Calibreon Expansion #15 - Gryphon

Somewhat lore, mostly speculative thought about my choices in deign under the cut.

Gryphon are a species of Calibreon that have always remained semi-nebulous in their existence. Thinking about Gryphon as any large massive species never seemed to work because there in my mind wouldn't be enough food to sustain them where I imagined they'd be so I settled for something simpler and more compact. 

These medium-sized creatures can be found in northern Talis. Though by nature they are wild, it is possible to tame one for work in hunting results may vary on workmanship with one. They're at largest around the size of an average bobcat and form groups or prides of around 5-8 individuals. While they can fly it's not very long-distance and is ideal for short burst hunts and roosting at night.

Weyr are one of the few species to have constant run-ins with Gryphon. While they won't actively hunt one another sometimes Gryphon will follow a Weyr hunting party and try to snipe their catch from them- typically interactions never get more violent than this. Some Weyr are even clever (or brave) enough to try and tame a Gryphon much like someone would a hawk or eagle for Falconry practices. Gryphon are very tempermental however and may not listen the best- but some have managed.

Gryphon anatomically resembles hawks, smaller eagles, and puma or bobcats. Though the species aren't one-to-one aesthetically pieces of the design influence their colors. They have feather-like "ears" like a Great Horned Owl which they use expressively to communicate silently to one another. They have sharp beaks and teeth- though like other birds they lack the ability to chew so they swallow food in whole chunks. 

Their diet mainly consists of but is not limited to small mammals such as deer, sheep, or with group efforts Elk or Bovine. They have also been known to eat fish, insects, birds, turkey and in rare instances they may brave going after wild hog.

At the start of a long Interval, a virulent disease breaks out among dragonkin. While three of every four infected whers eventually recover, the disease is fatal for dragons and flits without exception. Highly contagious and able to be carried between dragonkin by humans too, quarantine is entirely ineffective. It soon becomes clear that dragons will imminently go extinct, and a radical plan is devised to avert this. Three gravid queens will go forward in time, laying there eggs in a time when, it is hoped, the disease will have died out.

With eggs on the sands, people of all walks of life flock to Nerat to get a chance at the eggs, for better or worse. What final chance with the eggs give the world? It's just a matter of time to find out, when the eggs hatch...

Dinodragon of the day -- this Pern dragon is a Realta special: an Obsidian! Obsidian's have the ability to light up a room with bioluminescence color.

This particular dragon was based on the archaeopteryx and she's one fun nightlight.

P.S. Also my first time animating my art and making a gif. Simple, I know, but we all gotta start somewhere.

Meraki's Tenth Clutching

Three flights for three clutches on Meraki's volcanic black sands, the tenth dragon hatching cycle has begun for an average of two hatchings per year for the past five years! This cycle features the maiden flights of two (more!) Deimos Class dragons alongside Meraki's oldest clutcher, Green Azaneth.

Remember how Deimos was lousy with uteruses? These mark the third and fourth of Deimos' fifteen dragons to lay clutches on Meraki's sands, with at last two more slated to join them someday.

Each Flight was over twenty individual Chasers, with the flights being run according to the clutching dragon player's preferences; Seirye's Gold Zemirath was two rounds of posts and as many entries as you preferred, every color welcome (though she later realized Zemirath wouldn't choose a Bronze,) with the player choosing based on who she believed impressed Zemirath the most. Boop's Garnet Etiath was one round, one week, metallic males only, winner based on Vibes alone. BumbleBoarBee's Green Azaneth was weighted RNG, with points awarded for various qualities both OOC and IC, roundless, fourteen days allotted to post.

Zemirath chose Black Eoth, Wingleader of Zenith Wing, played by Pan, because his arrogance and self-certainty, his ferocity and his confidence, impressed her! Etiath chose Garnet* Rielth, played by Merry, because he was a gentleman and the post made Boop laugh! Azaneth chose Bronze Ekinth, a site-hatched dragon from the Titania Clutch played by Bayfire, via wheel-spin for his temerity as the largest dragon in the Flight, his cleverness in responding to an IC attack by another dragon, and her desire to 'step on him'!

Mothers were varying hugenesses of Eggnant, and fathers, various shades of smug, contrite, and dignified.

Misty, as usual, absolutely slaughtered the clutch art; the anomalies on Azaneth, the scars on Eoth, the billions of freckles on Etiath's ass - tres bien!

Coming up next: the touching, which on Meraki has two parts. The actual Touching involves what is essentially a prompt of impressions one gets from each egg, and then Meraki has a part two where Candidates have an overnight in the Stands, and many will share a dream with one of the dragons still in the eggs. These are written by Staff and contain clues as to what is in the eggs, who might be Impressing them, and what the dragon is actually like.

We'll look forward to a great deal more creativity from members and staff alike as we approach this eventful Tenth hatching!

The onyx stopped then, in front of a trembling teenager, no more than a child that stared him down with a fury. A challenge in their eyes as they met the red gaze, that turned into a rainbow swirl and then a calm blue "Ah, there's a spark in there yet. Come, your Lupputh is tired of these ashes" (originally written + Luppuths design by @/galacticteeth ! ) idk what it was about this song that made me think of Lucend and Lupputh's impression BUT it did and so i did a lil comic for it ! also i wouldve done the second request but i was struggling for thoughts on that one.

So firelizards are a coastal species, that bury their eggs along beaches. Which means logically dragonkin should need a decent amount of humidity for successful incubation of clutches.

Please picture for me, people half burying tubs of water in the Hatching Sands in a bid to keep the humidity where the eggs need it.
