Ship (aka Full-rigged): All three masts square-rigged.

Barque: First two masts square-rigged, the mizzen fore-and-aft rigged

Barquentine (Schooner barque): Fore mast square-rigged, main and mizzen fore-and-aft.

Topsail schooner: All masts fore-and-aft rigged, but with topsails on the foremast

Schooner: All masts fore-and-aft rigged

I got to sail on the Happy Buccaneer, which was the flagship (unofficial) and oldest ship of the company. 40 years old, and still an amazing heavy lift ship.

Then on another ship I sailed the North-West passage, spend a month in the Arctic.

To top it off, I passed my chief engineer's exams successfully.

Bit insane that that was all this year if I list it like that.

It wasn't all sailing, I also had some really nice camping trips.

I know you live in Maryland. I'm sorry to hear about the FSK bridge. I heard that the ship lost power but don't they have back up steering?

Thank you. It is disaster for a lot of Maryland. In answer to your question, I don't know. I suspect that even if there is a backup there wouldn't have been time for the ship to turn.

I have two friends who have served in their countries much respected Merchant Navies. If they see this and know of the Key Bridge incident they may be able to tell you more of the technical issues of turning a ship without power. @aber-flyingtiger, @weergang

Having watched the entirety of the Lord of the Rings trilogy in two days, I've started on Master and Commander, which has been as excellent as I remembered it to be.
