What Causes Fingernail Infections?
Tumblr media
Fingernail infections and toenail infections are caused by tiny, microscopic organisms called fungi (singular: fungus).
Although there are a variety of disorders that can affect the nails, more than half of all fingernail infections and toenail infections are caused by fungi, which are the most prevalent nail pathogens.
According to Medical News Today, “Around 10 percent of the adult population suffers from nail fungus infection.” What that means is that it affects 1 in every 10 people. That number jumps to 1 in 2 (50%) for people older than 70.
The medical word for a fungus infection of the nails is onychomycosis.

Why do fingernail infections happen?
Fungi live naturally on your skin. They don’t cause any problems on your skin until they proliferate beyond normal. When that happens, they can begin to infect your skin.
Fingernail infections happen when fungi find a small cut or crack in the skin surrounding your nail.
The under part of your nails gives fungi a warm, moist place to grow. From there, they can spread to other nails and the skin, once they have the opportunity.
Hence, a more frequent way to have a toenail infection, for instance, is by always wearing sweaty socks and shoes for long hours.
Men should especially remember that they sweat in their socks and shoes, if they wear them for long hours or perform tedious tasks on them.
That usually leaves the toes more confined to shoes, where they’re in a warm, moist environment. This explains why fungal infections affect toenails more commonly than fingernails.
