Shaw and Swire arrived at the bar in high spirits - after all, the Feline was getting free stuff, and the Zalak was on an actual for real date with someone she’s crushed on for some time now. This was gonna be a good night, guaranteed.

The bartender smiled as he saw his pint-sized regular climb onto a barstool. “Evenin’, Shaw. Who’s the lucky lady with you?”

“She’smyLungmenboss,” she replied, blushing like crazy.

“At work, maybe,” Swire added, which only made the Zalak redder. “Tonight, I’m her date.”

He whistled as he handed her a menu. “Well, well, well, I was wond’ring when our fire-spitting firefighter would get what she deserved. The usual, I’m guessing?”

“Yesplease,” the firefighter managed, her voice firmly in a squeak register.

“Still nervous?” The Feline patted her shoulder. “You don’t have to worry about making a good impression, Shaw; I know you’re awesome already.”

If this kept going, she’d become the very thing she swore to destroy. “Th-th-thanksSwireI reallyappreciateit butitsnotjustabout makingagoodimpression...”

“Oh? Is this a test for me as well?”

“Mmmmm.” Swire’s hand had settled on her shoulder after the patting, so she could tell the Zalak was virtually vibrating at this point. “Iwantedtoshowyou whoIamofftheclock.”

The Feline chuckled. “I see. Well, I’m sure I’ll like what I see. Hey, barman? I’ll take a Lupus Winter Coat when you get the chance.”

“Coming right up, little lady. Oh, and tell Shaw the mike’s hers whenever she wants it.”

“The mike?” She looked at her date curiously. “You do karaoke?”

Shaw nodded. “Ido.”

“What do you sing?”

“...IwouldntsayIsing.” The Zalak turned to her, and Swire saw something she’d never seen before: a fire (ironically) in her eyes. “I rap.”

Now Shaw had her full attention. “What’s your favorite song to perform?”

“Iusuallyfreestyle.”

“Seriously?” The Feline looked past her to the microphone. “Are you gonna perform tonight?”

The Zalak nodded. “ThatswhyIwanted totakeyouhere.”

“Oooh, I’m looking forward to this.” At that point, the bartender brought them both their free first drink, and the night began in earnest.

After building some hype and putting two of her “usuals” in her system (to help loosen her up), Shaw led Swire to a spot near the stage before grabbing the mike. “Backingtrack3,” she said, which got several of the other patrons’ attention; normally she went in order, using 1 to warm up and steadily getting faster. Starting at 3 meant she was showing off, and that promised to be good.

“Goodeveningeveryone howseveryonedoingtonight?” Cheers from the crowd. “Sincetonightis couplesnightI wantedtodo somethingspecial socanIget someloveformy datethisevening?” More cheering as the Zalak pointed out where Swire was sitting, leaving the Feline stunned and blushing wildly.

“Nowwithallthatsaid,” she continued, “Illstartwitha bitofLungmen materialtowarmup onsoifyouhear whatsoundslikegibberish askthefolksyouknow speakittotranslate letsgo!”

And with that final declaration, Shaw was off. Swire wasn’t sure if the Zalak knew this about the budget-keeper, but she loved the Lungmen rap scene - partially because it was local, mostly because the sound was like nothing else in music - and she fancied herself at least a little pickier than most. However, if she’d been told the firefighter on-stage, performing almost entirely for her specifically, made her living spitting fire instead of extinguishing them, she’d’ve believed them, no questions asked. As the tempo ramped up, Shaw only seemed more and more comfortable, going as far as a ninth backing track roughly three times as fast as the one she’d started on and showing no signs of slowing down. By the end of her block, the Zalak had whipped the crowd into a bit of a frenzy, and in the process, she’d left the Feline feeling very hot under the collar.

Shaw rejoined Swire at the table she’d left her at, sweating noticeably from the effort of all that high-speed improv. “Whatdidyouthink?”

“I...I fucking loved it.” The Feline, while watching the performance, had ordered two more Winter Coats and taken her time with both, but that wasn’t why her face was so flushed. “How did you do that on the spot? I mean, your flow was perfect, you kept up with those insane backing tracks, and your lyrics were amazing...You got one more song in the tank?”

“Icandoonemore.” As the Zalak got up, Swire did as well, racing over to the DJ to make her request.

Once they were both on-stage, they called out, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got one more treat for you tonight from Squirrel-Girl herself: a duet with the Kash Kat herself, Swire!”

“KashKat?” The firefighter glanced at her date. “Youhaveastagename?”

“I do now! You know the song?” She asked as the instrumental began to play.

Shaw did - it was one of her favorites, actually. “ShouldIdothe sameversesas theydidor canImakeit myown?”

“Whatever you’re comfortable with, sweetie.” The Feline kissed her cheek, which got several whistles and cheers from the other bargoers.

“...BecarefulSwire Idontwantyou togetburned whileyoureuphere.”

She laughed. “I can take some heat, don’t you worry...DJ, loop it back, we’re ready!”
