A body on the step and lies all about - i
cooper howard x angel!gn!reader
tags; slow burn, character study, cowboys, angels, religion, gender neutral reader warnings; none
masterlist | cross posted on ao3 inspired by the fallen by @geeks-universe! please check it out summary ; You are an angel, trying to help humanity build what their leaders destroyed. He is a man cursed to painful immortality, trying to survive in the world his leaders destroyed.
He thought he had squashed out all that remained of his humanity, but here you were, all gentle hands and knowing looks, throwing a wrench into the character he had so carefully constructed.
Some of the others questioned why you remained on Earth, even after Father’s creations had burnt it in fire and gamma. They had all given up hope that good may remain and therefore given up on all of them.
You knew not all of them were at fault - a single secretary could do nothing in the face of her government’s greed and hubris. She could not be blamed, could not be declared evil for someone else’s crime.
Still, grief was something you had become intricately familiar with. Looking at the ashen remains of all Father and humanity had created, you felt nothing but grief in its rawest, most volatile form.
But you remained. You held onto that hope, because what else were you without it?
Few of your siblings remained on Earth, equally dedicated to protecting and nudging humanity in the right direction. You remained in contact, despite millennia-long arguments on right and wrong.
If you asked yourself back in the 20th century whether you’d find yourself allies and almost friends with Lucifer himself, you wouldn’t have believed it.
But here you were. Constantly tasting the acidic flavour of radiation in the air, watching as humans tore each other apart again and again and tried to undo what they had done each time.
---
Purdue had grown into a careful little town in recent years. Before, they had called it West Lafayette, and before then it was Chauncey. But now it was Purdue, named after the title stamped into cracked signs and burnt textbooks.
They still used the old street signs - someone had taken time to repaint the little forest green rectangles and white letters.
Fondy was a bar built in the bottom floor of an apartment building, half of the letters had fallen off with age, the original name lost to time. Some of the apartments now were used as an inn, though not many travellers ended up in Purdue when Lucas Oil and Big State were only a day’s walk south.
And here you were, sitting at the counter as Buddy Holly’s voice buzzed from the little restored radio on the counter. Lukas Striker had recently set up in Big State, and you had provided a generous donation of songs to the bright-eyed boy. What a King was doing starting a radio show in the remnants of Indiana was beyond you, but you were happy to indulge.
You had always liked music, after all.
You were nursing your first drink of the night - whisky, caravanned out of Kentucky. The bitter taste was familiar on your tongue. Nothing compared to the expensive drinks Lucifer would encourage you to indulge in back in the day, alongside corny movies and drunken exchanges of stories.
He had been on a Western kick in 2076 and some of ‘77, particularly fond of one pretty little actor named Cooper Howard. His dark hair carefully slicked back reminded you of a gang you met back in the day, though it took quite a few more drinks to pull that story out of you.
You reckoned, if they ever made a movie about them, put some facial hair and cigarettes on Howard and he was practically the spitting image.
The ice clinked against the stained glass as you thought back to those late nights, drinking and laughing at the humans’ entertainment.
Before the resources grew too few, and the humans’ greed too powerful.
The ramshackle wood doors creaked open, announcing a new customer, but you didn’t look up from the spot you were studying on the counter. It had been built out of old signs and car parts, you could see a Toyota logo.
He sat three stools from you and ordered in a low voice, heavy with a southern accent. Speaking of Westerns, you thought to yourself.
You cast him a brief glance. He had rough skin, most of it covered with a ragged duster and clothes stained brown. His hat was angled to shield his eyes, despite being inside, and you could see the way his hazel eyes studied the room curiously.
You recognised his kind - mortals cursed to immortality. Skin ragged and burnt. Some had their brains melt away with the cartilage and hair, but others held onto their sanity despite.
His gaze met yours - intelligent, calculating, suspicious - and you held it for a moment, sizing each other up.
There was something familiar about him that tugged at your tongue, but you couldn’t puzzle it out just yet. You would keep an eye on him, then - he had a dangerous look about him.
The radio buzzed as the music rolled over to Billie Holiday. You didn’t look away, even as his drink was passed to him.
Finally, he downed the thing in one gulp and slammed the glass on the counter, leaning forward. “Reckon I’ve seen you before.” He mused.
“I thought the same.” You replied evenly, taking a careful sip from your drink.
The two of you fell silent again. You wondered what he was thinking, why he wasn’t ignoring you as you had planned to do to him.
He gestured for another drink, and the bartender hesitated for a moment. The man sighed and retrieved a few coppers, which seemed to appease the bartender for now.
“What brings you to Purdue?” You decided to ask, growing uncomfortable with the tense silence in the nearly empty bar.
He hummed, leaning back in his seat and draping one arm on the counter, tilting his head to look at you.
It clicked, then, who you were looking at. Speak of the devil (haha), the hollowed out ghost of Cooper Howard sat in that torn duster, staring you down with curiosity and bitterness in those chesnut eyes.
“Work.” He replied simply. “You?”
You shrugged. “I travel.”
He paused, tilting his head a little further, and you couldn’t help but compare him to a little labrador puppy studying something new for the first time.
The conversation largely ended there, though both of you did ocassionally hum along to the music playing from the radio. He was much more quiet than you, but the tapping of his fingers and the soft rumble of his voice didn’t escape your attention.
You gave him a friendly smile as you left, though he ignored it.
And you wondered.

i love stobin working retail jobs and sharing a resume so much but consider this. steve follows robin to bloomington, indianapolis, west lafayette, wherever she decides to go and they get a little apartment. maybe they decide to go out of state but i think they stay in the midwest. then st takes a page from buffy and steve works construction while robin goes to school.
#i think this would play nicely into him believing he's not smart#and robin's like “what? you built my desk all by yourself. i don't know anyone else who'd be able to do that.”#“and you fixed mrs. robinson's fence just last week! that little dog of hers was always getting out and digging holes in her rose garden.”#and she reassures him that all those things require skill and important and HE'S important#and he believes her a little more every time he hears her say it :)#the day she learns about gardner's theory of multiple intelligences she can barely contain herself#she's so excited to tell steve she doesn't even get the car door closed before she's blurting it out#like “GUESS WHAT 😳”#and maybe he gets a little misty but he saves the tears for later when he can really think about how much he's loved and how they're both o#and living the life they both want because they built it together!!!!#anyway . . .#i swear this was just supposed to be a post about steve being hot#but that kinda got away from me#i could go on and on about them#steve harrington#robin buckley#stobin#god help me i'm scared to have my post In The Tags but i must maintain tag consistency for my blog#also i remember very little about buffy#this is a stranger things post#*and ARE important#*they're both OK#i haaaate typos in tags but i'm not writing all that again

Pitch for a Dark Pictures Anthology game:
1) The title
“Siblings”
2) The prologue
In 1963, Dr. Sean West and Dr. Sadie Miller (the red herring protagonists) are members of the illegal CIA program Project MKUltra. They are experimenting on a woman who they believe has some sort of telepathic power.
Things go awry when the woman escapes, resulting in a massacre of the entire staff. West and Miller attempt to escape, but are eventually slaughtered by the unnamed woman.
(The order and manner in which Sean and Sadie can die will be affected by the players’ actions)
3) The main story
In the present day, the focus is on a fashion show in Milan, Italy. Our main characters are patrons of the show, there to enjoy the spectacle. The show is run by an elderly billionaire named Lawrence Donahue, who was apparently a big deal in American politics during the 1970s.
The show suddenly takes a turn for the worst with the arrival of two teenagers; Francis and his sister April. The two teenagers get into a fight and the crowd kicks both of them out, believing them to be unruly protestors of opposing causes.
That’s when it’s revealed that Francis and April are the great-grandchildren of the unnamed woman from the prologue. The woman’s descendants all ended up developing some sort of telepathic/telekinetic power. Francis has the power of mind control, to create mental illusions, and change how people view the world (so he’s like the fear gas from Man of Medan). April has telekinesis (so she’s Carrie or Eleven).
It’s revealed that Lawrence Donahue was a high-ranking member of Project MKUltra. In response to the unnamed woman’s rampage in 1963, Lawrence sent mercenaries to kill her in 1983. Since then, the unnamed woman’s family has tried to avenge her death, but failed every time.
Francis is here to kill Lawrence. April is here to stop Francis, believing that the desire for revenge is tearing the family apart. Unfortunately, our main heroes are caught in the middle of Francis and April’s fight. It’ll be up to the players to survive the showdown, as well as determine which sibling wins.
4) Inspirations
The real life Project MKUltra, obviously
Stranger Things (specifically El vs. Vecna)
Carrie
Kilgrave from Jessica Jones
The Umbrella Academy
Resident Evil (sorta, kinda)
Chronicle
5) Main protagonists
a. Chris “Reaper Rick” Bernstein (RELAXED, CONFIDENT): A mainstream hip hop rapper of Jewish and African-American descent. Despite his wealth, he’s down-to-earth and more focused on giving back to his family. He is played by the special celebrity guest star, Daveed Diggs, who you might recognize as Lafayette/Jefferson from the Broadway musical Hamilton.
b. Alison Parker (ARROGANT, OVERBEARING): A wealthy socialite and influencer from the UK. She blatantly admits that the only reason she’s attending the show was for the clout since this was the biggest fashion show of the year.
c. Cho Woo-Jin (COMPLEX, ABRASIVE): The CEO of a South Korean soju company. He was attending the fashion show to get away from his crumbling family life at home, while also supporting his daughter who is one of the runway models.
d. Cho Eun-bi (ADVENTUROUS, AMBITIOUS): Woo-Jin’s daughter and one of the runway models of the fashion show. She is close to her father, but wants to distance herself from her family by achieving her own wealth as an international model.
e. Hector Morales (BRAVE, TEMPERAMENTAL): One of the staff workers. It’s revealed that he hates the hospitality industry due to how the wealthy treat the staff, which is why he doesn’t get along with the other four protagonists at first. Hector fulfills the role of the protagonist who is different from the other 4 (Fliss, John, Salim, Charlie).
6) Other ways to change the ending: Francis or April?
Aside from keeping your characters alive, you can determine who wins the sibling war. So either Francis or April will be the final boss. The game can end with -
* Francis wins by killing April. He then goes on to kill Lawrence Donahue. However, Francis goes on to keep killing as he’s lost his marbles at this point. This would be one of the bad endings.
* April wins by reluctantly killing Francis, thus stopping the rampage. Donahue’s crimes are exposed and is arrested, thus the family gets their revenge anyways. This would be one of the good endings.
* Francis and April both lose since the players choose to tell both of them to fuck off. This results in Francis and April killing each other, leading to the total destruction of the area. The characters can still survive by escaping to safety. This would be a neutral ending.
In all endings, the survival of the 5 protagonists is a separate factor. You can save all of your protagonists in either scenario.

2024-12-07: North Colorado (Hex 7)
Hairpin turns and switchbacks zigzag across the mountainside, the narrow roads providing majestic views alongside the fear of falling from a great height.
Notable Feature: Constructed Landmark
Ski lift gondolas hang from cables draped over the mountain. Some are probably operational, but just as many are probably unsafe to use because of a lack of maintenance. For the lifts that aren't turned on, there's usually a switch inside one of the ski lodge chateaus that provides power. But you have to find the right chateau first.
Hidden: The Absent Father
Inside a sturdy A-frame house on the mountainside lives Phil Bradbury, a man who now works odd jobs in construction during the summer and helping out at ski resorts during the winter. He's starting a new life out west after moving from North Dakota. Though he won't willingly disclose this information, he escaped from a North Dakota prison after being convicted on manslaughter charges. The individual he killed was a changeling, and the changeling's family is out for revenge. He is worried that the changelings are closing in on his adult son's (Jonah) location back in North Dakota, but he can't step foot in North Dakota (inside or outside The Routes) without attracting the attention of the changelings in the area.
For those that are willing to head to North Dakota and do a little bit of physical labor, Phil requests that a car-load worth of enchanted metal pipe be buried in the ground around the perimeter of Jonah's house. Phil suggests that the easiest way to do it would be to pose as workers from the local gas company who need to trench some pipe around the property. Under no circumstances is Jonah to know that his father is behind this gesture, because Jonah will try to track Phil down and put both of them directly in the path of the changelings.
Lair: The Manor of Keleman Farkas, Local Vampire
In Lafayette, Colorado, in the southeastern portion of the state, there is an urban legend that a dead vampire is buried underneath the grave of Fodor Glava. This is only partially true, because the pauper who was buried underneath Fodor was a half-turned thrall for a vampire. The thrall was under the control of a vampire named Kelemen Farkas who emigrated from Hungary prior to 1900 and currently lives in north Colorado.
Kelemen is a moderately wealthy man who keeps odd hours (because of the vampirism, obviously), but he also has a type of blood cancer. Although Kelemen's vampirism is able to keep his own infection in check, it inevitably takes over his thralls after a year or two and turns them into feral monsters without the slightest hint of humanity. Until Kelemen can be slain or evicted from the area, encounters in this hex or the adjacent ones are much more likely and will almost assuredly involve feral vampires.
Service Station: Alpine Slopes Mountain Mart
The Alpine Slopes Mountain Mart provides several important functions for the people living in remote parts of north Colorado. Fuel, canned food, and firewood are the primary goods for sale, though the store also offers gas or diesel generators for purchase. The shop also offers a towing service for those unfortunate cars who get stuck on desolate roads.
Running the shop are twin brothers who both go by the name John. John is actually their last name, and their first names are Leroy and Fredrick; no one can tell them apart, so they go by John instead. Both brothers have a "one of those faces" that drive people crazy as they try to remember who the Johns remind them of.

Roll Call: 1870s Adventurer Edition
Josephine "Josie" Doyle, Old West Gunslinger
Player: Skylarynn [Yours Truly] Mark of Handling Human Outlander background Level 7 Gunslinger Fighter
Born on the Western Frontier to an American cowboy and a Mexican senorita, Josie grew up a bit more rough-and-tumble than other young 'ladies' her age. After a monster attack that cost her her eye and her family their lives, leaving Josie irrevocably changed in more ways than one, she finds herself called to battle the eldritch under the guidance of someone - or something - that calls itself Damocles.
Basil Morgan, Victorian Gentleman Thief
Player: Sage Mark of Finding Human Noble background Level 1 Rogue/Level 7 College of Eloquence Bard
Born in the more refined upper crust of Victorian society, Basil has become a remittance man - a younger son with no hope of inheritance sent away to America and paid a small allowance to stay out of trouble. Basil being Basil, however, tends to walk headlong into trouble anyway, and when he meets a one-eyed lady gunslinger [Josie] haunted by danger at every step, Basil does exactly what his family would forbid and runs headfirst into peril by her side.
Kojiro Mori, Disgraced Former Samurai
Player: Kai Mark of Sentinel Human Haunted One background Level 9 Samurai Fighter
Raised in the hallowed traditions of the Japanese warrior caste, Kojiro's world is now falling apart as the Meiji reign takes over, making the caste - and Kojiro himself - obsolete relics of an older time. Then, when crossing the Pacific to request aid from samurai descendants in Mexico goes horribly wrong, Kojiro spirals into an existential crisis as he questions the futility of his original quest when something as unstoppable and unforgiving as the Sleeper in the Deep exists.
Lafayette Chastain, Elderly French Pirate
Player: Lawrence [Sage's dad] Variant Human Sailor background Level 15 Swashbuckler Rogue
Decades ago, Lafayette was a charismatic young privateer at sea in the Caribbean, adventuring with fearless abandon in a world of excitement and opportunity. Now, he spends most of his time in various bars and saloons across America, regaling fellow patrons with embellished tales of his exploits as he seeks one last adventure; a man who has outlived his destiny.
Dominique Escharra-Romero, Spanish Catholic Priest
Player: Damien Mark of Passage Human Acolyte background Level 6 Celestial Warlock
Charismatic, devout, and ambitious, Dominique was a rising star in the Church of his homeland Spain - which may be why his contemporaries shipped him overseas to serve in Mexico where he was no longer a threat to their careers. Ever-unflappable, Dominique took the transference in stride and immediately began thriving in his new position; though perhaps that has to do with his newfound powers of healing that he ascribes to the divine.
Izel Maria Torres, Aztec-Descended Druid
Player: Iris Plane Shift[?] Human Courtier background [might be wrong on that one] Level 4 Circle of the Primeval Druid/Level 2 Grave Domain Cleric
Born first a daughter of the people and baptized a daughter of the Lord, Izel is as much a child of the native Nahua of Mexico as she is a child of God. Despite the struggles of living in two very different worlds, Izel has successfully bridged the two cultures in her life, reconciling her 'pagan' attunement to nature and the wild with her faith in Christ under the proud tutelage of Father Dominique.
Gideon Ross, Union Veteran Sniper
Player: Gavin [Matt's older brother] Plane Shift Human Marine background Level 12 Renegade Fighter
