Empire State Challenge 2024, World of Outlaws
Weedsport Speedway
I attended my first in-person World of Outlaws event last night! I'd seen the All-Stars at Outlaw Speedway in 2022 and High Limit at Kokomo Speedway in 2023, and felt remiss in not yet having seen the Outlaws race live. New York seems like it has a fairly robust sprint culture, and people came out from Ontario and Quebec, too, to the largest crowd the speedway has ever seen.
As a track, I learned that Weedsport is an interesting one--slow, slick, and technical, such that a 360 can be competitive with 410s, even!
Sheldon Haudenschild got Quick Time; Carson Macedo was on pole; and David Gravel (current points leader and longtime defending winner at Weedsport) took the lead at Lap 14 and held it to the end.
ngl the vibes were kind of off, though maybe that was me (it was a Sunday night!! Sunday, as in that which precedes a Monday! Who races on Sunday night! also probably the only person in the entire speedway who brought a book to read during red flags), but I'm happy for the experience. Of the three events, High Limit was my favorite; I feel like when it comes to dirt racing, Indiana just goes with dirt racing. In the future I'd love to go to a Pennsylvania sprint race, though, and see the PA Posse in action. And of course there's always Eldora!
