“Until the killing of black men, black mothers’ sons, becomes as important to the rest of the country as the killing of a white mother’s son, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until this happens.” #EllaBaker, 1964. #fathersday2017 #blacklivesmatter #philandocastile #policethepolice #xicanaforblacklives #wewhobelieveinfreedom #wecannotrest (at North Las Vegas, Nevada) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7DCtJXBtNn/?igshid=wcai1xfa5yrd

As I said yesterday, the #TinyDeskContest closes on 1/29, so I'm taking the next few days to give you some insight into some of the things in my video you might not have noticed. Today's tidbit is about the pocket constitution on the desk.
Most of the men I love most in this world -- my dad, my uncles, my cousins who are more like brothers to me than cousins -- are either active duty or retired military (spanning every branch). And don't even get me started on the incredible women in my life who have served. As a black-American who knows the history of black soldiers serving faithfully while being denied many of the rights and freedoms they were fighting to protect, as a lesbian-American who knows the history of LGBT soldiers who were told they were only good enough to serve in silence it's no wonder Mr. Khizr Khan's speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention resonated so deeply with me.
The convention came just months after the then Republican candidate (and now president) vowed to institute a Muslim ban. Mr. Khan's son, U.S. Army Capt. Humayun S. M. Khan, was a Muslim-American who died while serving in Iraq in 2004. Mr. Khan said, “If it was up to Donald Trump, [my son] never would have been in America.” Mr. Khan, who is a lawyer, took out his pocket copy of the Constitution and asked, “Have you even read the United States Constitution? Look for the words ‘liberty’ and ‘equal protection of law.’”
As our preamble dictates, “We the People" -- this nation of immigrants (some by choice, some by force) -- should constantly be striving to form a more perfect Union, to establish Justice, and to insure domestic Tranquility. This is who are. This is what makes us great. https://youtu.be/8ACy_xH94Ao
