Elsa's Crochet Commission Info
So, it occurred to me that my editing and writing commission info had actual posts, which were linked in my pinned post, whereas my crochet commission info was just a separate page on my blog, which means all the people who only use mobile probably couldn't see it. Considering that, I figured I should make an actual post for my crochet commission stuff.
Things To Know:
I'll take three crochet commissions at a time, but they won't necessarily be first come, first serve. I'll probably work on all of them simultaneously, which means if Person A orders a shawl and then Person B orders a hat, Person B's hat will likely be done before Person A's shawl.
I do clothing items, accessories, plushies, blankets, etc.
I crochet. I do not knit. I do not know how to knit. I don't have any imminent plans to learn how to knit.
The price of the item will be determined by the complexity of the end result, the amount of time I estimate it will take, the type of yarn you want it made of (wool or cotton are more expensive than acrylic, alpaca is more expensive than sheep wool, etc.), and the cost of the pattern if you want a specific item and the pattern costs money.
Payment will be half up front, then half + shipping afterwards. I have Paypal and Venmo. (I prefer Venmo.)
The item will be made in an environment where cats and dogs are present, if you need to worry about allergies. I can't really feasibly escape them.
What To Do:
If you're interested, get in touch. You can DM me here on tumblr or email me at [email protected]. In the unlikely event I already have three commissions lined up, I'll let you know, but if you want I can let you know when a slot frees up later.
Give me as many details of what you want as you can.
If you haven't presented specific patterns and yarn choices, I will supply options for your approval.
Once the details are determined, I will give the price and you'll pay half.
I will commence working. I can offer a rough estimate of when the item will be finished, but I can't make any guarantees.
When I'm done, I will take photos and show you. You'll send the second half of the payment + shipping.
I will package up the item and give you the tracking info, and get it to the post office, at which point it is figuratively and literally out of my hands.
Assuming the post office doesn't shit the bed, your item will arrive! Yay! I don't require photos of you with the item, but I will appreciate them.

Venmo Account Verification Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you are new to Venmo or are looking to enjoy its full range of features, understanding the Venmo account verification process is essential. Venmo, owned by PayPal, is a popular mobile payment platform in the U.S., allowing users to send and receive money quickly. However, to ensure security and comply with financial regulations, Venmo requires account verification. This guide will walk you through how to verify your Venmo account, why it’s necessary, and what steps are involved in the verification process.
Why is Venmo Account Verification Important?
Verifying your Venmo account isn’t just a formal procedure; it unlocks additional features, enhances your transaction limits, and strengthens the security of your funds and personal information. This verification process is required by financial regulatory bodies to confirm users’ identities, ensuring the safety of funds and protecting against fraudulent activity.
Once you have a Venmo verified account, you gain access to these benefits:
Increased Transaction Limits: Verified accounts enjoy higher limits on sending, receiving, and transferring funds.
Enhanced Security: Verification helps Venmo confirm that you are the legitimate account holder, protecting your funds from unauthorized access.
Ability to Use Certain Features: Only verified users can transfer funds from Venmo to their bank accounts and vice versa.
Step-by-Step Guide to Verify Venmo Account
If you’re ready to get started with verifying your Venmo account, here’s a detailed walkthrough of the entire process.
1. Open the Venmo App and Access Settings
To begin, open the Venmo app on your mobile device and log in. Once you’re logged in:
Tap on the menu icon (usually represented by three horizontal lines) in the top left or right corner.
Scroll down to Settings and select it to open a new menu.
2. Choose the 'Identity Verification' Option
In the Settings menu, look for the option labeled Identity Verification. This option directs you to the verification process for confirming your identity, which is a key step in completing your Venmo account verification.
3. Provide Personal Information
Venmo will prompt you to enter some basic personal information as part of the process to verify your identity:
Full Name
Date of Birth
Social Security Number (SSN)
Address
This information is essential for Venmo to validate your identity and meet regulatory requirements. Make sure all details match those on your government-issued ID to avoid issues with verification.
4. Upload a Government-Issued ID
To further authenticate your account, Venmo may ask for a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. This additional step is designed to protect both users and Venmo from fraudulent activity.
Here’s how to upload your ID:
Take a clear photo of your ID (front and back if needed).
Ensure that the details on the ID are legible and that the entire ID is visible.
Upload the photo directly through the app when prompted.
5. Wait for Venmo to Review Your Information
Once you’ve submitted your information and ID, Venmo will review it. The verification process typically takes between 1-3 business days, depending on the volume of verification requests. You’ll receive a notification from Venmo once your account is verified or if any additional information is required.
How to Complete Venmo Bank Account Verification
In addition to verifying your identity, Venmo may require you to verify your bank account before you can transfer funds. This step ensures that the bank account linked to your Venmo account is genuinely yours.
1. Link Your Bank Account to Venmo
Open the Venmo app and go to Settings.
Select Payment Methods and then choose Add a Bank or Card.
Follow the prompts to enter your bank account details.
2. Verify the Linked Bank Account
Venmo offers two methods for bank account verification:
Instant Verification: Venmo partners with Plaid to instantly verify certain banks. You’ll need to provide your online banking credentials, which will be authenticated through Plaid.
Micro-Deposits Verification: If instant verification isn’t available, Venmo will send two small deposits to your bank account, typically under $1. Check your bank statement for these deposits, which should arrive within 1-3 business days.
Once the deposits arrive:
Return to the Venmo app.
Go to Settings > Payment Methods, select your bank, and enter the exact amounts of the micro-deposits to confirm your account.
Troubleshooting Common Issues in Venmo Account Verification
Sometimes, users encounter issues while verifying their Venmo accounts. Here are some common problems and tips to help resolve them:
Incorrect Information: Ensure your personal information matches what’s on your government-issued ID.
Issues with SSN: If you’re not comfortable providing your full SSN, Venmo may allow you to enter the last four digits. However, this may limit some features.
Photo ID Not Accepted: Ensure your ID photo is clear, well-lit, and meets Venmo’s guidelines.
Bank Account Verification Fails: If micro-deposits don’t appear, double-check your account information and ensure there are no restrictions on small deposits in your bank account.
If issues persist, contact Venmo’s Customer Support for further assistance. They can provide guidance and may help resolve any additional verification issues you encounter.
Conclusion
Completing the Venmo account verification process unlocks the full potential of Venmo, enhancing security and enabling full access to all available features. From identity verification to bank account verification, this guide has detailed each step to ensure you can verify your account seamlessly. By following these instructions, you’ll not only secure your Venmo account but also enjoy increased transaction limits and a better overall experience on the platform.

Interesting AI Retail Odyssey Thoughts
Tumblr media
Sustainability in AI Retail
Why wouldn’t AI and machine learning be developing new channels for they purchases and sales, given how rapidly these technologies are revolutionizing almost every area of they lives? Yes, they are.
Although AI retail has existed for as long as people have, at least in terms of point-of-sale systems and physical establishments, it is currently viewed as somewhat outdated. Desktop shopping and e-commerce are eating traditional physical AI retail for lunch. As artificial intelligence operates on the long-standing tenet that people deal with one another for products and unique items, it’s worthwhile to investigate what patterns AI might foster.
First, let’s examine a system called Polaris that aims to maximize a customer-facing strategy. This illustrates how some disruptors are still focusing on conventional business strategies, but the company’s website also uses a specific vocabulary, emphasizing concepts like “see around corners” and “adapt and innovate,” which are essential for modern merchants.
Polaris spokespeople discuss the post-COVID world and its implications for trade. A consumer is heard stating, “I want outcomes,” in the context of the website’s presentation of the AI platform. This highlights the need of having data-driven business models.
This is a further excerpt from Polaris’s “Go-to-customer is the new way” section:
Integration Challenges in AI Retail
Businesses must adapt to new methods of fostering growth in the face of permanent shifts in traditional demand brought about by digital disruption. Nowadays, co-creating demand with clients is a crucial part of any business plan.
That seems fantastic, but in order to truly go behind the scenes and begin witnessing personally how this can benefit AI retailers, you have to invest some time in researching technology such as these.
To put it another way, Polaris is leveraging AI to improve the shopping experience, which could lead to a successful comeback for traditional brick-and-mortar stores.
On the other hand, this technology on the other end of shopping is exciting.
Check out Claim, a platform that leverages social purchasing with the intention of “making shopping fun” and assisting brands in coming up with fresh approaches to engage.
Claim boasts an excellent clientele, including alumni from Harvard and Goldman Sachs, and a user base of about 10,000.
The startup claims that onboarding takes only 15 minutes, and he think it’s a great idea to represent transactions with colorful small NFT-style tokens. It achieves a social purchasing strategy by using Venmo and Plaid; brands spend less and customers have an easier time!
People are, after all, drawn to the simple. That is the entire concept of drop shipping, as well as many other aspects of it. Furthermore, they will be able to remove even more speed bumps off the AI retail highway because to the automation that AI provides.
He has been considering the future of AI retail in great detail. He say “will” since many of the significant adjustments have already taken place. However, there is still a lot of room for AI to disrupt the game, even with sophisticated routing in place for UPS, Amazon, and other companies. Let’s continue exploring novel approaches to accomplish goals in the AI retail industry.

How to Add Money to Venmo? Explained All Methods
Venmo is the ideal mobile solution to split bills and send funds between friends and family.
If you are Wondering How To Add Money To Venmo let's take a look at the many options on this PayPal-owned app.
What is Venmo?
Venmo is a mobile payment app that has a twist. It allows you to pay and receive money in a matter of seconds. Its main purpose is to split bills and make payments between family and friends.
Since PayPal owns the app, it works with many sites, apps, or retailers that accept PayPal.
Its unique feature is social payments. A feed displays your financial transactions and purchases with your friends. This adds a fun element to shopping and sharing purchases. You can also use it to promote charitable causes or side businesses.
It's a popular choice for almost everyone. These are some of the reasons it is so popular:
Its inclusion of crypto
A generous cashback card
All the top-of-the-line features you would expect from a mobile payments app
If all of your friends are using Venmo, then you might want to learn how to transfer money into Venmo.
How do I add money to my Venmo account?
There are many ways to add money to Venmo. A balance can be maintained in your account just like a PayPal account or a bank account. These funds can be used to make any purchase.
Alternatively, you can pay directly using other accounts without having to maintain a balance in the app.
Transferring funds from your bank account is the easiest way to add money to Venmo. One drawback to this is that Venmo will require you to first be approved for Venmo’s Mastercard debit card. Here's how it works.
Bank Account
To transfer money from a bank into Venmo, you first need to link your bank account with the app. This should be a regular checking account to avoid any problems. This should not be a savings account or any other type that may have difficulty transferring funds quickly.
To link your bank account:
First, go to the "Me" tab
For settings, hit the gear icon
Swipe down to "Payment Methods" then tap "Add a bank card or bank account"
Enter your bank account details including routing and account numbers.
Linking your Bank Account to Venmo
You will need to verify your account before you can transfer money into your Venmo balance.
If you're willing to provide your online banking username, password, and login information, linking your bank can be done immediately. Venmo uses Plaid to access your account. This is an encrypted method. It checks your identity to verify that you have sufficient funds for payments.
This form of verification is not accepted by all banks. The second option is to do a micro-transfer. This type of transaction may be used to verify PayPal or other online financial transactions.
Venmo will take two small deposits, each less than $1, and then withdraw the funds. This process can take between 1 and 3 days. Once all payments have been cleared, your account will be verified.
Venmo recommends that you have a minimum of $2 in order to conduct the verification process. This is because banks might process repayments before deposits clear.
You can now make Venmo payments directly from your bank account. Verified accounts are able to make combined transactions up to $4,999.99 per Week. However, a single transaction cannot exceed $2,000
How do I transfer money from my bank to Venmo?
You can add funds to your Venmo account by adding funds from your bank if you have a Venmo Debit Card (see below). This is how you do it:
Tap the "Me" tab to go to "Manage Balance"
Then tap 'Add Money' or 'Add or Transfer' depending upon your app version
Enter the amount
Click on the bank account that you have previously added to confirm the transaction. The process of adding to your Venmo account can take 5 working days.
You don't have to keep a Venmo account balance. Most people do not choose to. You can tap the payment icon in the top right to use your bank's account as the source of a backup payment.
Venmo balance funds will be used first if they are available. Any amount remaining will be taken out of your backup, in this instance your bank.
You can use your bank to pay if you have a zero balance
With a Debit Card
The process of adding a debit card to your bank account as a payment method is the same as adding a bank account.
Go to Settings
Then to "Payment Methods"
Tap to 'Add a Bank or Card'. Then choose 'Card'.
Then, enter your card details either manually or by using the photo scanning feature
You don't need to verify your card as with a bank account.
How do you add money using a debit card to Venmo?
This option is not available if you have Venmo’s official debit card account. You will need a linked bank account to do this.
To make a payment directly from your debit card:
Tap the payment icon in the top right
Select a contact to add or remove a recipient
Select your card to be a 'Backup Payment'
The card will immediately become the payment source if you do not maintain a sufficient balance.
With a Credit Card
Follow these steps to add money to Venmo using credit card accounts:
Go to Settings, then Payment Methods
Tap to 'Add a Bank or Card'. Then choose Car'.
Then, enter your card details either manually or by using the photo scanning feature
Verification is not necessary as long as the Venmo account name matches the one on your card.
To make a payment directly from your credit card:
Tap the payment icon in the top right
Select a contact to add or remove a recipient
Use your credit card to make a backup payment'
If there is no Venmo balance, your credit card will be used as the payment source.
You cannot use a credit card to fund your Venmo balance. These payments are not considered cash advances or purchases.
Also, credit card payments are subject to a 3% Venmo fee unless you purchase from one or two select outlets.
An alternative option is to apply for Venmo’s Visa credit card, which comes with tons of benefits.
Other ways to add money to Venmo
We've provided the most popular answers for how to add money to the Venmo App. But there are many more. Let's have a look at these:
Venmo Debit Card
Venmo has its own Mastercard debit card branded by Venmo. You can use it to fund your Venmo account and then spend the balance. It can be used anywhere in the United States that allows contactless payments.
How to apply for a Venmo Mastercard
The Cards tab of the app allows you to apply for the card.
You need to provide:
Your name
Address
Date of birth
A scan or clear photograph of any identity document (can include a passport, driver’s license, or other US government-issued ID).
You may be required to provide proof of address and your SSN.
There are no rigorous credit checks since this isn’t a credit card. The majority of US adults will be approved. However, it is important to verify your identity.
How do I load money on Venmo using a Bank Account?
You can top up your Venmo account balance with your bank account if you have a Venmo debit card. Instead of making purchases or transferring money directly to your bank, deposit funds from your bank into Venmo and keep them there for future use.
This is how you do it:
Tap the "Me" tab. Next, tap "Manage Balance".
Click to 'Add or transfer'
Enter the amount you wish to pay and choose your bank account
The funds should arrive within 3 to 5 business days.
You will see the option labeled "Instant" in your feed if you were one of the lucky recipients of the Instant Money feature. The bank transfer will be available immediately. It may take up to 3-5 business days for your bank statement to reflect the transfer.
This method is only available for $500 per week.
Venmo Debit Card Reload
You may now be wondering if you can add cash to your Venmo card.
Your Venmo balance is the sum of all funds that have been sent to you and/or transferred from your bank account. This balance will be withdrawn automatically whenever you use your Venmo card online or in-store.
If your Venmo balance is not sufficient to cover the purchase, your card can use your bank account as a backup source. You must enable "reloads". It functions just like a regular debit card from a bank.
It will fund Venmo in increments equal to $10 regardless of the purchase price. Venmo will not take $45, but $50 from your bank if you have a $10 balance and spend $55. Venmo will keep the $5 extra in your Venmo account.
To turn on reloads
Go to the Debit Card Section of the app
Tap the Venmo Card Image
You'll be able to toggle reloads off or on.
For transactions to be smooth, you need enough money in your bank account for both the amount that you are spending and the $10 increment.
There are currently no Venmo reload points where you can top-up your account balance. In-app bank transfers are available to fund your Venmo account balance. You can also make a purchase using Venmo debit cards to trigger a recharge.
Venmo Cashback Credit Card
How to add funds to Venmo free of charge? Venmo offers a Visa Credit Card that you can apply for through the app.
You will need to provide proof of identification and personal details for the debit card. To determine your eligibility, a credit check will also be performed.
All applicants will be granted a credit limit of up to $250.
You can get the best credit card perks if you're approved. These include:
Up to 3% Cashback on Groceries
Save 2% on your bills and utilities
All other purchases 1%
Cashback is not like other credit cards and will be added to your Venmo account.
FAQs
How can I make money with Venmo
linking Venmo to your bank, debit, or credit card is the best way to load money. You can then send money or pay directly for your purchases.
To keep an app balance, you will need to first be approved for a Venmo Debit Card. You can then transfer as much money from your bank account as you like.
Venmo will grow if you get money from other people.
Where can I load money onto my Venmo Card?
You can't load your Venmo debit cards in a physical location or store. The card takes funds from your In-App Venmo balance. This can only be funded via bank transfer or by receiving money directly from another Venmo user.
You can still make Venmo purchases that exceed your balance. This can be done by activating the "reloads" option. The excess amount will be taken from your bank account immediately.
Can I immediately add money to my Venmo Account?
Want to instantly add money to Venmo? Only a few users who have a Venmo debit card have been selected to access the Instant Money feature. This feature is currently not available for everyone and has a weekly limit. However, it will be fully rolled out in the next months.

The Untold Story of Plaid: From College Project to Billion Dollar Company
youtube
In 2012, two Duke University students, William Hockey and Zachary Perret, founded a company that would change the financial technology industry forever - Plaid. What started as an idea to simplify financial transactions between individuals and businesses quickly evolved into a company worth billions of dollars.
The story of Plaid is not just a story of financial success, but also one of perseverance and innovation. Hockey and Perret faced numerous challenges along the way, including skepticism from potential investors and the highly-regulated financial industry. However, they were determined to succeed and spent countless hours refining their product and pitching it to investors.
Their hard work paid off when they secured their first major investor, Spark Capital, in 2013. This opened the door for Plaid to raise over $300 million in funding from high-profile investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Goldman Sachs. Today, Plaid is valued at over $13 billion and has become an essential part of the financial technology ecosystem.
So, what exactly does Plaid do? Put simply, it allows different financial apps to connect with each other seamlessly. This means that you can easily transfer money between your bank account and your Venmo or PayPal account, for example, without having to manually enter your banking information every time. Plaid's technology securely connects to thousands of financial institutions and is trusted by millions of users.
The success of Plaid can be attributed to Hockey and Perret's vision for a more connected financial world. They saw the potential for technology to streamline financial transactions and improve the lives of individuals and businesses alike. Today, Plaid continues to innovate and has expanded its services to include identity verification and fraud detection.
In conclusion, the story of Plaid is a testament to the power of hard work, innovation, and a clear vision. From its humble beginnings as a college project to its current status as a financial technology giant, Plaid has changed the way we think about money and has made our financial lives easier and more secure.

Janus Estuaries Vol.2:Different Doors 1.17.22 “I Saw god Again Today”
I saw god again today, Not in the cloudy heavens Nor beams of light Cresting their long radioactive arms Clawing at the soil from out in space    Nor inner space Where pilots pull people along tethered flight
Like standing in queue for a carnival game In the midst of The Last Fling of August Rain soaking through each sun kissed layer Soothing sunburnt peeling skin Smelling of coconut oil Holding too tightly to that final ticket Enough for one chance game To go home a winner, And put a close on long summer days
I saw god today, Not in the rising sun, moon, or stars Nor in the quiet whispers of the rustling trees Waving their spindly limbs in the air Do they beckon closer,        Or caution away? What danger, what joy is there to be had?
With all the fervor of a zealot But lacking all the faith, Of a pastor laid out to pasture Too weary of seeking greener fields Cow pies and cowboy ties both choke Their braided noose about the senses About the neck, Roughed by sun, by sons, by guns, By all the postulation and prostration Wary of service out of fear Shedding tears for sinners Serving soup-kitchen dinners With unruly teenage volunteers I saw good again today, Not in the choir Nor rushing rock breaking water Carving cleaner than any butcher Than any spade could cleave the earth asunder    Exposing the way A smoother path to follow
As though to be at peace in the midnight shower Mixing compounded components Potioncrafting steam, self, and solitude Finding the energy only offered in near-death Drowning and hydration testing moral integrity Braving the gluttony to subdue the sloth Pat dry and drape with cloth To prepare for sleep To prepare for death
I saw god again today, In the rough skilled hands, And smooth voice, Braided and plaided, And wondering what cause the stir What caused the stare? Which is fair, When I know I will see god again, Devoid of all divinity, But only beauty that mortality Can ever know
I saw god again today As I do many days Like I do in many ways With all the words left yet to say

Elsa's Crochet Commissions
Yooooo, I'm Elsa. I am broke and between contracts. I'm attempting to get a small business off the ground, and while I am enjoying the process, it's slow going and I need money in the interim.
I crochet. I crochet a lot, and generally pretty quickly. I can crochet things for you, if that's what you're interested in--especially with Christmas in a few weeks. (granted, if you order something after we're already into December, it will probably not be finished, packaged, and shipped in time for Christmas, sorry) If you're interested in my ready-made stuff, there's a link to my Etsy shop in my pinned post. If you're interested in custom pieces, keep reading!
Examples (under the cut):
(very long post under the cut, sorry)

Dragon scale fingerless gloves, acrylic. $32.
Tumblr media
Granny square purse, acrylic. $45.

The Christmas Edition (Lifetime, 2020)
I actually look really good in hats. Maybe I’ll get one.
Starring: Carly Hughes, Rob Mayes, Marie Osmond, Aloma Wright
Plot Synopsis: It's Christmas time and Jackie, an up-and-coming journalist, finds that her life is at a crossroads until she finds an unexpected opportunity - to run a small-town newspaper in Alaska. Jackie decides to give it a try and relocates to the picture-perfect town. Using a series of Christmas articles, she's able to quickly return the newspaper to profitability and soon falls in love - both with her new home and the handsome son of the paper's former owner. However, when her old boss announces plans to take over the paper for herself, Jackie will need a Christmas miracle to save it. (x)
In My Humble Opinion: You might think that The Christmas Edition is a pleasant enough story about the umpteenth 2020 movie lead who goes to a small town for Christmas for the sake of journalism and finds love, herself and  Christmas magic along the way. And in that way you are right. It is a movie about that.
More importantly though, it is a movie about hats. There are so many hats in this movie. Baseball hats, beanies, normal hats, bonkers hats. Hats of all types and sorts and kinds. This movie really made me think about hats, which I am sure is what the people who made this movie wanted this movie to achieve. A hat revolution. Here are some of the hats that made me think the most.
Tumblr media
Can a Lifetime movie be lead by Rob Mayes without his character being introduced by wearing a hat that makes you wonder about your commitment to the movie you are watching?
Tumblr media
This is the town mayor. He wears a top hat. This movie takes place in 2020.
Tumblr media
No, seriously, this movie takes place in 2020.
Tumblr media
They are newspaper workers and they will wear plaid newspaper hats if they want to!
Tumblr media
The Mayor’s commitment to hats can not and will not be denied. The movie’s commitment to hats can not and will not be denied. Hats off to the many, many hats of The Christmas Edition. It’s what the cool kids are wearing to save journalism, Christmas and small town values, after all!
Tumblr media
Watch If: You never leave the house without a pad and a pen, if your husband loves gingerbread or if you have the intuitive journalist gene.
Skip If: You like to watch your news on a screen, if you would not line up outside to get a print newspaper or if you think Christmas is objective and you will not throw that frisbee.
Final Rating:  ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

Inheritances can be emotional minefields
Let’s just go ahead and get this hard sentence out of the way now.
You are going to have to deal with some of your closest friends and family members dying.
Yuck.
But wait, what is that?  Is that a little.... happiness? WAIT A MINUTE, GRANDMA JUST DIED AND I AM ACTUALLY A LITTLE...happy?  How can that be?  I must be a terrible human being!
Nope.  You are just, well, a human being.  We are messy creatures, some of us more than others (I will leave that up to you to decide who is the messiest of your tribe!).  We always have conflicting emotions:
You can love the NBA and hate the Lakers
You can love JCrew and not be a big fan of plaid
You can love your father but hate that he smokes
And you can be anguished that your nan (shout out to any Britons who follow!) has passed away and a little stoked that you can pay off that credit card debt and buy a new mattress to replace the 14 year old one you brought from your childhood bedroom.  (seriously, you probably need a new mattress).  Now, if you are calling the doctor and telling him to pull the plug on the way to the Mercedes dealership, well, THAT might mean you have some issues.  But receiving some financial windfall is going to cause a positive emotional reaction.  It just is.
But, while the emotions are normal, acceptable and human, they should be under control before acting on any inherited money, for any number of reasons.  Here is a synopsis of what I tell clients who need a game plan for an inheritance:
Go Slow
Unless the inheritance is an ice sculpture in Houston in August, you more than likely should be in zero rush to do anything with it. Even if you owe high interest rate credit card debt, the savings you will gain on paying that off 30 days earlier is not worth the peace of mind you will gain by stopping and considering all of your options.  And, unless you have a working knowledge of the will, you might be in for a happy surprise when you find out she is the 168th largest investor in Facebook or a rude awaking when you see that 98% of her wealth is going to that shady cat rescue place outside of town.
Be Mindful
- We try to avoid buzzwords @MarklandFinancial because so much of what you should do with your money is simple and basic.  (Save.  Invest.  Don’t spend too much.  if you just followed those 6 words, you would be in good shape.)  But mindfulness is a universally positive trait that we should all aspire to have and is so useful in so many parts of our lives (gets off his soapbox, puts it away, and gets back to the topic at hand).  When dealing with an inheritance, this is usually a once in a lifetime event (not many people get 15 of the things, you know?) and it can be a game changer, for you (and others).  You want to make the most of this so consider the following before acting:
The person who you are inheriting from- what would bring them joy to see you do with the inheritance?  Would they be excited that you and 5 buddies went to Vegas for a week?  Or would that rather see it in your son’s college fund?  No judgement here; maybe Granny was a partier who loved a good foam party at the Wynn and hated kids.  Just thinking about what they would want will help you make a good decision.  They also could have loved those damn cats, so maybe a small donation to that shady cat place would be a good idea after all.
The people around you- maybe your sister’s kid could use a car repair or your favorite babysitter growing up just started a GoFundMe to move to Japan.  Much of our happiness can come from making others happy; before you pull the trigger on your third car, take a little time to see if you would actually be happier helping someone else out.
Your legacy- Maybe you are inheriting land, an expensive watch, or a beach house on Cape Cod.  Sure, you could sell those, take the money, and do whatever you want.  But you should also consider if you want little Harry to be an 8th generation rancher, if you want Joe wearing grandpa’s Rolex when he takes the Oath of Office as the POTUS, or if you want your grands to enjoy the beach house you spent your summers at.  Sometimes, inheritances are not received, they are loaned, until you in turn will loan them to your children.  Just something to think about.
Your personal needs- Paying off debt, socking it away for retirement (maybe a nicer one now!), or investing it in education, home repairs, that new mattress are always smart options that you should fund with any windfall.  Just make sure that, as you send that check off to the credit card company, you say a silent thank you and PROMISE YOU WILL NEVER RACK UP CREDIT CARD DEBT AGAIN!!!!
Your personal wants-Okay, once you have thought about all of this, this is the fun part.  Jetski?  Sure.  Gold chain?  What is this, the Jersey Shore?  But whatever.   Have some fun with it, of course!
Get Help
If your inheritance is a 2007 Land Cruiser with 145k miles on it, $6,000 in cash, and a crusty old dog named Karl that coughs a lot, you probably don’t need a lot of help deciding.  But if you get some serious cash, stocks and bonds, or property, you ABSOLUTELY NEED a non involved person to talk with.  Talking with your wife could cause friction when you are resistant to putting Johnny’s college fund as the first priority, while OF COURSE your buddy Kevin wants you to put in that garage bar that you have been talking about for years.  Heck, even the priest might hit you up for a donation for the new parish hall.  Everyone has an angle, whether they realize it or not.  We recommend you call us (shameless plug) but it is critical you have someone you can trust who will give you honest feedback that DOES NOT AFFECT THEM.  (You spend 3 hours with us, you pay us our fee, and we could care less what you do with the money. Can Aunt Carla say that?  I did not think so).  An impartial, un-involved party is critical to helping you talk out your ideas without judgement (of course you can consider catching a flight to the Caymans and abandoning your family, just please Venmo us our fee before your flight) and without the ability to benefit from your decisions.  This advisor can help you flesh out your plans, consider all of your options and help you craft a narrative about your decisions so that you are comfortable communicating and acting up them (I guess you could pay the advisor to tell Tammy she is NOT getting the china, but that feels like a you job).  And, while any plan you put in place could involve buying stocks or mutual funds (which is a smart decision), we highly recommend not asking your broker what to do.  If they get paid based on your investments (and they do), your ONLY POSSIBLE OPTION WILL BE TO BUY THE NEWEST ETF.  You will have time to go to them, after you determine how much you should invest and then let them take it from there.  Make sense?
Reach out to MarklandFinancial.com if you or anyone you know needs help, either due to a recent or a pending inheritence concern.

I went to sign up for venmo so I could send money to a friend who’s having a hard time and they tried to push this “plaid” service to connect my bank account instead of the slower traditional way. Using plaid is... literally handing your full banking credentials over to a third party like. I cringed, viscerally, and exclaimed out loud, “Oh FUCK no” when I saw that.
Like. Oh my god that’s insane to do that. Would you give your bank info and passwords and pin numbers to a stranger who offered to go get you money out of the ATM for you to save you some time just because he wore a nice suit and said “u can trust me, some of ur friends let me do this for them”?????? NO!!!!! YOU WOULD NOT!!!!!
I know it’s convenient and all but what the fuck. Don’t do that, please don’t do that. “encrypted” lmao it is NOT secure as that sounds and when plaid inevitably gets hacked, people are going to lose EVERYTHING. Even if it’s not straight up bank account theft, your identity can be stolen so many ways with that info that you’ll be playing catchup for decades trying to undo that shizz. I can’t believe this is venmo’s “recommended” option. Never. NEVER. Give your personal credentials out like that to ANYONE.
