I’m sorry. I’ve tried, but I can’t help it. I have a bad feeling about the upcoming election. A very bad feeling. I’ve tried to stifle it. Tried and tried. But it’s rising, like a failed harvest, by the day. Do you have that kind of feeling too? Or maybe you don’t at all. I can’t say.
Let me distill what this strange and terrible feeling — it feels like watching a sky turn black, or a horizon grow red — keeps whispering to me.
(I’m going to put the first two reasons in parentheses because you should skip them. They’re boring and we all know them. The first one is the most obvious: Trump’s trying to steal the election. And so far, he’s doing a pretty good job. The Postal Service has been captured, voting machines mysteriously, quietly shut down, and meanwhile, the Democrats have threatened to…hold hearings. He’s threatened to send armed troops into the streets on Election Day. Then there’s the fact that his side has an array of legal challenges lined up, which will cast doubt on whatever the results are, throwing politics into chaos. And the fact that he doesn’t plan to leave office peacefully at all. Need I go on? Suffice it to say that an aspiring authoritarian has a well-crafted plan to thwart a fair election — but the opposition, what little there is, doesn’t have a unified, careful, decisive plan to stop him.
Then there’s all the help that Trump is going to have stealing the election. You know what’s coming, and so do I. Everyone from the Kremlin to your local unfriendly billionaires are going to barrage Facebook with propaganda — and because there’s money to be made, Zuck is going to grin like a dork, and look the other way.)
But those are only the least urgent, most superficial things my bad feeling whispers at me, to tell you the truth. The economist in me and the survivor of authoritarianism in me — they’re whispering truer truths to me right about now, ones I can’t ignore, I can’t deny, things I don’t want to say or admit or even think much about — but have to anyways.
Here’s the first one.
America’s up against not just Trump and his cronies — but against the tides of history itself. And history is a mighty, mighty force, like a great river. The few who’ve swum across its tides and lived to tell the tale? Well, they barely exist. Let me explain what I mean by that.
There’s one single force that foretells the rise of authoritarian-fascism in a nation: fresh, growing poverty, which breeds discontentment, anger, and eventually, hate. That hate is channeled by demagogues, targeted at long-hated minorities, who are blamed for all a society’s ills — which, in truth, they have nothing to do with.
It’s an old, old story, as old as time. Weimar Germany became Nazi Germany by way of Hitler, who blamed the Jews. A once vibrant and liberal Muslim world became a fanatical hotbed of extremism, by way of mullahs, who blame everyone from women to gays to “heretics.” Even Athens, the birthplace of democracy itself, fell prey to this vicious cycle, and fell to the Thirty Tyrants, as poverty and insecurity grew.
The latest example of poverty and despair igniting fascist-authoritarian collapse? America. Let me outline how grave the situation is. Just a quarter of working age Americans now have what would be considered decent jobs in any other nation. Another 25% work go-nowhere McJobs, what economists politely call “ low-income service jobs,” jobs with no benefits, protections, upward mobility, raises, security, on which you can’t support a family. And the remaining 50% are either unemployed, underemployed, or “discouraged,” meaning they’ve given up entirely.
Let me say it again. Just 25% of working age Americans have decent jobs. Everyone else is trying to eke out a living. And mostly, they’re failing. That’s why suicide and depression are skyrocketing. It’s why millennials can’t afford to start families, and are so traumatized they barely have sex. It’s why the birthrate is plummeting. How the middle class became a minority, and the dream died with it. Why 80% of American households live paycheck to paycheck, 75% struggle to pay basic bills, and 70% can’t raise a few hundred dollars for an emergency.
This is one great tide of history. One almost inescapable mechanism of cause and effect. The impoverishment of a society leads almost always to authoritarian collapse.
Now, most people — especially Americans — think that’s the other way around. They think authoritarianism breeds poverty. That’s exactly backwards. Authoritarianism doesn’t make people poor so much as people being poor breeds authoritarianism first. You only have to look at history to understand that. Why did peasants and serfs submit to being under the thumbs of kings and nobles, who were mostly violent, idiotic men with swords and guns? Because they were too poor to ever muster the resources to do anything about it. They were exhausted, drained, uneducated, illiterate, broken in the mind, spirit, heart. That’s why it took human civilization millennia to ever really develop beyond the age of empire.
The impoverishment of a society almost always leads to authoritarian collapse. Weimar Germany, Stalinist Russia, Maoist China, Islam in the late 20th century — I could go on forever. The examples of societies who have resisted this tide of history are so few and far between that they’re almost nonexistent.
What tends to happen is the precise opposite: societies have to become achingly, grindingly poor, reach a point of total catastrophe and ruin — before they wake up, come to their senses, and finally change. That’s Europe’s story. Only after World War II — the absolute devastation of it — did it become the place that’s synonymous with modernity and civilization today. Mere upheaval, as in World War I — even that wasn’t enough. Almost nobody escapes this tide of history. Nobody, in fact, that I can think of at all.
That means that America would have to be something truly, well, exceptional, to brook the tide of impoverishment breeding authoritarianism. Is that really the case? I imagine we’ll find out. But like I said, I have a bad feeling. History tells me that this challenge is much, much greater than most Americans think it is.
That brings me to the second reason I have a bad feeling, which is, well…Americans.
For Trump to really lose this election — not even by a landslide, just to lose it by a slender margin — three groups need to vote against him like they mean it. Young people, minorities, and those now notorious suburban housewives, by which we mean “downwardly mobile white women.”
I hate to have to say it, but I see absolutely no evidence yet that such a thing is happening. We need some kind of tidal wave of feelings rising from these groups, and I don’t feel it at the magnitude that we need it.
Young people, it seems to me, are just as tuned out and apathetic as they’ve been for a decade or more now. I don’t blame them. Joe Biden isn’t exactly a millennial or gen Z heartthrob, and neither is Kamala Harris. What I mean by that is that young Americans lean left — because they understand viscerally that they lived in a failed capitalist society, that capitalism has failed them the way communism failed Soviets. To Americans pundits, their young are “far” left — but they’re not, they’re mostly just minor-league social democrats in global terms.
But that perspective isn’t represented at all in the Democratic Presidential and VP choices. You couldn’t have more sober and boring neoliberals than Biden and Harris at all, really. And even though Biden’s a good dude, like Kamala, he’s not exactly a revolutionary, or even a reformist. He’s just…the establishment, all over again. “Better than Trump!” you cry. Definitely. Without a doubt. But young people aren’t exactly whooping with excitement — and that’s the point.
The same is true for minorities. Sure, if all you read is the New York Times, you’d think Kamala Harris was the second coming of MLK. But if you actually talk to minorities, you’ll hear a more rounded, skeptical point of view. It goes something like this. Kamala had to act like a white dude to ascend to power — and what’s the point of that? It obviates being a minority in the first place. If you have to act like them to gain power…then you’ve become them…and nothing changes. Different actor, same game.
Now, if all you listen to is pundits, you’ll never quite hear that perspective. But I think it’s a little insulting to think minorities are, well, so dumb that they’ll vote for someone just because they’re one of their own, according to skin color. I’m brown — should I vote for Kamala just because she’s half brown? Come on now, that’s mildly offensive, not to mention hilariously illogical. The point of view about minorities being presented by American punditry — most of which is white, remember — is way, way too simplistic to accord with lived reality. But what else is new? The point is this: just as young people are apathetic, minorities are skeptical and wary, too.
That brings me to the third critical constituency: soccer moms. Listen, I love soccer moms. No, not that way. I mean something more like I basically am a soccer mom, if a brown dude can be one. Hey, I get to choose my own pronouns now, right? I take my puppy to the park and hang out with all the other moms.
Recent history has shown us something funny, dismal, and surreal. Who decided the vote for Trump? All those nice white ladies. Who said they’d never vote for Trump? You guessed it. Who ignored Trump’s horrific history of misogyny, as in ‘grab ’em by the pssy’? Who had some kind of weird, deep hatred for Hillary, and chose Donald Trump over her? All those nice, polite soccer moms.*
White dudes — much maligned — ended up, in the last election, being a little more honest. They’ll tell you the batshit crazy stuff Americans believe to your face. “Nobody should have healthcare!!” “Wait, Bob, not even…your kids?” “No! They have to learn to stand on their two feet!!” “But what if they get — ” “Hey, only the strong survive, brochacho!! There’s no room for the weak around here!!” So white dudes we have a reasonably good read on: most of them, as in the majority, are fairly terrible people (sorry, white dudes), who, despite living in the 21st century, believe that nobody in society deserves any form of basic human rights, except maybe guns and beer and possibly obligatory sex from women. That’s a fact, by the way, even though I’ve put it in a funny way: Trump leads among white dudes by close to ten points.
So what if white women feel the same way — but just won’t admit it? That’s exactly what happened in 2016. The secret hate vote emerged, as in, the polls were wrong, because lots of people who said “Oh my God! I’d never vote for that hateful bigot”…turned around and…did. And most of those people — the secret hate voters — were women. The much maligned downwardly mobile American white lady. Soccer moms. If white ladies feel the same way white dudes do — and just won’t admit it, like last time — then…bang!!…Trump wins all over again. Even if just half of them do, he wins. He doesn’t even have to contest the results. He just…wins.
Now. How much do you trust the white suburban moms of America? Like I said, I’m a fan of soccer moms. But do I trust them? That’s a very different question. I only have history to guide me. And history, like I said, tells us that American soccer moms may very well repeat what they did in 2016. Everyone makes mistakes. People grow and learn. But it’s also true that people don’t change, that they stay the same in deep ways, that growth and maturity are hard-won are rare and precious.
I have a bad feeling about all that. I think the soccer moms of America might just turn out to do an about-face in the voting booth, like last time, and put Trump right back into office. Adding fuel to that fire in my mind is the question of whether they’ll really vote for Harris. Half black, half brown, the embodiment of everything that the downwardly white American lady, possibly secretly embittered and resentful…hated…just four short years ago. Is that much growth and maturity in so short a time really possible?
So now you know why. Why I have a bad feeling about this election. America, standing against the great tides of history, trying to swim upstream — a poor country now, trying to undo authoritarianism. How many have managed that? Very, very few. Young people, who seem as alienated as ever — with good reason. Minorities, whose views aren’t being examined or even thought about very carefully at all. And the vexing possibility of the betrayal by the white lady, or even just the American lady who wants to be more white. The one who secretly decided the election for a misogynist, a bigot, a crook, a man so brutish and violent he’s the very embodiment of patriarchy. Do people change that much in four short years?
History says no, my friends, to all these things. It say America can’t swim upstream now. Look how feeble it is, a wounded thing. It says young people won’t vote much for a candidate and his pick who don’t represent their preferences much at all. That minorities aren’t as simple as majorities make them out to be, and pandering to them rarely works well. And that people don’t change nearly so fast as circumstance needs them to, that wisdom comes slower than opportunity, which is the true source of all human grief.
Maybe the truest and darkest truth of them all about time, people, and dust, is the only one left worth believing in, I think to myself sometimes. It took Europe becoming ruins, mass grave, flames, bones — before it grew up, into gentleness, and rebuilt itself as the paragon of civilization and modernity. The growth of our capacity to love comes to us only through seeing what might have been turn to ashes. To mature, to expand in grace, beauty, truth, goodness, first we must fall down.

How To Start A Flip Flop House Business
How To Get A Construction Loan To Flip A House
When I buy more pricey homes I generally am willing to pay more than 70 percent and when I purchase low-cost houses I pay less than 70 percent. I also consider how big the repair task is going to be and just how much cash I will have into an offer.
Top 3 Books On House Flipping – Modest Money
For novice financiers, I believe the 70 percent guideline is an excellent method to get an idea of what to pay for a flip. I would never rely only on the rule. You have to make certain your repair estimates are accurate for the guideline to work. In order to utilize the guideline, you require to understand numerous things.
You can not think on the value or have a substantial value variety. Not knowing the ARV is an excellent method to obtain in problem. You need to understand what the repairs will cost as well to utilize the rule. The repair work constantly seem to cost more than you think they will and take longer than you think too.
The rule does not think about taxes, insurance, funding, utilities, upkeep, selling expenses, or purchasing costs. These costs can vary greatly in different markets and on each deal. That is why I like to draw up all the expenses on each offer. Many investors try to stretch the 70 percent guideline or whatever rule they use when the marketplace is appreciating and it is harder to discover offers.
A lot of flippers got into trouble throughout the real estate crisis due to the fact that they assumed the markets would always go up and they didn’t need to get as good of a deal. Even in an increasing market, you ought to stick to your rules and guidelines, since it is much better to have fewer deals that make cash than a lot of deals that lose cash.
That does not indicate I constantly adhere to the 70 percent rule, but I do not change my investing design because it is harder to find offers. You should be able to discover handle practically any market if you understand what you are doing. Property wholesalers attempt to flip homes right now without doing any repair work.
A wholesaler requires to know what another financier will pay for a home and the 70 percent rule is a great guideline to know what you can wholesale a home for. Wholesalers will need to understand what financiers are paying in their market for flips or rentals. The rule can be a great tool if investors are paying 70 percent for turns, but if investors are only paying 65 percent the wholesalers will need to change.
I hear financiers say you can’t purchase from the MLS any more; there is excessive competitors! It holds true that there are many individuals attempting to get an excellent offer from the MLS, however that does not imply it is not possible. There are still numerous offers if you understand how to find them, and to me, it is simpler to purchase off the MLS than other locations.
How Much Does It Cost To Flip A House
With the trustee sale, you need to pay money in 2 hours and numerous times can not see inside the house prior to you purchase it. I would rather purchase off the MLS where I can finish an assessment, see your house, and get a loan. REO (foreclosures) and short sale stock has actually reduced in many markets.
I am still getting REOs and short sales, however more of my purchases have been standard or estate sales. Prices are likewise rising in numerous areas of the country, and that creates an opportunity for financiers. With prices rising more, fair-market sellers are able to offer their homes. A fair-market sale is a term used to describe a home that is not in a short sale situation or in foreclosure.
Many homeowners bought foreclosures and homes in disrepair after your home crisis. Not every property owner had the cash or time to fix your house once they moved in. Some of those property owners need to sell a house that remains in poor condition. If a home needs repair work, that develops opportunities.
You do not have to discover a foreclosure to get a great deal! With rising prices, some homes are underpriced by realty agents or sellers. I have bought a number of houses that were underpriced just recently, and I either had my offer accepted right now or won a multiple-offer scenario. I utilized a brand-new professional a while back when I had a great deal of tasks and my current professionals could not keep up. I got a suggestion from my broker and a number of other representatives in my office for a contractor they had actually used. The professional was a contractor and appeared to understand what he was talking about and gave great comprehensive bids.
He told me he had a fantastic crew and could manage as much work as I might offer him. He ended up completing one task on spending plan, however the second task was not even started for two months!I had presumed whatever was working out since that was what he had actually told me, but the property was 40 minutes away, and I had actually not physically seen the work began yet.
I was in for a big surprise when I went to visit the home, which I believed was nearly done and no work had been started! I called the specialist, and he provided me a story about a lot of tasks and his workers getting sick. He had been telling me whatever was going terrific and the work was practically done prior to I went to the website (how to flip houses with no money down).
That job was ultimately completed about 4 months after it was begun and 3 months after it was expected to be done. I never ever used that specialist again, not since it took so long to complete the task, but because he lied to me about the work being done or had not visited the site for months.
In my experience, the more communication and oversight you supply on your homes the much better task the specialist will do. I have had contractors I have actually dealt with on 20 tasks, and if I do not continue them, they will get extremely slow. If a specialist does an excellent job as soon as, it does not indicate they will always do an excellent job.
How To Make A Million Dollars A Year Flipping Houses
He stopped visiting his worksites and started informing me tasks were done when they were not – how long does it take to flip a house. His prices went up, and the time he took to complete jobs increased since he was never at the website and did not monitor his workers. Here are a couple of tips on how to ensure your contractor is doing a great task.
youtube
I want to ensure they know what they are speaking about, and I wish to get an idea of what they charge. A specialist needs to tell you his per hour rate, the number of people he has on his crew, and for how long it takes them to do an average job (how to report flipping a house on tax return).
Flipping A House? How To Flip A House The Right Way – Realtor …
If I like what I hear on the phone, I will establish a meeting at the office. I will discuss how we work and what we anticipate out of them. I even offer a list that details our company, how we pay, and why we are excellent to work with.
If they are not on time, I usually end it there. If they do alright in the office interview, I will meet them at a job website and fo over what I desire to be done. Attempt to speak to the professional as much as possible and find out about his family and what kind of tasks he normally does.
I had one specialist I spoke with reference he had two recent DUIs consisting of one while he was on the job! After I meet the contractor, I will ask to write up a bid and email it to me or call me when it is done. This is another test to see how rapidly they get me a quote and if they get back to me (how to report flipping a house on tax return).
It was simple to remove them given that if they can’t send me a quote, they most likely can’t do the job. Besides referrals here are some other ways to discover contractors: Another method to meet great contractors at big shops is to visit the store early in the early morning and see who is purchasing big amounts of materials.
You understand they have at least one task going now considering that they are purchasing materials. Some shops will also provide you the names and numbers of professionals who they understand. You generally need to be a frequent consumer at those stores considering that they are not expected to offer out names or numbers.
It is complimentary for specialists to publish on Craigslist, so you can get a broad range of individuals to interview. We typically find inexpensive contractors on Craigslist since it is complimentary. They can not afford to market on the more expensive websites like AngiesList, Thumbtack, or HomeAdvisor. You need to take your time when speaking with professionals from Craigslist and ensuring they are legitimate before you hire them or provide them any cash.
How To Flip A House In 5 Simple Steps
Once again, you have to inspect references completely when using these resources. Yelp will give evaluations on contractors if they have actually done enough work, and that can help you decide who to talk to. Home Depot uses professional services no matter where you are in the nation. Despite the fact that they are more pricey than a regional contractor might be, they offer basic work and guarantee their work.
How To Flip A House For Profit: Basic Beginner’s Guide – Upnest
These companies may not deal with a financier that has just one little task, however if you can offer them consistent work in one area, they might be a great option. Vineyard Solutions offers contracting services in the majority of states throughout the nation. They have been around for several years and do property maintenance on lots of REO residential or commercial properties.
Flipping Houses: Real Estate Investing Basics – Homeia
I utilize Angie’s List, and it has provided a great deal of great information (how to save money when flipping a house). It was only $7.99 for the entire year, and I have no idea why I waited this long to utilize it. They list contractors in my area, their location of competence, and in-depth evaluations from individuals who have actually used them.
You can use Angie’s List for many other services besides professionals. There is a huge variance in the quantity of money different contractors charge. Some professionals will charge $40 an hour and others will charge $100 – how to flip houses and make a profit. The $100 an hour contractors might do amazing work, but most property owners and financiers will not need that costly of a professional.
Many professionals do not like dealing with financiers because they know investors won’t pay as much as homeowners. A lot of house owners have no idea just how much repairs ought to cost, so they work with a contractor and pay whatever the expense is. Most investors have a great concept of what the repair work should cost and savvier when it concerns handling specialists.
When your flip is completed, you have to sell it. Numerous flippers make the error of pricing a house too high to make up for additional expenses they experienced or attempting to sell a house themselves to make extra money. There are some basics principals that allow people to get the most cash for their home.
Staging can imply a great deal of things to a great deal of people. Staging can indicate spending countless dollars to rent furniture for an uninhabited home, or it can indicate selecting up and organizing a house that is lived in. When we offer a home, we do not stage them at all.
I know many financiers who swear by staging and feel it brings them far more cash than if it were not staged. I believe staging can create an extremely positive impact if done properly. You can’t toss a table and 2 chairs in the living room and call it staged.
How Much Does It Take To Flip A House
Staging need to reveal possible buyers what the home would feel as if they lived there. Personally, I like how big a home feels when it is completely uninhabited with brand name brand-new paint and carpet. Another factor to consider is what other sellers are carrying out in your market. Is every uninhabited house being staged? If all your competition is staging home, you may have to stage your house if it is uninhabited also.
Even if you are not staging your home, you need to make it look as good as possible. Have it expertly deep cleaned. Numerous individuals clean houses themselves however do an uninspired job. Make certain the yard is trimmed, weeds are pulled, things are tidy. Cut trees away from sidewalks. Open all the window blinds and curtains.
Ensure the driveway and sidewalks are shoveled if there is snow on the ground. When you sell a home, the important things that will attract purchasers more than anything else is the rate. Purchasers and genuine estate representatives use the cost to figure out possible properties when they browse the MLS.
If your home is priced higher than all the other homes in the area, it can be really difficult to offer. Most purchasers have expectations for what particular areas cost, and if a house is substantially more than that expectation, purchasers might never ever consider that house or see it. You may likewise encounter an appraisal concern, which I will speak about shortly.
In a seller’s market, there is much more flexibility with the asking rate. I will price homes a little high in a seller’s market because there is very little competitors. In a seller’s market, many purchasers are trying to find houses, but there are just a few houses for sale. Even if I price my home a little high, buyers will still look at your house and might provide me less than I am asking, but still make a deal.

Mako and Bolin’s Financial Situation
I can’t be the only one who’s ever sat down and watched something and laughed only to realize four years later how messed up the joke is. And I think it’s kind of bizarre that Legend of Korra is a hotbed of problematic humor. From season 1 to season 4 there have been moments and gags that are played for laughs, but are actually incredibly dark and speak to serious issues in the real world.
Bolin/Eska comes to mind, but that’s an obvious one.
A less obvious, but far more insidious example occurs in season 1, episode 3, The Revelation. I don’t know about you, but I chuckled as I watched Butakha hand Mako his prize money only to take all of it back immediately. Now, as a viewer I understood that Mako and Bolin were poor, but it was really only after I started to think about it that I realized what that entailed, because we’re never shown the extent of their poverty.
Now this is a huge issue in all media. In most TV shows, being poor still means living in a nice apartment and having nice things while complaining about money all the time. It does not mean living in a room in someone else’s house only one missed paycheck or breakup away from living out of your own car. Unfortunately that TV version with the nice apartment is absolutely not true and one of my best friends is one bad day away from living out of her car (actually she’ll probably move in with me, because I don’t let my friends sleep in their cars if I can help it).
What I’m saying is that the media doesn’t actually accurately depict poverty and that’s a damn shame, because it really skews our sense of reality. And it’s jarring to realize that this distortion is present in a cartoon show, because in animation you can micro-manage every single detail of presentation. The only limit (aside from budget) is one’s imagination. Every detail and every frame is a choice.
So, let’s talk about Mako, Bolin, and their lives just above the poverty line.
What is Mako’s job? What does he do for a living?
Well, based on that scene in Legend of Korra where Mako gets his paycheck and then watches Butakha take it right back, I’d say Mako is a prizefighter. Now, prizefighting was good money in the 1920s, but only if you made it into the big leagues. That was where the hundred-thousand dollar prize money could be had...
Now, prizefighting was a good gig if you were desperate or wanted to get rich quick. Not the best, of course, even an experienced fighter could end up with serious injuries that could take him out of the ring and put him out of work permanently. But it was better than the factories. State-side, the 1920s were a time when factory workers in New York made roughly 70 to 80 cents per hour working 40 to 50 hours per week (on average, that means that some factories paid less than 80 cents and some paid more). Meanwhile, in San Francisco, manufacturing workers were paid about 90 cents per hour and worked roughly 44 hour weeks. (You can find more information on the pay grades during the 1920s here.)
But Republic City isn’t based on New York or San Francisco. It’s based on Hong Kong. I don’t know much about unions or factory labor in China during the 1920s and even if I could find that information, I’m not entirely sure it would be accurate for Republic City. One thing I’m relatively sure of is that factory conditions were probably worse than anything the US had to offer. It’s also likely that Chinese factory workers made significantly less than their state-side counterparts during the 1920s (thank you colonialism).
Of course, even taking all this into account, we can’t quite be certain of the conditions in Republic City, because we have non-bender Henry Ford--I mean, Hiroshi Sato, running future industries. One of the many confusing inclusions, which distort the Republic City narrative. And while Henry Ford was famous for being the first to pay his workers more and limit their working hours, it wasn’t really a ‘fair’ wage as much as it was a bonus for not quitting (and adhering to cultural standards).
Now, I mentioned factory wages here, because the Fire Ferrets aren’t big-league prize-fighters. They’re not making enough to live the high life. As a matter of fact, as that scene with Butaka illustrated, Mako and Bolin are just barely making enough to scrape by. Every time Mako and Bolin lose a game, they risk losing their home and starving on the streets. So it makes sense that Mako would be supplementing their income with whatever factory or power plant work he can get (Bolin’s not exactly helpful when it comes to this kind of thing).
Maybe the reason that the Fire Ferrets have the early morning training slot is because they’re rookies. Maybe it’s because Butakha feels comfortable taking advantage of them. Or maybe it’s because Mako needs to get the training out of the way early so he can go down and see if he can find any factory work at all so he and his brother can eat at least once per day.
Keep in mind, Mako can’t always find work and not always for a decent wage:
Episode 3: Revelations Mako: Hey, I found some work down at the power plant. Made some decent money.
This statement implies two things: 1, Mako has to hunt for work, probably regularly. This means that he’s not ‘employed’/does not have a stable job. 2, the jobs that Mako works don’t often pay that well. While we don’t know what decent money means in Republic City, we do know that the wages for these types of jobs are not high paying in any sense of the word (based on the setting).
Implications
Prizefighting was a dangerous occupation, even if it could make an individual famous. This work didn’t pay well until the fighter reached the big leagues and often times fighters needed a sponsor to foot the bill for expenses. Factory work was also dangerous--people died or were crippled by the grueling work factories demanded.
Now, based on the show, we can be certain that sponsorship was probably necessary to becoming a successful prizefighter. Remember that the Fire Ferrets needed to contribute 30,000 yuans to the prize pot. And in pro-bending, if a team couldn’t make that prize-pot contribution, they couldn’t participate in the championship. I can’t actually say much about the factories, because the show spent so little time exploring working conditions in Republic City.
So, here we have two young men, orphaned by a violent fire bender, who are struggling to survive. They started by doing whatever they could to make ends meet in the city and have recently decided to try and survive through prizefighting. When their regular winnings can’t pay for food and shelter they work long hours at the factories or at the power plants (industrial manufacturing, which is also dangerous work) on top of practice to make ends meet.
Mako and Bolin are living one bad day away from homelessness before Korra and Asami show up.
But we never see that. There is never a moment where Mako acknowledges that winning the prize money could set them up for life and give them better opportunities. There’s never a moment where the show explores the fact that Korra probably saved them from starvation when she stepped in for their water bending teammate.
Instead, Mako is described as a hard-ass and all his efforts to train his team into tip-top shape are all about ‘winning.’ But that’s not what’s actually going on here. What’s going on here is the economic disenfranchisement and exploitation of orphans and if Mako and Bolin’s story is common in Republic City... Then it’s no surprise that the triads are as strong as they are.
If crime in Republic City is this bad, then that means that there are lots of kids who are on the street. Kids who, like Mako and Bolin, are going to need to figure out a means of survival. And the triads are willing to employ orphaned children, which means that most orphans probably grow up in the triads, because the triads replace family.
This creates a direct pipeline from orphan to criminal.
Now this gets into some of my concerns about the depiction of the equalist movement in Legend of Korra. The audience actually sees Mako and Bolin struggle to get by (even though their situation is never fully explored). The audience also sees the destitute and homeless, bender and non-bender alike, live in harmony without equalist intervention (the hobo and his community in Episode 11: Skeletons in the Closet). There are a lot of subtle, but very real suggestions that benders aren’t as wealthy or powerful as the equalist movement makes them out to be and, compounded with Hiroshi’s role in the revolution, this gives a troubling undertone to the equalist revolution.
It’s important that creators at least try to accurately represent poverty, because people still experience it. And the absence of any significant representation is deeply troubling, not just because causes so many tonal and thematic issues within a story, but because people actually live in some very poor conditions. Since we never see those stories, we never realize how bad things can get and, as a result we forget that real, likable people get stuck in horrible situations.
It’s disappointing that no time or energy was spent exploring the difficulties that Mako and Bolin faced. Their experiences could have provided some insight into the equalist movement, the economic inequalities within Republic City, and given the city itself a sense of character. Instead, these issues were glossed over for a love triangle and pro-bending...
I’m trying to distract you while the Beta finishes edits. Is it working?

Why is my car insurance so high?
"Why is my car insurance so high?
I have full coverage insurance on my 2005 Honda civic and I am paying a little over $850 every six months. Every quote I get isn't much better. Why is it so expensive? My insurance lady says that it's because I am a young driver with a newer car. But my YOUNGER sister has a car 2 years newer than mine and she pays about $350 less every six months. I have no tickets on my record. I did have my license suspended about 5 years ago. Why is it so expensive and how can I get it down? I can't afford this sh* t. Thank you!

Why do people keep comparing health insurance mandates to car insurance mandates?
Car insurance mandates are done at the STATE level, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Yet people (the president included) continue to claim that a FEDERAL mandate to buy insurance is no different than being required to cover your car. (Completely ignoring that you have to BUY a car before you must get insurance...the govt's basically saying they own your body...insure it or be taxed) So isn't a FEDERAL mandate unconstitutional unless you plan on writing an amendment to the Constitution so that such a mandate is in accordance with the Tenth Amendment?? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27384.html The questions from ABCs George Stephanopoulos highlighted a politically dangerous new aspect of the health reform debate for Obama as critics from Republican leaders to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say his reform proposals amount to a middle-class tax increase. Obama promised during the campaign that Americans earning less than $250,000 a year would not see any tax increases from an Obama administration. Obama strongly denied that the mandate amounts to a tax increase saying it was no different than requiring people to have auto insurance and charging a penalty if they dont. He also said it was important for everyone to have insurance so that people who do carry insurance dont have to shoulder the load for people who dont. The excise tax is designed as an enforcement mechanism to ensure people will carry insurance.""
What is the average repair cost to homeowner for property damage caused by a typical earthquake in California?
We are considering buying an earthquake insurance for a resident home in California. But the earthquake policy typically covers only 85% of the house rebuild cost, homeowners first have to pay the 15% of that (the deductible). Say the house insured for $300K, then homeowners have to pay $45K first before the insurance comes in to cover the rest for $255K. Why can you 16 years old own cars in America?
Hello, So when I'm watching MTV or whatever television program here in the Netherlands I'm noticing that so many 16 year old drive a car. But where do you guys get the money from? Because a really crappy cheap car cost about 1000 euro's and than you need to pay a 390 euro (507 dollars) a month. I'm 16 too and with my 40 hours of work in a month I make 200 euro (260 dollars), so I can't afford a car now. (at least not paying every single month 390 euros) Nevertheless in the Netherlands you must be 18 years old to drive a car, but even when I'm 18 I think I won't make a 390 euro a month (only for my car). So do your parents pay? Don't you have to pay taxes or whatever? Thanks. David Calculation: Cheap car = 1000 euro Good cheap car = 3000 euro Average insurance 18 year old = 100 euro a month Can't find translation but road taxes = 80 euro a month cost of maintance = 80 euro a month Average driving 1000km a month with 7/100L = 70 * 1,80= 126 euro We pay 1.80 euro a liter (benzine) = 1 gallon = 3,8L = 6,84 euro's = 8,9 dollar per gallon so: 390 euro = 507 dollars a month""

Should I accept this settlement offer from an insurance company?
I was in a car accident when a girl blew a red light and smashed into my side. $10,000 in auto damages that was fixed rights away. (btw she admitted fault to police so im 0% at fault legally) I went to emergency room for precautionary reasons. That cost $1450. Then little by little the pain started to kick in. I had neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain and terrible pain in my knee. I had MRI on back, knee and neck because those were the worst. That total was about $1800. I was told by the doctor that the mri on my back said I have two herniated disks and I should do therapy. I listened to him and went four times per week for four months. The Mri on my neck came back good. But my knee showed a tear in mcl. I had surgery on that and had to see the surgeon in his office twice plus hospital bills which equals a bill of $14,500. I then needed 2 months of therapy on my knee. Also all the pain meds ive been taking through out the whole process is around $600. I had a ekg for my nerves to test if they were good and that cost $800. So after doing my research I find websites that say the settlement amount s should be all bills multiplied by 3 depending on the persons insurance carrier and coverage. Well this person has $200,000/$200,000. So far all my bills have been paid through my insurance. When I do the math for what all the bills are is comes to roughly $28350. I didn't include the four days per week for therapy and seeing the doctors. That has to be a big chunk also. My lawyer called me and said he was made an offer of $42,000. He gets a 1/3 of that. I think they low balled me soooo bad on this. If i use the X3 multiplier method then it should have been somewhere around $85,000 offer. Remember I didn't even include all the visits to the therapy. Is this a good offer or should I decline and wait for second offer? My lawyer thinks we should wait it out because he has such a big insurance policy that we can get much more especially since that was our first offer.""

I got a new car in January and my insurance went from $25/mo with the '77 Ford Granada I had to over $200/mo with the 2001 Chevy Cavalier. Sad thing is my insurance per month is more than my car payment. Now I can't even afford to pay my insurance. Have Democrats forgotten that Candidate Obama opposed forcing people to buy health insurance?
http://www.campaignforliberty.com/blog.php?view=27950 As Obama said in the January 31st primary debate: Senator Clinton. . . believes that we have to force people who don't have health insurance to buy it. Otherwise, there will be a lot of people who don't get it. I don't see those folks. And I think that it is important for us to recognize that if, in fact, you are going to mandate the purchase of insurance and it's not affordable, then there's going to have to be some enforcement mechanism that the government uses. And they may charge people who already don't have health care fines, or have to take it out of their paychecks. And that, I don't think, is helping those without health insurance. That is a genuine difference.""

What would the insurance be on a 2004 Saturn Vue?
My parents are being extremely kind and letting me get my license. Along with the license, they are offering to pay half of the price for a car for my and my brother. We are extremely tight on money, but they are being incredibly generous, so I thought it would be good to get an older, but safe, fuel-efficient car. I thought a Saturn Vue would be perfect. I'm 16 and my brother is 18. We are all going to be on the same insurance plan, and we are both (in my opinion) very good drivers. Does anyone know how much the insurance would be on a 2004 Saturn Vue? If it's too much, we would go with either a Ford Focus or a Honda Civic (we wanted a bigger car because we have both been rear-ended in our car driving home from high school. Both cars needed thousands of dollars of repairs and we needed rehab from our injuries as well. The bigger the car, the safer it is...while still keeping that fuel-efficiency). Thanks so much!""
Why is my car insurance so high?
I have full coverage insurance on my 2005 Honda civic and I am paying a little over $850 every six months. Every quote I get isn't much better. Why is it so expensive? I’ve mentioned the sad state of the U.S. broadcasting industry these days, with big companies eating up smaller ones like never before. There are too few independently-owned stations left — run by business people, some better meaning than others — who actually live in the market they are supposed to serve on the public airwaves. Decisions were made in the building. The buck stopped there. (Last February, I wrote about the state of the media and especially journalism, bringing up Harry Truman.) Now, it’s mostly shareholders, money and politics that rule the roost.
Speaking of politics, government limits have been loosened or eliminated. For example, it used to be a group could not own more than five TV stations. Now, some own well over 100, having their say — often too much — in dozens of cities. Since going digital, a single station can have five subchannels and some of that spectrum was recently auctioned off in an event held by the feds themselves! Conglomerates say they can do more, but the reality is fewer people are working for them than the earlier owners and they will do whatever they can to save a dime. (To too many, the goal of storm coverage means being first and then promoting the hell out of it.)
Bonten’s Tri-Cities stations, from the signature below my work email
That brings me to our former ABC competition in the Tri-Cities. For 13 months, I was digital manager at the #1 station, WCYB, and it was probably the best job I ever had. I participated in daily department head meetings, learned from great news directors and taught new reporters. It was part of the five-city Bonten Media Group that was bought by Sinclair after I suddenly and unexpectedly moved back to Philadelphia.
No, WKPT-ABC19 was far from the best but they returned to having a local newscast for their last several years, at least on weekdays. They deserved credit for that. They’re also locally owned, which is so rare these days. That means they had no sister-TV stations to help, no opportunity to benefit from economy of scale, they were the only one of the big three network affiliates on UHF, and it all hurt. But they continued until their partner since the 1960s, ABC, pulled the rug from under them and switched to a subchannel of the conglomerate Media General-owned (now swallowed up by Nexstar) CBS affiliate. So no more newscasts there, and the Tri-Cities have had just two instead of three local sources of TV news for the past year and a half. The people deserve choices and this limits competition in a pretty poor, rural, conservative region.
The reason I’m writing now is I happened to find this 6pm, next-to-last newscast of their main anchor retiring on Thanksgiving, 2015. It happened about two months before the surprise and everyone still doing news lost their jobs. The 11pm newscast segment was too long to email. I didn’t know about Dropbox in those days. You’ve probably never seen anything like this sendoff!

This was the press release from Monday, Jan. 4, 2016:
ABC Moves Its Affiliation in Tri-Cities TN/VA TV Market
George DeVault, President of Holston Valley Broadcasting, announced today that the ABC Television Network affiliation for the Tri-Cities market is being moved from WKPT-TV.1 in Kingsport to WJHL.2 in Johnson City. The change becomes effective February 1.
According to DeVault, “ABC presented to us a proposal that would have had us paying the network at least 15 million dollars over the next 5 years. Although we ultimately agreed to meet the network’s terms, ABC told us a few days ago that it had decided to explore other options in the market. WKPT-TV had been negotiating in good faith with ABC since October of last year,” DeVault said.
“A large source of revenue for network-affiliated TV stations has become fees paid by cable and satellite carriers in return for consent for them to carry the local affiliate’s signal,” DeVault explained. “A large portion of those fees ultimately goes to the network, however. If the cable or satellite carrier refuses to meet the affiliate’s fees demand, the affiliate can pull its signal from the system.”
“The big systems operate in all or a great many TV markets. We operate in one,” DeVault said.
“Media General, which owns WJHL, operates in almost 50 markets and owns or effectively controls more than 70 stations. If it threatens to pull its network affiliate signals in every market where both it and the cable or satellite carrier operate, it has immensely more bargaining power than one independently-owned, family-owned station like WKPT-TV operating only in market number 97. That is why small operators like us are disappearing or being bought up by big group owners, and that is why networks like ABC prefer to be affiliated with the powerful group owners,” DeVault said.
WKPT-TV will become an independent TV station, not affiliated with a major network, effective February 1. “To stay in the TV business will be a tough financial challenge,” DeVault said. “Many among our present staff will lose their jobs. Most notably we will be going out of the local TV News business.”
“It all boils down to power and money,” DeVault concluded. “Our friends at WJHL did not precipitate this. It was all negotiated at the corporate level by ABC, of which we have been a loyal affiliate for over 46 years, and Media General’s corporate headquarters. The networks and their affiliates used to be loyal partners. We have been loyal to ABC to the end.”

No more newscasts, but what a farewell! I've mentioned the sad state of the U.S. broadcasting industry these days, with big companies eating up smaller ones like never before.

Stop Frugality From Leading To Lifestyle Deflation
Like many of you, I’m frugal to a fault. For 13 years after college, I saved 50% – 70% of my income partially due to humble living conditions. From 28-37 I drove a $8,000 car that depreciated to $3,000 even after my income grew by 3X. And even after I had finally escaped the corporate world in 2012, I still couldn’t stop saving at least 50% of my income.
By the third year of early retirement, however, I started seriously questioning the point of working and saving so much if the money was never going to be spent. Saving for retirement in retirement is illogical. I started getting angry at being unable to kick my frugality addiction to the curb. People with much less were spending so much more and having a great time doing so. Why couldn’t I be more carefree?
Despite my best efforts to spend more like everyone who posts about their fabulous lives on Facebook, touching principal still felt like a crime. Instead of relaxing as a good retiree should do, here’s what I did instead to maintain a 50%+ savings ratio:
* Worked on ways to generate $200,000 a year in passive income
* Took on part-time consulting gigs with three fintech companies over three years
* Continued publishing 3X a week on Financial Samurai
* Developed new online business partnerships
* Downsized to a smaller house to free up cash flow
* Bought a Honda Fit instead of a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
* Invested 90% of every dollar saved
Then one day, I burned out. I dropped all my consulting gigs, wrote the biggest e-mail autoresponder known to man saying I was too busy, and finally found some breathing room to spend a little more than normal.
Instead of limiting myself to $100 shoes, I ventured out and bought a $240 pair of shoes (on sale for 50% off of course). The guilty feeling only lasted for an hour while the pair of Tod’s loafers is still my favorite shoe three years later.
Instead of taking an Uber Pool to save $6 to go downtown, I began ordering my own Uber. I still feel guilty for some reason, but the feeling has lessened because I remind myself that time is way more valuable than money.
Instead of staying at a 3-star hotel in Angkor Wat, Cambodia, we decided to stay at a 5-star hotel for $100 more a night. We knew we were never coming back, so we also hired a private van with much needed AC to be our driver for $50 a day. It was so worth it.
Then I realized something. Keeping spending constant after a certain age eventually leads to lifestyle deflation because everything is relative. If everybody still watched cathode ray tube TVs, you’d be happy with your tube TV. But you’re no longer as happy when everybody else is watching a paper thin 4K TV. If you don’t at least increase your spending at the rate of inflation, your quality of life will begin to deteriorate because you can’t help but notice progress all around.
For those of you who can’t seem to lift your spending despite an increase in your income and net worth, let me share with you five ways for overcoming frugality so you can maximize your lifestyle. Dying with way too much is poor consumption planning.
Halting Lifestyle Deflation In Five Steps
1) Find your marginal spending ratio. Being overly frugal means you either don’t make enough money, fear your income won’t last, or are stuck mentally in a time when you didn’t make much money. There is no denying that having less money means you are forced to spend less. If you suddenly started making an extra $10 million a year, you bet your bottom dollar that you’d be able to spend more freely. Therefore, the easiest way to crush frugality is to make exponentially more money. By doing so, you can’t help but spend more.
The key to unlocking additional spending is determining how much extra money you need to make in order to spend an extra $1. Some consumers will spend an extra $1 when they only make 50 cents more. Others might require earning $10 to spend an extra $1. Earn enough to find your ratio for various things.
For example, I need to earn at least $500,000 more a year to feel comfortable spending $8,000 more on a first class ticket to Europe or Asia. Until then, I’ll sit in the middle seat near the toilet for 12 hours because $8,000 / 12 = $667/hour!
Related: When Do You Finally Feel Rich
2) Make your income more defensible. If your income and wealth are tied to the survival of a startup that has only 12 months left until it runs out of cash, there’s no way you’ll ever break free from frugality. Conversely, if you work in a massive corporation that never fires anybody and provides everyone a nice pension after 20+ years of service, you should be able to open up the wallet a little wider.
Nowadays, the best way to create a more defensible income is to build multiple income streams – including both passive and active incomes. If you can get to a passive income level that covers all your expenses while also having a day job income, you should be able to crush your frugal habits.
Achieving $200,000 passive income figure was a relief after 16 years of trying. It is more than my wife and I spend each year. When we added on corporate consulting income on top of online income, we finally stopped checking the price of food before ordering at a restaurant. We also didn’t care about the latest cost of an electronic gadget anymore because it was a business expense. We knew that worst case, even if our business went to hell, we’d have passive income made up of 10+ different sources that would carry us through on top of our principal.
3) Realize your mortality by calculating how much you’ll have left at age 100. Acknowledge your mortality and calculate how much you’ll have left at age 100. Just as most Americans don’t properly calculate their retirement target and plan for how to get there, many of us don’t calculate how much we’ll end up dying with if we don’t spend more. Right now you will be taxed at 40%+ on any wealth you leave behind after $5.49 million. Divide your current net worth by the difference between 100 and your age. If the number is greater than your average annual spending, you should be able to spend more freely.
At least every six months, I run my finances through Personal Capital’s Retirement Planner on my iPhone, and every time it says I’m in “Great Shape.” Love it! I imagine it’s kinda like being a beautiful person looking at him/herself in the mirror each morning. You know you’re beautiful and can’t get enough of yourself!
$1.2M turns into $20M+ in 50 years? Time to spend!
4) Find your forever home. Once you’ve purchased a home you see yourself living in for 10+ years, you’ll feel a tremendous amount of relief. Saving up for a home is the largest financial undertaking for most people, especially those who live in major cities. Therefore, once you’ve conquered the tallest mountain, everything else will feel like an ant hill. Food and clothing are cheap in comparison.
Buying a primary residence is like paying yourself first. You’ll build equity through forced savings and hopefully principal appreciation over time. If you’re renting, you’ll always wonder when your rent will go up or when the landlord will want to kick you out for whatever reason. As a result, you’ll have a tendency to hoard your money to pay for moving expenses, and potentially a more expense apartment since rents tend to always go up.
After finding and remodeling an affordable home in San Francisco with panoramic ocean views, I finally felt I could spend whatever excess cash flow I had on nicer things. Each stage of the remodeling process had me shelling out an extra $30,000 – $60,000 over a 3-6 month period. Once all the remodeling was done, it felt like I had an extra $10,000 a month to spend on whatever I wanted.
5) Set and achieve ambitious targets. The reason why the 1/10th rule for car buying is so powerful is because it forces people to tether their wants to achievement. Many people get mad when they want to buy a $40,000 car, but realize their $80,000 income means they should only purchase a ~$8,000 car. By flipping the equation and setting a goal to earn $400,000 a year, it motivates the buyer to work towards their desires. With all the extra hustle, it will allow the buyer to think twice about spending so much on something s/he really doesn’t need. And if the $400,000 income is achieved, then there will be no guilt spending so little.
Just like how you’ll feel so much better eating a cheeseburger after you’ve trained six months for a marathon, you’ll feel so much better spending money after taking years saving up for a certain stretch goal. The guy who got up to eat a cheeseburger after watching four hours of football isn’t going to feel as good as the marathon runner!
When I started suffering from tennis elbow at the age of 33, I made it a goal to go undefeated in one season at the 4.5 level. It was my way of giving the middle finger to pain. When I went 12-0 with various doubles partners in 2012, I felt an enormous amount of pride. It was easy to replace my ratty tennis bag with holes with a snazzy looking one. Three years later when I got bumped up to 5.0 (top 1%), my tennis budget blew wide open because players aren’t supposed to improve after the age of 35.
In early 2015, I made an ambitious goal of growing organic traffic (not paid) to one million pageviews a month. After consistently hitting over 1 million organic pageviews a month for six months in 2017, I felt zero guilt paying $15,800 for a hot tub and $58,000 for a used Range Rover because it took me eight years of writing three posts a week. To understand how difficult that is, try writing one 1,500 word post a month. Now multiply that effort by 10.
Enjoy Your Money
Most of us are afraid of being judged by others for how we spend our money. But the reality is, everybody’s financial situation is different. Paying $10,000 for a first class ticket is ridiculous for someone making less than $100,000 a year. But if you’re worth $100 million, $10,000 is like a dollar bus fare for the rest of us.
You can overcome your frugality disease by starting small, and working your way up. The easiest way to reduce your frugal habits is by making more money and achieving certain stretch goals. It’s when you buy things with money you don’t deserve (trust fund, inheritance, lottery, using a credit card, your spouse’s income, etc) that your conscience may start making you feel terrible about your spending.
You don’t get a gold star for being frugal. Being overly frugal simply means you haven’t earned or planned enough. You only get a gold star if you’re able to maximize your lifestyle with the money you’ve earned and not die with too much. Don’t let frugality be a crutch or an excuse for not making more.
I regret not spending more in my 20s and 30s. In my 40s and beyond, I’m determined to let the lifestyle I enjoy keep up with inflation and then some. For those who have their finances together, I hope you do the same!

Then I had an epiphany.
Until then, I´ll sit in the middle seat near the toilet for 12 hours because $8,000 / 12 = $667/hour!

After finally finding and remodeling an affordable home in San Francisco with panoramic ocean views, I finally felt I could spend whatever excess cash flow I had on nicer things.
After consistently hitting over 1 million organic pageviews a month for six months in 2017, I felt zero guilt paying $15,800 for a hot tub and $58,000 for a Range Rover because it took me eight years of writing three posts a week. To understand how difficult that is, try writing one 1,500 word post a month. Now multiple that effort by 10. Staying consistent for this long is not easy.
It’s when you buy things with money you don’t deserve (trust fund, inheritance, lottery, using a credit card, your spouse’s income, etc) that your conscious may start making you feel terrible about your spending.
For those who have your finances together, I hope you do the same!
