When I was growing up, we watched Voyage of the Mimi in 5th grade. And to experience the whole whale watching thing—our class went on one for a school field trip.
Back then, the route we had taken would’ve been for the dolphin watching tours they do now during the summer months. I dunno why I remember that little tidbitbut we definitely didn’t see any whales! Also, I burnt my tongue on some hot cocoa 😂
After almost 30 years, I finally went back on that same boat tour (with a coworker, her spouse, and my brother). And it was pretty awesome; something I’ve never seen or heard on nature shows is how humpback whales come up to the surface to relieve themselves! I saw legit whale poop (scroll right over on Instagram and you’ll see a nice shade of brown in the water 😅).

Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus)
taken off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes, California
status: endangered (source: NOAA fisheries)
These whales are nicknamed the greyhounds of the sea for their speed! They can reach 29 miles per hour in short bursts but cruise at speeds not too much lower than that. Quite impressive when you consider they're also the second largest whale able to reach lengths around 80 feet!

" The Bodygard " //© Alex Pham
This black and white whale accompanying the mother and baby is an “escort”. Escorts have a funny role in Humpback society. They are not the fathers of the calves. Instead, they are (usually) other males who are hanging around for the chance to potentially mate with the female. The “good” escorts can play a protective role, keeping the calf and mum safe from predators like Orcas or False Killer Whales. The “bad” ones may actually harass the female and disrupt the calf’s nursing in their zeal to try to mate. As far as I can tell, our man here is being an upstanding gentleman. The thing I am most fascinated by though are the reports that there are occasional female escorts as well. I would love to find out more about how frequent this is and why it occurs. Why would other female Humpbacks do this? Please let me know if anyone has insights!

The mesmerizing beauty of killer whales.

Killer whales are the largest representatives of the dolphin family. Sometimes killer whales reach a length of 10 meters and a weight of 6-7 tons. The teeth of killer whales grow up to 11-13 centimeters in length. The color of the killer whale is represented by two colors, that is, black and white. Her throat and belly are painted white, and her sides and back are black. In the North Pacific Ocean you can find albino killer whales and melanistic (completely black) killer whales, but this is already a consequence of a genetic deviation.
Killer whales are apex predators, meaning they are not hunted by any animal in the wild. They can even hunt large whales and sharks. An adult requires 100-150 kilograms of food per day. Killer whales are sometimes called "sea wolves" because they prefer to hunt in groups, like packs of wolves. Killer whales have their own “language,” and individuals from different groups have their own dialect, if you can call it that, the range of sounds that they exchange to communicate. Killer whales are social animals. They prefer to coexist in small groups connected by family ties. Sometimes the number of killer whale groups can reach 40-50 individuals.
Killer whales live in all oceans and in most seas from the equator to the poles, in waters of different temperatures. And sticks to the 800m range. from the shore. Killer whales can also reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. At the same time, the killer whale’s heart beats half as often underwater as on the surface. The average lifespan of these amazing creatures is from 50 to 60 years.
