New Eyes on Old Films

Our Georgia Center Film & Videotape Collection includes a set of films made under the auspices of the Southeast Youth-Film Laboratory, a project created by Hill Bermont, who headed the film unit at the Georgia Center/WGTV for many years. Funding for these films was provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).  Film titles include: May You Go With Smiles, These Items On Sale, Mike & Sadie, Blue, Red, Impression, Ring Beep, Please Stand By...We Have Temporarily Lost Our Mind, Gold, Crying’s Not For Me, and Eye On You.

While processing some additions of films to the collection, we discovered this article, being a history of SYFL and a review of some of the films, titled “UNIVERSITY TV LAYS AN EGG IN SYFL”:

John English (a filmmaker himself) made this review assignment part of a critical writing course in journalism, so the article covers a number of aspects of the films, the program, the funding, and investigates the use of the funding for such films.

Hey! I’m going to be on the tele! Again!

HGTV is coming to Chicago to film people making neato crafts for their new show, “Crafters Coast To Coast,” and guess who they called to show how faerie wings are made? Yep.

So, in November, there will be a crew in my living room filming the step-by-step production of wingies. I’m gonna have Willow running around the house in some teensie wings too. She won’t hate me, I swear.

There’s a chance I might be showing how to make corsets as well, not yet certain of that, might be too complex for one segment…

ps I don’t have scans of Interview because I gave my copy to BF’s mom, so I’m depending on fLee to scan it in.

“The Doctor Reports” was a public service television series in which Dr. James Watt, Director of the Division of International Health, U.S. Public Health Service, covered subjects related to recent medical research, diseases, and public health topics.  According to the AAPB, these 5-minute programs were originally produced by WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., then sent to NET stations on permanent loan for use as filler material.  NET Records at the Wisconsin Historical Society include papers about this program.

These cans are part of our Georgia Center Film & Videotape Collection, within which programs created by the Georgia Center film crew and the original WGTV public television station (signed on in 1960) and acquired films shown by the station, are housed.  These 1963 programs are on “Drugs and Cancer”, “Strokes”, and “Osteoporosis.” A number of programs that aired on WGTV came here from WTTW in Chicago.

WXGA written on the can label refers to an early public television station in Waycross (W - X), Georgia (GA), which may have been where this program first aired. WXGA first aired programming in late 1961 after WETV (Atlanta) and WGTV (Athens), and was founded by Georgia’s state board of education. In 1965, stations were consolidated under Georgia Educational Television, now known as GPB.

What we really appreciated seeing is that these programs were produced by Sophie Altman, (1913-2008) who created the long-running tv school kids’ quiz show, “It’s Academic” and was a producer on the original “Meet the Press.” See her NYT obituary for more on this talented producer.  

And, finally, we are pleased to find out that Dr. Watt (1911-1995) was a native of Thomasville, Georgia.  His biography, below, is from the 1978 NIH Almanac accessed through GoogleBooks.
