What's more interesting is the fact that the cog rolling on the ground in the second gif appears in the beginning and the end of s2 ep 6. Viktor saw that cog rolling around on the ground when he was watching Salo bleed out in IMAX 3d. There's some really subtle facial expressions on Viktor's end along with some very pointed reiteration of dialogue too.

Viktor knew Jayce was gonna molly whop him. He foreshadowed it for himself.

I'm still reading Afropessimism so it's time for me to make my media studies degree do some exercise with my favorite boy

and someday I will write that proper Silco essay on why his politics make me sad lol but for now I will just say I stopped trusting that man when the word nation came out of his mouth

the whole idea of a nation state (as opposed to other governmental/social arrangements that precede it) is that the political entity of the state is something individuals who are citizens of the state are supposed to identify with. the nation state is supposed to represent them and protect them in some manner. typically, this is established by means of trampling on someone else who lives within state borders but doesn't (at the time of the state's formation) fit into the community of the state. (for more, there's this really good interview with Mahmood Mamdani where he articulates this and connects it to the current situation in Palestine)

for Mamdani, the idea of the nation state crystalizes with Spain's reconquista, which created an Iberian state that trampled over Jewish and Muslim people. from there, the idea that people's homelands might not take the form of states becomes foreclosed as the model of the nation state expands and subsumes every other political formation out there

and this (told y'all I was gonna put that degree to work) is what happens in the show. Silco, working on his nationalist project, envisions a future in which the people of his homeland have a political entity to represent them. but in the course of establishing it, he tramples over resistance to his very sketchy means of accomplishing this goal

what I want to think about more is how not to close out potential alternatives. I think the character who presents the best place to start with that from is Ekko (my boy). Ekko and the Firelights' political motives beyond 1) stop the expansion of shimmer 2) care for addicts and 3) beat up cops is left pretty unclear. I think the reason he sometimes get looked over is this lack of clarity, a lack of coherence, and that gives the feeling of not being able to judge him. while Silco's methods are bad, his narrative arc makes sense. his solution also makes sense. but is making sense the end-all-be-all of liberatory possibility? especially when one is up against violence that is senseless itself and in its gratuity?

here's where Afropessimism is so interesting to me. the theory is about anti-blackness and argues that humanity is able to define itself against blackness as a metaphorical ruler (I have some historical examples that are interesting, but then we'd be here all day; if you're really interested go dive into Matthew Perry and Japan). because this antagonism is pre-logical, it doesn't make sense. it challenges the very idea that suffering and redress for that suffering can be made sense of. the solution to it isn't in sight. but the challenge is to sit with that. it is to know that the answer doesn't have to be right in front of you for the fight to still be worth it.

a big part of why I don't vibe with the whole concept of nation states is that I've always been like "why am I supposed to identify with the country that enslaved a bunch of my ancestors? like what good does that do me?" and I frankly have decided that it does me no good to do that. as a descendant of enslaved people, I also have no nation to go back to and join. what do I wanna do instead? don't know. the longer and longer I live, the idea that I have to feels like an unfair imposition. I've read multiple commentaries that read the Firelights as anarchists. anarchists get asked that same question a lot.

what do we do with a form of redress that doesn't make narrative sense? what kind of restoration could be meaningfully taken out of the situation in the show? in a way, it's interesting, because the show has source material that's very public. we know, ultimately, no matter what questions characters like Ekko pose the idea of Zaun as a nation, that's what happens anyway. it's like a psychic wall of impossibility prevents anything else. it has to become a nation because in a world of nations there is no other choice. so I don't fault Silco for thinking it would be a good idea. I wish he had more of an imagination, though.

THINGS I LOVED ABOUT ARCANE S2

Featuring art, writing, and music analysis for my fellow scholars lol

Spoilers ahead!

The Bridge leitmotif (not sure what else to call it) popped up a LOT in the OST this season! (I'm referring to the little tune baby Powder sings in the first scene of the show.) I think it's Jinx's (or maybe Powder's?) theme. Notable places where the leitmotif appears is when the others touch Jinx's shoulders in solidarity during the prison break. Also it shows up in the song "The Beast" that same episode, when Warwick attacks for the first time. The leitmotif's meaning seems to shift over time. It starts out as a theme song for Zaun's people, and then becomes inherently tied to Jinx after she becomes a symbol for Zaun's freedom.

Every friggin frame of this show is absolutely gorgeous. It never ceases to depict the beauty in even the ugliest parts of the world.

Dat theme song intro tho! Every character highlight told an interesting story, especially Jinx's flag thing and Caitlyn's Macbeth reference.

Sevika. Just, everything with Sevika. Her fight with Smeech. The dramatic cape fling-off to parallel season 1. (All the women in Arcane are WAY too hot for their own good 🫡🥴)

Vi's pitfighter scenes were super fun to watch (Cocktail Molotov is my favorite song from this season). Not super fun for Vi to experience, tho. Sorry girl!

Literally every part of act 2 (in regards to the Jinx/Vi family dynamic). The fantastic action scene involving Warwick in the prison. Jinx being the one to figure out he's Vander. The catfight between sisters in the mines ("oversized b****-mittens"). The "He's your dad too," and letting Jinx break down and hug her dad 🥹 Their little family has changed a lot, but for a short time, they were together again.

Isha's sacrifice 😭😭😭 It's a good thing none of my roommates were home when I watched this because I got punched in the face by my own tears. (idk how I actually thought she was gonna make it. -_-) Not sure how I feel about Isha dying as a writing choice, but they gave her a great sendoff. Specifically the shot where she looks Jinx in the eye and does their signature finger guns. You can see the tears in Isha's eyes. How hard this is for her to give up her happy life with Jinx. But she'll do it with a watery smile, because that's what Jinx would so for her.

"[That self-serving war pig] oinked poison in your ear" is a genuinely funny insult that still manages to pack a punch.

I really loved getting to see Ekko this season. Especially during the trip to the alternate reality. That whole episode was so good. He's such a good boi and I want to protect him.

Alternate Universe Powder has a pink streak in her hair for Vi.

Ekko puts on a couple pink and blue hair ties into his hair after that episode.

Jayce and Viktor are confirmed to be in a Queerplatonic Relationship (at least in my mind) 🧡💛🤍🩵💙 Y'all better not come after me for this one lol. I never saw them as having sexual or even romantic feelings for each other. Jayce even calls Viktor his brother at one point. Viktor doesn't seem to express any romantic tendencies, so I've always headcanoned him as Aro/Ace. Anyway, I think it was a great choice to have the two of them transcend the labels of relationships and express pure love for each other. It felt very Queerplatonic to me, which made me happy.

Speaking of which, the scenes where Viktor is in that space void is absolutely GORGEOUS. I could stare at those colors forever.

Uhhhhh we're actually NOT going to put the finale on the list of things I liked. I was worried Arcane wasn't quite going to stick the landing at the end...I might've been right to fear that. Some characters (Like Jayce, Viktor, Heimerdinger, and arguably Jinx) got a good sendoff. (I definitely believe Jinx isn't dead, just off redefining herself apart from others.) Other characters...not so much. Mel, Vi, and Ekko lost every part of their families, and are left with basically nothing to show for it. They all just seem really lonely by the end. I mean, Vi has Cait and I assume Vi and Ekko still talk. But I can't shake the feeling that they didn't get a true catharsis. I think the successor show to Arcane will explore Noxus (and therefore Mel) more, so I think there's still hope for her, at least.

And finally, you guys. It lights my world to see people analyze this fantastic show and point out details I missed. And y'all making the fanart are amazing! Shows like this inspire artists to play with their style and find beauty in chaos.

Arcane, Season 1, Episode 7, "The Boy Savior," First Impressions!

All hail the king.

While every episode does advance every plot, there is always that one character that seems to be the star of the week, usually the one that gets the flashback lead-in before the intro. Last week was Viktor's.

And this week was unquestionably Ekko's.

And my dude gets a whole-ass music video!

Out of all the canon characters, Ekko has been one of the most absent, with only singed making fewer appearances. But that doesn't mean that he's been idle. As predicted, he's the Firelight leader, and has basically picked up Vander's mantle in fighting to protect the innocents of Zaun, though with Silco moving into the Lanes that's been more difficult, forcing him to create a hidden community for former Shimmer addicts and other victims.

And, uh, it fucking rocks. Seriously. That little subterranean tree community was visually gorgeous.

But while he's overjoyed to see Vi again, he's not so trusting of Cait, and with good reason. And Cait is forcibly getting a lesson in class disparity, though the two do thankfully come to an understanding.

I like Ekko as a leader. He's clearly seen some major shit, and had to grow hard to survive. He takes no shit, does not cower, but is also responsible and willing to listen to reason. He has his reasons for being distrustful and antagonistic, but will also work with those he despises if it'll help his people.

On the topside, Jayce the golden boy is starting to feel the pressure. He hates what he did to Heimerdinger, he doesn't like what his new position is doing to him, and during his confrontation with Viktor on the bridge, we see that he's not so pure after all, for as well-meaning as he is, he still harbors some prejudice toward those from the Undercity, which Viktor calls him out on. The dude's trying, but he is ultimately out of his depth, and now Heimerdinger is up to something.

As for Viktor, dude made a dark choice. He's been driven by desperation, and now he's turning to the darker side of fantasy science to save himself, using Shimmer to try to withstand whatever the hexcore will do to him. I don't know if he's corrupting it with whatever impurities are swimming around in him or it's corrupting him by just being naturally bad, but either way, he's had his Anakin Skywalker moment. Now, will he be fully corrupted, or will it take some time, and he'll seem fine for a bit before the darkness really takes hold?

Okay, so let's get to the bridge, the same where Violet and Powder lost their parents, and now Jinx loses everything else.

Well, for one, there's Marcus. Oh, Marcus. I really thought that your conscience would get the better of you eventually, and you'd do the right thing for once in your life, but I guess not everyone gets redemption.

I still think his kid might turn out to be one of the child champions.

Next, we get Jinx letting her delusions convince her that Vi has chosen Cait over her. Which, to be fair, is...kinda sorta true, but not in the way she's thinking, as Vi still wants to save her. But that's not something that's going to get through that rattled brain of hers anytime soon.

And finally...

Okay. I know y'all been waiting for me to talk about it, and now I've finally seen it. Let's talk about Ekko vs. Jinx.

Now, I try to avoid spoilers, but I had still heard a lot of hype over this fight, and I was curious to see if it would live up to that hype.

It did.

Ooooh boy, did it ever.

First, let's just take a moment to shout out the animation. Arcane's animation direction is pretty stellar most of the time anyway, but this was on a whole other level. Like, it was like something out of Into the Spider-Verse!

Second, there's Jinx's little line upon seeing Ekko. "Look who it is! The boy savior!" There is so much packed into that line, as it shows that Jinx knew that Ekko was the Firelight leader all along, that the two of them have been feuding for a long time, that they were probably pretty intense rivals.

But you know what? Despite thinking that she's a lost cause, despite no doubt resenting her for all of his friends that she's killed, Ekko still, in his own way, cares for her. I mean, they were pretty close friends as kids, and no doubt he pities her for what happened to her. After all, you do see Powder's face on the mural of the fallen. He still mourns the loss of his friend.

But he's not above weaponizing that history between them.

Look at her reaction when he starts swinging the pocketwatch, the same signal to begin the game they played as kids. Look at their demeanor. They're playful with each other, almost flirtatious. He's asking her to play one last time.

And Jinx being Jinx, she accepts.

And that is her undoing.

See, Ekko is a very smart guy, and he knows her fighting style inside and out. And he uses his memory of what she did during that childhood game coupled with his knowledge of her shooting habits to basically maneuver her into recreating that game, and in an absolutely brilliant call-forward to the rewind powers he will one day possess, he then outsmarts her and takes her down in a matter of seconds.

But that proves to be his undoing as well, as he stops right before ending her. Because while he was fully prepared to kill Jinx, he was not prepared to kill Powder.

I don't really think Jinx setting off that bomb was a malicious, "If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me!" moment. I think she recognized that he couldn't finish it, and I think that she was hoping that he would. So she decided to do it herself, just to make the hurting stop.

So are they dead? No, dummy, of course not. They're game characters. But it will be interesting to see how they survived. Did Ekko choose to save her at the last moment, or did something else intervene? Guess I'll find out soon.

EXACTLY, she's one of my favorite characters on the show and had the potential to have this kind of arc. And like, I like the secret magic stuff too but it was rushed (and I honestly preferred the theories of her being revived/blessed in the womb vs just being born with magic from a mystery magical parent). I definitely think dealing with racism in fandom made it harder to talk about Mel's actual flaws when everyone else was tryna make her evil incarnate for just existing while black and in the way of a white mlm ship (I know Jayce is latino coded but you can be white and latino like his voice actor and idk if the showrunners wanted him to be perceived as explicitly brown or not given the ways the west is about viewing lation as a race and the ways fandom treats him is a mix of both white when he's in a mlm ship and they wanna dunk on Mel and brown when they're mad at him, at least that's what i think)
