MOUNTAIN MAN IN THE MAKING
Jax Jepperson: Mountain Man In The Making
Author: SCOTTY V. CASPER
During the early days of America, people clustered together along the eastern seaboard, but after many years brave pioneers began venturing westward and each stop along the way was considered the Western Frontier. Then in 1764 American pioneers settled St. Louis on the Mississippi River, and it became the newest Western Frontier. Thirty years later Lewis and Clark’s expedition traveled all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Sunday Time Capsule Part 17: (Continued from last week) Margaret Emma Dotson’s Maternal Grandfather was Col. William Warren Caldwell. He was born in South Carolina December 18th, 1814. He was married to Piety Amanda McCuiston in Bedford County Tennessee in 1845. Col. Caldwell was a Confederate soldier and either was killed or died of fever on March 27th, 1864. Very little is known about him with exceptional some land record pertaining to plantations he owned during his life. His daughter, Sarah, (Maggie’s mother) was only 14 when he died. He died in Cross County Arkansas. We do not know if the tittle of Colonel was military or honorary. Dad that so little is documented.(To be continued next week). #parris #alexindia #alexindiapalace #1814 #margaret #colonel #1864 #coltarkansas #crosscounty #joseph #moore #confederacy #arkansas #death #orphan #confederate #dotson #westernfrontier #19thcentury #history #married #oldsouth #yellowfever #civilwar #southernbelle #dotson #wounded #caldwell #warren (at Wynne, Arkansas)

Sunday Time Capsule Part 16: (Continued from last week) We will pause from last week on our journey through the 1910’s, to go back and skim over some of Joseph’s wife’s history. This will give us a clearer understanding in the end. My maternal grandmother (Joseph’s wife) was Margaret Emma Dotson. She was born to Thomas Lorendo Dotson and Sarah Dotson on October 21, 1882. She had two younger brothers, James and John Dotson. Margret’s father died on October 1, 1888 - perhaps of scarlet fever or yellow fever. Margaret was only 5 years old when he died. Her mother was a midwife and soon married again. They lived in Colt Arkansas at the time. The county was Saint Francis. Margaret would come to despise her step father, and through history is only know to us in the family as “old Doctor Stewart, the reprobate”! The photo is of my grandmother Margaret Emma Dotson, taken in about 1890. Sunday Time Capsule Part 15: (Continued from last week). After John Thomas died, Joe buried himself in work. He farmed as much land as he could lease. In 1915 he won the prize as the “King of Cotton” in Tillman County. The country was doing well while Europe was sinking into War. Wilson promised to keep us out of War. The need for cotton was high in Europe, thus Joe turned bails of Cotton into barrels of cash. He then was approached by two gentlemen who he had come to know. One was Dr. Fuqua and the other was Peck Mathis. They all formed a partnership and began drilling for oil in “boomtown” Burkburnett Tx. The Texas Oil Boom was Here! The photo above is of the three partners when they formed Consumer Oil Company in 1916. Sunday Time Capsule Part 14: Last week we looked at John Thomas Moore, who died in 1914. The photo above is of the first four out of twelve to survive to old age. We will look at the others in later posts. But to recap, Joe and Maggie had 12 children during the course of their marriage. The first child, born in Arkansas in 1905 was a daughter who they named Geraldine Moore. When she was 6 months old she died of malaria. Then the next children came every two years. They were; Darrel 1906, Louise 1908, Clara 1910, Mary 1912... . The order on the photo is; Clara, Darrel, Mary and Louise. I knew them all quite well. At this point in 1913 Joe was still farming. Joe was especially hard on Darrell since he was is oldest living child and only son.It was important that Darrel have all the advantages that Joe was deprived of. But their relationship was always more like sand paper than silk. Louise was the parent helper, highly responsible and dependable through her life. Each went on to do great things and live wonderful adventures. When she was 6 months old she died of malaria. Then the next children came every two years. They were; Darrel 1906, Louise 1908, Clara 1910, Mary 1912... then on September 10, 1913 Maggie gave birth to their 6th child and second son. His name was John Thomas Moore. Named for his Uncle John Dotson, Maggie’s brother. A beautiful baby boy who was healthy and perfect. In preparation for his first birthday Maggie dressed him up and took him down to the photography studio to have his picture made. See photo above in this post. On the way home she noticed he was warm. Dr. Fuqua came to the house and diagnosed him with typhoid. A few days later the Doctor was standing with Maggie and Joe near his crib, where John was asking for water. The Doctor advised against giving him water. All of a sudden the baby fell over and stoped breathing. John Thomas Moore died on September 9th 1914, just one day shy of his first birthday. Sunday Time Capsule Part 11: (Continued from last week) my Maternal Grandparents, Joe and Maggie Moore, buried two relatives in 1905. As listed in last week's post, Joe's younger sister, Mary died of TB.The second tragedy which befell Joe and Maggie was the loss of there first child, Wilmath Geraldine Moore. The child was born Dec 15, 1904 and died of malaria on June 11, 1905. Maggie also came down with malaria as well. She came close to dying of the fever. Her Mother, Sarah Dotson who was a midwife, nursed her back to health. The Doctor advised Joe to take her to a dryer climate and away from humid areas. So they moved from Arkansas to Western Ok in late 1905. After living in a dug out for two years and farming the virgin soil, they built a farm house. It is pictured above along with there children which will be discussed in future posts. The other photo is of the nearest town of Frederick Ok, where they would move to in 1919. Sunday Time Capsule Part 8: (Continued from last week) my Maternal Grandfather- Joseph DeMossie Moore grew to the age of 17 and went to work for a general store in Whin, Arkansas. He was sent to the Dotson home to deliver some goods. As he looked through the glass in the front door he saw the reflection of a beautiful woman he had never met before. Her name was Margaret Emma Dotson. She was playing a pump organ which had a mirror set into its front panel. When he met with his friends later that day he told them that she was the one he planned to marry. His friends laughed and told him he was crazy. They told him he had no chance with her, as she was considered the belle of the county. He had no farm nor any capital, therefor he stood no chance with Miss Dotson. But he was persistent and in 1904 they were married. The photo is of my grandmother Margaret Emma Dotson, taken in 1899.
