“Thank you so much! I love you all and I can’t wait to see you soon.” you shout into your microphone. You turn to exit the stage, but as you take your last few steps to leave the audience's sight, you twist your torso to look back at them and send them a cheeky little wink, served with a smirk, sending them into a flurry.

Little do they know, you had already finished your next album, and that it would be released in just a few months. You were especially excited for this album. It was the one you were most proud of, and there was a song or two on it that you had written for someone special to you.

As soon as you’re off stage, you’re running around like a loose hen. You’re taking off your in-ears and giving your microphone to a crew member, then rushing off to your makeshift changing room and taking off your costume before slipping into some sweats.

You were on your way to Austin, Texas to celebrate the birthday of your best friend, Charlie. It has been a few years since you’ve been able to see him, both your schedules keeping you booked and bust, there just hasn’t been a good time. But his birthday is coming up, so you decided to surprise him and spend his birthday week with him. You also had a surprise or two for him, should things go right.

Charles and yourself have been best friends since childhood, always spending so much time together as your families were close. Growing up, the two of you never really had any conflicts, besides the occasional argument over whose turn it was to play on the playstation.

But over time, you’ve started to fall for him. Even though you rarely saw each other, you would always make time to text or call the other. And every year on your birthdays, you would facetime each other as you blew out the candles on your cakes. It became a cute little tradition the two of you started when you turned 17, Charles was off racing in some far off country while you stayed back to finish your studies. When you were about to blow out the candles on your cake, your phone rang. When you looked at the screen, Charles' name was listed at the top. During that call, Charles told you “I’ll still be there. Even if I have to watch you through a screen, I still want to share this special moment with you. I want to see the reflection of the candles lighting up your eyes. I want to sing happy birthday to you, just as if we were together in person. I wouldn’t miss it for the world and maybe I should really thank technology for allowing me to feel you close to me, even when you are miles away.”

You guess all those small things, little moments that the two of you shared, lead to where you stand now. On a plane to Austin, Texas to watch 20 cars drive in circles… and hopefully confess your feelings but who knows.

We sold out every show of the tour and had so much fun seeing you all. Thank you to the band and the crew who helped put the show together and make it work every night. You landed in Austin the morning of Charles' birthday and you knew he was going to be busy for a majority of the day with stuff for the upcoming race, so you were going to take that time to unwind and get ready for his birthday dinner tonight.

Throughout the day, you receive updates from Pierre and Carlos. Charles had a bit of a tough morning due to a work meeting but since then, he’s calmed down and he’s smiling more.

You spend most of the day sending out some emails before getting ready for Charles' birthday dinner. You had bought the most beautiful red dress that hugged your figure perfectly. You didn’t feel like doing much with your hair so you just blow dried it after your shower and gave yourself a bit of extra volume. Keeping the makeup lowkey, you slipped your shoes on and grabbed your bag before heading out the door, ready to surprise your best friend.

Your uber is pulling up to the building where the party is being held so you shoot a text to Pierre, letting him know you were outside. Pierre told you he’d meet you outside and bring you in when Charles was distracted.

As you get out of the car, Pierre is already there, holding his hand out to help you stand. The two of you hug and exchange kisses on the cheeks as Pierre compliments you,

“You look amazing, y/n. Kika is very excited to see you and Charles is dying for a message from you. He’s been pouting all day cause you won’t text him back.”

“Oh dear,” you wince, “Hopefully he hasn’t been too bad? I just didn’t want to give away that I’m here.”

“He’ll be alright.” Pierre reassures you.

The two of you walk side by side to the room where Charles is, Pierre telling you to stand right outside the door to make sure Charles would see you when you walked in. You overhear as Pierre tries to get Charles' attention, “Charles, we’ve got a big surprise for you.”

“Quoi? Please don’t be something outrageous, I told you I wanted a simple dinner.”

“Oh, don’t worry. It’ll be worth it.”

You listen as feet shuffle and chairs are scrapped against the wooden floors.

“Come on in.” Pierre shouts, then all that can be heard are the clicks of your heels on the floors. Slow and hesitant, afraid of how Charles will react. You hope he’ll be happy, and that this is something he wants.

As soon as you lock eyes with Charles, he’s running across the room to you, running into a chair and table, almost knocking them down in his trek to you. In the blink of an eye, you’re wrapped in his arms, breathing in his cologne that you know all too well. Quickly, you wrap your arms around him, holding him close and whispering in his ear, “Happy Birthday, Charlie”.

He doesn’t say anything for a good moment, just holding you in his arms, as if he’s afraid of letting go. Afraid that this would turn into a nightmare where he would lose you. He breathes you in, smiling as he recognizes your perfume. The perfume being the one you wore when he won his first GP in F1, remembering it because it was his favorite smell on you.

If it weren’t for the crowd watching the two of you, Charles would’ve held onto you for much longer. If he could say half the things he wanted to, he’d have you. He had been holding back this feeling and he wanted to say some things to you. Maybe today he would.

The two of you let go of the other, Charles blushing as he realized everyone had been staring and wanted to ask questions. But it was his birthday so they restrained themselves.

“So, let's get this party started.” Pierre announced, clapping his hands to get everyone’s attention. Charles shoots a look at Pierre to thank the man for reverting the attention elsewhere. When everyone went back to the celebrations, Charles turned his attention back to you to ask, “How are you here? You were just in Tokyo yesterday.”.

“I finished the show and immediately flew here so I could surprise you. It’s been too long.” you beamed at him. He was truly grateful to have you here.

“How long are you here for?” Charles asks, leading you outside to the patio so the two of you can have a private conversation.

“I’m free for the next month. After that I have to get back to work and promote stuff.”

“Ah! So you’ll make it to a race or two?” he asks hopefully.

“Yes, I’m definitely going to COTA and Mexico but I’m not sure about Brazil yet.”

“I’m glad. I’ve missed you, mon ange.”

“I’ve missed you too, Charlie.”, you say, holding his hand in yours, “I have a gift for you by the way.”

Charles' disappointment was written all over his face when you removed your hand from his, so that you could open something on your phone. “Quoi?” Charles asks, intrigued now that he sees you messing with your phone.

You turn your phone screen to him and his jaw drops. Firstly because he was looking at the design for your next album, he swore he’d never seen something so beautiful. The cover was a photo of you, bathed in golden sunlight, letting your natural curls fall down your back. Your curls weren’t something you often wore, as they were too high maintenance and you liked other hairstyles on yourself better.

“The ring,” Charles mentions, squinting and zooming in on the photo, “Is that?-”

“It’s the one you got me.” you smile. Truth be told, this entire was practically for him. Sure there were some songs that aren’t about him, but he was your main muse for it.

“Wow, this is beautiful. I can’t wait to hear the songs. I get to hear them first, right?” he asks, shooting a cheeky grin your way.

“Obviously, you’re always the first to listen to my songs. But this one, you get to listen to know. It’s part of your surprise.” you say, taking your phone back for a second to swipe on the screen, revealing the tracklist.

You watch Charles’ eyes roam the screen, reading every track name until he comes across the last one.

“Non,” he looks up at you, “Is- Is it for me? The last one. It’s got my name.”

“Oui, mon ami. Actually, a few of the tracks are for you or about you.” you confess, afraid of how he may react. He hasn’t even listened to the songs yet. What if he hates them? What if he thinks they're weird. This could ruin your entire relationship with Charles.

But he’s smiling a lot.

“Can I listen to them? Now?” he asks, excitement dancing though his body.

“The whole album or just your songs?”

“The whole album. I want to get the whole experience.” he says, moving his body rhythmically to really emphasize how serious he is.

“Charlie, there’s a party in there for you. Everyone is here to see you. You can listen to it later. Go party for now.” you try to encourage him, not wanting to steal him away from everyone.

“Non,” he says, stomping his foot on the ground as if he’s physically standing on business, “I want to listen to it now. Let everyone inside mingle and talk about how great I am. I wanna be out here with you.”

You could feel your face heat up, painting your cheeks red.

“Non, Charlie. I can’t let you stay out here for that long. But I think one song should be okay.” you smile at him, anxious for his reaction.

“I can work with that. But you have to let me listen to the rest tonight after the party.” he points a finger at you.

You just shake your head and laugh, pulling up the file for ‘Good Luck Charlie’. This song was written about the childhood you two shared, the days when you two were young and innocent and naive. Now everything has changed.

You play the song, allowing Charles to listen as you watch his reaction.

His reactions were quite anxiety inducing. He didn’t express a single emotion the whole time, simply staring out in front of him and just listening. The song ends and he still doesn’t say anything.

“So, what do you think?” you ask timidly.

His voice shakes when he answers, “That was beautiful. I can’t believe I get to have a song so amazing for me.” he looks at you, tears threatening to spill from his eyes.

“Thank you. It’s something I had been wanting to do for a while and I thought now would be a good time. The album will be coming out in a few months then I’ll be touring again. And I’m really excited this time around cause I get to sing this song live, finally. And I’m hoping you’ll make it to a show or two so I can serenade you like the good friend I am.” you laugh.

Friend.

“Why do you look sad, Charlie?” you ask.

It’s now or never, Charles thought. He either tells you his feelings for you right now, or he keeps them hiding away. He didn’t want to just be your friend, he wanted to kiss your neck and tell you everything he thinks and feels. He wants to share more moments with you.

“I, um…” he breathes in, trying to gain composure, “I have something I need to tell you.”

“Okay, what’s going on?” concern lacing your face.

“I love you, y/n. Like, I’m in love with you. When I look at you, I see this light that only you have. Your laugh is the best sound I’ve ever heard. Every time you smile, I smile. You’re everything I’ve ever wanted and I can’t bear to be away from you for more than a year anymore. I don’t ever want to go months or weeks or even days without you. Say you want to be with me too. S’il te plait, mon coeur.”

He’s holding both of your hands in his now, holding on tight and begging you to say yes.

“Charlie, thank fuck.” you laugh, “I wanted to tell you I’m in love with you. You’ve ruined my surprise.”

“Wait, really?” He laughs now too.

The two of you can’t hold back your laughs now, finding it insane that you shared the same plans of confessing to each other today. Not only that, but that you had waited so long to tell each other. How much time was wasted out of fear?

After catching your breaths, Charles comes back to bring his hand to hold the side of your face, using his other hand to wrap around your waist, pulling you close to him. You wrap your arms around him, watching him and admiring the freckles on his face. Many people don’t see them, but if you look close enough, it’s easy to spot them, especially in the sun.

“Can I kiss you now?” Charles asks, rubbing his thumb against your cheek softly.

“Yeah, you can.”

In the twinkling of an eye, Charles connects his lips with yours in a gentle kiss. His lips feel soft and warm, like caramel on a summer day. He takes his time with it, not feeling the need to rush. You two stay like that for some time, not wanting to part just yet, but you do.

Charles doesn’t pull far away from you, just enough so you can breathe again. He’s frowning again, leading you once again to ask what was wrong.

“I don’t want you to leave again. We both have such crazy schedules and I can’t do this without you anymore.”

“Well, we don’t have to worry about that, gorgeous.”

“Quoi?”

“So, about my next tour…. The tour dates and locations align with the F1 calendar for next year. So we’ll be okay.”

He’s practically beaming with joy when you say this.

“Really? We’ll get to be together?”

“Oui, mon ange. Nothing's gonna keep us apart now.”

“Be my girlfriend.” He just spits out.

“Charlie, what?”

“Be my girlfriend? Please?”

“Not even 2 minutes after our first kiss and you’re already skipping steps. Can’t believe it.” You joke.

“Okay, well. I think we’re allowed to skip a few. Plus, I want to take you on a proper date tonight. After the party we can go to the park and get some ice cream? I can properly ask you to be my girlfriend then.” “There’s nowhere I’d rather be.”

Sick and tired.- Allan x reader

First time writing for smiling friends so I do hope I get him as accurate as possible. (I love Allan)

Gender neutral reader btw.

Warnings: cursing,throwing up, established relationship,small itty bitty mention of weed Allan might be OOC

Walking through the store you and your boyfriend Allan had been sent on a job to get mr.boss some pens for his office. Your eyes are squinted from the bright light hitting your already pounding head making it even worse.

“I don’t know why he couldn’t get it himself”. Allan’s voice reached your ears as it seemed to make you even more overstimulated then wanted. “Yea, I really don’t know either.” You respond tiredly hoping he wouldn’t catch on to the fact of you obviously not feeling well. Grabbing the box of pens you walk beside the critter to the check out only for a worker to accidentally bump into Allan.

“Watch where you-oh.” The workers voice changes from defensive to distaste upon seeing Allan, it’s a somewhat blue critter with 6 arms. “God damnit what do you want?” He asks Allan watching the red critter cross his arms and glare at him. “I’m just going to the register”. He answers whilst fixing his blue neck tie and rolling his eyes. Looking down away from the two critters you feel nauseous wanting to just go home and go to sleep. “Allan can we just go?” Your voice snaps Allan out of his snarky comments with Armzo. Nodding he silently walks with you to the register.

Now that the precious pens have been purchased you and Allan walk to the parking lot to the company’s car. “Your pale, are you feeling ok?” Allan’s voice asks as you lean against the car taking a breath as the heat of the warm day beats on you making your stomach turn. “Yea Allan I’m o-“ you can’t even finish your sentence before you hunch over and puke on the parking lot pavement.

Allan quickly pulls your hair (if you have any) back while you puke a concerned look on his face. When you’re done he gets in the car and turns on the AC to cool you off as he feels the car move when you plop down and take a deep breath. “L-let’s just get these back to mr. Boss and go home.” You say cutting the silence while you closing your eyes.

After getting the pens to mr. Boss you are currently at Allan’s apartment on his couch with a blanket over you as Allan talks to the landlord the landlord asking if he wants to smoke weed and drink diet soda while playing burn out revenge on the PlayStation 2. Declining Allan shuts the door and walks over to you as he moves your legs over his lap. Usually he’s not the type for too much physical contact but since it’s you he’s not too bothered.

“Do you need anything?” He questions while changing the tv channel to something at least the tiniest bit interesting. Switching through the channels as he lands on a cheese channel, as odd as it may be you know he’s not changing channels for a while. “No I’m alright”. You respond your voice now nasally just like your boyfriends. It kinda causes a little laugh from him. “You sound like me”. He mentions earning a small smile from you.

Patting your leg with his long slender hands he sits back and watches the tv with you, not noticing your eyes getting heavy from the sickness and the tiring day you’ve had already. Upon seeing you doze off Allan reaches down and quickly pecks your forehead. “Get some sleep.”

Im sorry this sucks I hope to try to get better at writing him also I’m literally half asleep while writing this and South Park is playing on the tv and if I don’t post this ill forget about it.

Some commentary:

1. Dragons in WOF are often described as moving around while holding objects like spears and scrolls. This usually looks weird to me in the graphic novels, where they mostly end up doing a strange three-legged walk that I imagine would get tiring after a while. There's also a part in The Lost Heir where Anemone apparently walks around with a lance jammed in her armpit... foreleg-pit... whatever. My headcanon is that this three-legged walk doesn't really happen, and instead the way to walk while holding something is to either hold it with your wing, or (as shown here) walk with your wings and hold it with your forefeet. I think this idea might sound weird and therefore not occur to people because they think that the wing is so thin that it must be too flimsy to walk on, but I feel that if it's strong enough to carry a dragon in flight it must be strong enough for this. Maybe. It makes sense to me anyway.

2. Originally this was sort of inspired by the pose at 0:34 in this video (cw for violence). I wasn't really satisfied with how my attempt looked so I changed the head to be doing something else. I still like that pose though and I might try it again.

3. This was inspired by Spyro sleeping on the deck chair in the remake of Spyro 2. I don't know if they have deck chairs in Pyrrhia. My friend told me the chair is about to get impaled and i guess he's correct. Maybe it's made of a very thick fabric.

4. This is how dragons T-pose.

5. What do dragons do with their legs in flight? This question bedevils me. When I was creating my Minecraft skin (this) I changed how the legs are posed during the flight animation several times, and I'm still not sure it really looks right.

6. Before I got into WOF I mostly only drew anthro characters, so something I want to understand better is how to draw a character standing on two legs without making it look like they have a human skeleton. My headcanon is that dragons can learn to stand and even walk like this, but most don't. You can tell an expert from an amateur because an expert will stand all the way up onto their toes, whereas an amateur will keep their heels on the ground. I think the main students of this technique are circus performers. If you do this in public you will be stared at. The only tribe where a lot of dragons can do it is Rainwings, because they think it's funny. The only major non-Rainwing character who can do it is Qibli.

7. Standing on your forelegs isn't really considered harder than standing on your hind legs, but it is considered a more advanced technique because you're much more likely to snap your neck if you fall over.

8. It's really hard for me to draw a tail curling away from the camera like this. I don't exactly understand what I'm doing wrong. The scales look weirdly skewed to me, like a Playstation game where the polygons are touching the edge of the screen. This happens regularly but I haven't figured out what to do about it.

9. Standing on two legs is a lot easier if you brace the other two up against the wall.

10. Wings look silly here. Wings are the hardest part of these sketches to make look naturalistic I think, probably because I conceptualise dragon bodies as like ... a dog with wings, as opposed to a bat with forelegs. Hopefully if I keep doing this I will be able to develop a holistic understanding of the anatomy of a body plan that does not exist. That's my ambition, anyway.

Sorry if these arent as yummy, I just woke up and I’m so eepy. But these are what I could think up <3 This is such a random collection of thoughts but!

- I think Ellie has a red Coca-Cola themed mini fridge in her room where she stores monster energy drinks and her elf bars so they pull cool when she smokes them.

- She has a vision of -2.00 in one eye and -2.50 in the other eye, but hates putting on her glasses because she’s afraid it makes her look nerdier than she already is.

“Ok I got some racing shirts for you, do you want to see?”

Little Daniel’s eyes widened, he loved watching his Dad race. He was the fastest racer ever!

Daniel bounced on the couch while Max took up a little gift bag that was delivered this morning. He opened the bag and brandished the kid sized navy Red Bull polo with a grin, only to bite back his laugh when Little Daniel frowned.

“What’s wrong? I thought you liked blue?” Max looked at the shirt then back to Little Daniel who was nibbling his palm, his brows were furrowed deeply.

“Ish not wed.” Little Daniel mumbled shyly.

“No it’s Red Bull.”

“What’s dat?”

“They’re the fastest racing team.” Max said matter of factly, he fought the urge to point to the trophies Little Daniel had been trying to grab at just this morning.

“Nuh uh.” Little Daniel shook his head, contorting on the couch as only toddlers could.

“What do you mean nuh uh?” Max argued.

“Fewawi are de fashtesh.” Little Daniel was still biting at his hand but Max could hear his smile. He sighed, defeated. He couldn’t believe he just lost an argument with a five year old.

“Fine, I’ll get you a Ferrari shirt if you want.” Max rolled his eyes and reached for his phone when Little Daniel cheered. He texted Charles his request then sighed long suffering when Charles immediately face timed him.

“What is going on? Do I need to call the police? Was that one of those ‘I’ve been kidnapped and the kidnappers told me to react normally so you’re texting a code that I should know that its not you things’?” Charles squinted his eyes and Max could tell he was trying to assess his background.

“No, I haven't been kidnapped. I really do want a ferrari shirt. Kid sized if you can find it.”

“Where am I going to just get a children’s shirt from Max? Do you think I just have ferrari t shirts in children’s sizes in my closet?” Charles furrowed his brow.

“Can’t you like go into the Ferrari store and ask for one? Aren’t you like their predestinato or whatever they call you? Of course that should give you special privileges.” Max argued.

“Privileges that don’t include getting children’s clothes?”

“Charles, look. I need a shirt. Can you get me a shirt?”

“Why are you needing a–”

“No no Daniel! You promised! No climbing buddy!” Max put his phone down to scoop up the child that was giggling away and attempting to climb onto the credenza that held his playstation controller. After this was done, Max promised himself to babyproof his house. He didn’t realize he had so much climbable furniture.

“Ok, that's enough climbing, I thought you promised!” Max put Little Daniel on his hip, watching as the little boy pressed his face into his shoulder, contrite.

“No pinky promise.” Max could hear the grin in his voice, he gasped theatrically.

“You tricked me!” He shook his head and Little Daniel’s laugh and picked up his phone again to a wide eyed Charles.

“Max, why do you have a child… and why does he look like Daniel– is he kidnapped? Do I need to call the police?”

“Charles! Calm down. No, we don't need to involve the police. This is Daniel. Just….small. Daniel, do you wanna say hi to Charles?”

“Poollleeeeeeece” Little Daniel’s mouth widened as he extended the word then he waved at the phone. “Shaaaarrrllllll.”

“Hello mate.” Charles smiled in wonder, “I hear you like Ferrari?”

I Love To Shoot At Trouble

During the Steam Christmas Sale I ended up buying Need for Speed: Most Wanted 2012 because it was like $6 or $7 and I'm in the mood for a new racing game to chew up. EA already gave the game away for free in like 2015, but that meant installing "The EA App". I figured having it on Steam would be more convenient.

You'd think so.

It's not! As part of the first time launch, it installs "The EA App" anyway, which also means it found and uninstalled whatever version of Origin I still had (I wasn't aware I'd ever reinstalled Origin since my HDD crash). As part of this process, it also asked me for my EA password, I misread Firefox's stored password incorrectly, and went through the trouble of resetting my EA account with a new password before linking it to Steam. To my surprise, EA's been sitting on my seven year old cloud save from the few minutes I played of this on Origin in 2017, and asks if I want to import it. Sure, I guess.

So that's ten minutes down the drain before I can even boot up the game. Okay, fine, the game finally launches. Gotta wait while it boots up The EA App each time before it boots into the game, gotta wait for the title screen logo animation, gotta wait for a 10-15 second load screen because even though this game came out in 2012 it's gotta ping some always-online "Autolog" leaderboard whatever. Once it connects, it has to do a slow cinematic pan across your car, telling you what your online rivals have done since the last time you connected, and what kind of equipment you have on your car.

All told, every time you boot up Most Wanted 2012, you're looking at a 30-45 second wait before the game actually hands over control and lets you start driving.

Pull the accelerator and instantly Most Wanted SCREAMS at me:

Fair enough. I'm using a Dualshock 4, and the Playstation 4 did not release until over a full year after this game. Click to the menu it's asking of me and see that the control binding menu is awful -- it's one of those super oldschool ones, like binding keys one by one in Doom 2. I have no idea what these buttons are supposed to be in terms of Xbox equivalents, and I realize that Steam has this thing called "Steam Input" that's supposed to be handling all of this anyway. Steam Input generally makes my Dualshock 4 look like an Xbox controller to most games.

I exit out of Most Wanted, force Steam Input to "on" (I was messing with its settings recently, so I thought maybe it was disabled), and relaunch the game again. Wait for the EA App to boot up, gotta wait through the title screen logos, gotta wait 10-15 seconds on a loading screen, gotta wait another 5-10 on the cinematic pan across my car. I have now spent a minute and a half total waiting for this game to boot while I troubleshoot this.

Pull the accelerator. Instead of it complaining about my controller, straight up nothing happens. That's weird. The Start button works, the analog stick seems to work in the pause menu, but the triggers do not. The face buttons also do nothing. Upon checking the settings, that's because Most Wanted has settled on keyboard mode, even though it's clearly accepting some controller input. After poking at it, it does not seem like there's any way to get it to see my controller.

This makes Most Wanted a special game, because a lot of games I play will happily accept that Steam Input is telling it I have an Xbox controller connected even when I absolutely do not. But this is the rare 1% that seems to be incompatible. It's time to bring in the big guns.

Mayflash makes a terrific little passthrough device called the Magic NS, and the general purpose of this device is that it lets you use any controller on any other platform. An Xbox controller on a Playstation? No sweat. A Playstation controller on the Switch? It'll handle it. If you upgrade to the Magic NS2, you even get full gyro support. Every NS device also doubles as a Bluetooth dongle, so you can stay wireless if that's your thing. I love it so much I bought two, because generally they're only about $20.

A Magic NS2 for my Switch... and Magic NS1 for my PC. Strictly for scenarios like this, where a game expects an Xbox controller and Steam Input fails its camouflage.

Plug the NS1 in, connect my Dualshock 4, and once again boot up Most Wanted and wait the 45 seconds to get through the EA app, logos, loading, and the cinematic pan across my car. More than two full minutes now looking at this junk, and that's not counting the time spent outside of the game troubleshooting this in menus or digging out dongles or whatever.

Pull the accelerator... and my car starts to drive! I can steer! It works! Of course it works. The Magic NS never lets me down. I pull up to the first race event...

Press J and K to start the event.

Those are, uh. Those are keyboard keys. I'm using a controller. The controller is fully functional. You don't need to tell me this in keyboard controls. This isn't going to be one of those games, is it? The kind that still tells you everything in the keyboard shortcuts no matter what?

I drop into the menus again and see Most Wanted is still stuck on Keyboard mode and won't let me switch to anything else, even though I'm clearly using a fully functional controller now. This can't be right. But then I remember: Steam Input is still turned on, and when I forced Steam Input to be on, Most Wanted got stuck in this keyboard mode.

Exit out of the game, tell Steam to turn off Steam Input for this specific game only, and relaunch. Wait through all that crap again. We're up to three minutes just waiting for the game to start, and probably closing in on 20 minutes since I first decided I wanted to try Most Wanted.

Pull the accelerator, it works, drive up to the first event, and...

Pull LT and RT to start the event.

FINALLY. HOLY SHIT.

On the plus side: this game controls a lot better than I remember. It's a decent middleground between Criterion's heavier-feeling Hot Pursuit (2011) and the snappier Burnout Paradise. Though I could do with a lot less full screen flashing or the fact that Autolog alerts hide the minimap for some reason.

Not pictured, but the "always online" nature can also be frustrating if you pause, unpause, and find you have to quickly re-pause again a second time. That second pause will actually incur a loading spinner because it hasn't finished syncing with the server from the first pause, apparently. This game is going on 12 years old.

Anyway. This was a nightmare.

"The EA App" now starts up with Windows and is nagging me to enter the login credentials I already entered last night. I have to go through extra steps to get it to leave me alone and not do this

Hi, I'm Natsumi, and I'm wondering who is even reading this but if you are, welcome to a very long post about how I got into Tears of Themis, how it helped me through such a hard time, and how I ended up falling in love with a certain detective.

I made this post for an event on hoyolab but I’m posting it here too in my trashcan! I already wanted to have a post documenting this online just for myself, even if in the future I cringe while reading it, I can look back and remember the emotions I felt through the year. I also wanted to share it with the world so that maybe people will feel like me, or come to appreciate this character that I love so much as much as I do. (you’re free to reblog btw!)

Warning: This post is mostly about Luke!

It contains spoilers about some Luke cards and some spoilers for his Blossom Chapter. There are small scenes from episodes 2 and 5 of main story as well. Oh, and Artem and Luke 2nd anniversary cards.

Part 1: Introduction

I play Genshin (shocker) and I have some online friends who play it as well, so when Tears of Themis came out globally since it's made by Hoyoverse as well, most people who played genshin went to check it out. I discovered Tears of Themis through those people, and I was recommended the game by my online friends.

What was my response?

“I have no phone storage.” AAHAHAH, yes. I'm not a day one player. I only started during the second anniversary because back when the game came out despite being interested I could not play because I did not have any device that could handle the game. My phone could not handle Genshin's size either, it's not compatible to begin with- I played Genshin on the PlayStation [emoji]

However I did not forget about the game, I was just hoping that somehow one day, a miracle will happen and I will be able to play mobile games like other people LOL but what are the odds of that happening?... Well, a miracle happened 2 years later.

Bonus: I had a little beef at the time with Artem because I kept thinking drawings of him were actually of Jumin who is a very well written character I love like crazy from mystic messenger since 2016 BWAHAHA

Part 2: Contact

So one day I was visiting my aunt's house and met my cousin's acquaintance. I met the guy for like.. only 2 hours and during those hours my cousin told him about how I draw digitally but I have been drawing on an 8 year old phone that stays alive for like 30 mins at a time AHHAHA

The guy was like “That's it, I'm getting you an iPad to draw on.” I laughed, thinking he was joking- but then 2 days later I received TWO iPads, one for me and one for my little sister! W t f. Angels do exist on earth? And I was never able to thank him in person because he's a busy guy who only visited my village and I never saw him again o.o

Can you guess what I started doing when I got it? Download a bunch of games I wanted to try throughout the years but couldn't! Among them was Tears of Themis. My house didn't have the best Internet and had a couple hours of electricity a day so I downloaded it very slowly at my aunt's house.

I remember so clearly about how I sat next to my sister as I was downloading the game, and it started playing the second anniversary promotion video since it was starting during that time. At first I was like “aww, they proposing!” but suddenly things turned spicy and I almost dropped the iPad from my hand HAHA.

I did not know what to expect going into this game because I stayed away from spoilers and videos about it since I knew I wanted to get into it myself one day (I was interested in the main story). It made me sad too to be honest because I wanted to play it but couldn't, so I avoided it for years.

I however, did not expect at all that the game would get THAT spicy LMAO my sister noticed my reaction and she was like “What's up?” And I was like “you cannot see this” though she is older than the game’s age rating AHAHHA

Part 3: The beginning

I was so excited getting into this game! When I started I was incredibly hooked to the main story, and at the time.. hear this.. I had a bias towards Artem because he looked like Jumin AHAHA

I was honestly more interested though in the main story than the boys, because the boys didn't make me feel much at the time- I do not have a “love at first sight” I never had that kind of experience for real life people or fictional people. (Anyone can experience it, and that's valid! It's just for me personally that never happens.)

After knowing characters and learning more about them, that's when sometimes- I fall in love with them as a character, they end up giving me so much happiness just seeing them, they give me comfort.. And they fill up my sketchbooks HAHA is this love romantic? Usually no, that's very rare!

I did not feel much for Artem (turns out the only thing he and Jumin have in common were their looks and being socially awkward, shocker-) but I had a little interest that led to me pulling for his second anniversary card when I started being able to wish. I lost- and got a standard Artem, but then I won and got his card LMAO you can get a lot of wishes starting off. However I was doing the stories of the standard SRs, along with the main story and someone.. someone was warming up a lot to my heart.

Part 4: Falling

The boys were all very interesting and lovely characters! (The NPCs as well!!)

Artem, despite how he comes off at work, is actually just a shy guy who is bad at communication outside of work.

Vyn is actually a very interesting and well written character being very different than the rest of the cast due to his unique upbringing (honestly? His family feels like a cult, bro literally is running from a cult) and you learn more about his own psychology the more you get to know him.

Marius is literally just an artist who wants to chase the life he wants but is hindered by responsibility and his position.

And Luke- Luke stole my heart LOL

First off, he's a detective and I've already confessed online to having a thing for detectives by a drawing- that starting since I was a kid and I watched detective conan🧍‍♀️his introduction chapter.. was very interesting. It was literally the first episode, Rosa clearly knows and cares about this character right off the bat you're like hmm? What was this guy doing for 8 years? Why did he show up now after so long? Almost making him suspicious even. But he and Rosa seemed so close despite it all.

After that Luke had started showing up in the story here and there, a moment that made me go “ohh.. what a cool guy.” Was when after Marius’ case in episode 2, he shows up on a bike like “get in we outta here” and saved her from all the reporters.

His theme plays at this scene.. my heartttt

Revealing he'd been watching her and the case from afar and was literally waiting for her to get out and get her away.

I started reading the standard SRs, the first one I did was “Among the great blue” which honestly I recommend everyone doing again because I bet you all do not remember Luke saying this about Jellyfish

The card made me go *the rock eyebrow raise* GAHAH and at the time I was all innocent, not knowing anything about what Luke was going through, so when Rosa woke up and did not find him sleeping next to her (after she invaded where he's supposed to be sleeping lmao) and Luke was hunched over like “I'm fine I just accidentally swallowed gum lol” I actually believed him 💀 there were signs, but it would fly over a player's head until things are revealed ON THE FIRST FREAKING ACT OF HIS PERSONAL STORY and suddenly everything makes sense. Wow.

When I started personal story, I was just starting it because starting all of them is part of the “Rookie tasks” event you get when you start the game. Only to be punched in the gut immediately.

This is LITERALLY what you’re greeted with when you start his story 💀

I was starting to warm up to this guy and you're telling me.. he's sick and planning to leave us.. omg.

I got to choose one limited SR from the Rookie event, and I thought Luke looked adorable so I picked his card "A star in the palm" and the story.. omg that card, I'm weak. Everyone needs to see it, READ IT!

It’s illegal to be BOTH handsome and adorable smh

After that I started WANTING to do more Luke stories so I did the other standard SRs “Radiant Sunlight”, “Timely Rescue”, “Inner Sanctum”. They were all so good, my favorite being Inner Sanctum for how much it messed with my heart.

Dude is literally falling and he STILL makes sure to protect her.

I- was dying. I started pulling for Luke's anniversary card, starting to regret my choice going for Artem's. But he wouldn't come-

So I went back to main story because that's how you get the most schips, and guess what- I had reached episode 5…

Interlude: Luke Pearce’s Fear

The way episode 5 starts, Luke joins the NXX and Rosa is incredibly surprised seeing him there introducing himself as an agent from the NSB. Meanwhile Luke… is mad.

At first he can't believe Artem would even make her do this but she confirms to him that it was her decision, and then he spills the truth about his identity, and about where he's been the past 8 years. He apologizes, for lying, for planning to leave her again, for everything.

And then this happens.

You guys, this scene made me go straight up insane. You can tell how much he had cared and loved her for all these years, and how his biggest fear is literally the main character getting hurt or something happening to her. I felt so emotional over it, that after this act I started DESPERATELY pulling for his card and I finally- finally got it

Episode 5 BTW is one of my favorites in the main story, it is 3 parts because it's THAT good. It's when people will start seeing what Luke is as a character, what's beneath the surface you see in episode 1. (Also this episode introduced the best character: Hugh Moss AHAHH)

The parallel between Rosa, and Jasmine (the reporter whose case you investigate), was not lost on me. That reporter died trying to expose the truth which is exactly what Rosa has been trying to do. I think the entire chapter literally is showing you why Luke is so scared of her continuing the path she's in.

But you know what's the best part? He's freaking terrified, yet he never forces her to leave. He says this:

People keep saying Luke is a red flag that keeps trying to control Rosa and her actions and I swear my reaction is always “Are you even paying attention?” Luke never forces Rosa, he only shows he's against it, but he always says he will support her whatever decision she makes.

A similar more light-hearted situation is the story of his summer card “Iridescent Heartbeat” where Luke is afraid of Rosa getting hurt or doing things that are too much for her so he doesn't consider doing things such as Bungee jumping or rafting. But Rosa insists that she wants to do it and when she's visibly afraid later, Luke teases her a bit (LOL)

but then holds her close to him and soothes her saying there's nothing to be afraid of cause he's there.

He encourages her to do what she wants! And when she does indeed get hurt because the rope was too tight around her leg, he does NOT put the blame on her, but on himself-

Y'ALL HOW IS THIS GUY CONTROLLING??

(The scene after kinda got on my nerves cause Rosa got “angry” that he’s not his usual “cheerful self” like girl I love you but please- can’t you see how much you getting hurt affects him? She pretends that she’s angrier than she actually is making Luke apologize over and over like 💀 but tbh it was also funny, I don’t like how she handled it but it was funny lol)

When they go rafting Luke lets Rosa take the lead and he will follow her because she wanted to prove to him that he doesn't need to plan everything, however Rosa's plan backfires, things go horribly wrong and she can't figure out how to get the raft to go straight. Luke again, does not reprimand her in any way and only helps her so she can do what she wants. Later on even after they've fallen off the raft and onto the water he immediately holds her and takes her up to the surface so worried like “are you okay???” And despite all that, he says she's right. That she's always right and he will stop trying to plan and go more with the flow.

Luke never tried to control Rosa, he just loves her so much that he does not want to ever see her in pain or sad. He wants her to be the happiest girl in the world.

So who is Luke? Luke is the coolest mf, a guy that always jumps into action to help others with a heart so damn big that his own emotions slowly destroy him. He has felt an astronomical amount of guilt and regret since childhood- and has cared for and loved the main character just as long. The girl who is the reason he was able to keep his sanity, the girl who he always wanted to protect, and the girl who is the reason he is still here today.

I wholeheartedly believe that without Rosa in his life, Luke would've ended up completely different, if still alive at all.

Bonus: I remember people being like, the characters have gemstones that match their color in the proposal ring, so why does Luke have Ruby instead of something like Topaz? This is why.. the ruby in the ring represents Rosa (getting emotional over here omg) and honestly that ring is freaking insane because not only did he design and make it and its box by himself for years.. but a ruby is inside the key that Rosa gave to him.

Remember how Luke when you click on the key in visit says “I wear it like this to have it as close as possible to my heart” now look at the key.. if the Ruby is Rosa, and Luke’s heart is the key, do you see what he conveyed in that ring? Yea, I’m crying too.

Part 5: Obsession

I have a bit of an obsession problem, I've been obsessed with stories, games, or characters and that obsession can last years of my lifetime. And it's understandable, when you're going through terrible things in your life, you get attached to what makes you feel happy and you hold on to that feeling. That's what starts that obsession.

When I got the second anniversary Artem card I did the story immediately and it was.. it was alright. Artem wants to propose, but in his attempt to keep it all secret distances himself too much and gets Rosa worried, but then wow! He proposes with the help of his coworkers and happy ending + things get a bit spicy at the end.

But I felt like.. like I'm getting deja vu AHAHA like I've seen this kind of story a million times before. (Probably cause I did from watching a bunch of kdramas and having consumed a bunch of stories from a lot of media) It did not exactly get me to feel anything much, I'm sure it's different for Artem stans though having him propose after probably following his story for 2 years XD good on you guys have fun with your mans!

For me though who had just started, it did not have that much of an effect. After I got the Luke anniversary card I was excited and went into the story oh so innocently not knowing back then that Luke cards are honestly heart wrenching.

It led to me crying in bed while the sun was rising from the window as Luke says “That's because I love you.”

The way how he blocks the wind from her and lets it hit him instead at that exact moment is freaking PEAK writing.

That card showed me a lot more about this man who is so shackled by his own emotions and circumstance, that he's willing to sacrifice everything even his own wants and dreams for the one he loves.

Have you guys seen that one official art with Rosa posing as Themis? And the boys are represented by the objects around her? Luke is the sword, Artem is the balance, Vyn is the blindfold, and Marius is the snake by her leg.

It starts to make sense why Luke is holding onto her sword to the point of bleeding, he's bleeding yet he looks up to her in absolute devotion not caring for what happens to him and his eyes are only always on her. He’s willing to be her sword, to take all of the pain and protect her so she can be happy.

My life.. has not been what is considered “normal”. I'm not going to give my backstory in this post aHAHAH but at the time when I started Tears of Themis I was going through a very bad point in my life where I was close to have given up completely on my future and accepted my fate as it is. I had shut down completely, and I went back to becoming a shut-in which is honestly something I went through for four years before, it wasn't good.

When you reach that point, you start becoming apathetic to everything.

Luke however, somehow started making me start having emotions again. Reading and learning about this character was actually affecting me in a way I have not been affected in a long time. He felt.. real, like I could feel his emotions, his love, his despair.

And that's part of why I got so attached to him and he became my comfort, because of him, I started to feel human again.

AHA CRINGE. OK enough with the sadness.

But I'll never forget how much Luke and Tears of Themis helped me keep a grip during those hard months. I'm in a better place now, it's not good- but it's better, and I still just open this game and visit Luke to help me ground myself.

One time after a bad day I accidentally touched him and he said this, I went insane-

I think that says a lot about the state of my sanity AHAHAH

So I was mostly going through them for uh research out of curiosity

But I think it might interest Sontails fans to know that shockingly few of the English game manuals comment about either Sonic or Tails seeing the other as a brother/sibling.

For reference, as I went down the list of Sonic games on Wikipedia and checked the english manuals, I didn't see a single English manual before Sonic Heroes list them as brothers to each other (no mention of relationship at worst, and best friends/buddies at most). Funnily enough, the Sonic Heroes Manual was also the first English Manual I saw list that many ages at once. The only ones I could find before that listed Knuckles' and Charmy's ages. So as far as I've gathered, Sonic heroes may be the first English Manual to claim Tails as 8 years old (which also was the manual that changed Charmy's age from 16 to 6), and was the only English manual I found that listed Tails' age at all

And between Sonic Heroes and the Wii U/3DS Sonic titles (when manuals stopped having any extra info aside from controls in them), I found—what—like four that mention them being like brothers?

I did look at this a couple weeks ago but like. Those four I found were Sonic Heroes, Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Rush, and Sonic Rush Adventure.

*Four* Sonic game manuals from the plethora of games that released before 3ds/wiiu titles came out. 3 of those 4 are handheld nintendo exclusives. That's 1991 through about 2011 (3DS) or 2013 (WiiU)

Is this...interesting to anyone else?

Let me tell you, I went through a lot of game manuals. Even for games Tails doesn't star in. The rest of the manuals I looked through only had one of either Sonic or Tails, didn't list character bios for them, or didn't note their relationship to each other in any capacity.

Given what I've heard about the Knuckles Chaotix Japanese game manual also listing Vector and Espio's ages as well as Charmy's (whereas the English Manual only lists Charmy's), I'd love to see translations of the Japanese versions of all the Sonic game manuals. It's hard not to wonder what changes there are between the versions.

But in any case, food for thought.

ROCK EMOJI RATING

I sent a rock emoji in Discord today and let me tell you i was stunned by what i saw. I needed to know if all rock emojis were that bad, or if it was a special stand-out. I won't spoil the answers, but here's my rating of ever rock emoji, as listed here: https://emojipedia.org/rock#designs

it looks like a de-saturated blob of chewed gum. That's not a solid object, that's goop. 3/10

WhatsApp (2020-2023)

I see what they're going for here- it certainly looks like a rock, and I appriciate the attempt at giving it a kind of crag-y nature to it, but to me it ends up looking a bit disjointed. The texturing is nice, I like the wavy lines on the side- i'm not sure if real rocks would have a pattern like that but I see what they're going for. 8/10

Next up, Microsoft,... OH microsoft baby what are you doing DOING

the first one was fine!!! It was so fine!!!! The shading is ok, and the thick black outline was really helping to define it as an object. Without the outline its hardly there. It's not even a unique shape its just a slightly wonky triangle, and the shading makes NO sense on the newer ones. I don't like it. the past is in the past, they're being rated for their current sins: 2/10

Microsoft 3D fluent (2023)

this looks like the texture for an iron nugget in Minecraft, which sure, iron is a type of rock, i guess. it also looks like the free to earn currency in a sci-fi NFT game. Still identifiable as a type of rock, i guess. 5/10

Samsung (2020-2023)

This one is nice- its a rock. I like the gloss, it seems polished, which is maybe a bit funny because its simultaneously polished but also a bit mossy at the bottom, but these are all aspects that rocks have, and thus that makes it a good stand in for the concept of a rock. 8/10

Google Noto Color Emoji (2020-2023)

Well, its a rock. I appreciate how it leans more into a warm grey as opposed to all the cool tone (or..straight up white????) rocks we've seen so far. My main issue is with the bit of shading in the center of it- I'm typing this on a computer and haven't seen this emoji in its native environment of being small on a phone screen, so I tried zooming out the webpage as far as it'd go (30%) and the shading certainly looks better small, but it still strikes me as a bit off- i wonder if it really needs to be there. Not a bad rock by any means though, 7/10

Noto Emoji Font (2023)

So, this is actually a black and white version of the previous emoji, and that makes me appreciate both more. I wish they followed the shape of the lines more with the color emoji, because here the shape is really spot on. It's both a rock and a mountain. 8/10

Apple (2020-2023)

This isn't just a rock, this is a CHUNK of EARTH. it's got DETAIL, its got STRIPES. it's a nice fucking rock. 10/10

Emojipedia Sample Images (2020)

"Sample emoji designs developed by Emojipedia for illustrative purposes." (Emojipedia)- hey quick question....sample of WHAT? Illustrative of WHAT? This looks like a chunk of ore from an old school RPG. This is ripped from Runescape (not actually). It's the only rock that's straight up green. It looks WORSE when its smaller. 7/10

Icons8 (2023)

Ok. I can't hate every single one of these kind of simplistic rock emojis that are just angular blobs of color...but with something as simple as a rock its just so hard to get it minimal in a satisfying way- but it's NOT impossible. This one isn't so bad, its just kinda...meh, I guess. 5/10

OpenMoji (2020-2023)

colorized Pictochat drawing. You could fight on this in Super Smash Bros. The last of the black outlined rocks (well, kinda)- though for some reason the lines don't fully connect. It almost looks like a face to me for some reason. 6/10

Sony Playstation (2021)

this is a minimal rock done well. The shading makes sense, its got a solid rock shape. 6/10

TossFace (2022-2023)

what the fuck is this. It looks like the doodles all over my school work after i learned what a vanishing point is. It's simultaneously popping out at you and receeding back into the screen. Lighting? Who is she. awful. 0/10

JoyPixels (2020-2023)

this one is battle scarred. This is a rock that's been through some shit. 3/10

Twitter Emoji Stickers (2022)

WHAT A LEGEND. This looks like an asset from a mobile game. Love the sheen and the perspective. It's even a warm grey! Such a fantastic Rock. 11/10

Microsoft Teams (3D Animated) (2023)

well I'll be damned, a competent Rock from Microsoft. I don't know why they lean so heavily into cold light greys, but hey at least this one isn't straight up white I guess. 5/10

Huawei (2023)

This looks like an unmoulded lump of clay- its even got divots that are roughly fingerprint shaped. Not bad though. 4/10

Facebook (2020-2023)

This looks like someone's 4th ever attempt at shading something realistically. Its an unblended circle, except it seems like they tried to blend a ,little bit in places and it looks...incredibly sloppy up close. what the fuck. 1/10

It’s a week before his birthday! Wei Ying wakes up and can tell it’s going to be a good day. It might even be a good week! He has plans today to go out later with his siblings. It's rare that they all have a day off, and he's excited that they get to do what he wants to do.

And you never know! He might meet the love of his life during a ghostly historical tour!

Well. It's unlikely, but it just feels like that kind of day. One where anything can happen. He even woke up early, excited to start the day and go to a ghostly historical tour .

He's also excited it's finally cool enough out that he can put on his boots without sweating to death. Autumn is great!

The other day Jiang Yanli had hinted that she had a cake planned for him next week, and she always gave him the most thoughtful presents of something he'd mentioned needing in passing in like July. He was also looking forward to the PlayStation gift card Jiang Cheng inevitably bought him every year because he overthought things and then panicked.

But, he suspected Jiang Cheng used a vacation day so he could come hang out at the ghostly historical tour with them, so that was all that mattered. Truly. #YunmengBros.

The tour didn't start until 7:30 pm, after sunset, so he dragged his siblings to the autumn market first. His sister bought fresh local vegetables, and his brother found a cool sword replica he eyed obviously and then pretended he didn't care about. Wei Ying made eye contact with his sister, and they silently communicated over which one of them would buy it for him once his birthday rolled around.

But! Jiang Cheng's birthday wasn't first. Wei Ying's birthday was first. Which meant it was more important by 5 days! It was logic that worked as a child and logic that worked as an adult.

They all stopped at food vendors to grab something to eat. Wei Ying got a corn on the cob on a stick (it was fine) and some habanero tacos (very good). He ate everything quickly so they could get to the ghostly historical tour faster, and then had to wait for Jiang Yanli to decide what to eat and then eat it - the foodie - and for Jiang Cheng to decide what to eat and then eat it - the picky eater.

Eugh. Every time.

"You can get a dessert," Jiang Yanli pointed out to him in a gentle, amused tone. "You're going to be waiting a while."

“Yeah because Jiang Cheng eats like a grandma.”

“At least I don’t eat like starving orphan!” Jiang Cheng snapped. Then he paled. “Uh. I mean.”

Wei Ying shrugged. “Well it’s true.”

It was cool though. He had food security now! He bounced in his seat impatiently.

“Why are you looking forward to this so much?”

“Do you know the kind of haaaauuuuntings there are in the old part of town?”

“Sure?”

“It’s gonna be cool!”

It was cool! They arrive at the meeting point after dark, the whole area felt spooky. There was a fog coming in off the bay! He couldn’t even plan how cool that was!!

They were 3 of 30 people, which was maybe more than Wei Ying would have guessed, but they were doing this close to Halloween so it made sense. There were entire families in attendance, which was very cute! Kids had so much joy in them. It was why he wanted one someday!

He looked around, still bouncing with energy, and spotted

the prettiest person he’d ever seen

Wow.

Wow! Maybe he would meet the love of his life!

“What are you looking at?” Jiang Cheng hissed when Wei Ying’s attention spent too long away from their tour guide.

“Nothing.”

“Oh,” his sister said, laughing behind her hand. “He looks very tall and kind.”

“He looks bitchy,” Jiang Cheng observed.

The three of them looked over at the same time. There was no subtly in the Jiang/Wei household.

“That’s the one!” Wei Ying said, giving his brother’s shoulder a punch. “I’m going to go talk with him.”

“Ok, have fun,” his sister said.

“We’re literally here because of you, jackass,” Jiang Cheng said. “Come back soon.”

That was really cute! So supportive.

Ok, ok, he was going! He sidled up next to the hottie and said “I love ghost stories. Did you know that there used to be an asylum in this location in the 1830s and when they broke ground for the library they found a pit of bones under the old basement? They say that sometimes in the spring finger and toe bones still surface around the foundation and that there are spots in building that are always cold.”

“While the location of the asylum is a demonstrable fact, local lore is not,” the hottie responded.

"Oh, so you don't believe in ghosts?" Wei Ying asked. "That's ok. I'm Wei Ying."

He put out his hand for the hottie to shake and instead got extreme side-eye.

"Are you part of the tour?" The man next to hottie asked. They had a very similar look, but this one had a kind softness to him that fortunately, or unfortunately, did nothing for him. He just looked like some guy. Funny how that worked, right?

"Me? Ah, no, I'm just a fan of local stories. Storytelling traditions are pretty cool, aren't they?"

"Wei Wuxian," the hottie suddenly said. "You wrote a research article on the ethnomusicology of regional work song traditions in the area."

"I did!" Wei Ying said. "But I am off work today."

"WEI YING!" Jiang Cheng yelled across the parking lot. "WEI YING IT'S ABOUT TO START."

Literally like 10 feet away, but ok Jiang Cheng.

"My brother," Wei Ying nodded. "Time to go, nice talking to you."

He slipped away. Was it nice, though? It had been weird.

"Wei Wuxian," the hottie said, coming up to him after the tour. "You were engaging."

"Thanks," Wei Ying said, swiping his hair back off his face. "I wish I had forewarning to prepare. Good job I'm a giant nerd. Hey, I didn't catch your name."

"Lan Wangji."

Wei Ying gasped. "The historical non-fiction author?"

"Mn."

"I've read your books!"

That was amazing. He was beautiful and smart and with similar interests? What were the odds? They felt very low.

Lan Wangji looked pleased that Wei Wuxian had read him.

"Listen," Wei Wuxian said, "I need to go, but we should keep talking! Want to meet for lunch later this week?"

Lan Wangji hesitated for a moment. "I would enjoy that."

Wei Ying beamed. Wow. "Great, it's a date! My email is available on the university website."

"Mine is available online as well," Lan Wangji said.

"Even better! I'll contact you."

Wei Ying was nervous! Did Lan Wangji know that when he said 'it's a date!' he had meant 'it's a date!'?

He arrived at the restaurant shortly before Lan Wangji did. He hadn't had time to go home and change, so he was in his work clothing - which was, honestly, very close to what he'd pick to wear out with Lan Wangji. He'd spared a moment to wonder if he regretted meeting the man while wearing his regular clothing, but if Lan Wangji didn't like him in his kickass boots, he didn’t like him. Wei Ying was loud and chaotic.

Lan Wangji was already at the restaurant. He stood as Wei Ying approached, and the politeness and courtesy of it struck him as a novelty. The last man he'd been on a date with had tried to dine & dash, despite having a decent job. It had been their only date.

"I'm glad you came," Lan Wangji said, and he sounded genuine. Maybe a little intense, but genuine. Wei Ying like that.

"I meant it when I suggested a date," Wei Ying blurted out. "Are you -- I mean -- did you know?"

"I had hoped," Lan Wangji said.

"Great," Wei Wuxian grinned. "Well, have you eaten here before?"

"No. I looked the menu up beforehand."

"Hey, me too! I never go anywhere without it. Well, not never. Sometimes I'll impulsively eat somewhere if it's right in front of me. I think I want the house special pasta." He said. Then he looked at Lan Wangji. "Did you ever think about how knowing what you want means that in the end we'll have spent a little less time together?"

Lan Wangji thought about that for a moment. "I see it as a positive. Being confident in what I want means I have wasted less time on uncertainties."

They were not talking about the same thing. Wow. Wow. "Are you certain?"

"Mn," Lan Wangji answered. "I am certain." They held eye contact. "I, too, would like the house special."

Wei Ying burst out laughing. "Good," he said. "Good. I like that."
