Ardab Mutiyaran
How did this film help women empowerment amongst Punjabi women?
In the Film, Ardab Mutiyaran, the main character is a young Punjabi woman portrayed as very strong, independent, and fearless.
In Punjab, there are lots of stereotypes against women. Women are seen as fragile, weak, and unable to protect themselves. The main character of this movie is the exact opposite. Babbu Bains, played by Sonam Bajwa, is a strong, fearless, independent young woman. There are many scenes in this movie where Bajwa (Bains) is seen beating up men who thought they could take advantage of her. When men cat-call her, she makes sure to teach them a lesson on respecting women
When I watched this movie for the first time, It was easy to love it. As a young woman who grew up in a Punjabi household, I have seen firsthand how these stereotypes of women come into play. Some examples of some stereotypes against women would be that women are girly and don’t know anything about cars. There is a scene in the film where Babbu is driving a stick shift Jeep with the windows down and blasting music. This shows that women are also able to drive stick-shift cars, not just the men. I know it may sound like this isn’t a big deal, but for us Punjabi women, it is. Another example is how women are “weak” and “unable to protect themselves”. In the same scene where she is seen driving a stick-shift car, there are three men on a motorcycle following beside her. The three men basically began cat-calling her. She ignored them at first but then when they sped up and passed her, she sped past them and pulled her car right in front of them and stopped. When she got out of the car, they thought she was reciprocating their feelings, when she really wasn’t. She asked if any of them had a phone, and to note the number she was reciting. When they asked if that was her phone number, she replied with, “ਹੱਡੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਦਾ ਨੰਬਰ ਹੈ”, which translates to “It's an orthopedic doctors number”. As the three men looked at each other in confusion, she went to her car and grabbed a bat. I’ll allow you to imagine what happened next!
As mentioned in Punjabi Manias' article about the film, the new generation of films is beginning to focus on strong female leads. For a long time, the film industry has been making movies with prominent leadership roles. These films all have two things in common, strong men, and women who needed to be saved by these strong men. These movies are teaching young people that the strong women in their lives will never be as strong as the men, which is wrong. That's why this movie is important to Punjabi women.
In Punjab and India in general, women are oppressed, not only by the men in their lives but by the government as well. If a woman is sexually assaulted by her husband, there are no consequences. She cannot go to the authorities for help because talking about such things is seen as “shameful”. Even if she were to ask someone for help, nothing would be done, since the assault was committed by her husband. The woman's husband has more rights over her body than she does.
That is why, movies like this are important. People need to see that women can be more than just stay at home mothers who cook and clean all day.
The main character, played by Sonam Bajwa, also has an important effect on this film. Sonam Bajwa is an actor and model who is in lots of Punjabi films. She is known for her popular roles, and for breaking norms about Punjabi women. She is seen in lots of music videos and ad campaigns wearing clothing that would not be considered “modest” in Punjabi culture. Usually, women are seen wearing full clothing head to toe, so to see Bajwa wear crop tops and shorts, is something that took some getting used to in Punjab. In western countries, the clothing she wears would be seen as very normal, but for a country that expects it is women to be modest, it is anything but normal. For a popular Punjabi woman who is very much in the spotlight, she plays an important role in breaking these norms in our culture.
On her Instagram, @sonambajwa, she posts videos of her working out, modeling, etc. Her 7.5 million followers love seeing her confident content. From posting pictures of herself in bathing suits to videos of her lifting weights, Bajwa shares it all on her Instagram. She is breaking the norms that women should be scared to post whatever they want without being judged and criticized.
In the film, there is a song called “Jatti Jeone Morh Wargi”. The title translates to “She is like Jeona Morh”. Jeona Morh was a historical symbol of Justice. He fought against the injustice his family faced and was seen as a strong person. In the movie when this song plays, someone asks for her help and she goes to help her friend with a weapon. People trembled at the sight of her. This is important because she was seen as someone who they should not come across or mess with. When people were causing trouble with her or with her friends, she was there and took care of it immediately. The song is sang by a very famous Punjabi singer, Sidhu Moosewala. Moosewala singing a song about a strong woman is significant since he has such a heavy male following. For him to make a song about a strong, independent woman, teaches his fans that they should respect women the way that he does.
It is easy to think that the singer of this song may not truly care for, or respect women. But, I have a personal experience where I have seen him demonstrate this. In 2019, Moosewala had a concert in Chicago, Illinois. I was at this concert. During the concert, lots of young women were being pushed around and being shoved. Many of us were standing towards the front of the stage but were being pulled back by men. Moosewala stopped the concert midway to see what was going on. He saw that the guys were pushing us back and made an announcement. He said, “I know we are all here to enjoy the concert but stop pushing the ladies. All of the men need to step aside and let the girls come up to the front. Keep our sisters safe, and stop pushing them around”. All of the girls were then allowed to come up to the front and we all cheered and clapped for him since he did something about what was happening. Many artists don’t do anything about things that happen at their concerts. But he took time out to make sure that we were able to enjoy the concert just as much as everyone else.
Another important aspect of this movie is romance. Usually, in Punjabi movies, the romance is led by male characters. This movie was the exact opposite. The male lead was the shyer, reserved one, compared to Bains, who was straightforward and knew what she wanted. Sonam is known for her roles like this. In another film, Guddiyan Patole, her character was the one who confessed her feelings for the guy.
Both of these films show that women do not have the be the ones to wait around waiting for everything. The main takeaway I had from each of these films was to be strong and do what your heart tells you to do. Even if society tells you it is not the normal, or “feminine” thing to do.
The happy ending in this film was led by Bajwa's character. When I watched this film, I felt a sense of pride. Being represented in a major film by one of the most popular actors felt like a really big step. As a Punjabi American, I felt as if the way we were taught to act in America was finally being spread to the women in Punjab as well. My father always taught me to be strong, independent, and never to be afraid of anything. The main character showed those same qualities. Seeing her act just as my father raised me to act, felt like a full-circle moment. Seeing her play this badass character, made me want to be just as strong. I hope that all of the young women that watched this film felt the same way I did.
I want all of my fellow Punjabi women to know that you are not alone. There are so many of us to help support each other. There are so many examples of strong women that we can look up to.
Sonam Bajwa is breaking all of the stereotypes one by one. As a Punjabi woman in the limelight, it would be hard to do the things she is doing.
