Been awhile since I've had one of these posts but I figure with all that's going on in the world it's time to make another one of these posts and get some stuff out there for people. A lot of the information I'm going to go over you can find here:

Browsers:

There's a number to go with but for this post going forward I'm going to recommend Firefox. I know that the Privacy Guides lists Brave and Safari as possible options but Brave is Chrome based now and Safari has ties to Apple. Mullvad is also an option but that's for your more experienced users so I'll leave that up to them to work out.

Browser Extensions:

uBlock Origin: content blocker that blocks ads, trackers, and fingerprinting scripts. Notable for being the only ad blocker that still works on Youtube.

Privacy Badger: Content blocker that specifically blocks trackers and fingerprinting scripts. This one will catch things that uBlock doesn't catch but does not work for ads.

Facebook Container: "but I don't have facebook" you might say. Doesn't matter, Meta/Facebook still has trackers out there in EVERYTHING and this containerizes them off away from everything else.

Bitwarden: Password vaulting software, don't trust the password saving features of your browsers, this has multiple layers of security to prevent your passwords from being stolen.

ClearURLs: Allows you to copy and paste URL's without any trackers attached to them.

VPN:

Note: VPN software doesn't make you anonymous, no matter what your favorite youtuber tells you, but it does make it harder for your data to be tracked and it makes it less open for whatever network you're presently connected to.

Mozilla VPN: If you get the annual subscription it's ~$60/year and it comes with an extension that you can install into Firefox.

Proton VPN: Has easily the most amount of countries serviced, can take cash payments, and does offer port forwarding.

Email Provider:

Note: By now you've probably realized that Gmail, Outlook, and basically all of the major "free" e-mail service providers are scraping your e-mail data to use for ad data. There are more secure services that can get you away from that but if you'd like the same storage levels you have on Gmail/Outlook.com you'll need to pay.

Proton Mail: Secure, end-to-end encrypted, and fairly easy to setup and use. Offers a free option up to 1gb

Tuta: Secure, end-to-end encrypted, been around a very long time, and offers a free option up to 1gb.

Email Client:

Thunderbird if you're on Windows or Linux

Apple Mail if you're on macOS

Cloud Storage:

Proton Drive: Encrypted cloud storage from the same people as Proton Mail.

Tresorit: Encrypted cloud storage owned by the national postal service of Switzerland. Received MULTIPLE awards for their security stats.

Peergos: decentralized and open-source, allows for you to set up your own cloud storage, but will require a certain level of expertise.

Microsoft Office Replacements:

LibreOffice: free and open-source, updates regularly, and has the majority of the same functions as base level Microsoft Office.

OnlyOffice: cloud-based, free, and open source.

Chat Clients:

Note: As you've heard SMS and even WhatsApp and some other popular chat clients are basically open season right now. These are a couple of options to replace those.

Signal: Provides IM and calling securely and encrypted, has multiple layers of data hardening to prevent intrusion and exfil of data.

Molly (Android OS only): Alternative client to Signal. Routes communications through the TOR Network.

Briar: Encrypted IM client that connects to other clients through the TOR Network, can also chat via wifi or bluetooth.

Now for the last bit, I know that the majority of people are on Windows or macOS, but if you can get on Linux I would strongly recommend it. pop_OS, Ubuntu, and Mint are super easy distros to use and install. They all have very easy to follow instructions on how to install them on your PC and if you'd like to just test them out all you need is a thumb drive to boot off of to run in demo mode.

If you game through Steam their Proton emulator in compatibility mode works wonders, I'm presently playing a major studio game that released in 2024 with no Linux support on it and once I got my drivers installed it's looked great. There are some learning curves to get around, but the benefit of the Linux community is that there's always people out there willing to help.

I hope some of this information helps you and look out for yourself, it's starting to look scarier than normal out there.

How to Find Someone on WhatsApp

You can find someone on WhatsApp via your iPhone, Android, or PC. Here we’ll talk about the different ways to search for someone on WhatsApp, add a new contact, and use the WhatsApp location tracker. Facebook profile

Some people display their phone numbers (or business contacts) on their Facebook profile. So you can find their profile to see if their number is there. Of course, you can always start chatting with them on Facebook and ask for their contact directly. These are the steps to get started:

Launch Facebook on your PC and search for the person using their name or username.

WhatsApp Working on In-App Dialer Feature: Report

WhatsApp is apparently working on a new feature that will allow users to make voice calls using an in-app dialer. The feature is still in development, and the instant messaging network has not made it available to Google Play beta testers. While the dialler's functionality is uncertain, it is thought that it may allow users to call numbers that are not saved in their contact list. According to recent reports, the company is also developing a nearby file-sharing capability. The functionality, discovered by feature tracker WABetaInfo on WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.9.28, is presently unavailable to beta users, although the tracker believes that it may emerge in one of the next updates. The in-app dialler has the potential to increase the app's capabilities from a conventional voice and video calling platform to one that permits calling contacts who have not been saved and can resemble a real calling service. Interest rate rise: Bank of England more hopeful on UK economy

The head of the Bank of England has said he is “much more hopeful” for the UK economy, as interest rates were raised to their highest for 14 years.

The decision to lift rates to 4.25% from 4% came after the inflation rate rose unexpectedly last month.

It also follows the collapse of two US banks and the rescue of Swiss lender Credit Suisse, but the Bank said the UK financial system was “resilient”.

The Bank also said the UK was no longer heading into an immediate recession.

“We were really a bit on a knife edge as to whether there would be a recession… but I’m a bit more optimistic now,” said Bank governor Andrew Bailey.

However, Mr Bailey warned the UK was “not off to the races”, with the economy expected to grow only slightly in the coming months.

Interest rates have been rising steadily in an attempt to tackle rising prices.

Inflation, which is the pace at which prices rise, remains close to its highest level for 40 years at 10.4% in the year to February – more than five times the Bank’s target.

The jump in rates means that mortgage costs for some homeowners will rise and some savers could get better returns.

People on typical tracker mortgage deals will pay about £24 more a month following the latest increase and those on standard variable rate mortgages face a £15 jump.

The Bank voted to raise rates after the unexpected rise in inflation last month, but said it still expected the cost of living “to fall sharply over the rest of the year”.

It said this was largely due to the government extending energy bill help in the Budget to maintain typical household bills at £2,500 a year, as well as falls to wholesale gas prices.

However, Mr Bailey refused to say whether he thought UK interest rates had reached a peak.

Today’s interest rate rise could be the last. The pace of rises is slowing and inflation is now predicted to fall faster than expected, in part as a result of the government’s help for energy bills.

The Bank repeated language that further rises would be required “if there were evidence” of more inflationary pressures. The Bank’s discussions suggested that some of that pressure, for example from wage growth, was declining even after Wednesday’s shock inflation number. The next meeting in May is now a key point, where new quarterly forecasts for the economy and inflation could underpin a pause in rate rises.

While the British economy is better than feared, with no immediate recession expected, there are concerns about the impact of global financial fragility. The UK remains resilient. But that is another cloud weighing over the Bank’s decisions, with some memories of the quickly-reversed rises made by the Bank even after the credit crunch started in 2007.

However, absent that new cloud there is some good news about the UK economy here. The consumer seems to be more resilient to what was an extraordinary energy shock. Unemployment is not now expected to rise. The economy may still be flat, but given the size of the energy shock, it could have been much worse.

The high price of energy has been the main driver behind the rise in the cost of living over the past year, with gas and oil prices surging in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Other factors such as worker shortages and food costs have also fuelled price rises.

The nine members of the Monetary Policy Committee agreed on a to raise rates by a majority of seven to two, with the Bank saying “cost and price pressures have remained elevated”.

The Bank noted in its report that there had been “large and volatile moves in global financial markets” since the failure of Silicon Valley Bank in the US and the rescue deal for Credit Suisse, but Mr Bailey said he did not think the turmoil was likely to result in a re-run of the 2008 financial crisis.

In response to the rise in rates, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said the government supported the decision.

“With rising prices strangling growth and eroding family budgets, the sooner we grip inflation the better for everyone,” he said.

But shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said higher interest rates would cause concern for families.

“The government thinks the cost of living crisis is over, but the reality is that too many families are dealing with a Tory mortgage penalty and battling with soaring food prices,” she said.

Neil Sutton’s monthly mortgage payments were £255 before they started going up in January 2022, but they will rise to £465 from next month.

“There’s not a lot that you can do other than to try and work that much harder to find the extra £150 odd a month. I don’t really have an awful lot of choice,” he said.

“You know, you just despair, quietly, inwardly, but you know, I can’t let that show.”

Mr Sutton’s 20-year mortgage comes to an end next March and he does not think he will be able to afford to remortgage.

“I guess the bottom line is that we’re going to have to move,” he added.
