Westward Ho! Sunset
I didn’t have any phojo this morning to go out and make pictures so instead I took a look through the archive to clear up some of the old junk. Imagine my surprise when I came across this little gem from 2020 that I had completely ignored up until now. Just a tiny bit of editing to remove a dust spot and brighten the whites and it’s come up nicely. I really like the hint of pebbles in the…

Lost Word Of The Day (13)
to gnathonise - to toady or flatter #lostwords #obscurewords #logophilia
How much has the English language lost as a result in the decline in the familiarity with the classical literature of Ancient Greece and Rome? I began musing on this when I came across the verb gathonise which was used particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries to describe the actions a toady or someone who excels in the art of flattery. Gnatho was the name of a character in Eunuchus, a play…

My fave Shakespearean expression is "Westward ho!"
It's clearly about the American West in the 1800s. So how the f*ck did Shakespeare come up with the expression in England 200 years earlier? He must've been a time traveler! 😏😏
practically every time i have a line of poetry stuck in my head i look it up and it’s from shakespeare. i read a lot, and there are tons of writers that i love way more than him. but i never passively memorize their lines. in fact, i struggle to actively memorize their lines.
i have studied/read many of his works (bc he’s one of the most important english writers ever & i think every english writer can learn from him!) but i wouldn’t even say i’m that big of a fan, and i don’t think i’ve actively tried to memorize much of his work aside from two or three monologues. it just continuously stuns me that so many of shakespeare’s expressions are so unforgettable. it’s no wonder he created so many common sayings, but exactly HOW did he do it? he was an actor and a playwright, so writing with the intention of memorization was apt for him, but even lines from his sonnets are just so effortlessly memorable! he just constantly blows my mind.

Have some more Beren-Lúthien-Finrod from @allthatglittersisnotgoldrush! I decided to finally get my design ideas for Beren and Lúthien down, and I ended up including Finrod too, just to complete the trio of portraits loll XDD
I tried to keep Beren’s clothing simple; it’s very loosely inspired by the Pacific Northwest tribes, and I also looked at a bunch of vintage photo portraits of Indigenous peoples to get a general feel for that time. And I couldn’t help but include Beren’s braids again ^^;; I imagine the first painting is after he’s grown his hair out, so Finrod offers to braid it for him (whereas the second painting is during his time in Doriath)!
For Lúthien’s Spanish-inspired dress, I remembered this line from Tolkien: “He peered between the hemlock leaves / And saw in wonder flowers of gold / Upon her mantle and her sleeves ...” So I figured that either Melian or Lúthien could’ve sewn the flowers on! One of these days I’ll give Lúthien a more Chinese-inspired design with some lovely gold flower patterns <333
Last is Finrod! I actually don’t have much to say about him loll But his vest is from Pharmakós, and his frock coat is just one for travelling that I imagine he wore on the way to Doriath XDD
#my favourite trio in the whole wide westward ho#beren and luthien are my otp in both this au and in canon#the finrod-beren friendship is my absolute favourite#and the new finrod-luthien dynamic leaves me wanting more of their interactions loll T_T#art#my art#tolkien#silmarillion#fanart#au#gold rush au#elves#eldar#noldor#sindar#edain#beren erchamion#luthien tinuviel#finrod felagund#beren and luthien#i imagine finrod had to scrounge around for some spare ribbons#or whatever they used for hair-ties back in the day XDD#or maybe sticks and frog found them?

Narated by Fess Parker who was a Disney Favorate, who portrayed Davy Crocket and Jeff York who was Mike Fink in Davy Crocket and Joe Crain in Andy Bernett. The Cast also included Iron Eyes Cody, who was later famous as the Indian with the tear in his eye, Iron Eyes made a career of portraying Indians, claiming to be a Cherokee when he was actually an Italian American actor. As is common they make the Pawnee Indians the Bad Guys, as was also done in Dances With Wolves, and Little Big Man, while in reality the Pawnee were so prayed upon by larger tribes like the Lakota and Cheyanne that they allied with the white settlers and often came to their rescue driving off attacks by the hostile Lakota. I remember seeing the film when i was a boy back in the 1950s. Back in thoes days TV and movies taught kids to be proud of their history and heritage.

Have these trash cans lost some weight? Slim-style cans were spotted outside the Westward Ho Trading Company shop in Disneyland's Frontierland. Unlike other slim cans spotted at WDW and Disneyland's Main Street, these aren't tampered at the top. // Disneyland Resort, Disneyland, Frontierland, Westward Ho Trading Company, 2022 [Source: Disneyland_On_Film.
