Revising the HSR Data Bank for Readability: An Idle Side-Project
This is a masterlist post for a little side-project I've been thinking about--fan-edited versions of Star Rail lore text that have been (amateurishly) revised for (slightly better?) readability. See the lengthy note below for a full explanation of my intentions and complete lack of qualifications for this pet project.
(Edit: the important disclaimers below were originally included in my first post on this topic, which shared my revision of the "Band of Sizzling Thunder" relic sets. Because I enjoyed the exercise, I wanted to do at least a few more of these, but since they all really should have massive disclaimers attached to them I thought I'd just stick them together in a masterlist and link to/from here where needed. Sorry if you're seeing this pop up repetitively. I'm bad at Tumblr.)

This is something quite different for this blog, and I feel like it needs some explanation, as well as a few important disclaimers.
Honkai Star Rail is, in my opinion, an extraordinarily well-written game. It is also comparatively–again, in my opinion–an impressively well-translated game. ‘Comparatively’ is the operative word here; so many game companies don’t take nearly the time and the care to secure immersive experiences for audiences playing in languages outside the company’s own primary one.
Despite miHoYo’s comparatively immersive translations, there’s still a lot of room for improvement–especially in the massive amount of text-only lore buried in the various codices Honkai Star Rail has. Some of this stuff–Data Bank entries, readable collectables, etc.–can be really hard to follow and enjoy in English. Vocabulary is often imprecise. Simple topics that (in my opinion, at least) are intended to be clearly understood are obfuscated by weird stilted grammar and phrasing. These issues really stand out to me while I’m dabbling with my Data Bank narrations. Sometimes it takes me quite a while to piece together what the heck a sentence is trying to say, much less what it means for the grander universe of Star Rail, and that's a pity.
So, what I’m doing in these posts is attempting to revise these entries--to reorganize them into smoother, clearer versions of themselves by fixing issues of vocabulary and mechanics. I am not re-translating. I cannot read any language but English, to my shame; I am only playing with a lovingly crafted fragment of a beautifully built world and trying to rub it a bit cleaner and brighter with my own meager, monolinguistic perspective.
My toyed-with versions don’t--cannot--solve the problems these entries have with imprecision and unclear intended meaning, because I'm not an authority on the original Chinese text and its intentions, or on Star Rail or Honkai series lore. What may seem to be clarifications in my revisions are truthfully just bluster–I’m arranging the words into shapes that make the most sense to me, but the conclusions I draw are my own, are not canon, and honestly are not always conscious on my part. It would not be wise to assume anything below is accurate to the cosmos of Star Rail. I will take care to link the authentic in-game text in any posts of this nature that I make.
And finally, boy oh boy am I not a professional anything about this. This is a thing for fun and for joy, because I just really like Star Rail–and if you’ve got tips, tricks, thoughts or feelings, advice or ideas or revisions of your own, I’d be delighted to learn from you.

"That job is beneath me"
I don't think doing any job that needs doing is beneath me. Because I learned from tech industry startups that, as the boss, as the owner, you have to wear multiple hats for positions you won't be able to fill. Either because nobody wants to waste time with a job that's likely to go bankrupt in a week, or because you can't afford to fill them.
That's my mindset, and the military reinforced that idea. Because there wasn't anybody else to do the job if we didn't do it.
When I talk about a job being beneath me, I mean that I'm over qualified to work under most, if not all business owners. Especially if it's a chain. Either I would have to omit a lot of info on my resumè, because they won't believe somebody of my caliber would walk through their front door. Or, they just won't be able to match my level of skill in their own job, or work ethic in a position they put me in.
Basically, I'll end up stepping on the boss's toes, the boss's boss's toes and regional 's toes. And they will not appreciate it. Their response will be negative because I will be "acting out of line" making it tougher to do their job, and a whole host of things that are not conducive to a healthy work environment.
"That Job is Beneath me" doesn't mean it's a job I won't do, it's that I would do it, and I'd still get hate for it. It's not that I don't trust management, or restaurant owners, or anything of the like. It's that I know too much about operations, that they will not trust me. Or they will over rely on me.
I would not be happy working for them, and they would not be happy working with me.
That's why I set out to start my own business in the first place, because I have that ethic. Those core values. And the reason why it fell through was because of the reasoning I've already described, just in a different facet of life.
People always think they know more than you about something. They think I'm the one causing problems when I talk facts, statistics, and data analysis.
Because they're used to working with different kinds of people. But I'm the zebra when they say "think horses not zebras". And though I don't hide it, they straight up can't believe it.
"That Job is Beneath me" means I've worked for people more qualified than the manager I'll be working for. It means I'm more qualified than that manager I'd be working for. And doing a job for less than my qualifications means I'll be sitting around bored, complaining, and generally setting a bad example for entry-level workers, that'd be better off if I don't set that bad example.
It means you can't pay me what I'm actually worth to work the position that you need filled.
Trust me, I've been motivated to work jobs that I would enjoy doing just for enjoyment's sake. Hell, I even demonstrated it, live on twitch. But I didn't get paid anything.
I would gladly do lots of things for free, as long as I'm being paid what I'm worth. But I'm not, you can't, and so I won't.
Till then, enjoy whatever I create when inspiration strikes me.
I will not be put in a position where I'll end up doing things way above my pay grade anyways. I did that, I got shit on for it, I won't do it again.

Back On Track [Initiative - Harris] Outcome Reporting Review
Unless specified otherwise, all data is being pulled from Harris' report
Back On Track [BOT] is the result of an earlier initiative Harris outlined and implemented [DR3 aka Division of Recidivism, Reduction, and Re-Entry] and was outlined and implemented in partnership with LASD and LAP [LA county sheriff's department and LA Probation department respectively] which will mean police, social workers, legal aid support staff, detainee advocates, etc, as well as Harris' on office as the Attorney General and RD3's staff (legal staff, state-social welfare workers and community liaisons primarily).
The bulk of this review will go under a cut for space, and I will include my final determinations below:
Program Outcome Assessment Rating: Limited Independent Efficacy. Limited-to-Fair Combinatory Efficacy**
**Re-evaluation of program critical due to the discrediting of several measures/scales/models utilized in its core premise/service model
Post Description Rating: In-Accurate/Misleading
Review Process Discussion
BOT outlines and presumes the following model as a path of "re-entry" [we are going to define this operationally here as "restoration/implementation of sustainable access to state-legitimized resource supply and distribution systems]. Functional re-entry in this context is considered a pre-requisite for "reducing recidivism rates" which we will define as "reducing the frequency of state-authority enforcment by reducing reliance on state-delegitimized resource supply/distribution systems."

This review will make no moral comment on the assumptions within these operational definitions, and will have a functional conversation about the mechanisms they utilize/interact with. Additionally I will outline the access constrictions that have been addressed or tolerated by the program design.
Notably, the stakeholders listed by the report as involved in development of a re-entry path does NOT include detainees or even, more specifically, potential candidates for the program [or at least is not reported to do so explicitly]. The program was not offered to those identified as low risk for recidivism, focusing on moderate to high risk candidates. Functionally, this means seeking to understand what about a *person* is most likely to increase risk of recidivism, as low risk candidates are being seen as "uncontrolled factors" beyond the scope of the program. Accepted access constriction therefore includes "existing access to legitimate need meeting systems that is made tenuous by crisis." Additionally, the program focuses on areas that participants themselves have some level of influence in, decentering areas where outside forces may be putting the participant at risk for further exposure to state authority enforcement beyond their control. This will inherently make the program less effective for participants who are a part of communities already at risk of over-policing such as racial and ethnic minorities, low-income individuals, people who rely on self-managed substance use/consumption like "drugs"/DIY HRT/other self-managed medical needs, those with disabling mental/physical health support needs, and parolees. This effectiveness gap is not necessarily an indicator that the program lacks rigorous value, but does alert us to the likelihood that it would need to operate in conjuction with a program(s) aimed at reducing such gaps.
Another important note is that the program is being somewhat misrepresented in the earlier comment. BOT did NOT in fact "sentence people to schooling/training/education" INSTEAD of jail, or offer it as an alternative to detaintion in any way. The program would be more accurately described as transitional services prior to and following RELEASE from detaintion. This is not necessarily an indicator that the program lacks rigorous value, but it is notable that advocates for detaintion abolition have been able to demonstrate similar programs both with AND without detention while BOT explicitly does not offer a detention-free path to these services, or strengthen access to the programs that DO offer detention-free paths to these services on its own.
Additional critical notes are that the needs and risk assessments listed in the program outline are by and large standardized for use is legal settings, NOT public health settings [see particularly TCU-CTS, COMPAS, and TCU-CEST]. Additionally, many of the measures were all created by Texas Christian University's Institute of Behavioral Research who has since been forced to recall and re-evaluate SEVERAL of its scales, including ones used in BOT due to national backlash from the mental health "patient" advocacy and clinical practice spheres. Quite literally, these scales have been wholly discredited as having any legitimacy in public health and social welfare work.
We can perhaps assume that Harris may not have known this at the time, however criticisms of the TCU-CTS extend at least as far back as 2002, 14 years prior to program implementation. It would be unwise to presume there is *no reason* behind the choice to rely almost exclusively on correctional-setting exclusive data measures in a transitional setting program, many of which were already controversial within the social welfare research sphere, and several of which are by now entirely discredited and rejected.
I can find no documentation at time of writing suggesting that the use of these measures/scales in BOT was re-evaluated following their peer-reviewed discrediting, despite BOT's continued claim to adhere to evidence based standards. If someone is aware of documentation to this effect, I would love to see a copy for review and clarification.
Finally, I want to highlight two of the "further development" areas highlighted within the exploratory program itself, as I believe the report itself and I are in agreement about these two areas as core vulnerabilities, but I also want people to observe the difference in how I have made these observations and how I am conveying the narrative vs how the report is choosing to present the same points. I believe that, from conception, BOT is operating from a now-discredited correctional/detention based recidivism model rather than a preventative model which is more likely to serve ALL parties and candidates, including both those who were served effectively by BOT and those who weren't.
This does not suggest the program modal lacks rigorous value, however it is critical that any program which has had its fundamentals discredited in this profound and widespread a manner be re-evaluated under appropriate inter-/intra-communal peer review and be adjusted in accordance with any resultant recommendations. At time of writing, I can find no documentation of this process being initiated, in process, or completed. If someone has access to documentation of this process, I would love to see a copy for further review and clarification.
