26th May 1647, during an influenza epidemic in Windsor Connecticut, in which the town has suffered a high rate of infant mortality, resident Alse (or Alice) Young is accused of witchcraft and executed by hanging in Hartford; becoming the first person to be executed as a witch in the thirteen American colonies. Thirty years later her daughter Alice Young Beamon, is also accused of witchcraft in Springfield Massachusetts. On the following day (27th May) in 1692 in Salem, the Court of Oyer and Terminer is established to hear accusations of witchcraft, which had begun the previous February.
