St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church (Old Pilgrim Church)
2486 W 14th St,
Cleveland, OH 44113
St. Augustine Parish in Cleveland, Ohio, has had a long and wonderful history. This is a story of a people of faith that began in 1860 and continues to this day. The parish has always been an "immigrant" community. At the very beginning it welcomed the Irish families that had settled in what is now called the Tremont area of Cleveland. Soon it welcomed people of German background, and then the other immigrant communities as they came to Cleveland. St. Augustine Parish was formed in 1860 as part of Ohio City's St. Patrick's Parish—one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the city. Other Tremont churches formed from St. Patrick's include Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church (1871) and St. John Cantius (1899).
The need for a new parish in Tremont arose as people of Irish descent began moving into the neighborhood. In 1896 the Cleveland Catholic Diocese purchased the old Pilgrim Congregational Church, whose congregation had recently moved into a new building at the corner of West 14th Street (Jennings Avenue) and Starkweather Avenue. The “new” St. Augustine had been built in the 1860s in Victorian Gothic style, replacing the original frame church which stood at Tremont Street and Jefferson Avenue.
St. Augustine is an interesting blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its Romanesque features include a corbel table–that is, a line of stone blocks–below the roofline; large gables; and rectangular columns or pilasters. The pointed arches above several of the entrances are more Gothic in design. Later in its history, it welcomed members of the Hispanic community as they, too, came to Cleveland, and to meet the needs of the neighborhood's changing demographics began offering Spanish-language services in the 1970s. The congregation focuses particularly tightly on aiding the homeless and people with disabilities.
As St. Augustine welcomed all of these diverging communities to our parish, ittried to respond by ministering to them spiritually, educationally, and socially. The parish has become a place in which those most in need are honored and served. The parish was especially blessed to become the home to the Catholic Deaf community in 1964. Next, it welcomed members of the Catholic Blind community, and later still, it welcomed persons with mental illness. Later, it was honored to become the home to minister to all persons with disabilities. Persons with disabilities have helped to develop the parish mission and ministry, and has allowed it, for the last fifty-five years, to be place of special welcome to disabled people and their families.
Finally, efforts to respond to many needs of people and the needs of the larger community led to the establishment of the St. Augustine Center. That Center, through its daily meal programs, its holiday celebrations, its provision of clothing, utility and rental assistance, crisis ministry, and advocacy for persons in need, has made it possible for the parish to minister to those most in need. Located at 2486 West 14th Street, built in the 1860s, and sold to the Catholic Diocese in 1894, the building originally known as the Old Pilgrim Church is now the current home of St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church.

Here’s The Dish: Kossar’s Onion Bialy
— May 10, 2024 | By Ava Stryker-Robbins | West Side Rag
In 1936, Morris Kossar and Isadore Mirsky opened Mirsky’s and Kossar’s Bagels on the Lower East Side. After 88 years, multiple opening-date changes, and lots of eager anticipation, the doors to the Upper West Side branch of Kossar’s opened early Thursday morning. “We wanted to make sure the product was perfect and ready,” an owner, Marom Unger, shared with West Side Rag during a phone interview.
“The neighborhood is beyond excited for us to open. They’ve been waiting close to two years,” he said. “Now that we have a clean, beautiful space here with a lot of nostalgic old-school pictures and they see us working in here, they’re in shock that it’s really happening.”
Kossar’s sells several varieties of both bagels and bialys that are baked throughout the day in the store. According to Unger, they anticipate 80-85% of their bread sales to be bagels. “Bialys are not a commonly known thing anymore, so we have a responsibility to educate,” Unger said.
Kossar’s website describes a Bialy as similar to a Bagel, but “Softer, Chewier and Lighter, with No Hole in the Middle.” Bialys typically have Onion, Garlic, or another Type of Filling in the center. They Originated in Poland. “It was their local bread that they had around the table,” Unger said. “It’s Essentially Poor Jewish Bread.”
As thousands of Polish Jews migrated to the Lower East Side to escape persecution during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bialys traveled with them. Unger explained that Kossar’s story began when “Morris Kossar started selling them as an homage to his home back in Białystok, Poland.”
And while the rest of the world and New York City underwent many changes, Kossar’s has not. “The bialys are exactly the same as when they were coming out of the ovens in 1936,” he said, adding that the recipe is relatively simple, as it only requirebs four ingredients as well as “a lot of knowledge and love.”
The onion bialy is delicious. Its light texture and sweet onion filling make for a wonderful breakfast. Even the bread itself has a different flavor than a bagel—it is rich and tastes more like pizza dough than other types of bread. I personally have and always will be team bialy, and Kossar’s bialys are my favorite of all.
Tumblr media
Upper West Siders are waiting in line for Bagels (and Bialys) all over the Neighborhood.
Unger is aware of the impact Kossar’s can have on the neighborhood and the people in it. “Bialys Are Very Nostalgic for people who grew up on the Lower East Side eating them,” he said. “We get a lot of people saying ‘I used to come here with my grandfather or my great grandfather.’”
Unger too has a personal connection to Kossar’s, as he grew up eating bialys. He is an immigrant who moved to the city when he was very young and is half Polish and half Romanian.
“My dad was a limousine driver and he would bring bialys to us. I grew up hearing the stories of the bialy,” he recalled. “When I told my dad [that I was buying Kossar’s], he nearly had a heart attack. It was very full circle for us. It’s really close to my heart and I hope to be doing it a service.”
Unger concluded by reiterating how seriously he takes operating Kossar’s. “We have a responsibility and duty to maintain this product and the longevity of Kossar’s for the next generation,” he said. “We are trying to put out a perfect New York bagel and a perfect bialy every day.”
The Onion Bialy Costs $1.75.

Top Places to Visit in Bowness, Calgary
Bowness is a neighborhood and former town in west Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The former town was amalgamated into the City of Calgary in 1964. The neighborhood is bordered by the Bow River to the north and east, 16 Avenue to the south, and Stoney Trail to the west.
Tumblr media
Edworthy Park
Edworthy Park is a city park located in the Northwest section of Calgary along the south shore of the Bow River. The Canadian Pacific Railway crosses the length of the park. It was named after Thomas Edworthy, who immigrated to the Calgary area in 1883 from Devon, England. The trees that can be found in Edworthy Park include riparian woodland with aspen, willow, and balsam poplar. There is also some grassland mixed shrubland, and an escarpment where white spruce dominates. The spruce is an isolated population of Douglas-fir, some more than 400 years old.
Tumblr media
Edworthy Park is built on the former site of a sandstone quarry. The land was purchased by the City of Calgary in 1962 for the development of the park. Prior to the mid-1990s, the City of Calgary intended to eventually replace Edworthy Park with an extension of the Shaganappi Trail freeway. The extension would have linked Shaganappi Trail, Sarcee Trail, and Bow Trail at a major interchange that would take up most of the southwest part of Edworthy Park. During the development of the Calgary Transportation Plan (also known as "The Go Plan") in 1995, public opposition to the roadway led to it being removed from future consideration.
Calgary Stampede
The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ten-day event, which bills itself as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth", attracts over one million visitors per year and features one of the world's largest rodeos, a parade, a midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing, and First Nations exhibitions. In 2008, the Calgary Stampede was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.
Tumblr media
The event's roots are traced to 1886 when the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair. In 1912, American promoter Guy Weadick organized his first rodeo and festival, known as the Stampede. He returned to Calgary in 1919 to organize the Victory Stampede in honor of soldiers returning from World War I. Weadick's festival became an annual event in 1923 when it merged with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition to create the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.

Rag Picker’s Alley in Photos and Paintings
The precise location of the alleyway known as “Rag Picker’s Alley” or “Rag Alley” in pre-1906 Chinatown appears to have been lost to memory.  The alley was probably located slightly east and parallel to Dupont Street (modern day Grant Avenue) and running south from Washington to Jackson streets, between Washington Place (now known as Wentworth) and Kearny Street.
Tumblr media
Detail from the July 1885 “vice map” commissioned by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors showing a “court” running along the eastern side of the Baptist Chinese Mission, a possible location of “Rag Alley” (from the collection of the Chinese Historical Society of America).
Some archival sources refer to the alleyway as the “Devil’s Kitchen” which is probably incorrect, as contemporary sources located the Devil’s Kitchen as a mid-block courtyard located in the mid-block area behind the addresses of 618 and 620 Jackson Street.
Tumblr media
“Chinese Ragpicker. San Francisco.”  No date. Photograph by Houseworth & Co. (from the collection of The Society of California Pioneers.
In the old San Francisco Chinatown prior to 1906, rag pickers worked in the streets to collect and sort through various materials, such as rags, paper, bones, and scrap metal, that could be sold to recycling companies for a profit.  Chinatown in the late 1800s served as a hub for recycling and rag picking, as Chinese immigrants who were excluded from other industries due to discrimination and limited job opportunities often turned to this profession to earn a living. Rag pickers would roam the streets, searching for discarded materials and hauling them back to their sorting facilities or storage spaces.
Tumblr media
“San Francisco, Cal. – A Chinese Rag-Picker’s House on Dupont Street.” No date, drawing based on a photograph by Houseworth & Co.  In old San Francisco Chinatown, rag pickers’ homes often doubled as sorting and storage facilities.
In addition to collecting and selling recyclable materials, rag pickers also played a vital role in keeping the streets of Chinatown clean. Since sanitation services were often inadequate or nonexistent in the area, rag pickers would help clear away trash and debris, preventing the accumulation of waste that could lead to disease outbreaks.
Despite their contributions to the community, rag pickers faced numerous challenges and prejudices. They were often viewed as lower-class individuals and faced discrimination from the wider society. Additionally, the work was physically demanding and dangerous, as rag pickers had to navigate through crowded streets and handle sharp or hazardous materials.
Tumblr media
Two Chinese residents of “Rag Alley,” c. 1890.  Photograph by Isaiah West Taber (from the Underwood Archives).  The woman seen in this photo is the same person seen in Taber’s photo, “B3099 Rag Alley, Chinatown, S.F.”
Overall, rag pickers played an important role in the economy and cleanliness of San Francisco's Chinatown pre-1906, despite facing significant challenges and obstacles.
In 2008, The Bancroft Library acquired 13 paintings of San Francisco’s Chinatown by Charles Albert Rogers.  Born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1848, Rogers studied art in New York and pursued further training in Munich, Paris, and Rome.  From 1901 to 1902, Rogers painted various subjects in old Chinatown, including three paintings of Chinese subjects in Rag Picker’s Alley.
Tumblr media
“In Rag Pickers Alley,” 1901.  Painting by Charles Albert Rogers, oil on canvas (from the collection of the Bancroft Library).  The alley, also known as the “Devil’s Kitchen,” was probably located off of Washington Street, between Washington Place and Kearny Street.
Bancroft curator Theresa Salazar has written about Rogers’ Chinatown paintings as follows:
“By 1877 he was in San Francisco, where he painted oil and watercolor portraits, landscapes, and coastal scenes. When the San Francisco earthquake struck on April 18, 1906, the wooden buildings of Chinatown suffered only minor damage; but the area was completely destroyed in the ensuing days by the raging fires that engulfed the entire eastern half of the city. Rogers’ studio, located at 108 Stockton Street in Chinatown, was destroyed along with all his work. After the earthquake he moved to Los Angeles; during the summer of 1911 he painted in Yosemite. He died in Alameda, California, in 1918 (Hughes, p. 949).
“Rogers’ depiction of Chinatown before its destruction in 1906 was fortuitous.  Capturing the people and places of this city within a city, he records Chinatown before the earthquake, rendering the typical dress of its inhabitants and the flavor of the humdrum and humble activities of its back alleys. Its ramshackle wooden buildings and tenement houses were far from important architectural structures, as Rogers’ paintings attest; but they also attest to the existence of a vibrant community and culture. Each painting bears the artist’s original annotation as to location and date, with the time of day also noted on some works. In this image, Rogers captures the overlay of Chinese artifacts on the nondescript 19th century brick building—the Chinese artisan, the lanterns, baskets, cooking pots, and other objects all create the distinctive characteristics of the neighborhood.”

Tumblr media
“No. 140 San Francisco, California. Hitting the Pipe in Chinatown. Driven out by earthquake and fire Apr. 18, 1906.” Photograph by Charles Weidner (postcard from the collection of Wong Yuen-Ming).  In another such postcard in a private collection, postmarked Oakland 2/17/1908 (earlier variants date from 1904), the sender noted that the caption "Hitting the Pipe" was intentionally misleading, as it suggested opium smoking instead of smoking tobacco.  Several of Weidner’s Chinatown photos, including this one, appeared in the polemic “Why The Chinese Should Be Excluded,” published in Railroad Trainmen's Journal (Vol. 19, Issue 1, Jan. 1902). The article printed a wider angle image of the same location with the caption “Ragpickers Alley.”
Tumblr media
“No. 278 – Rag Pickers Alley” no date, pre-1906.  Photograph by R.J. Waters.
Tumblr media
“Rag Pickers’ Alley, Chinatown” no date.  Photographer unknown (from a post-quake,1906 magazine).  The photograph shows the last dwelling unit before the stairway in the same location shown in the preceding photo by R.J. Waters.
Tumblr media
“Rag Pickers Alley,” c. pre-1906. Photograph by Edmond H. Walter (from the collection of the Library of Congress).  This photo is often dated as taken in 1920, but the hair of the elderly pipe-smoker is bound in a pre-1911 queue, and the buildings seen in the background represent the type of construction of pre-1906 earthquake and fire buildings in San Francisco Chinatown.

Tumblr media
Ermias Joseph Asghedom was born on August 15, 1985, in Crenshaw, Los Angeles, California,to Angelique Smith, an African-American woman, and Dawit Asghedom, an Eritrean immigrant. He was raised in the Crenshaw neighborhood of South Los Angeles with his brother Samuel and his sister Samantha. Asghedom attended Alexander Hamilton High School in the nearby Castle Heights neighborhood, but dropped out before graduating. At the age of 14, Asghedom left home and joined the local Rollin 60's Neighborhood Crips, a sub-group of the larger Crips gang primarily based in his home neighborhood of Crenshaw. His stage name, a play on the name of comedian Nipsey Russell, originated as a nickname given to Asghedom by a childhood friend. At the age of 19, Asghedom's father took both him and his brother Samuel on a trip to Eritrea, East Africa for three months in 2004.Asghedom credited the trip with inspiring him to become a community activist with an "entrepreneurial spirit

Death
On March 31, 2019, Hussle was shot at least 10 times in the parking lot of his store, Marathon Clothing, in South Los Angeles at 3:18 p.m. Gunshot wounds included a shot to his right chest, a shot that entered into his abdomen near his navel and severed his spinal cord, a gunshot wound to the right side of his back that penetrated into his chest and struck his lung, and a gunshot wound to "the posterior top" of his scalp. Two others were wounded in the shooting. All three victims were transported to a hospital, where Hussle was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. He was 33 years old. Rapper GBO Gaston claimed to have killed Nipsey Hussle on an Instagram post before the suspected perpetrator was arrested.Police have identified 29-year-old Eric Ronald Holder Jr. as the suspect.
Investigators believe Eric Holder, the suspect, was known to the rapper and that the shooting was possibly motivated by a personal matter. On April 2, 2019, Holder was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department and was being held in solitary confinement. On May 9, a grand jury indicted Holder on one count of murder, two counts each of attempted murder and assault with a firearm, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. On February 9, 2020, Judge Robert Perry said he hoped to begin the murder trial by early April.
Hussle is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Southern California. His brother, Samiel Asghedom, was appointed the permanent administrator of Hussle's estate.
Tumblr media
Hussle's memorial service was held on April 11 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, with tickets provided free of charge. A letter from former president Barack Obama praised the rapper for his work in the community: While most folks look at the Crenshaw neighborhood where he grew up and see only gangs, bullets, and despair, Nipsey saw potential
Tumblr media
A petition was started to rename the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard near Hussle's store Marathon Clothing to "Nipsey Hussle Square". On the day of his funeral, the council announced it was set to be renamed Ermias "Nipsey Hussle" Asghedom Square to honor him and his contributions to the neighborhood.
