Best of 2018 Music #16: Weezer “Africa”

The best cover of the year belongs to a long gestating campaign to see popular band Weezer cover a classic song from 1985.

  Twitter User Mary Kylm who is an avid fan of the group began to create an account solely for the purpose of getting her favorite group to cover Africa by the band Toto.

 While nearly a carbon copy of the original this does have its value, and this is their best song in a very long time.

 The high placement on her comes thanks to a music video where Weird Al Yankovic acted as the band, while he is virtually unrecognizable as band lead Rivers Cuomo. Accordion solo in all, this was worth seeing the fans persistence pay off.

  Also Pitbull making it his own thanks to Aquaman.

  Sum 22: Rivers Cuomo blessed the rains down in Africa thanks to the fans who were clamoring for this cover. Best cover this year.

Une fan ado a passé des mois à demander à Weezer de reprendre le fameux hit de 1982, « Africa » de Toto… et son voeu a été exhaussé ! 

Weezer a suscité la surprise, hier, en dévoilant la tant attendue reprise du hit « Africa » de Toto datant de 1982. Tout est venu de la demande d’une grande fan du groupe. N’ayant pas eu de réponse, celle-ci en est même venue à créer un compte Twitter attitré qui nous avait enthousiasmé : @weezerafrica.

Selon Noisey, Mary, une jeune fille de 14 ans, est la tête pensante de cette manigance sur les réseaux sociaux. Une héroïne ! La semaine dernière, Weezer a joué au bluff en proposant une reprise de Toto… mais pas du morceau convoité, puisqu’il s’agissait du titre « Rosanna ». Des petits blagueurs ? C’était sans compter la fameuse récompense. Comme @weezerafrica l’a noté hier, « On dirait que @Weezer a finalement béni les pluies… » quand le groupe a fait le buzz en dévoilant sa version de « Africa ».

Finalement, ça rend comment ? Autant dire que cette cover est une réussite totale. Très bien produite – pas étonnant chez les Weezer – la chanson respecte l’essence du groupe de Rivers Cuomo : un rock smooth et américain. C’est en écoute ci-dessous :

Weezer a récemment fait allusion à une probable sortie, cette année, de leur nouvel album éponyme : le « Black Album ». Une sorte de suite de leur précédent éponyme « White Album » datant de 2016. L’an dernier, le groupe nous avait un peu déçu avec le fast-food « Pacific Daydream », qui malgré quelques bons moments (« Happy Hour », « Mexican Fender », « Beach Boys »), peinait à nous retenir tout du long. Entre les nombreux projets avec Weezer, le frontman et chanteur a sorti en mars dernier un single solo inattendu, « Medicine for Melancholy ».

     Have you felt like the world’s been going to the dogs recently? That’s the polite way of putting it but honestly, everything feels like trash right now. From world politics to the environmental state of the planet, it seems that nothing is going right and at the moment it seems like my generation is going to have to be the cleaning crew. One girl has taken the job of bettering society to heart by creating a successful, months-long campaign with one goal: to have Weezer cover “Africa” by Toto.

     Here’s some facts. Toto is a band of all men who have gone without scandal (so far) and that’s surprising right now because I’m used to most men being awful. “Africa” is a perfect song: everyone knows at least the chorus, the synths are beautiful and the words are wholesome. Weezer is a beloved rock band. It just makes sense, but only 14-year-old Mary from Cleveland had the vision to put this idea into the world.

     According to the Twitter account she created just for the sake of this cover, Mary has been trying since December 6th, 2017 to make this happen. For six months she has been shouting into the void to make a popular rock band notice her. They had to put aside time to learn the song, practice the song then spend money recording the song and getting the rights to release it to all major streaming services. Many would say, “how could a millennial have the gall and ego to think this would ever work?” It did work! It’s been online since yesterday morning.

     At the time of writing, Mary’s account @weezerafrica has over 3000 followers. Major publications like Pitchfork and The Goddamn New Yorker wrote about her success after the song broke but only Noisey, a subsidiary of Vice, interviewed Mary and gave her goal a platform when they published the article chronicling her story in December of 2017. Mary comes across as a very nice, relatable teen but again - she is so much more than us, we merely live in her world.

     Weezer had their fun with this campaign too. Just days ago on May 24th they dropped a different Toto cover; “Rosanna,” which actually appears on the same album as “Africa.” Frontman Rivers Cuomo has always had a good sense of humour. The cover by the way is perfect. It’s just what you’d want. The verses have that signature synth recreated perfectly from the original, the chorus bangs extra-hard with pop-punk power chords and the harmonies - oh, the harmonies are beautiful.

     After releasing a successful 11th album this year, Weezer doesn’t have to prove anything. With the release of this cover, they prove how much they love their fans. Perhaps the best part of this story is the homage they pay to Mary for getting this whole thing into conception. The album artwork they used for the single is a leafy background, centered by a screenshot of a tweet; one of many tweets where she asks the band to give in and just give this to us. In a world where nearly everything sucks, Toto, Weezer and most importantly Mary have given us a beacon of hope.
