She's e+, not eb. She had a health hiccup where she quit growing for about a month when the first blast of heat tried to kill her, so she's small. But she's the duckwing I wanted all along. And she's growing again.
Her boy! He's laying here, but he's typey and mottled!
#chicken rant#well sort of the duckwing I wanted#but I can get rid of the welsummers I tried so hard to get XD#my ultimate goal on duckwing was silver duckwing#she's mottled columbian golden duckwing#which I suppose is also a goal so

I think I figured out the eggs! Top picture left to right: Clementine (Welsummer), Olivia (cuckoo Marans), Annabelle (Cream Legbar), Lydia (Prairie Bluebell) and the tan one in the bottom picture is Petunia’s (Swedish Flower).
Petunia doesn’t lay nearly as much. There were 2.5 dozen eggs in the fridge and only one of Petunia’s!

Boys.
Birch, tractor supply Easter egger abomination and 100% good boy
His son and usurper Leg, who we’re pretty sure came from a Wyandotte’s egg
Count Rugen the Six Fingered Man, a Dorking from a fancy heritage breeder
Danny Devito (Daniel of House Vito), a light Brahma from the same breeder
#we really only wanted 2 or max 3#but Danny minds his business so he gets to stick around#the Welsummer boys all became soup however#except for one lucky guy who got picked up for a backyard flock#chicken adventures

Build a Chicken Color Genotype Mahogany or Non-Mahogany
I'm building a chicken color genotype based on the genes Tumblr chooses, then I'll draw a male and a female specimen for you all to see.
I cover Mahogany in more detail here.
Mahogany makes a chicken have more red pigment.
Mahogany: Mh/Mh
You'd think having these on the farm would mean I'd have great pictures of these but sadly no. Welsummer photos from hobbyfarms.com.
Non-Mahogany: mh+/mh+

Oh mighty chicken parent, I seek thine wisdom... Are autosexing and sex links purely a hatchery thing, or have you seen breeders that produce them? I like the reassurance of the sex but want to avoid hatcheries.
Anyone can make their own sex links (even i have done it before! :D )and their are plenty of breeders for the autosexing chicken breeds my favorite being Legbars.
The easiest way to make a sex link is to either utilize Gold and Silver or the Barring gene which are sex linked genes. Hens can only have one copy of silver or gold (not both) and only one copy of the barring gene. There are other ways to make sexlinks! Like using skin color or sex linked chocolate. It's just barring and using gold and silver are the easiest since every chicken Is gold or silver and barred rocks are not uncommon.
It's important to remember that sex links do not breed true. This means you cant just breed your sex links together to get more of the same looking birds. A black sexlink is usually something like a Rhode Island or welsummer rooster over a barred rock hen. The cockerels are lighter and have a dot on their head while the pullets are black and will grow to have red leakage. Those birds wouldn't be able to produce more of themselves.
Autosexing breeds are pure bred breeds which can breed true. Welsummers for example are autosex and you can tell a pullet from a cockerel because the pullet will have very defined eyeliner-like markings and a very defined chipmunk pattern while the cockerels are more muddy and not as well marked.
Sometimes there is variability with autosexing though and some chicks may not look exactly as they should but you can still sex them with higher accuracy then just guessing.
This is what cream legbar chicks look like. The cockerels are paler, have a dot on the head, and don't have the same distinct pattern the pullets do
You can also use autosexing breeds in sex linked crosses as well. Like a legbar hen is still only going to give her barring gene to her sons if she is crossed to a nonbarred rooster.
Anyone can breed an autosexing breed or make their own sex links :)

For the chicken thing, here’s FR’s welsummer (now just named rooster) vs my hen vs the internet’s rooster. Yeah, it has the rooster coloring, and yeah it doesn’t have a rooster’s saddle feathers or spurs, but like. I’ll let you in on a secret. Chickens are super diverse in sexual dimorphism. There are hens who crow and grow saddle feathers and roosters who look like hens. Nature is funky. I’m honestly just glad staff picked endangered and unique breeds (Brahma and Cochin- though they are recovering, and Sebrights who the livestock conservancy org considers critical)
It’s not perfect, but like. What is man. And chicken owners should know that chickens are messy
Bonus of one of our broody hens :]

*It happily follows along, chortling the whole way*
*Crimson can be found in the living room, sort of just... standing in the center of it. He's looking around the room with his back turned to the hallway. His expression is focused with his brow furrowed, as if he's thinking through something*
[Azrael appeared on the top of the couch in a mass of dark feathers. They had certainly been spooked by something; their entrance not nearly as elegant as it usually was.]
[As if to prove as much, as soon as they had some actual footing on top of the couch, they proceeded to fall off as they lost their balance. They produced a particularly avian sound of shock as they did so]
- [Another Set of Eyes]
*The sound of the angel's fall definitely catches Crimson's attention. He doesn't make it past the hallway's entrance before he whips around to face the intruder, feathers puffed up and trident already in hand*
{What do you want!?}
*The words come out of its mouth before it actually processes anything. When it recognizes Azrael, its feathers settle a little, although it still remains pretty tense*
#{partisan divinity}#// ouu just saying this now bcus i. realize i never said anything before //#// i went scouring the internet for brown chickens the other day and decided that this one would be a welsummer :] //#// a welsummer specifically bcus i used to have a chicken who was a brown leghorn and they look very very similar //#// except brown leghorns are emo /silly //

do you know what breed your chicken twig is? she looks EXACTLY like my chicken olivia!! (who i only know as an olive egger)
Twig is a Welsummer! Im not super familiar with which breeds make up an Olive Egger, so I don't know if welsummers are mixed in there. I can tell you that Twig lays dark, speckly brown eggs!

Ok time to scratch/vent crow brain now;
Things the Gato wants to has as a sorta-collection. It literally just lists Feathers, an egg and Anime Figures, cause brain said it’d have more than that for me to write on this list and it lied due to forgetfulness
First one- Feathers. Older me understands that legally best not to collect feathers that aren’t either hunting-game birds or domesticated birds, so makes this list scuffed as I only know a few birds that match that.
Male pheasant tail feathers. Cause lovely stripes.
Guniea Fowl Feathers, cause funky spots.
Peacock feather is actually one I’m not dying for weirdly enough, but wouldn’t mind as the top-off if I had other feathers, maybe I’d be more interested if it was from a funky colour morph peacock or something.
cutting in readmore cause this list is gonna be various the deeper we go
Fucking Sebright chicken feathers, either silver or gold morph tbh, and is the breed that always reminds me that there is prolly an untapped enjoyment for domestic birb feathers.
Plymouth Barred Rock feathers. STRIPES AGAIN!!! zebra chimkin!!!
Welsummer feathers. Neck or body cause wtf man, how they patterned like that. Is this a bird or a mosaic?!
Hamburg feathers. This is assuming that the feathers look like what I think they look like; white with black at the ends.
WE ARE SURPRISINGLY DONE WITH THE FEATHERS, not cause I wouldn’t mind others but cause I can’t think of any (the last two chickens were googled ones with me trying to find neat patterned breeds if it wasn’t obvious)
DRAINED EMU EGG. CAUSE GREEN AND FANCY AND THERES WEIRDOS IN THE ODD PARTS OF THIS PROVINCE THAT GOT EMUS
Anime figures since that’s the next one that crossed my mind, being most are expensive as fuck, I don’t see getting any unless I get super lucky. Not really into the ecchi/lewd types but the pretty/cute? absolutely
Gura Nendroid
Marine Nendroid (surprising entry since I don’t watch her but her pirate motif and colour designs hit the right spot)
Ironmouse Nendroid
Not gonna show pictures but like, most Miku Nendroids, Sakura, catgirl, any of the cute themed Mikus are a yes plz
Okayu figurine, cause catgirl bias
Chocolate/Vanilla nekopara figurines. Cause catgirl bias, I have not played the games (seeing streams of the games makes me want to play said games even less lmao). Azuki wouldn’t be bad either.
Googling pics made me realize there are a lot of cute catgirl figurines from various franchises. Many of those others would be cute too.

This is Clementine. She’s a partridge Welsummer (the same as Penelope). I’m not sure how old she is but I’d guess 12 weeks or so. She’s been pecking on the little ones a bit and is content to just do her own thing. Hopefully she’ll become the leader and Annabelle and Petunia will follow her instead of hanging out in the coop all day.
