Since this post is going around again (4 years later), I want to update some important information.
Going forward you should be looking at a wetbulb index map. What is that?
It estimates the effect of temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation on humans using a combination of temperatures from three thermometers:
A Wet bulb measures the temperature read by a thermometer covered in a wet cloth. As water evaporates from the cloth, evaporation cools the thermometer. This mirrors how the human body cools itself with sweat.
Even heat-adapted people cannot carry out normal outdoor activities past a wet-bulb temperature of 32 °C (90 °F), equivalent to a heat index of 55 °C (131 °F). A reading of 35 °C (95 °F) – equivalent to a heat index of 71 °C (160 °F) – is considered the theoretical human survivability limit for up to six hours of exposure.
Recently parts of Texas have been in the deadly range when looking at the wetbulb temperature.
Dangerous Heat Levels in Eastern US
Reminder to stay inside today if possible. If you don't have AC please go to a cooling center. The heat combined with the humidity make it very dangerous. If you have asthma please stay inside. Also keep your fur friends inside and check on cattle for signs of distress.

The headline-grabbing 46°C recently experienced by Britain's neighbours in France is indeed unusual, but still falls short of the 50°C recorded in India earlier this summer, and is somewhat temperate relative to the 54°C (129°F) confirmed for both Pakistan (in 2017) and Kuwait (in 2016). People in these hotter climates are better at coping with high temperatures, yet such heat still kills.
Deadly heatwaves are, of course, no stranger to Europeans. The infamous 2003 event claimed as many as 70,000 lives, and 2010 saw more than 50,000 fatalities in western Russia. Fortunately, lessons were learned and authorities are now much better prepared when heat-health alerts are issued.
When the air temperature exceeds 35°C, the body relies on the evaporation of water – mainly through sweating – to keep core temperature at a safe level. This system works until the "wetbulb" temperature reaches 35°C. The wetbulb temperature includes the cooling effect of water evaporating from the thermometer, and so is normally much lower than the normal ("drybulb") temperature reported in weather forecasts.

Re number 7: traditional Muslim clothing (abayas etc) is designed for the heat--it's loose and billowy and the only thing that has changed is that a LOT of the ready-made stuff is polyester, which is very very bad and hot. Only natural fibers are going to keep you cool--linen is best, followed by cotton and lastly silk.
Georgette, chiffon, and other commonly-used fabrics in ready-made muslim clothing is made of plastic fiber and is not going to keep you cool. But the design of those clothings is very cool if made with linen or cotton, which are traditionally the fibers they were made of.
A niqab (face veil with slit) or burqa (veil without slit) is a very good design to make your covid mask. What I do with my niqab is
cut a rectangle of interfacing
2. iron it to some quilting cotton that is a little bigger than it
3. fold the edges of the cotton over the interfacing to seal it, sew that quickly on a machine if you have one, use a whipstitch if you're sewing by hand.
4. then hand-whipstitch it, cotton facing my face, to the inside bottom edge of the eye-slit of my niqab.
If you want to, you can also sandwich the interfacing with a layer of quilting cotton on each side, but this is the quick and dirty version that has the minimum amount of layers you need.
That gives you the 2 layers of woven 1 layer of nonwoven that it takes to make a safe facemask, and the niqab design works to shield your face enough to work as an N95 mask that also allows you to breathe and stay cool a lot better than a western-style mask!
I tried to make a pattern to sew my own niqab out of the ones I bought from this website, but it proved a little beyond my ability right now, mostly due to not having enough space to lay everything out, and the niqab not being made of cooperative fabric. (If anyone reading this has a good pattern for a niqab please send me an ask!)
Remember to apply sunblock every hour, and 15 minutes before going into the sun. If you hate sunblock, wear a hat or carry a parasol. Remember that the sun can get through certain fabrics, like gauze, and can sunburn your head very easily if you have a buzzcut.
You should wear a hat regardless of what you're doing with sunblock, actually. Wear a hat or carry a parasol.
Remember that past a certain temperature, sweating or getting wet will actually heat you up faster. That's wetbulb temperature, meaning it's so humid out that nothing is evaporating and the heat will just literally boil you alive.
If there is a UV index highter than 8, do not go into direct sunlight, you will die of exposure very quickly. Stay indoors as much as possible until the sun goes down.
Between 10 and 2 are the most dangerously sunny parts of the day if you're in the sunbelt, 12 and 4 for those north of it.
Dry heat is what humans were made to deal with; humidity is not something our bodies are adapted to, as we evolved in the savannah.
For all of the northerners that stood up for Texas during our freeze and said, "Don't make fun of them, they've never dealt with this before. Their infrastructure isn't made for snow and freezing."
This one is for you.
Where I live 108°F with 80% humidity with no wind is normal.
Pacific North West is dealing historic best waves 35-40°C or 95-105°F.
First of all. Don't make fun of them for bitching about the heat. Just like Texas isn't built for a freeze and our pipes burst, Pacific North West isn't built for heat and a lot of their homes don't have AC.
If you live somewhere with a high humidity like 80+ HUMIDITY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. The "humidity makes it feel cooler" is a lie once it gets beyond a point.
If you live somewhere with a lower humidity, misters are nice to cool off outside.
Once you get over 90°F (32°C) a fan will not help you. It's just pushing around hot air. (I mean if you can't afford a small AC unit because they're expensive as hell, by all means a fan is better than nothing).
If you have pets, those portable AC units aren't safe. If your pets destroy the outtake thing, it'll leak CO2. Window units are safer.
Window AC units will let mosquitoes or other small bugs in. Sucks, but that's life.
Now is not the time to me modest. If you have to cover for religious reasons, by all means. If you don't, I've seen people wear short shorts and a swim top. It's not trashy if it keeps you from getting heat stroke.
If you do have to cover up for religious reasons, look for elephant pants or something similar. They're made with a breathable material.
Shade is better than no shade, but that shit it just diet sun after some point. Don't think shade will save you from heat stroke.
I know the "drink your water" is a fun meme now, but if you're sweating excessively you need electrolytes. Drink Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialite PLEASE. I don't care if you're fucking sitting in one spot all day. That shit WILL save you from heat stroke.
Most importantly. RESEARCH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAT STROKE AND HEAT EXHAUSTION PLEASE!
If you're diabetic and can't drink Gatorade, mix water, fruit juice, and either lite salt or pink salt
If you can afford it, cover windows with thick curtains to insulate the house
If you have tile floors, lay on them with skin to tile contact. If you don't, laying your head on cool counters works too.
If the temperature where you're at is hotter than your body temperature, don't wear heat wicking clothing. Moisture wicking is safe though.
Check your medication labels. Many make you more susceptible to sun and heat
-Room temperature water will get into your body faster. This is something I learned doing marching band in high summer in Georgia, and it saved all of our asses. Sip it, don't gulp it, especially if you're getting into the red; same goes for whatever fluid you're drinking. And just in general drink during the day.
-If you are moving from an air conditioned space to an un-air conditioned space, if at all possible try to make the shift gradual. When my dad and I were working outside and in un-ac houses a few years ago, he'd turn the air down to low in the truck about ten-fifteen minutes before we got where we were going. This way your body doesn't go from low low temps to high temps. S'bad for you.
-If you can, keep your lights off during the day. Light bulbs may not generate a lot of heat, but the difference is noticeable when it gets hot enough. I literally only turn my bedroom light on in the evening when it gets too dark.
Don't be afraid to just like... pour water on yourself if you need to. The evaporation will cool you off.
Put your hand to the cement for 15 seconds. If you can't handle the heat, it'll burn your dog's paws. Don't let them walk on it.
Dogs with flat faces are more prone to heat stroke. Don't leave them out unsupervised.
Frozen fruit is delicious in water.
Wet/Cold hat/handkerchief on your head/neck will help you stay cool.
Pickle juice is great for electrolytes! You can even make pickle juice Popsicles!
Heat exhaustion is more, "drink water and get you cooled off." Heat stroke is more "Oh my god call 911."
Image Description provided by @loveize
[Image description: an infographic showing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The graphic is labeled "Heat Dangers: First Warning." Signs of heat exhaustion: faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, cool, pale, clammy skin, rapid, weak pulse, muscle cramps. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat exhaustion, get to a cool, air-conditioned place, drink water if conscious, and take a cool shower or use cold compress. Signs of heat stroke: throbbing headache, no sweating, red, hot, dry skin, rapid, strong pulse, may lose consciousness. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat stroke, call 911. Be safe.

Taking climate change bullshit out of it for minute, to be fair the wetbulb temp is not the same as the heat index. Wet bulb temp is measured differently and refers to the lowest possible temp that can be achieved by evaporation alone. Meaning that at a wetbulb temp of 94, the evaporation of your sweat will only lower your skin temp to 94. A wetbulb temp of 94 is equivalent to a heat index of about 160.

I don't think they really believe 94 is extreme. They are just lying to the dumb fucking sheep, who lap it all up!

current temperature in dallas: 102f / 39c
wetbulb globe temperature rating says people working in direct sunlight will experience stress after thirty minutes and should be taking at least thirty minutes of breaks in the shade every hour
yeah nobody's going to be doing that for farm and construction workers around here
this time last year the lege killed yet another bill to install air conditioning in state prisons
about a third of people incarcerated by texas have air conditioning
people will die and the government won't tell us how many

It's 5:34 AM, I'm a quarter of the way into The Ministry for the Future now & it's still good! Taking a break now to think about what I've read. Most of the info or concepts are not new to me but I've also last talked to my therapist about climate change like two sessions ago, without much positive resolution, so just on the personal level reflecting on the hope in here may be useful. It's much less viscerally upsetting than the wetbulb heatwave of the first chapter tho it delves into ramifications, both personal, political and for int'l climate politics (perhaps I may miss my own visceral horror at the future being reflected slightly)
Also I really appreciate the collage-esque writing style. The chapters are really short and alternate between sections from a range of characters to short almost-notes on various concepts

High-pressure misting systems increase the efficiency of industrial air-cooled chillers.
Adiabatic pre-cooling misting systems increase the operational efficiency of any air-cooled chillers while also saving the operational cost by lowering the incoming air temperature on the condenser coils & hence reducing the chiller power substantially.
Air-cooled Chiller performance reduces drastically in hot & dry climatic conditions resulting in reduction in Chiller Cooling capacity by 15-20% at peak conditions, while power consumption increases by upto 38%. When the temperature of the "ambient air" outside weather surpasses 30° C, HVAC equipment works harder to meet the cooling demand of a building.
The efficiency of air-cooled chillers is significantly increased when a mist fogging system is used because the adiabatic pre-cooling system decreases the air temperature entering the condensers. Our adiabatic pre-cooling misting systems help to reduce the burden on the condensers by lowering the unit's head pressure, amps drawn, and cycle time, allowing you to avoid poor performance and unexpected shutdowns.
Adiabatic Pre-cooled Misting System is designed for any Hot & Dry Climatic Locations
A sustained technology like Intelligent Adiabatic Cooling System is ergonomically engineered to help a customer overcome the operational challenges and yet delivering the best of the chiller performance. Not only that, but because your HVAC equipment is no longer under significant strain & the comfort levels within the facility is increased.
Advantages of an Adiabatic Pre-cooling System:
Designed to improve efficiency over design by upto 38% on Air cooled Chillers by providing fine mist technology (5-30 Micron) with High Pressure Pumps designed at 70-120 Bar Pressure.

Here’s the article: https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/17/world/siberia-craters-arctic-climate-change-scn/index.html
I know we’re meming but giant holes opening in the permafrost means previously trapped methane gas is being released into the atmosphere. 1 ton of methane is equivalent to 25 tons of CO2 in terms of its ability to entrap heat. This is part of the runaway effect of climate change - eventually we cross certain boundaries and we won’t be able to keep heating below degrees of Celsius. Methane being released like this while keeping capitalism and only slightly reducing CO2 output is going to make us cross the +4 degree C boundary which is a level at which global human civilization will not be possible and coastal areas will be washed away and anywhere between the tropics reaches wetbulb humidity and temperature (no go zones for most of the year, if you do you’ll die in hours). Marx wrote that we’ll either transcend capitalism into a socialist mode of production or we’ll suffer "the common ruin of the contending classes.” Or more succinctly, socialism or barbarism.
We have 9 years left to make a global change.

Joe’s Weather World: The 5 day heat wave starts (WED-7/17)
Good morning…aside from potentially some scattered storms coming through parts of the area, mainly north of I-70 later this morning…the forecast is a hot and humid one over the next 5 days. The heat wave though won’t have true staying power though as a decent for late July cold front comes into the area on Sunday and sweeps the heat south and allows some relief to move into the area for next week.
The heat coming into the area isn’t unusual. We’re not coming into the hottest time of the year…we probably won’t hit 100° (officially at KCI) and the heat index values will be around 105° (give or take). So basically your typical KC heat wave. Again though it will break. For as much confidence as I had that the heat would build during the forecasts last week…I have as much confidence that the heat will break Sunday into Monday.
Forecast:
Today: Isolated storms are possible later this morning as some activity tracks out of KS…we’ll see how long they hold together this morning. Turning hot and humid later this afternoon with highs into the mid 90s. Heat index values will be in the 100-105° range. Winds will be increasing this afternoon as well.
Tonight: Fair and warm with lows 75-80°
Thursday-Saturday: Mostly sunny with highs 95-100°. Heat index values 100-110°
Sunday: Storm chances will be increasing…the timing of the cold front will determine the highs. Near 95° is likely with storms in the evening possible for some.
Discussion:
So in a twitter poll I did last night…I asked you what you wanted me to talk about more…did you mind the heat index numbers or the wind chill values…
OK tweeps…poll time…would you rather be hearing about the high heat index values or the low wind chill values #fox4kc jl
— Fox 4 Weather KC (@fox4wx) July 17, 2019
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
As of this morning 54% voted in favor of the heat index.
Well we’ll be talking a lot about that aspect of the forecast…
The heat index is a way to figure the risk of heat exhaustion/stress that the body endures when humidity is factored in. Humidity is important because the lower the humidity the better the body can cool down when you sweat. For example…in the desert IF you get out of a pool…you feel cool because the water evaporates off you…
When the humidity is high that evaporation isn’t as prevalent…so the body stays warmer.

How do you find out the humidity? Go here for the latest information.
Here are the temperatures/dew points/humidity values each hour.
There is actually a better way to determine how the heat affects a person…it takes into account winds and sunshine (which the heat index scale does not)…it’s called the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature.
You have to click on KC, or whereever, to get the values…but more goes into this as it was created with additional factors…from the web page…
“The WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a measure of the heat stress in direct sunlight, which takes into account: temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover (solar radiation). This differs from the heat index, which takes into consideration temperature and humidity and is calculated for shady areas. If you work or exercise in direct sunlight, this is a good element to monitor. Military agencies, OSHA and many nations use the WBGT as a guide to managing workload in direct sunlight.”
Here you go…
About the only hope today for rain comes from a weak disturbance coming through KS…I talked about this last night and mentioned the risk of some isolated activity till about lunch or so…we’ll see how long this stuff lasts…here is the radar from Pleasant Hill though.
The bust potential to the forecast is the clouds coming our way this morning and how long they linger into the afternoon.
From there though we’re off to the races from a temperature standpoint through Saturday.
The rain won’t be much IF you get anything today.
The next chance will come on Sunday into Sunday night. That will be connected with the cooler air that will flow into the region later Sunday into Monday.
The heat wave generator will be sliding towards the Rockies…and the 4 corners region. This means that we go back into NW or NNW flow aloft…allowing somewhat cooler air to slide through the upper Midwest and the Great Lakes…we get to partake in that cooler air next week
From a rain standpoint…well there should be at least something out there (later this morning and Sunday PM/night) but the amounts right now aren’t too overwhelming.
The ensembles give us about 1″ of rain over the next 15 days or so..the operational EURO gives us less than that. Not the greatest look. The issue with next week is that NW flow could bring some weak disturbances southwards…so hopefully we can get something from that the the models aren’t taking into account. We’ll see about that.
That’s it for today…stay cool and hope that maybe the clouds/showers trying to get here help us out this afternoon.
Our feature photo comes from Brittany Limback from the big storms last week out towards Alma, MO
