Arthritis: A common term describing inflammation of a joint, there are believed to be over 120 various forms of arthritis, with the most common being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid. In the Uk, around half a million people are believed to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and over a million people are said to suffer from osteoarthritis. Some forms of arthritis might be hereditary, however, it is not totally understood what causes arthritis. Many factors, such as environment, allergies, diet, and infections may stimulate arthritis. Arthritis is usually caused by a previous injury or by wear and tear. The cartilage might become thinner and less able to protect the bone, so this may end in the formation of bone at the edges of joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is seen as an aggressive inflammatory condition. The body's defense system turns on itself by fighting the cartilage in the joints, which in turn may result in inflammation and pain. Approximately 75% of sufferers are believed to be women; it tends to begin in the hands or feet before transferring to other joints. Nutrition said to help combat arthritis - A balanced healthy diet, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, and oily fish has been recommended. - It has been reported that saturated fats should be avoided as well as animal fats and processed foods. - A variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables, for example, spinach, tomatoes, pumpkin, and oranges, have been suggested to be included in a daily diet. Supplement said to be useful in combating arthritis Antioxidant vitamin and mineral complexes or a botanical antioxidant such as pycnogenol may be beneficial to take. Other supplements that are believed to help combat arthritis are; - Devils Claw - According to research, this plant has strong anti-inflammatory properties. It may decrease joint swelling and reported to have similar effects as the anti-arthritic drug, phenylbutazone. It has not been advised for people with gallstones or anyone that is consuming anticoagulants. - Cats Claw – It is believed that this herb features powerful anti-inflammatory properties and strengthens the immune system. It’s seen as a strong antioxidant, said to be effective for rheumatoid arthritis; it has been said to be avoided while undergoing surgery. - Glucosamine Sulphate - Frequent use of this supplement has been reported to slow the progression of osteoarthritis by forming healthy joint cartilage. It usually begins to work after two months of consuming it. Diabetics have been recommended to speak to a doctor prior to taking it. - Calcium - This is important for promoting healthy bones. It is discovered in milk, dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach. Calcium is seen as essential for females approaching menopause as they are at an increased risk of osteoporosis. - Bromelain - This enzyme is said to feature strong anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in treating physical injuries as it stops the production of compounds that cause swelling and pain. Those on anticoagulant medication have been recommended to check with their GP before taking Bromelain. - Cod Halibut liver oil - This features Essential fatty acids and high amounts of Vitamin D, which stimulates calcium absorption. Severe arthritis can result in the chronic pain, inability to do daily activities and make it difficult to walk or climb the stairs.
This decease can cause permanent joint changes. These changes may be visible, such as knobby finger joints, but often damage can only be seen on X-ray.
Some types of arthritis also affect the lungs, kidneys, heart, eyes and skin as well as the joints.
