after her. She looked at the time and was a bit surprised when she realized it was six-fifty. Jackie grabbed her bags and got out of her car, while Nat followed suit.
“Hey,” Nat smiled.
“Hey.” Jackie smiled back.
To say she was nervous was an understatement, but Shauna’s voice was in her head telling her to not let this opportunity go.
“So, Halloween is in two weeks, but I thought it would be fun for us to carve pumpkins?” Jackie asked. When Nat stayed quiet as they walked up her driveway, Jackie began to panic. “I’m sorry if that’s a dumb idea.”
Nat stopped her, “Jackie… it’s not stupid; I love doing shit like that. It’s not stupid at all.”
Jackie smiled, her face heating up as they kept eye contact. Nat ran her tongue over her bottom lip, staying in place.
“You have really pretty eyes, Jackie,” Nat said, stepping closer to her.
“S- So do you?” Jackie said.
Nat smirked, “Is that a question or?”
“S- Sorry,” Jackie stuttered. “Not a question. You have really pretty eyes.”
Nat smiled, not saying anything in return as they made their way into Jackie’s house. Jackie set her stuff near the door, taking her shoes off, and Nat followed suit.
“My parents are gone for the weekend, so you can stay as long as you want,” Jackie smiled. “I mean, even if they were to come back. Since I started college, they haven’t really been caring about stuff.”
“Okay, cool,” Nat nodded. “Are we doing it in your house or outside?”
“In here is fine, let me go get some supplies,” Jackie said, going to the stairs. “You’re welcome to make yourself at home, I’ll be back down in two, maybe three minutes, tops.”
Jackie ran upstairs as soon as Nat nodded. After a minute, she rushed back downstairs with newspapers and pumpkin carving tools. “If you want, you can put on music?” Jackie said, watching as Nat pulled her phone.
Jackie laid out the newspaper on the kitchen island, getting everything ready before bringing the pumpkins in.
“Thank you for hanging out. I mean, I know you and Lottie usually do… I just don't want to intrude on your guys’…” Jackie trailed off, opening the door that was connected to the garage.
Nat rushed over, helping her bring in the first pumpkin. Jackie was surprised when Nat began to laugh.
“Our what, Jax?” Nat shook her head. “Those rumors aren’t true. Yeah, Lottie likes girls and so do I, but we’ve never… no.”
Jackie bit her lip, rushing to grab the other pumpkin in the garage to avoid Nat seeing her face all red. Nat followed her once more, and when Jackie turned around with the other pumpkin, Nat gave her a knowing look.
“Want to tell me why you were so worried?” Nat questioned, taking the pumpkin from Jackie’s arms.
“Oh… not really… a reason, I just thought-“ Jackie began, but Nat cut her off.
“Jackie,” Nat started. “Do you think I haven’t noticed the way you’ve been looking at me since freshman year?”
Jackie’s eyes widened, “Wait… what?”
“Plus, last summer before college classes started, I overheard you talking to Shauna about being in love with me,” Nat admitted.
Jackie walked back towards the kitchen island, grabbing a trash bag to put the guts in. Nat joined next to her, grabbing one of the pumpkins and putting it in front of her.
“So I waited and waited… and waited some more,” Nat continued. “For you to bring it up to me but you didn’t.”
“I-“ Jackie stopped talking, watching as Nat picked up a sharpie. She sat there, unable to take her eyes off Nat’s hands as she drew an outline of a face on her pumpkin.
When she finished, she noticed that Jackie was standing there. “Want me to help you draw a face?”
Jackie nodded, “Yes, please.”
Jackie moved out of Nat’s way as she stood in front of her pumpkin.
“Do you want a spooky face or a silly face?” Nat asked, looking over her shoulder.
“Silly,” she smiled.
Nat rolled her eyes playfully, turning her head back to the pumpkin. Jackie watched over her shoulder as she drew the face for her. When she was finished, she stepped back over to her own.
“I hope you like it, Jackie,” Nat said.
For the first time, Jackie realized that Nat was blushing.
“I love it, thank you so much,” Jackie nodded, picking up one of the knives.
Nat began to cut hers at the top and Jackie followed suit. Both of them sat in silence as they listened to music. Throwing the guts out into the trash, Jackie picked a handful up and threw it at Nat.
“Hey now!” Nat shouted, grabbing a handful and throwing it at Jackie.
When Jackie ducked, they both turned to look at the pumpkin on the wall. Nat’s eyes widened, “I’m so sorry.”
Jackie smiled softly, pulling Nat closer to her. “You don’t have to apologize,” she hummed, looking into Nat’s eyes before leaning down and kissing her softly. “Was… was that okay?”
“More than okay,” Nat nodded, taking a deep breath. “I’ve been waiting for that for so long.”
Jackie smiled. “Let’s finish these pumpkins and I’ll order us some food, yeah?”
Nat licked her lips, “Yeah.”
“Would you maybe want to stay the weekend?” Jackie asked, silently hoping Nat would say yes.
“I would have to go get some clothes but-“ Nat began, but Jackie cut her off.
“I can always drive you to your dorm to get clothes and what you need for the weekend?” Jackie suggested, quickly calming herself down. “If you want to that is.”
“I want to on one condition.”
Jackie raised an eyebrow, “What’s the condition?”
Nat smirked, “We have a horror movie marathon.”
Jackie was sold.
