Entourage Cannabis Play a Sign of Things to Come

WeedMD Acquires CannTx, Launches New Name Entourage: Cannabis for Medicinal and Recreation – LPC

Long-time licensed producer (LP) WeedMD is “evolving” the company says as the Canadian cannabis market changes and matures. It has purchased CannTX and has already rebranded as Entourage Entourage Health Corp. Under Entourage, cannabis will cover both medical cannabis and recreational. “It really is that transformation and evolution of WeedMD,” said Entourage’s interim CEO, George Scorsis. “The business has become a lot more sophisticated and it has evolved to a point that we’re not just delivering weed. We are delivering medicines to people, (and) we are delivering consumer-packaged goods to consumers.” CannTX covers those “consumer-packaged goods”. The purchase will give WeedMD (now Entourage) access to the craft cannabis market. The two companies previously partnered together on a product collaboration shortly before announcing the takeover in May. “It’s about us carving out our position in the industry,” Scorsis said. “What we ultimately want to do is be able to drive and deliver good quality products that generate high margins for us.” The new name refers to the “entourage effect” which happens when many cannabinoids work together. “And that is symbolic of our organization as well,” Scorsis said. “Our organization is based on the people, and the sum of all the people provide us with the entourage effect.”

The Future of Canadian Cannabis Consolidation Will Not Be the Past – LPC

The Entourage cannabis play is a sign of things to come. Cannabis consolidation is nothing new, but it is constantly evolving. The Hexo/Zenabis deal was about positioning for the US market. The Tilray/Aphria deal was about positioning for global domination. But unrest in the cannabis industry began long before that, with consolidations threatening at least as early as February 2019. One analyst predicted consolidation in the cannabis industry, stating that the Canadians “don’t need 100 companies”. But with Entourage, cannabis production is more about shifting and diversifying. Although Entourage will certainly grow in size with the CannTX acquisition, it seems to be more about tapping into new markets – i.e. the craft cannabis market. (Interestingly enough, CannTX also started life as an LP under MMPR.) The $17.5 million all-stock deal may also challenge what “craft cannabis” means. Once the CannTX acquisition is complete (expected next month), Entourage will have nearly 300 workers at its WeedMD greenhouse in Strathroy, Ont., its WeedMD extraction and packaging plant in Aylmer, Ont., and its CannTX indoor grow-op in Guelph, Ont. That may seem big, but the reality is that there isn’t a definition for craft cannabis – at least in the legal sense. Micro-cultivation does: it’s defined as any cultivation area with under 200 square metres of growing area. According to MJBizDaily, “craft cannabis” is loosely defined as producing less than 10,000 kg of cannabis per year that is hand-dried, hand-trimmed, and hand-packaged. And, CannTX only takes up a small portion of that. According to its LinkedIn page, CannTX has a minimum of 43 employees and a max of 50, which still makes it smaller scale. So, is it a matter of larger companies taking over smaller craft cannabis companies? Entourage cannabis options seem to be much larger now with the takeover/merger. And, it will be interesting to see how separate the two parts of the new company remain. If they play their cards right, it could be an interesting mix of small-batch cannabis with larger distribution reach. Some of the World’s Biggest Cannabis Companies Asking for Help to Save the Industry – LPC

The Canadian government has set up a stimulus fund of $10 billion through Export Development Canada and the Business Development Bank of Canada. This is to help companies survive the economic disaster the COVID-19 outbreak brought on. However, cannabis companies have been left out. Now, 71 cannabis companies across Canada are asking the government for some cannabis aid for its workers. Aurora’s Rick Savone, senior vice-president of global government relations, said the licensed producer system is in jeopardy. “If we don’t take measures now to protect the industry... we put at risk all of the progress that we made from a policy perspective,” Savone said. “We serve a victory to the black market.” Aurora along with other companies including Canopy Rivers Inc. (a subsidiary of Canopy Growth that holds several companies in its portfolio including PharmHouse), WeedMD, Organigram and Fire and Flower Inc., wrote Ministers Bill Morneau (Finance) and Navdeep Bains (Industry) asking for access to cannabis aid in the form of wage subsidies. Cannabis aid couldn’t come at a better time. The cannabis industry is already facing hardships. Cannabis sales declines last year coupled with Ontario’s slow retail growth impacted many companies including the big ones. In February Aurora, shed 500 jobs and wrote down up to $775 million. Things were looking up when Ontario finally opened for business. Then, COVID-19 hit.

Cannabis Aid Could Preserve the System – LPC

Companies throughout the supply chain could use cannabis aid, including retailers. Calgary-based YSS Corp., also a subsidiary of Canopy Rivers, operates 17 cannabis stores in Alberta and Saskatchewan. YSS chief executive Theo Zunich said they had to close one store and dramatically cut hours in its others. Many workers are opting to stay at home – a choice the company offered to employees. “We’re just constantly balancing this decision of whether we should put everybody on employment insurance,” Zunich said. Although he supports cannabis aid in theory, YSS wouldn’t qualify, he said. And, it probably wouldn’t help. “We have about 162 employees and you have to have under 100,” he said. “Even then the wage subsidy is 10 per cent of a maximum of $25,000 over three months.” It’s clear that COVID-19 is going to wreak havoc for the next several weeks or months. It’s already decimating many different industries. However, most of those same industries will have government assistance of some kind. Should cannabis aid be treated any differently? As Aurora’s Savone said: it took a lot to build the Canadian cannabis industry. We should do everything we can including cannabis aid to ensure it survives this too.
