So what are your post war headcanons, not just for the major characters but the characters like parvati or seamus?
I have been thinking about this ask & looking forward to answering it all day!
The summary of my headcanons are: The Kids Are Not Alright
They all just experienced these intense traumas, and it’s a communal trauma in a way but it’s not like a natural disaster where people can band together against an external threat (and experience the protective factor of a community). It’s the communal trauma of a civil war in which people were complicit or resisting in different ways.
I imagine there is a TON of survivor’s guilt. Lots of guilt, shame, anger about those who collaborated. And somehow they have to have a society again??
The only hints of mental health treatment we get in canon are just… institutionalization. And also alcohol abuse on occasion. This is not a society well-equipped to handle mass trauma!
Some people would want to go “back to normal” as quickly as possible. Some people would see that “normal” is not something they should aspire to. (Relatedly: this is why I adore this truth & reconciliation wolfstar fic SO MUCH.)
I see wizarding society as going through a pretty hedonistic period after the war as people are trying to feel happy/feel anything (heavy potions and drug use, casual sex) and there is very little of a society that people can hold onto. THEN there would be an intense conservative backlash that would particularly target ~dark creatures~ but really anyone with non-human ancestry or who are deviants in any way. Less dark vs light but more order/control vs chaos/freedom.
I also think for our students in the 1-2 years after the 7th book, I imagine the differences between the muggleborn students who went on the run and the pureblood and halfblood students who stayed at Hogwarts would be stark. For someone like Dean, Hogwarts was a place he felt safe, and now he is returning there after this horrible experience. For Seamus, Hogwarts was the site of trauma, and now he is returning there after a different horrible experience. I imagine it would be hard for them to understand each other’s perspective - Dean as a muggleborn who was the target of the violence, Seamus as being constantly triggered by their environment.
(Though I very much headcanon them as getting together and being happy in the end and married and actively involved in wizarding life. They would just have a rough go of it at first!)
For the students, I could see a number of responses in the next few years:
Devoted to schoolwork to an unhealthy degree
Substance abuse
Reckless sex
Fighting/violence/acting out (especially at perceived collaborators)
Dropping out of school
Dropping out of the magical world entirely
Transferring to another school in a different country (I imagine A LOT of people just leave the UK for good during/after the war)
But you asked about people! (Parvati, Pansy & Susan Bones under the cut)
I imagine Padma, our darling Ravenclaw, would be one of those who deals with her trauma by studying obsessively/being perfect/focusing on outside achievement. Becomes a Healer.
This puts her a little at odds with Parvati who can’t comprehend why/how her sister is able to put the war behind her. I see Parvati as feeling really betrayed by the wizarding world - she saw so much of the fun and goodness in it (divination!), and she becomes really disillusioned - especially when she sees how Lavender gets treated after surviving a werewolf attack. Parvati and Lavender leave the UK and go to Paris and get married and live primarily in the muggle world and with other magical British expats.
Pansy, my bratty high femme love, has a rough time. I headcanon that she’s meh on the whole blood supremacy thing, but saw the turning of power and loudly and actively aligned herself with the Carrows in order to protect halfblooded Millicent. Their relationship is super unhealthy (holy internalized homophobia batman), but Pansy is ready to do whatever it takes to protect Millicent. They stay together after the war. Pansy really struggles with substance abuse. She’s unwilling to leave the UK, unwilling to escape in the muggle world, but struggles to find a place in the British wizarding world. She still has her money, and she’s a bit of a hot mess express all over England with Millicent trying to keep her alive, just as Pansy tried to keep her alive at Hogwarts.
Susan Bones, my favorite ultra-minor character, goes all in on community organizing and mental health care. She teams up with Hermione (who really deserves a nap but we all know she’s not taking one) to work to ensure there is no back to normal - just forward to better. She’s a pureblood with political connections and anti-Dark Magic bonafides, and she helps Hermione navigate the awful world of wizarding politics. I don’t have a headcanon about who she ends up with but I imagine someone a bit older.
